Yacht Deliveries like it's with our own boat

Our Professional Yacht Delivery services have built an excellent reputation and are recognised by many boat dealers, yacht brokers, shipyards and private owners for our excellent service, maximum safety and care for your sailing yacht during the yacht delivery.

We always organize our yacht delivery trips with a minimum of 2 qualified skippers. Depending on the size of the yacht, complexity and distance, we may provide more crew members.

  • Skipper / captain 1: Eddy Lekens, more than 30 years of sailing experience, co-owner Swan 44 S&S, in possession of General Steering Licence, VHF Licence, Marine engineer, experience with: cruisers, catamarans, cruiser-racers & racers up to 100 feet.
  • Skipper / captain 2: Kathleen Rutten, more than 30 years of sailing experience, co-owner Swan 44 S&S, Yachtman certified, experience with cruisers, cruiser-racers & racers up to 60 feet.
  • Skipper / captain 3: Glenn De Brouwer, more than 30 years of sailing experience, owner jeanneau Sun Fast 35, Yachtman certified, VHF Licence, Marine engineer, experience with cruisers, cruiser-racers & racers up to 80 feet.

Pre-Yacht Delivery

Our yacht delivery starts with a good preparation.

Before we start a yacht delivery, we check all systems on board during the last 24 hours before the start of the voyage and prepare the yacht for sailing. We also do this for shorter trips because safety and care are of very importance to us.

We make an inventory and go over our detailed checklist. We check the rigging, sails, anchor, navigation equipment, navigation charts, hydraulics, valves, steering, autopilot, keel, safety equipment, fueltanks, water, …etc.

If required, all vulnerable parts of the woodwork under deck are provided with a protective foil to prevent unintentional damage.

When a new sailboat is being delivered, we also check that the spraiders cannot damage the mainsail during longer trips.

The Pre Yacht Delivery is a time-consuming process but necessary to leave nothing to chance.

During the Yacht Delivery

Once we have started the yacht delivery of your sailboat or sailing yacht we try to cover a constant number of nautical miles per day so that we can deliver your ship within the set time.

We do a Yacht Delivery of a sailing yacht as much as possible under sail. Only when the wind disappears the engine will be used to ensure that the delivery is not delayed

During a Yacht Delivery we sail 24 hours a day. We only stop for fuel, provisions and to avoid bad weather.

Safety is our first concern and we therefore reserve the right to decide for ourselves whether or not to sail. The judgement of the skipper will never be questioned. If the skipper on watch decides that the conditions become too heavy, he or she will seek shelter in the nearest safe harbour or anchorage.

At the end of the yacht delivery we make a detailed list so that the owner has a good view on the condition of the ship and the systems on board.

We keep our client continuously informed of our progress by e-mail or text messages. For longer trips and crossings we use our satellite phone for these updates.

Yacht Delivery of new sailing yachts

Many boat dealers, yacht brokers and shipyards trust us and use our yacht delivery services. That is why we have extensive knowledge and expertise to pick up new sailing yachts for our customers.

When a new sailing yacht is delivered, we know better than anyone that in most cases adjustments are necessary after the first sailing test because something is not working optimally. That is why we advise to provide at least two days extra during the delivery to test the new yacht in waves and with sufficient wind. The first two days are crucial so then the shipyard can make the adjustments locally. After that it becomes much more difficult and you fall back to the dealer.

A good example is a sailing yacht with a new engine that needs to be checked after the first hundred hours of operation. In such cases, we arrange that the engine will be serviced during the delivery. We can also organize the contact between our customer and a good service company. As the owner, you draw up the details and make the payment, then we sail your ship to the agreed location and, if necessary, we help with the service.

Our expertise also enables us to organise the necessary safety equipment or to give advice on it. We can also, under the auspices of the owner, make the transfer and check the boat for equipment according the order specifications.

Over the years we have made deliveries of new sailboats and sailing yachts such as: Najad, Hallberg-Rassy, Nautor Swan, Baltic, Sweden Yachts, Beneteau, Jeanneau, X-Yachts, Dufour, Salona, Hanse, Farr, J-Boats, Lagoon, Contest, Grand Soleil, Italia Yachts en McConaghy.

Yacht deliveries for racing yachts

We are also frequent racing yachtsmen and that makes us experts in yacht deliveries of performance and racing yachts. The delivery of a racing yacht requires an extensive knowledge of boat handling in the harbours and locks, sailing technique and manoeuvres at sea.

A delivery of a racing yacht is always done with the cruising sails (mainsail with 3 reefs, genoa 3, 4 and storm jib).

Yacht delivery responsibility & insurance

All our professional yacht delivery activities are carried out by Eddy Lekens and Kathleen Rutten. They have an additional skipper insurance (Skipper Liability) from Pantaenius on top of your boat insurance for vessels longer than 17 meters and are insured up to 10 Mln. €.

Testimonals

What our clients say.

Best decision we made to employ Halycon, for a yacht delivery from the UK to Portugal. Couldn't fault the professionalism. Would highly recommend.

Having had Halcyon Yachts recommended to us by a friend who had used their services we engaged Halcyon Yachts to deliver our recently purchased Beneteau 331 from Bangor Marina in Northern Ireland to Falmouth Marina in Cornwall. We were very impressed with the helpful friendly service from initial contact with the office team to meeting the delivery crew upon arrival in Cornwall. By chance the Skipper selected was based not far from where we live, and we took the opportunity to meet with him prior to the voyage. Prior to the start of the voyage the Skipper made excellent decisions to find and take best advantage of a small weather window in the weather forecast. His decisions proved to be spot on. We are happy to recommend Halcyon Yachts because of their attention to detail and the fact that everything operated and worked as it should when they left Northern Ireland and everything operated and worked as it should upon handover in Cornwall.

This company offers a well-priced and truly professional service, highly recommended. They delivered our boat from Plymouth to Brightlingsea. Great skipper and crew.

Great service, great communication and video highlights of the trip.

Halcyon Yachts organised the delivery of our sailboat from the UK to France and all went very well. Very professional skippers. Highly recommend their custom delivery service.

Yacht deliveries: How to get your yacht from A to B

  • August 15, 2023

If you need help getting your boat from A to B after a purchase or for a cruise, a delivery crew might be the solution, says Ben Lowings

yacht delivery europe

Perhaps your treasured yacht is in the wrong place at the wrong time? Does it need to be somewhere else, soon? Don’t have the time, crew, or experience to remedy this yourself? Well, it might be time to look into yacht deliveries.

While it sounds simple, handing over your pride and joy to another skipper you’ve never met before can be a daunting prospect, so I’ve collated some advice on what the process would look like. We’re talking about sailing your vessel from one port to another here, as opposed to loading it on a larger vessel, for which a range of choices are available.

This article concentrates on hiring a crew to sail your yacht to its destination. While it is possible to hire private individuals (more on that later) we’ve spoken in depth to three popular UK companies you’d be likely to come across in your search.

The largest is Wirral-based Professional Yacht Deliveries Ltd. PYD – set up in 1995 – which completes 180 deliveries a year. ‘We deliver most yachts around the UK, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean,’ PYD’s snazzy website declares. Another option – also with slick homepage, social media presence and international reach but with European focus: Halcyon Yacht Delivery Ltd, established in 2010, based in Falmouth. A smaller outfit is Merseyside-based Wright Marine Ltd. They’re doing good business in the wake of the pandemic.

Other operators are out there. Amsterdam-based Sevenstar Yacht Transport’s a popular choice for transporting your yacht by ship.

Some boats and passages will need particular experience from a crew

Choosing a yacht delivery company and skipper

In general, it’ll be the company that selects a skipper, so you need to pick the company you most feel happy with. They’ll forward you, the owner, the candidate skipper’s sailing CV. Naturally, you’ll be given the right of refusal. Peter Kloezeman, PYD’s operations director, says they have 40 skippers on the books who are ‘some of the most qualified in the industry. All are RYA Yachtmaster Offshore as a minimum. Our most experienced skippers have over 400,000 miles logged.’

With PYD, your delivery crew will be allocated based on whether they have experience of your proposed trip and experience sailing your make, model and size of yacht. ‘For a transatlantic [crossing] we’d allocate a skipper with extensive ocean experience,’ says Kloezeman. ‘The skipper will usually have completed the crossing several times.’ For her owners, a yacht is often a member of the family. Handing her over can be disconcerting. It’s something the industry is keenly cognisant of.

Peter Green, managing director of Halcyon Yacht Delivery acknowledges this. ‘Having your yacht delivered and entrusting it to another skipper is clearly a big decision. It’s crucial you find a delivery company or skipper that’ll care for her as you would.’ As an owner you’ll not be alone if, when departing the marina, you waggle your loved one’s anchor and whisper a few words of endearment. But it’s best to leave the delivery crew to do their work. ‘Owners must trust the company to look after the yacht as if it were their own,’ says Kloezeman.

It’s no different with Wright Marine. Simon Pendlebury, managing director, explains: ‘We look at the vessel’s particulars. Is it a classic? Pre-1900s? Does it have any quirks?’ The job’s offered out to skippers felt best suited to the role.’

As an owner you could expect a call from Wright with the particulars of the skipper and their past work. You would then be contacted by the Wright Marine skipper, who will introduce themselves.

Solo skipper setups

But what about selecting a skipper and contacting them directly oneself? ‘It can be the cheapest option,’ says Halcyon’s Peter Green, but ‘it’s not without risk.’ A solo skipper-for-hire, he argues, won’t have backup. A shore support team is preferable, he says. ‘If the [freelancer] has to cancel the job you could be left in the lurch.’ Green recalls one yacht left in Spain.

A panicked owner had engaged a solo skipper to bring the boat from Greece to the UK. ‘For personal reasons we assume, he decided to end the journey early and tied the yacht up in a random marina in Spain. The owner was sent an email with the address of the marina and little else. We stepped in quickly and sent a team out to finish the delivery.’

You need to check crew references. ‘Always check testimonials,’ Green says. The firms’ dedicated staff have a CV bank. The list is curated. New applicants are reviewed. Resumes of sailing experience will have been updated before they are sent on to you for information. Qualifications will have to have been recorded accurately and kept valid, and RYA course certificates do expire.

The gig economy we’ve become used to is relevant here. Hiring a freelancer is akin to paying a courier or a driver for a ‘ride-sharing’ service. One unnamed ‘lone wolf’ worked UK deliveries around Caribbean seasons. He took a boat from Plymouth to the Solent, where he picked up another yacht and brought her back. ‘Two deliveries in 24 hours.’ An adventurous seadog’s boast. Fun to sail with maybe, but there’s a risk they’re a bounty hunter with less of a plan about safety.

yacht delivery europe

You’ll need to make sure paperwork, navigation and safety equipment is all in order, or ask the skipper to provide them

How to prepare your boat

You’ll be sent an extensive pre-delivery checklist. Should you plump for Halcyon, you’re likely to get a verified checklist which will also be received by the skipper who then checks this upon arriving at the boat. As an owner, you’ll need to be clear about where you’ll be if you’re not planning to be on or next to your yacht at the agreed handover time.

You’ll be expected to have settled bills at the departure berth. The same goes for bookings and customs arrangements made at the destination – although Halcyon, as with the other companies, will be able to provide as much assistance towards this as appropriate. ‘The process at PYD is the same,’ Peter Kloezeman affirms. Should you be engaging PYD, your checklist will be the starting point for PYD to ‘build an overall picture of how prepared the yacht is, depending on the intended passage.’

How to sail across the Atlantic and back

Confined to quarters during the pandemic, many sailors are itching to slip their lines and sail for the sun. Elaine…

yacht delivery europe

Dealing with orca attacks and how to navigate ‘Orca Alley’

There is a new buzzword amongst cruisers heading in and out of the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar… orcas!…

Prep for an ocean crossing differs from a Channel hop. ‘PYD can supply certain equipment if it is missing from the yacht such as EPIRBs, satellite phones and communications, and jackstays,’ explains Kloezeman. ‘Ideally you – as the owner – will arrange for the yacht to be fully equipped for the intended delivery passage.’

You’ll need to have checked – or organised someone to do so in lieu of the owner, particularly if you’re getting a new purchase delivered – the engine, generators, electrical and charging systems, and batteries. Kloezeman says they ought to have been well maintained and checked before the crew arrives. You will need to have cleaned the sails, hull and propellers. ‘If there’s an issue with the yacht when the crew arrive – such as the batteries are dead or the hull is covered with growth – this will incur delays whilst these issues are dealt with, which increases the overall costs to the client.’ If you’ve engaged Halcyon, their rules echo PYD’s. ‘Check systems work and are serviced,’ says Peter Green. ‘If it’s a new yacht to you then have a survey. It’s also best to have an engine serviced.’

Yacht deliveries insurance cover

In the UK you are legally bound to insure the vessel for the duration of the delivery for the waters to be traversed, in the appropriate coding. The skipper provides for themselves and the crew. Skipper Liability Insurance covers damage to third parties while the delivery captain is in charge. Check your skipper has it.

Prices for this product have shot up since Brexit. For UK work, it’s obtainable from Pantaenius (through its German arm). Delivery companies will check these documents and take the owner through the policy wording. Peter Kloezeman explains: ‘Liability insurance will cover the yacht for skipper/crew negligence only. The yacht needs to have its own hull policy.’

yacht delivery europe

Experienced crews can help with complexities and paperwork, such as when navigating the Panama Canal

Hull insurance is standard practice. It’s rare indeed for a yacht to put to sea without some sort of insurance policy. Peter Green explains: ‘Owners should be able to lodge an appropriate claim with a reputable insurance company if something doesn’t go to plan. If something does go wrong, then you should be able to make a claim with your insurers. All reputable skippers will have liability insurance. Make sure that your insurance coverage is suitable for the trip. Inform them that a delivery company or skipper will be taking charge.’

Simon Pendlebury puts it most succinctly. ‘Unfortunately, there is no insurance product on the market which would effectively allow the same asset to be insured twice (once for owner, once for the delivery skipper).’ Mr Pendlebury confirms all Wright Marine skippers have their own Skipper Liability insurance. ‘We ask all owners to ensure the skipper is also noted on their policy.’

The skipper must know if the vessel’s seaworthy, how much fuel, water and battery there is, and any technical issues, or temporary fixes. There’ll be phone conversations, notes taken, and usually the company, the skipper and the owner create a WhatsApp group to exchange photos. These could be anything from the thousand bits-and-bobs on a yacht. But they often feature the log impeller, notes on the chart table, and the whereabouts of the keys.

‘The collection of keys’ is top of Simon Pendlebury’s catalogue of items for your pre-delivery checklist. Alongside the delivery company documents is your vessel paperwork – registration papers, liferaft certificates, etc.

If your vessel’s been sold to you, for instance, through a brokerage, then the broker’s name and contact details must be supplied. A contract is drawn up, specifying when payments are required plus any extra advance payments such as for fuel. This, notes Pendlebury, is common when delivering diesel-thirsty motor vessels.

You’ll need to ensure passports and papers are in order. C1331 UK immigration forms and forms for departure clearing ports are vital for EU trips. Brexit has complicated things too. A skipper with good local language skills (and EU citizenship) is, if not worth their weight in gold, at least a great saving of your time.

yacht delivery europe

Skippers will have their own comprehensive lists to work through

If you have contacts made through reciprocal membership of foreign yacht clubs, for instance, they’re helpful to delivery skippers trying to source items or surmount red tape. Individual skippers’ resourcefulness comes into its own here, which Kloezeman recognises. ‘[PYD’s] skippers have a good understanding of the processes involved and are well versed in presenting and obtaining the correct paperwork when required, particularly where VAT is concerned. At PYD we also have links with several other yacht management companies who can advise further on VAT and vessel, import and export from the EU.’

Of course, the circumstances vary with vessel and voyage. For his part, Pendlebury promises Wright Marine will work with you to assist in ‘ensuring all Customs arrangements are completed on time and according to countries’ rules. A lot of owners find this as valuable as the delivery itself.’

Paperwork is irksome but necessary, for as Kloezeman notes, it sometimes isn’t practical for you to be physically present for the handover. ‘We’re happy for clients to speak to the skippers on the phone whilst they’re on board if they need to discuss anything.’ PYD’s office takes over liaison between you and the skipper once the delivery has started. ‘We will keep them updated on the delivery progress. We have a GPS tracker that we send on our deliveries.’ You can expect to receive a link that updates daily.

yacht delivery europe

Proper navigation kit on board will help the skipper do their job properly

Safety kit and spares

Your safety gear must be compliant with SOLAS V, insists Halcyon’s Peter Green. This includes an in-date liferaft, in-date flares, fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, man overboard recovery equipment, radar reflector and jackstays. ‘We always do engine checks before we leave anywhere,’ affirms Halcyon regular Mark Treacher (a prominent social media skipper with excellent YouTube videos).

If you’ve bought a second-hand yacht, everything should have been taken off the vessel after the point of sale. This underlines the necessity for delivery crews to keep tools. You will probably have tools of your own, but it might not be practicable to get them to the boat. The crew might have, for example, their own spare impeller (complete with service kit), not to mention suitable pliers for prising out defunct blades.

You can expect help if required from PYD, Wright Marine and Halcyon. Peter Green says, ‘We encourage our clients to send a full inventory list.’ Green also advises you to ‘make sure there is sufficient domestic equipment’ such as cooking pans, plates and cups.

This applies to vessels with these items in the existing inventory. In the situation where a yacht has been acquired recently from a broker, these items may be missing, in which case the skipper would normally purchase them and invoice you. The skipper could equally bring their own reserve stock and take it off the boat afterwards. Most delivery crews will only need a bare minimum of galley equipment to minimise on washing up. It follows that the skipper would not be buying a walnut chopping board and pricey Damascus steel cooking knife and then invoicing you for them!

yacht delivery europe

Navigation will be carried out by highly experienced crew

You needn’t worry about your pristine upholstery either. Crews for these three delivery firms supply their own sleeping bags. Halcyon advises using double sheets to protect soft furnishings. Peter Green’s crews are warned to be watchful for harness clips scratching saloon fittings.

Kloezeman specifies that PYD crews ‘spend at least 24 hours checking all the systems and preparing the boat for passage, even for short deliveries.’ A good chunk of this time might well be given over to a job shown on PYD’s website: enthusiastically bubble-wrapping everything in the saloon. ‘All vulnerable areas of woodwork and upholstery below decks are encased in protective cladding,’

PYD’s ops director explains, ‘to avoid any inadvertent damage while at sea in rough conditions. It’s a long and time-consuming process but very worthwhile to ensure that the joinery stays well protected during the delivery passage. Similarly, mast spreaders are normally wrapped and taped to avoid making alloy rub marks on the main sail that can frequently occur when sailing downwind for extended periods.’

yacht delivery europe

Working as delivery crew is a great way to build experience and sea miles

Become a delivery crew

On the flip side of the coin, it’s relatively easy to become a member of a yacht delivery crew, and this is a great way to build sea miles, gain experience, and sail with some highly qualified skippers.

Most yacht delivery companies will insist on delivery skippers being commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Ocean or above. Unsurprisingly, many will also be RYA Yachtmaster Instructors. If you want to be a skipper, you’ll need to be highly qualified. If you want to crew, however, it’s a great way to learn, as well as sail on passages and to destinations you may otherwise never get to visit.

First mates will be qualified skippers, though requirements for qualifications vary. Crew need to be able to competently stand a solo watch at night. This means you’ll generally have an RYA Day Skipper certificate.

Yacht delivery agencies will ask for a fee to join their list and will want to see a sailing CV. You will then be notified of opportunities as and when they come up. You may also receive discounts on further training as well as equipment.

A delivery boat will be actively sailed, but shouldn’t be pushed too hard

Will my boat be safe?

You’ll find that communication before, during and after the trip is paramount. WhatsApp, a text, a request to the destination marina over VHF radio to relay all is well to you via phone, even a check call relayed by the Coastguard – all of these may be used.

PYD claims its quotations are ‘calculated conservatively’ to give an estimated passage time. The Wirral-based market leader says allowance for weather delays and boat prep is built in. ‘Skippers will sail as much as possible but will not push the yacht unnecessarily. A delivery passage is not a race.’

PYD’s rivals in Falmouth and St. Helens would absolutely agree. ‘On arrival at the destination,’ Kloezeman says, ‘the crew will usually spend around 24 hours completing the final wash and clean down before departing.’

yacht delivery europe

If bad weather is encountered, crews will sail conservatively and not push too hard

Problems and damage

As an owner, you’d be advised not to worry unduly. Things do go wrong, but severe damage is extremely rare, and loss almost unheard of. Peter Green admits the element of risk can ‘never be fully eliminated’. A delivery company worth its salt will be striving to keep that quantity as close to zero as possible. ‘With any sailing journey,’ says Green, ‘there is of course some risk.’

Halcyon, PYD and Wright Marine skippers must report to you at the delivery’s conclusion on the condition of general maintenance items, any general wear and tear, any recommendations or improvements or any damage caused during the passage by the crew.

You can expect to be told straight away of incidents resulting in damage. Green points to Halcyon’s engineer support service, whereby crew can phone for help diagnosing and making repairs. ‘One of the most common problems we see is dirty fuel,’ he says. ‘If you’ve bought a yacht that hasn’t been used for a while, the risk of diesel bug increases. It’s often something that won’t come to light until the fuel tank’s been shaken around a bit at sea.’

A lot of Wright’s deliveries involve vessels which have recently changed hands. ‘As such,’ Pendlebury says, delicately, ‘defects may not be known.’ On one trip from Southampton to Newcastle upon Tyne, diesel bug clogged the injectors and the engine gave in just past Chichester. The boat was brought alongside under sail to Haslar marina. ‘The vessel required a complete polishing of its fuel and an overhaul of injector assembly but was able to resume the delivery a week later.’

yacht delivery europe

Deliveries continue overnight. You will get tracking updates about the boat’s whereabouts

Avoiding problems

Making your expectations clear and having your consents in writing beforehand is key when resolving issues arising from company procedures and insurance. ‘Any pre-existing damage is photographed,’ assures Pendlebury. ‘This is then chatted through with the owner, or photos are sent to them prior to departure. This helps to prevent any misunderstandings later down the line.’

Similarly – and Kloezeman and Green would undoubtedly agree – ‘If skippers feel conditions don’t permit safe passage, they’ll seek shelter. The easiest way to avoid misunderstandings is to carefully read the contract and ask questions.’ Delivery firms emphasise that the crew’s only task is moving a vessel from A to B in seamanlike fashion. ‘Owners are welcome to join a delivery,’ says Kloezeman, ‘although the delivery crew will routinely sail 24 hours a day with only brief stops as necessary for fuel, provisions or to avoid severe weather.’

Very rarely do I get to have such phenomenal experience with anyone in the boating industry… But the experience with Paul–Cross Chartering Yacht Transport was nothing short of spectacular. The timing, the care, the professionalism…. Makes me wanna buy another yacht just so I can ship it with him haha. Feel free to send people my contact info for referrals. A++++ all the way <3

The team at Cross Chartering Yacht Transport safely and efficiently moved 96′ S/Y Symmetry from St. Thomas to La Paz. This was our second voyage with Paul Haber and his group. Even our grumpy captain was happy, that rarely occurs!

Initially, I received 3 shipping quotes; Paul’s was a good amount cheaper so I was skeptical but man was the experience incredible!!! The attention to detail was beyond professional. Unlike other shipping companies that book you and then you only hear from them twice (loading day & delivery day). Paul has an entire team that was in-touch with me almost daily. He treats your boats like his own and I will never use or recommend anyone but Paul and Cross Chartering!

Yacht shipping versus yacht delivery under sail – which method really costs more and why?

Depending on the size of your yacht and the distance between ports, the difference in price between yacht delivery and yacht shipping may be smaller than you think.

A transocean passage can be a cruising delight, but it can also represent a logistical challenge. Owners who are constrained by time through work and family commitments, or who need to have their boat in a certain place at a set time, be it for a regatta or a charter, may not be able to sail their own yacht to its next destination.

Over the past ten years the business of moving yachts has seen significant developments. Several delivery companies now offer the services of qualified crew, 24-hour engineering support and satellite tracking as standard. In parallel, global yacht shipping has expanded vastly, resulting in faster deliveries and more destinations covered.

What is the difference in price between yacht delivery by sail and yacht shipping? We requested a quote to move a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44DS with a value of £250,000 from Antigua to Palma following the 2017 ARC. By ship: we were quoted £12,900 , including insurance and cradle rental. However, the shipment offered was later than the departure date we initially requested. By sail: quoted £8,500, not including fuel (estimated at £1,400), marina fees (est. £250), and return flights for three crew to UK (est. £1,800) giving a total of £11,950 .

Jeremy Wyatt, director of World Cruising Club, sees many yachts moved by both methods following events like the ARC.

“In general there are two types of cruisers, the ‘traditional’ liveaboards who will cruise the Caribbean then sail home to Europe or the US. More recently, though, we have seen more time-poor sailors, usually because they have not retired or are not able to spend extended periods sailing,” he comments.

“These are the owners who would be expected to ship back home. The convenience to them is not needing to spend six weeks preparing and sailing a boat back via the Azores and [that convenience] outweighs the cost of shipping.

“There is also the argument that shipping saves wear and tear, which is a hidden cost of sailing it back. Some boats, particularly catamarans, are also not really suited to the North Atlantic route back to Europe.”

ARC Europe: Crossing the Atlantic west to east is a very different experience

Trusted hands

Engaging a delivery company involves putting a valuable asset in the hands of a skipper and crew you have probably never met. So how do you decide if they are up to the job?

yacht delivery europe

Simon Weeks is a freelance delivery skipper, based in Hamble, UK, who sails worldwide. “As a minimum, I would always ask for a skipper’s CV, verifiable references, and some contact well in advance of the trip,” he recommends.

Pete Green, owner of Halcyon Yacht Delivery, has developed clear criteria for both skippers and crew. “We run with a minimum of three crew on short and medium trips and four crew on transocean deliveries,” he comments.

“Our minimum skipper qualification is RYA Yachtmaster Ocean with lots of previous experience. In terms of crew, on medium to long trips we insist that one of the two crew must be a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and, on shorter trips, a Yachtmaster Coastal. The third crew member must have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience.

“Anyone going on a Halcyon delivery has to supply two referees who are followed up, plus either a face to face or telephone interview during which a short theory exam is undertaken to assess the extent of the crew’s knowledge.”

It is perhaps not surprising that, in a market where margins have been squeezed in recent years, not all yacht deliveries go to plan. “There are certainly some cowboys out there,” comments Weeks. “We pick up numerous deliveries every year from owners that have been let down.”

“There was one yacht we delivered from Spain to the UK that had been left by another skipper who decided he didn’t want to finish the trip. We were given a list of defects that the previous skipper had identified.”

“We were prepared for some maintenance before setting off but were surprised to discover that the yacht was absolutely fine. It turned out the list had been created so that the skipper could justify going home early.”

How yacht delivery companies operate has also been publicly called into question on several occasions. Many operations rely on unpaid volunteer crew keen to build their experience, a practice that not everyone in the industry supports.

There have also been reports of skippers pressured to sail into unsuitable conditions. In 2012, Farnborough-based Reliance Yacht Management was successfully sued for negligence after the deaths of a delivery skipper and two crew.

The wear and tear inflicted on a yacht on a delivery passage is a major consideration. With brand new yachts, the job becomes particularly involved, explains Green.

“It’s always a challenge to deliver a brand new yacht thousands of miles in perfect condition. We spend time bubble-wrapping every inch of the interior to protect it. Also, we don’t use certain items, including the oven, and we put foil on the top of the hob to make sure it is protected.”

“On the exterior, we check all fixtures and fittings before setting off to make sure blocks are secure, winches have been tightened to the deck sufficiently, and sails have been bent on correctly. Lifejackets and harnesses stay on deck to avoid scratching the interior.”

At the other end of the scale, some yachts being delivered haven’t been sailed in years. “It can be a tricky issue,” comments Green.

“Nearly all delivery companies and skippers specify minimum levels of equipment as part of the contract, but boat condition can be more problematic. Contact will be made with the owner beforehand to establish the yacht’s age and whether there has been a recent survey, but this only gives half the picture. My checklist includes all the seacocks, the rig, engine and much more.”

Shipping routes

Shipping yachts has become an increasingly popular option for many owners in recent years. It’s an appealing prospect, largely due to the inherent predictability of an operation that relies on big ships that can handle all but the worst weather with ease.

Shipping companies increasingly charter purpose-built vessels that speed up the operation further.

“It’s possible to ship with the mast left up, the shore power connected and crane the boat straight into the water at the other end,” explains Josh Flavell, a former delivery skipper who now works for Peters & May.

The list of destinations covered has also grown. “Whilst routes used to be dictated by the traditional yachting seasons and its major events, such as the ARC, today we are delivering to some of the world’s remote cruising grounds as well. Alaska and Tahiti are two of the more far-flung places we sailed last year,” reports Sander Shuurman from Sevenstar Yacht Transport.

The Oyster Yachts team in Palma manages many yacht handovers to and from shipping companies on behalf of owners. “It’s a very popular option,” explains Mark Durham, Oyster Palma’s operations manager.

“Although the shipping fees appear higher than the professional delivery companies, higher wear and tear heading east across the Atlantic means many are choosing what is a much more predictable option.

“There are some downsides. One is [to do with] the vagaries of loading dates. It can lead to multiple rescheduling, both of the loading and offloading team’s plans, and of course the planned program after arrival.

“Although the passage time will almost always be shorter than the own-hull sailing time, the additional costs incurred at each end due to delays can add substantially to the basic charges, so they should always be budgeted for as well.”

Whilst yachts won’t incur sail or motor maintenance issues, Hamish Burgess-Simpson, project manager from Oyster, warns that shipped yachts can arrive “truly filthy”, depending on their loaded position on deck.

“The dirt washes off the topsides with a bit of effort, but it can be permanently ingrained in the canvas work,” he adds. This dirt, generated largely by the ship’s stacks, can be mostly avoided by ensuring your yacht is placed forward of the exhaust system, but it’s still advisable to stow all canvas.

The price of moving a boat, whether by ship or delivery crew, can be hard to estimate. “In recent years the bottom line for owners has become increasingly price driven, so we try to provide quotes that include all of the major expenses, including cradle hire and insurance whilst the boat is in our hands,” says Josh Flavell from Peters & May.

“Our costs vary quite significantly. If we are utilising a scheduled ‘liner’ service, then the cost can be higher as the ship sails whether it is full or not.

“However, where we are using a chartered service ship, [which accounts for] about 70 per cent of our shipping, we can often offer a much lower price.”

Despite an ever-increasing choice of routes, some destinations will always require a delivery crew, or a combination of shipping and delivery. “We recently delivered a yacht to her owner’s private island in the Western Isles,” says Pete Green of Halcyon Yacht Delivery.

Hidden costs of yacht delivery and yacht shipping

Both shipping and sailing a yacht can potentially incur hidden costs:

  • Cradle hire: yachts being shipped are secured to the deck in cradles. Whilst you may own one, it may not be suitable for shipping. If it is, there will also be an additional cost of shipping the cradle itself or storing it ashore.
  • Insurance: many shipping companies include insurance from when the yacht goes into the ship’s crane to when it comes out, but not all – check with your insurer in advance.
  • Berthing: ships are delayed sometimes, particularly due to loading and unloading.
  • Satellite communications: one owner we spoke to reported a satellite phone bill in excess of £15,000 following a transatlantic delivery. The data connection had been left open by accident by the delivery skipper. If allowing use of your own satellite communication equipment, agree terms in advance in writing.
  • Wear and tear: on long passages, particularly heading into prevailing weather systems, some wear and tear on equipment should be expected. Consider timing of cosmetic work to the yacht carefully and ensure running gear works freely before handing over to a delivery company.
  • Insurance: again, check your policy. Your insurer may specify requirements for the delivery which may go beyond the skipper’s qualifications. Crew may also need to meet certain requirements.

Yacht Delivery Rates & Costs

view from the mast

Here at  Delivery Captain , we understand that to perform a professional job, you need professional qualified people. So, same applies to yacht deliveries, you want qualified and professional crew to make it right! Yacht delivery skipper and crew must be a focus point. Never take any risk by giving out the job to anyone who does not have the necessary experience and qualification.

As a boat owner, you will find it very difficult to find the right person for the job going through the net. Too many unqualified and unprofessional people on the web, unfortunately.

References are always a good mean of understanding if the skipper/crew are qualified and reliable, but even that will not be 100% safe.

Try not to make your selection based only on employing a skipper going for a cheap rate. This may eventually result in losing your money, and probably even worse  your boat .

Therefore, you are better off dealing with a good and recognised yacht delivery  company that will take full responsibility. A good company will follow you in every step and will ensure all is done professionally. Taking care of your yacht from start to finish giving you that peace of mind you deserve.

Delivery Captain can provide such service, with over 17 years of experience in the field. Our yacht delivery team will join the vessel on a specific date agreed between Delivery Captain and the owner agent. The following few days will be dedicated to boat preparation, boat check and test, sea trial, route strategy, weather check, provisioning, fuelling, paperwork check, initial delivery plan. We estimate departure within three days, weather permitting.

Sailing Yacht blue hull

During delivery, we will provide a satellite tracking position via mail, so that you can be kept up to date with boat position at all times.

Yacht Delivery  rates  and yacht delivery  costs  are not the same thing, and they differ from each other by definition. The rates are the fixed basic fee that yacht delivery company will charge. The costs instead are many variables, depending on how much is spent along the way. When we consider costs we should look at diesel cost and quantity, onboard food, crew travel cost and so forth. It’ very difficult to provide a list of costs, however, we made a shortlist to take under account different factors:

  • How old is the boat
  • Fuel consumption
  • The distance to travel
  • The departure point
  • The destination
  • The time of the year for any route chosen
  • Off Season deliveries
  • Marinas and stops
  • Forced stops due to bad weather or repairs
  • Canal Passages

This is only a small list and very generic, a much more accurate list can be generated for each boat and any route. Yacht delivery rates and costs will always be kept to its lowest possible level. We deliver  sailing yachts , sailing catamarans and motor yachts.

Our standard rates range is between £1.99 – £2.50 GBP Sterling Pounds per NM (nautical mile).

Delivery Skippers and Crew

yacht delivery europe

What qualifications do you need to get a delivery job?

Many delivery skippers operate on a freelance basis but there are also delivery companies that coordinate deliveries and use a pool of regular skippers and crew. The arrangements concerning payment for deliveries to either skipper or crew will vary greatly from one company or delivery to the next so it is always best to ensure you are clear on what has been agreed prior to committing to anything.

The delivery of a private yacht by a paid or unpaid delivery skipper and crew is not of itself commercial use of the yacht. However, if there are paying passengers on board then the voyage is indeed classified as commercial in which case the vessel, skipper and crew will need to comply with any relevant commercial codes of practice and manning requirements relevant to the flag state under which the vessel is registered.

In the case of commercial passages under the UK codes of practice, the vessel will need to be coded and the skipper will also require a commercial endorsement on their Certificate of Competence. If the yacht is already coded and the only people on board are the delivery skipper and crew then it is likely that the voyage will still be treated as commercial.

The qualifications required to skipper a delivery will depend on where the delivery will take place and also the nature of the passage. However, the skipper will owe a duty of care to the owner of the yacht and, as such, even for non-commercial passages, as a minimum it is recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore Certificate of Competence and should also have a significant amount of experience on vessels of a similar style and size to that being delivered. For longer passages and transocean deliveries, it is strongly recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Ocean Certificate of Competence. The higher your qualification and greater your experience the more appealing you will be to a potential delivery company.

Delivery skippers and companies will often require crew. This is a great way to get some extra miles and experience under your belt. First Mates are genrally paid, but for deck crew more often than not you only expect to be reimbursed for your travel costs rather than receiving payment for the delivery. The RYA provides a range of courses across many subjects that will assist in preparing you well for a role as a delivery crew member. Experience gained on a passage is invaluable and coupled with some quality training will see you grow in confidence in your boating abilities. You can find opportunities for delivery skippers and crew here on Crewseekers in our Sailing Opportunities section.

Yacht transfer in late autumn: England (Essex Marina) to Holland (Flevo Marina Ijsselmeer) by Thomas Götzen

yacht delivery europe

But first things first: At the end of October 2020 we received a call: A German yacht buyer was about to conclude his sales negotiations with a broker at Essex Marina, near London, and was looking for an experienced escort for the passage of his Nauticat 37 to Germany. He himself and 2 acquaintances should be there. We discussed the matter and quickly agreed. Possible routes were created by Yachtskipper.de and weather planning already started when the news arrived that the customer’s crew was no longer available.

Ok, we have a network of experienced sailors and were optimistic that we could provide an experienced crew even in the late fall of time. After 2 days we could also present them: Nicholas and Michael would accompany me as skipper. We continued with the planning. The next day we received the next surprise: Our customer and new owner in Spe informed us that he, as a doctor, could no longer travel with us to England due to current corona protection regulations.

Normally, this would not be a major problem – most of our transfers take place without an owner. But taking over a yacht after purchase, including checking all the papers, inspecting all the systems, the hull, the standing and running rigging, is still something different from a cruise escort.

Together with the customer, we started planning the takeover, studied the extensive appraisal, drew up checklists, made phone calls to the broker and the old owner in England. In parallel, the notary and lawyer prepared the transfer.

All parties were willing to complete the purchase, takeover and transfer before Brexit. And so within a few days we cleared up all the problems and were ready to fly to Essex. But now the weather window had closed, and the Brexit clock kept ticking….

A hurricane off the U.S. coast had made its way to Europe. It reached Ireland as a full-blown autumn storm with gusts around 50 knots. It was followed by further lows like a string of pearls. There was a daily weather briefing by phone and after 10 endless days we finally found the gap.

On November 24, 2020 in the morning at 06:00 we stood at the airport in Düsseldorf and filled out sleepily Corona forms of the English health authority, hoping for a problem-free entry. 3 hours later it was almost done: We were standing at the baggage carousel in London-Heathrow. Around noon we arrived at the Essex Marina on the River Crouch.

Victor, the previous owner was an eighty year old Gentleman & Sailor straight out of a picture book. He gave us a warm welcome. What followed was a marathon of checklists. At some point we had lifted every bilge lid, climbed the masthead with the bosun’s chair, checked the engine, and finally put the last check in the checklist. Now the second marathon started for me – the paperwork.

I was sitting in the office of Dillen, the broker, at a large English desk with tons of papers on it. Connected by telephone: Our customer with his legal counsel.

The papers had to be examined and checked for completeness. Dillen was “not amused” by the German thoroughness. I tried to loosen him up a little. After 3 hours and dozens of photos sent, we were at the end. All in order.

Outside temperature 6° Celsius. On board, the heating was running. Nicholas and Michael had cleared up and on the stove cooked a delicious soup.

It was a long day and we wanted to leave the marina early the next morning with the water running out. A last weather check and already we were gone in the bunks.

As we started the engine and cast off, the fog hung in tatters over the Crouch River. The wind was still asleep, but the outgoing water helped us with 3 knots of current toward Whitaker Channel. The rest of the fog cleared later as well. We enjoyed the morning alone on the river, with only a seal looking after us. After one hour we already reached “Foulness Sand” the beginning of the extensive Thames River Delta – the Thames. Whitaker- & Kings Channel followed, until a few hours and after 33 miles later we were facing the first navigational highlight of our passage:

yacht delivery europe

Traffic circle

Waypoint 21 – Danger buoy Trinity – was the start into the “traffic circle” that revolves around the lightship “Sunk Centre”.

In fact, one circles there like in a traffic circle counterclockwise….

Our exit was the Safe Water Buoy “Sunk E2” on the edge of the Traffic Separation Scheme – our course 65° northeast.

With our WP (Waypoint) 28/Tonne. Sunk E we left the protective TSS (traffic separation area) and the most challenging and dangerous part of the crossing began for us. With no TSS to regulate traffic, force it into lanes, and determine direction and right-of-way, several of the busiest shipping routes in the Northern Hemisphere converge here within the next 50 nautical miles. Not an optimal location for a 37 foot yacht without active AIS.

yacht delivery europe

Marinetraffic.com – Density map display

When it got dark, the radar therefore also had to perform at its best. Constantly we had the maximum number of targets that we marked as MARPA plot to get data like CPA and TCPA even without AIS. Nikolaus stayed on watch with me and Michael had to lie down in the bunk. We were highly concentrated and tense. Now was no time for mistakes. Theoretically, the KVR (editor’s note :collision prevention rules) applied here, but we did not want to – and as it turned out later – were not allowed to count on them.

marked targets in radar

We had prepared for this part of the route. A great help to plan ahead the traffic and the courses of the routes without TSS is offered by Marinetraffic.com with its function of “density maps”. If this function is switched on, all routes appear like furrows through the North Sea. The deeper, i.e. the darker, these furrows are, the more ships sail these courses. The stretch in front of our bow was furrowed like the face of an old sea bear.

It was night, but we had calm seas and good visibility. So we meandered through the lanes of the big pots until we were eventually surrounded. We saw from port one of those thick targets in the radar bearing down on us. CPA(Re. note: Closest Point of Approach): zero. Distance one nautical mile. Standing Bearing. There was no room for us to dodge without being on a collision course with other ships ourselves. There was no time to stare at the radar signal any longer, its position lights fixed us, eyes with red and green light! Apparently the guy on the bridge deck was otherwise occupied and needed addressing. We sent an urgent message into the ether. After what felt like an eternity and anxious anticipation, the pot turned and its green position light disappeared from our view. We breathed a sigh of relief…

Hours later height WP 29 of our route and without further incident, we changed course again before the approach to the Eurogeul (Rotterdam). Still about 60sm to the approach IJ-Geul, off Ijmuiden.

yacht delivery europe

Slowly, twilight appeared on the horizon. We passed the big outer road before Ijmuiden. We have not seen so many ships at anchor here in recent years. We couldn’t tell if it was the aftermath of Corona, but it was a sad sight to see these cruise ships lying here. We passed the last roadstead before the approach, kept course to the breakwater, registered at the Ijmuiden lock, were assigned the southern lock and were allowed to enter directly. The Dutch have a heart for sailors. We were happy to have mastered this part of the transfer. I disappeared below deck for 2 hours and Nikolaus and Michael took over the watch. I closed my eyes reassured; Nikolaus knows the route and the crossing ferries.

The free watch went by in a flash and the registration at the Marina Amsterdam went off without a hitch. Our request to pay by bank transfer was granted. As dusk fell the lines on our mooring were tight.

yacht delivery europe

Amsterdam evening

The evening was not exciting – all restaurants closed due to Corona requirements. But the galley was running at full speed and we were still chatting in the salon.

The next morning welcomed us with rain. At 08:00 we threw off the lines.

The remaining distance was only 45 miles, 2 locks and 1 bridge.

We went through the center of Amsterdam towards our first lock. Past the train station with its countless docks, where the ferries buzz around the nest like bees.

We registered at the Oranjesluis and a little later we pass the gate. At the following Schellingwoudebrug (bascule bridge) we then have to wait another 10 minutes. It remains closed during rush hour.

yacht delivery europe

Lock -Amsterdam

Our last stage had begun and held another unpleasant surprise for us:  Fog rolled in!

Ahead of us lay a narrow fairway through the entire Markermeer and that in the fog…. That didn’t have to be the case. I phoned Rainer (Yachtskipper – Kontor) and consulted with him. Rainer thought it was doable, and after my crew felt the same way, we continued on. Even at the end of November here is busy by inland shipping and so we went three fog watch. One at the helm, one at the lookout and one at the radar. The reported all targets with distance up to the bridge. The lookout tried to spot them early enough and the helmsman kept the course at the edge of the fairway, always ready to swerve! The visibility was 400 meters. We had a proven, good radar and through mobile reception also additional view of all AIS targets around us.

yacht delivery europe

Fog visibility about 400m

After 4 hours of concentrated fog sailing we reached Lelystad and the lock to the Ijsselmeer.

We were allowed to drive right in. Due to the fog we had our plan, still on the way clear to make, and so we now moored at the Wartetsteg after the lock and clean the complete yacht. It looked more well-maintained than when we took possession of it. Everything was shining, the duffel bags were already on the upper deck.

One more mile to the marina. The fog had lifted and we moored the yacht in front of the main building. 20 minutes later, the owner also appeared – what timing! Together we brought the Nauticat to her final berth and said goodbye after a detailed handover. The owner was visibly satisfied and we were also happy about the almost perfect cruise.

Thank you for the order!

The captain of the Bayesian has insisted that he did everything possible to save those on board the superyacht , according to local reports.

Sources close to James Cutfield, 51, told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that the 51-year-old New Zealander is currently living through the darkest days of his life as he is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges.

They reportedly said Mr Cutfield repeatedly insists that he did not abandon any of the 22 passengers and crew and that he did everything could could to save them.

However, there reached a point when he could do little as the vessel had taken on too much water, they added.

Since Wednesday, Tim Parker Eaton, the engineer who was in charge of securing the yacht’s engine room, and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster, are also under investigation for the same possible charges , their lawyer said on Friday.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who were killed after his superyacht capsized and went down on 19 August within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm off the coast of Sicily .

Full story: Two more crew members under investigation over sinking of superyacht Bayesian

Two more crew members from the Bayesian are under investigation for manslaughter after seven people were killed when the superyacht sank in a storm off Sicily last week.

A judicial source said on Wednesday that Italian prosecutors are probing two more crew members in connection with the vessel’s sinking , along with its captain, after the British-flagged Bayesian capsized on 19 August while anchored off northern Sicily.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his 19-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch, and five other people died when his 56-metre-long (184-foot) yacht went down within minutes of being hit by the pre-dawn tornado near the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

Two more crew members under investigation over sinking of superyacht Bayesian

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and daughter among seven killed when vessel capsized in storm off Sicily

Sinking of ‘unsinkable’ Bayesian puzzles experts

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini and deemed “unsinkable”, should have withstood the storm – and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did. Meanwhile, a nearby sailing boat remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” – a localised, powerful wind, which descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.

They added that their investigation would take time and would require the wreck of the Bayesian – which is lying on its right side, at a depth of around 50 metres (164 feet) – to be salvaged from the sea.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who is heading the investigation, has said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.

Who was on the Bayesian?

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the people initially unaccounted for after his superyacht Bayesian sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Saturday morning, Italian authorities announced a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the deaths of seven people, after a five-day operation that has seen divers carefully navigating their way into the cabin bedrooms.

After a decade-long legal battle which had seen him extradited to the US to face an $11bn fraud case, Mr Lynch had celebrated by inviting his close friends, colleagues and those who helped him on his legal team aboard his boat as a gesture of gratitude.

My colleague Rachel Hagan outlines what we know about the 22 people on board:

It was supposed to be a summer celebration.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch had gathered his tried and trusted lawyers who had been with him every step of the way helping him emerge unscathed from a gruelling 13-year legal battle. Twelve guests had flown into the picturesque Italian port of Porticello, near Palermo from the UK, the US, Canada , New Zealand and Ireland, to mark the end of the fraud trial that had consumed much of their lives.

But now a manslaughter investigation has been launched as Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who died after the vessel capsized during bad weather in the early hours of Monday morning.

My colleagues Barney Davis and Jabed Ahmed report:

Captain of Mike Lynch's yacht leaves Sicily on private jet

The captain of Mike Lynch's yacht flew out of Palermo on Thursday, 10 days after the British tech tycoon and six other people were killed when the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily.

James Cutfield left the Sicilian capital on a private jet, an investigative source said, adding the destination of the flight was unknown. Cutfield, a New Zealander, lives with his wife in Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Cutfield was put under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck earlier this week and declined to answer questions from prosecutors on Tuesday.

Two other crew members were placed under investigation on Wednesday. Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

Those facing investigation have no obligation to stay in Italy but have to nominate lawyers so that the authorities have a way of remaining in contact with them.

Final moments of seven who died in Bayesian tragedy revealed by fire service boss

Former captain of bayesian offers insights into yacht’s sinking.

The swift descent of the Bayesian underwater has puzzled seafarers and nautical engineers, who say the vessel should have taken hours to fill up with enough water to sink it.

There have been suggestions that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been left open, or were broken or smashed by the storm, letting in water.

The yacht was capable of tilting to around 75-90 degrees, depending on whether its keel was up or down, and still revert to upright position, former captain Stephen Edwards wrote on his Linkedin profile.

He said the “Downflooding Angle”, at which water could start entering the vessel via the engine room or ventilation ducts, was 40-45 degrees, and once surpassed, would have put the yacht “in serious trouble”.

Experts have questioned if the yacht had been moored with its keel up, potentially compromising its stability, but Edwards said that under the boat’s operating rules, the keel was not required to be down while at anchor.

The keel is a fin-like stabilising structure under the hull, which can be lifted to reduce the depth of the boat in shallow waters or harbours. In the Bayesian, it could reduce the yacht’s below-water surface from around 10 to 4 metres.

Prosecutors investigating crew members ‘in a very general way’, lawyer says

The lawyer for two Bayesian crew members under investigation has said that, similarly to the ship’s captain, his clients were under investigation on charges of manslaughter and causing a shipwreck – which does not imply guilt and will not necessarily lead to charges.

Lawyer Marco Scopesi told the New York Times that his clients were under investigation “in a very general way”, adding: “The prosecution hasn’t focused on anything specifically.”

“We’re still at the beginning” of the investigation, he told the outlet.

Captain of nearby boat says he turned on engine to avoid collision with Bayesian in storm

The captain of a nearby boat has recalled that, when the winds surged, he had turned on the engine to keep control of his vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian , which had been anchored alongside him.

“We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” Karsten Borner said.

The other boat “went flat on the water, and then down,” he added. He said his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.

Bayesian 'was one of the safest boats in the world’

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Perini Navi, an Italian luxury yacht maker. It featured the world’s tallest aluminium mast, measuring 72 metres (236 feet).

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of the Italian Sea Group – which owns Perini – said the yacht was “one of the safest boats in the world” and basically unsinkable.

PALERMO, Italy (Reuters) -Italian prosecutors are investigating two more crew members from British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's yacht, along with its captain, in connection with the vessel's sinking over a week ago, a judicial source said on Wednesday.

Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

Lynch and six other people were killed when the British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-foot) yacht, capsized and went down on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

On Monday, the boat's 51-year-old captain James Cutfield, a New Zealander, was put under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck. Cutfield declined to respond to prosecutors during questioning on Tuesday.

Ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith are being investigated over the same crimes, the source said, adding that Parker Eaton is suspected of having failed to protect the yacht's engine room and operating systems.

Griffith was on watch duty on the night of the incident, the source said. He flew out of Palermo late on Wednesday, with the source saying he was heading for the French city of Nice.

Those under investigation have no obligation to stay in Italy but have to nominate lawyers so that the authorities have a way of remaining in contact with them.

Four other crew members, who have not been placed under investigation, left Palermo, with two of them heading for Dubai and the other two travelling to Istanbul.

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have said their investigation would take time, and would require the wreck to be salvaged from the sea. The Bayesian is lying on its right side, at a depth of around 50 metres (164 feet).

Crew member on tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s stricken yacht tells of being thrown into water

yacht delivery europe

ROME - A crew member on Mike Lynch's yacht has spoken of being thrown into the water and efforts to rescue passengers as a storm sank the vessel off Sicily in August, in a disaster that killed the British tech tycoon and six other people.

Mr Matthew Griffiths, who was on watch duty on the night of the tragedy, told investigators that the crew members did everything they could to save those on board the Bayesian, according to comments reported by Italian news agency Ansa.

Mr Griffiths, the boat's captain James Cutfield, and ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton have been placed under investigation by the Italian authorities for potential manslaughter and shipwreck.

Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.

"I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots (37kmh). He gave orders to wake everyone else," Ansa quoted Mr Griffiths as saying.

"The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could," he added, describing the events of the early hours of Aug 19, when the Bayesian had been anchored off the Sicilian port of Porticello.

"We were walking on the walls (of the boat). We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother," he said, referring to passenger Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.

In all, there were 15 survivors of the wreck.

Mr Cutfield exercised his right to remain silent when questioned by prosecutors on Aug 27, his lawyers said, saying he was "worn out" and that they needed more time to build a defence case.

Engineer Mr Parker Eaton has not commented on the investigation.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said last week that the vessel was most likely hit by a "downburst", a very strong downward wind.

However, the sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have said their investigation will take time, with the wreck yet to be salvaged from the sea. REUTERS
