It’s no easy feat to incorporate a next-gen electric propulsion system into an elegant sloop. X- Yachts appears to have pulled it off, though.

The Danish yacht maker, which has spent more than 40 years in the game, just launched a futuristic new sailing yacht that looks to be as stylish as it is sustainable. Christened the X49E , the 49-footer is the very first electric sailboat to be made by the yard.

The 12-ton newcomer is based on the existing X49 model , but eschews the traditional diesel engines in favor of two of Oceanvolt’s 10 kW electric motors. The pods are mounted on each side of the traditional engine compartment, below the aft cabin bunks. The space which used to hold the engines now houses a 28.8 kWh lithium battery bank and an onboard DC generator with a capacity of 11 kW.

The X49E’s solar panels generate energy to power the hotel load.  X-Yachts

Range with pure electric power depends on the boat speed, wind and sea state, but X-Yachts estimates in calm conditions the yacht can travel 22.7 nautical miles at 5 knots. Of course, the diesel generator can be used to run the boat if more range is required.

X49E can also produce up to 3.5 kW when sailing at speeds greater than 8 knots. That means if you sail for roughly eight hours, the batteries will charge from empty to full. The best part is the “full tank” is 100 percent green and free of cost.

To top it off, the X49E is fitted with solar panels that will generate clean energy to power the hotel load. That is the lights, navigation systems, appliances and so on.

The first hull was built for a discerning yachtsman.  X-Yachts

”We didn’t want to be first movers on this area, but preferred to wait until technology and knowledge had matured properly”, Kraen Nielsen, CEO of X-Yachts, said in a statement . “And I’m really happy to say that the time finally is right to present the first X-Yacht with electric propulsion.”

The first hull was built for discerning yachtsman John Haurum, who has a passion for sailing both recreationally and in competition.

“My plans for the X49 are primarily to use it for long-distance cruising, but it has also been specified with performance sailing in mind and I intend to participate in challenges like Around Denmark Race and, eventually, the ARC Cross Atlantic,” Haurum adds.

Performance & Range

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles from her 296,300 litre fuel tanks at 16 knots. Project X features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

Onboard Project X has a large selection of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Principle among these is a Flyboard, experience flying in and out of the water with the latest in high adrenaline watersport. Also there are waterslides for hours of fun for all ages. You'll be loving the huge adrenaline rush as you zip over the water on one of the four SeaDoo WaveRunners. If that isn't enough Project X also features waterskis, a seabob, wakeboards, kayaks, bikes and much more. Project X and her crew are available for charter this summer for cruising within the Mediterranean. She is already accepting bookings this winter for cruising in the Indian Ocean.

Known for the tranquil escapes offered by its luxurious sanctuaries, Aman will be welcoming guests on board the Aman at Sea 50-suite motor yacht, expected to begin itineraries in 2027.

Upon signing a joint venture contract with Cruise Saudi's Managing Director, Mr Fawaz Farooqui, and a ship building contract with Italian shipbuilder T. Mariotti S.p.A at the end of 2023, the Aman luxury motor yacht build is designed to deliver the ultimate luxury cruise experience.

Aman Chairman and CEO Vlad Doronin commented, “With 35 hotels, resorts, and branded residences across 20 destinations, Aman at Sea marks a new direction for the brand and the chance to bring Aman’s exceptional design, which is integral to the brand’s ethos, into an entirely new setting.” Additional remarks addressed the significance of the contract as an exciting milestone in Aman’s partnership with T. Mariotti.

A Zen-inspired Japanese garden will be part of the allure on the Aman at Sea build currently in the ... [+] works at Italy's T. Mariotti shipyard. The yacht is expected to set sail with a 2027 itinerary.

Financing and Overseeing The Build

Financing granted by a pool led by Intesa Sanpaolo and coordinated by Nanni Grazzini has been arranged. A sponsor of the Made in Italy campaign and an industrial powerhouse in business since 1928, Mariotti is a strong contributor to the growth of the city of Genoa, a center of maritime business.

Jonathon Wilson has been selected to lead the development and implementation of the yacht with the title of Chief Executive Officer of Aman at Sea. Wilson is expected to work closely with Doronin to ensure appropriate brand connection.

Laying The Keel

In July, 2024, the Aman at Sea ceremonial keel laying was held at the T. Mariotti San Giorgio di Nogaro, Italy shipyard. Wilson was joined by Marco Ghiglione, CEO of T. Mariotti, to watch the 200-ton steel block as it was lowered into place. As per tradition, newly minted coins were placed on the steel, ensuring good luck for the vessel’s future.

Ghiglione announced, “Laying the keel of the world’s most luxurious yacht brings to life the ambitions design our team has produced with their efforts so far.”

Boats Currently Serving Aman Resorts

Many Aman properties are nestled close to beautiful water, boasting Aman watercraft appropriate to the environment. None, however posh, quite approach the level of space and luxury planned for Aman at Sea.

Aman's Amandira, the Phinisi sailing and diving vessel was handcrafted of local hardwoods by Konjo ... [+] artisans. It cruises the waters around Indonesia with space for ten guests in five cabins.

Amandira, a custom-built, two-masted 170-foot (52-meter) Phinisi sailing and diving vessel is the privilege of ten guests inhabiting five spacious cabins served by 14 crew comprised of two chefs, a dive master, and massage therapist. Outfitted with indoor and outdoor lounging and dining areas, a TV, and a library, the yacht is geared toward water adventure, culinary excellence, and a high level of service. The yacht is handcrafted of local hardwoods by skilled Konjo artisans. Amandira sails the seas surrounding Indonesia’s Alor Islands, Triton Bay, Raja Ampat, Komodo National Park, and the Spice Islands.

The Aman Venice in Italy treats guests to a water view of this famed city via numerous excursions on a variety of watercraft. One standout includes the 1930s deco-style launch designed and built for Aman Venice is perfect for an evening aperitivo accompanied by ciccetti while cruising the lagoon.

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

The Xc 47 marks the beginning of a completely new generation of XCruising. The concept is built on years of experience and a desire to accommodate the growing number of sailors looking for a true bluewater cruiser.

‘In short, Xc 47 is an elegant bluewater cruiser, built for safe and comfortable sailing on the oceans. Immense focus has been placed on the design to make shorthanded sailing safe and easy’, says Thomas Mielec, director of design & engineering at X-Yachts.

‘Many of our customers share a dream of heading off on a long cruise, often around the world. With this yacht, they will be ready and able to achieve this whenever the opportunity arises.

Shorthanded with ease and style

Most sailing today, even bluewater cruising, is performed with a small crew, with often just a couple of crew members, which the development team has kept in mind right from the outset of the design process. Some of the design features and functions have been seen before on other premium yachts, but on the Xc 47, they are executed with an unprecedented sense of style.

The cockpit layout has been designed to give the helmsman the capability of handling all lines. Four winches – two on each side, are positioned in front of the wheels. All relevant trim lines are led in channels under the deck from the mast to the steering position, with jammers reachable for the helmsman.

The traveller has been re-positioned from the cockpit to a position in front of the sprayhood. Apart from creating an efficient workspace, this cockpit arrangement leaves room for a comfortable living space, with the sail handling concentrated to the area at the helm station.

Near the transom, a large aft deck accommodates a comfortable full-width seating area behind the wheels, as well as a nice sunbathing area. As it should be on a true offshore yacht, the cockpit is deep, well protected, and with a closed transom.

Updated Xc design

The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the aft of the Xc 47 has a modern, wider stern section, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form and stability, improved performance and more space in the aft cabins.

Carbon reinforced

The Xc 47 is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger without adding excess weight.

The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure. "We have introduced what we like to call a "semi deck saloon. This solution provides a better view of the surroundings, when under deck with more natural light, and an opportunity for multilevel floors." Says Thomas Mielec

To make sure the Xc 47 is capable of carrying provisions for long periods of time, the yacht has efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior.

CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen highlights, "Danish design and architecture are famous for clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. Cockpit features

The Xc 47 is designed with a safe, deep, closed cockpit with wide coamings with a great overview especially from the helming positions.

Steering wheels

The Steering wheels is increased from 90 cm to 100 cm in diameterand is in the same comfortable height as on the X5.6.

Dinghy & Davits

The transom door has an option of integrated davits with the new “easy launch” function.

Bowsprit design

Longer, wider and better integrated into the bow design. Option for integrated electric gennaker furler.

Sail handling is controlled from the aft part of the cockpit. Haylards, reefing and control lines and sheets are led to the four standard self-tailing winches in front of the helming positions with the German mainsheet system operable from both sides.

Both the mainsheet and the genoa sheets are led through jammers, allowing you to easily free up a winch. The winches are arranged for optimal operation from the helming position when sailing shorthanded.

The low coaming aft of the wheels together with the foldable foot chocks ensure comfortable helming.

Compared to the Xc 50, there is about 6 cm more space between the wheel and the aft cockpit locker, for better helming comfort.

They have a capacity of 150 kg per davit and 200 kg in total. When the dinghy is hanging in the davits, there is a free view over it from the helming position, and when the dinghy is launched the davits can either lay on the bathing platform or be stored in the deep “step down” locker.
