Google’s AI ‘Reimagine’ tool helped us add wrecks, disasters, and corpses to our photos

The new feature on the pixel 9 series is way too good at creating disturbing imagery — and the safeguards in place are far too weak..

Magic Editor’s new tool helped us add the bike and car with nothing more than a text prompt.

As it turns out, a rabbit wearing an AI-generated top hat was just the tip of the iceberg.

Google is the latest phone company this year to announce AI photo editing tools, following Samsung’s somewhat troubling, mostly delightful sketch-to-image feature and Apple’s much more seemingly tame Image Playground coming this fall. The Pixel 9’s answer is a new tool called “Reimagine,” and after using it for a week with a few of my colleagues, I’m more convinced than ever that none of us are ready for what’s coming.

Reimagine is a logical extension of last year’s Magic Editor tools, which let you select and erase parts of a scene or change the sky to look like a sunset. It was nothing shocking. But Reimagine doesn’t just take it a step further — it kicks the whole door down. You can select any nonhuman object or portion of a scene and type in a text prompt to generate something in that space. The results are often very convincing and even uncanny. The lighting, shadows, and perspective usually match the original photo. You can add fun stuff, sure, like wildflowers or rainbows or whatever. But that’s not the problem.

A couple of my colleagues helped me test the boundaries of Reimagine with their Pixel 9 and 9 Pro review units, and we got it to generate some very disturbing things. Some of this required some creative prompting to work around the obvious guardrails; if you choose your words carefully, you can get it to create a reasonably convincing body under a blood-stained sheet.

magic powerboats photos

In our week of testing, we added car wrecks, smoking bombs in public places, sheets that appear to cover bloody corpses, and drug paraphernalia to images. That seems bad. As a reminder, this isn’t some piece of specialized software we went out of our way to use — it’s all built into a phone that my dad could walk into Verizon and buy.

When we asked Google for comment on the issue, company spokesperson Alex Moriconi responded with the following statement:

Pixel Studio and Magic Editor are helpful tools meant to unlock your creativity with text to image generation and advanced photo editing on Pixel 9 devices. We design our Generative AI tools to respect the intent of user prompts and that means they may create content that may offend when instructed by the user to do so. That said, it’s not anything goes. We have clear  policies  and  Terms of Service  on what kinds of content we allow and don’t allow, and build guardrails to prevent abuse. At times, some prompts can challenge these tools’ guardrails and we remain committed to continually enhancing and refining the safeguards we have in place.

To be sure, our creative prompting to work around filters is a clear violation of these policies. It’s also a violation of Safeway’s policies to ring up your organic peaches as conventionally grown at the self-checkout, not that I know anyone who would do that. And someone with the worst intentions isn’t concerned with Google’s terms and conditions, either. What’s most troubling about all of this is the lack of robust tools to identify this kind of content on the web. Our ability to make problematic images is running way ahead of our ability to identify them.

When you edit an image with Reimagine, there’s no watermark or any other obvious way to tell that the image is AI-generated — there’s just a tag in the metadata. That’s all well and good, but standard metadata is easily stripped from an image simply by taking a screenshot. Moriconi tells us that Google uses a more robust tagging system called SynthID for images created by Pixel Studio since they’re 100 percent synthetic. But images edited with Magic Editor don’t get those tags.

To be sure, tampering with photos is nothing new. People have been adding weird and deceptive stuff to images since the beginning of photography . But the difference now is that it has never been this easy to add these things realistically to your photos. A year or two ago, adding a convincing car crash to an image would have taken time, expertise, an understanding of Photoshop layers, and access to expensive software. Those barriers are gone; all it now takes is a bit of text, a few moments, and a new Pixel phone.

It’s also never been easier to circulate misleading photos quickly. The tools to convincingly manipulate your photos exist right inside the same device you use to capture it and publish it for all the world to see. We uploaded one of our “Reimagined” images to an Instagram story as a test (and quickly took it down). Meta didn’t tag it automatically as AI-generated, and I’m sure nobody would have been the wiser if they’d seen it.

Who knows, maybe everyone will read and abide by Google’s AI policies and use Reimagine to put wildflowers and rainbows in their photos. That would be lovely! But just in case they don’t , it might be best to apply a little extra skepticism to photos you see online.

Google Uses Magic of AI to Let You Insert Yourself Into Other People’s Family Photos

This feature might need some work., method to madness.

Of the many features boasted by Google's new AI-infused Pixel 9 smartphones, the option to digitally photobomb other people's family pics Michael Scott-style might be the most hilarious.

As one of the  Daily Mail 's reporters noted in her review of the Pixel's new "Add Me" feature, the tool is intended to let people taking group photographs put themselves into the picture so they don't feel left out.

The methodology is pretty straightforward: one person takes a photo of another person or group of people and then has someone else take a photo of them standing off to the side of the original photo in the same spot. The two photos are then merged into one that is, ostensibly, supposed to look like the two photographers were actually standing together.

As demo videos show , the app overlays the original photo in the frame of the second one so that the photographer can direct where to stand to make it look natural — but as the Mail 's reviewer discovered, it can easily end up looking like a cheap Photoshop job.

To test out the feature, Mail reporter Shivali Best went to London's Kensington Palace to get some tourists in on the experiment, and quicky found a willing American couple to help.

Because the photos were taken outside, however, the otherwise subtle differences in the outdoor light that occurred in the minutes between the two photos made it hilariously obvious that the reporter and her subjects were not standing in the same place at the same time.

I tested Google's 'Add Me' tool which uses AI to help you gatecrash group photos - with hilarious results https://t.co/1jRY36sZWL pic.twitter.com/oCAi7DOsTf — Daily Mail Online (@MailOnline) August 21, 2024

While using "Add Me" as intended didn't really work for that reporter, others have found a sillier purpose for it: taking duplicate photos of oneself, to make it look like there are multiple copies of you standing next to one another.

In a review for the blog  TechRadar , writer Lance Ulanoff endeavored to see if the feature "could be employed for some less utilitarian activities, like copying myself."

As he found, the Gemini AI -enabled feature functions much better for taking uncanny doppelgänger photos than trying to take straightforward group shots — and a perusal through X-formerly-Twitter babble about "Add Me" shows that he's not alone.

Testing Tech Young 😅 Here's a look at @madebygoogle 's Add Me feature. He still thinks this is the iPhone. pic.twitter.com/I8bDv802wC — Sean Fenner Jr (@SeanFennerJr) August 23, 2024

With so much ado about Pixel's other powerful AI features, from altering photos in-app to what  Wired calls its "next-level chatbot," it's refreshing to see some actual results that temper the hype surrounding the new smartphone — though to Android stans and AI admirers , mixed reviews are probably beside the point.

Review: Shakespeare is adrenaline in Magic Theatre’s thrilling ‘Richard II’

Naomi iizuka’s translation, part of play on shakespeare, starts with a life-and-death fight and maintains high energy throughout its concise 100-minute runtime..

Nora El Samahy, left, Ogie Zulueta, Kina Kantor, Jeunée Simon and Mia Tagano in Magic Theatre’s “Richard II.”

You can be forgiven for being skeptical of the Play On Shakespeare project. Why translate Shakespeare into contemporary verse, you might wonder, when that linguistic funk and fury is exactly what so many love about him?

Sure, the 9-year-old commissioning initiative born from Oregon Shakespeare Festival preserves the original’s rhyme, meter and meaning, leaving as is text that’s comprehensible to modern ears. But the result of some past Bay Area Play On productions has felt like Shakespeare lite. Just when you’re girding your loins for some weird and rich turn of phrase, out flops some basic-b bathos.

Ogie Zulueta, left, Nora El Samahy, Kina Kantor, Jeunée Simon, Mia Tagano, Catherine Castellanos and Juan Amador in Magic Theatre’s “Richard II.”

How thrillingly different Naomi Iizuka’s “Richard II” is.

Magic Theatre’s production, which opened Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Young Performers Theatre in San Francisco, begins with a life-and-death fight scene and somehow never lets that adrenaline abate throughout its lean 100 minutes.

Catherine Castellanos, left, and Juan Amador in Magic Theatre’s “Richard II.”

At first it’s a battle between Thomas Mowbray (Ogie Zulueta) and Henry Bolingbroke (Juan Amador) over who’s the traitor, all officiated by the king of the title (Jeunée Simon). The way Zulueta, laying out the terms of the dispute, ping-pongs between raving at his enemy and foaming with reverence for his king makes clear that in this extraordinary world, no just-OK feeling will serve. It’s all or nothing, for everything.

4 stars

“Richard II”: Translated by Naomi Iizuka from William Shakespeare. Directed by Karina Gutiérrez. Through Sept. 8. One hour, 40 minutes. $30-$75. Young Performers Theatre, Fort Mason, 2 Marina Blvd., Building D, Third Floor, S.F. 415-441-8822. https://magictheatre.org

“Richard II” is a strikingly modern play in that it allows its monarch to feel the toll of those exhausting stakes while also pointing out that even under ideal conditions, he might not have been the world’s best king. He abruptly halts that opening fight that he’d just sanctioned for no other apparent reason than that the gore made him flinch, then banishes both parties, including his cousin, Bolingbroke. He makes war when his coffers are empty, surrounds himself with flatterers and plunders his allies for cash. He goes on and on about his own feelings in the exact moments when leadership is called for.

In all these ways, Shakespeare — a political theorist as well as a dramatist — limns the cracks in the English throne: How do you reconcile a legitimately installed sovereign with actions that keep undermining himself and his station? If a king unkings himself bad choice by bad choice, what becomes of the uncrowned head left behind? Did all the qualities that made him king just magically evaporate, or do shreds of kingliness linger?

Director Karina Gutiérrez brings a piercing intellect and well of feeling to the text; each moment’s beating heart throbs, and not an ounce of fat gums up the works. Her cast is ace.

The virtuoso Catherine Castellanos, in a variety of smaller roles, makes steeliness explosive and sadness seething. When Richard reckons with death for the first time, Simon makes it as if a door has opened on her face and new light shines in.

Nora el Samahy in Magic Theatre’s “Richard II.”

Nora El Samahy, also in multiple parts, always seems to come at the text from a wry, slant angle; she pries it wide and makes it simple by seeing something the rest of us can’t.

When you walk into the theater, Tanya Orellana’s stairstep-dominated set, in the blinding white of a sect’s altar, seems to make every line point up. It’s a design that paves the way to the afterlife, but also one that reinforces a rigid hierarchy.

On its surface, Joan Osato’s video projections seem to make the set break apart — a la a seismic fissure — or make lightning strikes move backward, all to underscore how characters are violating not just monarchy but nature itself. Later still, she makes a dying Richard seem to disintegrate into balls of gold light.

In the play’s last moments, when the jewel glints of Alejandro Acosta’s lighting redden to the squeal in Christopher Sauceda’s sound design, only one thing is possible: a sudden blackout setting the stage for a sequel in the Shakespeare Cinematic Universe.

Disney Social Media Trend Turns Fatal, Vacationers and Employees at Risk of Dying

in Disney Parks , Walt Disney World

A freeway leading to a Walt Disney World entrance with the iconic Mickey Mouse sign is shown. The inset image on the right shows two cars, a red and a white one, with both their doors open, appearing to be involved in an incident.

While a trip to Walt Disney World Resort is meant to be a magical one, things can quickly turn awry if you choose not to follow the rules.

The entrance sign to Walt Disney World features the iconic Mickey Mouse on the left and Minnie Mouse on the right, with the text "The Most Magical Place on Earth" underneath. The sign is framed by palm trees with a bright blue sky in the background.

While there is a ton of free transportation at Disney World, from busses to boats to the Disney Skyliner and the monorail system, not all guests will be able to utilize them, especially if they are not staying at a Disney resort. If you are staying off property, there is a good chance that you are likely driving to the theme park you are going to visit (or Disney Springs ), or you are taking a ride-share service like Uber or Lyft.

Disney World has multiple entrances onto property, each of them having fun Disney theming to welcome guests to the most magical place on earth.

One of the most popular entrances is, of course, the famous Walt Disney World archway, which appears in a few locations. Because this spot is so well known, many guests tend to drive a little slower to capture photos when they enter, which is strictly not allowed. Disney has even put up signage to warn guests to not slow down at the entrance, as it can and has been the cause for a ton of accidents.

Disney California adventure entrance

Now, it yet again was at the root of another accident, putting thousands of other guests entering the property in danger.

Disney fan Schmoofy shared a TikTok from (@jurassic_vic) which seems to have been removed on TikTok but lives on via X. In the video, we can see two vehicles who crashed due to what is assumed to have been one of the cars stopping for a photo.

“those large flashing signs that say NO STOPPING on both sides of the road mixed with people slowing down to get their tiktoks and then you have someone filming a TikTok too. The WDW archways are becoming a social media nightmare irl”

This was later confirmed in the replies to the post, where Liam, a guest who witnessed the accident said, “BRUH I THINK I SAW THEM TAKING PHOTOS”.

A cast member replied, “I drive under this sign every morning for work and every single time I lay on the horn if I see people slowing down or stopping. I am trying to get to work, Keep it moving!”

This, as we have noted, is not an isolate incident. One reply stated, “A few weeks ago On my way! In someone pulled over, got out of the car and climbed onto the metal side rail to take a picture”. There is no stop sign or speed change right as guests enter, which is why slowing down dramatically or stopping a car entirely, or worse, exiting the vehicle for a photo is incredibly danger and could put your life at risk.

There have been multiple deaths at Disney World due to vehicle collisions, crashes, and accidents. Just last month, a woman died after running off the road with her car and striking a sign. In 2023 , a cyclist was struck by a car with fatal injuries.

A majestic castle with pink walls and blue conical roofs stands prominently under a dramatic, cloudy sky, reminiscent of Disney World's iconic landmarks. The structure features several spires and intricate architectural details. Green trees surround the castle, and some street lamps are visible in the foreground.

In 2023, a car collided with one of the iconic purple signs at the Resort. The accident involved at least two vehicles, with one crashing directly into the purple road signs at the Orlando Resort. According to reports from Guests, a Jeep made a wide U-turn, forcing a minivan off the road and into the pole and sign. Witnesses observed the incident on their way to work, and this remains the only information available about the accident at this time.

Fortunately, no major injuries were reported.

In 2022, a tragic accident occurred involving a man and three others, including two children, who were injured in a crash involving a bus (not a Disney bus) and another vehicle on State Road 417 in Orange County near Walt Disney World.

These are a few examples of the many accidents that take place at Disney World each day, but personally, I have seen multiple car accidents and nearly got into one myself at the Disney World entrances due to guests disobeying the rules and stopping for a photo or to film a video.

As we can see in the video shared above, not only are the two cars affected, but thousands of other guests who are constantly driving into Disney have been forced to slow down and merge as the accident has taken up multiple lanes, which could have led to another accident. While it does not seem that this incident was fatal, any accident could be.

Most recently, there was a fiery crash near Disney World;  read more on that here.

Rest assured that if you are visiting Walt Disney World on your next vacation and you are driving into the theme park, there will be plenty of photo and video opportunities at the parks and resorts, and causing or getting into an accident will not be a possible side effect of them.

Have you ever noticed this as an issue when driving at Walt Disney World?

The Truth about Magic From The Owner

  • Add to quote

Local boat builder closes after 15 years By Jayne Hanson Wednesday, April 8, 2009 5:35 PM MST A local boat manufacturer of two well-known brands of powerboats closed its doors Wednesday after 15 years of manufacturing and selling the floating luxury items. Power Marine and Motor Sports Inc, manufacturing corporation of Magic Powerboats and Sleek Powerboats, bid farewell to its employees and consumers Monday for unknown reasons, according to the corporation’s owner. “We are not bankrupt, we are just closing our doors. …It is very hard,” said Ron Moyes, owner of Magic and Sleek brand boat manufacturing corporation. The longtime owner of the Lake Havasu City-based manufacturing plant and sales office would not comment as to reasons surrounding the company’s closure. “We started downsizing (staff) last September,” Moyes said. Approximately 20 employees were affected by the closing this week, he siad. “I think it is a big loss … it is symptomatic of what is happening in the marine industry right now,” said Jim Salscheider, executive director of Lake Havasu City Marine Association. Moyes is the immediate past president and one of the founders of the Lake Havasu City Marine Association. According to Salscheider, Lake Havasu City is currently home to four boat manufacturer companies that build boats from start to finish. Two other local companies build boat hulls and tops, which are then sold to other companies for finishing and branding, he said. Moyes provided Today’s News-Herald with the farewell letter that will post today on the company’s Web site www.magicpowerboats.com that includes the message “We never imagined that we would be writing this letter to our amazing customers and friends. With tremendous hesitation and heartache we are closing our doors. “The last 15 years have been filled with challenges, amazing memories, hard work and pride. “Thank your for your business. “We are so thankful that you were all a part of our journey!” You may contact the reporter at [email protected]

so is it true that the flooring co. got stuck with all those boats??? and what is happining with them???

Unfortunately I don't think Magic/Sleek will be the last. I hope all the employees land on there feet quickly.

Wow, to bad to see this happen awesome looking boats , feel for all those workers that no longer have a place to work. hope thing get better soon.

magic powerboats photos

Wow. This is just like Crane Cams closing it's doors. HUGE. Sleek has been making boats since, what - late '60s / early '70s? End of an era. Maybe someone will jump in and pick up the pieces.

magic powerboats photos

Very sad. What's even sadder is that most people look at the boating industry as "floating luxury items." A lot of people mad good livings for themselves, others, and communities such as Lake Havasu. Now if a hundred plus boats get auctioned off at some point, no-one with a deck boat will be able to sell their boat for a decent amount of money for a long time. Good for the buyers, bad for the rest of the boating community.

Someone will pick up all those hulls for a song and a dance, and Magic 2 will be born. The new hull and top deck they made (H Series) is really nice. I hope the molds are sold to someone that puts it in production.

Rick....what is the difference on the H series?

Looks like Magic Boats will be more affordable now! Sad, though.

when the economy picks up, can the former owner just one day decide to re-open the shop and put magic back in business, or would he have to change the name, go through legal issues, etc.?

magic powerboats photos

Yes, they can. Taylor jetboats from Cushing Oklahoma closed in the mid 1990's, Roger Taylor still owns all legal rights to the brand and all it's emblems, insignias, etc. Everything we Taylor owner's have done to use the logo on the Taylor Boat's Roost website, and on t-shirts, stickers, etc, has had to have his blessing. Fortunately we found him early on in the website and have built a good working relationship with him. Great guy, just don't try to shank him legally. He sued at least one hull splasher back in the day (Galaxy).

Sad to read.

It's a sad day. Love em or hate em, I think Magic was great for both the boating world, and Havasu. I know they were KEY for the Food Drive Poker Run, and I'm sure their contributions will be missed.

When they were going strong, they empoyed a lot of people. They were good for the local economy and their closing will be a big loss.

KONK said: The "H" series is an incredibly nice boat, the "H' stands for (Hydraulic) because of the bimini top. The "C" series (Classic) boat is the original bottom boat with a single step. There is also the "S" series bottom witch stands for (Sport), it has several bottom changes and two steps runs 3-4 mph faster, quicker planing, better rough water ride. How do I know all of this? Because I have worked for Ron for 5 Years, I am the one who redesigned the "S" bottom, both hydraulic bimini tops and the "H" series boat, and all of the other trick little gadgets Ron needed to have, all of which I am very proud to have been a part of. Ron was a great man to work for. He cared a great deal for all of his employees, customers and the boating community. This is very difficult to write knowing that is now all over. I will miss dearly the relationship that has grown over the years. (Looking for work) KONK devil Click to expand...

As an owner of a few Magic boats in the past, it's a sad day for me. From the very early days when Ken Brown owned it to now, they've built some great boats. I remember seeing Leroy Schneider out in the first Rock Hard 34' Sorcerer and said to myself I've gotta have one.

Who flooring for them? Was it US Bank? Sad news for sure.

ditto Miss Venomous

Sleek/Magic is a big part of boating history. For instance, the 34 Sorcerer was a Don Aronow hull. There is a lot of history in that company and I'm sad to see them go. Pesky Varmint

Maybe Ron can work out a deal with say, Nordic, to take over the assets and molds as a Magic division of another company. Sad to see. I worked with them on several claims, they are always very helpful.

Damn this sucks! I really liked the "H" too. Always was one of my favorite deck boats, always will be I suppose. Now I have to keep my eyes open for a shot at an "H" for sale in the midst of all this. Best of luck to Ron and his staff.
