How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns satori superyacht

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Satori, the 50-metre semi-displacement motoryacht delivered by heesen yachts last may, was the recipient of not one but two world yacht trophies in cannes, and the prestigious prix du design in monaco. the awards are testament to her owner’s conviction, her designers’ creativity and the belief of her builders that the customer is (almost) always right.….

Eric Benson aboard Satori

The rapturous media reception that Satori has enjoyed is somewhat ironic when you consider that her owner was not initially in the market for a motoryacht at all.

When Benson eventually entered into a contract with Heesen, he took over a build that had been started by another owner.

Benson has not shelved his plans for a sailboat entirely and hinted that one might be in the pipeline.

This Luxury Hotel Has Its Own Yacht — Here's What It's Like Sailing On It

The visionary couple behind the beloved Tuscan boutique hotel Borgo San Pietro has introduced "Satori," a 137-foot sailing yacht.

Stuart Pearce/Courtesy of Borgo Lifestyle Group

This lifestyle luxury group is the gift that keeps on giving.

Shattering the glass ceiling with the highly talked about, award-winning 13th-century Tuscany boutique hotel Borgo Santo Pietro, the eponymous company now extends unrivaled charm and timeless design to Satori , the ultimate yacht experience.

A tender whisks me from the port in Athens, and we'll soon be approaching the yacht. From a short distance, I see the majestic Satori — or at least I hope I do. We start to slow for disembarkment, and the nautical blue starboard, vintage schooner shape, and vertical spars, standing majestic with the gods give her away. I do an internal backflip. It’s here, aboard this five-star luxury charter,  where I’ll spend the next few nights.

Stacey Wreathall/Travel + Leisure

I’m greeted with flowing wine and hors d'oeuvres, and I don't know it yet, but for the next few days, every bite (and sip) I take will make my taste buds dance with the Mediterranean's brightest and most organically sourced flavors.

As my luggage is taken care of, I'm ushered towards the plush coffee lounge seating area where I meet Claus Thottrup, half of the duo behind the Borgo Santo Pietro Group of lifestyle companies. "C’est Magnifique" by Kay Starr hums in the background, and the rosé feels pleasing on the palate. Claus beams as he tells me passionately about Satori ’s air-conditioned wine cellar.

(Side note: You're invited to indulge in the wine services aboard the yacht, and with an admirable boutique collection of wines selected to complement the impressive meals on board, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a reason not to indulge. In fact, the cellar stocks biodynamic and sustainably produced wines sourced directly from Borgo Santo Pietro’s estate in Tuscany.)

Claus continues to tell me with pride all about the 12 years of dedication and commitment to creating excellent taste profiles. Before I know it, I’ve finished my rosé, and I'm being handed a glass of pinot noir, another Borgo classic that goes down all too well.

Within an hour of my arrival, I slip into something more comfortable for sailing and began exploring.

At almost 137 feet in length, there’s ample opportunity for you to feel at home, and meandering through the space is easy. The teak flooring is smooth underfoot, and the flat floors make passing through each facet safe. With 376 square feet of indoor living space, encompassing a library, indoor dining area, and writing desk, you can take full advantage of the quiet moments. The best bit about this 'indoor' area is that you don’t feel like you're missing out on the sailing experience — the windows have been designed at sea level to bring expansive 360-degree views to you. In addition, the coffee deck at the stern lets you relax and be social with the wind in your hair. For complete privacy, the bow area offers an additional outdoor lounge. By night, it transforms into the most romantic cinema you’ve ever seen.

With five luxury guest rooms including a main suite, Satori can accommodate up to 10 guests. On the other hand, with fewer guests, you can convert a cabin into a private spa facility with a steam room and treatments.

We dropped anchor in the most idyllic spots: Dokos, Hydra, Spetses, and Poros. Unlike other charters, this slimline sailing yacht can schmooze close to the turquoise rock pools and crystal-clear shallow depths. Our first stop was Agine, a picture-perfect lagoon for swimming, jet skis, and getting out the toys . Adrenaline lovers will have endless fun with the range of Seabobs, Kayaks, and Ringos.

An afternoon of frivolity can work up a serious appetite, and I soon learned that aboard Satori , feeling hungry is a good idea. No matter what time of the day, a meal is never just a plate of food; it's a labor of love, thought, and execution — and there's plenty to go around. Guests can expect to eat at the mid-deck dining table with open kitchen views and unobstructed destination scenes.

Chefs are trained at Borgo Santo Pietro Saporium , the flagship Tuscany restaurant where authentic flavors and inventive cooking practices are the hallmarks of tantalizing cuisine. Needless to say, we were spoiled with inspired, flavourful dishes. My favorites were the lahmacun (a Middle Eastern flatbread), lobster risotto, and fresh tuna. For specifics, guests are encouraged to communicate preferences with the chef.

Co-owners and designers Claus and Jeanette Thottrup made it their mission to capture a truly remarkable dining experience . As part of the Borgo Santo Pietro luxury lifestyle group, the culinary mission is one of great passion for the pair. With two Michelin-starred restaurants, a five-star boutique hotel, and unique guest experiences centered around food and wine, there’s no surprise that gourmet flavors are at the epicenter of a Satori voyage.

Overamplifying the grace of Satori’s understated elegance and uncompromised comfort would ordinarily feel too much. But I catch a glimpse of myself in the glossy mahogany exterior, and amidst the deep diagonal layers of rich brown tones, I can see that Satori has gotten under my skin. Living up to her namesake meaning "instant enlightenment," I feel relaxed and at peace. Maybe it's the idea of traveling back in time?

This hand-carved wooden schooner gives all the vintage feels, as the inside decor illuminates the refined characteristics and prosperity of the 1920s and 1930s. The emphasis on clean lines, smooth round corners, and nature-inspired neutrals reflect a contemporary interpretation of Streamline Moderne . With orthopedic mattresses, sepia-tinted marble en-suite bathrooms, and technology-forward devices in every room, the old and new design elements merge unprecedentedly for a world-class sailing experience. I’m beginning to think that Satori’s unique narrative is what sailing dreams are made of.

The Genoa sail is out as we glide towards the island of Hydra. Island hopping and exploring untouched remnants of history are foremost on the itinerary. Of course, you can shape it to your liking, but for now, I felt like an Iconic star of the 1930s, taking in my first quintessential Greek experience.

A picturesque landscape that has seduced many with its stone mansions, brightly colored neighborhoods, and fairy-lit harbor is what you can expect from this island.  For us, getting lost in narrow alleys and visiting art museums is first on the agenda. Musing over the pleasant temperature came second. “This is shoulder season? It's perfect!” was the working title. Zero crowds and T-shirt weather make October in Greece a hot commodity — some might say it's the new July.

Satori offers multiple sailing destinations, and guests can pick from a Mediterranean menu of beautiful places. Itineraries for Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, France (Corsica) can be found here . Satori sails between June through October. Booking in advance is recommended to secure dates for that eagerly awaited romantic getaway or family adventure.

Inspired by their love of sailing and ongoing quest to create experiences for guests that go above and beyond, Satori unites luxury and nature in fresh and dynamic ways.

Flawless service is therefore built into Satori's DNA, where guests enjoy Michelin-starred dining prepared by a personal chef from the Group's restaurants Meo Modo and La Bottega del Buon Caffé , as well as onboard spa facilities , a range of the latest innovative water toys , and an extensive programme of concierge activities managed by 5-star boutique hotel and estate Borgo Santo Pietro. Finished in glossy mahogany and walnut with teak floors, wood panelling and large windows throughout, Satori embodies the slow living and exquisite detail of classic bygone-era sailing. Claus and Jeanette Thottrup took their signature holistic approach to creating distinct atmospheres on board Satori, such as situating the open-view kitchen, bar and dining area mid-deck for greater privacy. Framed by large windows with sweeping views of the sea, the kitchen has been designed to inspire creativity for the chef within as well as invite the guest to actively observe the deft preparation of gourmet dishes.

Satori's front deck is dedicated to cinema and solitude, with a state-of-the-art, fold-away cinema screen and generously sized sunbed that invites a total surrender of the senses to the heat of the sun and lulling motion of the waves. The top deck offers even more options for private sunbathing, with a row of sunbeds enjoying spectacular views over the water, while old-fashioned deck chairs, situated mid-deck, add to the quintessential feeling of sailing upon the seas. The yacht’s bespoke design enables guests to relax in intimate seclusion, with various decks offering separate spaces to enjoy shared company or retreat for a moment of privacy.

One of the guest rooms can be converted into a private spa facility with a steam room and used for therapeutic treatments. 2 Crew Members Under Investigation In Sicily Yacht Sinking

Shruti Rajkumar

As the investigation into the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily broadens, Italian prosecutors are now scrutinizing the actions of two other crew members in addition to the captain of the vessel.

On Wednesday, prosecutors placed crew members Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffiths under investigation, according to The New York Times . Eaton was in charge of the yacht’s engine room, while Griffiths was on lookout duty the night the yacht sank.

When someone is placed under investigation in Italy, there is no guarantee that charges will follow.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht deemed unsinkable by its ship maker Perini Navi, went down in a storm off the coast of Sicily on Aug. 19, killing one crew member and six passengers, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

The yacht carried 22 people — 10 crew members and 12 guests who were there celebrating Lynch’s acquittal in June on all charges in a fraud case that followed the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping on a lifeboat and were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell. It remains unclear how the Bayesian sank, especially as the nearby Baden Powell remained largely unscathed despite the storm.

According to The Associated Press , Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, said the yacht’s sinking was likely caused by human error.

“The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told Italian state media, per the AP.

Captain James Cutfield is facing a manslaughter inquiry to determine whether his actions caused the shipwreck, Cutfield’s lawyer Giovanni Rizzuti told the Times on Tuesday. Prosecutors interviewed Cutfield this week, but he exercised his right to remain silent and is “very distressed,” according to Rizzuti.

This week, nine of the 10 crew members, including those under investigation, left Sicily, sources told the Times. In Italy, people under investigation are not prohibited from leaving the country.

preference 19 yacht

Inside the adventures of superyacht owners around the world

Every month, superyacht owners reveal where they are in the world and share their future plans. This month, the 32-metre Windship and Trident -built sailing yacht Elton prepares for her 2024 European tour, while a championship-winning sailor states his preference for an expedition motor yacht...

Andy Scott, owner of Elton

Length : 31.7m Year: 1992 Location: Portsmouth

How do you get your yachting fix in winter? I’m having to do some work in the UK this winter on a big deal for our transport companies, but the plan is to take Elton XX , my 20-metre classic, to the Caribbean this year to do the regattas in Antigua, St Maartin and eventually the St Barths Bucket in 2025. She’s currently out of the water, having her 62-year-old hull checked out to make sure she’s still floating in another 60 years. She’s often described as the most beautiful Sangermani ever built.

How’s the 2024 charter season looking? Elton charters out at €35,000 per week, and that lower end of the superyacht market tends to fill up at the last minute. Often our charters are booked with just two days’ notice, which the crew hate, but it fills gaps. Last year we did something new and marketed the yacht for €100,000 a month, which was really popular with people who wanted an extended holiday in the South of France, the Balearics, Corsica and Italy. If we can book these month-long charters for June and September, it’s great business, and leaves the prime weeks to fill up at the full rate, which is the hope.

How have the last few years been for charter? We have been fully booked for the last three years. Coming out of Covid-19, we did the Med followed by the Caribbean and managed to book 14 weeks. However, this puts a strain on both the boat and crew, and leaves very little time for planned maintenance if you arrive back from the Caribbean around May to start Med charters in June. I treat my boats as businesses rather than toys, so in future I plan to leave Elton in Europe for the Med season, and leave the smaller boat, Elton XX , in the Caribbean. This means crew are employed year-round and the boats don’t get so battered. It also means I get to spend a decent amount of time on both boats. My big concern is finding somewhere safe to leave the smaller boat in the Caribbean so it’s out of the big hurricane areas.

What’s the secret to keeping a great charter crew?   It’s becoming harder and harder, especially as boats are becoming larger, and crew naturally want to work on bigger, shinier, newer boats. I aim to get couples, as it’s good for crew retention (despite it being my idea of hell!). Also, small touches like making sure the captain has a car wherever he or she is makes a big difference.

Do you have your eye on any other yachts? I currently have a 60-metre former cargo ship and am trying to find a permanent mooring for it on the Thames to convert it into a home, which is no easy task for a vessel of that size. It has six bedrooms, an indoor/outdoor pool and can double as a floating boutique hotel. I got very close to buying a 47-metre Perini last year which needed a full refit. I’m always open to such deals if sellers need to sell quickly.

Where’s your favourite place to cruise? I spend summers at my house between Cannes and Saint-Tropez or on one of the boats when they’re not chartered. It’s a great base as most charters start in Monaco, Cannes, or Corsica.

What’s your drink of choice on deck?  I still drink vodka and Diet Coke, despite it being a teenagers’ drink. Sometimes the 3am heart palpitations tell me I should probably switch to my more mature second preference of gin and tonic!

Douglas Rastello, owner of Preference 19

Length: 36.4m Year: 2011 Location: Loano

What’s happening with Preference 19 in the off season? Preference 19 is currently out of the water getting spruced up for the Med season but will be back in the water soon. In July and August, we offer the boat for charter as we spend those months in Lake Tahoe, spending spring and autumn on board. We’re pleased if we can pick up six or seven charters a year.

As a former America’s Cupper, will you be in Barcelona later this year? We want to support the American Magic team, so the plan is to be in Barcelona during the races. I remember back in 2007 when the Cup was in Valencia there were hundreds of yachts in the marina that went out each day watching the races. The starting line area was quite a spectacle – I hope they can recreate that environment again this year. I do worry about the sailing conditions in Barcelona in October, but I am sure it will be an event not to miss and we will be there.

Preference 19 is not your typical white boat. What drew you to her?   We prefer explorer-style motor yachts like Preference 19 , with extensive exterior space and a clean, modern interior. She’s a little over 10 years old now and looks great. It’s perfect for families because of the deck space, where people can just hang out and take advantage of the multitude of water activities. On board, we have circuit training in the morning and have a basketball hoop for a game in the afternoon. Preference 19 is not about interior volume; for us it’s about life on the water and living outside.

You’re a sailor at heart. Was it hard buying a motor yacht?   I don’t know how to answer that because Preference 19 was such an impulse buy! We weren’t looking for a motor yacht, she found us. It’s one of the best things we have ever done. In the future I can see transitioning to a large sailing yacht, but we’re not in a hurry. I am active in the J/70 racing scene in Europe and the States, and also participate in other regattas.

Have you made many changes to the yacht? We’ve changed some of the soft furnishings and furniture layouts,  but we haven’t made any dramatic changes. Like many other yachts, we have added Starlink because you need to have reliable high-speed internet on board.

Do you get involved in the running of the boat? We work with our captain and our management company, Edmiston , weekly, especially in the off season to approve winter works and plan for the coming season. There are seven crew on board – four roles are steady and three tend to rotate a bit. The crew make the Preference 19 experience special, for us and for all our charter guests.
