Marine Tech Editor Fox Morgan has created a short list of 16 of the best sailing watches on the market. There's a range to suit all budgets and sailing needs, from a basic time waterproof timekeeper to a top of the range smart watch. There something for everyone, from racing to cruising sailors.

The best sailing watches can offer a multitude of functions, from MOB alerts to tidal calculations and large faced race count down timers. And yet still there’s utter simplicity of a waterproof self winding timepiece.

Just as tablets and even smartphones have revolutionised how sailors use multifunction displays and instruments, so the latest smart watch technology has now firmly filtered into sailing. While we’re now familiar with using our watches to give us directions, make calls and send messages, and act as a repeater screen on our wrists ashore, so the latest sailing watches also make navigation, data and comms technology wearable afloat.

You’ll see that Garmin have several entries in our best sailing watches guide and if you’re specifically after a Garmin, we have rounded up the best of those in this guide to the best Garmin watch for yachting sailing and more .

However, the cleverest watch is not always the best watch for sailing. For racing an extremely simple and speedy to operate model may suit better. Price is not always an indicator of functionality either; even some of the least expensive sailing watches, like the Casio we showcase below, can be packed with features.

At the other end of the scale,  luxury horology brands – including Rolex, Panerai, and Omega among others – have long been closely associated with sailing, seeing it as the perfect sport to demonstrate their style, waterproof and ruggedised qualities, and accuracy.

In making our selection of the best sailing watches, we’ve chosen those with features specifically suitable for wearing aboard. That doesn’t mean, however, that they float, so be sure to do the clasp up securely and be wary of pulling off jacket sleeves in a hurry and losing your prized timepiece overboard!

Garmin’s latest sailing smartwatch includes improvements to strengthen integration with onboard electronics.

It’s a touchscreen model that can, for instance, be used to control MFD displays or Fusion audio systems, as well as Garmin autopilots.

You can also pay for things with contactless payments, but you’ll need to use an intermediary app, such as Curve if you are in the UK as British banks haven’t signed up for that function directly yet.

So let’s address the major change for the Quatix 7 over the Quatix 6, and that’s the display. Plenty of folks complained about the darkness or difficulty seeing the Quatix 6 screen, so they’ve addressed that with a much brighter lit up style of screen.  It is very bright even when turned to its dimmest setting. To save the battery from being drained unnecessarily at night, there’s a night time version of the watch screen where you can view it as a digital numeric mono display, on demand, otherwise the screen is completely blank. This brighter clearer display does come at a compromise of battery life or screen saver settings.

The extra screen size in the same outer bezel size though is really very nice. Maps and other tracking options can be easily seen.

High end Sapphire models add a new ultra-clear AMOLED touchscreen.

The watch can output directly to Strava and myfitnesspal along with other apps according to your preference. We like this watch very much indeed and it is currently the best smart sailing watch for all round functionality. Pricey though, but worth it.

Casio Lithium Quartz

Best value sailing watch

There’s no question that when it comes to affordable innovation, Casio is right up there.

Despite being one of the lowest-priced watches in our selection, the Casio Tide Watch Orange is a highly functional piece of kit which, in addition to all the usual time, day and auto date functions also features a tide graph and lunar phase display.

More conventional sailing watch functions include a timer, stopwatch and LED might. It is water resistant to 100m/10 bars and has a 2 year warranty, all packed into a 48mm diameter, 13 mm thick case.

An advantage for racing is that this watch is easy to read at a distance thanks to its huge 16mm digits. A bracket is supplied to fix it to a mast. It also has a sync button if you miss the start gun, and can then run a repeat sequence or race timer for handicap competitions.

This is a larger than average design, at 46 mm (1.81” in) diameter and 14mm (0.55” in) thick.

However, this watch is complex to set up, as some functions require three buttons to be pressed in sequence. There is also no ‘reset’ button for anyone who misses their start sequence timer.

This sailing watch is another specialist racing design. Race mode features include multiple start sequence options, match racing timer and the ability to sync for an early or late start.

The Clearstart RF4055 is unusual in that it has a fibreglass case, which is available in striking yellow and red as well as the more subtle black. It has a 50mm (2″) diameter face, which is larger than most watches, with a 13mm (0.5″ in) digital display, and the weight is 74gm (2.61oz), though the buttons have a lower profile than some other race watches making it neater to wear on shore.

The Instinct 2, launched in February 2022 is Garmin’s all-round watch, which they call their outdoors watch. Features that are particularly relevant to sailors include GPS positioning on charts; barometric pressure and a compass.

It has smartphone connectivity, receives emails and texts, and can control music via a phone. This watch also has an inbuilt thermometer and heart rate monitor.

The Garmin Instinct is available in no fewer than 20 different styles and colours. It’s actual diameter is 47mm (1 13/16” in) but the viewable face is 32mm (1 1/4”). The Instinct is 16mm (5/8” in) thick and weighs 53g (2 oz).

The Garmin Instinct watch is a good alternative for anyone seeking a more moderately priced alternative to the Quatix 6.

Garmin Quatix 6 Multisport Marine Smartwatch

This watch I tested comprehensively for several weeks/months – it is a very smart design, with functions for every type of pastime on the water and off it.

Garmin is well known for superior boating instruments and they have now managed to squeeze all the data of a ten-inch chartplotter into a 1.3” inch round sailing watch. Bluetooth functionality means you can connect it to a Garmin chartplotter using the free Garmin Connect app, and to other makes of plotter using the Garmin transceiver (a $150 extra).

This allows all the features of a chartplotter to be displayed on the watch, including charts and even autopilot control to allow you to change heading or follow a GPS route – provided it is also connected through the chartplotter.

The Quatix 6 also offers more typical smartwatch functions including the ability to receive email and texts, can be used to control music on board, and monitors the user’s heart-rate.

It’s simple to switch between ‘boat display’ and ‘stylish watch’ modes, as hundreds of different watch faces that can be downloaded to customise it to the wearer’s preference, including an antique style face and even a copy of Big Ben. The Quatix 6 can also be switched between analogue and digital.

It’s overall diameter is 51mm (2” in) with a 36mm (1 5/8” in) viewable face, and it is 17mm (11/16”) thick. The Quatix 6’s weight is 83g (3oz) with the plastic strap or 156g (5.5oz) with the stainless band, which is quite a bit heavier than a conventional watch.

If you want to ditch the computers and keep it simple then this is definitely worth a look.

It feels reassuringly sturdy with it’s all metal band and easy to read rating bezel.

It’s waterproof to 300m and requires no batteries as this watch self winds from the motion of your hand through every day movement.

The winder unscrews to allow time, day and date adjustment and that my friends is all there is to this gorgeous watch. At least as far as the wearer is concerned. Behind that metal back is the smooth Japanese workings of a self winding watch. When it arrived in the box the watch was still and inactive. But the moment I removed it from the box it started to self wind. With just a small amount of movement, the second hand was moving.

For sailors who want to a sleek non electric time piece and for those divers who like to go under the water as well as on it.

I love this safety yellow colourway as it really stands out and is easy to read. This might not be to everyone’s taste though which is fine because the Spinnaker Hass comes in 9 different colourways.

FAQ: What makes the best sailing watch?

The ability to read the time, countdown or data in a hurry or at an angle is key, so look out for digital readouts with large numbers – some sailing watches have the ability to switch from digital to analogue readouts – and screens that can be viewed in different qualities of daylight. Backlit functions are essential for anyone heading offshore, whether racing or cruising.

A well-fitting wristband or strap with a secure clasp is vital to keep the watch on your arm. Most sailing watches have soft rubber or synthetic wristbands, which are more durable in a marine environment, and safer than steel. Rubber straps are also lighter and easier to adjust.

If you plan to use your watch for race start timing, look for programmable start sequence options, a sync button, countdowns that switch to seconds in the final stages. A loud, clear alarm or ‘beep’ function that tells you time to the gun is particularly useful, so you can keep watching your course, trim and other boats around you during the final approach to the line rather than having to glance at your wrist.

Question and answer

I'm having trouble setting the compass. It was working ok, then I reset the red hand to noon, now compass is way off and I can't reset it. Anyway to clear and start over?

Review : Timex Yacht Racer, The Functional Fashion Watch

This is not a small watch, nor does it wear smaller than its 46mm diameter. The case thickness of 14mm could fit under the sleeve, but this isn’t the watch for that. If a sleeve is over this, it should be a light jacket or raincoat. The dial is bold and with 6 hands needs to be. None of the hands are shaped the same. The hour hand is flat, the minute hand has an arrow, the seconds hand is a straight steel piece, the chronometer hand is yellow and hollow, the regatta timer is a red arrow with a yellow insert, and the function marker is a straight red bar. There is no wonder the diameter is so big.

Equipped with Intelligent Quartz, the watch has a Perfect Date feature that is essentially a perpetual calendar. Simply push in the crown and the yellow chronometer hand moves to show on the bezel what the date is. This automatically accounts for 28, 30- and 31-day months, and accounts for leap years. The battery is lithium and is rated to last 4-6 years.

Speaking of alarms, there are plenty. There is a 5-minute, 3-minute, and 1-minute alarm. There is also an alarm signalling the last 5 seconds of the regatta timer. The watch beeps at the end of each minute using the timer as well.  One of the more unique features of the watch is the bi-directional chronometer hand. When the regatta timer is being used, the hand rotates counterclockwise. When the chronometer is engaged, the hand moves clockwise.

Lume isn’t very bright on this model, and it does not have Indiglo. I didn’t have much of an issue seeing the markers in the dark, but there are no indices for 2, 3, or 4. Stunningly, the regatta timer almost lines up with the inner markings of the dial, so the minute markers can almost substitute for indices. Unfortunately, they are not illuminated.

I have truly enjoyed this piece and look forward to wearing it more in the warmer months. It’s easy to read, easy to use, comfortable, unique… And if it breaks, I won’t flip out because of how affordable it is. This can currently be purchased on eBay for about $215 USD. If you’re looking for a watch that provides the same functionality of the Rolex Yacht-Master II, or you want a colorful piece to add to your collection, this watch checks both boxes without breaking the bank.

Timex Yacht Racer Review: Stylish Watch for Marine Sports Enthusiasts

Timex Yacht Racer is a stylish sports watch that derives its name from a mode designed for marine sports. Timex is one of the most popular watch brands and while Yacht Racer is not a smartwatch, it has some interesting and useful features.

While many people simply use their smartphones to tell the time, a good wristwatch can still be more convenient. An analogue watch can also be a fashion accessory, much more so than a smartwatch . Then there is the obvious benefit of not having to charge the watch every day. Not everyone needs a smartwatch either, and there will always be demand for premium watches.

The Timex Yacht Racer is an analogue sports watch that you can wear even if you're not a yacht racer.

Design We reviewed the yellow and black variant of the Timex Yacht Racer, which is one of the most stylish sports watches we've seen recently. People spotted it and asked us about it wherever we went. This particular variant is colourful and tends to attract attention, which might not be ideal if you prefer a subtle, professional look. This is more of an outdoors watch, but other colour choices would work for office-goers as well.

The yellow silicone band is comfortable but its ridges could begin to irritate your skin if you perspire. The watch has a metal base which makes it a tad heavy. It took us a few days to get used to its weight on our wrist, but once we did, we almost forgot that we were wearing the it. Having said that, most people are used to wearing watches of this size. Apart from the crown, this watch has three buttons which let you change modes and control the timer and chronograph.

Most of the Yacht Racer's good looks can be attributed to the dial, which looks great. The hour, minute and second hands aside, the watch has a fourth hand for the timer and chronograph. It also shows you the date if you press the crown. Timex has used colours very well on the dial to ensure that the extra hand and dials stand out. The outer edge of the bezel has the numbers 1 to 31 printed on it so that you can use the watch to check the date.The Timex Yacht Racer is water resistant up to a depth of 100 metres.

Using the watch When we first saw the Timex Yacht Racer, we wanted to wear it because of how good it looks. In our excitement we didn't check the manual, and soon realised that we would need to learn how to understand and use the watch's features. The Timex Yacht Racer has several functions that require the same three buttons to be pressed in specific sequences, so you will have to read the user guide or watch the video on Timex's website to make full use of its features. Again, this isn't atypical when talking about watches.

Let's talk about the yacht racing features of the watch. Before that some background for the uninitiated. Most races have some kind of a countdown. Car races usually have a signal system - you're only supposed to start once the light turns green. Similarly, sailing races usually have a five-minute warning signal when a flag is dropped. A whistle is blown at the one-minute mark and the race begins when a horn is sounded. As a yacht racer, you want an easy way to be able to track of all this.

We aren't yacht racers, so we couldn't test the features in an actual race, but we did the best we could. We used the timer in other situations such as when we were working out. The chronograph might not be useful to people unless they plan to use the watch for sports.

The button on the left side of the watch can be used to switch between modes. The Yacht Racer mode comprises three countdown timers - 1, 3 and 5 minutes. Once you activate this, the yellow hand moves anti-clockwise until time runs out, after which it automatically starts the chronograph. The chronograph shows you a total time interval of one hour in two cycles of 30 minutes each. These buttons are easy to access and can be easily pressed with gloves on. If you are trying to activate these features while sailing, we don't think the interface or button layout would present any problems.

The Yacht Racer has another useful feature called Perfect Date. This lets you check the current date by pressing the crown. The fourth hand of the watch then points to the current date. This is programmed at the factory and can account for leap years, shorter and longer months until 2060. The review unit we received was tuned to a different time zone and you can change the date easily using the crown.

One thing to consider is that when the battery is depleted, you'll have to take the watch to the service centre for a battery replacement. The service centre will recalibrate the Perfect Date feature so that it continues to work properly. It's always nicer if you can avoid an extra trip to the service centre but it's unlikely that the watch will run out of battery frequently, which makes the trip a rare inconvenience.

Since the Timex Yacht Racer is an analogue watch, it doesn't have common features you'd expect from the most affordable smartwatch. We're talking features such as notifications, activity tracking, among others. A smartwatch would also let you download apps for yacht racing, chronograph, etc, which gives them an advantage over a traditional watch. We aren't suggesting that these are problems with the Yacht Racer watch. But if you aren't sure whether you should buy a smartwatch or a regular watch, you might want to keep these things in mind.

Verdict The Timex Yacht Racer is a great watch even for those who aren't into that specific sport. Its relatively low price and blend of style and utility make it an appealing purchase. The fact that it's water resistant up to a depth of 100 metres adds to its appeal. It might take you a little while to figure out how to use its various features, but they're easy enough to remember once you do. The watch feels premium enough to command a price of Rs. 14,995, though you can probably pick it up online for half the price.

Yachting Timers & Watches

At worn&wound we’ve long been fascinated by watches that were designed specifically for individual sporting events. This is part of a series on these unique timepieces.

Yacht timers – also referred to as regatta timers, yachting chronographs, or sailing watches – are watches specially designed and made for the countdown to the start of a sailing race. As you can imagine, starting a race on water, with entrants powered by the wind, is not as easy as lining up on a grid, Formula 1 style, or lined up like sprinters at a track meet, waiting for the starting gun. As we just saw in the recent America’s Cup races in San Francisco, the yachts (we use the term loosely in the case of the America’s Cup boats) are already at speed as they approach the starting line. The trick for the skipper is to NOT cross the starting line before the starting gun goes off. If they do, they’re penalized quite heavily (how and how much depends on the rules in effect for the specific race).

So some sort of a count-down timer is useful to the pilot and tactician. Horns signal the start of the countdown period and a skipper can start his yacht timer by the audible signal. He then has an on board measurement of progress to the start of the race, and can sail his yacht accordingly – hopefully to reach the starting line, at speed, just as the starting gun sounds.

Over the decades there have been numerous yacht timers and specialized chronographs produced by the world’s watch companies. Perhaps the most well-known yachting timer today is the Rolex YachtMaster, but there are others, past and present. Current and recent pieces include those from Tutima, Alpina, Atlantic, Omega, Panerai, and IWC, as well as electronic offerings from TAG Heuer, Suunto, Tissot and others.

But the vintage timepieces – the regatta timers of old – are what really get our juices flowing. Sailing chronographs like the Heuer Autavia Skipper, the Regate (sold under three different brand names – Aquastar, Heuer, and Tissot), Heuer’s Yacht Timer (both wrist-mounted and stopwatch form factor), the Breitling Chronomat and SuperOcean (both in regatta timing trim), the Memosail (two are on eBay as we write this), Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer in handheld stopwatch format, and the wonderfully busy Wakmann.

Regatta timers have various ways of indicating the countdown time. There’s typically a multi-colored or numbered disc rotating beneath the dial with the colors or numerals showing through windows similar to a date disc. Five vari-colored dots – usually blue followed by red (Alpina, Regate), numerals against colored backgrounds (Memosail), or a separate chrono hand coupled with colored zones on the watch’s bezel (Tutima, Bretling, Heuer) or indicating time remaining to the start via a separate scale within the dial (Rolex).

Heuer’s Autavia Skipper was part of the legendary Autavia line in the 1970s. It featured the Autavia’s classic tonneau shaped case, a red, white, and blue countdown sub-dial at 3 o’clock, a small seconds at 10 o’clock, and date at 6. Chrono pushers were in the classic locations at 2 and 4, but the crown was positioned at 9 o’clock. The watch featured a 60 minute rotating bezel, and examples are often see with a blue dial & bezel combination.

Heuer’s Yacht Timer from the 1960s came in both a wrist-mounted version and a handheld stopwatch form factor. Color-wise, regatta timer dials are never shy, and the Heuer is no exception. This watch was basically a fifteen or thirty minute stopwatch (there were at least two versions) with a multi-colored dial formatted and printed for the countdown function.

Aquastar’s Regate, also branded and sold as Heuer, Tissot and other brands such as “Racing”  in the early 1980s, used a Lemania movement with a classic five-dot/ window format, with a tri-colored rotating disc beneath the dial. five windows for five minutes, and once the timing started the colored wheel would progressively show thru the windows, changing them one at a time from blue to red to white (or silver).

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Breitling produced watches in regatta timing trim in both the Chronomat and SuperOcean lines. The Chronomat featured a center mounted minute with a multi-colored inner chapter ring. The SuperOcean used the center-mounted totalizing hand with a multi-colored bezel. These black-cased watches featured Venus 178 or 188 movements, modified to handle the unique needs of a yachting chronograph.

Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer is another handheld stopwatch format timer. The timing function is the familiar series of five windows with a colored disc beneath, but with the letters S-T-A-R-T replacing the third color (similar to the Memosail).

The Wakmann , yet another 1970s piece, looks almost too nice to have been a working watch. To us, it looks more like a dress watch for the Yacht Club awards banquet (but then, so does the current Rolex Yachtmaster II). The timer’s motor is a Lemania Caliber 1341 automatic with hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock and running seconds at 9 o’clock. Countdown chrono minutes and seconds are indicated by center mounted hands with orange tips. The display has a lot going on, with a date window at 3 o’clock, a white stationary chapter ring with days of the month, a multi-colored chapter ring with days of the week (moveable via a secondary crown at 10 o’clock – line it up with the correct day of the week for the current month), and a third multi-colored chapter ring outside the first two, this one with 15 countdown minutes in the first quadrant and a tachymeter over the following three quadrants. We’d be concerned about reading this in the heat of racing battle. That said, we love this watch for its center minutes totalizer, its unique display of day of the week and month, and it’s cool 1970s cushion styling.

With ultra-modern quartz-based timers available (TAG Heuer produced what was effectively a dedicated smartwatch, specifically to be worn by members of the America’s Cup Team Oracle, which relayed real-time data stream of boat performance to each crew member), and the inevitably harsh conditions of sailboat racing, these wonderful vintage racers have probably seen their heyday (one can’t imagine a skipper actually wearing a Rolex Yachtmaster II in a modern race). But their unique styling, and sheer mechanical timing abilities are works of wonder in any age. We’d wear one, even if it’s only to sail our desk into next week.

Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets towards Israel today, some causing damage in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's ambulance service reported the projectiles hit several private homes and injured one person, causing alarm among community members.

Some of the residents want to leave. Others are patriots who want to stay. But it cannot continue this way. Every sound of a door shutting makes us think it's a boom. This time, it wasn't a door, but a serious boom that cost us a lot.

Hezbollah says the barrage was in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon.

Residents of one Lebanese village held a funeral today for a man they say was killed in an Israeli attack. It comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with mediators in the region to push a proposal aimed at bridging the gaps in the Gaza cease-fire talks. Egyptian officials reportedly expressed skepticism today that Hamas would in fact accept that proposal. Talks are expected to resume in Cairo tomorrow.

Health authorities in Congo say they have recorded more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week amid an urgent need for vaccines. Congo accounts for more than 90 percent of the cases reported in Africa so far this year. Last week, the WHO classified the outbreak as a global health emergency.

African officials say Western nations in Japan have pledged several hundred thousand vaccine doses, but Congo's health minister says the country alone needs some three million doses to control the outbreak.

In Italy, divers found five more bodies while searching the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday. Recovery crews unloaded body bags from a rescue vessel in Porticello. They're still searching for one final missing person. Fifteen other passengers and crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued.

Authorities say they believe the British-flagged Bayesian, seen here in file video, was struck by a tornado on the water, which is known as a water spout. But questions remain as to why the yacht sank so quickly.

Russian officials say that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow last night since Russia's invasion in 2022. Russia claims to have struck down 45 drones, including 11 over Moscow itself. There has been no independent verification of those figures.

That comes as Ukraine digs in to defend the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine from Russian advances. Its capture would be an important victory for Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its own incursion further north in Russia's Kursk region.

In Moscow today, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ukraine's military advances there undermine any chances for peace talks.

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, infrastructure and peaceful facilities?

Ukraine's military claims to have taken nearly 500 square miles in Kursk since it first entered Russian territory earlier this month.

Back here in the U.S., the economy added far fewer jobs last year and into 2024 than previously reported. In its revised data out today, the Labor Department said that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created between April of last year and this March. That's an average of 174,000 jobs per month, far fewer than the 242,000 that was initially reported. This downgrade follows a disappointing report last month and comes as the U.S. Federal Reserve considers whether to cut interest rates next month.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended slightly higher after the Fed raised hopes of an interest rate cut next month. The Dow Jones industrial average added 55 points, inching closer to the 41000-point level. The Nasdaq tacked on more than 100 points for a ninth win in 10 sessions. The S&P 500 also ended higher on the day.

And we have two passings of note.

New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Died earlier this morning. The 14-term Democrat was a fixture of his hometown of Paterson, where he had served as mayor, before running for Congress in 1996. Pascrell was a long time advocate for emergency responders and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. No cause of death has been announced, but he had been in and out of the hospital for months.

Congressman Bill Pascrell was 87 years old.

Also today, NBA Hall of Famer Al Attles has died. As one of the first Black head coaches in the league, Attles led the Golden State warriors to a championship in 1975. Attles, seen here defending a pass in 1963, was known as the Destroyer for his particularly physical style of play.

He spent six decades with the Warriors as a player, a general manager, and team ambassador. It is the longest stint by a player with the same franchise in NBA history. Al Attles was 87 years old.

Yachting colors

Unfortunately I’m not into yachting, but if I was there are quite a few different styles of yacht “timer” watch models around that might well tempt me.

The smartest of all at the moment seems to be this Timex TW2P73100 from their Intelligent Quartz® Yacht Racer PRO series and it comes in a few different colors, possibly to match the sails of your yacht? (note – I did feature this briefly in March earlier this year, but now after seeing it – I like it and the video says it all!)

This seems to have everything the yacht enthusiast would want, such as direct 5, 3 and 1 minute countdowns after which the Chronograph starts. (Note it’s a 1 hour chronograph).  The last 5 seconds of any countdown features audible alerts.  Not being a “yachty” however, I’d have to rely on others as to these functions usefulness – but Hey, they certainly look the part and are relatively inexpensive as are most of the Timex range.

Most of the data here apart from color and so on will be shared across all the models shown and I like the fact that the models are not too large – a failing of some I’m afraid, but Timex have managed a reasonable compromise of function to size.  Each model features their “perfect date” where the calendar is programmed to 2060 and is always correct and visible on selecting the appropriate pusher.  The unique bi-direction center hand provides the countdown starts, chronograph and a perfect date you’ll never have to set.  I love it when a watch model is geared specifically to a certain task and this one seems super cool.

Colourwise I probably prefer the multi-color dial version (yellow strap (as video) or the dressy version) as the dial colours seem to work very well clarity wise.

Incidentally I love the way the indicated function lights up in the video – just video license I’m afraid and this doesn’t happen in reality – but Hey you can’t have everything!

So do I need one? – not really. Am I into yachting? – nope. Should I get one? – well I time my eggs in the morning . . . . . will that do?

Any excuse – every time!

How the Q Timex Swept the Watch World Off Its Feet

We speak with Giorgio Galli, Timex Group’s Chief Design Director, about the brand’s quartz watch phenomenon — and their newest model.

Such was the choice facing the watchmakers of the 1970s. Quartz technology — the regulation of a wristwatch via quartz crystal and a battery, rather than a hand-wound or automatically wound spring, had arrived, and it wasn’t going anywhere. The future of the mechanical wristwatch looked grim, and those who weren’t prepared to hop on the technological bandwagon faced extinction. Many firms indeed went extinct.

Of course, the mechanical watch never really went away. Now, we live in a world in which hand-wound and automatic timepieces are once again appreciated, to the point where now-vintage examples of classic references can command prices in the seven or eight figures at auction . And with an incredible variety of quartz watches (and now, smartwatches) available, both the watch enthusiast and casual consumer have never been more spoiled for choice.

But back to quartz for a moment. So many adherents of mechanical watchmaking today deride the humble quartz movement. “It’s soulless,” they say. “It’s mass-produced,” they complain. But what of the technology itself? It’s worlds more accurate than its mechanical counterpart. It’s cheaper. It’s easier to service (most of the time, it’s in fact easier to simply replace a dud quartz movement.) And because it’s so affordable, you can collect quartz watches in a way that simply isn’t feasible with mechanical watches.

This is where Timex fits in. Long champions of affordable watchmaking, the American firm has been in business since 1854, first producing mechanical timepieces, and then, in the 1970s, quartz. Most of their production is still quartz-based, though they’ve been introducing more and more mechanical wristwatches lately.

Timex’s affordable wares are many a young person’s first watch. Think of the Weekender — the horological patron saint of collegiate life. These affordable quartz watches were the gateway for many people now firmly ensconced in the watch world.

But things changed further with 2019’s introduction of the wildly popular Q Timex . Based on a model dating to the 1970s and featuring a blue dial with day-date display, a colorful, Rolex-inspired 12-hour bezel and a fun, lightweight mesh bracelet, the Q was an instant smash hit, and sold out several times over. Its easily accessible battery hatch celebrated rather than derided quartz, and people loved it.

So much so, in fact, that Timex continued to riff on the design and release numerous Qs throughout 2020: the original in myriad bezel and dial colors; the 1978-inspired Falcon Eye ; and an outlier, the automatic M79 , which retained the Q’s looks but added a mechanical movement. People were hooked, it would seem, and Timex was happy to oblige its fan base.

So where does Timex go from here? Despite its forays back into mechanical watchmaking with models like the M79, fun, affordable quartz watches have clearly been embraced by the public at large, and continue to earn Timex a seat at the cultural table. The company is embracing this reality, and has continually added Q models to the collection. With a seemingly endless supply of vintage models in its archive, the American-founded horological powerhouse can afford to reissue them ad infinitum. (Or at least for now — it’ll be an interesting day indeed when the vintage well does in fact run dry.)

We had the chance to speak with Timex Group’s Chief Design Director, Giorgio Galli , once again to discuss the Q line, the new model, and what the future holds for this wildly successful model that’s popular with newbies, aficionados, and everyone in between.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Many watch companies focus their heritage releases on mechanical products. Can you explain the original inspiration to look specifically into Timex’s quartz archives?

Our recent reissues celebrate a major defining moment in Timex history — the Quartz Crisis, or better known as the “Quartz Revolution” at Timex. The 1970s brought our first range of quartz watches out of necessity, but it also changed the way we designed watches forever. That ’70s look and its appeal is just as strong today as it was more than 40 years ago. Mechanical watches and reissues are also part of our brand strategy today, and in addition to the extensive line of Q releases we have done to date. There is also the MK1 and the Marlin hand-wound and mechanicals that riff on this heritage. For now, though, we see the most strength in our Q collection reissues.

Are each of the models fairly faithful to their inspiration, or have you upgraded or improved the designs to suit the modern wearer?

We have tried to replicate the aesthetic values of the original watches as closely as possible. The case designs and measurements are per the original watches and the movements have been selected to replicate the original functions (or recreated in the case of the Q Timex Reissue Digital LCA ). However, we have upgraded the case materials to stainless steel and in the case of some functions, such as the lighting system on the LCA, we have replicated the look of the single bulb to the side of the display as used decades ago, only this time using a single LED bulb.

The first Q reissue was an instant hit, selling out multiple times. Were you at all surprised by its incredible success, or did you anticipate its resonance with the Timex audience?

At the start, we chose styles for Q reissues that we thought would resonate most with watch collectors and Timex enthusiasts, so we were not surprised at how excited they were about the first Q Timex 1979 Reissue . We also choose reissue styles where the design aesthetic and functionality have a story to be told. We lean into classic ‘70s design elements such as the band style, unique colorways on the watch face and the recent gold and rose gold colors we launched. As you know, the Q story is one of our favorites and we are glad to see it resonate so well with fans, too.

The M79 is an interesting outlier in that it’s mechanical, but seems to fit within the “Q” collection. Did you sense a hunger for a mechanical version of the Q aesthetic after the original “Pepsi” model was released?

The M79 was born out of consumer demand for great styling but with an automatic movement. The M79’s origin goes back to traditional mechanical watchmaking, while maintaining a close tie to the design language of the modern Q Timex collection, which we’ve seen much success with and (for which) demand has been high. We just recently launched an all-black M79 , which in this same vain is sleek and has been popular.

Tell me a bit about the Marmont and its gold-colored case. Were you inspired by Hollywood, given its name and opulence?

The Marmont has a very unique case design with a reverse and concave curvature on its top profile. And yes, it is Hollywood-inspired. You can think of old Hollywood — the Chateau Marmont or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — when looking at this watch. The design has that kind of flavor that takes you back to that Hollywood/movie star era. It makes you dream, and it gives you a glamorous and chic look to go along with it.

Where does this new model fit into the collection — do you imagine customers owning both the Marmont and something in steel, more for everyday wear?

The Marmont is special in its uniqueness and allure – you can tell just by the design that it is different from all other Qs before it. Some people will put it on to add glamour to their everyday look and for others, it may not be a watch for everyday use, but for special occasions. True fans will love it, appreciate its story, design, and know how to wear it.

There are now myriad iterations of the bi-color bezel Q. But are there many more available distinct quartz models within the archives to reimagine within this heritage collection? What’s the future of the Q line?

There has been a desire recently from consumers for automatic and mechanical (hand-wound) watches. The “Q,” instead, is a tribute to the quartz era and technology of Timex that deserves respect and appreciation. It is a celebration from a Timex period that was highly creative and dominant in the US market. The “Q” is becoming a permanent Timex collection, offering a category within a category, now inspired, and taken directly from the past but with an evolution for the future.

Dramatic video has captured Ukraine blowing up one of Russia’s pontoon bridges to handicap Moscow’s response to the incursion in Kursk, where Kyiv seeks to keep its foothold.

The Ukrainian military released the footage Wednesday of the pontoon bridge along the Seym River , in Kursk, being blown to bits by a hail of bombs.

“Where do Russian pontoon bridges ‘disappear’ in the Kursk region ? … Operators, together with units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, are accurately destroying them,” Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces touted in a post on Telegram.

The video goes on to show several other heavy bombardments along shorelines in the area, including strikes against a Russian munitions warehouse and electronic warfare complex.

While the location of other strikes could not be independently verified, the Kremlin has said at least three bridges in Kursk have been decimated by Kyiv in less than a week.

The destruction of the bridges greatly hinders Moscow’s supply lines and ability to deploy its troops to fight off the advancing Ukrainian army.

It also hinders civilian evacuations in the area as more than 120,000 Russians have already fled from Kursk after Kyiv troops took over dozens of towns in the region.

Moscow has also accused Ukraine of conducting the bridge attacks with US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) , with Kyiv acknowledging for the first time Wednesday that it was in fact using the American weapons inside Russia.

President Biden had previously greenlit HIMARS to be used against Russia when defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which saw some of the most intense fighting of the war in June.

The US and other allies have previously barred Ukraine from conducting long-range missile strikes with their weapons inside Russia.

Washington has yet to respond to the use of HIMARS so deep inside Russia as part of Kyiv’s incursion, by which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hopes to establish a “buffer zone.”

Putin rattled after Moscow ‘under attack from biggest ever drone strike’

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.

The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’ 

He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.

Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.

The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.

The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.

But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.

It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.

The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.
