The global authority in superyachting
Welcome to the Sunshine State – home to one of the largest in-water boat shows in the world. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show will set sail from 25 to 29 October and will showcase a broad spectrum of yachts never-before-seen in US waters. BOAT International spotlights a selection...
Builder: Sirena Length: 25m
German Frers is responsible for this volume-packed 25-metre cruiser, which hides bags of space across its tri-deck trawler design. Owner flexibility is prioritised in this model, with a flybridge that can be completely enclosed or semi-enclosed to offer a versatile upper deck space with a handy helm station. This is the first Sirena model to offer this kind of forward-thinking functionality – not even the 88 model comes with a fully enclosed flybridge. The yacht makes an exciting addition to the line-up of new yachts at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.
Builder: Azimut Length: 35.3m
The little sister of its larger 38-metre model, the Azimut Grande 36M is set apart from its siblings by her extensive use of glazing, open plan layout and eco-friendly performance – including her high-efficiency hull design created by Pierluigi Ausonio of Studio PLANA in collaboration with the Azimut | Benetti Research and Development department. Full-height, electrically operated sliding glass doors on the upper deck disappear completely into pockets in the superstructure when open, creating a semi-walkaround upper deck where the side decks act as terraces.
Builder: Numarine Length: 37.2m
Designed by the Turkish yard and with Can Yalman , the 37XP features naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini and interiors by Hot Lab. Its lines are a more refined take on the robust look of the 32XP with flowing softer lines that extenuate its longer length. Highlights come in the form of a 10-metre-long flybridge and space for a nine-metre tender on the upper aft deck that, when launched, turns into a large sunbathing platform.
Builder: Gulf Craft Length: 34.1m
This marks the Majesty 111's third continent following her debut in Dubai and first international appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show . With exterior and interior by Phathom (in the studio's first on-the-water project), a highlight of the yacht’s design is its focus on natural light, with up to 40 per cent more glazing than yachts of comparable size. This is particularly evident in the owner’s cabin, which sits below a glass-floored dip pool that sends cascades of light into the cabin below. The new model slots between the existing Majesty 100 and Majesty 120 models.
Builder: Ferretti Yachts Length: 30.1m
Launched in 2021, Ferretti Yachts 1000 showcases a sporty exterior with an excess of glazing, enhanced by the practical beach club aft and spacious flybridge. The yacht's standout features include the "substantial" carbon fibre construction, with both the superstructure and hardtop fully constructed from carbon fibre. The yacht packs impressive interior volume into a modest LOA, and the high-volume Ferretti Group will be making its American debut on the docks at FLIBS.
Builder: Riva Length: 23.3m
First launched by Riva in 2021, the Perseo Super (courtesy of Officina Italiana Design and Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department ) is a hardtop evolution of the Italian shipyard’s earlier Perseo model. Distinguished by her upper deck “sport-fly” helm and 40-square-metre windows, she still carries the Riva tradition in the extensive use of mahogany and polished stainless steel. A design highlight is her convertible cockpit, which sees the dining area become a spacious sunpad by lowering the table for eight and covering it with cushions.
Builder: Wally Yachts Length: 24.1m
First premiering at the Venice Boat Show (and then at Cannes), the wallywhy150's "semi-explorer, semi-fly" design harnesses the same team as her big sister, the wallywhy200. From the drawing boards of Wally-Ferretti Group Engineering team, Luca Bassani and Studio Vallicelli Design , the 150GT yacht boasts a number of unique features, including a 270-degree owner’s cabin located in the bow. She also offers 50 per cent more living space compared to other yachts of her size, according to the shipyard.
Builder: Benetti Length: 34.4m
RWD -designed, the Oasis 34M is a model for "the modern-day owner" with its open-plan social spaces and signature Oasis Deck. This patented aft-deck design comes with opening balconies that, once extended over the water, are ideal for diving in, getting to grips with water toys, and boarding on or off a tender. Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović took delivery of the second hull in the series, named Unknown , in 2022.
Builder: Viking Length: 27.4m
Inspired by the previous Viking 92 and Viking 80 models, the sportfishing Viking 90 yacht has a streamlined profile with the option to have an enclosed or open bridge. There is also a one-piece wraparound enclosed bridge windshield, enhancing visibility. Delivered in 2023, this model is well-suited to serious anglers thanks to its 922-litre live well on the 224-square-metre cockpit, making it a boat that's worth seeing at FLIBS.
Builder: Sunseeker Length: 27.1m
This model is poised to offer something "completely novel" to the British yard's existing Ocean range. Named after its gross tonnage, the Sunseeker Ocean 182 features a newly designed enclosed flybridge and a widebody hull that allows for a 7.2-metre beam and plenty of internal volume. Combine this with a single helm station on the upper deck and you have an open-plan yacht that allows for "easy transition from space to space".
Builder: Sunreef Length: 23.8m
Known as the comfy cat with solar panels galore, the 80 Sunreef Power Sól is named after the Norse sun goddess and will be showing off her bronzed good looks in Fort Lauderdale. Its ultra-slim “solar skin” – composite-integrated solar panels – is built into the yacht's hull, bimini roof and superstructure, and it also features custom-engineered battery banks with a density of less than 5.2 kg per kWh. The catamaran uses this green technology for fuel-free cruising in total silence and can accommodate eight guests in a custom-tailored four-cabin layout.
Builder: Sanlorenzo Length: 27.3m
Building on the success of the SD96 and SD118, this entry-level model boasts a flexible configuration and optimised hull design. One-way glazing allows the windows on the main deck and lower deck to remain concealed, resulting in a more "harmonious" look, according to the yard. She's designed by Zuccon International and Patricia Urquiola, with Philippe Briand also contributing research into the yacht’s efficient form.
Builder: Princess Yachts Length: 29.1m
Making her way to North America for the first time is the flagship of Princess' new Y Class series, the Y95. Featuring exterior design by Pininfarina and Olesinski , it has a dramatically different layout to the X Class despite utilising the same hull structure and engineering platform. The change is largely seen in the series' expansive exterior spaces, including an open flybridge area with cleverly concealed crane, a flybridge helm and a raised pilothouse. The Y95 will be part of a five-yacht display that includes the F50, F55, Y85, and the show debut of its "super flybridge" model X80.
Builder: Bering Yachts Length: 29.1m
Making her world debut at FLIBS this year, Papillon is a steel-hulled, semi-custom explorer primed for prolonged bluewater trips. As such, particular attention was paid to “the crew members’ comfort and safety” according to Bering CEO Alexei Mikhailov, with spacious quarters that include a separate galley and crew resting mess. Her pale-grey hull and red bootstripe recall Bering's 44.2-metre flagship Heeus .
Builder: Azimut Length: 26m
The Grande 26M touts a distinctive Alberto Mancini exterior, while interiors are the work of Achille Salvagni – the same pairing that produced the Grande 36M and Grande Trideck flagship. Part of Azimut's pioneering fleet of "Low Emission Yachts", her Large POD 4600 propulsion system, combined with a lightweight superstructure, delivers 20 per cent lower fuel emissions (and therefore CO2 emissions).
Builder: Alpha Custom Yachts Length: 31.1m
A World Superyacht Award -nominated series, the Spritz 102 exhibits the design work of Giorgio Cassetta and sees several standout features contained within an eight-metre beam. This includes a 2.2-metre-high ceiling, oversized windows and a tiered aft deck with a heated plunge pool and hydraulic platform, all cultivating a "Miami villa" feel on the water. There are only two Spritz 102's currently on the water – Vivace and Saint V and it is Vivace that will appear at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

This is a complete guide on writing cause and effect essays. Find a link to our essay sample at the end. Let's get started!
A cause and effect essay is the type of paper that the author is using to analyze the causes and effects of a particular action or event. A curriculum usually includes this type of exercise to test your ability to understand the logic of certain events or actions.
If you can see the logic behind cause and effect in the world around you, you will encounter fewer problems when writing. If not, writing this kind of paper will give you the chance to improve your skillset and your brain’s ability to reason.
“Shallow men believe in luck or in circumstance. Strong men believe in cause and effect.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
In this article, the Handmade Writing team will find out how to create an outline for your cause and effect essay – the key to successful essay writing.
Before writing this kind of essay, you need to draft the structure. A good structure will result in a good paper, so it’s important to have a plan before you start. But remember , there’s no need to reinvent the wheel: just about every type of structure has already been formulated by someone.
If you are still unsure about the definition of an essay, you can take a look at our guide: What is an Essay?
Generally speaking, there are three types of cause and effect essays. We usually differentiate them by the number of and relationships between the different causes and the effects. Let’s take a quick look at these three different cases:
This kind of essay illustrates how different causes can lead to one effect. The idea here is to try and examine a variety of causes, preferably ones that come from different fields, and prove how they contributed to a particular effect. If you are writing about World War I, for example, mention the political, cultural, and historical factors that led to the great war.
By examining a range of fundamental causes, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge about the topic.
Here is how to structure this type of essay:
This type of cause and effect essay is constructed to show the various effects of a particular event, problem, or decision. Once again, you will have to demonstrate your comprehensive knowledge and analytical mastery of the field. There is no need to persuade the reader or present your argument . When writing this kind of essay, in-depth knowledge of the problem or event’s roots will be of great benefit. If you know why it happened, it will be much easier to write about its effects.
Here is the structure for this kind of essay:
This is the most challenging type. You need to maintain a chain of logic that demonstrates a sequence of actions and consequences, leading to the end of the chain. Although this is usually the most interesting kind of cause and effect essay, it can also be the most difficult to write.
Here is the outline structure:
Let’s take a look at an example. Below, you will find an outline for the topic “The causes of obesity” (Type 1) :
As you can see, we used a blended strategy here. When writing about the ever-increasing consumption of unhealthy food, it is logical to talk about the marketing strategies that encourage people to buy fast food. If you are discussing fitness trainers, it is important to mention that people need to be checked by a doctor more often, etc.
In case you face some issues with writing your Cause and Effect essay, you can always count on our Essay Writers !
If you start by structuring each paragraph and collecting suitable examples, the writing process will be much simpler. The final essay might not come up as a classic five paragraph essay – it all depends on the cause-effect chain and the number of statements of your essay.
In the Introduction, try to give the reader a general idea of what the cause and effect essay will contain. For an experienced reader, a thesis statement will be an indication that you know what you are writing about. It is also important to emphasize how and why this problem is relevant to modern life. If you ever need to write about the Caribbean crisis, for instance, state that the effects of the Cold War are still apparent in contemporary global politics.

In the Body, provide plenty of details about what causes led to the effects. Once again, if you have already assembled all the causes and effects with their relevant examples when writing your plan, you shouldn’t have any problems. But, there are some things to which you must pay particular attention. To begin with, try to make each paragraph the same length: it looks better visually. Then, try to avoid weak or unconvincing causes. This is a common mistake, and the reader will quickly realize that you are just trying to write enough characters to reach the required word count.
Moreover, you need to make sure that your causes are actually linked to their effects. This is particularly important when you write a “chained” cause and effect essay (type 3) . You need to be able to demonstrate that each cause was actually relevant to the final result. As I mentioned before, writing the Body without preparing a thorough and logical outline is often an omission.
The Conclusion must be a summary of the thesis statement that you proposed in the Introduction. An effective Conclusion means that you have a well-developed understanding of the subject. Notably, writing the Conclusion can be one of the most challenging parts of this kind of project. You typically write the Conclusion once you have finished the Body, but in practice, you will sometimes find that a well-written conclusion will reveal a few mistakes of logic in the body!

A cause and effect essay is a type of essay writing that explores the relationship between events, actions, or phenomena (causes) and their outcomes or consequences (effects) .
In this type of essay, the writer analyzes how one event leads to another, providing insights into the underlying causes and the resulting effects. Cause and effect essays aim to explain the connections between various occurrences and explain the reasons behind certain outcomes.
They often require critical thinking, careful analysis, and the use of evidence and examples to support arguments.
You may confuse cause-and-effect essays with compare and contrast essays . While cause and effect essays focus on analyzing the relationship between events, compare and contrast essays examine similarities and differences between two or more subjects or ideas.
There are two main structural types commonly used to write a cause and effect essay: the block structure and the chain structure.
In the block structure, the writer first discusses all the causes of the event in one section, followed by a separate section dedicated to discussing all the effects.
This cause and effect essay format allows for a clear separation between the causes and effects, making it easier for the reader to understand the relationships between them.
|
Use the block structure when:
In the chain structure, each cause is followed immediately by its corresponding effect(s), creating a chain-like sequence of events.
This structure emphasizes the direct relationship between each cause and its effect, providing a more immediate and interconnected narrative.
|
Use the chain structure when:
Creating an outline is essential for organizing your thoughts and structuring your cause and effect essay effectively.
Here's a basic outline to guide you through the writing process:
Start with an attention-grabbing statement or question to engage the reader. Provide context and background information on the topic. Clearly state the main causes and effects you will discuss in your essay.
Introduction to Causes Introduce the first cause you will discuss. Provide an explanation of the cause and its significance. Support your explanation with relevant examples or evidence.Introduce the effects resulting from the first cause. Discuss the consequences or outcomes of the cause. Provide examples or evidence to illustrate the effects. Repeat the above structure for each additional cause and its corresponding effects. Summarize the main causes and effects discussed in the essay. Highlight the connections between the causes and effects. End with a thought-provoking statement or suggestion for further exploration of the topic. |

Writing a cause and effect essay involves examining the reasons (causes) and outcomes (effects) of a particular event, phenomenon, or situation. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you craft an effective cause and effect essay:
Start by selecting a topic that interests you and has clear cause-and-effect relationships. It could be a social issue, scientific phenomenon, historical event, or any other subject with identifiable causes and effects.
For example, "The Effects of Climate Change on Wildlife Populations" or "Causes of Obesity in Developed Countries."
Gather relevant information and evidence to support your thesis statement . Look for credible sources such as academic journals, books, government reports, and reputable websites.
Ensure you have a thorough understanding of both the causes and effects related to your chosen topic.
Craft a clear and concise thesis statement that outlines the main causes and effects you will discuss in your essay. Your thesis should provide a roadmap for the reader and clearly state your position on the topic.
For instance, "The rise in carbon emissions from human activities is leading to severe consequences for global ecosystems."
Create a structured outline that organizes your ideas and arguments logically. Divide your essay into introduction , body paragraphs (each discussing a specific cause or effect), and conclusion .
Each body paragraph should focus on one cause or effect and provide supporting details and evidence.
Begin with an engaging introduction that provides background information on the topic and introduces your thesis statement.
Hook the reader's attention with an interesting fact, statistic, or anecdote related to your topic. Clearly state the purpose of your essay and preview the main points you will discuss.
In recent years, the proliferation of social media platforms has revolutionized the way people communicate, connect, and consume information. While these platforms offer numerous benefits such as instant communication and global networking, they have also been associated with various negative effects on mental health. This essay explores the causes behind the rise of social media and its detrimental effects on individuals' mental well-being. |
In the body paragraphs, explore the causes or effects of the topic in detail. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the cause or effect you will be discussing.
Then, provide evidence and examples to support your claim. Use data, statistics, expert opinions, and real-life examples to strengthen your arguments. Make sure to explain the causal relationship between the factors you're discussing.
One of the primary causes behind the surge in social media usage is the widespread availability of smartphones and internet access. With the advent of affordable smartphones and widespread internet connectivity, people have constant access to social media platforms, leading to increased usage. Additionally, the addictive nature of social media interfaces, characterized by endless scrolling and notifications, further fuels this phenomenon. As individuals spend more time on social media, they become increasingly dependent on these platforms for social validation, entertainment, and information.
The excessive use of social media has been linked to various detrimental effects on mental health, including increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Constant exposure to carefully curated images and lifestyles on social media can create unrealistic expectations and foster feelings of inadequacy among users. Moreover, the prevalence of cyberbullying and online harassment on these platforms can exacerbate existing mental health issues and lead to social withdrawal. Studies have shown a correlation between heavy social media usage and poor sleep quality, as individuals often sacrifice sleep to engage with online content, further compromising their mental well-being. |
Use transition words and sentences to smoothly transition between paragraphs and maintain coherence throughout your essay.
These transitions help guide the reader through your arguments and ensure a logical flow of ideas.
Summarize the main points of your essay in the conclusion and restate your thesis statement. Reflect on the significance of your findings and emphasize the importance of understanding the causes and effects of the topic.
Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion; instead, offer insights or suggestions for further research or action.
In conclusion, the rise of social media has had profound implications for individuals' mental health, driven by factors such as increased smartphone usage and the addictive nature of social media platforms. While social media offers unparalleled opportunities for communication and connection, its negative effects on mental well-being cannot be ignored. It is essential for individuals to strike a balance between online and offline interactions and practice mindfulness while using social media to mitigate its adverse effects on mental health. Additionally, further research and awareness efforts are needed to address the underlying causes and consequences of excessive social media usage in society. |
Review your essay for clarity, coherence, and grammatical accuracy. Make sure each paragraph contributes to the overall argument and that your ideas are well-supported by evidence.
Once you've made revisions and edits, finalize your essay by formatting it according to the guidelines provided by your instructor or publication.
Double-check citations and references to ensure they are accurate and properly formatted according to the required citation style (e.g., APA, MLA).

One of the most important aspects of writing a cause and effect essay is understanding its purpose and structure. By understanding these key elements, you can effectively communicate the relationship between causes and effects, and present your argument in a clear and organized manner.
In a cause and effect essay, the purpose is to analyze the causes of a specific event or phenomenon and explain the effects that result from those causes. This type of essay is often used to explore the connections between different factors and to demonstrate how one event leads to another.
To structure your cause and effect essay, consider using a chronological or sequential order. Start by introducing the topic and providing some background information on the causes you will discuss. Then, present your thesis statement, which should clearly state your main argument or claim.
In the body paragraphs, discuss each cause or group of causes in a separate paragraph. Provide detailed explanations, examples, and evidence to support your claims. Make sure to use transitional words and phrases to guide the reader through your essay and to show the logical progression of causes and effects.
Finally, in the conclusion, summarize your main points and restate your thesis, reinforcing your overall argument. You can also discuss the broader implications of your analysis and suggest possible solutions or further research.
By understanding the purpose and structure of a cause and effect essay, you can effectively convey your ideas and arguments to your readers. This will help them follow your reasoning and see the connections between causes and effects, leading to a more convincing and impactful essay.
When embarking on the journey of writing a cause and effect essay, one of the first steps is to choose an engaging and relevant topic. The topic sets the foundation for the entire essay, determining the direction and scope of the content.
To select an effective topic, it is important to consider your interests, as well as the interests of your intended audience. Think about subjects that captivate you and inspire curiosity. Consider current events, personal experiences, or areas of study that pique your interest. By choosing a topic that you are genuinely passionate about, you will be more motivated to conduct thorough research and present compelling arguments.
Additionally, it is essential to select a topic that is relevant and meaningful. Identify an issue or phenomenon that has a clear cause-and-effect relationship, allowing you to explore the connections and consequences in depth. Look for topics that are timely and impactful, as this will ensure that your essay resonates with readers and addresses significant issues in society.
Moreover, a well-chosen topic should have enough depth and breadth to support a comprehensive analysis. Avoid selecting topics that are too broad or shallow, as this can make it challenging to delve into the causes and effects in a meaningful way. Narrow down your focus to a specific aspect or aspect of a broader topic to ensure that you have enough material to explore and analyze.
In conclusion, choosing a topic for your cause and effect essay is a critical step that will shape the entire writing process. By selecting a topic that aligns with your interests, is relevant and meaningful, and has enough depth and breadth, you will lay the foundation for a compelling and informative essay.
Before diving into writing a cause and effect essay, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive research on the topic of your choice. This research phase will provide you with the necessary background information and context to develop a strong and well-supported essay.
During the research process, explore various sources such as books, academic journals, reputable websites, and credible news articles. Utilize synonyms for “research” like “investigate” or “explore” to keep your writing engaging and varied.
Avoid relying solely on a single source or biased information. Instead, strive to gather a variety of perspectives and data points that will enhance the credibility and validity of your essay.
Take notes as you research, highlighting key points, statistics, and quotes that you may want to include in your essay. Organize your findings in a clear and structured manner, making it easier to refer back to them as you begin writing.
Incorporating well-researched evidence and supporting examples into your cause and effect essay will lend credibility to your arguments, making them more persuasive and convincing. By conducting thorough research, you will be able to present a well-rounded and informed analysis of the topic you are writing about.
One of the crucial steps in writing any type of essay, including cause and effect essays, is creating an outline. An outline helps to organize your thoughts and ideas before you start writing, ensuring that your essay has a clear and logical structure. In this section, we will discuss the importance of creating an outline and provide some tips on how to create an effective outline for your cause and effect essay.
When creating an outline, it is important to start with a clear understanding of the purpose and main points of your essay. Begin by identifying the main cause or event that you will be discussing, as well as its effects or consequences. This will serve as the foundation for your outline, allowing you to structure your essay in a logical and coherent manner.
Once you have identified the main cause and effects, it is time to organize your ideas into a clear and logical order. One effective way to do this is by using a table. Create a table with two columns, one for the cause and one for the effect. Then, list the main causes and effects in each column, using bullet points or short phrases. This will help you see the connections between the different causes and effects, making it easier to write your essay.
In addition to listing the main causes and effects, it is also important to include supporting details and examples in your outline. These can help to strengthen your argument and provide evidence for your claims. Include specific examples, facts, and statistics that support each cause and effect, and organize them under the relevant point in your outline.
Lastly, make sure to review and revise your outline before you start writing your essay. Check for any gaps in your logic or missing information, and make any necessary adjustments. Your outline should serve as a roadmap for your essay, guiding you through the writing process and ensuring that your essay is well-structured and coherent.
In conclusion, creating an outline is an essential step in writing a cause and effect essay. It helps to organize your thoughts and ideas, ensuring that your essay has a clear and logical structure. By identifying the main cause and effects, organizing your ideas into a table, including supporting details and examples, and reviewing your outline, you can create an effective outline that will guide you through the writing process.
Once you have identified the main causes and effects of the topic you are writing about, it is time to develop your body paragraphs. In these paragraphs, you will present specific evidence and examples to support your claims. The body of your essay should be well-structured and focused, with each paragraph addressing a single cause or effect.
Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence that clearly states the main point you will be discussing. Then, provide detailed explanations and evidence to support your argument. This can include statistics, research findings, expert opinions, or personal anecdotes. Remember to use clear and concise language to convey your ideas effectively.
In order to make your writing more coherent, you can use transition words and phrases to connect your ideas and create a logical flow between paragraphs. Words like “because”, “as a result”, “therefore”, and “consequently” can be used to show cause and effect relationships.
Additionally, it is important to use paragraph unity, which means that each paragraph should focus on a single cause or effect. Avoid including unrelated information or discussing multiple causes/effects in a single paragraph, as this can confuse the reader and weaken your argument.
Furthermore, consider using examples and evidence to enhance the clarity and persuasiveness of your arguments. Concrete examples and real-life scenarios can help illustrate the cause and effect relationship and make your writing more engaging to the reader.
In conclusion, developing the body paragraphs of your cause and effect essay is crucial in presenting a well-structured and persuasive argument. By using topic sentences, clear explanations, transition words, and relevant evidence, you can effectively convey your ideas and convince the reader of the cause and effect relationship you are discussing.

A cause and effect essay looks at the reasons (or causes) for something, then discusses the results (or effects). For this reason, cause and effect essays are sometimes referred to as reason and result essays. They are one of the most common forms of organisation in academic writing. Sometimes the whole essay will be cause and effect, though sometimes this may be only part of the whole essay. It is also possible, especially for short exam essays, that only the causes or the effects, not both, are discussed. See the examples below.
There are two main ways to structure a cause and effect essay. These are similar to the ways to structure problem-solution essays , namely using a block or a chain structure. For the block structure, all of the causes are listed first, and all of the effects are listed afterwards. For the chain structure, each cause is followed immediately by the effect. Usually that effect will then be the cause of the next effect, which is why this structure is called 'chain'. Both types of structure have their merits. The former is generally clearer, especially for shorter essays, while the latter ensures that any effects you present relate directly to the causes you have given.
The two types of structure, block and chain , are shown in the diagram below.

Cause and effect structure words are transition signals which show the cause and effect relationships. It is important to be clear which is the cause (or reason) and which is the effect (or result), and to use the correct transition word or phrase. Remember that a cause happens first , and the effect happens later .
Below are some common cause and effect structure words. X is used to indicate a cause, while Y is used to indicate the effect.
Below is a cause and effect essay. This essay uses the block structure . Click on the different areas (in the shaded boxes to the right) to highlight the different structural aspects in this essay, i.e. Causes, Effects, and structure words. This will highlight not simply the paragraphs, but also the thesis statement and summary , as these repeat the causes and effects contained in the main body.
Title: More and more women are now going out to work and some women are now the major salary earner in the family. What are the causes of this, and what effect is this having on families and society?
In the past, most women stayed at home to take care of domestic chores such as cooking or cleaning. Women's liberation and feminism have meant that this situation has been transformed and in contemporary society women are playing an almost equal role to men in terms of work. This has had significant consequences , both in terms of the family , for example by improving quality of life and increasing children's sense of independence , and also for society itself with greater gender equality . The main reasons behind the increase of women in the workplace are women's liberation and feminism. The women's liberation movement originated in the 1960s and was popularised by authors such as Simone de Beauvoir. As a consequence of this, new legislation emerged, granting women equal rights to men in many fields, in particular employment. Because of feminist ideas, men have taken up roles which were previously seen as being for women only, most importantly those related to child rearing. As a result of this, women have more time to pursue their own careers and interests. These have led to some significant effects, both to family life and to society as a whole. Although the earning capacity of a woman in her lifetime is generally much less than that of a man, she can nevertheless make a significant contribution to the family income. The most important consequence of this is an improved quality of life. By helping to maintain a steady income for the family, the pressure on the husband is considerably reduced, hence improving both the husband's and the wife's emotional wellbeing. Additionally, the purchasing power of the family will also be raised. This means that the family can afford more luxuries such as foreign travel and a family car. A further effect on the family is the promotion of independence in the children. Some might argue that having both parents working might be damaging to the children because of a lack of parental attention. However, such children have to learn to look after themselves at an earlier age, and their parents often rely on them to help with the housework. This therefore teaches them important life skills. As regards society, the most significant impact of women going to work is greater gender equality. There are an increasing number of women who are becoming politicians, lawyers, and even CEOs and company managers. This in turn has led to greater equality for women in all areas of life, not just employment. For example, women today have much stronger legal rights to protect themselves against domestic violence and sexual discrimination in the workplace. In conclusion, the increasing number of women at work has brought about some important changes to family life, including improved quality of life and increased independence for children, as well as affecting society itself. It is clear that the sexes are still a long way from being equal in all areas of life, however, and perhaps the challenge for the present century is to ensure that this takes place.

Let’s dive in!
A cause and effect essay explores why things happen (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). This type of essay aims to uncover the connections between events, actions, or phenomena. It helps readers understand the reasons behind certain outcomes.
In a cause and effect essay, you typically:
Cause and effect essays are common in various academic disciplines. For instance, studies in sciences, history, and the social sciences rely on essential cause and effect questions. For instance, "what are the effects of climate change?", or "what are the causes of poverty?"
Now that you know what a cause and effect is, let’s read some examples.
Here is an example of a well-written cause and effect essay on social media. Let’s analyze it in parts to learn why it is good and how you can write an effective essay yourself.
Do you know that the average person now spends over two hours a day on social media platforms? Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. Whether it's Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, these platforms have revolutionized the way we connect, communicate, and share our experiences with the world. However, while they offer many advantages, the excessive use of social media can have detrimental effects on our mental health. In this essay, we will explore the causes and effects of this relationship, shedding light on the profound influence social media has on our well-being. |
The essay begins with a compelling hook that grabs the reader's attention. It presents a brief overview of the topic clearly and concisely. The introduction covers the issue and ends with a strong thesis statement , stating the essay's main argument – that excessive use of social media can negatively impact mental health.
The rise of social media has led to an unprecedented increase in screen time. According to recent statistics, the average person spends over two hours per day on social media platforms. This surge is largely due to the addictive nature of these platforms, which are designed to keep us engaged. Endless scrolling, constant notifications, and the desire for likes and comments contribute to a compulsive need to check social media. This excessive use of social media is the first point to examine. |
The first body paragraph sets the stage by discussing the first cause - excessive social media use. It provides data and statistics to support the claim, which makes the argument more compelling. The analysis highlights the addictive nature of social media and its impact on users. This clear and evidence-based explanation prepares the reader for the cause-and-effect relationship to be discussed.
As social media usage has surged, so too has the number of people reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown a significant correlation between the time spent on social media and the likelihood of experiencing these mental health issues. Constant exposure to carefully curated, idealized representations of others' lives can lead to unfavorable social comparisons. We start to measure our worth by the number of likes and followers we have, and we often fall short, which leads to anxiety and depression. |
The second body paragraph effectively explores the effect of excessive social media use, which is increased anxiety and depression. It provides a clear cause-and-effect relationship, with studies backing the claims. The paragraph is well-structured and uses relatable examples, making the argument more persuasive.
A second cause of the negative impact of social media on mental health is the phenomenon of social comparison. When we scroll through our feeds and see our friends and acquaintances posting photos of their exotic vacations, happy relationships, and personal achievements, we can't help but compare our own lives. The fear of missing out (FOMO) is a real and growing concern in today's digital age. We are constantly bombarded with images and stories that make us feel like we are missing out on the excitement and fulfillment that others seem to be experiencing. |
The third body paragraph effectively introduces the second cause, which is social comparison and FOMO. It explains the concept clearly and provides relatable examples. It points out the relevance of this cause in the context of social media's impact on mental health, preparing the reader for the subsequent effect to be discussed.
Social comparison and FOMO have tangible effects on our mental health. People who engage in these comparisons often feel isolated and alone. The constant exposure to others' seemingly perfect lives can lead to a sense of inadequacy and decreased self-esteem. We start to question our own choices and accomplishments, believing that we are falling short in comparison to our peers. |
The fourth body paragraph effectively explores the second effect of social comparison and FOMO, which is isolation and decreased self-esteem. It provides real-world consequences and uses relatable examples.
In conclusion, the impact of social media on our mental health is undeniable. The excessive use of social media leads to increased anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy, while the fear of missing out amplifies these negative emotions. It's crucial to acknowledge these challenges and their effect on our well-being. As we navigate this ever-evolving digital landscape, finding a healthier balance in the digital age becomes essential. We must consider limiting our social media use, curating our online experiences, and promoting digital detox. By taking these steps, we can protect our mental health and ensure that the benefits of social media are enjoyed without the accompanying harm. |
The conclusion effectively summarizes the key points discussed in the essay. It restates the thesis statement and offers practical solutions, demonstrating a well-rounded understanding of the topic. The analysis emphasizes the significance of the conclusion in leaving the reader with a call to action or reflection on the essay's central theme.

Understand how to write a cause-and-effect essay.
It is often considered human nature to ask, “why?” and “how?” We want to know how our child got sick so we can better prevent it from happening in the future, or why our colleague a pay raise because we want one as well. We want to know how much money we will save over the long term if we buy a hybrid car. These examples identify only a few of the relationships we think about in our lives, but each shows the importance of understanding cause and effect.
A cause is something that produces an event or condition; an effect is what results from an event or condition. The purpose of the cause-and-effect essay is to determine how various phenomena relate in terms of origins and results. Sometimes the connection between cause and effect is clear, but often determining the exact relationship between the two is very difficult. For example, the following effects of a cold may be easily identifiable: a sore throat, runny nose, and a cough. But determining the cause of the sickness can be far more difficult. A number of causes are possible, and to complicate matters, these possible causes could have combined to cause the sickness. That is, more than one cause may be responsible for any given effect. Therefore, cause-and-effect discussions are often complicated and frequently lead to debates and arguments.
Use the complex nature of cause and effect to your advantage. Often it is not necessary, or even possible, to find the exact cause of an event or to name the exact effect. So, when formulating a thesis, you can claim one of a number of causes or effects to be the primary, or main, cause or effect. As soon as you claim that one cause or one effect is more crucial than the others, you have developed a thesis.
Consider the causes and effects in the following thesis statements. List a cause and effect for each one on your own sheet of paper.
Write three cause-and-effect thesis statements of your own for each of the following five broad topics.
The cause-and-effect essay opens with a general introduction to the topic, which then leads to a thesis that states the main cause, main effect, or various causes and effects of a condition or event.
The cause-and-effect essay can be organized in one of the following two primary ways:
For example, if your essay were on childhood obesity, you could start by talking about the effect of childhood obesity and then discuss the cause or you could start the same essay by talking about the cause of childhood obesity and then move to the effect.
Regardless of which structure you choose, be sure to explain each element of the essay fully and completely. Explaining complex relationships requires the full use of evidence, such as scientific studies, expert testimony, statistics, and anecdotes.
Because cause-and-effect essays determine how phenomena are linked, they make frequent use of certain words and phrases that denote such linkage. See Table 10.4 “Phrases of Causation” for examples of such terms.
as a result | consequently | because | due to |
hence | since | thus | therefore |
The conclusion should wrap up the discussion and reinforce the thesis, leaving the reader with a clear understanding of the relationship that was analyzed.
Be careful of resorting to empty speculation. In writing, speculation amounts to unsubstantiated guessing. Writers are particularly prone to such trappings in cause-and-effect arguments due to the complex nature of finding links between phenomena. Be sure to have clear evidence to support the claims that you make.
Look at some of the cause-and-effect relationships from Exercise 2. Outline the links you listed. Outline one using a cause-then-effect structure. Outline the other using the effect-then-cause structure.
Choose an event or condition that you think has an interesting cause-and-effect relationship. Introduce your topic in an engaging way. End your introduction with a thesis that states the main cause, the main effect, or both.
Organize your essay by starting with either the cause-then-effect structure or the effect-then-cause structure. Within each section, you should clearly explain and support the causes and effects using a full range of evidence. If you are writing about multiple causes or multiple effects, you may choose to sequence either in terms of order of importance. In other words, order the causes from least to most important (or vice versa), or order the effects from least important to most important (or vice versa).
Use the phrases of causation when trying to forge connections between various events or conditions. This will help organize your ideas and orient the reader. End your essay with a conclusion that summarizes your main points and reinforces your thesis.
Choose one of the ideas you outlined in Note 10.85 “Exercise 3” and write a full cause-and-effect essay. Be sure to include an engaging introduction, a clear thesis, strong evidence and examples, and a thoughtful conclusion.

Effects of Video Game Addiction
Video game addition is a serious problem in many parts of the world today and deserves more attention. It is no secret that children and adults in many countries throughout the world, including Japan, China, and the United States, play video games every day. Most players are able to limit their usage in ways that do not interfere with their daily lives, but many others have developed an addiction to playing video games and suffer detrimental effects.
An addiction can be described in several ways, but generally speaking, addictions involve unhealthy attractions to substances or activities that ultimately disrupt the ability of a person to keep up with regular daily responsibilities. Video game addiction typically involves playing games uncontrollably for many hours at a time—some people will play only four hours at a time while others cannot stop for over twenty-four hours. Regardless of the severity of the addiction, many of the same effects will be experienced by all.
One common effect of video game addiction is isolation and withdrawal from social experiences. Video game players often hide in their homes or in Internet cafés for days at a time—only reemerging for the most pressing tasks and necessities. The effect of this isolation can lead to a breakdown of communication skills and often a loss in socialization. While it is true that many games, especially massive multiplayer online games, involve a very real form of e-based communication and coordination with others, and these virtual interactions often result in real communities that can be healthy for the players, these communities and forms of communication rarely translate to the types of valuable social interaction that humans need to maintain typical social functioning. As a result, the social networking in these online games often gives the users the impression that they are interacting socially, while their true social lives and personal relations may suffer.
Another unfortunate product of the isolation that often accompanies video game addiction is the disruption of the user’s career. While many players manage to enjoy video games and still hold their jobs without problems, others experience challenges at their workplace. Some may only experience warnings or demerits as a result of poorer performance, or others may end up losing their jobs altogether. Playing video games for extended periods of time often involves sleep deprivation, and this tends to carry over to the workplace, reducing production and causing habitual tardiness.
Video game addiction may result in a decline in overall health and hygiene. Players who interact with video games for such significant amounts of time can go an entire day without eating and even longer without basic hygiene tasks, such as using the restroom or bathing. The effects of this behavior pose significant danger to their overall health.
The causes of video game addiction are complex and can vary greatly, but the effects have the potential to be severe. Playing video games can and should be a fun activity for all to enjoy. But just like everything else, the amount of time one spends playing video games needs to be balanced with personal and social responsibilities.

The Effect of the Internet on Modern Society
The last 50 years have been largely influential in many aspects of technological innovation. Many devices that were considered fiction half a century ago, such as mobile phones, microwaves, jets and many others are taken for granted nowadays. Each of these modern devices impacts people’s everyday activities. However, among the wide variety of innovations that exist today, the Internet is, perhaps, the most influential of all and it affects almost all spheres of human life.
Since the Internet, or the World Wide Web, has gained acceptance across the globe, it has demonstrated considerable influence on people’s lives, and it has also become central to many of the key changes experienced in today’s society. For example, social networks, such as Facebook, allow individuals to communicate and to link on social levels with people they may have lost touch with. A couple of decades ago, this was much more difficult to achieve, and communication was expensive (fees for international phone calls) and irregular (the slowness of snail mail). Aside from the social impact, social media has also affected business and commerce, by offering multiple options for networking and allowing for widespread dissemination of information across a broad geographic scope (Calvó-Armengol & Zenou, 2005).
Mobility of information, resources and skills has changed dramatically as a result of the World Wide Web growing and gaining popularity. These days, many individuals are able to work from home, with businesses being able to obtain a global reach for their products and services without the substantial investments. This has changed the world of commerce, not only from the point of view of the businesses, but also the consumer. Those looking to purchase products and services can research available providers, regardless of their geographic location, and can purchase items from any location. Competition is therefore substantially increased by offering consumers the opportunity to improve the products and services they receive, as well as being considerably more aware of the options available, due to the ease with which information can be obtained online (Kucuk & Sandeep, 2007).
Education has also changed dramatically due to the Internet. Changes can be observed in two areas. First, there is an increasing network of online educational opportunities such as the Open University, allowing those who could not have attended a traditional learning environment to obtain the qualifications that they need to proceed with their careers. Secondly, the World Wide Web has also offered many opportunities for research and for the collection of information (Chandler, 2002).
Therefore we can see that the Internet contributes significantly to many important spheres of everyday private and business life. Thus, it helps people all over the world keep in touch, and communicate instantaneously and inexpensively. Allowing individuals increased access to information and resources enables people to make informed decisions in a much more efficient manner, and it increases their ability to communicate effectively in all aspects of day-to-day life.
The World Wide Web has also shifted commerce models, as well as it has had an impact on the way people purchase things, which has strengthened competition. Finally, the Internet has facilitated educational opportunities, providing people with the option to study online, and offering them more opportunities for reaching their goals.

If your flight was canceled, your medical procedure rescheduled, or you woke up to find the blue screen of death on your PC, you’re already aware of the massive tech outage that swept across the globe early Friday.
A software security update gone awry caused a breakdown of computer systems around the world, affecting commercial flights, hospital operations, financial services, and media broadcasts.
Learn more: How outage affected businesses .
The software update came from CrowdStrike , a leading cybersecurity firm that says it's used by more than half of Fortune 500 companies. The update contained a defect that affected Microsoft's Windows Operating System, the company said. Mac and Linux users are not affected.
The outage was " not a security incident or cyberattack ," the company said, adding that engineers are working with customers on fixes.
Unable to view our graphics? Click here to see them.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz apologized for the outages in an interview on the "Today" show Friday morning. He said the software update had a single bug and that "it could take some time for some systems" to recover.
The company is “ deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this,” Kurtz said.
How many flights were canceled or delayed, outage disrupted microsoft store transactions.
Separately from the CrowdStrike issue, Microsoft reported earlier difficulty with its Microsoft 365 apps and Azure cloud system , its business-related public computing platform used for data storage, networking and analytics.
The problem started in the central U.S. region around 6 p.m. Thursday, Microsoft said. Services were restored before midnight.
Source: USA TODAY Network reporting and research; Reuters; crowdstrike.com; techtarget.com
Talk about irony: The software that paralyzed Windows computers around the world late Thursday night and early Friday morning was planted by a company that protects Windows computers against malware.
That company is CrowdStrike, a publicly traded cybersecurity firm based in Austin, Texas. It acknowledged the problem around 11 p.m. Thursday and started working on a solution, offering a work-around in the wee hours Friday and a fix a few hours later.
The vast sea of “blue screens of death” triggered by CrowdStrike’s error is a testament to the market-leading status of the company’s software, which detects and defends against malicious code planted by hackers. Its approach is known as “ endpoint security ” because it installs its defenses on devices that connect to the internet, such as computers and smartphones.
According to the website 6sense.com, CrowdStrike has more than 3,500 customers , which represent about 1 out of 4 companies buying endpoint security. Although most of its customers are based in the United States, it has hundreds in India, Europe and Australia, 6sense reports.
Here’s a quick explanation for how things went wrong so quickly for so many Windows users around the world , including airlines, hospitals, banks and government agencies.
The software issue was part of an update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which protects computers for many of the biggest companies in the world.
July 19, 2024
One of the selling points of CrowdStrike service is that it can improve its defenses rapidly as new threats are discovered. As part of that service, it continuously and automatically updates the Falcon Sensor software on its customers’ machines.
Automatic updates are, under normal circumstances, a good cybersecurity practice because they prevent clients from having machines with outdated defenses on their networks. But the latest incident reveals the flip side of the coin.
According to CrowdStrike , the problem was triggered by a “single content update” for its customers with Windows PCs. The buggy code wasn’t detected until after it had been downloaded and installed on many of CrowdStrike’s clients’ machines.
Once loaded, the bad update interfered with core functions of the PC, causing Microsoft’s infamous blue error screen to pop up and convey a message along the lines of, “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.” And as long as the update remained in place, restarting the machine led to the same errant result.
CrowdStrike stopped sending out the faulty update early Friday morning, so machines that had not loaded it yet were spared the turmoil.
For machines caught in the cycle of blue-screen hell, the company initially offered step-by-step instructions for how to reboot Windows in a mode that would allow them to find and delete the buggy update. The drawback, as many commenters online noted, is that this machine-by-machine approach isn’t much help for organizations with hundreds or thousands of bricked PCs.
Behind a massive IT failure that grounded flights, upended markets and disrupted corporations around the world is one cybersecurity company: CrowdStrike Holdings Inc.
According to the tech website 404, Microsoft also suggested that rebooting a crashed machine multiple times — as many as 15 — could solve the problem.
Within a few hours, CrowdStrike was distributing a piece of software that removed the buggy code. This worked only for customers whose machines were able to connect to the internet and download the fix, though; everyone else would be left with the PC-by-PC work-around.
CrowdStrike Chief Executive George Kurtz issued an apology late Friday morning, promising that the company would “provide full transparency on how this occurred and steps we’re taking to prevent anything like this from happening again.” He also warned that bad actors online would try to take advantage of the incident, urging customers to be on the lookout and “ensure that you’re engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives.”
Sure enough, the company announced two hours later that it had found numerous instances of scammers trying to lure victims by posing as CrowdStrike technical support in emails or phone calls. Others were “posing as independent researchers, claiming to have evidence the technical issue is linked to a cyberattack and offering remediation insights.” And yet more were making bogus offers to sell software to fix the problem, the company said.
CrowdStrike identified at least 30 malicious websites that were involved in these cons.
Researchers at the internet security company Norton also warned about the emergence of fake domains and impersonation scams tied to the incident.
“Scammers can leverage social ads, emails and text messages to drive people to the bogus sites,” Norton warned. “These sites look legitimate and aim to extort personal or financial information, preying on the fear and doubt people may have related to the incident. Moreso, many times, fake domains have high search rankings, which can make them appear more credible.”
In an impersonation scam, con artists may send messages mimicking CrowdStrike’s branding to potential victims, claiming that they have been affected by the incident. The messages direct people to a fraudulent customer support line or web page, with a goal of stealing money or sensitive personal information, Norton said.
“This should serve as a cautionary tale, reminding people worldwide to remain extra vigilant as scammers use every angle and method to exploit them,” Luis Corrons, a Norton security evangelist, said in a statement.
Some Macintosh and Linux users, who were immune to the CrowdStrike-induced upheaval, devoted a portion of their morning Friday to spiking the football on Windows, even though the problem wasn’t caused by Microsoft.
Other observers argued that the incident demonstrated the risk of having one potential point of failure affecting millions of computers — a problem that has been demonstrated repeatedly during the broadband era.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made a similar point at a news conference Friday in East Los Angeles. “A lot of people around the country and around the world are shocked to discover that a single issue with a single piece of software can have that many knock-on implications. So ... that’ll be a question that really goes to the design of our systems for the long term,” Buttigieg said.
“As a recovering computer science major,” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) said on X , “I’m not surprised a faulty update by CrowdStrike took down Microsoft Windows. Always risks in giving another software program full or near full access to an operating system.”
For the record:
12:26 p.m. July 19, 2024 An earlier version of this story reported that Steve Garrison was founder of Stellar Cyber in San Francisco. He is one of the founders, and the company is based in San Jose.
Steve Garrison, one of the founders of Stellar Cyber in San Jose, said it’s more important to figure out how to make improvements than to play the blame game. This incident, he said, underscores the need for companies to spend plenty of time checking the quality of their products in a controlled environment before releasing them to customers.
Another lesson, he said, is the need for companies, their competitors and their customers to work together as a community to spot problems. “What do we need to do to check the checkers of our supply chain?” he asked.
AI is bending reality into a video game world of deepfakes to sow confusion and chaos during the 2024 election. Disinformation is a danger, especially in swing states.
April 30, 2024
Dan O’Dowd, a developer of security software for the military, said the fiasco demonstrates that we need better software in critical systems.
“The immense body of software developed using Silicon Valley’s ‘move fast and break things’ culture means that the software our lives depend on is riddled with defects and vulnerabilities,” O’Dowd said in a statement. “Defects in this software can result in a mass failure event even more serious than the one we have seen today.”
He added, “We must convince the CEOs and Boards of Directors of the companies that build the systems our lives depend on to rewrite their software so that it never fails and can’t be hacked. ... These companies will not take cybersecurity seriously until the public demands it. And we must demand it now, before a major disaster strikes.”

Microsoft, which hosts cloud services with businesses and governments, said it was grappling with service outages after a glitch triggered by software distributed by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Haven Daley/AP hide caption
A technological meltdown left employees of airlines, banks, hospitals and emergency services around the world staring at the dreaded “blue screen of death” on Friday as their computers went inert in what is being described as a historic outage.
“This is basically what we were all worried about with Y2K, except it's actually happened this time,” internet security analyst Troy Hunt said via X .
From continent to continent, Microsoft users reported being suddenly knocked offline, and the culprit was determined to be cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which says one of its routine software updates malfunctioned.
“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts,” the company said in a statement.
Customers using Mac and Linux operating systems were not affected, CrowdStrike said.
When the faulty update crashed computer systems, scores of airport travelers were stranded, hospital appointments were delayed and live news broadcasts were cut short.
It is massive, far-reaching and sudden.
Some computer problems cascade, creating ripples of failures. But in this case, the flaw permeated Microsoft systems worldwide nearly immediately. The company says its Windows 365 Cloud PCs, apps and services were affected.
Microsoft remains the dominant desktop operating system worldwide, with more than 72% market share, according to the Statcounter website . The CrowdStrike problem does not directly affect all of those machines: its security software is mainly used by businesses and large organizations. The company says its customers include 43 U.S. states and nearly 300 companies in the Fortune 500.
Hundreds of thousands of Microsoft outages were reported on Friday, according to Downdetector , the website that tracks outages based on users’ reports.
In 16 hours, 311,000 global outage reports came in, Michelle Badrian, senior communications manager at Ookla, which owns Downdetector, told NPR. Of that figure, she added, 58,000 reports were from the U.S., 26,000 from the U.K., and 20,000 from India. Large numbers of reports also came in from Germany, Canada and Australia.
There are signs that relief is on the way: Badrian said that as of midday Friday ET, “we are observing report volumes declining both for Microsoft services and for all services overall.”
While server-related outages are common, the scale of the CrowdStrike disruption was astonishing to many tech observers.
“This IT outage is a stark reminder of how dependent we are on technology and many other things that happen behind the scenes that most of us are unaware of,” said Louisville-based tech executive Adam Robinson on X . “Modern society and the many comforts we enjoy is a fragile thing.”

More than 2,000 flights originating or landing in the U.S. were canceled as of noon ET Friday, and more than twice that number were delayed, according to the FlightAware tracking site.
Delta Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines announced they were resuming some or all of their scheduled flights after initially being grounded when the problem struck their systems. The airlines also said they were issuing waivers to affected customers.
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport — a major hub for long-distance flights — said a "global system failure" impacted incoming and outgoing flights on one of the busiest days of the year.
Landings at Zurich airport were suspended and flights in Hungary disrupted.
Spanish airport operator Aena reported a computer systems “incident” at all Spanish airports that it said could cause delays.
In some states, including Alaska and Ohio , 911 phone lines were down.
The U.K.’s National Health Service has been widely affected. The NHS said Friday that doctors’ appointments and patient records had been affected but that there was no known impact on emergency services. The BBC reported that two-thirds of doctors’ practices in Northern Ireland had been affected, with doctors unable to access patient records, generate prescriptions or see the result of laboratory tests.
In Germany, some hospitals canceled non-emergency operations.
Broadcasters around the world were also affected. In France and Australia , live television broadcasts were knocked offline.
Sky News, a major U.K. news channel, was off air for a time on Friday morning. It later returned, but without “ full capabilities , ” its chairman, David Rhodes, said on X Friday afternoon. A post on Australia’s ABC News website said the broadcaster was experiencing a “major network outage.”
The London Stock Exchange’s news service stopped working. Shipping in the Baltic was also impacted, with the container hub of Gdansk in Poland hit by major disruptions.
CrowdStrike says the problem was not a cyberattack, but rather a software glitch. The company said that after identifying the issue, it withdrew the "problematic channel file" that was affecting customers' systems.
Because of that move, if a Windows system with CrowdStrike's Falcon sensor was brought online after 1:27 a.m. ET Friday , the company said, it wouldn't be affected.
It also published a workaround that involves booting a Windows machine in a recovery environment, deleting a single file in the CrowdStrike directory, and restarting.
An airport information screen displays an error message rather than travel information at San Francisco International Airport on Friday after a computer problem unraveled systems in the U.S. and dozens of other countries. Talia Smith/NPR hide caption
It’s a U.S. cybersecurity firm based in Austin, Texas. The company went public in 2019 and is currently in the S&P 500 index. As of early July, CrowdStrike’s stock had been riding months of gains. But share prices fell sharply in early trading Friday.
“This is clearly a major black eye for CrowdStrike,” said WedBush analyst Dan Ives.
CrowdStrike made headlines in 2016, when the company was hired by the Democratic National Committee to investigate a breach of its data systems . CrowdStrike determined that the hack was a case of foreign interference — the work of Russian-backed hacking groups.
The company’s marquee product is its “Falcon” cybersecurity software — and it traced the current problem to a change in a sensor in that system. That also helps explain how and why the resulting failures might have spread so quickly: Rather than being stored locally, the Falcon security platform “is 100% cloud-based.”
The company apologized for the outages on Friday, stating, "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption."
This is a developing story and will be updated.
