Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  RM-1050

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 23.0 suggests that, in the right hands, the RM-1050 will have enough performance to leave most other sailboats of similar waterline length well astern.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 38.3 would usually mean that the RM-1050 would have a tendency to heel uncomfortably in a gust, and need to be reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

However, as she has much of her ballast concentrated in the bulbs at the foot of her keels, she's likely to be considerably stiffer than her published Ballast/Displacement Ratio might suggest.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 139, tells us the RM-1050 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer to a degree.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 16.1 suggests that the RM-1050 will have the motion underway to that of a lightweight racing boat. Crew comfort will often be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Upwind in lively conditions the RM-1050 will slam enough to shake your fillings out with a motion that most cruising sailors have no desire to get used to.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula of 2.4 tells us that a RM-1050 would not be as good a choice of sailboat for ocean passage-making, owing to the increased risk of capsize in strong winds and heavy seas when compared to a sailboat with a CSF of less than 2.0.

More about the RM-1050

Accommodation

The RM-1050 sailboat has a spacious and bright interior with a large saloon, a galley, a chart table, a bathroom and two cabins. The fore cabin has a double berth with a length of 6’ 8” and a width of 5’ 2” at the head and 3’0” at the feet. The aft cabin has a maximum headroom of 6’ 1”. The saloon can also be converted into two additional berths. The boat can accommodate up to six people comfortably.

Sail Plan & Rigging Options

The RM-1050 sailboat has a cutter rig with a deck-stepped mast, two levels of spreaders and a 25° angle. The spars are made of aluminum and the standing rigging is 1x19 strand wire. The boat has a mainsail, a genoa, a jib and a symmetric spinnaker. The upwind sail area is 775 ft² and the downwind sail area is 1324 ft². The sail plan and rigging options are summarized in the following table:

  • Mainsail 409 ft²
  • Genoa 366 ft²
  • Jib 172 ft²
  • Spinnaker 915 ft²

Keel Options

The RM-1050 sailboat has two keel options: a twin keel version and a single fin keel version. The twin keel version has two asymmetric fins with bulbs that allow a shallower draft of 5’3” while maintaining performance. The twin keel version also enables beaching and stability on the ground. The single-fin keel version has one fin with a bulb and two spade rudders that provide more manoeuvrability and responsiveness. The single fin keel version has a deeper draft of 6’7”.

Sailing Performance

The RM-1050 sailboat is a fast cruising sailboat that has a light displacement, a high sail area to displacement ratio and a low comfort ratio. These ratios indicate that the boat is very high performing, especially in light wind, but also less comfortable and less suited for ocean passages than heavier and stiffer boats. The boat is best suited as a racing boat or a coastal cruiser that can handle moderate offshore conditions. The boat is stable and stiff thanks to the ballast in the bulbs of the keels but also needs to be reefed early to avoid excessive heeling. The boat has a good balance between speed and stability but also requires skill and attention from the crew.

The Designer, Marc Lombard

Marc Lombard is a French naval architect who has designed many sailboats for racing and cruising. Some of his sailboat designs are:

  • RM: A range of plywood-epoxy cruising sailboats built by Fora Marine. They include the RM-890, RM-970, RM-1070, RM-1180, RM-1270 and RM-1370;
  • Jeanneau Sun Odyssey: A series of fibreglass cruising sailboats built by Jeanneau. They include the Sun Odyssey 319, 349, 389, 410, 440 and 490;
  • Jeanneau Sun Fast: A series of fibreglass performance sailboats built by Jeanneau. They include the Sun Fast 3200, 3300 and 3600;
  • Catana: A range of carbon-infused catamarans built by the Catana Group. They include the Catana 42, 47, 50, 53, 59 and 70;
  • Bali: A range of innovative catamarans built by the Catana Group. They include the Bali 4.0, 4.1, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, 4.8 and 5.4.

Cruisers' Questions about this Sailboat...

What are the advantages of the twin keel configuration?

The twin keel configuration allows the RM-1050 to have a shallower draft while maintaining performance thanks to the asymmetric fins with bulbs. It also enables the boat to beach easily and stably.

What is the HN rating of the RM-1050?

The HN rating or "Handicap Nationale" is an empirical rating system used in France to compare the relative speed of different monohulls. The RM-1050 sailboat has an HN rating of 24, which indicates that it is faster than most other sailboats of similar size and design.

What is the CE design category of the RM-1050?

The CE design category indicates the ability to cope with certain weather conditions according to the European Union standards. The RM-1050 sailboat has a CE design category of A, which means it can handle wind force up to 9 and waves up to 10 m.

RM 1050, the journey without drag

rm yachts 1050

How to choose your used sailboat? This week RM 10.50. A unit built by the Fora Marine yard with an epoxy plywood hull. A very successful model that launched the project.

Emmanuel Van Deth

  • Production: 1998 to 2011 at 115 copies
  • Price: from 78 000 euros

RM 10.50

The very wide hull designed by Marc Lombard is in fact excellent for downwind sailing and in the breeze, conditions in which he can exceed 10 knots if he is not overloaded. In light, choppy upwind conditions, the performance will disappoint those used to lively racing yachts .

The very short deckhouse clears a huge foredeck, much appreciated for manoeuvres such as lazing around in good weather. The slotted rigging makes it possible to adopt a genoa with overlap and facilitates the circulation on the side decks.

The particularly wide cockpit is equipped with four lockers. Inside, there is also plenty of storage space thanks to a large hold behind the toilet area and a multitude of lockers.

On the layout side, the yard offers a panoramic deckhouse, a U-shaped kitchen and a chart table facing the road. A little further down, a saloon for 6 people. Beware of the barrotage which bruises the skulls of the most distracted!

In addition to the two benches in the saloon, two sea berths are provided along the sides. At the bow, a Breton bed. Under the cockpit, a double cabin.

The RM 1050 is unquestionably an excellent ocean-going yacht. Ready for a transatlantic race!

RM 10.50

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

Spearhead of the Fora Marine shipyard , this robust boat is a revolution in itself. With its two keels and panoramic deckhouse, it looks like nothing known - except for its predecessors, the 800 and 900.

Its construction method is original: the triple chine hull is made of epoxy CP, the deck plan is in polyester and the keels - designed to withstand daily groundings - are mounted on a metal frame, as on the famous Danish X's

RM 10.50

The advantages

  • Excellent offshore sailboat
  • Spacious accommodation adapted to life at sea
  • Panoramic vision

Disadvantages

  • A little stuck in the water in light weather
  • The CP epoxy hull is not very resistant to small shocks. Keep a close eye on water infiltration
  • Provide protection for portholes in hot weather

RM 10.50

But what is he missing?

A hull with a little less wetted surface and two rudders.

The equivalent today?

Fora Marine's latest model, the RM 1070 The 1050 has the same specifications as the 1050, with an inverted bow and a more modern hull!

NEW LISTING – RM Yachts 1050 ‘KNOYDART’

RM Yachts sales UK

Wednesday 22nd December 2021

Mark Cameron Yachts are delighted to be appointed to act in the sale of the 2008 RM Yachts 1050 ‘KNOYDART’.

Everyone knows when an RM Yachts creation sails past. The hard-chined hull and sleek modern lines with flush foredeck and open transom are immediately recognisable. Introduced in 2009 the RM1050 is the most popular design from the French builder to date, remaining in production through until 2011. The basic hull of the RM1050 has gone on to underpin its successors with small tweaks to the bow and stern for the launch of the RM1060 and RM1070.

The RM1050 with its modern lines has much in common with the sportier offerings from the likes of Pogo and Django with its flat underwater sections and beamy aft sections providing great performance under sail. RM have deliberately steered away from the minimalist Mini Transat styling found with other builders taking the time to create modern performance cruisers which offer the comfort long-distance cruisers require.

KNOYDART is a one-owner example of the RM1050 . Since her delivery trip from the factory to Scotland under her own keel she has proved immensely capable; completing a 2-year Caribbean circuit between 2015 and 2017. Since new she has enjoyed continual professional maintenance with a comprehensive inventory including highlights such as:

  • Non-slip painted panels to finish decks and cockpit, professionally repainted summer 2020

RM Yachts: French plywood sailboat manufacturer

Over 30 years of plywood yacht building expertise.

Welcome to RM Yachts!

French sailboat manufacturer since 1989, our shipyard based in La Rochelle is specialised in the construction of fast cruising yachts of 30ft to 45ft in plywood and epoxy – approximately 9 to 14 meters.

Whether you are looking for a coastal cruising sailboat, or planning longer open sea trips, such as Atlantic, Pacific crossing, or round-the-world sailing, there will always be an RM yacht fitting your project.

We are actually the sole shipyard and manufacturer having built over 500 monohull sailboats using this material and this sailing yacht building technique. Needless to say, we know plywood-epoxy in-and-out.

This material’s benefits are numerous: lightness and stiffness, for increased performance under sail, and a dry and sane interior atmosphere, thanks to its thermal and phonic specifications.

Not to mention its reduced impact on the environment, compared to other materials usually found in naval construction (GRP, polyester, etc.).

Designed by award-winning architect Marc Lombard, RM yachts are 100% made in France, and then sail around the world. Our clients frequently share their anecdotes and logbooks from their solo or family adventures on our modern sailing boats.

Available in different appendage versions (single-keel, twin-keel, lifting-keel, single or twin rudder), RM Yachts are customisable, starting with their hull colour and interior design.

Advising you to choose the best cruising sailboat

Thanks to our many years of experience as a sailing yacht manufacturer, we have designed our website to provide you with all the information you need to select your next cruising yacht :

  • What is important when choosing a cruising sailboat?
  • What is the best size for a coastal or bluewater cruising yacht?
  • How to choose the best sailboat to live on?
  • What options are to be considered when preparing an ocean crossing or a circumnavigation?

Our F.A.Q. section is also a great source of information to help you find the ideal sailing boat according to your needs and sailing plans.

You are more than welcome to visit our premises, and we can also set up a sea trial! Our team will be more than happy to help you configure your brand-new sailing yacht

Review of Rm 1050

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 680.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Rm 1050 has been built with different keel alternatives.

The Rm 1050 is equipped with a bilge keel. A bilge keel is a double keel, which allows the boat to be beached. Bilge keels are the most popular keel for tidal waters.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.60 - 1.70 meter (5.25 - 5.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Unknown keel type

This keel is also made of iron.

Rm 1050 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.23 - 1.33 meter (4.04 - 4.34 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Rm 1050 is 2.32, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Rm 1050 is about 259 kg/cm, alternatively 1452 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 259 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1452 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 41m 2 (441 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.
