Monaco, a tiny city-state on the French Riviera, has a reputation as the playground of the rich and famous. The streets of Monaco are lined with high-end casinos, high-end retail shops, luxury hotels, and Michelin-starred restaurants, catering to the affluent crowd who come here to indulge themselves. Every year, the prestigious city hosts the Formula One Grand Prix, attracting some of the world’s wealthiest individuals. While it’s perfectly normal to see multi-million dollar superyachts docked alongside the race course for the perfect view, it’s rare to see a classic Ferrari F40 displayed on the deck of one.

You might be feeling deja vu because a similar flex was recently performed by an Australian businessman. Adrian Portelli hoisted his $3 million McLaren Senna GTR up 57 floors to the top of a luxury residential tower in Melbourne. An entire side of the building was deconstructed to help a crew get the vehicle up that high.

Just Monaco things! Ferrari F40 parked on a yacht ahead of F1 race

' src=

It’s that time of the year when the rich and the famous descend upon Monaco to watch 20 drivers race for glory on the streets of the principality. The Monaco Harbour is among the best spots to watch the grand prix. It’s jam-packed with expensive yachts during a race weekend. So, how do you make your pride and joy stand out? Well, you just park your million-dollar Ferrari F40 on your personal ocean liner.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Altr – powered by Lucidao (@altr.trade)

Videos posted on social media reveal a Ferrari F40 being craned onto the deck of a yacht. We’ve witnessed a similar scene recently when Australian businessman Adrian Portelli got his McLaren Senna GTR hoisted to his 57th-floor penthouse in Melbourne.

Altr – a luxury online boutique, has partnered with Italian supercar dealership ‘Car & Car’ to sell high-end exotics on its platform. So, what better way to promote the business than by throwing a party on a luxury yacht on the sidelines of the Monaco grand prix?

World Premiere of Alia Yachts' 45 meter SAN at 2024 Monaco Yacht Show

Bahar

Alia Yachts proudly announces the world debut of the 45-meter custom yacht SAN at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show, scheduled from September 25th to 28th. Following successful sea trials, SAN has been delivered to her owners and is currently at sea. The photos by Charl van Rooy.

Crafted entirely from aluminum, SAN is a masterpiece of modern engineering and design. The yacht , designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design with naval architecture by Lateral Naval Architects, is powered by quadruple Volvo IPS drives, ensuring top-tier performance and efficiency.

One of SAN's standout features is its fully open main deck, which extends from the stern to the bow, framed by full-height glass facades and sliding doors both aft and forward. This innovative design offers an unmatched sense of openness, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. The expansive glass around the salon provides panoramic sea views, and the multi-functional exterior deck furniture adapts for dining, cocktails, or sunbathing. The aft deck’s bulwarks can even fold down to expand the sunbathing area, enhancing the alfresco experience.

Below deck, SAN houses four guest cabins and an owner’s stateroom, all reflecting the owner’s preference for a minimalistic yet richly detailed interior. This elegant accommodation ensures both comfort and style.

Those behind secondary marketplace Altr thought of a unique way to stand out during the Monaco Grand Prix

' src=

Every year, the Monaco Grand Prix attracts a dizzying number of high-profile celebrities, multi-millionaires, and billionaires. In fact, it has become one of the go-to events for these people to flash their wealth and for this weekend’s race, the harbor was filled with dozens of massive privately-owned superyachts. Of them, there was one that really got automotive enthusiasts talking.

This particular superyacht was brought to the Monaco Grand Prix by Altr, a secondary marketplace where small ‘fragments’ of rare collectibles and vehicles can be purchased. For example, a Rolex Daytona 6265/8 was recently sold and split into 500 fragments, meaning any collector can purchase as little as 1 fragment, or 0.2% of the watch.

For the F1 extravaganza, Altr partnered with Italian luxury car dealership Car & Car and loaded a rare Ferrari F40 onto the front deck of the yacht. The yacht then explored the Mediterranean before arriving at its parking spot in the tiny principality’s marina.

As you can imagine, having a bright red F40 sitting on the deck of the yacht made it stand out from all others in Monaco. Of course, it’s not particularly practical as the legendary supercar had to be craned onto the yacht and obviously couldn’t be driven once it had been positioned in place.

A staggering array of yachts were present throughout the weekend. One of the largest of them all is dubbed Octopus and is a 126.2-meter vessel that was recently used on a trip around Antarctica. It can accommodate up to 26 guests and is available to charter for an eye-watering $2.2 million per week. The yacht used by Altr is known as Quinta Essentia and is a 55m yacht available to charter from €280,000 ($300,000) per week.

From the archives: 9 decades of yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix

In the heart of the Monaco, yachting and Formula One always been inextricably linked; here are some historic photos through the decades.

1934: Classic yachts keep their distance

Yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix are blessed with a trackside view as the race snakes along Monaco's waterfront and harbour. Since the Monaco Grand Prix began in 1929, the race has grown and changed with the times. So too have the yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix .

What is now the biggest and most glamorous automobile race came from humble beginnings – the first Monaco Grand Prix saw 16 participants vying for a prize of 100,000 francs. The photo above shot in 1934 shows Pierre Veyron driving a Type 51 Bugatti ahead of Carlo Felice Trossi in a Scuderia Ferrari P3 Type B Alfa Romeo.

What makes this photo stand out – besides the now-historic F1 cars – is the yachts in the background, what we would certainly now consider “classics”.

This doesn’t mean these were small vessels by any means. Some of the top classic yachts in the world were delivered in the early 1900s, such as the 60.96 metre Madiz , built in 1902, and the 83.21 metre Dannenborg , built in 1931, which bears a striking resemblance to the yacht to the far right.

1955: Sailing yachts dominate

In this photo from 1955, we see Cesare Perdisa driving a Maserati 250F, moving over to allow Juan Manuel Fangio in the Mercedes-Benz W196 and his teammate Stirling Moss in the Mercedes-Benz W196 pass by.

But the scene stealers are the graceful sailing yachts in the background. The prevalence of sailing yachts in attendance at the Monaco Grand Prix – many more than motor yachts this particular year – is notable. Quite a difference from today where it’s predominantly large motor yachts crowding the harbour.

1972: Motor yachts join the party

In 1972, the F1 race cars are starting to look more modern than the yachts that line the harbour. But don’t let this fool you, yachts are keeping apace.

Only a year later, for instance, the Jon Bannenberg design The One , launched as Carinthia VI , debuts – which is still regarded as one of the most beautiful yachts in the world and has gone on to inspire modern builds like Lürssen’s Limitless .

In the photo above, French driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise drives his BRM to victory, winning the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix. The yachts in background watching the race all fly the classic pennant flags and look very stately indeed.

1988: Yachts berth close to the track

Ah, the 80s. Big hair, big shoulder pads and a big focus on yacht windows. Aside from the classic yacht (third one in) with the Portuguese bridge, all the motor yachts trackside at the Monaco Grand Prix in this picture from 1988 have some rather interesting superstructure design choices that place them in this particular era.

Aggressively angled wheelhouses, triangular shaped windows and tinted blue flybridge windscreens are on trend. Also trending, only half the yachts are now flying pennants and there seems to be a lot of swimwear as the outfit of choice and a lot more skin on show.

Here we can see that the yachts are clearly starting to take centre stage, with McLaren Honda driver Alain Prost of France racing past them – he finished first place that year.

1990: Yachts line the seawall

This shot of yachts at the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix aptly depicts the end game of yachts’ migration over the decades as they've moved from out in the harbour to the seawall in the Port of Hercules.

Perhaps what's most striking in this photo is how different security is from today; no gates, no guards and the yachts firmly affixed to the wall rather than floating just off and tendering guests in.

Alain Prost of France drives his Scuderia Ferrari SpA Ferrari 641 Ferrari V12 past the yachts moored stern-to in the harbour during a practice for the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix.

1996: Sponsorship along the race track in full effect

The mid-1990s saw sponsorship and advertising along the race track on the harbour rise to its full effect. Now yachts along the quay not only enjoyed a front row view of the racing action, but were unable to escape being inundated by advertising and branding of all kinds. Welcome to the modern world of sports.

The photo above shows the warm-up lap before the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix. The cars, starting from the front, are Mika Hakkinen (McLaren), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Sauber), Jacques Villeneuve (Williams), Mika Salo (Tyrrell), Jos Verstappen (Footwork) and Johnny Herbert (Sauber). The partially hidden car behind Johnny Herbert's is the Ligier of Olivier Panis, who took the top podium spot at the 1996 MGP.

2006: Yacht security boosted

In 2006, we see the yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix coming into their full form. The harbour is brimming with yachts of all sizes, from classic motor yachts to sporty open yachts and, in the middle of the port, the very large superyachts and even a sailing yacht of superyacht proportions.

What we see here in particular is how security has changed, a stark contrast to the photo from 1990. Less than two decades later, yachts are not content to snug along the seawall with nary a guard in site. Now even the smaller yachts have a fence surrounding them, and the larger yachts are moored off the wall to the north side of the harbour, with yacht tenders ferrying guests out to them.

In a very lively Monaco Grand Prix this year, that saw crashes and some ferocious over taking, the win went to Fernando Alonso.

2016: Superyachts flock to Port Hercules

As the race has grown into the most important and glamorous of automotive races, so too has spectator element of enjoying the prestigious perch of watching the Monaco Grand Prix from a yacht. Every year, more and more yachts squeeze into Port Hercules for the event – or anchor offshore – hosting fabulous parties attended by yacht owners and their VIP guests, yacht charterers and celebrities.

Nine decades after the Monaco Grand Prix premiered in the petite principality of Monaco, and the yachts are night and day to those seen in the early years. No less than 171 superyachts were spotted in and out of the harbour on the first practice day (May 27), including 82.3 metre Secret , 75.5 metre Boadicea , 99 metre Madame Gu .

2017: More yachts attend than ever before

As the years have gone by, the yachts in attendance have only grown in size and number. In this photo taken at 2017's Monaco Grand Prix, this is evident, with the harbour at Port Hercules filled by superyachts and even a cruise ship.

The fee to be docked berth side for the Monaco Grand Prix can be up to €16,625 per day for a 60-metre yacht, which is nearly 14 times more than the typical summer season rate of €1,200 per day. Booking must take place far in advance. But there are likely many more yachts that would pay it if they could, as the harbour fills up every year. What isn't pictured is the bay just beyond the harbour, which is also filled with an incredible amount of superyachts.

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco put on a friendly display as they enjoyed a family holiday in Corsica this week.

The royal couple jetted off with Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, both nine, for a relaxing break this week. They were seen splashing around in the sea together as they played with their children in the warm waves, enjoying the last of the summer sun.

Prince Albert, who donned a black, blue and white wetsuit for the outing, could be seen tossing a ball to Princess Gabriella, who opted for a baby pink t-shirt for the occasion. Ever the attentive mother, Princess Charlene could be seen beaming from the deck of the yacht and snapping photographs of the trio playing together.

Over the years, the couple have found their marriage under the microscope, with European tabloids reporting the couple are living in separate countries . Charlene was said to be living in Switzerland while Albert remained in Monaco with their twins Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella. Yet the new images appeared to suggest there has been a change for the couple, showing Albert and Charlene apparently happier than ever.

On the eve of the US presidential election back in 2020, friends, DC insiders and Melania herself told Ben Judah how a small-time Slovenian fashion model rose to wear the mantle of First Lady

In fact, they have made a number of high profile public appearances together in recent months, including attending the Olympics and Monaco E-Prix side-by-side.

The family are likely enjoying their quality time together before the new school year starts for Jacques and Gabriella in the next few weeks. Speaking last year, Charlene revealed how her children have been enjoying school.

In this feature, first published in 2015, David Jenkins questioned if peace had finally come to Jamie Blandford…and what sort of man he is

She said, 'Jacques and Gabriella were both very excited to see their friends again after such a long vacation. It's also the first time that they won't be in the same class.

'It's a big step for them, and that seems good to me. So, like for any student on their first day back at school, they had a lot of expectations about their new classmates, their teachers, about what they were going to wear for their first day.'
