The Beginners Guide to Yacht Week Croatia

The Yacht Week, wow! The trip, well experience, of a lifetime! Unlike most adventures, The Yacht Week is not a single event that only happens once a year. Instead, it’s a week long epic boat party that is stretched out throughout several months in your choice of either Croatia, Greece, Montenegro or BVI Caribbean. It’s up to you to decide which week you’d like to go and in which country. Being that Croatia is the ORIGINAL route, I felt that it was only right to start what could be a series of adventures  where it all started.

Pick A Route

The Yacht Week Croatia is here to make life harder on you by giving you not one, not two, but THREE different routes to choose from. Due to an increasingly large interest in sailing (and partying on) the Adriatic sea, one route is not enough. They now offer the black, the red and the Ultra route.

The black and red routes are identical, except they operate in different directions. The black route is not only the best route (based off of public opinion), but it’s the original route. There are typically 30-50 boats sailing this route, which currently makes it the most popular out of the three. My group decided to go on this route, and we did not regret it AT ALL.

The red route is the newest Croatian Route that sails from Dubrovnik to Trogir. Since it’s still new, it typically has about 20-25 boats sailing this route, making it the least popular amongst the three.

Croatia Ultra is the wildest route out of the three. If you’ve ever been to the world famous Ultra Music Festival and want to relive all the madness while sailing the seas in between sets, then this is the route for you. This wild route is similar in popularity as the black route and typically has about 30-50 boats sailing.

Cabin Vs. Yacht

Each yacht accommodates approximately between 6 to 12 people. The main difference between choosing a cabin or a yacht is whether or not you’re planning on filling the cabins on the yacht with your own crew or if you’d like TYW’s talent to place you (and your cabin crew mate) on a boat with strangers, who will end up becoming family. Each yacht has 3-5 cabins depending on the size, and if you decide to go with the entire yacht package, then it will be your responsibility to find crew members to fill those cabins.

One thing to note is that TYW prefers to keep an equal gender ratio on each yacht, so if it’s uneven then there may be an additional penalty charge.

My crew consisted of 4 mermaids, so we decided to go with the cabin option. We purchased 2 cabins on a standard yacht, which ended up being one of the smaller yachts, but we were okay with that. We were crewed up with 4 mermen from Australia and the funnest (not biased, I promise) skipper from South Africa.

To Hostess Or Not To Hostess

Having a hostess throughout the week is optional, and to be honest – a tough decision. It really all depends on whether or not you plan on eating full meals throughout the week.

What does a hostess do? A hostess is pretty much a live-in culinary genius. They will shop for you and prepare ALL breakfasts, lunches and TWO dinners throughout the week.

Considering the fact that we were living in our bathing suits for a week, our group opted out of paying the extra money for a host. We knew that we would want to have a light breakfast and lunch and then go out and have dinner in town every day. When we first arrived, we had to wait a few hours before being let on board, so our group got together and went grocery shopping as a whole. We bought daily lunch supplies, including hamburger patties, pasta, taco meat, etc., and split that cost amongst each other evenly. It turned out to be around $35 per person for 8 people. Not bad at all. We then each separately bought our own personal stash of snacks and alcohol, which also was not too expensive.

One thing we had to consider was to make sure our skipper was fed every meal throughout the entire week. Yes, that is YOUR responsibility. So although we split the cost evenly between 8 people, we made sure we had enough food to feed a group of 9 people for each meal. We also took turns making breakfast for our skipper every day, which mainly consisted of scrambled eggs – so that wasn’t too hard.

Overall, I’m glad we didn’t splurge on a hostess. Although, if you’re the type to rather be pampered, then spending a little extra money for one isn’t a bad idea.

Not exaggerating, but how you pack for the week will make you or break you.. or your toes. The cabins on each yacht are TINY and are a shared space between two people, so it’s important to pack smart and light. First rule of thumb when packing – NO HARD SUITCASES. Your luggage needs to stay in your assigned cabin, so be smart with the size and material used. The best type of luggage to use is a duffel bag that can easily be folded and placed under your mattress. I had a couple of tight layover flights before and after TYW that I didn’t want to risk missing any due to having to check in a bag, so I opted for this spacious Olympia 8-pocket carry-on duffel from Amazon.

Second rule of thumb – BE ORGANIZED and understand that a box of Ziploc Freezer bags is your best friend and will possibly be your savior.

Confused? Don’t worry – I’ll explain.

Day 8 , TYW smartphone app, releases a daily itinerary of where you’ll be on each day and what type of events are lined up for that day. So based off of that you can pretty much figure out which outfits you’ll need for each day. There’s no need to over pack because it’s likely that you’ll be in your bathing suits all day, every day and sometimes even throughout the night.

Ziploc bags are going to make your getting ready process a lot easier. They are like packing cubes except better because you can suction the air out of them to make more room in your duffel. Each one of my freezer bags was labeled in permanent marker by day and held 3 outfits: a bathing suit, a daytime outfit for possible land expeditions and a night-time party outfit. I separated my toiletries by putting my face, body and shower materials into smaller freezer bags. I ended up packing the toiletries bags in my duffel pockets to keep them separate from my clothes. Once I got to my cabin, I was able to unpack my duffel and place each Ziploc bag in order by day on our shelf, which made it easier for me to get dressed every day.

Side note: You most likely will not be able to use any hair dryers or irons on board, so I’d recommend saving room in your luggage by not packing any. Instead, bring hair creams and other hair essentials that’ll keep the daily natural look looking fresh to death.

Budgeting in real life is hard, but budgeting for TYW is even harder. To be honest, it’s hard to figure out exactly how much money you’ll need throughout the week, but if you play it smart then you won’t need much.

Aside from spending money for the week, you’ll need Yacht deposit money and Kitty Pool money – both are due in cash upon arrival.

Yacht Deposit – This amount differs depending on the size of your yacht. If you rented a Catamaran yacht for the week, it could be thousands of dollars per person. Our yacht was the standard basic option, so our deposit was only €375 per person. Since TYW is originally a European company, the deposit had to be paid in EURO’s and it was given to our skipper on the first day. Keep in mind that if you don’t break anything on the yacht, you’ll get your deposit back at the end of the trip.

The currency used for everything else is Croatian Kuna (HRK). Since my national currency is USD, I was required to exchange my cash into Euro and then from Euro to Kuna. To avoid additional exchange rate fees, try to go to your local bank before your trip and exchange your currency directly into Kuna’s.

Kitty Fund – This fund covers most additional costs for the week, which include fuel, water, docking fees, and some water taxis. We gave our skipper a total of 1220 HRK (roughly about 184 USD) each and he paid these fees for us. If there is any money left over at the end of the week, then the skipper will distribute the money evenly between all crew members. We used a lot of water, (showers, washing dishes, etc) so we didn’t have any money from the kitty fund left over.

Since both the deposit and kitty fund differ depending on route and boat size, you can expect an email from TYW a week or two before your trip with exact details on how much both expected totals are. My group received our email 10 days before our trip, so don’t expect too much of a heads up.

Grocery Shopping – Each yacht is only stocked up with a few essentials. With possibly 9 other roommates, it’s easy to run out of daily necessities. So other than food and snacks for the week, make sure to add toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, garbage bags, dish washing soap, a sponge and plenty of water bottle cases to the group shopping list for your arrival day.

Other than the deposit, kitty fund and some cash for your grocery shopping – you’ll need some spending money. Since we went grocery shopping on day 1 for breakfast and lunch supplies, we did not have to spend that much money on food. Grocery stores also sell alcohol for pretty cheap, so we each stocked up on a couple bottles of the drink of our choice and some mixers. So not only did we have enough alcohol to day party every day, but we were able to pregame before every outing. We went out for dinner almost every night, but it did not break the bank. Depending on how much you plan on eating out or drinking, I’d say about $75-$100 a day budget is pretty reasonable. Just don’t forget to include your skipper and your hostess if you have one in your budget plans since you are responsible for paying for their meals.

What To Bring Vs. What To Buy There

The marinas you’ll dock at throughout the week will have small bodega-like grocery stores that have almost everything you’ll need, so save room in your luggage and don’t pack too much.

What to bring with you:

• Plastic flip flops or sandals that you can wear on the boat or in the shower.
• Reusable insulated stainless steel tumbler. Not only does this keep your drink cold in the summer heat, but it keeps plastic out of the sea.
• Skincare products. Don’t expect to find your daily high-end facial moisturizer on the shelves, so if your skincare regime includes specifics – bring them.
• Electronics. You’re going to be in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, so if you plan on blasting music while still having a full phone battery life bring a car charger, a battery pack , and an auxiliary cord.
• Handheld battery operated fan to cool off throughout the day.
• FLAGS! Not only will they be used to rep your country, but they can also help you identify which boat is yours during that late night walk home when all the boats start to look the same.

What to buy there:

• Sunscreen and suntan lotion.
• Float. You can either buy these at the local bodega or even possibly get free recycled floats from the crews leaving the week before. Just make sure you get it on Day 1 during your first market run because you’ll be floating around almost every day.
• Shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
• Bug repellent.
• A Captain’s hat for obvious reasons.
• Beach towel – The markets have plenty of towels and your skipper and/or host will give you one large and one medium sized bath towel for showers.
• A pump. Believe me when I say that blowing up multiple floats is hard work. I almost fainted a few times before finding out that each boat has an emergency pump under one of the seats. Look for it and use it before manually pumping. You’ll thank me for this.

Planning Ahead For Emergencies

If you ask any skipper at TYW, they will tell you that at least one person breaks their toe during each week because heavy objects in a tight space while on wavy water and being drunk do not mix that well. So, in other words hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

A few things to keep your emergency worries at ease:

Travel Insurance. Just buy it. Travel insurance covers unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage and some other losses incurred during the trip. On either the fourth or fifth night of our trip, two of my crew members decided to drunkenly jump over steel bollard on their way back to our yacht after a night out. It ended with one of the guys being rushed to the hospital by our skipper to get stitches. Another girl randomly slipped on her yacht and sprained her ankle. You just never know.

Tweezers. Unless you’re a bushy-browed babe like me, you don’t really think of packing tweezers for emergencies. Croatia is full of tiny spiny sea urchins and it’s very easy to get stung by them. In fact, I accidentally stepped on one while hanging out at the local beach and ended up having 10, yes that’s right – 10 , splinter-like spikes in my foot. Although it ruined my day, having tweezers nearby helped me pick each spike out one by one.

Nausea and sleeping aids. You’re going to be living on a rocking boat for a week, so expect a little nausea. I don’t typically get sea sick, but I woke up on the second day, took a bite out of a banana and immediately got sick. Needless to say, I didn’t eat anymore bananas that trip. Dramamine is a great motion sickness prevention medicine that can be bought over-the-counter. It also comes in non-drowsy so it shouldn’t stop you from having all that daytime fun. I’d recommend stocking up in both non-drowsy and regular Dramamine, or something similar, because the motion of the boat was the worst at night. The high winds would make our boat dramatically rock side to side when it was docked. It was so bad that I woke up every day with a new unexplained bruise, which probably came from unknowingly bumping into my cabin mate throughout the night.

Emergency first-aid kit. This is a no-brainer, so it doesn’t even really need an explanation. Every yacht should have a first aid kit on deck, but it never hurts to have extra band aids handy. You, or one of your crew members, will probably get cut at some point of the trip, so I’d recommend bringing a travel-sized first-aid kit with you for those small emergencies.

Emergen-C. There’s no doubt in my mind that you’re going to get sick, whether you end up swapping spit with someone else or not. Almost everyone went home without a voice or with some sort of bronchitis. Apparently, the hacking cough that you most likely will end the trip with is a well-known cold amongst yacht weekers called the skippers cough . That’s what happens when you have a mix of boys, girls, alcohol and lots of bad decisions in a confined area for a week. Pack some Emergen-C and drink it on the daily.

Don’t Forget To Tip 

I cannot stress this enough, treat treat TREAT your skipper and hostess well and make sure you tip both of them at the end of the trip.

You’d be surprised with how many people “forget” to tip their skippers and hosts. Hosts wake up early to cook for your crew EVERY. DAY., and skippers literally have the navigation of your week in their hands.

Tipping Etiquette:

Pay them in either USD or Euro’s. Most skippers and hosts don’t live in Croatia, so they don’t typically like being paid in Croatian Kuna’s.

Pay them separately. If you have both a skipper and a host, don’t give one lump sum. Hand both of them their tip separately.

Depending on how well they did, tip about $80-$100 each. So in total, that’s $160-$200 per person for tip. Unless your crew went crazy and broke a bunch of stuff on the yacht, you should get your deposit back at the end of the trip. Since that was originally paid in Euro’s, we each ended up taking 100 euros from that and handing it to our skipper before heading to the airport.

Let Loose And Have Fun

Leave your worries at home and just have fun. TYW is not the time to think about work and it’s definitely not the time to think about morals. (hehe, jk mom)

You’ll most likely see a lot of random hookups, nudity and most definitely some crude behavior. So leave your judgemental behavior at home, relax and float your way into the happy yacht week abyss.

But most importantly – JUST HAVE FUN!

Yacht Week Croatia is a seven-day motor-assisted sailing experience that takes place once a year at various locations in the Croatian Adriatic. The main organizer is European Travel Ventures. Current main destinations are:

• Greece (Athens route) 
• the Caribbean (BVI route), 
• Montenegro (Adriatic route), and 
• Croatia (Original route, Ultra festival route, and Dubrovnik route). 

It is an authentic marine festival because you get to experience sailing and cruising on the gorgeous waters in one week. 

The routes of the Week include Split, Šipan, Mljet, Korčula, Hvar, Vis, and Brač on their maps. The destinations vary every year, but one of the major cities such as the city of Split, Croatia always remains on the Yacht Week route. The route you sail depends on the destination you choose.

The yacht you rented docks in a different destination every day, which allows you to see and experience many things during the week. You can see historical sites, natural beauties, try out delicious food, various activities, and so on. Everyone will find something for themselves.

What to Bring on a Yacht Week

Take your nice clothes.

There will be some hot days on the boat, so flip-flops are a necessity. However, Yacht Week parties sometimes require formal attire. You’ll dock the yacht and go to a private garden party, or visit places like Carpe Diem in Hvar, one of the best clubs in Europe.

What’s more, if you decide to go to a fancy restaurant, sightseeing or visiting museums, make sure to have your nice clothes. They’ll probably kick you out if you show up in shorts and a sleeveless shirt.

Bring Medications

You probably didn’t think about it, but minimal sleep and alcohol don’t do good to your immune system. Neither does sharing water bottles and cutlery (with the people you may not know).

Moreover, seasickness isn’t that uncommon, so prepare your bags. Also, you might decide to cook on board and accidentally cut your finger. Therefore, take your first aid kit, all the vitamins and medications you find useful and make sure you know your first aid drill.

Have a Car-Charger Adapter

Standard yachts often have only 12-volt power outlets. If you’re a group of electronic device maniacs, you’ll need electricity. So, consider buying a solar-powered charger and look for a car-charger adapter that will help you with your laptops, smartphones, or air pumps for your unicorn floaties.

One thing to avoid is a hairdryer. The outlets won’t handle as much electricity. Plus, you’ll probably spend half of the time in the sea, anyway.

How to Book a Yacht Week Croatia

Once you get to know what essentials you should bring, it’s time to book the yacht. The bookings start in October, so you’ll have to hurry to book the next year’s sailing tour. After you decide which route to take, you can click on “Book now” to go with the purchase. 

It will give you two options: “Book a full yacht” or “Book a cabin on a yacht.” You can book the latter only for specific routes, whereas you’ll need to book a full boat for your Croatian vacation.

Next, you’ll need to pick a Standard, Premium, or Premium Plus option. The first option is a yacht selected for you that can accommodate up to 9 people. The second and third option offers you to handpick your own boat. There can be 11 people on your Premium or Premium Plus yacht.

The best ones to choose are Premium Plus yachts. You’ll have plenty of space, they have bigger bedroom cabins. Trust us, you’ll need that kind of comfort after two nights of drinking. Also, the rear back area is an excellent spot to sunbathe and to socialize, if you decide to go on a cruise with people other than your friends. It can happen since there has to be a 50-50 gender ratio. Sometimes an exception is possible, but it only benefits the female population.

Pro tip: Let the Yacht Week crew assign you a skipper. You can’t expect your skipper to enjoy vast amounts of alcohol and sail the whole week. European Travel Ventures are real professionals, and they’ll give you the best skippers available.

How Much Will It Cost

The cruise usually starts and ends on Saturdays. The price for a Standard cruise is between 700 and 1,030 Euros per person.

The price for a Premium or a Premium Plus cruise, on the other hand, starts at 872 Euros per person. It climbs up to 1,999 Euros per person. Again, make sure to book in advance due to high demand.

You’ll need about 2,500 Euros for a week. It includes the stay, costs, and basic drinks onboard without going to fancy clubs and restaurants. 

There’s a final party for crews of all 50 boats that sail during the Week. It’s a perfect opportunity for another get-together before the last night on board.

THE TRUTH ABOUT YACHT WEEK | 6 Things To Know Before You Go

Last summer, my friend and I spent a week exploring Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro then met up with Kiersten ‘The Blonde Abroad’ and the rest of our all-girls crew for a week of sailing in Greece with The Yacht Week . As a whole, I loved the experience, but there were several things I wish I would have know prior to booking the trip that would have allowed me to enjoy it to the fullest. So here are 6 things you should know before you go on Yacht Week.

1) The Yacht Week will be more expensive than you think!

I budgeted around $75 a day for food and drinks for our seven day trip and quickly realized that that was not going to be enough. Upon arriving, we were told we needed to go shopping for costumes for the sailing competition and parties. Next, we had to put money in for the “Kitty Fund,” which is food and drinks for the boat for the week. We also had to pitch in money to tip our skipper and pay for gas for the boat. At the parties you usually get 1 or 2 free drinks with your wristband, but after, that you pay for your drinks. So it can get expensive, especially if you want to splurge on bottle service. It’s nice to have a heads up on all this so you can budget accordingly. Bottom line: if you plan to drink and eat out and don’t want to worry about running out of money, you should plan to spend around $130 USD/day. Here’s a quick budget breakdown…

2) The Yacht Week is more about partying and less about sailing

Yes, you will sail from island to island (my favorite part of the trip!), but the main focus of Yacht Week is the parties they throw. There is a big welcome party the night you arrive, and for the rest of the trip, there are day parties and night parties every single day. I didn’t fully understand this coming into the trip so I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, but once I realized the basic agenda was sailing from party to party, I was able to just go with the flow and also plan some other stuff I wanted to do, without feeling like I was going to miss out.

With that said, I highly recommend skipping one or two of the day parties and exploring instead. On the Greece Route , forget the day party at Love Bay Beach (it’s a dirt beach and not that pretty) and check out Poros! There is a lot to see and you only get one night there, so skip the day party and wander around this cute little town. Also, Hydra Island ( my favorite stop on the Greece Route ) is another must see! Definitely ditch the day party and spend your time exploring this magical place. There are so many gorgeous spots to take photos on both islands.

3) Unless you splurge on a bigger, nicer sailboat, you will not be able to use the toilet onboard for #2!

You can go pee on all the sailboats, but you can’t flush toilet paper down the toilets, and on many of them, you cannot go #2. I am sorry. I know this is a disgusting topic, but it is even more disgusting and horrifying to find yourself on a boat, sailing for hours or docked somewhere overnight, and realize there is nowhere that you can go to the bathroom. My friend Misha and I stayed at several hotels along the way because neither of us wanted to handle not having proper use of a toilet for days on end, but many girls were not as lucky, and there are some very embarrassing stories that I will not repeat here. Had we known about the bathroom situation prior, we would have splurged on a bigger sailboat that could accommodate people using the toilet. So make sure you look into this before you book your boat!

4) Your boat will get dirty real quick!

We had an all-girls crew and our cabin still got crazy dirty every day. Make a pact to all help clean. If everyone pitches in, it takes just a few minutes a day to keep your boat clean. Stay on top of dishes. Do them right after you are done eating, and try to keep all your personal stuff in your own cabin. The last thing you want is to spend a week in a tiny cramped, filthy space. This is the real Yacht Week v. your Instagram Yacht Week…

5) There is no air conditioning on the smaller sailboats

This is really not a big deal but when it’s very hot, it is hard to sleep in the cabins. I recommend bringing a yoga mat or buying one the first night you are there, so you can lay it out and sleep on the deck of the boat at night. And if you do choose to sleep on the deck, make sure someone sleeps next to you. A lot of people will be walking to and from the boats at all hours of the night, so it is safer to use the buddy system, especially for girls.

6) You will have the time of your life!

Just go!   If you can’t find a friend to go with you, just go on your own. Every single girl on our boat was amazing and our skipper,  Gregor , was one of the kindest and most responsible guys I have ever met! I had the time of my life and I can’t wait to go on another Yacht Week trip, especially now that I know what to expect. It is nothing like the real world and it will be an amazing experience!

Great article Vanessa! I have been on Yacht Week a couple of times now, its super fun, but its definitely good for newbies to Yacht Week to hear how to prepare to make sure they really enjoy it! Completely agree on splurging on a bigger better boat, we went for a much larger yacht for BVI than we had in Croatia and it made such a difference! Hello Vanessa. I’ve got a group of 4-6 guys who want to go to Croatia next June and definitely want a higher end boat. I assume we should be able to set this up as their must be others who are willing to spend more to get more. A couple of questions; are all boats single sex boats? Would it be wise to get a few hotels at some of the ports/stops? How about paying for a single cabin? Basically I’m trying to gather as much information as possible before booking starts in a couple of weeks. Thank you, Chip

Hi Chip! If you just want the boat to be your 6 friends I am sure you can find a high-end boat that will work for you (you’ll just need to pay more for a nicer boat) but generally Yacht Week wants there to be at least 50% girls on the boat. So there are all girl boats and mixed male/female boats but rarely all male boats. However I am sure it is possible to have an all male boat. I would contact Yacht Week directly to ask about this: [email protected] | As far as hotels, if you get a nice boat with proper bathrooms you won’t need to rent hotel rooms. I would recommend putting the money you would spend on hotels rooms towards getting a nicer boat with nice, proper bathrooms. Have a blast on your trip! X

Hi Juan! Thanks for your questions! 1) You don’t need a hostess but I am sure it would be nice to have one. You absolutely need a captain or a skipper to sail the boat. 2) Bottle service prices vary depending on where you go. We did the Greece route and I think our bottle service was about 150 EURO for 1 bottle but again this varies. 3) In my post you will see the price breakdown. It was approx $925 USD for the week for my trip. 4) Yes, I would book spots for you and your friend and the rest of the boat will be filled with a mix of males and females for a 50% female/male ratio.

Hi! When I think of yacht week, I want those typical parties where the boats link together in the ocean and create a mini village to mingle for the day. I’ve only heard of this on Croatia routes. Does this happen for Greece at all?

Hi Arly! This does happen on the Greece route, and I think all of the routes! The age range is typically a majority of people in their early to late twenties, with some people a little younger and some people in their early to mid thirties. Most people you will be in there twenties. I think I was twenty-nine when I went, which is on the older side! Have a blast!

Hi Lindsey – thanks for reaching out. I don’t remember specific cost for port fees or any electric fees but I know our Kitty Fund that everyone pitched money into at the start of the trip cover all the boat related costs on the trip, so yes, all your boat fees are included in the $130/day! X

Question: the catamarans seem a lot more stable (and thus probably a better place to gather people for the party) whereas the Beneteau Oceanis 60 is just a sexy beast. We want to make sure we can have people over at our boat to party (and that it is stable enough for it). Which one do you think is the way to go (from your observations)?

Hi Kay – I am not a boat expert but I think any sailboat would be fine to have people on to “party” as long as you don’t go over the max weight limit for the boat. The skipper will let you know how many extra people you can have. X

Hello Hello, may I ask what marina did you leave from and did you happen to see any yacht week prop stores near the marina are on your route? Someplace to buy floaties, temporary tattoos, UV body paint, and the like. We’re trying to maximize our carry on space by strategizing what we can buy in Athens.

I took this trip a few years ago so sorry I do not remember the name of the marina but I remember stores for everything we wanted to buy were within walking distance of our boat including a place to buy floaties, body paint and costumes etc! So unless there is something specific you want you can just go buy stuff with your boat crew when you arrive! 😉

Where do the floaties go after Yacht week? I leave in about 3 weeks and am purchasing floaties now. But every photo I see everyone is on a floatie. Would it make sense to just buy some off of them instead of lugging them half way accross the planet in a carry-on? Or is somewhere in Split just the location of the worlds largest floatie graveyard

Hi Jason! On the Greece route there was a store right in the harbor where we bought floaties the day before we set sail. I don’t know what people do with their floaties after yacht week. Mine got holes along the way and deflated so I threw them away but I would have given them to someone if they made it to the end! You can probably just wait and buy them when you get there. Maybe buy one floatie before and then get the rest when you arrive that way you know you at least have one!

Vanessa, Great article. I’m planning on doing this with a few friends. I noticed that you kept bringing up bottle service as being expensive. What if we ended up buying a lot of supplies (booze included) before getting on the boat. Would that be an issue? Maybe you pointed this out already and I stupidly missed it. Thanks.

Hi Allen! Thanks for your comment! I just mentioned that if you want to splurge on bottle service it is expensive and can add up quickly. You can also of course buy supplies and just drink on the boat and not spend money when you go out to the parties but you can’t bring alcohol with you the clubs obviously, so if you want to drink while there you will need to factor in the extra cost of drinks. TYW gives you a wrist band that usually gives you at least 2 free drinks at each party but you have to buy your own drinks after that so just be sure to factor in the cost if you plan to drink when going out!

Hi Jade! We had a crew of 8 girls. I think the amount you tip should depend more on how good your skipper is/ how much he does and how much your sailboat cost to rent. We had a small, cheaper boat but our skipper was really awesome so we wanted to tip him well. He went above and beyond to make sure we were all safe, happy and having fun! Hope this helps. Also, we were debating on if we book in pairs (cabins) and be on separate boats or if we book our own, what are your thoughts?

Hi Kelsy! Thanks for your comment! Most people are in their 20s on yacht week but there are lots of people in their 30s too so you girls won’t feel out of place. I would try to rent your own boat all together. It will be easier if you are all together otherwise you will spend most of the trip just trying to meet up. Yacht week is about relaxing and having fun so you don’t want to work about stuff like that on your trip. You will also have plenty of time to mix and mingle with other people at the parties and when you are docked together or anchored during the day together! Hope you ladies have a blast! Hi Kelly! I don’t think there is really a best month but you might find cheaper flights and the places you go to might be a little less crowded in August. June and July are peak high season so best to try to avoid touristy spots during those months if you can.

Do you remember how much of your budget you were able to pay for with credit card, or how much of it had to be paid for with cash? I want to avoid converting too much of my money into cash euros for the Greece trip.

Hi Kurt! I paid for my spot on our boat with my credit card online prior to the trip. Everything else I paid for in cash. It is much easier if you have cash on hand to pay for meals and drinks etc. If you get bottle service at a bar you will be able to pay with a card but a drink here or there and meals where you are in a group it is much easier to each just throw in some cash. I would suggest taking maybe $300 out before you start the trip then getting more at one of your stops along the way that way just to be safe. I did not have anything stolen from me on the trip but it is always a risk if you have too much cash with you. Have fun! X, Vanessa

Music is always a central part of the Yacht Week experience and 2024 is no different. For fans of Afrobeats and dancehall, Yacht Week caters with its own in-house brand, Rhythm & Waves (June 22 – 28). While those with true party stamina can take on the Croatia Ultra Festival route (July 6-12) letting Yacht Week guests attend one of the world’s best house and techno festivals as VIPs. • For six years I was skipper at The Yacht Week in Croatia

The Yacht Week is definitely  the most infamous and wildest floating party festival . Nowhere else can you find a fleet of  270 boats floating together packed with people enjoying themselves and dancing till dawn. The sailing itself doesn’t much get in the way but being a skipper in this fleet is really demanding.

So we interviewed a  skipper Daniel Šenekl , who sailed during The Yacht Week for 12 weeks every year. He was responsible for his entire crew, seven days a week, day and night on board as well as on the mainland. It was an incredible 6 years. As he himself says “When I total it up, I spent at least  a full year of my life at The Yacht Week . And I survived! Let’s see what the after-effects will be :)” 

What is The Yacht Week?

A floating festival, aka a massive party and  music festival on board yachts . Throughout the day it’s sailing, relaxing with friends and exploring the islands. In the evening the non-stop party gets started. It runs every year from June to September in several different locations - in Croatia, Italy, Greece and the British Virgin Islands. Floating parties are becoming ever more popular with other similar festivals springing up, such as the  Matt Sailors festival and the newer  BucketLust .

Dan, how did you get started as a skipper at The Yacht Week?

7 years back, in 2011, I was working on the island of Solta for my stepfather as a divemaster, teaching people to dive. Every Thursday a fleet of ships with flags appeared. Even though I didn’t know at the time it was The Yacht Week, it looked extremely interesting. A lot of boats, a lot of people and foreign flags. In the evening they would always have a party together at the bar. When I came to the bar I got talking to one of the managers. He told me that the next year they would definitely be looking for new people, so I just asked him for the post of skipper.

And you were already an experienced yachtsman by then?

At that time I had papers for yachting but only a basic Croatian course. A condition of The Yacht Week was to get a more advanced, professional level of qualification.

That winter I spent in the mountains in Canada and in the spring I moved to Croatia. That’s where I began doing the RYA license. I did the practical exam in Croatia and the theory in England. The Yacht Week always takes new skippers on a week-long academy - training that everyone must go through.  

How does The Yacht Week look as a yachtsman? Is it even yachting?

Sailors don’t really come there. It is mainly for young people out to have fun, experience something unusual and get to know Croatia. But I did once get a crew of yachting instructors, which I enjoyed.

And how did The Yacht Week get started?

The festival originated in 2004 on a single boat, essentially just for a few friends. It was nowhere near as huge as it is now, not for a long time. The biggest explosion began in 2012. Before it became such a massive festival, it had really just been for the enjoyment of students and the founders.

How many boats usually travel together in the fleet?

It depends on the season, at the beginning and end of the season there are about 25 boats. The Yacht Week begins in June and ends in September, with 14 tours in total. In the middle of the season, especially during the huge international Ultra music festival in Split, which host DJs from all around the globe, there can be 270 ships in the fleet. We then divide them into three routes (black, red and ultra), they are essentially the same route, red and black in opposite directions and ultra timed to fit in with the music festival. 

A lot of skippers are completely exhausted after two weeks

How difficult is it to organise and coordinate the skippers when dealing with such a huge number of boats.

It is all very well organised. We skippers have daily morning meetings, a safety meeting for an hour / hour and a half, especially for newcomers. The principle is always the same - we talk, for example, about when to set sail and we solve organisational issues. But mostly it is about safety.

The voyage route is always the same, fixed in advance and we are all in a Facebook group together where we can always pass on messages. We also, of course, have radios but they are mostly for more practical issues when anchoring and sailing. All other things go through Facebook and Messenger.

Everyone takes photos of the boats anchored in interesting formations..

Indeed and mostly it is a circle raft! People really love it and it’s always a huge success. All the boats anchor to each other in a circle with their sterns lined up with ropes. A large circle of water is formed in the middle. It is done twice a week for about 4 hours and it's free entertainment for all. Usually another small boat positions itself in the middle with speakers and a DJ, who plays .

Do all these units train together somehow?

Yes, everything is practised at the academy. We also go over it at the safety meeting, especially important for novice skippers. They must learn to maneuver even without a boat thruster. It works so that the boat is set up at an angle of 45 degrees, the anchor is thrown about 30 to 40 metres away from the circle and then the boats are levelled up. The anchors must form a circle.

Another popular formation is the tunnel raft. Half of the boats are connected in a row next to each other and the other half form a row opposite them, back to back. This creates a tunnel between them.

And so we anchor like that the whole night. That's the most difficult thing about The Yacht Week. Most injuries occur because there is no “supervision” or security. Of course, each individual should be responsible for themselves. However for a captain it is both physically and mentally demanding as they are fully responsible for the crew. A lot of skippers are completely exhausted after two or three weeks, you run out of strength fast.

What type of people come along and do they return again?

The age range is mostly from 18 up to a maximum of 35. It is mainly very rich young people as boats at The Yacht Week usually cost up to three times more to rent than a normal charter boat. They are mostly single and come along with a bunch of friends. Mostly they are Americans as well as Australians. It is very popular among the youth in the USA. They go travelling for 3 months or more and then hop on to The Yacht Week.  

People don’t usually return to The Yacht Week. For them its an huge experience but they don't need to return for more. 99 % of the reviews are positive. It is also true that they don’t necessarily remember much :) It is nonstop fun.

What goes on during the day on the boat, how do people have fun and what do they get up to?  

There’s about 4 hours of sailing a day, well, using the motor. The route is always the same. The boat sails from Split to the island of Hvar where we spend 2 days. Then in Vis where we spend another 2 days. One evening we are in a natural bay and then we return back.

For those who want to enjoy something other than partying, Hvar and Vis are the most interesting, people rent scooters, quads, cars and go across the island. Vis is probably the most popular.

Most people come there for dancing and for pop and deep house music. Do they wear any special clothes or masks?  

Sure, they get dressed up, like pikachu and those techno party masks. The Croatians don’t like it, of course, so they have only one night in one club where they can be have body paint and masks.

Otherwise they must wear some kind of shirt which I have to supervise. I keep having to tell them to try to look normal and not like a fool otherwise the restaurant won’t serve them. On Hvar you can get a fine of 500 EUR, if you fall asleep it's 1000 EUR and they still lock you up. But this happens every single time at The Yacht Week, someone always ends up in a cell. It's already been in the newspapers - how people are running around naked on Hvar keeping the cops busy.

Relationships are probably freer and more relaxed….

Of course, always. They are all like one big family. I have never experienced a fight. Everybody has fun, they are friendly, nice….it just works. That’s what I like about it, it’s easy to make friends quickly. Everyone is in the same boat, although everyone has a different one. No one suffers from cabin fever. Young people don’t. They just grab a bottle and everything’s fine. 

Sex, drugs and The Yacht Week?

Many people associate yacht week with sex, the internet is full of wild stories, are they true.

I once had an entire crew from Tinder. So that’s how it works. Otherwise The Yacht Week has established a gender ratio, which means that the crew has to be mixed, half and half - 6 boys and 6 girls. What happens is that the guys book the boat and then invite some girls in order to meet the conditions.

Do drugs also show up at The Yacht Week?

I have rarely come across them. Of course, the captain is responsible for the boat and if something were found on board, it would be a major problem and the responsibility of the skipper. At the outset we instruct all participants on what they can or can’t do, they sign a statement and have a safety briefing. Of course, at any time the police can stop the boat for a random drugs test.

And that happens?

The police crack down on drugs, but we don’t have much trouble at The Yacht Week. I think this is due to working well together and good communication. As long as nothing happens, there’s no problem. 

When a pizza met a unicorn

Do you organise some fun for the crew.

We always strive to set up a program they want. I’ll know on day one whether or not they want to know something more or are just happy to drink. If they are interested, I gladly go with them to other locations. I’ll take them for a special dinner, show them them the island.

Inflatable boats and floaties are also typical at The Yacht Week.

They all have at leasts 2 to 3 inflatable deck chairs, pizzas, unicorns, melons. I’ve probably seen everything you can imagine, including inflatable virgins. Then the madness ensues. They also bring them up on board, decorating the boat like a Christmas tree.

But I don’t like it much, it hinders the boat. At night some of the inflatables permanently “give up the ghost”. People are simply just able to think up a lot of stuff to do. They also bring on Christmas tree lights and decorate the whole ship.

Is fun combined with some kind of sport?

People are interested in diving, but we don’t recommend it, it is extremely dangerous when combined with alcohol and fatigue. Flyboard is popular, water jet boots. They can be borrowed every day, it’s part of our services. Yoga is also organized twice a week.  

Are there any internal games that Skippers have fun with at The Yacht Week?  

There is one good game we play on board. The skippers play it and occasionally the crew join in. It involves the light alcoholic drink Smirnoff Ice. The bottle are set up like traps for the skipper and when he finds one, he has to down it.

It gets hidden everywhere, and you never expect it. You pull the anchor and you’ll see it on the rope. Or you pull the sail and its attached there with a ring so you have to put the sail down again, kneel down and drink it. It has a relatively low alcohol content, so it doesn’t kill you. It’s a good game :)

I watch over them all week like kids

And what is the most demanding for you during the voyage, what do you, as skipper have to battle against.

The most demanding thing is to make sure that nothing happens to anyone, that everyone is well instructed and they know what to do. It’s tough because most of them are already completely drunk at the marina, sometimes they bring a shopping trolley with a bottle of spirits in hand.

Then it’s hard to talk to them and I have to watch over them all week as if they were kids. It is really crazy and it is the biggest part of the experience. They roam around on their own and can easily miss the boat. When I find out that I have someone like that as part of the crew, I’ll write their phone number on my hand in permanent marker. This works if they don’t if they don’t lose their mobile.

A lot of things are lost at The Yacht Week?

Yes, it happens routinely. Every week, someone from my boat drops their mobile in the water or leaves it in a bar. Everything gets lost. I told the girls not to carry their passports and they lost them on the first night.

Divers have a field day after The Yacht Week. There is really everything to be found under the boats - the latest smartphones, bottles of Champagne, money...

How many times can a person as skipper endure this event without harming their health?

The first year I was excited and I wanted to experience all 14 weeks, with one week off. I was happy for the first 2 weeks, I also enjoyed the crew but I quickly found out that it wasn’t working so easily, I was exhausted.

But you get used to it, if you behave sensibly, it is challenging but a month at a time is manageable. Then the week off is pleasant. Close the apartment door, see nobody, no party, no alcohol...

Do you head the boat alone or do you have someone to help out?

The bigger boats sometimes pay for a hostess and that is a big plus and a great help for me. She takes care of the food, cleaning and helps me with the anchor and ropes. Otherwise I am completely alone. Mostly we help each other out a lot

The other skipper guys, who have already anchored, they catch the ropes or instantly jump on the dinghy and help others. The Yacht Week experience “drills” everyone, anchoring several times a day and skills improve quickly. It’s how I learnt the most.

What do the captains at The Yacht Week have in common?

It is very multicultural. There are a lot of Americans and Australians. Good sailors are from England, Sweden and Norway. They have it in their blood, they often grew up on a ship, under harsh conditions.

And do you know all the skippers?

I do, I was Lead Skipper, there are still plenty of guys who have been there as long as I have. 

The Yacht Weeks’ waste isn’t a problem, injuries yes

Such a lot of boats together, with people having fun must produce a lot of waste. how does the yacht week deal with this.

In the past the situation was a lot worse, but the group is really dealing with the problem together. Don’t let anything fall into the sea and we won’t leave any rubbish behind. We talk about it a lot. The people on the boat are told this repeatedly and I try to keep them under control. We also collect rubbish from the sea when we spot it. Of course we go back for the rubbish that accidentally flies off our own boat.

I really try hard myself during The Yacht Week. Recently we have been limiting the plastic utensils and dishes, if we need them we use paper ones in case they accidentally fly into the sea. In Croatia, the people in the marina sort waste, so I hand it in there. Two years, after a joint meeting  in Palmižana, we had a great project where the skippers picked up rubbish together on the beach .  

How about hygiene and pollution?

All ships have a holding tank. Everybody is instructed how to use it. It's really carefully controlled so that it is always closed in the marinas and at the coast.

You talked about injuries, how often do they happen during The Yacht Week?

Every year there are serious injuries, several time a month. Usually a person slips on board whilst drunk, smashing their head, fracturing their skull. I once had to pull a girl out of the water who was drunk walking over the passer rail, slipped, struck her head on the pontoon and fell unconscious into the water. When I pulled her out, I dislocated her shoulder. But it all worked out well in the end!

The worst thing I’ve experienced was when one of the skippers had a heart attack who, unfortunately, did not make it. But we found out from a doctor that he had a heart defect, so it was inevitable. Since then, there is a memorial in one of the bays and  The Yacht Week organizes a regatta in his name each year called the Rosenberg Cup. The company is still in contact with his family. Since then, equipment has been improved, we have a defibrillator and a professional, a doctor or nurse, who is always to hand.

So the fleet always has an escort?

Yes, a speed boat in case an accident happens or a problem arises. 

People are surprised the water is salty...

How to deal with the situation when the weather gets worse people are not used to it, and some may be on a boat for the first time..

We have to jump to it. The sipper must always be there to advise. I’m on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the boat and the mainland. I’m responsible for the ship. I have to know the weather and a detailed forecast and together we sort out the situation.

When the weather is bad at night, we are ready to get the engines started and we are always ready to lift anchor and take off to safety outside the bay and rocks. But this happens rarely. I like harsher conditions and I enjoy the wind, some people don’t much like it and vomit at even the slightest wave.

You certainly have a lot of amusing experiences. Do people complain about things?

Enough people complain. They’ve never been on a boat. When they pay 17,000 euros they expect a luxurious yacht that they might have seen on a photo somewhere with a crew and equipped luxuriously.

Once I met some girls who were extremely upset so I wanted to sort it out. I asked what the problem was - the captain maybe, or someone on board. It turned out that before they set out, they had seen a YouTube video showing footage from the British Virgin Islands, Italy, Croatia and Greece. It turns out they had been expecting to see it all in just a week……

Or once the crew came to Split and we couldn’t for the life of us find their ship, we tried for a long time to find out what the mistake had been and looked to sort it out. Then we found out that they had actually booked a boat in Greece. They thought it was right next door.

Most people complain about the heat, or the cold, too much sun. Or windy or too salty. I could not explain it too them at all when they asked me why it was so salty. I didn’t know what to say….but a skipper gets used to it. Probably to everything imaginable. 

I’d like to experience The Yacht Week just as a customer

Do you ever get the yacht to yourself or just with the crew.

I made such a trip just this year, one week with my friends. But we followed the Yacht Week route as they wanted to see it.

Would you ever return to The Yacht Week?

I would definitely come back, it would be an amazing experience. However I’d like to experience it as a customer. I’ve never been on holiday like that with a bunch of friends. We would rent a boat, a skipper of course…..But I think I would be a good customer! Plus I wouldn’t complain. 

Yachting beginnings and experiences

How did you get into yachting, what brought you to it.

It’s thanks to my stepfather who is a yachting and diving instructor. At the age of seven, he took me out on a boat for the first time, it was a simple boat, Alwin. We spent 14 days on board, it was a great adventure. Fantastic..

The he began working in Croatia so I followed him there and spent time there, even on board. He had already began hosting the Skipper’s regatta, now in it’s 18th year and he is still organising 3-4 regattas a year. It was he who got me into all this and taught me about it. Now he has sailed to Lipari, Elbe and Corsica.

What are the best and worst things you have experienced on a yacht?

The worst I know precisely...but the best? Well, it’s probably also the best. After the first year at The Yacht Week, I got an offer to transport a boat from the north of France, from Les Sables to the Canary Islands. The three of us were skippers. After 3 days of the voyage, a we got caught up in a massive storm. A whirlwind. The wind struck us at 50 knots. We were really scared. It was a new ship and we didn’t know what to expect from it. Fortunately, the boat survived.

We sat together for the worst 20 hours, flares and lifeboat at the ready. We were ready to leave the boat if anything happened. The waves were like a barrage, massive, up to six metres.

Was it possible to still control the boat?

Yes, it was. With small sails, we had thrown anchor. And I prayed. That was about all that could be done. And we thought about what to do in case something happens. Fortunately nothing happened, the ship and the sails stood up to the onslaught.

And that was also the best experience. When we saw the mainland. It was fantastic. The sea became calmer and relief swept over us after the huge, three-day, exhausting struggle.

And every day, when I experience the sunset on a sailing boat, it is a great experience.

Did you know the storm was coming?

We knew that strong winds were on the way. But after two days the storm intensified. At that time, I was basically a complete novice.

Would you deal with it differently now?

In the same situation, I would like to have better equipment. Better life jackets, satellite phone. I went into it with joy after the season end, which was beautiful. It took 10 days. The most incredible thing had been that throughout dolphins had been jumping in front of the bow of the boat. All that time we hadn’t been alone. At Gibraltar, when it warmed a bit, we went off to celebrate the fact that we had survived. Now I can laugh about it.

Is there anything you fear at sea after all these years?

I have dreams that I’m on a boat, the anchor line breaks and I end up on the rocks or the boat sinks. But in reality I’m ready for everything and I know what to do. I’m trained for it.

Do you have any personal tweaks whilst on board?

A small pillow. I can’t fall asleep without it. It just has to be there.

Do you use any apps, as well?

I always take a map along. GPS may be poorly calibrated. But I use all the data that is available to me, off course, aviation forecast, windyty, various profiles. There is no problem with data or signal in Croatia, I can look at the internet anytime I need.

And where to now? Will you keep yachting?

Definitely yes. I got an offer from the owner of a charter company that goes to Vietnam in Nha Trang. I’ll represent him, right now we’re working on it together and I’m flying to Vietnam this week. I’ll be scouting out new sites, yachting possibilities and opportunities to develop yachting in Vietnam. So we shall see. I’m looking forward to exploring a new country, another culture, I almost know nothing about Asia.

At The Yacht Week I had nowhere to go. I had been Lead Skipper who leads novices, teaching them the ropes, explaining anchoring, sorting out problems and leading the group. This is a huge new opportunity for me and especially a challenge.

The overall cost of the Yacht week in Croatia depends on aspects of your destination, itinerary, the group size and the kind of yacht you would like to charter! You either have an option to book a full yacht (can accommodate a group size of 6-12 people) or a cabin (for two people) on one of the yachts.

The former has three categories to choose from; the rates are per person - Standard (starts at $ 550), Premium (starting $ 752) and Premium Plus ($ 777 onwards). The prices for renting a cabin would range from $ 650 to $ 995 per person, depending on the package inclusions.

The Gala Opening Ceremony of the 5th International exhibition Moscow Boat Show was held on March 20 in the lobby of the first pavilion Crocus Expo IEC. The trade fair has demonstrated once again to be the largest project in Russia exhibiting the best products in the yachting segment.

The Moscow Boat Show is the own Crocus Expo IEC project and is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participated in the show.

Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was traditionally the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko,Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta, and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasons the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique articles.

The visitors for the first time had an opportunity to purchase 19-meter boats, private submarines, Jetlev-Flyers from MS Watersports and also rare yachts and boats.

The questions-and-answers session was organized for the journalists after the ceremony. Mass media representatives could communicate directly with organizers of the exhibition and top officials of the Russian yachting.

Ukrainian drones strike a major military depot in a Russian town northwest of Moscow

KYIV – Ukrainian drones struck a large military depot in a town deep inside Russia overnight, causing a huge fire and forcing some residents to evacuate, a Ukrainian official and Russian news reports said Wednesday. At least 13 people were injured, Russia's Health Ministry added.

Meanwhile, a senior U.S. diplomat said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has a workable plan to end the war, now in its third year, although its details have not been publicly disclosed.

Ukraine claimed the strike destroyed military warehouses in Toropets, a town in Russia’s Tver region about 380 kilometers (240 miles) northwest of Moscow and about 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

The attack was carried out by Ukraine’s Security Service, along with Ukraine’s Intelligence and Special Operations Forces, a Kyiv security official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the operation.

According to the official, the depot housed Iskander and Tochka-U missiles, as well as glide bombs and artillery shells. He said the facility caught fire in the strike and was burning across an area 6 kilometers (4 miles) wide.

Among the destroyed ammunition were North Korean KN-23 short-range ballistic missiles, another official, in Ukraine’s Intelligence Office, told AP. He also was not authorized to comment publicly and didn’t provide evidence to support his claim.

Russia and North Korea signed a landmark pact in June that envisioned mutual military assistance between Moscow and Pyongyang.

More than 100 domestically produced exploding drones were deployed in the attack on the depot, the Ukrainian intelligence official added.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti quoted regional authorities as saying air defense systems were working to repel a “massive drone attack” on Toropets, which has a population of about 11,000. The agency also reported a fire and the evacuations, and the Health Ministry said 13 people were hospitalized in the region after the attack.

Tver regional Gov. Igor Rudenya later said all evacuees could return home.

Successful Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia have become more common as Kyiv developed its drone technology.

Zelenskyy also is seeking approval from Western nations for Ukraine to use the sophisticated weapons they are providing to hit targets inside Russia. Some Western leaders have balked at that, fearing they could be dragged into the conflict.

Part of Kyiv’s strategy is targeting of military equipment, ammunition and infrastructure deep inside Russia, as well as making civilians feel some of the consequences of the war that is being fought largely inside Ukraine.

The swift push by Ukrainian forces into Russia’s Kursk border region last month fits into that plan, which apparently seeks to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to back down.

Putin, however, has shown no signs of that and has been trying to grind down Ukraine's resolve through attritional warfare and also sap the West’s support for Kyiv by drawing out the conflict. That has come at a price, however, as the U.K. Defense Ministry estimates the war has probably killed or wounded more than 600,000 Russian troops.

On Tuesday, Putin ordered the country’s military to increase its number of troops by 180,000 to a total of 1.5 million by Dec. 1.

Zelenskyy announced his war plan in his nightly address on Monday, saying it’s 90% ready and will be presented to allies over the next week.

He said Ukraine's plan for victory includes not only battlefield goals but also diplomatic and economic wins. The plan has been kept under wraps but the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at a news conference Tuesday that Washington officials have seen it.

“We think it lays out a strategy and a plan that can work,” she said, adding that the United States will bring it up with other world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly in New York next week. She did not comment on what the plan contained.
