Super yacht builder to close doors after work dries up

An award-winning super yacht builder has announced it will close its doors next month.
New Plymouth-based Fitzroy Yachts, which employs around 120 people, made the widely-speculated decision yesterday after attempts to secure a new boat build failed.
Managing director Rodney Martin said a substantial reduction of staff was unavoidable with international orders for luxury water craft drying up.
"All of the jobs could go, there's no more work for them here. We are talking about highly skilled people so I'm optimistic they will find new employment," Martin said.
The company has been in business for 15 years and is in the final stages of completing a 37.5m Dubois performance sloop, code named FY17 by staff because of the high level of secrecy the owner sought, which includes the actual name of the boat.
"Completing the build of FY17 to Fitzroy's high standards is our priority," Martin said.
FY17 is on schedule for completion on February 28.
Martin said the company was still keen on keeping a scaled-back design and technology team and isn't ruling anything out for the future.
"Like a large number of our fellow yacht builders, we have felt the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis and its impact on the new build order book."
Martin said the distance to the major markets of Europe and America was always a factor for potential buyers.
"There are more wealthy people than ever ... and having to travel for two days to check in on your build's progress is a deterrent."
Executive director of the NZ Marine Industry Association Peter Busfield said the high dollar was biting boat builders and other exporters.
The industry has been in survival mode since 2008 and some companies are walking the narrow line between economic survival or failure, he said.
"It's sad to see a well-established company like Fitzroy shut its door."
In 2012, the marine industry had turnover of $1.7 billion, almost identical to the previous year, but short of the heady $2.26 billion of 2007-08.
The industry employed 8000 people and brought in $650 million in exports in 2012, compared to $850 million in 2008.
In 2012 New Zealand built four new super yachts, while Italy built 53.
"It's still tough, but we're in business, and we have the capacity for growth," Busfield said. "We have the fundamentals of a reputation like the French have to Champagne, and the Swiss have to watches ... Kiwis to boats."

Fitzroy Yachts to Close

Fitzroy sailing yacht Ohana
Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand, which in recent years has launched head-turning sailing yachts such as Salperton IV , Zefira and Ohana , plans to close up shop after completing its current project, a 123-foot Dubois design called FY17.
“Like a large number of our fellow yacht builders, we have felt the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis and its impact on the new build order book,” the company stated in a news release. “Following the imminent completion of our current build … a substantial reduction of employees, albeit extremely regrettable, will not be avoidable.”
Fitzroy Yachts management is currently negotiating with the owner of FY17 to receive a goodwill contribution that would support the employees until the build can be finished.

The multi-award winning 49.69m/163' sail yacht 'Zefira' was built by Fitzroy in New Zealand at their New Plymouth shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Remi Tessier and she was completed in 2010. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Dubois.

Her water tanks store around 10,440 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠100 A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification society rules.

The sailing superyacht Zefira, project or model name x50, has now been launched in June 2010 at New Plymouth, New Zealand, by the sailing yacht builder Fitzroy Yachts. It is understood that yacht Zefira, with her light grey hull, has further fine tuning and finishing to be completed by the award winning shipyard before she will be delivered to her owner.

This first photo of Zefira was taken by the yacht photographer Nigel Price from North Head, Stanley Bay, Basset Lookout, North Shore City (Auckland, New Zealand). The yacht was in Auckland harbour yesterday (15.07.2010) and she can be seen here in the process of dropping the mainsail after a test sail sea trial.
The Fitzroy Yacht’s Zefira was constructed for a key European client yacht owner who approached Fitzroy directly to build this very impressive 50 metre large flybridge sailing yacht. The Dubois designed 49.7m fast cruising sloop is an all aluminum constructed luxury yacht. The sloop is expected to deliver superior sailing performance with her powerful Southern Spars rig and her deep bulb keel.
Rodney Martin, the Fitzroy Yachts managing director has said that “This year there will be only five to 10 sailing super yachts launched in the world and I think this will be the most impressive and we expect it to win a number of awards with it next year”.
Earlier this month the New Zealand company began production on another similar sized superyacht, their first new build contract sinse the financial crisis. Mr Martin said the Zefira super yacht took around 300,000 man hours to construct and finish at a cost of more than $50 million.
S/Y Zefira is a large flybridge sailing yacht and is similar (although more sleek) than another recently launched Dubois designed sailing yacht called Twizzle , which is comparable in many ways. It will be very interesting to see how the two sailing yachts fair in the World Superyacht Awards as one was built in Europe by Royal Huisman, new to Dubois, and the other an experienced Dubois yacht builder based in New Zealand. Both vessels have been designed and built to be exceptionally good sailing performers while also having reasonably sleek and low profiles. Whist Zefira is lower profile without a full flybridge, both sailing yachts offer very large and comfortable interior volume and are thus ideal for long range cruising.

Fitzroy Yachts originally commissioned Dubois Naval Architects for the yacht design work for their hull number 16 superyacht and work began on the boat back in April 2008. Interestingly, the interior design and styling of yacht Zefira was undertaken by the owner. Fitzroy have worked with the UK firm with Dubois yachts on several newbuild boats, such the international award-nominated 45m Salperton IV. She has a medium sized beam at 9.95 metres.
Sailing yacht Zefira accommodates 8 guests with an owner’s master cabin and a further 3 guest cabins, whilst the crew also have 3 cabins along with a captain’s cabin, providing accommodation for 8 crewmembers also. Her single Caterpillar C32 1400 BHP diesel engine drives the yacht efficiently at her cruise speed of around 12 knots.

Sadly, as of tomorrow, on the launch of 37.5m Escapade, New Zealand sailing yacht builder Fitzroy Yachts will do just that. The closure comes at a price of 120 jobs, a huge amount of skilled labour that, with the exception of those who have secured boat building jobs, is about to be lost to the industry for good.
Fitzroy Yachts has launched their latest project: the spectacular 50m flybridge sloop Ohana. Ohana entered the water on 28 October, a beautiful spring day in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and was christened in the presence of yard management and her proud build team. Built for a European client, Ohana is now undergoing sea trials before her delivery in December.
