Marina Port Vell is a world-class marina for superyachts perfectly located in the heart of Barcelona. Originally built during the 1992 Olympic Games, it has now assumed a strategic role for the city and provides a major boost to the Catalan coast as one of the first marinas in Spain to specialize in the superyacht sector.

A popular superyacht homeport and the perfect summer destination, set between the cruising grounds of the Western Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Marina Port Vell has in recent years witnessed a major shift in the traditional cruising patterns. Marina Port Vell is the premium Superyacht facility offering over 150 berths and one of the world’s longest quays (440m), which makes it an ideal destination for the mooring of superyachts up to 190m.

Marina Port Vell and Barcelona’s popularity has enabled the showcasing of prolific worldwide industry events at the marina, including the MYBA Charter Show, The Superyacht Show from LYBRA and the Salón Náutico Internacional de Barcelona. It is also the venue of choice for many brands synonymous with quality and excellence such as Maserati, Lamborghini and Aston Martin as well as high-end retailers including Montblanc and Jo Malone.

The Marina is a well-established nautical hub bringing together multiple industry-related companies to offer guests the best services in award winning buildings such as The Gallery, designed by architecture practice, SCOB Architects. A 24-hour serviced space which takes design and lifestyle inspiration from the surrounding superyachts within the marina and the sea.

Marina Port Vell continues to grow in popularity during the summer as the Mediterranean’s leading Superyacht Marina and is well established as a favourite winter home port destination. Run by a team of highly qualified professionals to provide the service levels required for effective running and management for these renowned 70m plus superyachts. In September 2021 a new €20 million investment plan was agreed upon, involving the remodelling of the marina to enhance its capacity and strengthen its specialised ad hoc services for 30m plus vessels, creating 23 new berths for vessels with a length of up to 70m.

yacht marina barcelona

Thanks to this new configuration, the marina will boast 55 berths for superyachts, a figure that will increase up to 65 in periods of high occupancy to accommodate the sought after winter berthing demands and the growing popularity of visiting superyachts in high season summer. The plan includes the remodelling of different spaces within the marina, such as; reconfiguring the marina basin, a landscaping project and installation of a new bunkering system. Additionally, a sustainability Master Plan has been introduced to ensure that the marina continues to be a sustainable, safe and innovative infrastructure providing quality services.

Barcelona has established itself as the most important city in the Western Mediterranean. An Iconic and vibrant cosmopolitan city, known for its year-round good weather, culture and gastronomy attracting talent, creativity, and innovation with an offering of an array of world leading activities and attractions within the city and on Marina Port Vells doorstep.

Renowned for its fantastic gastronomic options, Barcelona boasts 30 plus Michelin Star restaurants, and a luxurious first-rate shopping district housing iconic buildings such as  La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. Barcelona also has the unique advantage of being home to the only Superyacht Marina in the Mediterranean located within a city, only a 5-minute walk into the town centre and nearby beaches. A short drive to the stunning Costa Brava or a 2-hour drive to Europe’s prime ski resorts in the Pyrenees mountains makes Barcelona and Marina Port Vell the perfect destination. The city, close to the base of the Pyrenees, is large enough that it has its own underground railway network, by which you can hide from the fearsome summer heat as you explore the multitude of attractions at the surface.

Some highlights worth a visit:

  • Las Ramblas, a long pedestrianised street that is best explored in the evening while nibbling on tapas and sipping sangria. What you will see and find there will remain with you for times to come!
  • The Gaudi Monument, (Sagrada Familia) a cathedral that is so complex, construction is set to be completed in 2026, over 140 years since the first stone was laid!
  • The Platja (beach) from where you can watch the world go by as you sunbathe and drink in the atmosphere of this stunning city - one of many beautiful beaches you will find on a Barcelona yacht charter.
  • Parc Güell, a monumental garden where the architect Gaudi's mind went wild and is said to have 'perfected his style' - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • And of course for those on a Barcelona yacht charter especially, the Olympic Port. This was rebuilt ahead of the 1994 Olympics and is the largest of the seven marinas in the city where you may begin your sailing holiday.

This list is far from exhaustive! As you roam the city you will get the buzz for one that never really sleeps and there's always something going on. It is one of the most popular city destinations in Spain and you will soon see why. There's something for everyone, and everyone will soon be immersed in the parts you enjoy and may want to spend just a little more time there!

Explore Barcelona By Renting A Yacht

Barcelona is the gateway to the Costa Brava, and you can also island-hop the Balearic Islands from here.

The Mediterranean Sea coast of the 'Costa Brava' literally translates to 'Wild Coast', in a large part due to the sometimes fearsome north wind, the Tramontana that can get very feisty even in the summer. The further east you head the closer to the Pyrenees you are, and this is where the cold air falls from that creates the wind. It means you need to be ready to put a double reef in, though there is accurate forecasting that will inform you whether you may need to do so.

Heading east on your chartered yacht on a tour of the Costa Brava you can get to Cadaques and the spectacular Cap de Creus. Masters of modern art Salvador Dali and Picasso used to hang out in Cadaques for its scenery and clarity of light - the light caused by the Tramontana blasting all the rubbish out of the air! On such a trip, do pay a visit to Girona - the mediaeval capital of Catalonia and still a beautiful city with its old town and university today.

Barcelona is also a gateway to the Balearic Islands. Over a couple of days sailing you can head down the coast and then out to the islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. These three islands are part of the same island chain but are very different to one another. Ibiza is for hippies, party people and families. Majorca's capital Palma is almost as good as Barcelona. Menorca is quieter than the other two islands but has plenty of unspoilt beauty none the less.

As ever, whether on a luxury yacht charter or bareboat charter the choice is down to you. Perhaps you could go on a couple of sailing holidays and explore firstly the east and then the south-west?

How To Get To Barcelona

There are two airports you will see advertised as Barcelona. Barcelona Airport itself is an hour's train ride from the city centre (thanks to security you must now change trains midway through the journey) but Girona-Barcelona also advertises as Barcelona - this is a two hour trip by bus from Barcelona. The flights and travel often work out significantly cheaper via Girona thanks to the popularity of Barcelona Airport itself.

Barcelona Airport

This is an international airport with airlines all over the world flying into it. It has its own train station so it makes sense to take a train to Barcelona Sants train station and then take a bus or taxi onto the marina.

Girona-Barcelona Airport

Girona-Barcelona Airport has airlines from across Europe serving it, and gets busy in the summer with charter flights.

Girona is a significant distance from Barcelona, and its name is a slick piece of advertising. Even with an added few hours to your overland journey from Girona to Barcelona however you will often find that the cost of travel is significantly cheaper to the main city.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Barcelona

Sailing from Barcelona on your boat rental you have two main choices of popular destinations - exploring the Costa Brava or the Balearic Islands by sailing boat or motorboat. Here we look at a week-long trip up to Cadaques and then a two week trip to the Balearic Islands.

7 Days - Cadaques and Cap de Creus: Cadaques is a charming harbour with water and air so clear you could forget this is the 21st Century. The art town is the halfway point of a trip where you can explore Sitges, Girona and the Bay of Roses as you go. The scenery of the Pyrenees falling into the sea here will astound you - but do be aware of the katabatibc winds that can fall from above like bombs! Definitely a route for the more experienced sailor on a bareboat charter...

14 Days - tour of the Balearic Islands: Over 14 days heading west from Barcelona this is an opportunity to visit the important city of Valencia further down the coast before heading offshore and on to the Balearic Islands. If you spend 2-3 days per Balearic island you will have time to take in the various sights and sounds of Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca in their riot of different vibes. The winds are gentler on this route as for the best part of the trip you are out of the way of the Tramontana and can enjoy some very good sailing conditions with little in the way of the feisty north wind bothering you.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Barcelona

The sailing season in Barcelona is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in the region - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.

The Tramontana tends to build from September and eases away in May, though this can blow fiercely for several days at a time even in midsummer.

The NE breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates the Costa Brava in summer, cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some boisterous sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climates this makes for fantastic sailing!

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Barcelona?

There are seven main marinas in Barcelona, with the two largest being Port Olimpic and Marina de Badalona. The five smaller are Marina Vela Barcelona, Port Forum, Reil Club Nautico de Barcelona, OneOcean Port Veil, and Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona

When are the best times to hire a boat in Barcelona?

The high season is in July and August. Locals flee the heat of the city and tourists replace them. Things get expensive and restaurants competitive. The city and sailing destinations nearby tend to relax a bit, become more friendly and cheaper outside of the peak season. If you can take a F7 gale from time to time (or certainly run for port safely) then it may make sense to go in May or September when the air is warm and the ports less busy.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Barcelona?

You will typically pay 50% upfront on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

Frequently asked questions

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

yacht marina barcelona

Join some of the world’s best superyachts in Barcelona this winter

With summer now in full swing and superyachts enjoying a busy season, figuring out where to berth this winter is next on the agenda. For those owners and captains whose yachts are not heading to the Caribbean or in need of a berth after the summer season, Barcelona’s Marina Port Vell can provide the perfect winter port.

Reaching this cosmopolitan city is easy by plane, and even easier by superyacht, as Marina Port Vell lies in the heart of Barcelona. Built during the 1992 Olympic Games, Marina Port Vell is one of Barcelona’s main attractions, as it is the only superyacht marina in the Mediterranean located within a city and is often populated by some of the world’s most famous superyachts.

These yachts and more have experienced how Marina Port Vell has established itself as one of the best and most popular superyacht destinations. And this winter, the marina will continue to offer a first-class service to all berthed yachts, their guests and crews, in the following ways:

Plenty of space

In September 2021, Marina Port Vell presented a €20 million investment plan to remodel the marina to increase capacity for superyachts and strengthen its services. The results will see an additional 23 berths for vessels up to 70 metres. For superyachts measuring up to 190 metres, the total berths available in winter will be 65.

The plan also focuses on sustainability and will grant the marina extra green spaces and a new bunkering system accessible at each berth to reduce pollution. Marina Port Vell’s green goals include the ESG strategy that ensures it is an environmentally-responsible company.

Brand-new buildings

Inside the marina, guests have access to six idyllic spaces: The Sea Garden, the Blue Wave, the Crew Lounge, the docks, as well as the award-winning flagship building, The Gallery. Having been recently remodelled with elegant and sculptural furniture thanks to one of the most recognised interior design studios in Barcelona, The Gallery is the ultimate meeting point. The exclusive glass building is home to a gym and several events and meeting spaces, including a high-tech VIP room, and the Crew Lounge. With space for up to 100 crew members, the Crew Lounge is popular for its terrace overlooking the city and activities such as yoga classes, social events, training sessions and captain’s seminars. Built on the water, guests may notice how the architectural design of The Gallery has been inspired by the surrounding superyachts.

City concierge

Barcelona is one of the most vibrant cities in the Western Mediterranean. In the city, the beaches, Sagrada Familia, Michelin Star restaurants, art galleries, shopping district and Gaudi houses are just some of the landmarks guests of Marina Port Vell can spend their time visiting. Or, if the abundant Spanish culture on the marina’s doorstep isn’t enough, there are ski resorts, mountain ranges and wine country nearby. To help guests on their way, there are car parking facilities and a concierge who can help organise everything from storage to diving trips.

Security is paramount to Marina Port Vell, and after having been certified as ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) compliant, the Marina operates with 24-hour gated security, patrolling guards, resident and visitor passes, 50+ CCTV cameras and infrared detection. The marina’s 24-hour mooring assistance team also go above and beyond to make sure superyachts have everything they need, particularly with any maintenance needs, as some of the industry’s key players are closely connected to the marina.

To find out more about Marina Port Vell and its competitive berthing prices for both rental and ownership this winter, contact the marina team directly here.

One of them is about the so-called vampire of Barcelona in the beginning of the 20th century. However, this is not a fairytale, it is the story of a gruesome woman named Enriqueta Martí, who abducted children in broad daylight and offered them to the wealthy people of Barcelona as prostitutes. She was finally arrested in 1912. Very scary times!

Sailing conditions in Barcelona

Barcelona is a very popular sailing destination in the Mediterranean - for good reason! The colourful city is known for its fun nightlife, long sandy beaches and various spots that are perfect for anchoring or mooring.

Sailing season in Barcelona is between May and October, however, it is important to keep in mind that the summer months June, July and August are particularly popular with tourists. Hot temperatures, as well as crowded streets and beaches are typical during this time. Water temperatures can reach 28 degrees during the hottest months. If you want to avoid the masses, but still want to enjoy the warm weather, it is best to visit the city in September or October. If you still want to come here during the busy summer months, renting a boat is a great option to do your own thing and sail to beaches that you can only reach by boat.

Barcelona is the perfect sailing destination for novice and amateur sailors. Southeastern winds and northern winds dominate this part of Spain and ensure that you can even enjoy a sailing adventure in the summer. Experienced sailors and those that lust for adventures might want to head North of Barcelona to chase stronger winds - especially in the winter months.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Barcelona?

The price to rent a boat in Barcelona highly depends on the season, the type and size of the boat, as well as the amount of passengers and the age of the boat. Spain is definitely not the most expensive destination in the Mediterranean, meaning that you can rent a boat for very little money.

On average it costs just 68 EUR per person per day to charter a sailboat in Spain . Rent a RIB in Spain at an average price of 54 EUR per person per day. Renting a speedboat in Spain will cost you 85 EUR per person per day on average. It will cost you a little more to rent a catamaran or motorboat in Spain . Renting a catamaran will cost you 111 EUR on average per person per day. Rent a motorboat in Spain at an average price of 179 EUR per person per day.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Barcelona?

It all depends on your dream sailing vacation in Barcelona. If you just want to sunbathe all day long and party with your friends at night, you would charter a different type of boat than the one you would rent if you want to practice your sailing skills and feel the wind on your skin.

Rent a catamaran in Barcelona

Pros of renting a catamaran in Barcelona

Renting a catamaran in Barcelona means that you get to see the city and the surrounding areas from a whole new perspective. One of the advantages of renting a catamaran is the fact that they have a shallow draft. This makes them perfect for exploring beaches, bays and getting to historical sights like Mirador del Semáforo .

Another advantage of chartering a catamaran in Barcelona is the fact that they are equipped with a motor and a sail. This gives you a huge advantage over other types of boats. You can sail with the wind as long as it’s blowing and revert to the engine should the wind suddenly stop blowing. This is fantastic, because you won’t get stuck in the middle of the sea should mother nature suddenly decide to stop blessing you with appropriate winds.

Another great thing about catamarans is their size. They are generally quite spacious, allowing you to feel less claustrophobic than on other types of boats. You will definitely get a good night’s sleep here and will feel like you are in a hotel room and not in a cabin on a boat in the Mediterranean.

As catamarans are standing on two hulls, they are more stable than other types of boats. Should the wind suddenly pick up, you won’t feel it as much as you would with other boats. You might hear the water hitting the boat harder, but it is still much more comfortable.

One of the most popular catamarans to rent in Barcelona is Catamaran Bali 4.1 . The boat offers space for up to 12 people and comes with a professional captain who is going to navigate you safely through the Mediterranean waters.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Barcelona

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran in Barcelona is the fact that they are quite big. This can make mooring at the marinas a little complicated at times - if you are able to secure a spot. It might also make mooring at a marina more expensive as they require more space than other types of boats.

Charter a catamaran in Barcelona

Rent a sailboat in Barcelona

Pros of renting a sailboat in Barcelona

Renting a sailboat in Barcelona means that you get to enjoy the full sailing experience while vacationing on the Spanish coast. As the wind is your fuel, you don’t have to worry about any additional extortionate costs. Set sail and discover what the Mediterranean sea and the stunning Spanish coastline have to offer. Barcelona doesn’t get strong winds like other parts of the Mediterranean, making it the perfect spot for novice sailors.

One of the most popular sailboat rentals in Barcelona is Sailboat Hanse 400 which is available to rent in Port Olímpic de Barcelona . It offers space for up to 7 people and can be rented with or without a captain. A refrigerator and a stove on board ensure that you can prepare your own food while sailing and don’t need to worry about stopping in between in order to stock up on food.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Barcelona

If you want to charter a sailboat in Barcelona , you need to keep in mind that you are fully dependent on the wind. You might get stuck in the middle of the sea should the wind suddenly stop blowing. This might leave some frustrations if you can’t reach your destination as quickly as you might have hoped. The summer months in particular can lack stronger winds. Some sailboats are equipped with a little engine, but they are not made for long distances.

Rent a motorboat in Barcelona

Pros of renting a motorboat in Barcelona

Renting a motorboat in Barcelona comes with many advantages. It is generally faster than other types of boats, making it the perfect boat if you want to explore the surrounding area and check off the many beautiful sights you can visit. Especially if you want to sail further South, you need a boat that can handle the distance and offers the comforts you need when doing so.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Barcelona

Unlike catamarans, motorboats are only equipped with an engine. This means that you always need to ensure that your tank is full and ready for the journey. You can’t use the wind as fuel. With the ever-increasing fuel prices you should also keep in mind that you can expect a hefty bill at the end of your trip in addition to the bareboat charter price.

Charter a luxury yacht in Barcelona

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Barcelona?

In Spain you don’t need a boat licence to rent a boat if it is shorter than 5 metres or shorter than 6 metres in the case of sailboats. The boat should also not be able to operate at more than 15hp. This might sound like a dream come true, but keep in mind that you can only operate these kinds of boats during the day when there is light. It is not allowed to operate any boats without a licence in Spain at night.

If you are in possession of the Licencia de Navegación , you can operate boats that are not longer than 6 metres, but you can only sail up to two miles away from the coast.

The Port of Mataró

Mataro marina BARCELONA is located on the west pier of the port of Mataró, a leisure harbour with clean, tranquil waters boasting fantastic facilities: hotels, restaurants, shops and nautical services.

Mataró  is the capital of the Maresme area, also known as the Catalan California. Located merely 30 kilometers north of Barcelona, Mataró is a city which boasts an important cultural patrimony which gives it its own distinct character. The privileged geographical location –the sea on one side, and a coastal mountain range on the other– ensures that Mataró’s climatic conditions are ideal for enjoying the city.

Mataró’s origins date back to the Roman era. This precious legacy can be found in the Torre Llauder Roman village from the first century AC, and the latest discoveries in the centre of the ancient village. Strolling through the streets of the city centre its history can be felt everywhere. This ancient Roman hamlet has Baroque architecture, colonial architecture, as well as outstanding examples of Modernist architecture by one of its most important representatives, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who was of course from Mataró.

In Mataró you will encounter first class commercial and gastronomic opportunities, fantastic beaches and excellent nautical facilities.

Yacht rental in Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of the province of Catalonia. It is located in a uniquely picturesque area south of the Pyrenees, on the border with France, next to the Mediterranean coast. Tourists from all over the world come here to spend at least a few days on an unforgettable trip. Renting a boat in Barcelona is one of the most effective ways to discover the Costa del Maresme or Costa Brava in all its splendor, get great pleasure and enjoy your holiday in this unusual and original place.

The best time to travel starts in the first days of May and ends in the last days of October. This is the most favorable season when the sun shines around the clock in Barcelona and there is almost no rain. The only thing that can overshadow the rental of a boat in Barcelona during the high season is the huge crowds of tourists. They are everywhere — on the streets of the city, on the beaches, in restaurants, in amusement parks…

However, there is a proven way to relax in privacy, and avoid crowds — hiring a boat. It will allow you to visit incredibly beautiful deserted bays and beaches, which can only be reached by water. This is only possible if you book the boat in advance. If you take care of this in advance, even before the start of the high season, you can choose a boat at a lower price from a large range of unoccupied options for the desired date and time.

Boat rental services in Barcelona by the hour will be provided by our company, and our experienced captains with their friendly team will do their best to make your vacation unforgettable. They are well-versed in the local area, so they will select the best routes, where nature is of indescribable beauty. Fuel is included in the cost of the cruise.

Do you want to book a boat for rent near you — from the place where you stayed in a hotel or rented temporary accommodation? We will select for you the best option from the many different yachts that are waiting for their passengers (from 2 to 250 people) in popular ports and marinas throughout Barcelona:

  • Port Olympic
  • Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona
  • Marina Port Vell
  • Real Club Nautico de Barcelona
  • Marina Vela Barcelona

Boat rental in Barcelona is paid by the hour. The most popular trip duration is 2-3 hours, but if you wish, you can hire a boat for the whole day and spend it on board from the first minutes of sunrise to sunset.

What events are suitable for renting a boat?

Traditionally, a boat for rent in Barcelona is rented out for any private, corporate, and business events. These services are in demand not only among tourists but also among the local population:

  • romantic walks along the sea coast with a photo session
  • family celebrations
  • friendly parties
  • stag parties
  • bachelorette parties
  • celebrating birthdays and anniversaries
  • original dates, sunrises-sunsets
  • wedding banquets
  • incendiary parties on board
  • intimate candlelit dinners
  • business meetings and corporate parties
  • team building and training
  • wedding photo shoots
  • yachting master classes
  • holding corporate regattas

Boat rental

If you hire a boat for 2 hours, you will have time to enjoy the views of the streets of Barcelona and its monuments, sailing through the oldest quarter, Barceloneta, and plunge into the Spanish sea.

A 4-hour boat rental in Barcelona will provide more opportunities — this will allow you to visit the famous Montgat beach, and swim in clean and clear water.

For an 8-hour boat trip, we recommend visiting the most outstanding and colorful places near Barcelona, such as::

  • Arenys de Mar
  • Castelldefels
  • Premia de Mar

During the break between sightseeing of the beauty of the port, you can taste specialties of Spanish cuisine in restaurants to continue this wonderful walk with renewed vigor. The length of its route and the distance from the coast depends on the type of boat. If you want to take a look at the world-famous resort of Sitges at least with one eye or walk along the chic Mediterranean coast of the Costa Brava, after visiting the progressive Blanes, hire a yacht or a motorboat — and you won’t regret it.

What services does our company offer besides yacht rentals?

To make your vacation on a yacht bright, eventful, and unforgettable, in addition to renting boats in Barcelona , our company provides the following services:

  • catering — booking food on board
  • photo and video filming
  • organization of entertainment on the water on a banana, wakeboard, flyboard, jet ski
  • decorating both the yacht itself and the deck with flowers, balls, and inscriptions, as well as its interior spaces — kitchens, cabins, halls
  • guided tours of the outstanding historical sites of Barcelona
  • host of events
  • DJ accompaniment of discos
  • invitation of popular artists for live performances
  • gift certificates for walks along the coast

Rent a boat

The ideal value, and money. The cost of their rental varies depending on the size of the yachts, the year of manufacture, and the popularity of the brand manufacturer, and is 100-350 euros/1 hour. The maximum capacity is up to 11 passengers.

Motor yachts

The rental price — 450-1200 euros/1 hour — is higher than other types of yachts. This is due to higher fuel consumption. However, this price justifies itself:

  • speed of movement, due to which visiting many places takes very little time;
  • level of comfort and a sense of luxury, because motor yachts have more space and more amenities.

The maximum passenger capacity is 20 guests.

The cost of renting catamarans is usually higher than classic sailing yachts, but cheaper than motor yachts, which is 250-550 euros/1 hour.

Depending on the dimensions, they can comfortably accommodate from 6 to 150 passengers on board.

Due to the stability of the water in any weather, catamaran trips are well tolerated even by those people who suffer from seasickness, and those who are constantly seasick on public transport.

This is a budget option for small companies of up to 9 people, with a rental price range of 100-350 euros/1 hour. In most cases, motorboats are rented by lovers of fishing, outdoor activities, and racing.

In the city of Barcelona, you can rent the following types of motor boats: speed boats with various toys and water activities, boats without a license, and luxury high-speed models.

These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

The city has become a hub for billionaires’ superyachts, banking on the strength of the “blue economy.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

yacht marina barcelona

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

  • What It’s Like to Watch an America’s Cup Race Right From the Water

We enjoyed a bucket-list day watching AC75 raceboats in Barcelona, courtesy of a charter sailboat loaded with gourmet food and Dom Pérignon.

Taihoro , which will be defending the America’s Cup for New Zealand, is a vessel of singular beauty: The sails are 87 feet high, it has a sci-fi-looking carbon-fiber hull, with slots where the sailors sit low during high-speed racing, and spindly, insect-looking foils that emerge as it maneuvers down the racecourse.

America's Cup AC75 Racing Barcelona

To watch these futuristic, technological marvels at home is one thing. But seeing them in real life makes me realize why America’s Cup is called F1 of the Seas. These racers—and the hydrogen-powered chase boats that shadow them—are unlike anything on the water, and we’ll get to spend a day watching them race, while enjoying Michelin-caliber meals, Champagne, and craft cocktails, courtesy of the Barcelona-based boutique hotel Almanac.

“You could watch from the beach, but here you have the opportunity to be in the thick of the action,” says the sailboat’s captain, David Mocholi, voicing my thoughts. It’s a blue-sky afternoon on the Mediterranean Sea, with temperatures of 81 degrees and winds between 8 to 10 knots. Perfect racing conditions. Even from the water, I can make out the crowds at the Fanzone Plaça del Mar looking out towards us. Onboard, there’s just 10 of us, with a fully stocked bar and a steady flow of haute cuisine.

Almanac AC75 Charter America's Cup

As Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and NYYC American Magic jockey for position at the start of the first race, an excited buzz sweeps across the spectator boats. You can feel the electric anticipation in the air. Some of the bigger sightseeing boats are standing room only, with fans crowding the best vantage points. Other vessels are testing their horns at full volume for the finish-line celebrations.

As part of the Almanac on Board package, the 45-foot Jeanneau will bring up to 10 guests to the races every Saturday until the final weekend, October 26, when the America’s Cup winner is crowned. The vessel is one of an assortment of possible charter boats that spectate during the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup racing in Barcelona.

Spectator Boats at the America's Cup.

The first race between the Italians and Americans is good, but not close. Luna Rossa crosses the finish line with a 40-second win. I note that our boat’s vibe, which is full of journalists, is more laid back than our neighbors, who are cheering at full volume and blasting their horns. Our group is more interested in the cuisine.

Not me. Having been a fan of sailboat racing for years, I’m determined to take full advantage of this opportunity. Our sailboat is slated to be in the preferred charter boat zone, but Mocholi has eased us into the AC Teams and Partner Boats zone, effectively sneaking into the VIP area for a much better view. But like every spectator boat, we’re still a fair distance from the course. The Guardia Civil and customs officers in rigid-hulled inflatables patrol the spectator zones, ensuring all boats stay behind the line.

America's Cup Racing in Barcelona.

Sailing tends to be considered a dull, slow sport by some. But foiling boats have changed the game by making racing fast, thrilling and won not just by speed, but also by tactics and risk. I follow the action live when the racers are closest, moving between the bow and cockpit for the best view. When the two boats disappear to the course’s far end, I watch in real-time on the boat’s iPad. All spectator boats have viewing systems rigged up.

As part of the charter, Almanac has five-star touches from its Barcelona property on board: The cushions and bespoke toiletries are nice, but even more so the large beach towels, sunscreen, and baseball caps we are gifted. Most welcome, however, is the tasting menu from the hotel’s restaurant, Virens, and craft cocktails from its rooftop bar, Azimuth. We enjoy appetizers at first and then a tapas-style feast, creatively prepared by the hotel’s chefs using local ingredients and served by their wait staff.

Almanac Boat Charter

During the event, the Dom Pérignon, is flowing and everyone is having a good time, even if they’re not as enamored as I am with the racing. As we slip back into Port Veil, the cool cranberry, vodka, and lime cocktail we sip is perfect after a day at sea.

The range of vessels around us shows how easy it is to be a waterborne spectator for the America’s Cup. And that’s exactly as it should be, especially now that the initial round robin is complete and the semi-finals will start on Saturday.

Almanac Craft Cocktail on America's Cup charter.

Almanac on Board packages start at $2,940 for two people for two nights accommodation in a suite, complimentary breakfast and private transfers to and from the port to watch the races on the Jeanneau 45.
