Athletic fields are open 2024      Field Schedule

The city of Marquette operates multiple athletic fields across the city. Kaufman sports complex, constructed in 1996, is home to three regular-sized soccer fields, four softball fields, spectator seating, a BMX track and a pavilion with restrooms and picnic area. Many area youth sports clubs and adult sports clubs utilize these fields. Reynolds Athletic Field complex located off Presque Isle and Wright St, contains regulation baseball diamonds and a junior baseball diamond. Two basketball courts are located on the south end of the site and a lighted, outdoor ice rink completes this multi-season field. Hurley Field, located in South Marquette, has a regulation fast-pitch softball field, with a lighted scoreboard, playground equipment and concession facilities. Fields are available for rent through the Parks and Recreation Office.

Other recreational facilities that are operated by this department include several community parks, City multi-use pathway, tennis and basketball courts.

Fit Strip Screen shot

The City of Marquette Fit Strip, located immediately adjacent to Park Cemetery, provides year-round fitness opportunities. With public parking along the 800 block of West Ridge Street, the location offers easy, convenient access for in-town trail enthusiasts. The outer loop undulates for runners, walkers, bikers or fitness-seekers of all ages. Multiple fitness stations dot the trail for public use. Variations to the trail offer opportunities for longer or shorter workouts. In snowy months, Noquemanon Trail Network volunteers groom the trail for cross country skiing: skate ski and classic. Trails are also used for snowshoeing. Through partnership with the Board of Light and Power, the Fit Strip is illuminated from sunset to 11pm and from 5am to sunrise daily for the 2023-2024 winter season. Because the Fit Strip is part of Park Cemetery, dogs are not allowed at the Fit Strip .

Skate Plaza

Located at the corner of Pine and E Fair Avenues, the City of Marquette Skate Plaza was completed in 2012. The park is continually updated. Skaters are required to observe the following rules and guidelines when using the Skate Plaza:

Use at your own risk. Proper safety equipment is highly recommended. No littering…this is your park. Keep it clean. No personal ramps allowed in park. Spectators must stay off skating surface and ramps No foul language or loud music. No alcohol or tobacco products allowed. Failure to follow posted guidelines will result in loss of privilege to use ramp.

Pier two with sun shade altered 8.15.24

Completed in 2023, the Founders Piers create additional public access to beautiful Lake Superior.  The six-million-dollar project utilized funds from the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to offer accessible kayak launch, sunshades, day-use boat parking and copious space for experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of the Lake.

The two piers are part of an effort to reuse old wooden pilings remaining from the area’s industrial heritage.  Learn more.

Founders Piers are open during City park summer hours 7am-11pm.  May through October.  The piers are open during winter park hours 8am-8pm at your own risk; the piers do not have snow removal during the winter season.

Click here for event information at Founders Piers.

Tourist Park

The City-owned and operated Tourist Park is located approximately 1/2 mile north of Wright Street on Sugar Loaf Avenue on the north edge of the City. Fronting the Dead River, the nicely-wooded, 40-acre park provides visitors with a clean, pleasant and convenient place to camp in the immediate Marquette area. There are approximately 20 acres of campground space with 110 camping sites. One hundred sites provide electrical hookups to accommodate RVs and trailers; the remainder are designed for primitive-style tenting. Each camping site has a picnic table and barbecue pits are available throughout the campground.

Presque Isle

As Marquette's recreational crown jewel, special attention is given here to Presque Isle Park. The popular regional facility is located on Presque Isle ("almost" an island), a 323-acre, forested, oval-shaped, headland/peninsula which juts into Lake Superior in the northern tip of the City. Presque Isle is known throughout the United States for its natural beauty.

Several park facilities are available for rental. We require reservations be made at least 8 days in advance.

To reserve one of the City's rental facilities please contact the Community Services Parks & Recreation office during business hours. Contact information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Santa Monica's Famous Pier Sign

May 9, 2019 3:22 PM by Miranda Iglesias

yacht harbor sport and recreation center

The   History Spotlight  focuses on the landmarks, residents   and   stories that have shaped Santa Monica into what it is today. Content is being produced in partnership with the Santa Monica Pier ,   Santa Monica Landmarks Commission ,  Santa Monica History Museum   and the   Santa Monica Daily Press .

The article below  originally appeared in the Santa Monica Daily Press   on May 4, 2019.

Author: Jim Harris, Santa Monica Pier Corporation

Excerpt from  Santa Monica Pier: A Century on the Last Great Pleasure Pier  by James Harris   (Angel City Press, 2009)

There was once a time when visitors to the Santa Monica Pier would either walk or drive down the hill from the corner of Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue and then walk or drive up onto the Pier. That’s right, UP! That all changed in the late 1930’s, and the result of that change left the world with one of southern California’s most immediately recognizable and iconic landmark signs.

In 1939, work began on the  Colorado Grade Separation Project , a complex highway project that was designed to improve access between the Pacific Coast Highway and city streets. The location of the project eliminated the traditional access to the pier, so planners designed a ramp at the end of Colorado Avenue to allow traffic to overpass the new access ways and travel directly onto the pier’s deck.

Ground broke for the new pier ramp on September 19, 1939, closing the entrance to the Municipal Pier and tearing up part of the pier’s east end. The City, recognizing that business would be severely hampered by the project, reduced rentals for businesses on the pier by five percent. Construction took five months and the ramp was opened for use on June 12, 1940.

The new access ramp was not clearly visible, nor was it obvious that it was indeed the correct route to the pier. This was of great concern to the businesses on the pier. With the money saved from the rent reduction during construction, the Santa Monica Pier Business Men’s Association committed two thousand dollars to hire the Pan-Pacific Neon Sign Company to design and construct a neon sign and mount it at the top of the bridge. The new sign was unveiled on June 17, 1941.

The sign’s text reads “Santa Monica Yacht Harbor – Sport Fishing – Boating – Cafes”, which may confuse the unknowing visitor today. However, when the sign was originally installed the Santa Monica Pier was indeed home to a fully functional and popular yacht harbor which provided moorings for, among others, internationally famous actor Charlie Chaplin.

The arched blue sign — twenty feet at its highest point, twelve feet at its lowest and supported by columns on each side of the ramp — has since become an internationally recognized landmark. In 1996 the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation declared the iconic sign a historic landmark. The official record notes its dual historical significance as: 1) a classic example of signage from the neon era, and 2) the designated marker for the last existing pleasure pier in an area in which they were once bountiful.
