Mulder Fifty: Mulder Yachts reveals flagship model

Dutch shipyard Mulder Yachts has revealed a new 49.95-metre addition to its fleet, hailing from its main production facility in Zoeterwoude. An evolution of its popular ThirtySix model, the new Mulder Fifty design follows a "four generations" design philosophy that prioritises the perspective of the owner.  

The model was revealed during Mulder Yachts' 85th anniversary, a celebration attended by approximately 90 Mulder owners. Speaking with BOAT International , CEO Nick Mulder explained that the concept builds on the shipyard's heritage while "showing [its] ambition and where [it] wants to go, which is fifty metres". The new model also fills a gap in the Dutch shipbuilding segment for 50-metre plus semi-custom boats. 

The yard will borrow "engineered elements" from the ThirtySix to control production costs and continue working with her preferred suppliers. In terms of design, Mulder has built on popular features of the ThirtySix while making the exterior – credited to Frank Laupman of Omega Architects – more accentuated and contemporary. The 499 GT yacht is defined by tapered aft overhangs – featuring knuckles for an elegant and interesting touch – a rounded, near-vertical bow and windows and trapezium-shaped side boards to carry the roof.

"When trying to develop a new, bigger version of the Mulder ThirtySix, it wasn't the case of just adding a few metres. We're looking at it from an owner's perspective because we are owners," Mulder explained. "The 36-metre has everything you need, so I was thinking – what would be the real difference if you go bigger? I think you really need to have an elevator, particularly for the elderly and great-grandparents. You look at it differently when you're a father. That's how I came up with the four-generation idea."

Mulder Fifty's "four generations" philosophy manifests as a versatile, family-friendly interior arrangement. The standout feature is the atrium, featuring an elevator which, located in the heart of the vessel, allows guests to easily move between decks. There is the option of six or seven cabins, with the possibility of having a sky lounge or a seventh cabin on the aft wheelhouse deck. There will be further accommodation for a crew of 11.

The open-plan foredeck can be tailored to specific owner's requirements. A spacious saloon will feature the signature central bar arrangement and the full-beam skylounge, which would optically connect with the triangular mast and benefit from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Up top, there would be an enclosed 75-square-metre sundeck (covered by a sunroof) and an interpretation of the classic Mulder "windswept" mast. It would also be arranged with a Jacuzzi, sunpads and a cocktail bar with ample seating, including forward-facing observation seating.

With direct access from the main aft deck, there will be a beach club with a three-metre-long swim platform for sunbathing near water level and a gymnasium.

According to BOATPro , Mulder Yachts has two units in its ThirtySix series currently under construction.

Mulder Shipyard breidt uit met vierde faciliteit

Mulder Shipyard breidt verder uit met een vierde bouwfaciliteit. Het familiebedrijf met Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk als thuishaven heeft in Enkhuizen de oude bedrijfsruimtes van Dutch Yacht Builders gekocht.

“Het zijn twee loodsen: een grote van 54m en één van 40m met daartussen kantoren”, licht commercieel directeur Nick Mulder de aankoop toe. “Dan hebben we ook Voorland 10 gekocht. Daar werd alle ‘prefab’ gedaan, dus de interieurbouw. Naast de faciliteiten hebben we tevens de bestaande machines en inventaris overgenomen. Het geheel is samen ongeveer 4.500 m2 groot.”

Cascobouw in eigen beheer Op de vraag of een uitbreiding van hun huidige lijn ten grondslag licht aan deze aankoop, antwoordt Mulder: “We zijn nu een aantal jaren actief in de superjachtsector. We hebben best veel van onze 36m en 34m jachten gebouwd. Er zitten ook wel grotere jachten in de pen, maar primair is het idee van deze uitbreiding om meer controle te hebben over onze eigen agenda. We hebben tot nu toe de cascobouw altijd uitbesteed. We verwerken op jaarbasis zo’n 150 ton aluminium. Zeker de helft daarvan kunnen we nu in eigen beheer gaan bouwen. Daardoor kunnen we beter plannen en zeker stellen dat we de casco’s binnenkrijgen.”

De scheepswerf in Enkhuizen zal worden geleid door Jacco Klein, die voorheen als technisch directeur van de faciliteit werkzaam was. “Ik heb eerder de rompen van de 29-meter Firefly en de 30-meter Mahalo voor Mulder gebouwd en ken Dick en Nick Mulder al meer dan 20 jaar. Ik ben erg enthousiast over de toekomst”, aldus Klein. Zijn eerste uitdaging wordt het aantrekken van extra personeel. Mulder: “Gekwalificeerde aluminium cascobouwers mogen zich aanmelden bij Jacco Klein.” Bang dat dit een lastige klus zal worden, is Mulder niet: “Enkhuizen en omstreken is een mooi stukje ‘jachtbouw Nederland’, waar veel personeel beschikbaarheid is. Als we eind van dit jaar rond de twintig nieuwe medewerkers hebben, zijn we hartstikke blij. Jacco is momenteel druk met de sollicitaties.”

Enige haast is wel geboden, gezien de planning. Mulder: “We zijn al operationeel. In maart komt het eerste snijpakket van een nieuwe 36-meter. Dan gaan we starten met de cascobouw.” Vanuit Enkhuizen zijn de casco’s voor afbouw snel te transporteren naar de Mulder-werven in Zoeterwoude en Voorschoten.

Mulder Shipyard uit Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk begon 2022 met een belangrijke aankondiging: de aankoop van hun vierde faciliteit in Enkhuizen, gelegen in het noordwesten van Nederland. Met deze investering versterkt de Nederlandse familie jachtbouwer haar reputatie als een groeiende werf met een solide aanwezigheid in de wereldwijde superjachtwereld.

De nieuwe werf omvat twee cascobouwloodsen geschikt voor jachten tot 50 meter. Bovendien komt er een aparte loods voor interieurbouw en teakdekken.

We have provided this yacht, a Mulder 36, with high-gloss polished stainless steel letters. We performed the work at Mulder Shipyards in Zoeterwoude.

The design of Calypso is by Claydon Reeves with naval architecture by Van Oossanen. Thanks to the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) we cruise silently and thanks to the twin 847 kW engines we are assured of a maximum speed of 16.8 knots. I say ‘we’ because the photographer will also be joining us on this latest example of sailing comfort. Thanks to the slender hull and long waterline, the Calypso’s seaworthy capabilities in rough seas are excellent – making it an extremely comfortable cruise. And that is not unimportant, because I suffer from seasickness quite quickly (I haven’t had a moment here).

I am assigned the master bedroom and when I walk in I imagine myself in a bridal suite. It is the most luxurious of the four cabins, suitable for two people, with an adjoining shower and toilet. There is also a desk in the hut where you could work for a while (I won’t). There’s a walk-in closet, a TV that pops out of the wall (the James Bond effects on board aren’t off the air anyway) and, as icing on the cake, an electrically opening skylight. Lying on my bed I press the remote control and the sky slowly unfolds before my eyes. Brilliant.

We were very happy with this assignment and full of ecstasy to be able to do our quality lettering on his fantastic yacht.

The yacht consists of three floors, starting with the swimming platform, which can be folded out, creating a special beach club. It’s great to jump into the sea from here, swim and watch the yacht bob. One floor higher is the aft deck: wonderful to sit and enjoy with a book and a glass. Above that is the flybridge with the sunbeds and jacuzzi. You control the lighting system per room with an iPad, with three ‘moods’ : full, evening and soft. And yes, that also applies to the light at the jacuzzi. Of course, the view from all three floors is equally beautiful, during the day, later at the setting sun, and also at night it is wonderful.

It’s light, it’s big, it’s spotless, it smells wonderful, and there’s a nice music playing in the background, and oh, how beautiful it all is. Calypso has four spacious cabins that can accommodate ten guests. The yacht exudes luxury, without being showy. It is simply a beautifully finished ship, clearly Built By Mulder, with an eye for detail. Because everything is really finished to perfection. I notice that every door handle is covered with leather and stitched with a nice string.

Father and son Mulder are very proud of it, they confided to me earlier. You can feel that in everything and that is what Mulder Shipyard’s yachts are known for: the luxury, the quality, the top finish. The interior was designed by Vickers Studio from London, who themselves believe that everything is at its best when the lighting is on at night. And what I find very special is that the lines of Mulder’s family boat can be admired on the wall above the wooden table in the dining room – what a powerful effect that has.
