About lAKE hURON

Why is Lake Huron a good sailing destination?

Lake Huron, with its mesmerizing blend of vast waters, diverse landscapes, and rich history, stands as one of Ontario’s premier sailing destinations. But what truly elevates it from merely being a sailing spot to an unmissable yachting experience? Let Yachting.Rent elucidate why Lake Huron is every sailor’s dream.

Firstly, the sheer scale of Lake Huron promises variety. As one of the Great Lakes, it boasts a vastness that’s rivaled by few, offering a palette of experiences for sailors. From the tranquil bays that promise solitude to open waters that test your sailing prowess, Lake Huron’s diverse terrains cater to both novices and seasoned mariners.

The lake’s geographical layout further enhances the sailing appeal. The famed Georgian Bay, often termed the ‘sixth Great Lake’, is a labyrinth of over 30,000 islands. This maze not only presents navigational challenges for those who seek them but also reveals hidden coves, pristine beaches, and secluded anchorages that provide intimate encounters with nature.

Moreover, Lake Huron’s natural beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. Think dramatic limestone cliffs, dense cedar forests echoing with bird calls, and waters that shift from clear turquoise to deep blue. Sunsets here are events unto themselves, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson. Nightfall reveals another spectacle: with minimal light pollution, the lake becomes a stargazer’s paradise, the Milky Way stretching overhead in all its glory.

Cultural and historical experiences further enrich your journey. Lake Huron’s shores have witnessed the tapestry of time, from Indigenous settlements to European explorers, from fishing communities to maritime trade routes. Sailing here is akin to navigating through living history. Stop by any of the coastal towns, and you’re likely to encounter heritage lighthouses, age-old shipwrecks, and vibrant local festivals that celebrate the lake’s legacy.

Adding to the experience is the infrastructure in place to support sailors. Marinas dotting the coastline are well-equipped, offering modern amenities and services. Whether it’s a quick repair, a supply refill, or local sailing tips, you’re never too far from assistance.

Yachting.Rent recognizes the allure of Lake Huron and strives to elevate your sailing experience here. With our commitment to service, safety, and luxury, we aim to make your voyage not just about the destination, but also about the joy of the journey. In Lake Huron, Ontario, every gust of wind and ripple of water echoes with tales of adventure and wonder. Join us, as we set sail into this storybook landscape, crafting memories that last a lifetime.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Lake Huron

Lake Huron, a jewel of Ontario’s Great Lakes, offers vast sailing expanses, intricate coastlines, and numerous islands. For those eager to explore its maritime treasures, a critical decision awaits: choosing between a sailing boat and a catamaran. At Yachting.Rent, we provide insights and options for both, ensuring you set sail on the vessel that best matches your nautical aspirations.

Sailing Boats: The Essence of Tradition For purists, the romance of Lake Huron is best captured on a traditional sailing boat. These vessels, with their singular hulls and majestic sails, offer an authentic sailing experience. As you tack and jibe through the waves, there’s an undeniable thrill in harnessing the wind’s power and feeling the boat’s intimate response to Lake Huron’s moods.

Sailing boats are perfect for those who seek challenges. Their responsive nature demands a keen understanding of the wind and waters. Moreover, due to their deep keel, these boats are exceptionally stable, ensuring a smooth sail even when Lake Huron shows its tempestuous side. However, this keel depth can limit accessibility to some of Lake Huron’s shallower coves and bays.

Catamarans: A Symphony of Space and Stability Catamarans, with their twin hulls, bring a different flavor to Lake Huron exploration. Their design lends unparalleled stability, minimizing the rocking that some sailors find disconcerting. This makes catamarans a popular choice for families or groups, as they promise a more relaxed sailing experience.

One of the catamaran’s crowning glories is its space. With expansive deck areas and spacious interiors, these vessels are floating luxury suites. Whether it’s sunbathing on the deck, hosting a lakeside party, or simply enjoying panoramic views of the Ontario coastline, catamarans deliver in style. Their shallow draft also allows sailors to navigate closer to beaches or explore hidden lagoons that might be inaccessible to traditional sailing boats.

Making Your Choice with Yachting.Rent Every sailor’s preferences are unique. Some are drawn to the dance of a sailing boat with the wind, while others lean towards the expansive luxury of a catamaran. Lake Huron, with its diverse offerings, is a playground for both.

At Yachting.Rent, we pride ourselves on understanding these nuances. Our experts are on hand to guide you through the choice, considering factors like the duration of your voyage, your sailing expertise, and the kind of Lake Huron experience you seek.

In the grand tapestry of Lake Huron’s waters, whether on a sleek sailing boat or a luxurious catamaran, the promise remains the same: unforgettable memories, breathtaking views, and the joy of the open water. With Yachting.Rent, set sail on Lake Huron, Ontario, in the vessel that feels like an extension of your very soul.

Welcome to Lake Huron

Click here to jump down to the many ports around Lake Huron OR

Click a location on the map to go to a port.

Lake Huron is the second largest Great Lake by surface area, the third largest by volume. By comparison, it is 3 times larger than Lake Ontario. It has the most extensive shoreline of all of the lakes (over 4 times that of Lake Erie and over 5 times that of Lake Ontario). This is a BIG lake!

Here are some facts about this magnificent lake:

  • length: 206mi / 332km
  • width: 183mi / 245km
  • depth: 195ft / 59m
  • deepest: 750ft / 229m
  • surface: 23,000sq mi / 59,600sq km
  • coastline: 3,827mi / 6,157km / 3,326nm (including islands)

Most commonly, it is said to have been named after the aboriginal peoples who lived along its shores. However, these people referred to themselves as 'Wendat'. It has been suggested that the name actually derives from the Old French word 'hure' meaning a shock of hair or, as we know it, a mohawk-style haircut or headdress. Another name that connects Lake Huron with the early French explorers is 'la mer douce' or the Sweetwater Sea. This description was given to Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Quebec by Etienne Brule, the youth who went on to become the first European to set eyes on each of the Great Lakes. The term has since come to refer to the entire Great Lakes and is one that we here at Great-Lakes-Sailing.com happily embrace!

On the east side of the lake lies Georgian Bay. This huge bay is about 80% of the size of Lake Ontario. Dotted with tens of thousands of small islands (collectively known as the 30,000 islands), Georgian Bay is a delight to a cruising sailor.

At the northwest corner of Georgian Bay lies Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world. This hidden gem offers a spectacular, untouched landscape, over 100 small, pristine lakes and superb fishing for the angler.

The North Channel lies between Manitoulin Island and the north coast of Lake Huron. It is recognized as the finest freshwater cruising ground in the world and one of the top overall cruising grounds world wide. It offers unparallelled beauty as you sail its 160 nm length.

To the southwest lies another large bay – Saginaw Bay. It too offers an extensive cruising ground with over 1,100 sq mi / 2,900 sq km of surface area and over 150 nm of coastline. All-in-all, a lot of water and many many places to explore!

Lake Huron is bounded by the province of Ontario and state of Michigan. Its coastline is far more rugged than its southern neighbours, especially the further north you go. Harbours are about evenly split with more or less three dozen on either the Canadian or American sides of the lake. The character of the coastline is rural extending well up the lake. The Saginaw Bay region is intensively farmed as is the southeast Canadian shoreline. However, as you go north of the Bruce peninsula, you begin to see another side to the complex character of both Lake Huron and the Great Lakes.

The population becomes noticeably thinner, the landscape much more rugged and the scenery increasingly more stunning. Small towns and communities replace large cities. A resource-based economy centred on forestry and mining edges out farming and manufacturing.

But, for the cruising sailor, the rewards are huge! Imagine exploring countless thousands of small islands and inlets or heading deeper up Baie Fine – one of the largest freshwater fjords in the world. A sailing paradise awaits you.

Check out these ports and harbors in the following port reviews and set your course for adventure.

Mansi, Philip, Holly, Mack, Karla, Zach & Eva  are the magic behind the housekeeping department. They keep everything ship shape and shiny.

1988 Silverton 40 Foot Sport Fisherman! A Fishermen's Paradise!

WALKTHROUGH OF OUR FISHING MACHINE

The Silverton 40 Convertible’s styling is conservative. Designer Bob Rioux gave the boat a long foredeck, swept-back cabin topped with a flybridge, and a distinctive stepped sheer that breaks well aft. The fishing-oriented cockpit and flybridge steering station, set up to give the helmsman a good view of the angling action, making the boat popular with anglers. Wide side decks help give the boat all-around deck access. The fiberglass hull has a modest 14 degrees of transom deadrise, and standard power came from twin 350-hp Crusader gas engines for a cruising speed of 13 or 15 mph and a top speed of around 25 mph.

Though the flybridge and deck layouts remained the same over the years, the interior went through some design changes. The original floor plan cantered on a galley/dinette to port, a step down from the saloon. Beginning with 1988 models, the galley/dinette is truly down.

The later plan replaces the bench-seat dinette with a U-shaped one. In both plans, the master stateroom is forward, with an offset bunk to port and a vanity to starboard. The head compartment has a separate shower. The saloon is roomy, taking advantage of the boat’s 14-foot beam, and came equipped with a standard convertible sofa/sleeper. An inside helm station wasn’t offered.

Unfortunately my folks couldn't make the trip with my wife and I, but we had fun and caught fish! I would suggest their operation to anyone and everyone looking for a great charter fishing experience. Thanks Guys!! Especially Penny! HA!! Dixie misses you! Scott Edgar

Best Fishing Ever! Hi Rick!

Just wanted to let you know how much fun we had! Ryan and Paul and I just had a fantastic time. I know you wished for bigger and more fish‎ for us but really our experience and the fish we did catch were just awesome!! We can't wait to join you and Chris (who was also just so amazing at taking care of us) again next year. I can't wait to do it again.

Thank you so much for such a great memory!!

Life is good when you can fish all afternoon, but is even better when you do it on your boat with your first hand man taking care of everything!! So relaxing!! Beat of luck tomorrow. Cheers, Connie

Good morning Gentleman, Thanks for the awesome charter last night, the guys thought it was just unreal. We all had a great time, and wanted both of you to know that we appreciate the time and skill and hard work that you gave to make our fishing experience a blast.  We will have to this again for sure.

Again thanks and take care.

Hi Rick - just a word of thanks to you and Chris for the great morning of fishing - you make a great team - what made the day for us was that our grandson reeled in the largest fish of the day and he was pretty excited - kind of glad that the pink salmon got away - we had the coho that night for dinner and it was delicious - we have a group coming next weekend and we'll be frying up the lake trout - look forward to our next fishing experience with you - warmest regards - Dave

Give Us A Try! You Will Be Glad You Did!

We always have two Crew Members which ensures you have a Captain at the helm & a 1st Mate operating the fishing equipment & assisting you in catching fish. Both also complete additional tasks to ensure your trip is safe & enjoyable!

It is our opinion that one person cannot operate the vessel and fishing equipment at the same time. In fact it is impossible to offer clients safety and the best chance of catching fish with only one crew member.

Our methods result in improved service and safety to our clients, not to mention a better catch ratio!  This season come July we plan on adding a couple more fishing tactics in the hope of adding more Walleye to our catch! This has the possibility of being a game changer for us!

Remember, we pride ourselves at being good at what we do! We are not satisfied unless we are the best boat on the water!

Our aim is for a safe & enjoyable trip with guests fighting fish! This of course is why we insist on two crew members!

Hours include travel time to our fishing area which is usually 10 to 20 minutes. We are very lenient on this,  and you will likely be on the water for at least an extra 1/2 hour.

Please note hours begin at the scheduled departure time.

We have fished out of Kincardine since 1988 and began our Charter Service in 1998.

Your Captain has experienced British Columbia & Newfoundland Salmon Fishing and Tuna Fishing in Panama and the Dominican Republic! He has also fished off the shores of Portugal!

Funeral At Sea - Celebration of Life

A funeral at sea is a dignified, simple alternative to a conventional funeral. Scattering ashes in the sea is a time-honored tradition that is seen as more refined and less costly then funeral parlor-based services.

We will provide you with a peaceful and private means of completing this ceremony.

On your arrival you and your guests will be escorted to the vessel and be briefed on our safety procedures. Offshore, the ceremony will begin with the vessel circling left meaning "Turning Back the Hands of Time". Weather permitting the vessel will come to a full stop with engines off and your family and friends will complete your final farewells. The ashes will then begin their new journey, to be carried by the current, forever. The vessel will circle the ashes to the right meaning Time and Life Goes On completing the figure eight infinity sign. The vessel's bell will be rung eight times meaning "End of Watch" and as you hear the bell, you may toss your flowers as a gesture of "Letting Go" which ends the ceremony.

We will provide you with certificate of the exact time and coordinates of your Celebration of Life.

You may of course change this to any procedure which is best for you.

Cost: $500.00

Avoid the harmful algae in Ypsilanti's Ford Lake, health department warns

Portrait of Carol Thompson

Ypsilanti Township — The Washtenaw County Health Department is recommending people avoid swallowing water from Ford Lake or having contact with scum or green water formed there, the department announced Friday.

A harmful algae bloom has formed on Ford Lake and contains toxins that could be harmful to humans or animals, the department said. The lake is in Ypsilanti Charter Township and borders the city of Ypsilanti.

People should avoid swimming in water that has scum or mats of algae. Algae could look like spilled paint, could have colored streaks or a blue-green hue. People and pets should avoid swallowing any lake water, the department said.

Swallowing microsystin toxins could cause people to experience flu-like symptoms, gastrointestinal illness, abdominal pain, weakness, headaches, numbness or difficulty breathing. At large quantities, the toxins can harm people's liver and kidneys.

The department also recommended people be cautious when boating, water skiing or tubing in areas with visible algae scum, because breathing in water droplets with algae could cause nose or throat irritation.

There is public access to Ford Lake at Ford Lake Park on Huron River Drive in Ypsilanti Township. The park has a boat and canoe launch, fishing areas and open space along the lakeshore.

There also is private housing surrounding the lake.

"We're working with the township to basically make sure we do everything we can to notify people who have access to the lake," said Susan Ringler Cerniglia, Washtenaw County Health Department public information officer. "The township working on direct notification to residents."

Residents reported the bloom Tuesday and said it was large, visible and had an odor, Ringler Cerniglia said. The county health department tested the water the same day.

"We wanted to make sure we heightened that awareness going into the nice weekend when people might be recreating," she said.

The county health department requested signage explaining harmful algae blooms from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Ringler Cerniglia said. She said the signs should arrive next week.

They likely will remain in place at Ford Lake public access areas all the time, Ringler Cerniglia said.

The signs will contain three alert levels that department officials can use depending on the conditions at Ford Lake. Health officials could advise people of the possible presence of harmful algae, caution them to avoid scum if a bloom has been reported, or warn them to avoid the water if a bloom is active and confirmed.

Ford Lake's harmful algae bloom is caused by blue-green algae, which technically is a bacteria called cyanobacteria. The algae can create microsystin toxins.

Confirmations of harmful algae blooms are becoming more common across Michigan's inland lakes and the Great Lakes . There were 21 confirmed blooms in Michigan in 2016, 80 in 2022 and 64 in 2023, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Harmful algae blooms form when an excess of nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, are present in water. Warm, stagnant water conditions also contribute to bloom formations.

Ringler Cerniglia said the Washtenaw County Health Department doesn't know what exactly is causing the bloom in Ford Lake. She said leaking septic systems, phosphate-laden soaps or warm, stagnant conditions all could be contributing.

A bloom was reported in Ford Lake last year but dissipated before the department confirmed its presence, she said. A bloom was confirmed in September 2020.
