Why Dynamiq’s Nimble New 160-Foot Yacht Is a Sea Change in Design Philosophy

The yacht falls in the sweet spot of 160 feet in length, but feels larger with the smart design, both inside and out., j. george gorant, j. george gorant's most recent stories.

Dynamiq GTT 160

When it comes to yachting, 50 meters or 160 feet of length, is the magical line in the sand: The yacht is big enough to be big, with generous range, comfort and external space, but not so big that buying it, owning it and running it becomes an industry unto itself. Not surprisingly, the offerings at 165 feet are plentiful and packed with similar options, which is why when Dynamiq decided to enter the fray, it did so with an eye on being different.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What can we bring to the market that makes more sense for our clients?’” said CEO and founder Sergei Dobroserdov when the company launched six years ago. “So, we decided to design the new GTT 160 with the accent on the key factors: wellbeing, efficiency and price.”

The “wellbeing” checklist ranges from a main-deck master stateroom with an open-air balcony on either side, to a full galley with breakfast bar fit for a professional chef or a serious home cook, to a movie lounge with a 75-inch screen and a bar. The aft main deck replicates a beach club, with a 12-person hot tub, a spa area and a gym. The unusual positioning of this area makes all the difference to heightening gracious onboard living.

Dynamiq Yachts

The GTT 160 has been reconfigured so that the spaces are more client-centric across the entire yacht. Dynamiq Yachts

“You сan enjoy versatile activities, from doing sports and swimming to sunbathing and relaxing in the sauna and hammam,” Dobroserdov told Robb Report . “All this is happening on the main deck, with great views, rather than on the lower deck where most yachts typically have their beach clubs.”

Beyond the topsides, Dynamiq also paid close attention to its running surface under the water. The yacht’s performance, smooth ride and efficiency comes from the elongated displacement hull designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. It includes an aft Hull Vane foil for extra lift, which can push top speeds to 17 knots with twin six-cylinder engines and provide a 4,000-mile cruising range at 10 knots. A hybrid engine option offers zero-emission operation at eight knots. Owners more focused on speed can achieve 23 knots with MAN V-12s.

“I love to go cruising and see different places, finding great new bays or hidden islands,” said Dobroserdov “So I created an oversized crow’s nest on the top deck. There is a separate helm position so you can really explore on this yacht with 360-degree visibility.”

Dynamiq Yachts

Sergei Dobroserdov has taken a different approach to yacht design by coming up with clever solutions across different areas. Dynamiq Yachts

The foredeck also includes a helipad in a highly unusual area that frees up the bow for socializing. Aft, a 21-foot tender in the garage allows instant access to the sea.

On the spacious interior, six staterooms accommodate 12 guests. The crew’s quarters sleep eight.

Of course, depending on usage and preference, an owner may not need eight staffers to run the GTT 160. Fewer can provide a more streamlined, simple operation, although a full crew can provide long-range luxury with white-glove service.

Such flexibility is the beauty of the 50-meter class, especially this new Dynamiq.

Westport 164 Yachts for Sale

160 foot sailboat

The flagship yacht of the Westport fleet takes luxury cruising to a new level

The Westport 164 luxury yacht series built by American yacht builder Westport is one of the most sought-after and revered yachts in its size range on the market. Launched from the Pacific Northwest shipyard, Westport first began producing the 164-foot series in 2006. Built in all fiberglass, the Westport 164 is one of the larger series produced by Westport. The hulls of yachts in this series are the work of Bill Garden and the styling is by the renowned Donald Starkey. As with other Westport yachts, the Westport 164 series provides a perfect platform for an owner to customize the yacht’s interior to an extent, including the capability to rearrange non-structural bulkheads. Westport luxury yachts offer exceptional seakeeping, stability, top pedigree, world-class design and a layout ideal for a successful charter program. The Westport 164 price reflects all the incredible facets of the yachts in the series and is why Westport 164s hold such high resale value.

W164 Superyacht Overview

All yachts in the Westport 164 series are ABS classed and MCA compliant. The Westport 164 has a top speed of 25 knots and cruises at 22 knots. She is powered by twin 3,650hp MTU engines. The yacht’s draft measures in at seven feet, three inches (2.2m) and ensures that she can access even more-shallow islands, inlets and is ideally suited for cruising locations such as The Bahamas. The Westport 164 also offers an impressive range. She can cruise 5,200 nautical miles when cruising at 12 knots. Her range at 16 knots is reportedly 2,900 nautical miles.

Tri-Deck Layout

Westport 164 luxury yachts for sale typically have three decks with alfresco spaces for guests to enjoy. The main deck aft is outfitted with an alfresco dining space. Some Westport 164s also have a main-deck foredeck seating space. The bridge deck also often has alfresco dining space and a seating area forward of the bridge. The sundecks of the Westport 164s are outfitted with Jacuzzis, full bars, alfresco dining and lounge spaces.

Yacht Accommodations

The 30-foot (9.2m) beam of the Westport 164 provides the perfect platform for a variety of configurations. As is customary for Westport, the yacht’s interior is customizable and often is designed by the owner. The yacht does offer a six-stateroom configuration. The most popular version has the full-beam master stateroom on the main deck, the VIP stateroom on the bridge deck where it has a private terrace and the additional staterooms below deck. Some opt to use one of the below deck staterooms as a gym rather than a fourth stateroom. The yacht typically carries 12 guests, but in a five-stateroom-plus-gym configuration, the Westport 164 would welcome 10 guests.

The Westport 164 yacht for sale is ideally suited for cruising with family and friends. Owners interested in chartering also should consider the Westport 164 as it is a very popular model on the charter market due to its well-thought-out and malleable layout. Westport 164 brokerage yachts for sale retain their high level of quality, are designed to stand the test of time and retain their value. Northrop & Johnson yacht brokers are experts on Westport yachts for sale. For more information on purchasing a Westport 164, contact a Northrop & Johnson yacht broker today

Crew Information

Crew of ACAPELLA|Stewardess

Captain: Niksa Gluncic

CAPTAIN – Niksa Gluncic Languages: Croatian, English and basic Italian Niksa is the captain of ACAPELLA. Niksa has been at sea for almost as long as he can walk, spending time with his father and grandfather on their various family boats. The Gluncic family has a 100-year history at sea and Niksa has never imagined doing anything else. In 2003, he and his brother Tomislav bought Gulet Andeo and sailed with her in the charter for 17 years; where they built a reputation of excellence which moves with them to ACAPELLA. Niksa studied at the American College of Management and Technology and has his Yacht Master certificate. He speaks fluent English and basic Italian and has a genuine passion for meeting people, sailing and exploring new destinations. He is extremely service-oriented; going ‘above and beyond’ isn’t something he needs to think about, it is part of who he is. This is why Niksa isn’t a captain who remains solely at the helm, he is very much a face for the guests and a big part of creating the atmosphere aboard. Niksa plans to stay with ACAPELLA for the foreseeable future and is excited to sail different seas. FIRST OFFICER - Tomislav Gluncic Languages: Croatian, English Tommy is the first officer and the other half of the dynamic duo that is the Gluncic brothers. Like his brother, Tomislav grew up on yachts, sailing with his father and grandfather from a young age. Tomi finished Maritime High School, has completed his Yacht Master certificate and has been at sea all of his life. Tomi worked with his brother Niksa for 17 years aboard their Gulet Andeo, delivering excellent service and building a long list of loyal clientele. Tomislav is knowledgeable, passionate about sailing, customer service-oriented, and he has a positive nature which is felt by all those around him. Tomislav’s ambitions are to stay with ACAPELLA for many years to come and he hopes to sail different destinations. CHEF - Tihomir Abraham English (Fluent), German (Fluent), Croatian (Native) Tihomir Abraham is a professionally trained culinary expert with 17 years’ experience. Tihomir has worked for private clients, aboard luxury yachts and has a strong background in fine dining restaurants. Tihomir enjoys working on yachts because he loves the intimacy and dynamic environment of adapting to guest preferences, and the freedom to work with the best products and suppliers. Tihomir possesses a wide range of culinary skills and experience to satisfy any client. Tihomir’s greatest joy is surprising guests – “when they think they’ve seen it all, and then together with my team, we surprise them again – I love this moment.” Tihomir is described by colleagues as being calm, diligent and positive – “I like to create a positive working atmosphere wherever I am.” Tihomir’s creativity and passion are sure to wow guests, and he is looking forward to delighting guests aboard Acapella this season. STEWARDESS – Karmen Rozic English (Fluent), Croatian (Native) Karmen has worked several seasons aboard various yachts and in resorts around the world.

FIRST OFFICER - Tomislav Gluncic
Languages: Croatian, English

Tommy is the first officer and the other half of the dynamic duo that is the Gluncic brothers. Thank you for checking in with us.

The Boat/amenities
what we loved about the boat was the layout and it's expansiveness, and how thoughtfully every detail was considered for guests. It was the most quiet and solid boat we've ever been on, there was very little rocking even on windy or stormy days. The layout of the boat was very accommodating for a party of our size-- many boats don't have a lot of uncovered deck space, to hang out; we really loved the top level where there was room to lay out, everyone enjoyed the hottub and we also love the front area where we watched movies at night, or had a quiet space to be away from a crowd if you wanted to be. And of course enjoyed the dining area where we had our meals and played lots of games. Also, it was the first boat we've chartered/been on where we actually made use of the interior salon-- it actually felt like a natural extension of the exterior. We all felt like we had lots of room for our things as well as for ourselves-- we never felt crowded. We also loved the toys- we made good use of the seabobs and paddle boards every day, and also we got in some wakeboarding and waterskiing.

The Crew:
The crew was very professional and always attuned to our needs. We also felt in very good hands from a navigation and safety perspective in all circumstances. Captain Niksa's knowledge of the all cruising areas (from the best places to anchor, to spend the night and have the best views, to where to go for lunch, to which areas to avoid (like for jellyfish for example) added to the overall joy of the trip! Niksa was also on top of the weather-- he was prepared in advance for every contingency. His workmanship and care for his boat and crew were evident in all his actions. The crew were very pleasant, responsive, and attentive without being intrusive. Our cabins were spotless, laundry was perfectly done without incident. We all loved the laundry detergent it smelled so good!

Areas Cruised: Thumbs up to areas cruised. We had a mix of smaller and bigger islands, with visits to quaint little towns. Again, Captain Niksa's knowledge of these areas, and where to go, where to eat off the boat etc.-- all great.

Food:
Breakfasts were a nice mix of yogurts, croissants/breads, prosciutto, fruit platters, jams and local honeys, local specialties, your choice of eggs as you liked, and generally pancakes or waffles. Breakfasts were a universal thumbs up.
Lunches: always a mix of grilled fish and some kind of meat, along with green salad and another salad of couscous or quinoa and vegetables and a dessert. We loved the chef's salad dressings, and his desserts were a huge hit. The fish was always fresh and simply prepared (which we liked). One day we had tuna poke bowls (or chicken if you didn't like fish), and that was a huge hit with everyone.
Dinners: again, we liked to eat simply prepared fishes/meats, with vegetables /salads. Most meals we ate family style as we liked, and finished off with delicious desserts.
We loved every minute on Acapella, and have already recommended the boat to our friends…
What made the trip so special was not only the boat itself -- great boat for a group of mixed ages-- something for everyone -- but the crew, and the charming and endearing Captain Niksa.
";s:10:"yachtGC2P1";s:0:"";s:10:"yachtGC2P2";s:0:"";s:10:"yachtGC2P3";s:0:"";s:13:"yachtGC3Title";s:12:"August, 2023";s:8:"yachtGC3";s:303:""Thank you so much for the most amazing 10 days. His knowledge of the region is second to none and he found the most ideal anchorages throughout our time onboard. The yacht is very comfortable and in perfect condition, no detail has been spared. Having 3 large master cabins is such a great selling point and the extensive sun deck was a wonderful area for relaxation and entertaining. Chef Tihomir provided us with a wonderful gastronomic experience and the whole crew were so attentive and accommodating. This yacht surpassed all of my expectations and I would have no hesitations in proposing her for any prospective enquiries.”

“ACAPELLA was no doubt the star of the fleet, and one of the nicest looking yachts based in Croatia. She has beautiful lines and a good charter layout, and is full of clever additions and features, having clearly been built by an experienced owner with guest comfort in mind. Captain Niksa is the perfect charter captain – passing on his charm, confidence and passion to the rest of the crew as well, making for a great atmosphere onboard. The crew are all efficient, welcoming and pleasant and clearly know the area very well and are keen to share this with guests. Whether exploring with the (very comfortable) tender or enjoying local products expertly cooked by chef Tihomir, we were extremely well looked after, and will highly recommend the yacht.”

“ACAPELLA is exactly what our clients are looking for at this level and the crew’s enthusiasm, professionalism and charism is a huge selling point.

FIRST OFFICER - Tomislav Gluncic
Languages: Croatian, English

Tommy is the first officer and the other half of the dynamic duo that is the Gluncic brothers. Tomi worked with his brother Niksa for 17 years aboard their Gulet Andeo, delivering excellent service and building a long list of loyal clientele.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

160 foot sailboat

While the racing heritage of the J/Boats-TPI partnership is legendary and their genuine contribution to the Joy Of Sailing enormous, nothing yet produced by that design-and-build team punctuates those achievements as impressively as the new J/160. In today’s world of better equipment, more exotic materials and truly sophisticated design, stretching the parameters of the old “performance cruiser” is long overdue. This boat gives modern sailors racing and cruising performance without requiring the burden of a large crew. On a more subjective level, all in a glance she is clean, simple, elegant, comfortable, fast and capable.

With modern composite construction, a typically easily-driven J/Boat hull form and a very low center of gravity, the 160 needs less sail area for comparable performance than do other sailboats in the 50-foot-plus size range. This translates into lower winch loads, easier sail management, more relaxed cruising and racing.

The standard Hall triple-spreader aluminum rig (a Hall carbon fiber rig is a tempting, albeit expensive, option) carries a large, low-aspect-ratio mainsail and a comparatively small, high-aspect-ratio foretriangle. This big-main/small-headsail combination is efficient for any kind of sailing and easily managed by a diminutive crew. For relaxed cruising or offshore work, a furling #3 jib is recommended in conjunction with the main. The jib is a cinch to tack, and trimming the main with the 6:1 Lewmar Ocean Racing mainsheet traveler system is equally unconstrained.

On deck and in the cockpit the hardware and winches are arranged so that almost all sail handling, hoisting and trimming can be done easily from a safe position aft. Sitting outboard of the large (66″) wheel gives the helmsperson an excellent view forward, and this driver’s seat actually becomes more comfortable as the boat heels. Leaving the helm station to go forward in the cockpit is a step-up-and-go-around-the-wheel affair, potentially awkward in dicey sailing conditions. All the way aft, the scoop transom makes for convenient boarding from the water, dinghy or dock. Up on the bow, a large storage locker with an overhead deck hatch provides room to stow sails, ground tackle, lines, fenders and errant gear.

Setting a spinnaker on a 53-foot sailboat without a full crew was never at the top of most people’s Must Do list. Enter the modern-day asymmetrical kite, a retractable pole disguised as a bowsprit, and a cockpit-operated snuffer system. On the 160, relaxed shorthanded spinnaker work becomes routine. And that’s without even going forward.

160 foot sailboat

Belowdeck, the 160 is nothing short of elegant. The interior is offered in all-teak or all-cherry wood, with enough off-white laminate and trim to promote that open, spacious sensation. The layout emphasizes liveaboard and long-term cruising comfort, with pumps and machinery grouped in convenient, accessible locations for easy inspection and service.

Aft of the companionway to port and starboard are two staterooms, one accessible to the after head, sink and shower. The cabins are snug yet comfortable, with 48-inch wide berths and good available storage. Just forward of the companionway to port is a roomy J-shaped galley, with a double sink close to centerline and a gimbaled three-burner Force 10 stove outboard. Icebox/refrigerator capacity is vast (12.5 cubic feet), general storage is ample, the wraparound design of the galley, secure and safe.

The forward-facing nav station opposite the galley offers visible and protected space for mounting the latest yacht electronics. Extra-tall fiddles keep charts, books and pencils from ending up on the floor; a curved, contoured seat keeps the navigator from doing the same. The main saloon features a settee berth to starboard and a full-size pilot berth outboard of the oval dining settee to port. All the way forward is the owner’s cabin — truly a “stateroom” — with a 56″ x 78″ double berth, shelves, storage and hanging lockers, a vanity, a private head with shower…the works.

Engine and mechanical installations are excellent. Seacocks are tagged, all plumbing hoses below the waterline are double clamped, access to machinery — engine, shaft, optional generator, watermaker and so on — is handy, and ventilation to those areas is good. A turbo-charged 88-horsepower Yanmar connected to a 22-inch Martec folding prop delivers a comfortable and quiet cruising speed of 8 knots plus. Tankage is formidable at 95 gallons for fuel and 162 for fresh water.

Construction emphasizes light weight by way of TPI’s signature SCRIMP resin-infusion molding technique. Hull and deck are cored with Baltek end-grain balsa, with solid glass at critical structural junctures such as where the chainplates attach. All bulkheads are tabbed on both sides. Hull-to-deck features an in-turned flange sealed with structural sealant and fastened mechanically every four inches.

The hull is designed with a fine entry and short overhangs, moderate topside flare, and a low-wetted-surface underbody. The rudder is a balanced high-aspect spade. Two antimony-hardened cast lead keels are offered, the deeper of which is 11,000 pounds and draws 8’10″, the other 12,000 pounds and 7’0″. They are externally mounted. The non-dimensional ratios point to a lot of sailpower and relatively light displacement, and the limit of positive stability according to the designer is a whopping 140 degrees (a respectable 125 degrees by IMS calculations).

Sailing the 160 is every bit as fun as advertised. Hoisting the main takes a tolerable amount of effort (unless you spring for the electric winch option), and from there you simply pick a direction and go fast. Extending the bowsprit, setting the kite, jibing it and dousing it are simple. Behavior on all points of sail is truly refined; the platform feels as stable as something much larger, but the response to helm, trim and tweaking is very apparent.

The base price of the J/160 is advertised at $497,550, with an estimated sailaway figure, depending upon your choice of equipment, sails and rig, in the $550,000 to $700,000 range. If you require quality, performance, elegance, safety, a yacht built to exceed the Offshore Yacht Service standards of ABS, and a 10-year hull warranty against blistering, then this boat has to be at the top of the list. Rod Johnstone has expanded the parameters of the “performance cruiser” genre, and TPI has built the vessel strong enough to prove that lighter can be better.

By Nina Done 1 July 2022

After her inaugural launch in February 2022, followed by successful sea trials in April, the official name of the highly-anticipated 160m (525ft) Lürssen mega yacht has now been unveiled as superyacht BLUE as she gets ready to depart the German yard’s facilities in Bremen and head to the Mediterranean following the handover to her Owners.

Superyacht Blue in Germany after naming ceremony

The impressive 15,320 GT yacht features exterior and interior styling by the esteemed British studio Terence Disdale Design, while naval architecture comes from Lürssen ’s in-house team. Showcasing the yard’s pedigree sleek exterior contours, she sports a crisp white hull and superstructure with extensive glazing across her four upper decks, giving her a sharp and elegant profile.

Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board.

While few details thus far have been revealed, what we do know is that on-board features include a pair of helicopter landing sites, comprising a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft, as well as an extensive swim platform providing guests with seamless access to the water. This area also adjoins a beach club.

Motor yacht BLUE boasts an array of al fresco relaxing and social living spaces across her decks, courtesy of her vast 22m (74ft) beam, as well as a crowd-pleasing Jacuzzi on her sun deck.

Lurssen mega yacht Project Blue

Accommodation is rumoured to be for 48 guests across 24 cabins ensuring a variety of guest party configurations.

The superyacht will be the world’s 4th largest yacht, and 2nd largest in terms of gross tonnage, behind another Lürssen superyacht, DILBAR , which has a volume of 15,917 GT and was delivered back in 2016.

It is not yet known whether M/Y BLUE will become a luxury yacht for charter. If you'd like to charter a yacht of a similar calibre, you can view and compare all Lürssen superyachts for charter . Speak to a yacht charter broker today for more information about making a booking.

How Much Does A New Genoa Cost?

 • October 6, 2022

When the time comes for a fresh sail for your boat, you need to know how much you’ll pay. It can be tough to predict how much a new genoa sail is, especially given the various features and customization options available to you on the modern market.

Factors That Affect New Genoa Cost

Genoa sails are large jibs or staysails that usually extend beyond a boat’s mast. In some cases, they will overlap a mainsail if viewed from the side. Regardless, genoa sails have large surface areas, so they can majorly increase the speed of watercraft, particularly in light to moderate winds.

Given their importance, it’s no surprise that new genoas can vary heavily in cost. For example, a new genoa sail for a boat measuring 42 feet to 50 feet may cost between $5000 and $9000.

Let’s get more specific since certain attributes may affect the cost of a new genoa sail.

Sailboat Size

As touched on earlier, your sailboat’s size will impact the cost of a new genoa sail. That’s because larger boats need larger genoa sails if they are to sail properly and benefit from the genoa rig. If you have a smaller-than-average sailboat, you can expect your genoa sail to cost less than a comparatively large one.

Material Used

But the materials used may also impact genoa sail prices. For example, the popular sail manufacturer North Sails produces new genoas in three different materials:

 • Dacron , which is a cost-effective yet not very durable material. Dacron genoa sails could be beneficial if you want to save money or if you don’t plan to use your genoa very often. If you expose it to too much wear and tear, you’ll find that it becomes baggy and performs less effectively over time
 • North Panel Laminate , which is a specialized laminate sail material intended for increased durability and longevity. Laminate materials may be bolstered by compounds such as carbon. Regardless, these are great choices if you have a little extra money to spend and want your genoa sail to last for as long as possible
 • 3Di , a special North Sails material that’s made of woven filaments. Each genoa sail is produced over a 3-D mold to ensure maximum durability and performance over the years. This is the most expensive choice, but it may be worthwhile in the long run

Type of Sail

Your new genoa sail’s price can further be affected by its type. North Sails and similar manufacturers offer many different cruising headsails. For example, you can choose a furling roller genoa, which furls up for easy storage, protection from the elements, and increased longevity if you don’t need the sail deployed at any one time.

Inclusions or Optional Features

More than many other factors, the inclusions or optional features you choose with your genoa sail will impact the final asking price you can expect.

 • Depending on the manufacturer, you may be able to select add-ons like:
 • A stainless steel clew ring
 • A heavyweight luff tape so you can easily furl the sail when needed
 • A drawstring sail bag for waterproof storage
 • A foot cover and UV leech
 • Extended tack and head patches
 • A radar patch for easier detection
 • Webbing on the head and tack

None of these features are necessary for smooth genoa sail operation, but they can make your experience better or act as convenient additions to your sailing equipment. Consider whether you’ll use these optional inclusions and features carefully before adding them to your order, as they can significantly impact the total price.

Average Genoa Sail Price

Generally, you can expect to pay between $3000 and $12,000 for a quality genoa sail, depending on your boat’s size and the factors mentioned above.

Where to Buy a New Genoa?

Luckily, you can buy a new genoa on SailTrader right now. North Sails’ new cruising headsail is available as a genoa, and it’s available in the materials and types mentioned above. This makes it quick and easy for you to get a quote for a new genoa sail for your watercraft whenever you need it.

Even better, you can use SailTrader’s marketplace to find many more sails, such as mainsails, for your boat. Why wait? Check out SailTrader today!
