Five hedge fund managers at London’s Marble Bar Asset Management will share at least $400m after agreeing to sell their five-year-old firm to EFG International, the Swiss bank.

Investment bank Lehman Brothers, which bought a 20 per cent stake over the past two years, is understood to have almost doubled its money as part of the deal, under which it will receive about $117m.

The purchase of Marble Bar for $517m in cash, plus up to $800m and a further 20 per cent of the equity in performance-linked payments, demonstrates that hedge fund managers are still in demand, in spite of the credit squeeze. But the price – at below 10 times earnings, according to EFG – appears to be lower than some of the deals that took place at the height of the boom last year, analysts said.

EFG shares rose 3.7 per cent to SFr47.75 on Monday.

Under the deal, founders Hilton Nathanson, an Australian former Goldman Sachs analyst, and Gilad Hayeem, a Briton who headed Liffe’s business development in Asia, and other partners will reinvest the immediate cash proceeds in Marble Bar funds, with a lock-in of up to six years.

Further payments to partners will be 30 per cent invested in EFG shares.

Mr Hayeem is a prominent member of Labour Friends of Israel and helped bankroll Hilary Benn’s campaign for deputy leadership of the UK’s governing Labour party.

He and Mr Nathanson created Marble Bar, which now has $4.4bn under management, through a buy-out of funds from Kyte Securities, the broker where they both worked. Marble Bar’s flagship fund, Jandakot, came through the summer market turmoil unscathed. It was up 9.4 per cent for the year to the end of September.

EFG, which owns CM Advisors, a fund of hedge funds, said it expected Marble Bar net profits of $80m-$100m next year. It will buy all but 9.99 per cent of the firm, with the rest taken by Greek sister bank Eurobank EFG.

The Swiss bank has been growing fast since floating two years ago. However, the rise in assets under management this year of SFr7bn (£3bn) is slower than had been expected, Lonnie Howell, chief executive, conceded.

Mr Howell said EFG, which approached Marble Bar nine months ago, had been attracted by its investment performance, growth and staff.

A mega-wealthy hedge fund founder has been granted special permission to leave Australian hotel quarantine after just three days to attend his father's funeral. 

Hilton Nathanson is based in the United Kingdom where he is the chairman and founding partner of Marble Bar Asset Management and was estimated in 2015 to be worth more than $400million. 

The 51-year-old arrived in the country on a Qatar Airways flight from London via Doha on Friday - the same day the UK recorded another 31,442 Covid cases, news.com.au reports.

After going straight to Perth hotel quarantine, Mr Nathanson was granted a compassionate exemption to temporarily leave for one hour and attend his father Marshall's memorial service in Guildford on Tuesday before returning to quarantine.

It is not known if Mr Nathanson has received a Covid vaccine but with 60 per cent of the UK population fully vaccinated he is likely to have. 

Hotel quarantine in Western Australia is overseen by WA Health with restrictions enforcement and exemptions administered by WA Police. 

Mr Nathanson's exemption was understood to be under strict conditions including that he remain away from other attendees and wear a face mask. 

Only those who are Australian citizens, permanent residents or in an exempt category can enter the country from overseas. 

A mandatory 14 days of hotel quarantine is also required for anyone stepping off an international flight with the exception of the New Zealand safe travel zone.

Mr Nathanson was born in Perth and moved to the UK in the 1990s where he established his hedge fund named after the remote town in WA's Pilbara region. 

In 2015 he was named as on of the 25 wealthiest hedge fund managers in Britain.

While passenger caps are managed by the federal governments, hotel quarantine systems are the responsibility of each state. 

Hard stances on hotel quarantine and border closures despite compassionate reasons for exemption have been a longstanding source of criticism toward state premiers. 

In July the Queensland government refused to allow Anthony McCormick who rushed back from British Columbia to see his mother who had cancer despite a number of negative Covid tests he received. 

Mr McCormick was later granted an exemption to attend her funeral. 

While in June James Turbitt also could not visit his dying mother after he returned from Belgium and was denied entry into WA. He was in hotel quarantine in Melbourne when she passed away. 

On Tuesday the Herald Sun revealed a fully vaccinated woman from Sydney is not being allowed to enter Victoria to see her daughter who is undergoing chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer. 

Such hardline policies were exposed as double-standards when a number of Hollywood stars have been allowed to enter the country for film shoots and elite sports players in the NRL and AFL have frequently been rushed into interstate 'bubbles' to avoid lockdowns.

It would take the sale of approximately 5.75 million HP ink cartridges to fund the $92 million purchase of superyacht Secret , currently listed for sale with Burgess. The ink cartridges were one of Walmart’s top-selling products in 2021, and might well have contributed to a successful year of yachting for Secret ’s owner, Walmart heiress and philanthropist Nancy Walton Laurie.

As the largest yacht on display at last month’s MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona, and one of three yachts reportedly owned by Laurie, the 271-foot beauty built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2013 provides some insight into the family’s tastes and preferences.

The main salon’s bold color scheme by interior designer Jim Harris mixes pillar-box red sofas and carpets with ornate gold wall art. It’s a brave step change from the neutral beige and gray tones often selected by owners, typically with resale value in mind.

The designers also moved the formal dining room to the upper deck, leaving a large entertaining space to watch sports and socialize. A monochrome marble bar with a glass backdrop, views to the main deck aft and an onboard mixologist all help to set the tone. When it comes onboard socializing, Secret pulls no punches.

Guests arrive via the lower deck beach club or the main deck side entrance, where luggage can be ushered into the color-coded lower deck guest cabins. There are some unusual perks to being a guest aboard Secret . Heated bathroom floors feature across all guest suites, while guest mattresses are singles that zip together into doubles for greater flexibility.

The upper-deck, full-beam master suite, named Chanel to reflect the black-and-champagne silk color scheme, is highly personalized. Separate his and her en suites have their own amenities: Hers has a full-sized bath, and his has higher countertops to accommodate former basketball player and owner Bill Laurie’s 6’ 4” height. Both have steam showers. The private office is considerably smaller than the VIP office to accommodate the owner’s request for an oversized walk-in wardrobe.

The most surprising area on board is the “Valentina” main deck VIP guest suite, named after the Valentina-inspired white spiked headboard. The master has sea views and a private terrace, but the full-beam VIP, decorated and claimed by Laurie’s adult daughter when her family is on board, is arguably the superior option. It shares the same footprint as the master but enjoys a greater attention to detail. The ensuite, decorated in black-and-white stripes, has two day heads—one with bidet—and a central wet room fitted with a shower and full-sized bathtub.

The monochrome décor is echoed throughout the yacht, from the upper-deck sky lounge to the guest hallways. In the 12-person cinema, red Porsche leather armchairs are mirrored in the leather ceiling panels. The dedicated treatment room enjoys an onboard beautician and masseuse who specializes in hot Swedish massage.

A glass elevator connects the lower deck to the bridge deck, where an indoor glass-fronted gym and outdoor pool are located. For sundown soaks, the sun deck Jacuzzi ticks the box.

Last refitted in 2018, the yacht started out life at 256 feet, with an additional 16 feet added to accommodate the owner’s choice of an aft deck dining table. It’s the preferred space to enjoy buffet-style breakfasts, protected from view by high bulwarks. Further al fresco dining for 14 people is available on the lower deck beach club, where a “dining under the stars” themed evening sees guests enjoy meals at the water’s edge beneath a blanket of twinkling LEDs and real constellations above.

For families and guests with a competitive spirit, the beach club, equipped with changing rooms and rain showers, is the center of watersports action. A serious collection of toys, including kneeboards, flyboards, trampolines and towables are matched by an inflatable assault course erected by the crew for “Sports Olympics.” The addition of a female water-sports instructor has proven popular with charter guests.  When the weather’s bad, the karaoke system comes to the rescue.

It’s no secret that smaller yachts in the 190-foot size range are proving more popular on the global charter market at present, preferred for their ability to access smaller ports and anchor close to shore. But Secret pulls out all the stops for guests looking to enjoy time aboard a yacht maxed out with amenities and personality, provided in a covert setting. All in all, definitely worth the printer cartridges.

Historic yacht sets sail for California

A 53-foot yacht is leaving Lake Mead and a colorful past in its wake.

Formerly the flagship of the Las Vegas Hilton, the Rendezvous, better known as the Lady Hilton in its heyday, has been sold and is being readied for a four-day, 700-mile ride to a marina near Sacramento, Calif. Barron Hilton purchased the yacht in 1978 and had her ply Lake Mead with casino and convention clients.

She was the largest of the yachts on the lake at a time when most major hotel casinos used the party boats to impress the uppercrust of high rollers.

Lady Hilton outlasted 'em all, said Michael Gasta, who said he "had the pleasure of her company" during his 1982-1998 stint with the Hilton.

"When the late Arthur Goldberg took over the reins of Hilton Gaming and renamed the company Park Place Entertainment, one of his early orders was 'sell the yacht and find me a golf course,' " Gasta recalled.

Not long after that, Gasta and his partners won the bidding process in 1998 and changed the name to the Rendezvous.

After 32 years at the same slip, the Rendezvous is heading for a new home in Clear Lake, Calif. One of Gasta's favorite memories: "Hosting the 35th birthday party for Celine Dion and her family five days after she opened her Caesars show."

Jerry’s business experience includes over twenty-five years of leadership experience in a succession of angel, venture-backed and Fortune 100 companies.  As a CEO, Baker has raised over $105 million in growth capital and achieved INC. 500, Deloitte  Fast 500 and MidAtlantic Venture Summit Top 100 among his list of recognitions. He has participated on the Board of Directors of seven companies and as Chairman of a regional airport. He has also served as an advisor for Panasonic Corporation and multiple other large companies. ​

Jerry was also a commercial pilot for 35 years, and has a keen appreciation for complex systems management and performance. He has previously owned a 34’ sloop on the Chesapeake and several power boats in the mid-Atlantic and S. Florida’s east and west coasts. He is currently owner-operator of a well-equipped Hatteras Motor Yacht, which offers him a unique perspective on the many considerations that go into yacht ownership and enjoyment.

Prior to his private sector career, Jerry achieved the rank of Captain in the United States Marine Corps, serving as an artillery Guns Platoon Commander as well as Aerial Observer in the OV-10 Bronco aircraft.

He served 5 years active duty and 5 years reserves in the USMC.  In 2016 Jerry was awarded the Semper Fidelis Award, which recognizes individuals whose service to our Nation exemplifies the Marine Corps motto to remain “Always Faithful.” Jerry has integrated his years of serving his county, executive experience and personal Yacht ownership to bring a level of service to the Yachting industry that far surpasses his clients expectations.

Shane Brafford is one of our newest associates to join the H. Hilton team. Shane is one of our most accomplished team members with decades of achievements and accolades to support his top tier position. Shane is a true Waterman in every sense of the word, enjoying 23 years behind the helms of multiple high profile custom sportfishing boats throughout the East Coast and Caribbean. Many have observed and celebrated his and his team’s major tournament wins received little more than a handshake and his notable humble smile in response.  Shane brings his unique perceptive and expertise to the Yacht Brokerage industry which is why potential buyers and sellers ask for him by name.  We at H. The Hilton Santa Clara offers a coveted location that appeases a variety of travelers. Not only does the hotel sit across the street from the Santa Clara Convention Center, it's also just one block from Levi's Stadium (home of the San Francisco 49ers) and less than 2 miles north of California's Great America theme park. Guests say the address is the most favorable quality of the hotel, though accommodations were another high point. Rooms are equipped with 37-inch flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access, signature Hilton Serenity Beds and minifridges. There is also a small, terrace pool, as well as a fitness center. Those in town for work will appreciate the various business amenities on-site, including meeting rooms, a business center and express mail services. The only gripe among recent lodgers? Because the property shares a parking lot with Levi's Stadium, the area can get hectic when there are football games. On the plus side, if you're a Hilton Honors program member, you can earn or redeem points here.
