This work requires a larger facility, so you might need to move out of the garage and into a boatyard. If you don’t have access to a larger workshop, consider building a shed where you can work as you do the construction. Make sure there’s enough room to fit the boat and also allow you to work comfortably. To cover the shed, you can use opaque white tarps. 

Sheathe the Hull

Get all the materials you require for this stage in the construction, such as lots of resin, fiberglass, and foam for use in the hull cores. You’ll also require matting and glass roving to sheath the hull . 

Sheathing helps to make the hull impervious to water and other marine borers. But first, you need to prepare the hull using a rotary sander. To make it as smooth as possible, use light, sweeping strokes. This is a very dusty task so be prepared to wear a facemask and safety goggles. 

Install the Bulkheads

Next is installing the plywood bulkheads . You might need to call in friends to help turn the hulls or use a crane. In this step, you will need to laminate the hull sides on the molded hull panels and bond them above the bulkheads. Ensure the bulkheads are snug and sealed in place.

Construct the Interior Structure

Over the next couple of months, the boat work will involve joining the hulls together with the beams that you had made back in the garage. Then, install the cuddy cabin, decks , and the cockpit . Soon the boat will start to take the shape of a catamaran.

Next, proceed to construct the major structural components such as stairs, hatches, mini-keels, and the interior. Then comes the work of fairing the boat, which is quite labor-intensive. 

Finally, it’s time to apply primer on the catamaran boat and start the paintwork. Before painting the boat, you will need to do additional sanding to finish off the two layers of primer as well as fill all the pinholes. Since it’s a large boat, the catamaran has lots of surface area; thus, the sanding could get extremely exhausting—mentally and physically—at this point.

The painting can take a while, too. The hulls are the easiest to paint, but the topsides, non-skid, as well as masking and prepping could seem never-ending. 

The final stretch involves working on the center bridge deck cabin and other final touches like installing the engines, electricals, and plumbing. This is also the time to fix the rudders, rigging, mast, windows, and deck fittings.

Launch Your Cruising Catamaran

After many months or years of hard work, your cruising catamaran is finally ready to test the waters. After lowering the boat into the water, check carefully in case there are leaks. If none, you can set up the sails and take your catamaran out for your first cruise.

Hello, I am a French Quebecer who is original, imaginative, creative and who finds that all boats and catamarans have a huge flaw and a very big lack of logic. I would have a brand new concept…. I am sending this message to any catamaran creator – designer to make those who have the opportunity and the intelligence to want to know about my innovative idea which will finally upset the market much richer. An idea that will totally change the concept of sailing, navigation and save so much worry!! All I would ask for is a small percentage of each sale of the new product. To be able to make me produce one when I have enough!! It is certain that like that, you just want to tell me: come on Mr. Lessard give us your idea but do not take your word to help me in return! But, if you are the kind of man to have only one word and maybe have a proof of your good faith if the realization of the project would make it… I will be very happy!! Giving it to everyone wouldn’t bother me either…. all I would like is to be able to find flax fiber (too expensive carbon) to be able to try to make my catamaran myself. Because not rich! Do-It-Yourself: Build your own A Class catamaran!

Ever thought about building your own catamaran? Here's an illustrated guide to one sailors project building a beautiful A-Class catamaran out of plywood. A big thank you to the builder, Chris Williams, for letting me share his work with the rest of the beachcat sailors.

A skill, known in boat building as lofting, the skins which will make the hull are cut out of the lengths of plywood. The front and rear bulkheads are also cut out along width the center board cases

 

A jig must be constucted to conform the hull to shape. The jig is a large 20ft long table with many structural members to give it strength against the pressure of the hull skins. The hole in the jig is shaped to the final shape of the top of the hull.

A setup involving laminated spruce blocks glued to the sides, gunwhales and bulkheads serves as an anchoring point for the crossbeams.

The foam spacers are glued in place with epoxy with filler added.

Epoxy on decks using staples and packing strips for pressure.

Route and Plane off excess.

Cut centerboard slots, fiberglass front gunwhale.

Use ridiculous amount of filler (don't breath the stuff), epoxy, and sanding to get dynamite finish

Saturate boat with 3 coats epoxy.

Building your own catamaran is another option to getting into your own boat. Because of the huge dollars needed to buy a new or even a used catamaran, we would never have gotten a catamaran if we hadn’t built it ourselves.

Let’s start by saying that building any type of larger boat, especially a catamaran, can be one of the most intellectually and physically challenging things you will ever do.

It has been said that building a large boat is the closest a man can come to giving birth to a baby. In other words there is going to some discomfort and pain along the way; you will question yourself on whether this was such a good idea; it’s very difficult to reverse the decision; and though friends will support you, you will be on your own most of the time with your significant other if he/she is game.

Know your boat

You will intimately know every part of your boat. You will know where every wire, hose, bolt, bulkhead, rib, and support is because you installed them!

Pride of ownership

We have often thought what it would be like to just buy a boat from a manufacturer, and know that while owners who have spent a lot of cash (or future life to pay off the lien) their often possessive and competing-with-the Joneses could not begin to compare to our quiet glow of happiness and akinship we feel with Light Wave .

Our boat is like part of the family. So much time was spent on her that we have a major emotional investment. Every time we see our vessel – from a distance at anchor or approaching her in our marina, we say, “What a pretty boat! I can’t believe we built it!” Then that sense of accomplishment settles back in and we feel we have indeed earned the privilege of all of the beautiful experiences we have had sailing, cruising, exploring the beautiful BC Coast and much further a field (or should we say “an ocean”?).

You will be able to pay for the materials as you go and “donate” your time to the cause.

Get a newer design

Many of the production boats that are out there are designs of many years ago because the manufactures have to recoup their capital investment on the mold and production setup. When you build your own you have much newer designs to draw from.

Details on Our Boat Building Adventure

We had sailed our first boat Wave Dancer for five years and had many adventures on the British Columbia coast. In May 1996, I had just returned from a little one-week solo trip in the Gulf Islands of BC when I bought the book, The Cruising Multihull by Chris White (Future link to book review on our web site).

This is the book that got me going (Carllie was not yet convinced). I must have read it a half dozen times over the next 6 months, each time becoming more convinced that this was the way to go for our next boat. It was really still pre-internet web site days so I wrote to all the designers that were listed in the back of the book. Over the next several weeks packages of information started appearing in the mailbox (there is just something about getting packages in the mail – I guess it’s the anticipation). I would pour over these preliminary printed pages with pictures and accommodation layouts. Next, I put a few dollars down to buy the information packages and study plans from the top prospects.

I waited patiently for the study plans. It was like the night before Christmas when I was kid. Oooh the wait! Finally they came, and again I carefully scrutinized the next level of detail. Things were getting a little more serious. The top contenders were:

  • Chris White
  • James Wharram

I remember initially drooling over the Atlantic 42 by Chris White, still one of my favorite designs. It seemed to be so seaworthy (by the way if I run into about $800,000 USD any time soon, I am going to buy an Atlantic 55). The most important piece of advice that came out of the material was from Richard Woods:

“Build the smallest boat you‘d be happy with it.”
Axiom #1: The hours to build a catamaran is in almost in direct proportion to its weight.

Which brings us to Axiom #2:

Axiom #2: It takes about 1 hour to create 1 pound of finished boat.

In our case we spent 3,500 hours ( click here for full details on the construction hours ) to build a 4,000 lb. boat (just a little less than 0.9 hours per pound). If a boat’s empty weight is 8,000 lbs., it will probably take about 6,000 hours to build.

When you think about it, you can only mix and handle so much material per hour. More boat weight, more material, more hours. Sure there are some economies of scale on a bigger boat, but usually the systems become more complex and these take longer to install.

This decision process took 8 months and I figured we’d launch in 6 months. It was now January of 1997. Little did we know it would be 26 months and 3,500 hours between the two of us until we launched on June 5, 1999. We ordered the full plans and we were off and running.

We were ready to build, but where would we start the process? First of all, we live in a tiny 480 sq. ft. apartment in Vancouver. Back-yard building wasn’t exactly an option so I found a small garage nearby that we rented for 5 months.

After about 4 months in the garage, I had made all the small parts and it was time to build the hulls. This meant that we had to go larger facilities. We found space at Shelter Island Marina and Boatyard in Richmond. This is the biggest boat yard in the Vancouver area with dozens of commercial and private projects, big and small, under way.

We were out of money by then, so we sold our first boat so we could buy resin and fiberglass. It was a traumatic time as we said goodbye to our beloved Wave Dancer . We were now committed. We than had all the foam for the hull cores, barrels of resin, and huge rolls of matting and roving needed for the fiberglass skins delivered to our “domed stadium”. We kicked ourselves many times that we didn’t take a picture of this raw material stacked in one corner of the empty shed, so we could later show “before” and “after” photos. It was time to build the hulls.

Over the next several months we proceed to join the hulls with the beams I had built in the garage, and then to install the cuddy cabin, cockpit, and decks. By the spring of 1998, it was staring to look like a catamaran. Through the spring and summer of 1998, we continued with the major structural components: mini-keels, hatches, stairs, and interior. Then we went on to the very laborious work of fairing the boat before painting. Don’t under estimate that job!

By October 1998 we were ready to prime the boat and start painting. I really thought this would go quickly. I forgot that I would have to do two more complete sandings to sand off and finish the two layers of primer application. In addition we had to fill countless pinholes – a laborious process somewhat like hiking up a mountain – each time you get to what you think is the top, you see another summit!

The boat seemed to get bigger and bigger. Believe me, there is a lot of surface area on a catamaran. I clearly remember that last sanding: I had reached the end of my physical and mental endurance – I was exhausted. I was ready to move on to the next phase – any phase but more sanding!

We now started spray-painting the hulls bright yellow. It was around this time we decided on our boat name of Light Wave . The painting took over a month: the hulls being the easy part, it was the topsides, the nonskid, and all the masking and prep that seemed to take forever. Happily, the worst of the dust was gone.

By March 1999 we were in the home stretch. The center bridge deck cabin was completed so we took a week off from our paid jobs and lived on the boat in the shed so we could work all day and not waste time commuting. March, April and May were frantic months as we finished all the final touches: engine installation, rudders, windows, deck fittings, electrical, plumbing, mast, and rigging. It was May 22, 1999 and we decided that Saturday, June 5th would be “Launch Day” so we could send invitations to all of our friends. On the Friday night before Launch Day, we still had a number of final things to do, many of them outside. Unfortunately it was pouring rain. We were tired and very wet but the boat had to go into the water next day so we persevered on till everything was ready.

The moment of truth came as Light Wave was lowered into the water. While still in the slings of the Travelift, I jumped aboard to check for leaks. Of course there weren’t any! More food and laughs and tours of the boat for all attending. It was a great day.

Emotionally drained that night, we slept in Light Wave in the water for the first time. It was another week before we actually went out for our first trip as we had to sell the shed, setup sails, and install some final deck hardware.

To sum it up, building a catamaran was a great experience. We learned a lot. Carllie and I grew closer together through it all. We had a great time doing it. We had a beautiful catamaran to show for it. Now it was time for a catamaran adventure !

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

Principais diferenças entre os catamarãs e os barcos monocasco

Mais estabilidade.

Por terem uma boca maior, ou seja, o espaço da extremidade de um casco à extremidade do outro, os catamarãs são mais estáveis e acabam balançando menos.

A inclinação máxima de um catamarã é de 10° graus, enquanto que um barco monocasco se inclina até 45° graus, por isso, o fato de terem 2 casos o torna mais seguro e confiável, pois a possibilidade dele virar é mínima.

Uma das grandes diferenças é que os catamarãs e multicascos tem seu equilíbrio baseado na geometria, já nos monocasco é baseado na distribuição de peso.

O design do catamarã traz um desempenho melhor da embarcação em relação a velocidade e espaço são indiscutivelmente melhores que os conceitos tradicionais dos monocasco.

Resistência

Mais uma vez o seu design permite uma resistência maior à água, a sua flutuação ocorre principalmente sob as ondas como um submarino.

Os catamarãs são mais leves por não terem o contrapeso de quilha (a parte que fica no fundo do casco que dá equilíbrio à embarcação).

Acredita-se que o design principal do Catamarã surgiu há mais de 3000 anos, modelo que influenciou nas embarcações utilizadas pelos polinésios no Pacífico Sul.

Eles usavam um barco a velas e a remo, feitos de 2 troncos bem separados, para ir de uma ilha a outra.

William Dampier foi o 1° ocidental a avistar e escrever sobre a embarcação, em 1697, enquanto passava por uma comunidade de pescadores chamada Tamil Nadu, na Índia.

Nos escritos do aventureiro, ele descreve que a embarcação tinha apenas 2 troncos de madeira leve, os pequenos barcos carregavam apenas 1 homem e os pescadores o chamavam de catamarã.

Eles foram utilizados pela antiga dinastia do séc V, Tamil Chola, para invadir regiões do Sudeste Asiático, mais especificamente o atual Myanmar, Indonésia e Malásia.

No ocidente, o catamarã só se popularizou 200 anos mais tarde, quando o americano Nathanael Herreshoff fez seu próprio projeto, em 1877, para uma regata.

Como o seu barco era muito mais rápido em relação aos outros, ele foi duramente criticado e esse tipo de embarcação foi barrada da competição até 1970.

Ainda assim, em 1947, Woodbridge "Woody" Brown e Alfred Kumalae projetaram o 1° catamarã oceânico moderno.

E por sua velocidade, logo se tornaram populares para lazer, ganhando popularidade na Europa e depois, nas Américas.

Com o desenvolvimento de materiais e modernidade nas técnicas de construção, os catamarãs passaram a ser uma opção para várias áreas da engenharia naval, com seus diferentes tipos, sejam cascos convencionais, simétricos e assimétricos.

Atualmente, os catamarãs têm cada vez mais superado sua capacidade de carga e passageiros, com estruturas maiores e ganhando mais espaço nas navegações.

Tem sido considerado uma ótima alternativa para viagens curtas de até 1000 km, com velocidade superior a 30 nós.

Além de oferecer maior economia, conforto e estabilidade, comparado a outras embarcações.

Muita gente se deslumbra com o processo de fabricação dos meios de transporte e saber como é feito um barco multicasco é de curiosidade de muitos.

Sendo assim, vamos te contar de forma simples e resumida como é esse processo de construção e que materiais são utilizados.

A começar pelos materiais, os mais utilizados para os catamarãs são:

Madeira compensada;

Fibra de vidro;

Equipamento de terra.

Em geral, para o casco se utiliza fibra de vidro, alumínio, aço, madeira ou concreto armado.

Há também toda a estrutura interna de funcionamento como motor, encanamento e parte elétrica.

Por fim, os acessórios e materiais de acabamento, como janelas, lemes, acessórios de convés, mastro e cordame.

Agora vamos para o processo de construção de um catamarã

A construção de um barco pode levar cerca de 9 a 11 meses, variando de acordo com o modelo e materiais escolhidos.

Para começar, podemos dizer que o processo inicial para a fabricação do catamarã envolve a escolha de um local de construção, do design e dos materiais necessários.

A primeira fase de construção é o casco, que dependendo do tamanho se faz necessário um estaleiro.

Existem no país inúmeros estaleiros que produzem desde pequenas embarcações de madeira, lanchas de esporte e recreio, navios de grande porte, dentre outros mais sofisticados.

Uma embarcação de grande porte faz com que a sua construção seja feita em frente à água, para que o transporte não encareça tanto o produto.

Já a escolha do design do barco deve ser apropriada para o seu objetivo. O lado bom é que os designs dos catamarãs estão a cada dia mais inovadores, inclusive os materiais utilizados.

Começando pelo casco

O catamarã é composto por 2 cascos conectados a um convés. Para construí-lo é utilizado um molde de casco.

Depois de construído o casco, é feito todo o revestimento, para torná-lo impermeável à água.

Feito o casco, a próxima etapa é virá-lo, nessa hora, conta-se com a ajuda de um guindaste para colocá-lo acima de anteparas de madeiras que estejam bem firmes.

A partir daí, se inicia o processo de construção interna.

Na estrutura interna, as etapas são a junção dos cascos com as vigas, instalação de cabines, decks e a cabine de comando e logo sua embarcação ganhará a forma de um catamarã.

Ainda na etapa interna, tem a parte de instalação do motor, a parte elétrica e de encanamentos.

Aqui vale comentar que por questões de sustentabilidade e economia, muitos têm optado por barcos movidos a energia ou energia solar ao invés de diesel.

Depois de feitos todos os acabamentos internos, é só lançá-lo ao mar.

É claro que a construção envolve muito mais detalhes do que os mencionados aqui e que vão depender do tipo de catamarã escolhido.

Se de vela, motor ou elétrico, tamanho, objetivo, entre outros aspectos.

Velero – como hacer un velero o prao tipo catamaran o triamaran, velero – como hacer un velero o prao tipo catamaran o triamaran.

El deslizador es un tipo de embarcación muy recomendable, de construcción relativamente fácil y más seguro que cualquier barco. Por supuesto, no es una embarcación rápida, pero sí muy adecuada para navegar en aguas de poca profundidad o infestadas de vegetación y se presta especialmente para usar en ríos torrentosos.

Las figuras 1 y 2, que son vistas laterales y frontales, dan una idea clara de la construcción. Se empieza por hacer los pontones, que consisten en dos tablas clavadas a las divisiones verticales A-B.

Las tablas se rebajan en punta en los extremos delanteros, de proa; en los extremos traseros, a popa, se rebajan dejando una superficie plena, de 5 cm. de ancho, para colocar los timones. Los montantes C-D se clavan en los extremos.

Las divisiones se cortan de madera de 5 x 10 cm., cepillando los bordes exteriores en la curva de los costados. Todos los bordes externos se aplanan, si es necesario con cepillo, de suerte que los lados de los pontones se adapten satisfactoriamente, sin dejar aberturas.

En E, se encola un bloque cuadrado de 5 cm., bajo el medio de la tabla de cubierta, para asidero del tornillo de gancho destinado a sujetar los estayes del mástil.

El centro de éstos se marca mediante una cruz encima de cada tabla, como guías para insertar los ganchos. También se trazan líneas a lápiz al través, directamente encima del centro de las piezas divisorias para saber exactamente su posición. Esto servirá al fijar, después, las piezas transversales.

Velero – como hacer un velero o prao tipo catamaran o triamaran, Buena madera terciada:

Es menester adquirir madera terciada de buena calidad, que se preste para doblar en curva, y se corta en tiras, con el hilo de través, a fin de facilitar la operación de curvar. Los bordes externos de las tablas, divisiones y montantes de proa y popa se cubren con pintura espesa, se pone encima la madera terciada y se clava cuidando que haga junturas bien cerradas.

Cualquier juntura en los costados debe coincidir sobre las piezas divisorias. En los extremos delanteros de los bordes de la madera terciada deben unirse perfectamente, sin intersticios, y en los extremos de popa se igualan nivelando con los montantes D. La figura 3 muestra un detalle de construcción de los pontones.

Es preciso cubrir con algo los costados de los pontones, por ejemplo con calicó, porque de lo contrario el agua arruinaría a la madera terciada. Para el objeto se cortan tiras, bastante largas para que alcancen a todo el largo de cada costado y con un excedente de 2,5 cm. arriba y abajo, para doblar.

Velero – como hacer un velero o prao tipo catamaran o triamaran, el Forrado:

Después de dar a los costados una mano de albayalde espeso, se extiende encima el calicó, frotando para que se adhiera bien y no haga arrugas.

En los puntos de unión del material se dobladilla juntas las dos telas, a popa y proa, y se clavetea con clavitos de latón.

El excedente de 2,5 arriba y abajo se pega encima para mejor sujeción. Las partes curvas se recortan para evitar arrugas.

Entonces se cortan las piezas transversales, F-G, de unión entre los pontones, y se atornillan en posición. Dos tornillos bastarán a cada lado, los que se insertan en agujeros de guía hechos de antemano.

Para esto no se emplean tornillos ordinarios, sino tornillos especiales, como el que ilustra la figura 7, de 10 cm. de largo, que se insertan con llave de tuerca. Estos tornillos, de cabeza cuadrada, pasando por las piezas transversales, se alojan en las divisiones A-B, sirviendo de guía para esto las líneas trazadas a lápiz previamente sobre la cubierta.

Para cubrir los bordes dobladillados del calicó, se clavetean tiras cepilladas de madera de 1 por 2,5 cm. en los bordes superiores e inferiores, como en la figura 4. En los bordes curvos se emplean tiras más anchas, aserrando los bordes exteriores en la forma curva correspondiente.

Antes de poner estas tiras, su superficie inferior se cubre con pintura espesa a fin de impermeabilizar las uniones.

Velero – como hacer un velero o prao tipo catamaran o triamaran, los timones:

Los timones se cortan de madera de 12 mm. de espesor, preferiblemente madera dura como roble u olmo, con el hilo en sentido longitudinal, y se abisagran a popa de los pontones, como en la figura 5, empleando bisagras del tipo alargado que muestra la misma ilustración. Para que funcionen libremente, se redondean los bordes traseros de los timones, dejando un espacio intermedio de 5 mm. entre el timón y la popa.

En el centro de cada timón se inserta un sólido tornillo de ojo, en el borde. Los timones van conectados entre sí con una varilla de hierro de 3 x 9 mm. A la altura del borde de cada timón, estando éstos rectos, se perforan sendos agujeros en la varilla de conexión, para insertar a través de éstos los tornillos de ojo que van en el centro de cada timón.

Calicó se puede usar para la vela, un patrón de la cual se corta en papel. Este trabajo es fácil, si se hace correctamente. Se pegan con engrudo algunas hojas de papel hasta formar una superficie suficientemente grande, en la que se marca la línea a-b en un corte.

A la distancia correcta de b, se marca el punto c, y de ahí, a ángulo recto de a-b se traza la línea c-d. Se conectan los puntos a-d y b-d, y se corta.

Entonces se extiende el calicó, sin arrugas, se coloca encima el patrón con el borde a-d sobre la guarda de la tela, se prende con alfileres y corta el calicó, dejando un excedente de 2,5 cm. para dobladillos.

En cada ángulo se pone un pedazo de material para reforzar las esquinas, y se dobladilla alrededor, insertando cordel en los dobladillos a-b y b-d. A intervalos de 20 cm. se fijan ojales de latón para ligar al botavara y al mástil.

Why it’s effective: This powerhouse move trains “your glutes, adductors, low back, and quads in a way that makes you very strong systemically,” says Brockman. 

  • Set up squat rack with desired weight (or use just the bar).
  • Place barbell on upper back. 
  • Step a few feet back from squat rack, tuck pelvis, squeeze glutes, and descend into a squat for 3 seconds until glutes are slightly below parallel.
  • Squeeze glutes to come back up to standing. That’s 1 rep. 
  • Complete all reps, then walk barbell back to rack.

2. Bulgarian Split Squat

Why it’s effective: “This move emphasizes a deep range of motion that effectively stretches the glute to its maximum length,” Brockman explains. “Stretching a muscle to its full range of motion increases muscle length that, in turn, promotes muscle strength and hypertrophy.”

  • Stand 3 to 4 feet in front of bench or box, arms at sides, with a dumbbell in each hand. 
  • Bring left foot to rest on bench behind you, keeping hips pointing straight ahead.
  • Engage glutes, tuck pelvis, and lower down for 3 seconds, bringing back knee as close to floor as possible. Think about tipping torso forward (nose over toes) as you push hip of working leg back as far as it can go. 
  • Keep glutes squeezed and push through standing heel to reverse movement to return to start. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching.

Pro tip: It takes a little trial and error to find the ideal distance from the box for your body, so play around to find what works best.

Why it’s effective: “Creating muscle tension in your glutes by actively squeezing them while pushing your hips back helps maximize glute activation,” says Brockman.

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of thighs.
  • Engage glutes, push hips back, and bend knees very slightly as you simultaneously lower torso and allow dumbbells to track down thighs in a 3-second descent until they reach shins.
  • Squeeze glutes to immediately reverse movement to return to start. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching.

Pro tip: Keep your chest up and “proud” and squeeze shoulder blades together throughout the movement.

4. Deadlift 

Why it’s effective: “This is a powerful movement that engages the glute muscles as well as the hamstrings and back,” Brockman says.

  • Stand with feet slightly more than hip-width apart, barbell (loaded with desired weight) directly in front of feet. 
  • Engage glutes, hinge hips back, and descend to grasp barbell with both hands. Immediately reverse movement to stand, with barbell resting in front of thighs. That’s 1 rep.

5. Lateral Lunge To Box 

Why it’s effective: Because it targets the glute medius, this move helps sculpt the shape of the hips, “giving them a rounder, fuller appearance,” Brockman says.

  • Stand in front of bench or box with legs wide, toes pointing forward, hands holding a dumbbell goblet-style in front of chest.
  • Engage glutes, hinge hips back, and bend right leg to come into a lateral lunge, resting glutes on bench.
  • Push through heel of right foot to reverse movement to return to start, bringing right hip back fully parallel. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching. 

6. Single-Leg Bench RDL

Why it’s effective: “Isolating each glute individually while not having to worry about stabilizing the nonworking leg creates a stronger mind-muscle connection and promotes greater muscle activation in glutes,” Brockman explains.

  • Rest left knee and shin on bench, right foot on floor. Hold a single dumbbell in right hand in front of right thigh. 
  • Engage glutes, hinge hips back, and descend while simultaneously lowering torso to  allow dumbbell to track down right leg to mid-shin.
  • Slowly reverse movement to return to start. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching.

7. Hip Thruster

Why it’s effective: The “king” of glute moves, the thruster gets your hips into full extension at the top of the movement. Squeezing your glutes simultaneously helps “wake up” inactive glute muscle fibers, says Brockman.

  • Sit on floor with shoulders and back resting against bench, barbell (loaded with desired weight) at hip crease.
  • Push through feet and squeeze glutes as you roll onto back of shoulders and thrust hips up (for a count of 3 seconds) until upper body and hips are parallel tofloor. That’s 1 rep. Immediately repeat for all reps.

Pro tip: Focus on the squeeze at the top—not the lengthening or stretching at the bottom—to ensure glutes are fully engaged and create the highest level of muscle fiber recruitment.

8. Weighted Step-Up

Why it’s effective: “By pushing through your heel to lift your body up, you increase muscle activation and development in the glutes,” Brockman says. 

  • Stand on box, holding dumbbell in right hand at right side. 
  • Grasp a sturdy object in front of you with left hand. 
  • Engage glutes, shift hips back, and descend slowly for 3 seconds, tapping left toe to floor about 2 feet behind box. 
  • Squeeze glutes and drive through right heel (still on box) to reverse movement to return to start. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching.

Pro tip: Remember to keep both hips pointing forward throughout the movement. 

9. High Hip Hinge With Rotation

Why it’s effective: This move is “like a mini hip thruster for the glute medius” and achieves serious glute activation, Brockman says.

  • Start with left leg forward, right leg about 2 feet back (as if on railroad tracks), resting on right toes. Hold dumbbell with both hands between legs. 
  • Engage glutes, hinge hips back, and descend for a count of 3 seconds, twisting slightly to the left as you bring dumbbell to the outside of left heel. 
  • Gently tap floor with dumbbell, then reverse movement to return to start, being sure to bring right hip back to parallel with left. That’s 1 rep. Do all reps on one side before switching.

Cómo el multimillonario propietario de Victoria’s Secret se hizo accidentalmente con una participación de 800 millones de dólares en un unicornio de IA

Una demanda revela que una apuesta temprana por la empresa que más tarde se convertiría en CoreWeave, una startup de 19.000 millones de dólares, ha convertido a Les Wexner en uno de los mayores accionistas individuales del unicornio de la IA.

Les Wexner , el multimillonario de Victoria’s Secret que renunció a su empresa L Brands en 2020 en medio del escrutinio sobre sus vínculos con el delincuente sexual convicto Jeffrey Epstein, está sacando provecho del auge de la inteligencia artificial (IA).

Gracias a una inversión inicial de un millón de dólares en Atlantic Crypto , una empresa poco conocida que se convertiría en el gigante de la IA en la nube CoreWeave, el fideicomiso familiar de este hombre de 86 años posee ahora una participación de 720 millones de dólares en una de las startups de IA más valiosas del momento. El multimillonario de Ohio es una de las personas más ricas de Estados Unidos, con una fortuna  estimada en 6.300 millones de dólares .

La enorme participación de Wexner en la startup, valorada en 19.000 millones de dólares , fue revelada en una demanda presentada ante el Tribunal de Distrito de Estados Unidos en el Distrito Sur de Nueva York en mayo de 2024 por la firma de gestión de patrimonios Florence Capital Advisors. La gestora de dinero con sede en Nueva York afirma que tenía derecho a una comisión de 6,9 millones de dólares por asesorar al fideicomiso familiar de Wexner para que invirtiera en la startup en 2019.

CoreWeave , que proporciona acceso a chips muy codiciados utilizados en la construcción de modelos de IA, se encuentra entre las startups de IA más valoradas que han surgido de la generalización de la inteligencia artificial. Consiguió 7.500 millones de dólares en deuda de Blackstone en mayo, y  1.100 millones de dólares  en capital a principios de este año para construir una red masiva de centros de datos que proporciona la potencia de cálculo necesaria para entrenar la IA. Pero en 2019 era una minera de criptomonedas en apuros que acababa de empezar a subarrendar sus  chips gráficos  a startups de IA desde un garaje de Nueva Jersey.

CoreWeave recaudó 1,2 millones de dólares en una ronda semilla en marzo de 2019, según datos de Pitchbook. El gestor de dinero de Wexner, Greg Hersch, de Florence Capital, invirtió 1 millón de dólares entonces, recogiendo más tarde otros 600.000 dólares en acciones de la ronda de serie A de la empresa y doblando de nuevo a través de una nota convertible adicional. Todo ello se colocó en un fideicomiso establecido en beneficio de los cuatro hijos de Wexner: Sarah, Hannah, David y Harry.

Ahora, esas inversiones se han convertido en una participación de 720 millones de dólares en la startup de IA que, según se rumorea, busca una  oferta pública inicial  el año que viene… y una disputa legal sobre lo que parece ser un premio gordo accidental.

La disputa es un nido de ratas de las puñaladas por la espalda de las finanzas neoyorquinas que implica a un dúo de padre e hijo contratado para gestionar el dinero de Wexner después de que Jeffrey Epstein supuestamente robara 46 millones de dólares de los fideicomisos de su familia, una participación separada de 100 millones de dólares en CoreWeave realizada por un fondo de cobertura en quiebra, acusaciones de  doble inmersión  y la misteriosa desaparición de archivos que contenían registros sobre las finanzas del multimillonario.

Florence Capital niega todo esto e insiste en que se le deben unos honorarios por un asesoramiento de inversión que generó «una rentabilidad casi inimaginable del 30.986%» cuando Wexner vendió 71 millones de dólares en acciones de CoreWeave en noviembre de 2023. Esa venta, combinada con la participación restante estimada de Wexner en CoreWeave, hace que la ganancia total de la inversión sea de algo menos de 800 millones de dólares. (Wexner, Florence Capital y CoreWeave no respondieron a una solicitud de comentarios).

La inversión de Wexner en CoreWeave coincidió con una apuesta por los centros de datos que apuntalan cada vez más la ola de IA. Desde 2019, ha vendido más de  450 millones de dólares  en terrenos alrededor de su casa en New Albany, Ohio, y en el vecino condado de Licking, a gigantes tecnológicos como Google, Meta y Facebook, y a potencias de Wall Street como Blackstone, que los han utilizado para construir centros de datos masivos. Con más de 15.000 millones de dólares en inversiones previstas en centros de datos anunciados para los condados de Franklin y Licking sólo en el último año, según el organismo de control de seguimiento de subvenciones corporativas Good Jobs First, con sede en Washington D.C., Wexner está bien posicionado para acuerdos similares en el futuro. A través de su empresa de desarrollo inmobiliario, la New Albany Company, aún posee tierras de cultivo en la zona por valor de unos 850 millones de dólares, según las estimaciones  de  Forbes.

Una  investigación   de Forbes  publicada en abril esbozaba el papel crucial que Wexner desempeñó entre bastidores para llevar a New Albany una fábrica de chips de Intel valorada en 20.000 millones de dólares. El suburbio de Columbus, Ohio, pudo cerrar el trato con Intel en una competición con docenas de otros estados porque la empresa New Albany parceló un bloque de 1.000 terrenos agrícolas «listos para la pala» para lo que Intel espera que sea la mayor planta de semiconductores del mundo. Se calcula que el multimillonario obtuvo unos beneficios de 35 millones de dólares sólo con esta operación. Está en proceso de construir una urbanización de uso mixto de 400 acres adyacente al emplazamiento de Intel para alojar a sus proveedores, y todavía estaba comprando activamente más terrenos en fecha tan reciente como el 25 de julio.
