Pybus Point Lodge is proud to announce the official launching of two brand new, catamaran style, fishing and touring boats from ACI Boats. This is the second time we’ve had the pleasure of working with ACI and once again, they exceeded our expectations. Since we run a premium fishing and adventure lodge, we don’t just have to worry about our boats being safe and functional–we also have to make sure that our boats have the style and comfort that our guests expect.

ACI Boats is thrilled to announce the official award of a $3 million dollar contract with American Samoa’s Departmant of Commerce for four “Super Alia” commercial fishing vessels. All four boats will be manufactured at ACI Boats’ facility in Port Townsend, WA. The vessels themselves will be 38’x14’ semi-displacement catamarans, designed by ACI Boats and Coastwise Marine Design. The first of the four vessels, to be completed in Fall/Winter 2022, will be used as a training platform for boat owners, captains, and deckhands. The following three boats, will be completed over the course of 18 months and will then be available for lease by the American Samoa Dept. of Commerce, intended to support the growth and safety of the local fishing fleet.

ACI Boats launches it’s first CatLander in it’s line of CatLander landing crafts. Built for the Jamestown Sklallam tribe in Washington State, the CatLander7500 will be used as a spill response support vessel by the tribe.

IFC is Insetta Boatwork's Internal Foiling System.

You can expect a significant increase in cruise speed; Improved handling and stability in rough conditions; Better acceleration; A boat that is less affected by increased payload; A 20-40% increase in fuel efficiency; and a 20-40% further cruise range! Additionally, the IFC technology will also provide a drier ride in choppy conditions and Provide for more responsiveness when turning at speed!

The system is a fixed setup, there is nothing to operate and there are zero moving parts.

The IFC Technology in effect smooths out rough seas by allowing the boat to run from wave crest to wave crest at a relatively smooth and stable attitude. The IFC System creates lift which help to in effect “Carry” the hull higher in the water. The system acts as a set of wings carrying the boat at speed, keeping the hull from having to follow each wave across its entire contour. In other words the surface of the waves have less effect on the hull as the IFC system is lifting the boat. Additionally, the aerodynamic lift created by the catamaran hulls creates even more lift at the bow of the boat, keeping the nose high and preventing the “slamming” or sneezing found in other catamaran hulls.

No, you don’t. The foils are flush mounted to the bottom of the keels of each sponson (as well as up in the tunnel.) At its centerline the main foil of the IFC system is only slightly lower than the keel line. The boat will easily load onto a standard catamaran trailer. There is no big contraption hanging way down under the boat.

Remember, the foils are INTERNAL to the tunnel. At its lowest point the main foil is only slightly lower than the hull and is higher than the props. Because of this the odds of striking the foils are extremely low. The boat is designed to be lifted by the foil. The structural integrity of the foil system is such that the weight of the boat could be supported many times over by the foil. As such, if you did somehow manage to strike the foil on something EXTREMELY SUBSTANTIAL, like a stone shoal, the likely outcome is that you may (in a very worst case scenario) bend or break a foil wing. If that were to happen, you could still operate the boat to port with the remaining foils. The IFC foils are made from a very high-grade stainless steel and designed to meet or exceed relevant guidelines for impact and strength.

As water travels through the tunnel and around the foil, a tremendous vortex is created. This force keeps most debris from being trapped in the tunnel or around the foil. Between the pressure of the air moving through the tunnel, and the vortex created in the water, the tunnel and foils will stay clean and clear.

The outboards of the 35 IFC are mounted on a slight outward angle to place the propellers properly to maximize the thrust and flow efficiency created as the water travels through the tunnel and around the foils. This mounting also helps the boat to lean into a corner, much like a monohull.

Firstly, we’d ask, “Why would you want to?” But the short answer is no. IFC is an integrated system that is integral to the design of the boat.

The short answer is that boats with technology similar to IFC have been in use for many years, but not in the recreational market. Commercial and Military applications are quite prevalent. The initial design of a hull and system like this is quite complex and can be cost prohibitive. We at Insetta feel the gains in efficiency, speed, range and ride quality far outweigh the initial design and build cost.

Upon deciding to build a foiling Cat, Insetta assembled a team of naval Architects and Marine Engineers to refine an existing and proven design. Using their own state of the art construction techniques, Insetta brought an application specific version to the fiberglass Center Console market.

Why did Insetta Boatworks decide to build a boat with IFC?

For decades, Hydrofoil power boats have proven to be the most efficient craft for a variety of offshore operations.

While pursuing a B.S. in physics in 1960, Victor Insetta was employed doing anti-submarine research that utilized high speed Deep-V patrol boats equipped with hydrofoils. Their ability to pursue submarines at high speed, operate safely offshore, and, being foil borne: allowed their hull to run clear of the water avoiding direct hits from torpedoes. Decades later, Vic and his family rode comfortably on hydrofoil ferries in Italy, flying over white capped waves in the bay of Naples.

In 2017, The Insetta 45 was chosen to be the official chase boat of the America’s cup! Four 45’ Insetta’s catamarans were shipped to Bermuda to assist at various cup events. Sailboats, competing from several countries, were catamarans with hydrofoils ! The Insetta 45’s ran parallel to these “foiling sail cats” to assist with TV coverage. The sailing cats were traveling at speeds approaching 50 mph, 2 ½ times the wind speed . Efficient … you bet . They could also turn on a dime at over 40 mph…

It became obvious: that a foiling cat would make a great offshore outboard power boat… Many foil power boat designs in the past, had wide foils that stuck out the sides, increasing their beam and draft. It made them difficult to dock, and they couldn’t operate in shallow waters. Joel Shine (chief operating officer) of Insetta Boatworks found a catamaran design that had hydrofoils mounted in the tunnel, (that location between the tunnel walls actually improves their efficiency), and does not add to its draft. Further improvements could be added by using our ultra-light high strength infused composite construction.

Joel, Vic and our technical staff reviewed the foiling cat’s initial specifications and performance data, and then sea trialed two foiling cats with internal hydrofoils. Our staff includes a second physicist and pilot… Glen Dobbs. We are all active boaters and we determined we would build our version of a foiling outboard powered cat. We contacted a Naval architect, who designed several successful foiling power cats . He is now a member of our technical staff.

Our 35 “foiling cat” design has set the standard for Foil-Assisted Sportfishing boats. The hull, foils, materials, and engines are synergistically combined, to provide: unrivaled high-speed cruising efficiency , and provide safe offshore handling, with unimpeded shallow water operation, including beaching, without foils or props contacting the bottom.

STATE-OF-THE-ART Facility

Approximately 85 miles North of Seattle, All American Marine’s production facility is located along the Northern shore side of Bellingham Bay in Bellingham, Washington. In early 2017, AAM moved into the brand new, purpose-built 57,000 square foot boat construction facility located on Squalicum Harbor, allowing for multiple vessels of varying sizes to be in construction simultaneously with staggered production schedules.

Barrow, AK: Sitting 320 Miles north of the arctic circle, Barrow, AK is the northernmost city in the United States. Barrow Seach and rescue is a division of Alaska’s North Slope Borough and operates their Munson from thaw to freeze during the arctic circle’s “midnight sun”. Outfitting includes a heated cabin, convertible dinette, pilot and co-pilot suspension seats, head compartment, Garmin navigation package, tow post and motor guard.

Homer, AK: Known as the "halibut fishing capital of the world", Homer, Alaska overlooks Kachemak Bay and the stunning Kenai Mountains and is a popular destination for anglers seeking to catch halibut, salmon, and other fish in the rich waters of Cook Inlet. This 30’ Munson landing craft is designed to take advantage of all Homer has to offer as outfitting includes an enclosed wheelhouse with diesel fired cabin heat, head system, dual bunks, downriggers, pot puller, fish cleaning station, anchor system, diamond plate non-skid decking and jack plates for shallow water operation.

Lake Conroe, TX: Montgomery County ESD 1 is responsible for fire/rescue and emergency response operations on Lake Conroe, a 22,000 acre lake with 157 miles of shoreline.   Their 30’ Munson fire/rescue boat includes a Hale Attack Max 500 GPM fire pump with bow monitor and hose discharges, tow post, engine guard, dive ladder, Whelen LED light bar, search light, dual Humminbird Helix 12 displays and triple axle trailer.

LaConner, WA: M/V High End Hooker is a first class sport fishing machine. The cabin has a large galley, overnight accommodations and head compartment with shower. Anacortes, WA: M/V Serenity Now is used to comfortably transport its owners and guests to and from their island summer home. The full width cabin includes seating for six passengers, Webatso cabin heater, galley, microwave and head compartment. Additional outfitting includes a bow mooring bridle, 12V downriggers, fish cleaning table, davit with pot puller, Fusion stereo and SeaDek flooring. Port and starboard side doors make boarding from the dock easy.

Lake Pleasant, AZ: Located an hour north of Phoenix, Lake Pleasant features 114 miles of shoreline prime for water sports, camping, fishing and a marina equipped to handle over 1000 boats.   The Peoria Fire Department selected this 30’ Munson equipped with a Darley 1000 GPM fire pump with TFT Monsoon monitor and 2.5” and 1.5” hose discharges at the bow.   Additional outfitting includes roll up security door for the main console, Raymarine Axiom Pro navigation package with Realvision 2D sonar and triple axle trailer.   The main deck is finished with SeaDek to keep surfaces cool in intense heat and sun.

Benton Harbor, MI: Seaworks Group, LLC operates this 30’ Munson as a hydrographic survey vessel. An ultra-high resolution multibeam sonar was installed in a custom transducer well on centerline of the catamaran tunnel section. Additional outfitting includes a two person survey desk, computer cabinet, cabin heater, lifting davit, push knees, tow post and engine guard.

Bahamas: The 30’ Monsoon lives aboard a 48 meter yacht to serve as a fishing, diving and beach tender. The cabin accommodates seating for up to 8 passengers and includes a head, galley and air conditioning. Flybridge controls with joystick piloting offers excellent visibility when navigating over shallow reefs. The main deck and rooftop are finished with SeaDek to keep surfaces cool in intense heat and sun. Cargo deck tie down pockets allow for transport of various motorcycles to and from the mothership. A fuel transfer pump with 12’ hose and nozzle allows her to refuel other tenders on board.

Lake Cushman, WA: A popular retreat for hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking, Lake Cushman's shoreline is dotted with resorts and rental cabins. This 30’ Munson Landing Craft uses it’s bow mounted hydraulic rake to clear debris from around structures and serves as a remote platform to release hatchery fish. Porter, IN: Indiana Dunes National Park hugs 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The National Park Services selected this 30’ Munson for transporting crew and gear to remote areas of the park. Outfitting includes an air conditioned cabin with seating for eight, dive ladder, dive bottle racks, side boarding door, lifting davit, anchor windlass and Onan 5kw generator.

Michigan City, IN: Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife is responsible for fisheries management, research, and aquatic invasive species. Their 30’ Munson boat is outfitted with a hydraulic net roller powered by a Honda GX390 power pack. Additional outfitting includes a bow control station, side boarding door, lifting davit, tow post, and engine guard. The outboard motors are installed on hydraulic jack plates to facilitate shallow water operations.

Jacksonville, FL: Logan Diving and Salvage has been engaged in marine salvage and commercial diving operations for over 70 years. Their 30’ Munson is used for equipment transport, marine inspection services, and diving operations. Outfitting includes an enclosed walk around wheelhouse, 4 way lifting eyes, push knees, davit, 120v Inverter, stereo, and an HP dive bottle rack.

Bailey Island, ME: Oceanside Builders operates the M/V Nautilus out of Bailey Island, which is surrounded by over 200 smaller islands accessible only by boat. Their 30’ Packcat is outfitted with adjustable bow push knees, MaxiLift 1 ton deck crane, tow post, fresh water washdown system, solar battery charger and Garmin radar/plotter/sounder. Lake Travis, TX: Travis County ESD #1 is responsible for over 40 miles of shoreline on Lake Travis. Anacortes, WA: Tesoro’s Anacortes Refinery receives crude oil via pipeline from Canada, by rail from North Dakota and by tanker from Alaska. The facility delivers refined products through its marine terminal via ships and barges. Their 30’ Munson Emergency Response Vessel was built as a spill response and fire boat. Outfitting includes a Hale 1000 GPM fire pump, Elkhart Brass HF-350 Hydro-Foam nozzle, 12V bow thruster, port & starboard side doors, davit, tow post and motor guard. The walk around cabin includes four shock mitigating seats, refrigerator, forced air heater, Flir thermal imaging camera and Garmin radar/plotter/sounder with Class B AIS.

Snug Harbor, WA: M/V Steel Wheel splits her time between the San Juan Islands and the California Coast. Her 8’6” beam makes her easily trailerable on the highway. An aft control station, 9.9 HP kicker motor, and Scotty downriggers make her a sport fishing machine. The 10’ long cabin is outfitted with a convertible settee, full galley and head compartment. New Hogan Dam, CA: The US Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District uses their 30’ Packcat for transporting equipment & crew, fire fighting, maintaining aids to navigation, and clearing debris for New Hogan Dam. Outfitting includes a Darley 24 hp fire pump with bow monitor, tow post, motor guard, side boarding doors, bow door extension ramps, search light, tinted windows and trailer.

Marina del Rey, CA: Los Angeles County Department of Beaches & Harbors is responsible for keeping its world-renowned coastline clean and safe, particularly during inclement weather, flooding, fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, oil spills and other emergencies. Their 30’ Packcat is outfitted with a MaxiLift 110 knuckle boom crane, Warn 2000-S deck winch, Furuno NavNet radar/plotter/sounder, VHF & 800 Mhz radios, tow light mast, amber strobe lights, LED flood lights, solar battery charger, and trailer. Customized push knees were installed for landing on rock jetties and breakwaters.

Portland, OR: The Multnomah County Sheriff's River Patrol Unit provides safe commercial and recreational access and passage to the country's 5th largest port, and 110 miles of waterways along the Columbia River, Willamette River, and Sandy River. In addition, the River Patrol Unit provides law enforcement and search & rescue services to all rivers, lakes, shorelines and islands in Multnomah County. Their 30' Munson provides security protection to moorages, marinas, and houseboat communities, and responds to life-threatening calls for service, such as boat collisions, drownings, missing persons, and environmental hazards.

Soldier Cay, Exumas: Elegant Fowl splits her time between the Bahamas and Scotland. In Scotland the Elegant Fowl is operated as hunting and fishing expedition boat. Cabin heat, a full galley and sleeping for three keep the crew happy on cold days. When the boat is in the Bahamas, the forward deck is used for transporting a golf cart and fishing trips. An elevated steering station provides excellent visibility while navigating reefs.

Burnaby, BC: Western Canada Marine Response Corporation maintains an extensive inventory of the most sophisticated spill response equipment available today. It is their mandate to ensure preparedness and protection during oil spills and environmental incidents. Burrard Cleaner No. 4 is the latest addition to their fleet. The wheelhouse is equipped with seating for four and a concealed portable head. Special locker inserts take advantage of under deck space for storage.

Charleston, SC: The Charleston Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Division provides port security, escorts foreign flag vessels into and out of Charleston Harbor, as well as assisting boaters in distress. The unit also supports the Underwater Recovery Team. Vessel features include a Kohler generator and SHOX suspension seats. The co-pilot console houses a side scan sonar system used during recovery operations and crime scene investigation.

Portland, OR: This 30' Packcat supports the United States Air Force 304th RQS maritime operations including diving, water jumps, RAMZ jumps, search and rescue, and emergency response. It is capable of operating at night in extreme weather conditions and swift contaminated water. It is also used to support local authorities in the Pacific Northwest's disaster preparedness plans. Emergency equipment includes a roof mounted stretcher, defibrillators, generator, and first aid supply lockers.

Sanford, FL: Encore Construction Company operates in the St. Johns River near Sanford transporting equipment and fuel to county raw water pump stations on a canal. They also make their vessel available to the local Fire Department for search and rescue. Special features include a roof-mount solar battery charger, hydraulic transom jacks, and a control console bimini top. Tilting T-top windows provide plenty of ventilation on hot days.

Washington, D.C. : DC Metropolitan Police operate their Munson as a multipurpose harbor patrol boat and buoy tender. It is capable lifting 400 lb. buoys out of the water and onto the deck safely. Harbor patrol officers use this vessel as a dive platform during underwater investigation and evidence retrieval missions. Special deck lockers contain Reel Easy sonar tether systems. The Harbor Patrol uses these tether systems to deploy advanced bottom scanning sonar pods during salvage operations.

Wilmington, NC: Sea Exploration, Inc. approached Munson to build a specialized tender for their ship M/V Navigator. The tender's primary function would be to support research and diving operations while at sea. The wheelhouse features seating for four and forced air cabin heat. The deck is outfitted with a retractable canvas Bimini top and four-way lifting eyes. A paint scheme to match the mother ship and superior fit and finish make her a great addition to Sea Exploration's fleet.

Linden, NJ: On any given day, the ConocoPhillips' Bayway Refinery can process up to 238,000 barrels of crude oil from its plant alongside the New Jersey Turnpike in Linden. It's a tradition that goes back more than 100 years, to when John D. Rockefeller built the place. The refinery incident response team's Munson supports spill response and cleanup efforts. A crane hoists the vessel into the water using its four-way lifting eyes.

Lake Havasu, AZ: Lake Havasu is one of the most popular boating destinations in the Southwest. Lake Havasu City Fire Department is responsible for the safety of vessels on the lake's Arizona side. Two Hale HP550 Minuteman pumps supply two monitors and a foam induction monitor. The specialized T-top roof with ladder access provides backboard storage. Rescue and dive equipment is housed in removable deck seat lockers.

Cameroon, West Africa: Cameroon is blessed with gorgeously calm waters off its 400 km shoreline. But in recent years piracy has descended upon coastal settlements. The Cameroon Special Forces Rapid Intervention Battalion commissioned 9 high speed interception craft to give the pirates a real run for their money. The main deck is equipped with an extended roof T-top, six helm seats mounted on storage lockers and a canvas Bimini top.

Bay City, MI: The discharge of pollution into Detroit's Lower Rouge River is now controlled by Michigan's wastewater permitting program. Contamination, however, may still be in the river's sediment. The EPA Research Vessel Mudpuppy II is a shallow draft vessel specifically designed for studies to determine the nature and extent of contaminated sediment in the Great Lakes basin. Features include an Onan 17 kW genset, removable sampling tables, and a Maxilift 1,100lb crane.

Queen Charlotte Island, BC : Highlander Marine Services Ltd (HMS) provides fast, efficient and economical transport in all types of marine support services. M/V Highlander is a Transport Canada Certified passenger carrying vessel with deck space for vehicles, research equipment, and anything else their clients can think of. Special features include a 12 person canister life raft, diesel forced air cabin heater, flood lights, and a fly bridge control console.

Edmonds, WA: Fishing is the name of the game in the Munson family. Moored in the same marina where Bill Munson got his start in 1963 is his fishing battlewagon, the Munson Express. The aft deck is outfitted with a bait station, 12v downriggers and rod storage. A 50 Hp center-mount kicker controlled by the aft station delivers precise trolling speeds. The wheelhouse features and enclosed head, wrap around settee, and a full galley cabinet.

Ninilchik, AK: The Ninilchik Native Association had a need oversee use of the land it owns on both sides of Cook Inlet. With 70,000 acres on the inlet's east side and claim to more than 100,000 acres on the west side, the Native association had been challenged to monitor who was where and what they were up to. 3-D bottom-viewing sonar allows the safe maneuvering of the rock-strewn shallows off the inlet's west shore.

“I really like my 34’ Munson. There’s been high demand in my area for a dive boat and the Munson makes a really good dive platform. I’ve carried a lot of weight on this boat, (exceeding 5,000 lbs on many occasions,) and have never seen the load have any impact on the boat’s ride or handling. This boat handles really well. I go out all the time when there are small craft warnings without any difficulty. The ride can get a bit uncomfortable in gale force winds, (as you would expect) but I’ve never felt unsafe in this boat. I’ve run in seas that are considerably taller than the boat without difficulty.

I’m not an expert regarding metal fabrication, but everyone who has seen my boat and who is knowledgeable about metal work has gone out of their way to tell me that it’s got the best welding of any metal fabrication that they’ve ever seen. One guy who does welding for a living told me that the welds on my boat could be considered the “Olympic gold medal” standard for welding. This boat is really well put together.

I’m completely happy with this boat and don’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone. If and when I buy another boat, (when my wife let’s me) it’s going to be another Munson.”
