Solar Impact, a technological catamaran that runs on solar energy

Solar Impact Yacht

The Solar Impact is a 79-foot superyacht designed by the Swiss company of the same name and powered by solar energy. Its design is luxurious and modern, just like the technology it houses. Comfortable, quiet, the Solar Impact wants to revolutionize the long cruise market thanks to its almost unlimited autonomy, its design and its advanced technology.

Chloé Torterat

The Solar Impact is a 23.95 m (78' 6") catamaran project that runs on solar energy "This new yacht is changing the game, not only in terms of solar propulsion and design." explains the site.

Solar panels for electric propulsion

The Solar Impact is covered with 300 m2 of solar panels which provide the necessary energy for the 800 kW batteries and the 1000 kW motor (approximately 1341 HP) which gives it a maximum speed of 22 knots "This speed is due to the technical components used, which are optimally controlled by artificial intelligence ." However, a speed of 5 knots should be chosen for maximum range. Solar panels generate up to 320 kWh on a sunny day. A pair of 65 kW diesel engines is available as a backup solution.

All on-board systems can use the sun as a primary energy source. And its electrical operation should be completely silent.

A specially developed shell to reduce movement

The yard has worked hard to provide great comfort on board, even in rough seas. For example, the Solar Impact has a SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) hull that reduces boat rolling and pitching by up to 90%.

"This hull shape has been designed to minimize vertical movements in rough seas. It is similar to that of semi-submersible platforms (oil platforms). The movement of the waves , which is strongest at the surface of the water, decreases with depth" details the site.

Compared to a standard catamaran, the float line is much smaller since the two torpedo-shaped floats offer much less submerged surface. They stabilize the boat during movement. This system also reduces energy consumption.

A technological yacht

The construction site announces electronic systems controlled via artificial intelligence, as well as equipment and layout that allow control by a single person.

"We favor advanced shipbuilding in fluid mechanics , highly efficient energy technologies and durability." details the site.

A comfortable and luxurious interior

The interiors of the solar yacht have been designed for long stays on board with luxurious living spaces and spacious cabins. In total, the living area of 220 m2 is spread over 3 levels, including a large flybridge of 100 m2 with a splendid panoramic view.

A wide range of design options in terms of interior design, lighting, air conditioning and sound solutions allows you to customize your boat.

Solarimpact - Solar-Powered Yacht with Swath Technology

The solarimpact is a 24m electric yacht with a solar surface. the yacht features the swath technology..

There are some solar yacht concepts, but this comes with a stylish design by Roland Friedberger. The development of the SWATH yacht is headed by the German boatbuilder Schaaf Yachtbau. The electric technology comes from Kreisel – known for special electric vehicles like an electric Hummer H1 for the one and only Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger. Moreover, they delivered the technology for the proven SAY 29 Carbon with e-propulsion .

The Solarimpact features 280 square meters of solar cells by Sunpower that store the produced energy in 800 kWh batteries. In ideal conditions, the solar cells producing 300 kWh per day. The vessel’s range is 170 nautical miles in eco mode at 5 knots . The twin engines have a power of 500 kW each to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots . There are two 65 kW generators as backup and/or hybrid mode with a range of 2,500 nautical miles .

The aluminum yacht is still in the development stage, and a sale price is currently not known.

Looking to the future, the shipbuilding industry is driving the energy turnaround. A new generation of environmentally friendly watercraft will soon conquer the oceans.

SolarImpact is not only convincing in terms of its innovative energy supply, its powerful electric propulsion and its attractive design, but also in terms of maximum sailing comfort. Even in meter-high waves she glides almost silently and without swaying. The hull technology is based on the SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) design principle, which reduces the rolling and heeling of the boat by up to 90 percent through physical wave decoupling. This means that the hull lies calmly in the water even in heavy swell.

All systems on board can use the sun as a primary energy source. The drive is not only environmentally friendly, but also extremely quiet. The solar-powered ship is energy self-sufficient and, with a top speed of up to 20 knots, it is amazingly sporty to sail. This is due on the one hand to the various drive components with high overall efficiency. On the other hand, the artificial intelligence (AI) used in energy management, which ensures optimum control. Thanks to the high level of automation of all important systems, a single person can manoeuvre the yacht.

SolarImpact, a luxury yacht with sustainability in mind

SolarImpact Yacht AG is an innovative company with a clear plan for the future. The team of experienced engineers, designers, entrepreneurs and lateral thinkers has an eye for beautiful forms and a sense for modern technology. Furthermore, the team specialises in the development and design of SWATH luxury yachts powered exclusively by solar energy.

“Technology is not the main focus: our customers expect a product that sets new standards in terms of user-friendliness, comfort and individual freedom. In this way, our yacht meets the increasing desire of people to permanently shift their centre of life to the water. Our concept takes an important step towards maritime e-mobility by avoiding noise and C02 emissions. We also see this as a special incentive for investors. Not only do they invest in a promising technology, they also pay into a fund that helps to preserve and rebuild the environment.”

During his many years of experience at sea, founder and visionary Werner Vögeli became increasingly interested in environmental protection. Thus the idea for a maritime alternative to fossil combustion engines was born. His own research showed that there were hardly any environmentally friendly and seaworthy yachts on the market – especially in the premium segment. This was followed by countless theoretical calculations, model tests in research institutes and self-propelled models at sea. After 5 years of research work, the project has now been realized.

solarimpact-2

After five years of research by the Swiss company SolarImpact Yacht AG, the vision of a seaworthy solar yacht with futuristic modern aesthetics has now been realized.

This innovative high-tech design concept was developed to combine luxurious convenience, modern design and sustainability, and make it capable of sailing the high seas.

The concept will be unveiled at Cannes Yachting Festival 2018, where visitors can explore a virtual 3D model of the solar yacht.

Two aspects that have prevented a pleasant stay on board in the past have also been addressed: rough seas and high noise levels. The innovative solar yacht glides almost silently and without swaying – even over waves several metres high. The hull technology is based on the SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) construction principle, which has been known since 1938 but was previously reserved for special ships only: two torpedo-shaped buoyancy hulls under the water surface support the ship. This achieves a physical shaft decoupling that reduces the rolling and heeling of the yacht by up to 90 percent. It lies calmly in the water even in strong swells, putting an end to the annoying swaying motion of the boat.

But SolarImpact has recognised that the principle offers yet another invaluable advantage: it significantly reduces energy consumption. All systems on board can use the sun as their primary energy source. The yacht‘s solar drive is not only environmentally friendly but also extremely quiet.

The 23.7m vessel offers 340 sqm of living space on three levels.

The drive technology and energy supply were developed in cooperation with Austria's Kriesel Electric GmbH & Co. KG. For solar cells, SolarImpact cooperates with American supplier SunPower.

Two electric motors of 500 kW can push the vessel to a top speed of 22 knots, and a diesel aggregate ensures power in case of unfavourable weather conditions such as longer periods of cloud cover.

All key systems are highly automated so that a single person can even manoeuvre the yacht.

world's first ocean-going solar yacht can cruise the globe with no need for a fuel stop

swiss company solar impact has come up with a solar-powered   yacht with the ability to cruise the entire globe without needing to stop and refuel.  the 78-foot electric boat features a giant solar array, which covers the boats top, generating up to 320 kWh on a sunny day.

images courtesy of solar impact

the 70-ton aluminum-hulled solar impact is covered in 300 square meters of solar panels and is powered by an 800kWh battery which gives it 10 hours of cruising capability. if travelling with over speed, this could serve as the vessel’s sole source of power. the yacht boasts 1,000 kW (1,341 hp) of all-electric power and has an maximum speed of 22 knots, although a much slower speed of 5 knots would be necessary to take you around the world – if there wasn’t any land in the way.

if sailing on a cloudier day, there is a pair of 65-kW (87-hp) range-extending diesel engines on board as a backup.  supposedly the whole thing can be manoeuvred by a single person, with the yachts systems optimally controlled by some sort of artificial intelligence (AI). it also boasts stabilizing technology, supported by two torpedo-shaped buoyancy bodies beneath the water surface. this achieves a physical wave decoupling which reduces the rolling and heeling of the yacht by up to 90 percent, making it comfortable even when the waves are high. the concept was unveiled at last week’s cannes yachting festival, where  a full 3D model  allowed potential buyers the chance to explore the vessel using virtual reality.

Anything to save the planet, from the reduction of carbon to technology that can help us get wherever we need without having to chug on petrol. Well, since the emerging of Tesla, all battery-powered transportation vehicle is getting enough spotlight to steal our attention.

Now, a solar-powered cruise ship that does not need to stop to refuel has been successfully developed. SolarImpact, the ship that came out from 5 years of research by Zurich’s SolarImpact Yacht AG, did not disclose the estimated price and release date yet, but it is astonishing.

The company claims to use solar panels to power the ship, cutting the noise produced by traditional engines. The 800 kWh battery provides roaming capabilities of around 10 hours, which can be extended by adding batteries from the sun during the trip. In the case of sailing on cloudy days, the yacht is loaded with a pair of 65 kW diesel engines (87 hp) as a backup engine.

The 24-meter cruise ship has more than 300 square meters of solar panels on its roof, which can function as a single vessel. The ship also features two torpedo-shaped buoys under the surface of the water that SolarImpact Yacht AG claims will reduce the rolling and heeling from cruise ships to 90 percent in choppy conditions.

On the inside, SolarImpact has enough beds for ten people, including accommodations for the crew. Loaded with artificial intelligence, this futuristic shape yacht can even be controlled by just one person.

The Solar Impact Yacht Can Sail the World in Zero-emission Luxury

Boats (in general) and cruise ships (in particular) are among the least environmentally-friendly modes of travel that currently exist. While clever innovations have been made in the way of electric boats  and renewable-energy-assisted ships , we have a long way to go before the industry can be considered “green.” But, a newly unveiled solar-powered ship has the potential to chart a much brighter course for the future.

Swiss marine innovators Solar Impact debuted the aptly named Solar Impact Yacht at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. Under ideal, sunny conditions, the 78-foot all-electric boat has the potential to traverse the globe without stopping. This is accomplished through a 3,200-square-foot solar array that blankets the hull, generating up to 320kWh on a sunny day. These power an 800kWh battery with the capacity to run the ship for up to 10 hours in a single day. While this would mean dialing the cruising speed down to a leisurely 5 knots (that’s 5.7 miles per hour for you non-sailors), the ship is capable of a maximum speed of 22 knots.

The 70-ton hull uses lightweight, state-of-the-art aluminum construction to reduce weight. The exterior design also helps limit heeling and rolling in the water by up to 90%. Even in strong waves and currents, the ship’s stability ensures a relatively smooth, comfortable ride.

But, the Solar Impact isn’t meant to be merely a statement piece on the owner’s environmental awareness. Because it can run for extended periods — possibly indefinitely — the designers put a good deal of thought into the ship’s creature comforts. While the final details have yet to be confirmed, the latest virtual reality tour reveals a sleek, ultra-luxe, minimalist  cabin design that feels plucked from Blade Runner 2049 . The central onboard computer system is also powered by sophisticated AI software to control everything from lighting to electrical to propulsion.

The idea of a solar-powered yacht is nothing new. In 2016, the Solar Wave debuted to surprising demand. Plus, hybrid yacht designs are now greener and more affordable than ever, which is further proof of the viability of commercial solar-powered yacht models.

There is no pricing or official release date for the Solar Impact Yacht as it’s still in the early concept phase. But, frankly, if you have to ask …

This massive solar-powered yacht will let oligarchs cruise the seas without stopping for gas

Electric vehicles certainly seem to be the future, with just about every major auto brand following Tesla’s lead to a gas-free future, but will the same be true for boats? Yachts are a big status symbol for wealthy folks, but they’re also huge gas-guzzlers. Now, a Swedish company called Solar Impact is hoping to change that with a gorgeous pleasure boat that never sips a drop of fuel.

The ship is a technological marvel — which, it should be noted, has yet to actually be built — and is absolutely covered in power-generating solar panels. The ability to generate its own power gives the yacht unlimited range, but that claim comes with a bit of an asterisk.

This mighty vessel is rated at over 1,300 horsepower, and when at full throttle it can cruise at an impressive 22 knots. However, that speed would drain the large 800kWh battery faster than the solar panels can actually recharge it. For truly unlimited range you’d need to scale back your speed to a much slower 5 knots. When in electric mode, the yacht is “noiseless,” according to its manufacturer.

If you find yourself stuck with cloud-covered skies and an empty battery you can either wait for the Sun to shine through again or start up the dual diesel backup engines to push you along. Along with these power options, the company claims that the yacht comes with some kind of artificial intelligence, though it hasn’t exactly explained how it works.

“Our all-new, all-electric cranes meet our dual-focused maritime mission – delivering cleaner air for our communities and delivering goods our families and businesses rely on such as geo-thermal, solar and wind farm parts that will help strengthen the power grid for the southwestern U.S.,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “We’re improving air quality, driving commerce, and supporting good jobs. Everybody wins.”

“ These new cranes will advance the state’s clean energy goals while amplifying the Port’s tremendous economic impact on the San Diego County region,” stated State Controller Malia M. Cohen and Chair of the State Lands Commission. “I believe that with continued investments in innovative clean energy infrastructure, workforce development and job training, paired with ongoing meaningful community engagement and inclusion, and collaborative leadership, we can build a better tomorrow with thriving communities, a sustainable economy, and a vibrant port industry.”

“California’s ports play a significant role in the state’s goods movement, and now they are playing a significant role in improving the state’s air quality for the benefit of public health, especially in portside communities that have for years breathed unhealthful air,” said CARB Chair Liane Randolph. “CARB is proud to support the Port of San Diego in its efforts to reduce emissions across all of its operations, including the introduction of the first electric harbor cranes in North America.”

“San Diego is making history with the first all-electric mobile cranes in the country! Not only will they contribute to our overall economy because they can carry more weight than diesel-powered cranes, but they will also improve the environmental health for our communities,” stated Assemblymember Tasha Boerner. “California is making strides toward a green energy future, and the Port of San Diego is playing its part in leading the charge.”

“The Port of San Diego’s deployment of the first all-electric mobile cranes in North America continues to prove economic prosperity and environmental stewardship work in tandem along the waterfront,” said Chair of Environment Committee and Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava, City of San Diegos. “Electrification is the future—we are modernizing equipment, reducing harmful pollutants, and improving air quality for our portside communities. The Port is leading in the replacement of diesel-powered equipment and being at the forefront of deploying clean infrastructure.”

The Port of San Diego's new all-electric mobile harbor cranes perform a tandem lift during a demonstration event on September 17, 2024.

The all-electric cranes built by Konecranes are replacing the Port’s old diesel-powered crane. The conversion from a diesel-powered crane to an all-electric crane system is a big step toward achieving one goal of the Port’s Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS) of transitioning all cargo handling equipment to zero emissions by 2030.

In addition to the public health and environmental benefits, the new crane system allows the Port to compete for more business. The cranes represent the heaviest lift capability of any port crane system currently in place on the U.S. West Coast – up to 400 metric tons (MT). Most of the heavy-lift cargoes destined for this region weigh more than 200 MT, including larger pieces of solar, wind, and industrial energy equipment as well as project cargoes. With their heavier capacity and faster offloading speed, the new cranes also better serve our existing operations when crane movements are needed. Some of the target cargo for the two cranes will be electric grid strengthening projects including geo-thermal, solar and wind farms specifically in Arizona, Nevada, Southern California and Utah.

In support of the MCAS, the Port and various partners, have invested or committed nearly $125 million in clean air technologies and infrastructure projects, including the new electric cranes. The Port is also:

  • Home to the first all-electric tugboat in the United States, operated by Crowley Shipping.
  • Adding more shore power at its cargo and cruise terminals.
  • Operating a new solar-powered microgrid at TAMT.
  • Deploying a maritime emissions capture and control system, also known as a bonnet, for vessels that aren’t yet shore power capable. It’s expected to begin operating in 2025.
  • Continuing its partnership with SANDAG to complete design and construction funding for Harbor Drive 2.0, which includes intelligent transportation systems to separate trucks from regular traffic, encourages port-related trucks to stay off neighborhood streets in Barrio Logan, and reduces diesel and greenhouse gas emissions. Added benefits include improved pedestrian, bicycle, and transit connections, and urban greening.
  • Electrifying the Port’s fleet, including electric work trucks, vans, and service vehicles.
  • Terminalift – electric reach stacker, forklifts, and two on-road semi-trucks.
  • SSA Marine – six new pieces of electric cargo handling equipment, including a recently deployed forklift.
  • Pasha – first all-electric car haulers in the U.S.
  • Dole – first on the West Coast to use battery-electric utility tractor rigs (UTRs) for cargo handling.

The Port purchased the battery supported electric cranes from Konecranes for approximately $14 million, paid for through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and California Coronavirus Fiscal Recovery Funds, administered by the California State Lands Commission. The Port also spent an additional $8.9 million on electrical infrastructure improvements to support the cranes, which included $2.7 million in grant funding from the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District.

TAMT, one of the Port’s two marine cargo terminals, serves as an omni-cargo terminal consisting of a 96-acre facility and handles breakbulk, bulk, container, and project cargos for solar, wind and hydroelectric power installations, steel, and engines used in local shipbuilding as well as private yachts, refrigerated cargo, soda ash, sugar, paper reams, and more.
