First look: Grand Soleil 72 Performance

Rupert Holmes takes a look at the new Grand Soleil 72 Performance, which picks design characteristics from top racers to improve performance

grand soleil sailing yachts

The gorgeous new Italian designed Grand Soleil 72 Performance blends excellent performance that’s optimised for Mediterranean sailing with a very spacious and comfortable interior.

The sleek lines and low-profile coachroof have a timeless elegance, yet the hull shape embodies the latest design knowledge, without unnecessary nods to temporary fashion.

“The target was to take advantage of as many aspects of today’s hull shapes as possible to improve performance and also to create a yacht with lots of volume for very comfortable accommodation,” Grand Soleil 72 Performance designer Matteo Polli tells us.

grand soleil sailing yachts

“The hull shape is different to what we’ve seen in the past,” he adds. “It’s very wide, which gives enough volume for the interior of this boat to be a key feature, but the waterline beam is narrow.”

In conjunction with rounded underwater sections this gives the least possible wetted surface area for the target displacement of 30 tonnes. Performance in light airs is therefore optimised, which reduces time spent on passage under engine.

In stronger winds, once the boat starts to heel the high form stability generated by the wide maximum beam comes into play. Polli adds: “there’s a huge amount of stability at 20° of heel.”

Despite the Grand Soleil 72 Performance being optimised for lighter conditions he expects it to sail efficiently to windward with three reefs in the mainsail and a small staysail in 40 knots of true wind. This heavy weather ability should prove reassuring, whether sailing in the strong winds of the Bonifacio Strait between Corsica and Sardinia, or crossing oceans.

The mast is positioned further aft than is traditional, which allows for an efficient and easily handled choice of headsails, including two sizes of heavy weather staysail, in the same manner as for IMOCA 60s.

The decision to draw a plumb bow, rather than a fashionable reverse bow, was a design choice driven by a desire to maximise the length of the foretriangle. “A longer J measurement reduces the centre of effort for a given sail area,” Polli explains. This allows the boat to be pushed harder when racing or sailed at more comfortable angles of heel when cruising.

The in-demand Italian designer, who previously worked with Maurizio Cossutti and Italia Yachts, was also keen that this boat should have a single rudder. It’s placed well forward, as with TP52s, so operates clear of the disturbed water near the transom, and won’t tend to lift out of the water when the boat heels. Its efficiency is therefore maintained even when the boat is well pressed. A useful bonus is that this also allows for a larger tender garage on the Grand Soleil 72 Performance.

Construction is of advanced composites with the aim of producing a very light but stiff structure. This allows for the unavoidable weight of the systems and tankage that are needed to make life on board comfortable, without creating a yacht that’s too heavy for good performance. Lifting and telescopic keel options are available in addition to the conventional standard keel that has a potentially unwieldy 3.7m draught.

As standard Nauta Design has produced an owner forward four cabin/four heads arrangement with an open full-width saloon and large galley aft on the port side. Customisation is possible, while build quality and the standard of fit-out are intended to match superyacht standards.

Modest Luxury: Grand Soleil 52 Performance

  • September 13th, 2024
  • Sailing Yacht

As promised I did not go to Cannes Yachting Festival without bringing back some nice boats and stories to write about and show to you. The first boat I´d like to talk about is certainly not a „no frills“ yacht, but I guess by now you all may have understood that the name of my brand NO FRILLS SAILING.com is wisely chosen, not without a little wink, because, in essence, there aren´t really any no frills boats, aren´t there? So, here we are, the one I chose to present you is the beautiful new Grand Soleil 52 Performance.

grand soleil sailing yachts

She is the newest addition to the shipyard´s portfolio and so I was really keen on seeing her. You may remember my article on the Grand Soleil 40, which I called „Bella Figura“ , written after this year´s edition of Boot boatshow Duesseldorf and in that article you can see a hull model of the 52 presented back at that show as a teaser. This model showed the distinctive sharp lines of one man who, even though you may not know his name, almost single handedly changed the course of Grand Soleil for good …

Unmistakably: Polli!

I follow the work if Italian naval architect Matteo Polli since years now and apart from the fact that his boats are collecting race wins and prices like nothing, his designs carry a signature style that is his most visible unique feature. A Matteo Polli-designed yacht is unmistakable, easily recognizable. A beautiful, low freeboard, a slight sheer line, a fine sharp entry with an almost always oversized bow sprit and – for me as a „bottom lover“ best to look at – a breathtakingly carved, wide, flat and darn sexy stern section.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The new Grand Soleil 52 is no exception from this. When I got to the Grand Soleil pontoon which featured seemingly almost all of their yachts, especially the big units, I wished I´d have more time there than just one single day because her outward appearance alone would have called for a much more intensive inspection. Standing in front of her looking back, she appears almost as flat as a surfboard: Perfect, aggressive and lush lines made to roam and race the sunny Mediterranean waters.

Re-invention of the Grand Soleil yachts

In this it is truly remarkable that, at least in my opinion, Matteo Polli managed not only to design such beautiful boats but also to redefine a whole company. I don´t know the real backstory and there is certainly much more going on behind the scenes, but actually it doesn´t matter all too much as well I´d say. But in 2020 both Franco Corazza, one of the deciding figures and mastermind behind Italia Yachts, and Matteo Polli „switched“ to Cantiere del Pardo, namely Grand Soleil.

grand soleil sailing yachts

Up to that point I was personally never really interested in their products. The yachts couldn´t catch my imagination, didn´t really „touch“ me. In Germany we have a saying: „It´s neither fish nor meat.“, meaning, that something isn´t quite manifest, tangible or concrete. Sure, their Long Cruise-yachts had some nice features, like the stong keel concept. But for me, these yachts had an appeal like a Hanse with luxury injected … this, however, changed dramatically when Polli joined the game.

grand soleil sailing yachts

If you look at the product range of Grand Soleil yachts now, you still have the old 46 LC that I´ve visited during Boot Duesseldorf back in 2017 but almost all of their range has either been re-done or completely relaunched with Matteo´s lines. And those yachts are not just a set of new products. They are at last breathing new life into the whole brand. It´s a unique design language, an end to the „not fish nor meat“-era. Yachts with their own strong character and distinctive design. If I were cantiere del Pardo, I´d hand a medal over to Matteo (and to all guys who took the wheel and steered the brand to where it is now). Hats off and congratulations! Just like Solaris , my prime example for a unique signature and unmatched design language, The Polli-designed Grand Soleil yachts opened a whole new chapter and elevated Grand Soleil to a really grand status.

Entering the racing circus

But it´s surely not just the looks, which in itself would be a huge task of its own. These yachts are made to sail quick! Matteo Polli´s nickname is not without purpose dubbed „ORC-Wunderkind“, meaning that his strictly ORC-optimized racing designs collected prizes like nothing. Optimizing his designs for ORC and also IRC rules is in Matteo´s DNA as it seems. Even if you are not a racer yourself and you´d never inscribe in one of these races, you´d certainly be thankful to him as you sail a quick yacht anyway.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The new Grand Soleil 52 Performance is no exception. This is the cruising-version of the yacht although the name´s appendix might be a bit misleading. For Grand Soleil, „Performance“ means cruising. If you want to take part in serious regattas you´d go for the „Race“-versions of the yachts. The 52 is available in both versions, at the Croisette on display is the cruising boat. In numbers: 16.20 metres hull length, a whopping 5.15 metres of width. 16.5 tons of displacement, the Solaris 55 almost equally sized comes with a weight of 23 tons … The sails area is said to bring 95 or 100 square metres of canvas to the (up)wind with an additional huge 250/280 square metres Gennaker for cruising or race versions. That´s something, I´d say …

Easy sailing deck layout

In this, a big boat like the Grand Soleil 52 should be sailed in th easiest way possible, which can best be seen by looking at her running rigging and the deck layout. Entering her wide stern section you´ll recognize a very nicely proportioned helm area. The two wheels are needed because her big width makes the way up to windward under heeling a kind of climbing a mountain. There´s a recessed mainsheet traveler , which I love and four winches to operate the whole running rigging, which, of course, is all diverted back to the front of the steering wheels.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The aft „working area“ on the deck behind the wheels is well sized, which also adds a kind of safety-feel should the weather and above all the sea state become a bit harsher. Some other yachts have their helmsmen positioned extremely near to the aft reeling which poses a kind of danger in my mind. Not so on the Grand Soleil 52. Underneath is a large aft lazarette, easily accessible via a opening hatch.

grand soleil sailing yachts

For the Performance „cruising“ version, the boat is sailed via four winches which are positioned well reachable between the cockpit lounge area and the wheels. All of which can be electrified. It´s of course not possible to work the winches from behind the wheels, but it´s just a step around. I loved the extra large canvas pouches to take on the lines, an easy, simple and convenient way to prevent sheet mumble . For the „Race“-version of this yacht the winches will take on addition two drums, adding up to six winches. The layout will become more racing-classic, with the Gennaker winches remaining on the aft position, two Jib winches on the cockpiut coamings and two working/halyard winches mounted to both sides of the entryway down to the salon.

grand soleil sailing yachts

In this, the Performance-version is sailed in the easiest way possible: A self-tacking Jib in the front and a (probably an upgrade) boom-furling mainsail will make sailing a push-button experience. Operating her safely single handed when underway and with just two hands more when mooring is a no-brainer a guess. In this, the target group for prospect owners of this yacht is easy to encircle: People who endulge themselves in some luxury but striving for a unique sailing experience with the speed and fun that only a powerful yacht like this can guarantee. Of course, this comes with an equivalent price tag …

Two men bringing about a change

Seeing all this – and we´ve just been up on deck for now – makes me think about Franco Corazza and most of all about Matteo Polli again. I meet this very sympathetic, very polite and almost shy guy aboard the Grand Soleil 52 right after an exclusive journalist briefing down in the saloon. For a person with his Palmarés of prizes and awards, a list of works as impressive as his, it always stuns me how approachable, welcoming and humble Matteo is presenting himself.

grand soleil sailing yachts

He is truly one of the deciding names in contemporary naval architecture right now and I am sure, once again unleashed by a customer client he is able to draw many more white rabbits out of his sleeve, he by no means has reached his end! It is so nice to witness his career, follow his works and step aboard his latest boats from time to time, truly, an extraordinary career! I hope that Cantiere del Pardo recognizes his influence on Grand Soleil and the fact that his design – at least in my eyes – has „saved“ the brand from boredom and insignificance. Speaking of being down below:

Welcome below deck

Grand Soleil is a luxury brand and where to showcase this claim better than inside the yacht itself? In this I must say I am not really a big fan of Nauta Design´s works, of course, not knowing how the design brief for this yacht was like and how much freedom the fellow designers of this bureau really had. Nauta for sure is a cornerstone of contemporary interior design and they blindfolded come up with practical, beautiful and seaworthy concepts of how to utilize interior volume best.

grand soleil sailing yachts

In this, their work for the Grand Soleil 52 is by no means disappointing nor in any case „bad“. I just had wished for a more bold step! Just a bit of something new, something fresh, something … unseen, maybe. Entering the saloon of the Grand Soleil 52 is revealing a pretty classy layout, nice, clean look that is Grand Soleil´s signature for sure and you´ll find everything right there where you´d suppose it to be. A galley (later more on that) to port side, a large dining table with U-settee to the front bulkhead. Complemeted with a vis-a-vis 3-seater and the chart-table. The 52 is available in three different wood designs and corresponding cushion-colors, Teak, white and grey Oak.

Not a galley. A kitchen!

The highlight of the Grand Soleil 52 for me is the galley. This is truly the first real „kitchen“ I´ve seen on a boat like this. It´s just wow! I mean, you´d expect a galley that size on a true blue water cruiser made to do the very long trips covering oceanic distances. The fridge/freezing volume of the Grand Soleil 52 offers over a whopping 170 litres! For comparison, the big-ass Jeanneau Yachts 55 made for excessive holidays flaoting on the water offers 144 litres.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The galley is really the dominating element of the Grand Soleil 52 with its huge central fridge, an almost closed O-shape that will provide for maximum safety when cooking offshore even in violent seastate. I don´t know why they´ve focused so much on the size of that galley, but it struck me the moment I entered the yacht down below. Maybe a testament or proposal to future owners who want to take this beautiful yacht out of her natural habitat, which of course is the Mediterranean, and sail her around the world on a really long (but quick) cruise?

grand soleil sailing yachts

I don´t really know of course as I couldn´t talk to someone of Nauta. But the idea is very clear to me: Just by added this huhe central fridge unit, it´s not just this big galley you´d get but also on the front side you achieve this very intimate, enclosed as well to three sides, seating area around the dinner table. Two very „private“ almost encapsulated areas creating an almost disconnected feeling. It kind of works for me, but also at the same time devides the large internal volume into separate „compartments“. Maybe that was the idea? I cannot know.

A safe bet: Nauta-Style

It is worth noticing that the interior wooden parts for the furniture are made with composite wood with a huge emphasis on weight saving. This surely is one of the main factors for this big boat being that light weight. Sure, she is not a dedicated ULDB-boat but for a luxury fast cruising yacht her size the displacement is really low. In this, of course, Nauta´s range of possibilities may have been limited in the design brief.

grand soleil sailing yachts

As I said, I´d wished for some more boldness or audacity to complement Matteo´s sleek and sexy design with a corresponding interior. It´s a kind of stark contrast to be honest to see such a conservative approach down below. It´s beautiful, don´t get me wrong! Nauta has come up with a proper yacht´s layout and some design elements which are really nice. But I kind of miss the Cherry on top. Maybe they should hire an „Interior-Matteo“?

grand soleil sailing yachts

Something I´d had done differently is the forward facing nav station positioned at the front bulkhead. This is really a bit dated. I am pro chart-tables , you know it, but if you fit one, on my eyes, it should have a really practical purpose. And it starts with a practical location. I mean, dashing down from the cockpit to the VHF , to do a logbook entry or just grab the boat´s documents is something that happens regularly: But why should I cross the whole saloon to reach the chart table? It would have been better – my opinion – to place it rear-facing right behind the starboard-side extra fridge and not so far away to the bulkhead. In this, the designers could have made some more use of the fridge´s top side. But anyway, that´s my only critique here. Surely, I am just one opinion and truly not the most important!

Three cabin luxury

Coming back to her cruising qualities, as a +50-footer the Grand Soleil 52 Performance offers a decent amount of comforts for her crew and guests. The boat is available only with a three cabin layout, classic front owner´s suite with en-suite bathroom and two aft cabins for crew and guests.

grand soleil sailing yachts

Let´s start with the main character in this play, the owner´s cabin. You probably know by now that I am not a particularly big fan of island beds and this will certainly never change. The 52´s island bed offers decent measurements and I am sure it´s very cozy in there. The overall design of the cabin is light, plain and practical. The cabin, as well as the overall interior design, is self-effacing: She is not meant to scream „I am rich!“ all over the place!

grand soleil sailing yachts

What I really like about the front cabin is the fact that the hull windows are placed on a location that makes it possible to look out onto the anchorage or the nice marina when laying in bed. Many other boats feature front cabin hull windows as well but these are placed in such a height that they merely function as an entrance for natural light (which in itself if a win for sure) but they don´t offer any „practical“ use for looking through them.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The en-suite bathroom is also very, very frugal, if I may say so. The room is very functional, wooden parts are reduced to a minimum. Luxury is in the details: Such as the nice stainless steel tap, the nicely designed sink or the hugh-grade Tecma electric toilets . I´d say that instead of utilizing a simple inlay made of white plastic a nicely CNC-milled Teak grating would have instantly upgraded the bathroom visually, but maybe that´s the character and concept of this yacht, the whole line?

grand soleil sailing yachts

Maybe the idea of introducing a new kind of, how should I name it, maybe „modest luxury“ is the core idea behind the Grand Soleil line? There is a huge difference in poerceived luxury aboard this yacht compared to, let´s say a Solaris or an Oyster , nevertheless, the level is the same. Maybe the task of creating a lightweight boat prevented Nauta from playing around with more lush materials and „luxury“?

grand soleil sailing yachts

I am sure that this approach will find ist fans for sure! The level of building quality of both wooden parts and GRP works lives up to the highest standards, as I mentioned, there are a lot of nice details documenting that. Like the massive scantling parts protecting the edges of the cupboads and other joinery. This „modest luxury“ is a nice new approach, although I guess it is also kind of polarizing. In the aft cabins clients have the choice between double berths and a butterfly bed configuration, which my two kids would love to occupy.

grand soleil sailing yachts

The boat always comes with two aft bathrooms, meaning that each cabin has ist own en-suite WC. The day bath that is also accessible from the saloon to be used whilst sailing features a nice large separated shower whereas the portside aft cabin bathroom is WC only with the possibility to take a shower by pulling out a head from the sink. I don´t like these configurations much as after each shower the whole WC-area needs to be cleaned which is a mess when sailing. Again, a nicely done Teak grating would have elevated the perceived luxury and quality very much.

grand soleil sailing yachts

This boat is made by people who know their job. Small details, such as perfectly fitting (!) and non-squeeking floor boards are just one example. In this perfect and noteworthy outcome, the efforts to achieve it are minimal: It´s just some little effort put in by the shipyard to attach little spacers between all of the floorboards and maybe put some extra effort in measureing and cutting the wood has this nice effect. How often on how many yachts are loosely put, sometimes jamming, noisy floorboards a constant source of annoyed owners?

Your next 52-footer?

My overall assessment is mixed, to be honest. I absolutely love the sexy, tempting and dynamic lines of the Grand Soleil 52 such as I adore any of Matteo Polli´s works. The boat looks fantastic and judging by the sheer numbers she will be a fun, quick, elegant and thoroughbred yacht to sail. What the hull model I admired amlost one years ago during Duesseldorf could only promise, the real yacht keeps it in the best possible way.

grand soleil sailing yachts

On the other hand, for my personal taste, her „modest luxury“ approach down in her saloon, cabins and bathrooms is a bit too restrained. I would have wished for a slightly more bold approach for her layout, a bit more bravery to leave the safe paths of coming up with such a classic design. I mean: You are Italian, who if not you should be on the forefront of design? And also, looking on the price tag, the boat could bear a little bit more lushness and luxury. But again: Maybe that´s just me and this simple, modest approach is her signature.

grand soleil sailing yachts

In the end, thanks Matteo for showing me around, congrats to your consistently amazing work! I will be checking regularly the race results of the big Mediterranean regatta-events to see if the Grand Soleil 52 is able to collect maybe as many places on the podium as her victorious sisters. For now, this was a very nice start for my Cannes Yachting 2024 series and I hope this article is also more than a nice Hors d´Oeuvre for your, dear readers.

Grand Soleil 50

Powerful yet opulent

In the rarified world of luxury sailing yachts, Grand Soleil has become a name synonymous with fast performance boats built to the highest standards. Italy's Cantiere del Pardo, builder of this well-known line, has relied on designer German Frers for its family of boats until now. Doug Peterson was chosen to design Grand Soleil's new 50-footer. Peterson's unique America's Cup experience brought the very latest in hull design and materials to the Grand Soleil 50, a beautifully appointed cruising yacht with competitive performance around the buoys.

The 50 oozes speed and streamlined comfort, with the long sheer and sleek deckhouse pioneered by Finland's Nautor, which is now a sine-qua-non of this type of boat. A tapering blue line accents the 50's sheer and it has a classic, if rounded, look, with a beamy transom that provides additional stability downwind. The powerful hull, with its slightly winged keel, is easily driven but displaces just over 31,000 pounds. This makes it a heavier boat, but not excessively so when compared with its luxury competitors.

My immediate impression was that of a fast cruising boat also intended to race. The 50's performance in light to moderate air certainly falls into that category. The standard rig has an I of 61 feet, 8 inches-best suited for boisterous European waters. The test boat had the optional tall rig, which tops out at 65 feet, 3 inches. This rig is advisable for Mediterranean and U.S. waters, where winds tend to be lighter. The 50's shallow keel, fitted to the test boat, draws 7 feet, 1 inch, while the deep keel draws 8 feet, 8 inches.

Above-deck comfort You step aboard into the large T-shaped aft cockpit and look forward along wide teak-covered side decks (teak is an option, but you must have it on this boat, if nothing else for its appearance and adhesion qualities). The boat is long and sleek with a highly efficient deck layout. Twin anchor rol-lers and deep anchor locker are at the bow, with a hatch leading to a deep sail locker in the center of the foredeck. You can also access this locker from below. Convenient, streamlined teak grab handles adorn the deckhouse. The wire stays are set well inboard, allowing you to walk forward in seconds. The wide, T-shaped cockpit has beautifully contoured benches, correctly angled both for your upper and lower back. Whether seated or standing, it is easy to brace yourself when the boat is hard on the wind, using the strategically placed ridge for your feet in the cockpit floor. The helm seat is comfortable at any angle of heel, with engine controls close to hand and ample space for instrumentation. The visibility forward is outstanding, largely because of the low deckhouse.

From the cockpit, you step easily down to the transom, where a modest extra expenditure will provide a hinged swim platform and shower. Behind, there is space to store sporting gear, inflatables and so on. The yard will even provide a convenient swiveling gangway if your cruising tastes lean toward Mediterranean ports, where you moor stern-to.

Classically Italian The main hatchway lies amidships, accessed from a small central cockpit, with halyard winches and stoppers close to hand. The main halyard has an additional stopper on the Sparcraft mast, allowing a single crewmember to reef the sail up forwardÑan important safety feature. The companionway leads into the saloon, an eloquent symphony of flowing curves and meticulously finished cherry wood combined with a white vinyl deck liner. Seven hatches, numerous opening ports and Dorade vents allow ample ventilation.

The saloon is understated yet opulent in a classically Italian way with an airy feeling and plenty of space. The impeccable construction includes locker liners and even hidden joinery, while the massive door handles and locker fittings will survive hurricanes. Six or seven people can dine to port in the U-shaped dining area, the midships bench tipping up to reveal a large storage space. Indeed, one of the outstanding features of the Grand Soleil is storage, which is more than adequate for long passages, something that some competing designs tend to neglect. With storage for 127 gallons of water and plenty of space for a watermaker, you could cruise anywhere.

A superbly designed galley lies to starboard of the companion ladder, complete with three-burner stove and oven, a freezer and double sinks. An ingenious touch crafted by a designer who does not like washing up, the dish lockers drain into the sinks, allowing you to put away wet dishes. A large, top-opening refrigerator lies immediately forward of the stove. This is the kind of galley you can wedge yourself into, especially if you install the optional galley strap across the opening. The navigation station at the forward starboard side of the saloon has a comfortable seat, room for electronics and books with the electric panel immediately outboard and, bless-the-builder, a hinged top for the table with a proper support.

A double cabin with berth to port is forward of the saloon. A large head and shower is located in the bow, which in turn opens up into the sail locker, equipped with stainless steel rails for stowing sheets and other gear. The head is beautifully finished with waterproofed cherry wood, while the double berth is fitted with two optional leecloths for use at seaÑa rare feature in yachts of this size. Again, I was impressed with the enormous amount of locker space in the cabin and head. Anyone taking off on a serious passage would need a locker inventory to keep track of where things are stowed.

A small aft foyer with a door, which I would dispense with, opens to port of the companionway into a shower to the right and into the aft stateroom, with yet another head and shower to starboard. The test boat had a centerline king-sized berth (version I), with seats on either side of the foot of the bed where you could sit and converse with your partner without the cockpit floor obtruding into your line of sight. Side and cockpit ports provide a sense of airiness often lacking in these configurations. The builder also offers an alternative layout with a queen-sized bed to port and a single, full-sized berth to starboard with a hinged pilot berth above it. Such a double-cabin design would be excellent for a large family or for chartering, but I must confess that I prefer the luxury of a king-sized bedÑat least in port.

The surprisingly small engine room lies between the companionway and the aft stateroom, into which the builders have squeezed a 63-horsepower Yanmar. Access is easy enough; I must confess I would prefer more room to maneuver with space for a small workshop, but this is a matter of personal taste.

Strong passagemaker I sailed the 50 on a sparkling Chesapeake Bay fall day, with a wind in the 5- to 10-knot range. We powered effortlessly out of the marina with perfect control astern and at close quarters. A 71-gallon fuel tank allows true long-distance range while motoring at 8 to 8.5 knots, but the engine is somewhat noisier below than one can reasonably expect in a boat of this size and quality. Certainly, the aft cabin would be somewhat of a sound box under power for any length of time.

In open water, we set the UK Spectra main and 130-percent genoa in short order, the latter on a Harken roller furler. The boat accelerated smoothly and powerfully, surging along at over 7 knots on a close reach in a remarkably short time. The fingertip control and light touch from the Solimar steering system were truly extraordinary, the best I have ever encountered in a yacht of this size. We hardened on the wind. The 50 heeled slightly, then settled down to work. She was at her best slightly cracked off at an angle between 35 and 40 degrees to the wind. I received an impression of power and control, of an ability for effortless long-distance passagemaking. Equipped with the right gear, this boat will excel as a true bluewater cruiser, capable of hundreds of miles a day in absurd comfort even when relatively short-handed, especially if you invest in the Harken electric-powered winches and other options which abounded on our test yacht. We came about smartly, the boat spinning on her fin keel with assurance. Within seconds, we were hard on the opposite tack, then bore off and jibed with ease. This is a large yacht but one with extraordinary levels of solid performance and control. Reefed down with a small staysail on the babystay, she would take almost any weather in comfort. The only downside: the lee runners, required in winds over 20 knots due to the tall rig. Nonetheless, in the final analysis they add up to little extra work under way.

Relatively few sailors will be able to afford the $421,000 base price of this extraordinary yacht. Those who can will have the luxury of customizing their boats for cruising or racing as much or as little as they wish. The test vessel was equipped with every imaginable cruising option from teak decks and a full sail inventory to leeboards and a collapsible teak cockpit table. For an extra $100,000 you can have almost anything you want aboard a Grand Soleil that will take you to any cruising ground on earth.

Few yachts measure up to the impeccable standards and powerful performance of the Grand Soleil 50. With the right equipment or a larger crew, this is a boat designed for long passages and deep blue water. If you see me on the dock, please give me a lift along the way.

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show

Maria Sapozhnikova

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

A SYMPHONY OF STYLE AND PERFORMANCE

Design, fun, performance..

The new Grand Soleil 40 has all the credentials to replicate the great success of the GS 44, winner of the last ORC World Championship. While maintaining the feeling of style, elegance and safety seen throughout the range. A fast and responsive boat that reflects its sporting personality in the performance on the water. Grand Soleil 40 will be presented in an exclusive World Première during Cannes Yachting Festival 2022. The hull lines are an evolution of the concepts studied for the GS 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volume as the heel increases. The bow profile remains very fine to maintain good performance in light airs and ensure a smooth passage through the waves. As on the GS 44, great importance was placed on the aft positioning of the shaft, enabling Nauta Design to develop an innovative layout and obtaining a benefit on both performance and comfort.

RELAXATION AND PERFORMANCE, 40 FEET OF GRAND SOLEIL DNA

The winning performance is always at hand on the new GS 40. The deck plan of the Performance version includes 4 winches as standard: two on the coachroof and two next to the helm positions. The self-tacking jib, also as standard, is equipped with a recessed track, while the mainsheet is positioned to a fixed point in the cockpit. A boat that is easy to use, luxurious and at the same time competitive in it’s performance.

grand soleil sailing yachts

RACE, THE LEGACY OF A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RANGE

The Race version amplifies the competitive potential of a boat already geared to racing. In this version the deck plan has been adapted to optimize sail performance, including the addition of 2 winches, race bowsprit, a hydraulic backstay, jib tracks in transverse position and a recessed mainsail track. The standard draft is already designed from a racing point of view (IRC) with a depth of 2.4 meters, cast iron blade and lead torpedo. Also available on the GS 40 are two other keel options: the first 2.1 meters optimized for ORC competitions, the second shallow draft of only 1.85 meters. Both the race and performance versions include a stern platform that can be opened electronically, equipped with a ladder for easy boarding to the swim platform.

HIGH QUALITY FINISHES AND TIMELESS DESIGN

Going below deck you enter a luxurious and fresh space, always functional in its details. Wide, practical, efficient interiors both for cruising use and for moving with agility during regattas. The interior has also been designed to maximize the space between the living and galley areas. Relaxation and comfort for the owner and their guests when cruising can also meet the needs of the regatta sailors.

A SET UP WITH NO COMPROMISES

In the Standard version, we can find three cabins and a bathroom, plus a technical compartment dedicated to the stowage of racing equipment. On the other hand, the Optional version has three cabins and two bathrooms.
