64-Foot 'AQUON One' Catamaran Becomes First Yacht with Unlimited Range Capability

AQUON One hydrogen catamaran

The first large-scale hydrogen-powered catamaran has been commissioned.

The Swiss Sustainable Yachts AG has just sold the first unit of their AQUON One model - a 64-foot catamaran that utilizes a unique combination of solar, electric, and hydrogen power. The design was unveiled in late 2021, but has just announced its first sale.

The announcement comes shortly after Lürssen launched the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht in March.

The luxury catamaran is designed to have unlimited range thanks to its ability to generate power from three inter-connected sources.

The AQUON One carries 64 square metres (688 sq ft) of solar panels on its roof, which in turn feed electricity into the Lithium-ion batteries inside its hull structure.

From there, there are both short term and long term uses for the stored power. For short term applications, the electricity goes directly to the onboard Lithium-ion batteries. Components like the electric motors in the pontoons, the grill in the galley, or the A/C unit, can immediately access this power. For long term applications, excess solar energy is used to convert desalinated sea water into green hydrogen (H2) gas. The gas is compressed and stored in carbon tanks so it can be utilized when the boat isn't generating power from the sun. When more energy is needed, the fuel cells convert the stored hydrogen back into electricity -- creating an endless loop that ensures the boat always has power. The company claims the hydrogen system can store 100 times more energy than a modern battery system.

There is a growing trend amongst yacht builders to focus on hydrogen due to its storage capability and zero emission production. With respect to the AQUON One, excess hydrogen can be stored for months at a time -- far more than the storage capability Lithium-ion batteries -- meaning the boat always has access to power even after long stretches of inactivity like during off-season storage.

According to designer Christian Grande, “AQUON One is made for living. It is a loft at sea without compromise. We have imagined a place to enjoy the moment, to spend quiet time away from the rush and with loved ones. The design itself was inspired by silence and the elegance of a manta ray, creating a feeling of harmony and ease.”

yacht aquon one

Described as a "pocket superyacht" the AQUON One boasts more than 1,000 square feet of living space over a 9.5 m (31 ft) beam. Sustainable materials are used throughout, including bamboo and recycled leather, and its 'smart' electronics system allows the operation of things like LED lights via a mobile app. Other amenities include a smart fridge, double sink, dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer. The expansive layout also accommodates up to 8 guests in a 4-stateroom arrangement, but it can also be configured in a two or three cabin layout. Other marine manufacturers like Yamaha and Toyota are leaning heavily into hydrogen propulsion, but have not yet released a product with the circular capability of the AQUON One. Alternating between solar, electric, and hydrogen power has not yet been replicated (or at least unveiled) by any major marine company. There are currently hydrogen-powered superyachts in development from companies like Sunseeker and Feadship, but each focuses on a singular power source.

In terms of propulsion, the AQUON One uses twin electric motors, one in each pontoon, which provide power to the propeller as well as the yacht's operating systems. The company lists a top speed of 16 knots (18 mph) and a cruising speed of 8 knots (9 mph), but with sufficient sunlight the boat can operate indefinitely at 4-6 knots (4.5-7 mph) and can run for up to three days using its storage capacity of hydrogen and Lithium-ion batteries.

You can get a complete breakdown of the power system and how it's designed in the video below:

This 64-foot hydrogen electric yacht uses solar and sea water to power itself with ‘unlimited range’

Avatar for Scooter Doll

European yacht broker MYSEA has announced the beginning of sales of the AQUON One eco-catamaran – a solar electric yacht powered by the sun and hydrogen fuel cells with luxurious accommodations for eight to ten passengers without any emissions.

AQUON is a sustainability-focused yacht builder founded within Swiss Sustainable Yachts AG, based in Zurich. The company states it combines Swiss-quality engineering, Spanish naval architecture expertise, and Italian design to deliver a new breed of yachts that are connected, future-oriented, and most importantly – sustainable at sea.

The young company’s ethos begins with its first zero-emissions yacht, the solar hydrogen AQUON One. It is described by its design team on the AQUON website as follows:

A smart designer catamaran that redefines premium yachting. It offers an independent lifestyle for sustainable luxury, powered by green hydrogen and solar energy. The name AQUON symbolizes this state-of-the-art technology and references this powerful clean water luxury.

We’ve covered solar electric catamarans before, but the team at AQUON has developed a unique system aboard the vessel that can go days at sea without replenishing and may just be able to offer unlimited range without any dependency on fuel.

yacht aquon one

Solar electric hydrogen yachts could be the future at sea

With the first sales of the AQUON One, its makers look to set a new standard for eco-friendly luxury maritime vessels, and they may just do it. Unlike many of the yachts we’ve covered in the past that utilize solar panels to help power electric motors, AQUON has also added hydrogen fuel cells for additional clean power and long-term energy storage.

The yacht features 64 square-meters of photovoltaic solar panels on its roof that help charge lithium-ion batteries aboard that offer short-term electricity storage used for propulsion and onboard energy usage. Excess solar energy is then used to convert desalinated sea water into hydrogen gas. The gas is then compressed to 300 bar and stored in carbon tanks aboard.

Top comment by A Willard

This is a big boat, 19.4 meters (64ft) in length.

Having sailed cats for a number of years (but never a motor cat) I worry about the added system complexity of hydrogen generation and fuel cells. I know the issues I have faced with water makers and seaweed, I expect this system is going to need some extra special filtering.

Fuel cells convert the hydrogen back to electricity whenever energy is needed to propel two electric motors and provide additional energy to passengers aboard. The only emissions are pure water and thermal heat, which are used to provide hot water onboard and heat the cabins.

The result is a truly zero-emissions hydrogen electric yacht that can use its own terrain to create more fuel for itself, thus offering the prospect of unlimited range (while cruising at 4-6 knots with sufficient sunlight). Without replenishing, the AQUON One can still travel at sea for up to three days at a time. When the yacht is not trying to conserve as much energy at sea, it can reach a cruising speed of 8 knots (9.2 mph) and a top speed of 16 knots (18.4 mph).

So what does a sustainable yacht of this magnitude cost? MYSEA tells use the AQUON One is currently being sold for a price of 7,400,000 euros (excluding VAT). That translates to about $8.1 million. Good thing those customers will be saving by not using diesel, they may need that extra money!

You can take a virtual tour of the AQUON One on the company website and also learn more. Here’s a video detailing the upcoming solar electric hydrogen yacht as well.

Plugboats - everything electric boats and boating

New solar – hydrogen yacht runs on sunshine and water

The Aquon One is a luxury solar – hydrogen yacht completely powered by rooftop panels that generate electricity to run its twin 100kW motors and also create hydrogen for fuel cells from the water the boat sails through.

The system is similar to that of the zero emission Energy Observer research vessel which is sailing around the world on solar, wind and hydrogen power and is currently in French Guiana on its way from France to Japan.  The difference being that the Aquon is not a research ship, but the world’s first leisure catamaran powered by green (no fossil fuels involved) hydrogen.

solar - hydrogen yacht in artists conception - tree quarter view

His experience and leadership in that area helped him gather a network of global experts in a wide variety of technologies, who he put together as a ‘superteam’ of advisors to design and create this revolutionary boat. It includes specialists not only in yacht and interior design but also thermo and fluid dynamics, photovoltaics, hydrogen, fibre composites, smart home technology and  an ‘energy architect’ that helped coordinate the various disciplines.

Solar – hydrogen yacht truly zero emission

The mission of the team is ‘to pioneer sustainable yachting and true independence’ and the goal for the Aquon One was to create a yacht that succeeds in both aspects – from energy generation to construction materials, even to the recycling of waste water.

solar - hydrogen yacht schematic of how total system works

The 68 foot (19.5m) catamaran has a displacement of 30 metric tons and is powered by 2 x 100 kilowatt electric motors, one on each catamaran pontoon. Everything, including the living quarters, is ultimately powered by the 64 square meters (690 sq.ft) of solar panels on the roof. The electricity can be put to  immediate use, stored in a battery in the short term or in tanks of compressed hydrogen for the long term.

Starting at the top of the circle in this illustration, here is a quick outline of how it all works. (The video at the bottom of this article shows the energy flow in more detail and gives examples of typical use cases).

Top SOLAR ENERGY GENERATION The rooftop monocrystalline photovoltaic panels convert sunlight to electricity, with an output of more than 75 kWh/day in summertime.

⬇︎ Down the Left side of the illustration: HYDROGEN Some of this electricity can be used in electrolysis to separate desalinated sea water into oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H 2 ) gas. The H 2 is compressed to 300 bar (4,500 psi) and…

LONG-TERM H 2 STORAGE …stored in onboard tanks.

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION Hydrogen fuel cells ‘recombine’ the hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen to create electricity to drive the engines, with water (H 2 O) as the only emission.  There is also some heat generated, which is captured and used to cover onboard hot water supply and heating.

Down the Right side of the illustration ⬇︎ :

SHORT-TERM BATTERY STORAGE The electricity from the solar panels is also used to charge lithium-Ion batteries that provide short-term electricity storage for propulsion and on-board use.

PROPULSION The electric engines (one per hull) can be powered by the short term battery or by the long term storage on the hydrogen (left) side of this diagram.

This solar – hydrogen combination means the Aquon can be truly independent from other energy sources. Full speed is 16 knots, and with sufficient sunlight and a cruising speed of 8 knots the range is limitless.

Why hydrogen and a battery instead of just a battery?  The main advantage of hydrogen is that it has a much higher energy density – it packs more energy per unit of weight, and less weight is always good on a boat. Also, hydrogen can store energy over longer periods of time, even across seasons.

Sustainability of materials

Another consideration of the SSY team was the application of a holistic and circular philosophy to all elements of construction and materials. Organic materials have been used wherever possible and others have been evaluated for their renewability and recyclability with a database that tracks where everything is sourced and best practices for minimal end-of-life impact.

Dining and dining area of solar - hydrogen yacht with bamboo, cork and recycled leather

The main floor is covered by genuine leather recycled from the waste trimmings of shoe manufacturers, while natural Portuguese cork is used in wet areas like the kitchen and bathroom. The cork comes from the bark of cork trees that are peeled instead of cut down, which means the bark can regenerate within 9 years – absorbing CO2 all of that time.

A luxury smart home at sea

The Aquon is made for luxury living and has been described by its designers as “a loft at sea’ and ‘a smart home at sea’. Internet of Things (IoT) and digital systems expert Armin Leonhardt of aleon   was an integral part of the creative team that included Christian Grande of CGDW and Martin Hesselmann on the design and interior architecture front along with Tià Simó of BYD Group naval architects.

The main deck features large dining and living rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, and two outdoor terraces. The catamaran pontoons house bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and up to four guest cabins. The flybridge is a private roof terrace with bar, grill, outdoor cooking station and dining area for twelve.

solar - hydrogen yacht has this onboard smartphone app

All in all it is a remarkable feat of engineering and design, and the project and research was assisted along the way by a variety of partners including Swiss Cleantech , the Swiss Hydrogen Association (Hydropole) , Gstaad Yacht Club , Swiss OST University of Applied Sciences , ZSW Center for solar energy and hydrogen research Baden-Württemberg , maritime safety certification service DNV-GL , and CSEM , a private Swiss non-profit research and technology organization.

2 thoughts on “ New solar – hydrogen yacht runs on sunshine and water ”

This is a pretty misleading information. As if conversion of electricity from solar into hydrogen and back would be meaningful. The energy losses for doing this are so substantial that this does not make a lot of sense, even though a solar powered yacht in general can be a good thing – depending on the use profile.

Thanks for writing, Sebastian. This is an overview of the Aquon One and all of the information in this article is available on the Aquon website. You may be able to find out more specifics there of how the system works and its applicability for marine use.

Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show always promises a stellar lineup— last year had an unusually large number of wild launches—and this time around will be no exception. More than 120 superyachts, including 20-plus that measure 200 feet and above, will be on the docks at Port Hercule, with beautiful Monte Carlo in the hills above.

Among the fleet of anticipated launches is the 400-foot Kismet . Built by Lürssen and launched earlier this year, this stunner will be shown before the winter charter season, at a weekly rate of $3.25 million. The vessel is sure to stand out, thanks to the large silver jaguar sculpture fitted under its bowsprit.

Besides bling, showgoers will notice the concerted push toward sustainability this year. Rossinavi has introduced the Seawolf X , its first hybrid-electric catamaran, and Nautor Swan’s sailing maxi yacht, DreamCatcher , is also its first hybrid. Sanlorenzo is launching Almax , its first 50-meter (165-foot) vessel with hydrogen fuel cells. It was developed with Siemens Energy.

Siemens is also sponsoring the show’s Sustainability Hub, which has become a breeding ground for eco-friendly concepts and new ideas to promote a greener superyacht sector. This year’s conference will cover alternative propulsion, outlining how it will be adopted over the next five years. The show’s Yacht Design & Innovation Hub takes a less technical approach to sustainability. It’s the place where leading designers and mainstream innovators converge, presenting vessels that will shape the future of superyacht design.

Here are 11 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Lürssen ‘Kismet’

yacht aquon one

The 400-foot Kismet is the most anticipated boat on display at Monaco this year. True to form, Shahid Khan’s third Lürssen, which charters for $3.25 million per week, will be an exceptional landmark in a marina of superyachts. Alongside its Nemo lounge for viewing marine life, a Balinese-inspired spa with the first chromotherapy bathtub on a yacht, and upper-deck dining options for 24 people, the vessel has a duplex owner’s apartment with two separate marbled bathrooms, a fireplace, and gilded wall coverings. When guests have had their fill of the DJ station and Bogányi piano, the ’80s retro matrix dance floor should keep the party going.

Royal Huisman ‘Special One’

yacht aquon one

Set to make a splash is Royal Huisman’s 171-foot Special One , the largest sportfisherman in the world. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and passionate fisherman, the monster sportfish is kitted out with a fighting chair, 22 fishing rods, insulated cooler boxes, and a dedicated bait-and-tackle room. The teak foredeck can transition into a sheltered private lounge area and also converts to an outdoor cinema. Designed by Vripack, the vessel offers up proportions and seakeeping capabilities that are matched by its impressive 30-knot top speed.

Rossinavi ‘Seawolf X’

yacht aquon one

Looming large above the water, the 140-foot Seawolf X is Rossinavi’s most ambitious build to date. The hybrid-electric catamaran is the Italian shipyard’s first multihull, which can stay in electric mode during transatlantic trips for 80 percent of the time. Even more impressive is the onboard artificial intelligence system—Rossinavi AI—which analyses the operation of the vessel, predicts the needs of guests and optimizes crew service and logistics. The interior is designed by New York-based Meyer Davis, with an exterior penned by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design. Its wow features include a cockpit centered around a pool, a second hidden pool on the bow area, and an outdoor cinema.

Bilgin ‘Eternal Spark’

yacht aquon one

Eternal Spark is the first hull in Bilgin’s 163 series. In addition to six outdoor and three indoor lounge areas, the yacht can host over 100 people while at anchor from its five dedicated bar areas. Hot Lab’s use of wood inlays and embossed natural leather create a refined interior aesthetic, while the combination of a huge beach club, sauna, pool, and two cinemas—outdoor and indoor—should keep guests happy. Built with over 200 different materials, it shows how advanced the Turkish yard has become with its last few launches.

Sanlorenzo ‘Almax’

yacht aquon one

Sanlorenzo’s first fuel-cell-powered 50Steel model joins a growing list of yacht launches exploring alternative power sources. The fuel-cell technology converts biomethanol (green methanol) into enough electricity to cover the hotel load so the yacht can anchor all night without generators. Almax also has Sanlorenzo’s newly patented Hidden Engine Room (HER), located on the lower deck. This novel configuration creates enough interior volume to include a 1,615-square-foot beach club with a pool and unfolding sea terraces, while keeping the yacht below 500GT. The shipyard has confirmed the sale of four units to date.

Custom Line50

yacht aquon one

Making its global debut a Monaco, the four-decked Custom Line50 is the Italian shipyard’s new flagship model. The dedicated owner’s apartment on the upper deck includes full-height windows, a full-beam suite, and a large private terrace. The sun deck’s lounge seating, cocktail bar, uninterrupted views, and glass-edged infinity pool amplify the sense of being on a floating island. It’s an effective design that is replicated on the main aft deck. This area offers stepped access to the sea, a scenario that is reinforced by an aquamarine-and-cream interior color scheme.

Damen ‘Five Oceans’

yacht aquon one

The newest model from Damen’s Yacht Support 53 range, Five Oceans was built for Tommy Allen, an entrepreneur committed to ocean exploration and marine conservation. The vessel will be easy to spot in Monaco’s Port Hercules, thanks to its powder-blue, orange, and white hull. The custom build is Allen’s second yacht-support vessel from Damen. It has a sprawling aft deck to carry toys and tenders as well as a 15-ton deck crane for the launch and recovery of the electric boats and Triton 3300 Pro submersible. Five Oceans also carries an Icon A5 amphibious aircraft.

Tankoa ‘Diamond Binta’

yacht aquon one

Conceived as a world explorer, Tankoa’s 190-foot Diamond Binta blends a hybrid propulsion package with high-gloss finishes over a wooden interior. Penned by Francesco Paszkowski, Tankoa’s long-time design collaborator, the full custom build has an owner’s suite with a fold-out balcony, a forward helideck for shore-based excursions, a large beach club with a spa, and massage room as well as a sundeck with a gym and pool. A corridor on the lower deck connects the yacht’s five guest cabins to the beach area, passing through a viewable engine room.

Nautor Swan ‘DreamCatcher’

yacht aquon one

As Nautor Swan’s first hybrid yacht, the 88-foot DreamCatcher is described by the shipyard as a “no-compromise cruiser with a racer’s soul.” Designed for guest comfort with a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees, its exterior is penned by veteran Swan designer Germán Frers, while the light-wood interior with gray accents is done by Misa Poggi. The aft cockpit has a new coachroof design with an integrated sprayhood, bimini, and modular benches that can be used for both lounging and dining. The stern area incorporates a large beach club area and tender garage. On the foredeck is the “sunset lounge.”

Oceanco ‘H3’

yacht aquon one

Built in 2000 as 312-foot Al Mirqab for a member of the Qatari royal family, the renovated H3 emerged from Oceanco’s facilities in 2023 looking brand new, with an extra 476 gross tons of internal volume. The vessel’s 33-foot extension—to accommodate the owner’s request for an infinity pool with a convertible dance floor and waterfall—and a fully replaced superstructure were enough for Lloyd’s Register to classify the yacht as a new build. A spa on the lower deck has a hammam, a sensory shower, a hair salon, and treatment rooms. The beach club with its rippled mirror ceiling offers stepped access to the sea.

Conrad ‘Extra Time’

yacht aquon one

Extra Time , the second hull in Conrad’s C144 series, has an exterior by Reymond Langton Design and naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. The interior is by M2 Atelier. Much like its sistership Ace , Extra Time has a beach club, four guest lounge areas, a cinema, two bars and an infinity pool. Standout personal touches include an attention-grabbing King Kong  sculpture in the main salon and the main-deck owner’s suite that’s accessed via a private study with an electric piano.
