How do I buy a yacht?

Speak to your Y.CO Broker who will advise on pricing, offering market comparisons and analysis reports. They will also arrange sea trials and inspections, supported by Y.CO's technical team. Your Y.CO Broker will collect documents and collaborate with all parties for agreement completion.

Can I View the Yacht Before I Purchase?

Yes - in fact it is highly recommended to view as many yachts as possible during the purchase process. Your Y.CO Broker will assist in creating a shortist of yachts, organise private visits, accompany you on board and will help you ask the right questions.

What Happens after Offer Acceptance?

After acceptance of the offer, a sea trial and haul out will be arranged on your behalf. This allows your Y.CO broker, our technical experts and an independent yacht surveyor to verify that all the systems on board the vessel perform as specified.

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew. 

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

8 firefighters hurt, 2 critically, in fire truck rollover crash while returning from California wildfire

Eight firefighters were hurt -- including two critically -- when the fire truck they were in rolled over while returning from a 12-hour shift battling the Airport Fire wildfire, one of several large blazes raging in Southern California, officials said. The truck crashed on State Route 241 in Irvine just before 7 p.m. Thursday, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said. The California Highway Patrol told ABC Los Angeles station KABC that a car in front of the truck swerved to avoid hitting a ladder that was in one of the lanes, causing the fire truck to swerve, lose control and overturn after hitting the guard rail.

New York state reports 1st human case of EEE in nearly a decade

New York state reported its first case of eastern equine encephalitis in nearly a decade on Friday. The rare mosquito-borne virus was detected in Ulster County, the New York State Department of Health said. The Ulster County Department of Health is currently investigating the case, which marks the first case of EEE confirmed in New York state since 2015, health officials said.

Travis King, Army soldier who ran into North Korea, pleads guilty

Travis King, the U.S. Army private who ran across the border from South Korea to North Korea last year, pleaded guilty on Friday at a general court-martial hearing in Fort Bliss, Texas. As part of a plea deal, King pleaded guilty to five charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) including desertion, and the presiding judge agreed to the government's request to dismiss the remaining nine charges. According to the news outlet Status, the relationship was allegedly with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent candidate who suspended his campaign last month and endorsed former President Donald Trump. In its statement, New York Magazine did not name Kennedy, and a spokeswoman for the outlet did not respond to an ABC News request to confirm that he is in fact the subject in question.

I work as a private chef on board a luxury yacht in the British Virgin Islands. Here's what I make for my guests in a day.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Hannah Staddon, a 31-year-old private chef who works onboard the Mucho Gusto , a luxury charter in the British Virgin Islands. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I've been in the industry for around 13 years. I started as a yacht stewardess in the Mediterranean. I worked as a stew for about three years before gravitating toward the kitchen.

At one point, a chef I was working with didn't enjoy baking — but I was pretty good at it. That jumpstarted my interest in cooking, and I saved up through another season to put myself through chef's school back in South Africa, where I'm from.

I worked as a crew chef for a 160-foot yacht for a bit, but I realized I didn't even really like crew cooking because they just made food in big batches.

I cooked for 10 to 14 people daily for about four or five months. But I was getting burned out, and I wanted to be creative and make small, beautiful things.

So, my partner and I started looking for a boat together, and we ended up working together on board Mucho Gusto.

It's been seven years, and we haven't looked back.

My day in a nutshell

I get up at about 6 a.m. As soon as I wake up, I start prepping pastries, laying out the tables, and getting our guests coffee.

I usually make a continental spread for breakfast with homemade granola yogurt, fruit plates, and pastries. Then, I'll have a hot option for the day, like eggs benedict or waffles.

I like cooking light and healthy food. So I do spreads, sometimes with homemade focaccia, and then a protein, depending on the guests' preferences.

I also try to source most of my produce from local farmers and fishermen.

Lunches vary between plated salads and buffet-style courses. I whip up homemade ice cream, so there's always a selection available for dessert at lunch.

I start prepping dinner at about 5 p.m. and usually serve it at around 7 p.m.

Depending on how active the guests have been, I may serve a little snack plate before dinner, like some fresh fruits or a charcuterie board.

By about 7 p.m., once all the guests have showered and are ready for dinner, I'll have set the table. Dominic, meanwhile, serves sundown cocktails.

Unless guests request a lighter meal, we usually do three courses — starters, mains, and desserts. I've gotten good reviews for my sushi spreads, in particular.

My homemade pasta is also generally a winner.

Sometimes, I make black pepper and truffle pasta with sauteed mushrooms and a big wagyu steak. People go nuts for that, so I must be doing something right.

We have an age limit of 12 on board the yacht. But at that age, many kids still have a limited palate, so food looks like chicken nuggets and chips or pizza all week. They generally only eat maybe two or three different meals.

Generally, mums communicate their preferences to me. So, I ensure that chicken nuggets and chips are stocked on board and heat them 20 minutes before meals.

After dessert, we clean up, stack the dishwasher, and prep for the next day. If I need to make focaccia dough or I'm doing cinnamon buns the next morning, I've got to make all the dough that evening.

After that, I can typically go to bed, which could be any time between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Better than other restaurant jobs

Something I've enjoyed about the job is that I get to be a lot more involved with what's happening outside the kitchen,

If you're confined to working in a kitchen all day, you can feel detached from what happens outside it. And in a restaurant kitchen, you're often making the meal you've been told to make, as opposed to getting to be creative.

That's different on a yacht. I get to understand the guests and build relationships with them. And that's my favorite part of the job.

A luxury yacht carrying a massive amount of ammunition and fireworks caught fire on September 18, 2024, night while docked at a harbour in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of a fire aboard the Admiral, a 31-meter yacht, around 8:30 p.m.

The firefighters were able to control the fire above, but the yacht continued to burn below deck, causing the yacht to list and eventually sink at the pier at about 11:33 p.m.

According to officials, the yacht contained around 1,000 rounds of live ammunition and fireworks, which burned during the incident. No injuries were reported, and the two people on board escaped unharmed.

The vessel leaked red-dye diesel into the water as it sank, releasing an estimated 4,000 gallons, according to the United States Coast Guard.

Booms were used to contain the spill, and an environmental management team has been monitoring the cleanup process.

Clean Harbors and Patriot Environmental Services are handling the pollution management operations with support from local authorities, including the county sheriff’s office and the state office of Fish and Wildlife.

On September 19, 2024 morning, the Broward Marine yacht constructed in 1986 was burned and partially sunk.

Witnesses described flames rising 20 to 30 feet off the vessel, along with the sound of ammunition being discharged from the burning vessel.

The incident’s video footage shows the Admiral engulfed in huge flames of fire.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, and one person had minor injuries that were treated on the site and did not require further medical attention.

Authorities are investigating the full extent of the environmental damage caused by the spill.

Luxury yacht sinks after fire; explosions heard on video

LOS ANGELES ( KABC ) — A high-end yacht docked at Marina del Rey sank after catching on fire Wednesday night.

The fire in Basin A was first reported around 8:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters responded and poured water on the 100-foot vessel from the dock at the end of Bora Bora Way.

Witness video captured the sounds of several explosions as firefighters battled the flames.

But the interior flames appeared to resist the water hoses and the boat continued sustaining damage. It quickly began taking on water from the hoses as the flames, possibly fueled by a gas source, continued to burn.

The yacht began listing, and by around 10:30 p.m. firefighters were ordered to evacuate the dock. The boat began slowly overturning onto its side and sinking into the water.

There were no major injuries reported. Two people on board exited safely, though one reported a minor cut to the arm.

There was no word on how the fire started. Authorities said it’s possible ammunition was on board the vessel.

The boat is named The Admiral, but the identity of the owner was not immediately available.

Crime and public safety | 100-foot luxury yacht sinks in marina del rey after fireworks explosion and fire.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:33 p.m. and firefighters responded to 211 Basin A to douse the flames on the approximately 100-foot boat, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

Multiple explosions resonated throughout the harbor as The Admiral was consumed by flames.

Footage at the scene from CBS 2 showed the boat listing to one side before sinking in the harbor.

Two people on board escaped the flames unharmed, the fire department reported. ABC 7 reported one person suffered a cut on the arm.

KTLA reported that the fire stemmed from fireworks exploding on the vessel, threatening other boats nearby and several structures.

An investigation into the fire was underway.
