James Island Yacht Club is a great place to do some boating and is also a really good event space. This area has some of the best views of Charleston from the water as you can see just about the entire Peninsula from a unique perspective. I really like the big dock and waterfront as it goes pretty far out on the water and is very peaceful and beautiful. The James Island Yacht Club is very well maintained and is a nice place to visit and be a part of.

Beautiful property and views! Bartenders were welcoming! We went in fall so a little rainy Still took the time to walk out on beautiful dock. A place I would love to join and relax in spring. Club building itself was smaller and older ..could use modernization or give it more of a perIod feel. If I lived in South Carolina I would definitely spend more time there.

What can I say about JIYC? It's a private yacht club, but growing up near it, you know how to get in, which is what I did most of my childhood. The gate was open most of the time back then, but now they are very stengy about it. If you're not a member, people will know it and approach you about it, but you can't blame them. They pay a decent amount to be in it. It's got THE BEST views of the city of Charleston around. If you're not a member, you could always just go to Sunrise Park next door. Jumping off the dock, shark tooth hunting, fishing, crabbing, sailing, swimming, that's what I spent most of my childhood doing there. It holds a special place in my heart, especially with Charleston being over run by transplants now.

I sailed here last year for the James Island Open. While I found race management to be good, the on shore support and club staff where quite nasty in their interactions with competitors. I found the guy running the lift to be needlessly rude, and the yard master managing the dry slips had his head so far up his you know what that I am not surprised he didn't see what was going on at all. I like good competition, but this was not a fun place to sail out of.

I love the James Island Yacht Club. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is one of the best views in Charleston. You are directly across from the downtown pennisula with the Ashley River Bride to the left and a beautiful view of the Ravenel Bridge and ocean to the right. Sunsets are amazing as you watch the sun disappear behind our beloved city. The bar is small and usually occupied by old men, but what else do you expect from an old yacht club. The facility is nice with a small reception hall and covered pavillion outside. There is a playground for the kids, and dock for fishing and boating. Find someone that's a member and ask them to take you to this hidden gem.

Really cool place to go watch the sunset, if you can get in. Private club. Had our wedding reception there and it was great. Room is a tight squeeze, so if hosting a wedding reception, don't expect to be able to have a sit down meal for more than 25 people.

NEW Dock at the James Island Yacht Club

Press_Release

You know you want it...

Mocka Jumbies and Rum...

New Dock at the James Island Yacht Club

James Island Yacht Club marked the grand opening of its new dock, located at the end of Wampler Drive in CharlestonHarbor, on James Island, SC, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, March 10th.  The Club’s Commodore, Mike Spivey, as well as many of the club’s members, and professionals who worked on the project were present for the ceremony. The new dock replaces the club’s former launching facilities located at the same site.

The club’s existing fixed pier and small launch float were replaced with a new fixed pier and 400’ of concrete floating docks from Bellingham Marine. “The [new] dock was constructed with great care and sacrifice by a dedicated group of yacht club members who served unselfishly to ensure its success,” remarked Spivey.

Situated at the end of the new fixed pier is a 240’ Unifloat dock for short term moorage and running parallel to the pier is a 160’ Unifloat launch dock.  Two new gangways provide pedestrian access to the floating docks from the pier and a hoist helps move boats in and out of the water.

“The new facilities have had a positive impact on the club as well as the community,” said David B. Hazeltine, lead architect on the project for Cusick Hazeltine Architects, LLC.  “Without Bellingham Marine’s involvement, the project would not have been supported by the club.  The company’s extra efforts and dedication to the process of working through the design and pricing made all the difference and made it a pleasure to work through the details.”

James Island Yacht Club was established over 100 years ago to promote sailing among its members and the community.  The club has an active membership base and is best known for their sailing programs, community events and most notably for the Special Olympics Regatta.

As the world’s leading marina design-build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat® concrete floating dock systems as well as timber and metal frame systems.  The company also produces Unistack® dry stack systems for marinas worldwide.

Youth Summer Sailing

Youth summer sailing – open to non members.

Our camp offers morning, afternoon, and full-day sessions for kids ages 7 to 18, looking to learn more about the basics of sailing/racing, and kids that are interested in on-the-water adventures. Lessons run weekly from June 10th until August 9th. For more information on the difference between our sailing and adventure class,  Please click the  Registration notes/help  on Clubspot to help with questions that you may have regarding the program and decision making when choosing classes.  Click Here to Register In the event of a waitlist, members will take priority. If you're interested in working at our junior sailing program contact Caden Wheeler with your resume and US Sailing Certification.  Please contact Caden Wheeler at [email protected] for more information

CAMP NOTES AND REMINDERS

With the first week of camp starting this Monday, I just wanted to send a thank you for supporting Jr. Sailing here at the James Island Yacht Club. This Summer is going to be more packed with activities and with new boats that we have added to our fleet over the past 9 months since last year.

There are a few things that I just want to remind people of what to bring and expect. The current structure of the program is as follows.

0830 - Gates will open and drop off begins

0900 - Classes begin

1130 - Sailors return back to the docks

1200 - Lunch begins ( Pick up for AM sessions and Drop Off for PM Sessions begins)

1300 - PM Sessions begin

1600 - Sailors return back to the docks

1700 - Day and Program Concludes

Now, if you are in the afternoon sessions, you are more than welcome to drop your sailor off at the beginning of lunch and at 1300, either way works.

What to bring

Your child will need a life jacket to be able to participate in/on the water. Please be sure that it is for their appropriate weight. If you need to purchase one, Amazon has great deals on good brands such as Stohlquist, Spinlock, Gill, etc.

Gloves for sailing: gardening gloves with dipped grip on the palms, or regular sailing sport gloves.

Water bottle

Sunscreen

Closed toed shoes (Crocs, Walmart Water Shoes, sailing boots are all great choices)

Appropriate gear for the weather.

A watch with a timer that is waterproof  ( Advanced, 420 classes only)

 After Camp Activities

So at the end of each day, the CHS Harbor stays busy with regards to the sailing world. This one applies to the C420 Class, but on Tuesdays, the College of Charleston puts on a great practice race from 5:45 - 7:30. It’s $10 to join each week and you are allowed to use their boats. Wednesdays are best suited for the adults and/or more advanced sailors as CORA (Charleston Ocean Racing Association) runs 1 race that will take you all over the Harbor. Please contact me directly if you are interested in joining and I’ll try to figure out a boat for you to go on. Last But not least, Thursday Night Racing at JIYC. This is a really informal/ fun way to get into racing and testing your sailors skills at what they learned! This will start at 6:30p on Thursdays, and parents are more than welcome to come and hang out here at JIYC. Caden Wheeler JIYC Sailing Director

Their facilities include far more than a parking lot and a boat dock. This is a resort-style club with RV camping sites and permanent summer homes. Another amenity on the resort is their restaurant called the Lakeside Grill which is a popular spot for delicious seafood.

This resort also includes fun activities for the children so that the entire family gets to enjoy their vacation-like stay at Plum Branch. Hilton Head Island is a premier vacationing and resorts location and it simply wouldn’t be the same without the South Carolina Yacht Club. It all started in 1989 with a special black-tie event attended by 700 guests.

The design of the club itself brings back memories of the “in” place to be for popular residents and visitors to Hilton Head Island. Beautiful art, ceramics, and décor bring the club to life and nearly take visitors back in time.

Of course, boating is the central theme of this yacht club, but attention to detail and an ambiance of elegant life on the island create a special sense of charm, unlike most boat clubs.

Because the island is a paradise resort, the amenities of the South Carolina Yacht Club match or exceed other resort offerings.

Final Thoughts

One of these boat clubs is likely to offer you the best value for your individual needs as well as your various activity and experience levels. The cost of membership is also an incredibly important factor in deciding which boat club is for you.

Because these fees vary greatly and can change without notice, it is best that you contact each club for their individual membership pricing plans.

Whichever one you choose; you are just a few steps away from having fun on the water!
