A look inside tiger woods' sick $20 million yacht he's living in during the u.s. open, share this article.

yacht privacy location

Tiger Woods figured out the best way to beat the crazy traffic that golfers and fans will encounter while trying to get to Shinnecock Hills.

He’s staying on his 155-foot yacht, Privacy, which is docked near the home of the 2018 U.S. Open.

“Staying on the dinghy helps,” Woods said on Tuesday, via USA TODAY Sports .

Ever wondered what’s inside of that $20 million “dinghy”? Golf Channel  got a peek, and as expected, it’s incredible:

A recap: Five staterooms for guests, four rooms for the crew, a gym, an eight-person hot tub, kayaks, scooters … yeah, that’s quite a “dinghy.”

5 things to know about Tiger Woods’s extravagant yacht, Privacy

yacht privacy location

Tiger Woods traveled to the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in atypical fashion: aboard his luxury yacht, Privacy. Here’s what you need to know about this impressive-looking ship.

1. This isn’t the first time that Woods has used the yacht as transport for a major. He also stayed on the boat during the U.S. Open at  Winged Foot , attracting plenty of notice from the locals.

2. The yacht measures 6,500 square feet, with space for 21 people to sleep. It’s also got a gym, jacuzzi and theater. It is decorated with cherry wood, beige marble, white carpets, and white silk walls.

3. It’s reportedly worth $20 million and costs $2 million a year to maintain and run, including a crew of nine. Reports circulated in 2011 that Woods was trying to sell the yacht after his ex-wife Elin turned it down as part of her divoce settlement in their split.

4. The Hamptons yacht club where Woods’s boat is currently docked charges $1,085 a day for a craft of that size.

5. Woods joked on Tuesday that his “dinghy” would help him to avoid the sluggish traffic in the area around Shinnecock Hills this week, a problem bedeviling players, fans and media alike.[image:14158807]

Does Tiger Woods need a bigger boat? His yacht Privacy is dwarfed by others in Bahamas

Tiger Woods traveled by yacht to the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas this week.

Yes, that would be the $20 million luxury vessel dubbed Privacy.

Woods, who bought the boat in 2004, has taken it around the world, including the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York.

Now, it's parked in the Bahamas, which is not surprising.

What might be surprising is how this 6,500-square-foot craft is dwarfed by other boats in dock. The one on the far left is Tiger's.

The Golf Channel's Dan Hicks quipped that it "might be time for Tiger to trade that in" when comparing Privacy to other absurdly large and much more expensive watercraft.

HERO WORLD CHALLENGE: How Tiger fared during the first round in Bahamas

TIGER: Woods turned down millions by declining to play in controversial Saudi event

OPINION: For a fee, Phil Mickelson sells his conscience to play in Saudi International

Notah Begay, a longtime friend of Woods who has been aboard Privacy, joked, "I'm from New Mexico. I don't see many of these things."

Privacy sleeps between 10 and 12, has a crew of nine and reportedly costs $2 million a year to operate.

It includes:

  • Large deck bar
  • Eight-person Jacuzzi
  • Scuba-tank fill station
  • Inflatable decompression chamber
  • Cherry woodwork in the interior
  • VIP stateroom with two queen size cabin amidships and a twin cabin
  • Gym with a treadmill, exercise bike and free weights
  • Three-person elevator

Privacy has a 4,000-mile range thanks to a 12,000-gallon fuel tank, and can travel at a maximum speed of 17 knots.

A Closer Look at Tiger Woods’ Yacht “Privacy”

Tiger Woods changed the face of golf. He was the reason why the sport garnered a renewed interest even from those that had no interest in it before. That was in 1996 when he turned pro. It’s been over two decades now, and the professional golfer is still going at it. Sure, he’s been through rough times in his career, but he continues to work hard in order to still be the golfer that everyone has admired all these years. Because of his hard work and dedication to his craft, Tiger’s net worth is an astounding $800 million. Sure he’s got a house in one of the richest towns in Florida, but what’s impressed us more is his yacht Privacy. He’s definitely living and enjoying the boating community he moved into back in 2010, and we’re going to take a closer look at the yacht that’s allowed him to do so.

Over the course of his career, Tiger has made over $1.2 billion USD in earnings. That’s really how he can afford his superyacht that’s currently valued at $20 million (also the purchase price). It’s a lot of money for the average person, but it’s basically chump change for the PGA Champion. Tiger uses his yacht quite often, especially after his tournaments. It’s the perfect retreat spot for him. Considering that he lives in an area where people normally vacation, you can imagine that Tiger’s probably on his yacht quite often. The yacht is called Privacy, and it certainly offers plenty of room to get just that. Privacy is roughly 155 ft (47 meters) in length. Just to put that into perspective, an average yacht is about 33 ft in length. Tiger’s yacht is roughly 5 times the standard yacht. Tiger’s never really talked about his yacht before, and we can gather as much from the name he’s given it. He purchased the vessel back in 2004 with his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren. In fact, the yacht was probably purchased just for their wedding. Tiger and Elin spent their wedding night aboard Privacy.

Elin decorated most of the interior of the yacht. Majority of the design choices inside and outside the yacht were also mostly Elin’s choices. It appears that Tiger hasn’t done any major changes to the yacht after the two divorced. We really can’t blame him because Privacy is made quite well—with luxury in mind. Christensen Shipyards, a company in Vancouver, Washington that specializes in custom-built yachts, made the yacht according to Tiger and Elin’s specifications. Unfortunately, Tiger filed a lawsuit against Christensen, citing that the yacht builders violated a mutual agreement that they weren’t going to use Tiger’s name to promote their business. The company apparently used Tiger’s photo and name to do exactly what they weren’t supposed to. Christensen ended up settling the lawsuit and paid Tiger $1.6 million in the process. Tiger docks his yacht at a marina close to his home in North Palm Beach, Florida. While he may have enough room in his Jupiter, Florida home for this 155-foot vessel, Tiger’s never really docked the yacht at home. It probably blocks the view too much, but his superyacht is a looker all on its own with distinctive designs around the hull . It features three levels that maximize the 6,500 square feet of living space. The vessel can sleep up to 21 people, including guests and a cabin crew. The yacht has 5 cabins that can sleep up to 10 guests, and it has 4 cabins for the rest of the crew.

Privacy is all about luxury, and it has all the amenities you could ever think of. The boat deck features a large, gorgeous bar and a Jacuzzi designed to fit 8 people. It also has a deck dining area that can comfortably sit 12 people. The gym is a full-sized facility that has a treadmill, an exercise bike, free weights, and more. The yacht also has a three-person elevator, a walk-in refrigerator, and two built-in wall safes. The interior of Privacy is designed with modern, luxurious touches. The cherry woodwork is stunning and can be found all over the yacht. The main floor has an open floor concept, and it provides impressive views of the interior and the outdoors. The kitchen is fully equipped and is state-of-the-art. It has a clean look to it that makes you want to actually cook. But of course, Tiger’s got his crew to take care of all that.

The yacht is equipped with all the watersports equipment you can think of. There are at least 3 jet skis, 2 ocean kayaks, and even a couple of Vespa scooters available for when the guests want to explore land when Privacy is docked. It even has a decompression chamber to go along with all the scuba gear on board. The superyacht can hold up to 12,000 gallons of fuel, which really can take you anywhere you want to go. It can hold up to 2,000 gallons of water and cruises at 16 knots. Privacy’s top speed is at 18 knots and has a 4,000nm range. Everything on Privacy is about relaxation and enjoyment. This is the kind of yacht that you could never get tired of. That’s probably the whole idea when Tiger purchased this yacht as his retreat. But he does own a smaller yacht called Solitude. It’s definitely nothing compared to the size and amenities of Privacy, but why own one when you can have two? As of right now, Privacy is not available for charter nor is it available for sale. We’re thinking Tiger Woods might hold on to Privacy until he’s ready to get into an even bigger, more luxurious yacht.

Oceanco is accustomed to unique and challenging client requests, from unusual feats of design to remarkable security systems. Here, the custom superyacht builder shares some of the options available for onboard technology that could have come straight out of the pages of a spy novel.

Secret-service level security and top notch medical facilities onboard For custom-built superyachts, there are some owners who choose to opt for secret-service level security and privacy onboard, maybe because they enjoy cutting edge gadgetry or they wish to continue their regular lifestyle while at sea. From drone blocking force fields to motion-detecting smart floors, the kinds of futuristic technologies we are used to seeing in action films are not so far from the reality of today’s top-level security and privacy options for large custom superyachts.

And with increasing autonomy and range on today’s vessels, many are heading off the beaten track and into remote waters where local medical back-up might be in shorter supply. In response, the grandest and most well-equipped superyachts can be kitted out with fully functioning hospitals, manned by dedicated medical staff, to provide reassurance.

“When it comes to creating a fully bespoke superyacht, we are accustomed to the challenges of specialist requests such as these. James Bond had ‘Q’ to supply his outlandish gadgets; superyacht owners have ‘O’, aka Oceanco,” comments Paris Baloumis Oceanco’s Marketing Director

Although the company naturally maintains full confidentiality regarding any specific client’s requirements as well as their identities. “We bring in experts from inside and outside yachting to consult on high-security projects and adopt technologies from other sectors. What’s more, we take our own security at Oceanco very seriously to maintain privacy during the construction of our yachts; the shipyard is fitted out with high-security systems, too.” Marcel Onkenhout Oceanco’s CEO

Citadel rooms In the extremely rare case that an unwanted visitor boards their yacht, some owners like the reassurance of a secure location to go to. These places are known as ‘citadels’, and they were first put to use in commercial shipping before crossing over to yachting.

Citadels are kitted out with independent, overriding access to the yacht’s navigational and satellite communications systems, so even when you don’t have access to the bridge, you can maintain full control. The rooms themselves are fitted with reinforced doors and have ballistic protection on the surrounding walls. Inside, they are equipped with their own ventilation systems as well as water and food supplies to provide total self-sufficiency.

Emergency escape ‘life-pods’ for a rapid getaway And the next generation of citadels could be distinctly more mobile. Like crossing a lifeboat with a space ship, these emergency escape ‘Life-Pods’ provide a rapid getaway. The watertight pods are constructed from high-tech materials to resist impact and feature built-in GPS trackers, temperature and fire barrier controls, and air purification systems.

Anti-drone systems In recent years, drones have been making headlines for their interference with commercial airports, and the military have been particularly keen to curb their capability to spy on top secret locations. As well as being a handy tool for the paparazzi to get up-close shots of a superyacht’s private enclaves and the guests within them, those involved in the murky waters of industrial espionage can thank drones for greatly increasing their capabilities, too.  But a new generation of devices to detect and defeat these drones is emerging to neutralize the occasional threats to privacy and security on yachts. One such defense system identifies any commercial drones in operation within a 20 kilometer radius, providing GPS positions of both the drone and the pilot as well as an indication of said drone’s heading and speed.

A 500-meter electronic ‘exclusion zone’ around the yacht Once the drone threat has been confirmed, the system engages a 500-meter-plus electronic ‘exclusion zone’ around the yacht (not unlike the force fields we are used to seeing in sci-fi films) that blocks any unwanted airborne visitors. If the drone makes it to the perimeter of the exclusion zone, its controls and video feed are jammed, effectively rendering the pilot’s controls useless, and its ‘return to home’ function (which usually kicks in when the drone has a low battery) is triggered.

Acoustic deterrents The Long-Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD for short, is an acoustic deterrent that was originally developed for military use. But as the threat of piracy to commercial shipping and yachting in certain areas such as the Gulf of Aden grew over recent decades, the device has been adopted to deter unwelcome visitors in non-military settings.

A range of more than three kilometers The sonic device emits an uncomfortable, high-pitched noise that is above the tolerance of the average person, causing them to be driven away from whoever is controlling it. With a practical range of more than three kilometers, the device can be adjusted to broadcast voice commands in numerous languages on top of the deterrent tones, allowing you to provide warnings to potential interlopers (or even the odd suspicious fishing boat).

Intruder diver detectors Think someone could sneak up on a superyacht by pulling on a wet suit and scuba gear? Think again, as some superyachts are choosing to install sonar systems that detect, track and identify divers or underwater vehicles approaching from any direction.

Keeping sonar environmentally friendly Sonardyne’s Sentinel Intruder Detection Sonar is the world’s most widely deployed system of its kind, used by naval vessels, commercial harbors and luxury yachts alike. With a functional range of up to 900 meters for diver detection, it is man-portable, making it particularly quick to deploy, and it can even be placed on the yacht’s tenders to increase your scope of situational awareness. What’s more, the manufacturer has created the system to be environmentally friendly, so it won’t have an adverse effect on the local sea life.

Onboard hospitals Perhaps a yacht is expecting to travel to remote regions where on-the-ground medical support is less accessible. Or maybe the Owners are more mature and have specific conditions that mean they seek the reassurance of an onsite doctor or nurse. Either way, an onboard hospital is not an uncommon request for custom superyacht builders.

Emergency facilities like a private hospital Kitted out like an emergency room of a private hospital, they are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications and intravenous fluids, while a number of yachts offer rehabilitation machines for injuries, such as decompression chambers for those who are planning on some serious scuba diving expeditions. And should a patient require further medical attention, most of today’s large yachts have a helipad with the possibility of bringing in medic air services to the yacht, or heli-evacuating them away to a larger facility ashore.

A doctor on-call Remember the scene in Casino Royale where James Bond hooks himself up to a remote medical diagnostic system and the doctors talk him through his medical emergency with all his vitals up on their screens? Well, that scene is less fictional than you might at first have thought.  With the right diagnostic kit placed onboard, crew or even medical professionals can link up to a remote medical support line such as MedAire from International SOS, allowing a team of doctors to see the patient’s condition in real time and provide advice on procedures or medication in order to stabilize the patient.  Before an emergency has even arisen, the telehealth consultants will often provide guidance on medical room design and ventilation, lighting and medical wash facilities, as well as what diagnostic equipment to place onboard. Who needs the flying doctors when you can beam them in to wherever you re in the world at a moment’s notice?

Superyacht security e privacy: nothing is mission impossible

Windows as tough as steel The ingenious engineers behind A60 windows have taken the notion of toughened safety glass to new heights. Made from hot extruded steel or stainless steel profiles, the compound glass windows provide protection against a fire for up to an hour and are available in a range of thicknesses while maintaining low optical distortion and good light transmittance. They can be thermally or chemically toughened, laminated, thermally isolated, and manufactured to be sound proof or bullet proof. The glass is mounted into a frame with a specialist U-profile system, ensuring it remains flexible and minimizes the risk of corrosion from the environment over time. When you have concerns about protecting what is behind a yacht’s windows, the A60 is the go-to solution.

A cyber security net Just as any home or office will likely choose to protect itself from outsiders accessing private and personal data, any superyacht could be vulnerable to cyber threats. With the increasing preponderance of wirelessly controlled systems featured onboard, those yachts that do not provide themselves with an added layer of technological security can leave themselves open to hacking. Oceanco works with a select range of top-tier cyber security professionals to ensure that its yachts are built with the kind of network protections that will keep its owners and crew safe, through a combination of initial risk assessments during the development phase of a project and ongoing upgrades as the digital landscape evolves.

Superyacht Privacy: Top 10 Tips to Beat the Onlookers

In the world of luxury and opulence, superyachts stand as symbols of ultimate leisure and affluence. However, with great visibility comes the inescapable eye of the paparazzi and curious onlookers, often looking for a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous. Ensuring privacy on these floating palaces is paramount, not only for the sake of discretion but also for the comfort and security of those on board. Here’s a curated Top 10 list to help superyacht owners and charterers maintain their sanctuary at sea.

1. Strategic Mooring 2. Onboard Privacy Technology 3. Tinted Windows & Privacy Screens 4. Use of Decoys 5. Private Tenders 6. Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) 7. Digital Privacy 8. Use Professional Security 9. Discreet Travel Plans 10. Natural Barriers

1. Strategic Mooring

Choose more secluded marinas or anchor off-coast where access is limited. Sometimes the best way to avoid attention is to moor farther away from popular and busy ports. Here are some ideas:

  • Port Cros, France : A national park off the French Riviera, Port Cros allows limited anchorage, providing a serene escape from the bustling ports nearby.
  • Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand : A complex network of sea-drowned valleys on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, it offers numerous secluded anchorages.
  • San Blas Islands, Panama : A group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, they are not only picturesque but also less frequented by the paparazzi compared to other Caribbean hotspots.
  • Isles of Scilly, UK : Located off the southwest tip of Cornwall, these islands offer beautiful landscapes and more privacy than the popular Mediterranean spots.
  • Bay of Kotor, Montenegro : While the Adriatic coast can be busy, the Bay of Kotor’s deep fjord-like waters provide more secluded anchor spots.
  • Desolation Sound, British Columbia : Known for its dramatic landscapes, it’s a less frequented spot compared to other parts of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Raja Ampat, Indonesia : An archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals, its remote location ensures privacy.
  • Svalbard, Norway : For those looking for extreme privacy, this Arctic archipelago offers isolation combined with stunning glacial landscapes.
  • Aysén Region, Chile : Located in the southern part of Chile, it’s a maze of fjords, rivers, and channels, providing a variety of hidden spots.
  • Andaman Islands, India : While some parts are restricted due to indigenous reserves, certain islands offer pristine beaches and seclusion.

2. Onboard Privacy Technology

Use state-of-the-art surveillance systems to detect unauthorized vessels or drones approaching. Anti-drone technology can help neutralize prying cameras from the sky. Here is a quick rundown on Anti-drone tech:

  • Radar Systems : These can detect and track drones based on their movement patterns and signatures. Example: Aveillant’s Gamekeeper Holographic Radar .
  • Radio Frequency (RF) Detectors : Systems like Dedrone’s RF Sensor detect drones based on their communication signals.
  • DroneGun : A handheld device that looks like a gun. It jams the radio signals of a drone, causing it to land or return to its point of origin.
  • Battelle DroneDefender : Another rifle-like device that disrupts a drone’s control functions.
  • GPS Spoofing : Devices that can send misleading signals to drones, making them think they’re at a different location. This can divert them from their intended path.
  • Raytheon’s Phaser : A high-powered microwave radiation system that can disable drones.
  • Boeing Compact Laser Weapon System (CLWS) : Uses lasers to target and disable drones.
  • SkyWall : A handheld compressed-air launcher that shoots nets to capture drones.
  • DroneCatcher : This is a drone that captures other drones using a net.
  • Birds of Prey : Some organizations, like certain police forces in the Netherlands, have trained eagles to capture drones out of the sky. While this is more of an organic solution, it has been shown to be effective in certain scenarios.
  • Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) : Devices that can emit a burst of electromagnetic radiation to disable a drone’s electronics. It’s a more aggressive and less commonly used approach due to potential broader impacts on other electronics.
  • Acoustic Systems : Systems like the Aeroscope by DJI can identify drones based on their acoustic signatures.
  • Drones with AI and Machine Learning : Some drones are equipped with AI to detect, track, and intercept unauthorized drones autonomously.
  • Integrated Systems : Companies like Fortem Technologies offer integrated solutions that combine radar, camera detection, and AI for both detection and neutralization using drones equipped with nets.

3. Tinted Windows & Privacy Screens

Use dark tinted windows or smart glass that can change opacity to prevent outsiders from seeing inside. If you are chartering a yacht it may not have privacy windows and screens in place. In that case here are some portably options the yacht management company can implement:

  • Temporary Window Films : These are adhesive or cling-based films that can be applied to windows to increase tint or opacity. They are available in various shades and can be removed without causing damage. They’re a quick way to add privacy without a permanent change.
  • Roll-up Privacy Screens : Similar to roll-up blinds or shades, these screens can be installed temporarily to cover windows or open deck areas. They can be stored when not in use.
  • Pop-up Privacy Tents : If specific areas on the deck need to be shielded, pop-up tents or cabanas can provide immediate privacy. They can be quickly set up and taken down as needed.
  • Portable Smart Glass Panels : These are stand-alone panels that operate on the same principle as smart glass windows. They can be set up when required and can change from transparent to opaque at the click of a button.
  • Curtains and Drapes : Temporary curtain rods or tension rods can be installed, and curtains or drapes can be hung to shield the interior. They’re also useful for adding a touch of decor.
  • Folding Screens : Often used indoors for privacy (like in changing areas), these can be moved to where they are needed, both inside or on deck, and then stored when not in use.
  • Expandable Fencing or Barriers : Similar to what’s used at events or by cafes for outdoor seating, these can be set up around specific deck areas to block the line of sight.
  • Umbrellas or Parasols : Large, heavy-duty umbrellas can be set up on deck to block views from specific angles, especially from overhead drones.
  • Canvas Drop Cloths : Typically used for painting or as makeshift sails, these cloths can be draped or hung to create barriers. They’re relatively inexpensive and can be stored compactly.
  • Camouflage Netting : This is not just for military use. Lightweight and easy to deploy, camo netting can obstruct views while allowing for some airflow. It can be especially useful in more rugged or natural anchorages.

4. Use of Decoys

This works well and the technique is mainly used by high profile celebrities. In places where disembarkation might attract attention, use decoys or alternate exits from the yacht to mislead paparazzi. Here are some typical methods:

  • Hire a lookalike or “double” of the high-profile guest onboard. Coordinate the disembarkation of this double from the primary exit of the yacht, while the actual guest exits through an alternate route or remains onboard. The paparazzi will focus on the double, giving the real guest more privacy.
  • Organize for multiple groups of guests or crew to disembark at various times and from different exits. The paparazzi won’t know which group to focus on, dispersing their attention and possibly missing the main individual of interest.
  • Use something visually striking or seemingly newsworthy as a decoy. For instance, have a small “performance” or “event” on one part of the yacht, drawing attention and cameras there while the high-profile individual discreetly exits elsewhere.
  • Leak a fake itinerary or schedule to the press, indicating that the high-profile individual will be disembarking at a later time or different location. When paparazzi gather at the indicated time or place, the individual can quietly exit well before or after, or at an alternate spot.
  • If the yacht has multiple tenders or small boats, use them simultaneously. Have one or more tenders depart as if they’re transporting the high-profile individual, while they actually leave on another. Paparazzi may follow the decoy vessels, allowing the guest to reach their destination undisturbed.

5. Private Tenders

For trips to and from the shore, use covered or enclosed tenders. This can prevent clear shots and make it difficult for paparazzi to get a clear view. Here are some popular examples of enclosed tenders:

  • This is a luxury tender with a sleek design. Its enclosed cabin offers protection and privacy, while its large windows provide panoramic views.
  • As the name suggests, this is a limousine-style tender. It boasts a high level of craftsmanship and an enclosed passenger cabin with tinted windows for privacy.
  • Compass Tenders has a history of building custom tenders, and they can create models with fully enclosed passenger areas to cater to the specific needs of the client.
  • This model from Pascoe International has options for a fully enclosed cabin. Pascoe is known for its luxury tenders, and this model can be customized for specific needs.
  • Vikal produces bespoke tenders, with some designs featuring an enclosed limousine style. Their enclosed models are tailor-made, providing both privacy and comfort.
  • Known for its patented hull design, the Rafnar 1100 offers a comfortable ride even in rough seas. The cabin is enclosed, ensuring passengers remain dry and private.

6. Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)

Ensure that all crew members and guests sign NDAs. This can prevent inside leaks about whereabouts or activities on board. Below is a sample NDA. 7. Digital Privacy

Use secure communication methods, encrypted channels, and ensure that the yacht’s Wi-Fi network is secure to prevent electronic eavesdropping or location tracking. Here are the main elements to consider:

  • Satellite Communication : Ensure that the Satellite Communication system (often referred to as SatCom) uses encrypted channels. Various companies offer end-to-end encrypted satellite communication services.
  • Radio : Use digital radios that support encryption. Analog radios can be easily intercepted, whereas digital radios offer better privacy options.
  • VPN (Virtual Private Network) : Use a VPN service when accessing the internet. This encrypts data between your yacht and the internet, preventing eavesdropping.
  • Encrypted Messaging and Calls : Use applications such as Signal, WhatsApp, or Telegram for end-to-end encrypted messaging and calls.
  • Secure Email : Consider email services that offer encryption, like ProtonMail or Tutanota.
  • Strong Passwords : Always set a strong, unique password for your Wi-Fi network.
  • Regular Updates : Ensure that the router’s firmware is regularly updated. Manufacturers often release updates to patch vulnerabilities.
  • Separate Networks : Have separate Wi-Fi networks for guests and crew. This ensures that guests don’t have access to the yacht’s main network systems.
  • Wi-Fi Encryption : Use WPA3 encryption, the latest and most secure Wi-Fi encryption standard, if possible. If your equipment only supports WPA2, make sure it’s set to WPA2-PSK (AES) and avoid using WEP or WPA2-TKIP as they are less secure.
  • Disable SSID Broadcast : By turning off SSID broadcasting, you make your network invisible to casual devices searching for Wi-Fi networks. Only those who know the network name can connect, offering an extra layer of security.
  • Firewall : Ensure the yacht’s network has a robust firewall in place to filter out unwanted traffic and potential threats.
  • Turn Off AIS : The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services. Turning it off can prevent location tracking, but be sure to comply with maritime laws.
  • Geo-Fencing : Use geo-fencing technologies that alert you if someone unknown enters a defined vicinity of the yacht.
  • Secure All Devices : Ensure that all devices connected to the yacht’s network, like smartphones, laptops, and tablets, have updated software and security features enabled.
  • Regular Audits : Conduct regular security audits to identify potential vulnerabilities in the system.
  • Crew Training : Regularly train the crew about the importance of cybersecurity, teaching them best practices such as not opening suspicious emails or links.

8. Use Professional Security

Employ a professional security team that’s trained to deal with paparazzi. They can handle situations discreetly without causing a scene. High-end professional security teams will provide the following:

  • A professional security team will continuously assess the environment and situations for potential risks. This proactive approach means that they can often anticipate the presence of paparazzi before they become a problem.
  • Trained security personnel know how to de-escalate potentially volatile situations. They can approach paparazzi or overly enthusiastic fans calmly and professionally, reducing the chance of an incident escalating.
  • These skills are crucial, especially in situations where there’s a risk of physical confrontations or when the paparazzi use aggressive tactics.
  • A well-informed security team understands the legal rights of both the protected individuals and the paparazzi. They’ll know when the paparazzi are overstepping boundaries and can take appropriate measures.
  • They can advise on where and when it’s legally appropriate to take action against intrusive photographers.
  • In many situations, especially if a high-profile event is taking place, local police or maritime authorities might be involved. A professional security team will have experience liaising with these authorities, ensuring smooth coordination and response.
  • A top-notch security team knows that their primary duty is to their client and that causing a scene can sometimes attract more attention – which is the opposite of what’s desired. Their training emphasizes discreet interventions and actions that prioritize the privacy and safety of their clients.
  • They’re also trained to handle situations without drawing attention, which is particularly valuable when trying to avoid the prying lenses of the paparazzi.
  • Modern security often incorporates technology. Surveillance systems, drones, or even underwater sensors (for yachts) can be used to detect and deter paparazzi.
  • A professional security team will be versed in the deployment and use of such technologies, ensuring an extra layer of protection.
  • Regularly, the security team will engage in mock drills to simulate potential paparazzi encounters or breaches of privacy. This keeps their skills sharp and ensures they are always ready to handle real-world situations.
  • The paparazzi often use innovative and sometimes sneaky tactics to get their shots. A security team familiar with these tactics can counteract them more effectively.
  • Depending on the profile of the individual being protected, the security team can develop bespoke security protocols, ensuring that vulnerabilities specific to that individual’s lifestyle or activities are addressed.

9. Discreet Travel Plans

Avoid publicizing your itinerary. Sharing details about upcoming destinations can give paparazzi a head start. Keep the following in mind when organizing your plans:

  • Paparazzi are always on the lookout for information about the whereabouts of celebrities and high-profile individuals. A tip about an upcoming destination or schedule can be a goldmine for them.
  • They often have networks of informants, including airport staff, hotel employees, or even local residents, who might tip them off when a celebrity is spotted. If the paparazzi already know where a celebrity is headed, they can pre-position themselves and be ready to snap photos upon arrival.
  • Beyond paparazzi, publicizing one’s itinerary can also attract unwanted attention from overzealous fans or individuals with malicious intent.
  • It’s also a matter of personal privacy. Many high-profile individuals value their private moments, and by keeping their itineraries under wraps, they can enjoy destinations without the constant flash of cameras.
  • Use Aliases : When making reservations, whether it’s for hotels, restaurants, or other services, using aliases can throw paparazzi off the trail.
  • Travel During Off-Peak Hours : Choosing to arrive or depart during odd hours can reduce the chance of running into paparazzi.
  • Charter Services : Utilizing private charter services, whether it’s planes, yachts, or cars, can reduce exposure. These services often prioritize client confidentiality.
  • Use Multiple Itineraries : Sending out decoy itineraries or using multiple routes can confuse those trying to track movements.
  • Limit Social Media Exposure : Even if one doesn’t publicize the itinerary, posting real-time updates or photos on social media can give away one’s location. Consider posting photos or updates after leaving the location or using features that hide real-time location.
  • Ensure that the team or staff are aware of the importance of keeping travel plans confidential. This includes personal assistants, managers, agents, and even the security team.
  • Staff training can emphasize the value of discretion and the risks associated with leaks.
  • While not always possible, especially for work-related commitments, being spontaneous with travel plans can be an effective way to dodge paparazzi. Last-minute changes or decisions can be harder to track.
  • For those who are highly concerned about privacy, employing counter-surveillance teams can help identify if someone is tracking or following them. This team can ensure no paparazzi or unwanted individuals are tailing them during their travels.

10. Natural Barriers

When selecting a mooring spot, consider natural barriers like cliffs, trees, or rock formations which can obstruct the view from afar, making it challenging for paparazzi to get a good shot.

  • Cliffs : These are effective because they are tall and steep. If you moor your yacht close to a cliff face, it can shield the yacht from the sightlines of paparazzi who are on the other side. Additionally, cliffs make it harder for paparazzi to position themselves at advantageous points due to the rugged and often inaccessible terrain.
  • Trees : Dense trees or mangroves can create a natural screen. Even if paparazzi manage to get close, trees can obstruct a clear shot, causing photographs to be less valuable.
  • Rock Formations : These can be particularly effective in water bodies where large rock outcrops emerge from the sea. Mooring behind such formations can shield the yacht from various angles.
  • Natural barriers not only obstruct the view but also make it physically challenging for paparazzi to position themselves. This could involve dangerous climbs, navigating through dense foliage, or contending with unpredictable sea conditions around rocky areas.
  • Such barriers also make it difficult for paparazzi to quickly change positions, meaning if they’re in a less advantageous spot, they’re likely stuck there.
  • In the modern age, drones have become a tool for paparazzi. Natural barriers, especially dense ones like trees or uneven ones like cliffs, can interfere with drone navigation, making it risky for paparazzi to fly them too close.
  • Even within the natural barrier, the positioning of the yacht matters. For instance, positioning the yacht so that the sun is behind it can further hinder clear photography due to glare and backlighting.
  • Making use of the yacht’s own structures, like deploying awnings or shades, can further enhance privacy when combined with natural barriers.
  • When moored in such secluded spots, it’s essential to have security measures in place, as they can also be isolated, which could pose other security risks. This could include onboard security personnel, surveillance systems, and alert systems.
  • While using natural barriers is effective, it’s essential to ensure that the yacht’s presence doesn’t harm the local ecosystem, especially in areas with mangroves, coral reefs, or protected marine life.
  • Adhering to local mooring regulations and guidelines is a must to protect both the environment and the reputation of those on board.
  • Beyond privacy, mooring near natural barriers often offers an enhanced experience. These spots tend to be more serene, picturesque, and can provide unique opportunities for exploration and recreation.

Navigating the vast waters should be an experience of tranquility, adventure, and, most importantly, privacy. As superyachts become more common and the paparazzi more resourceful, prioritizing discretion becomes indispensable. By leveraging these top 10 methods, one can sail confidently, knowing that their moments of relaxation and enjoyment remain their own, untouched by prying eyes. After all, the true luxury of a superyacht experience lies in undisturbed peace amidst the beauty of the ocean.

What Life Might Look Like on the World’s Biggest Yacht

Portrait of Adriane Quinlan

On a Tuesday morning in September, a six-foot-long plastic model of a boat sat on the second floor of the Explorers Club, looking a little like a beached Orca, sleek and out of place in the tweedy boardroom. The tiny yacht had traveled to East 70th Street from Los Angeles and, before that, made stops in Monaco and Zurich, Cannes, and West Palm Beach — a prop to entice buyers who can spend $10 million on a cabin in the world’s biggest yacht. If it gets made. The boat will be called the Ulyssia and it’s the passion project of Frank Binder, a billionaire from the Merck clan with a thing for boats (he once owned a shipyard in Monaco). Lenny Kravitz, his friend, is onboard to help design interiors. (“He’s a genius.”)

Binder has been doing a world tour to find other buyers — who might be hard to meet. Maintenance hovers around 3 percent a year, or $300,000 for that $10 million one-bedroom. It’s a big ask, especially for a boat that, if he does get recruits, won’t launch until 2028. To help, Binder brought on two former executives from the World , the luxury liner that was the first — and only — to prove rich people want to live … at sea, all year. (It launched in 2002, is still sold out, and has yet to snag on an iceberg or go bankrupt.)

Renato Chizzola , a senior vice-president for the Ulyssia who worked as the general manager of the World for five years, spoke to Curbed about the terrors of elephant seals and why he once hired Israeli snipers to come onboard.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

What did your job on the World look like??

I was in charge of lifestyle, expedition, everything — even the kitchen. You have a captain who’s the master of the vessel, and he ultimately will have the last word on safety, security, where we go, where we can’t go. But then you also need to have somebody who has grown up in a galley carrying luggage. I’m 60 in October. When I was 27, I said, “Okay, how can I see the world without having money?” So in 1993, I was hired on the Queen Elizabeth II , then went to hotels, cruises, and in 46 years I traveled to 186 countries. I was allowed to live onboard and basically extend any service, any dream that a resident had.

yacht privacy location

What’s the difference between this superyacht and the World ?

The World is now 23 years old. She was created in the late ’80s. She looks like a cruise ship. And the  Ulyssia is a yacht — the designer says this is his masterpiece.

We never had many amenities on the World . Here, we have a deli. We have a library with a card and games room. We have a table-tennis room. We have two paddle-tennis courts all inside, a multipurpose sports deck up there where the helicopters are, two hangers, two submarines to go down to the ocean, seven restaurants.

Then, we have this inflatable marina off the back of the boat. Imagine we’re near Bermuda. It’s a beautiful day. The sea is calm. We stop and we inflate this — it takes an hour — and we have tenders. You can go diving right there off the ship. The sea is yours. This marina is something the World could never ever have done, because there’s no space in the boat to keep that. The World was more elderly, a bit elderly retired. This is way younger. Why? Because we have so many amenities and offer adventure. Here, we are offering fewer apartments with more space. The balconies are huge. Luxury, for them, means space, time and getting whatever they wish, whenever, wherever. Freedom.

yacht privacy location

Freedom , in a contained location —

Yes, and in a safe environment, completely protected against any danger. If a resident says, “I want to bring my family there, I want to be safe, I want to have no worries,” safety needs to be core to us. They want the freedom to do what they do at home — to run around with suits, jewelry. And if they are smart enough to say, “I want to go and see real scenarios, not luxury hotels,” they can go places where there’s no luxury and see how the world really works. That’s what this community wants.

Sounds like a security nightmare.

We will hire ex-Mossad physically, to be on the ship. On the World , we partnered with Marine Guard, one of the world’s best safety and security companies . It provides technical and physical support. And whenever we went to critical places — for example, when we went through the Gulf of Aden, I brought in Israeli snipers to come on the boat. Nobody, no pirate on earth can come in past them. Then on shore excursions, we have every form of security that you can imagine. Satellite images. Images underwater, over water. When we went to Antarctica, to the Northwest Passage — meeting with the Inuits, the Aborigines — you need people who know them. You need people who safeguard you. In the Antarctic, you are only allowed to go with Zodiacs to the beaches. You need people who know that, who know the sea lions, the penguins. We bring them onboard — 20 or 25 people who know everything about every area. And when we do expeditions, we bring on EYOS, one of the greatest expedition leaders in the world, which goes to places like the Titanic .

Is this, like the Titanic , experimental in any way?

No, there are similar yachts. But in four years, when she will hopefully leave port, she will be the greenest yacht of this size ever built. And at that time, we may build for whatever is available in terms of fuel, whether it’s methanol or nuclear. There are vessels already going nuclear, military vessels.

But isn’t this all risky?

It’s the opposite. You will see more and more environments like this at sea. Why? Because you can escape anything! If there’s an outbreak in New York, a big virus, you just won’t go there. If there’s a war there, you just don’t go there. If there’s a storm, you don’t go there.

So this will be a way for the global elite, basically, to pay to avoid any problem.

Is it going to be a one percent community? Yes, obviously, but they need to do good around the world, otherwise they cannot come to the community.

Imagine the following. We will have a medical center onboard. We have MRI machines. We have a dentistry. Our doctors, when we go to the west coast of Africa, to Senegal, we can have our doctors go out and help. And as we go around the world, we will help to map the ocean floor. We’ll have tools available to measure and send these to oceanic institutions that then take this data. So we are helping to make the world a better place. And that’s the legacy.

How are you going to gauge whether the people who want to live here also want to do good?

There’s a very tough background check before being allowed to buy. So can it be that a Colombian drug lord or a Russian weapons dealer comes and says, “Oh, I’m going to take ten?” No, that can’t happen. We’re not a community for people from mainland China who don’t speak English and want to spit around. Or aggressive Russians. We are not a community for sheikhs from any Arab countries. And I have nothing against the Chinese and Russians. I love everybody. I’ve been everywhere. But they just don’t fit here, and they won’t come. We want like-minded golf players, tennis players, joggers, bikers, F1 drivers.

We will have roughly 30 to 35 percent Europeans, 30 to 35 percent North Americans, including from Canada, possibly a few from Mexico City, a few from São Paulo. Then we have about 20 percent from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. Then we expect to have about 10 percent of people from all over, we don’t know where. It could be anywhere.

They’ll need a certain amount of money to get into this boat and I assume, therefore, that you can’t be that picky.

No, we can’t. But we try to be. It’s a balance. We meet them three, four, five, six times. We invite them, show them something, then they say, “Oh, I trust these people. I believe in them.” It’s a slow process.

Can a buyer get kicked off?

Oh, absolutely.

What’s the justice system?

There’s a board that’s voted in and we have our chairman on the board. Almost all of the members are people who have either been on yachts, have their own yacht, or have led organizations.

If people have their own yachts, why would they sign up for this?

They might have a beautiful yacht of a hundred meters, but they can’t hire all these education guides, explorers all the time. We have 22 guest suites. Imagine we’re coming to Japan. Blossom season. We bring an ex Japanese prime minister onboard, maybe a three-star Michelin chef. We bring them on, let’s say, three weeks before. And they lecture. We can have experts speak about anything. Volcanoes, health and wellness, food and beverage, politics, archeology.

And they have you, who’s been to 186 countries.

Exactly. So when I do speak to people who want to buy and invite them for lunch or a coffee, they listen because they know, Oh, this guy has been there. You don’t need to tell them something that you think can happen. You can actually tell them a story. When I went to Antarctica the last time, in 2009, on the way back to the Zodiac, I am walking and these big elephant seals — those are the big guys, like three tons and ten feet long — and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there’s a big sound like MWUGHOWUGH and a big one came up, out of the sand. I stood there frozen. These are moments when you think, Is this really happening to me? How fortunate, how lucky am I to be able to experience moments like this? And all the wealthy people say the same.
