MAIN Yacht – High-end $65M Superyacht

The MAIN yacht is a 65.0m superyacht built in 2008 and delivered later that year by Codecasa at their shipyard in Viareggio.

She is the largest yacht ever built by the Italian company, being the first hull in its 65.0m series. She is also in the top 5% by LOA and she is currently sailing under the Italian flag.

The MAIN yacht’s interior was penned by Italian design house Ortelli Achitetti and the yacht.

A monochromatic palette decorates the inside of the vessel, perfectly matching the natural birchwood and marble.

Armani designed a lot of the furniture and decor in their in-house interiors divisions.

Armani himself insisted on designing the blinds and windows, as he wanted to ensure a panoramic view of the ocean.

Overall, MAIN features a combination of a minimalist and modern Asian style that can be found all over the ship.

MAIN can easily accommodate 12 guests in seven comfortable suites, one master suite, and six guest cabins.

She is also capable of carrying 14 crew members on board, including the captain of the yacht.

Some of the luxurious amenities the MAIN yacht has to offer are a large sundeck jacuzzi, cinema, spa pool, indoor gym, and an electric fireplace.

The MAIN yacht features exterior design by Codesa, as well as naval architecture.

Her exterior is built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

The vessel’s sleek appearance was designed to hide all technical details that could “stain” her spotless aesthetic.

Unlike many others, MAIN was created to camouflage at sea with a dark-green exterior color, according to the owner.

Her unique style was inspired by military vessels.

Specifications

This 65.0m superyacht has an 11.2m beam, a 3.7m draft, and a volume of 11.47 GT.

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (2,470HP) engines, the MAIN yacht cruises at 14 knots, reaching a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of 6,910 n/M.

She has a fuel capacity of 160,000 liters.

She is fitted with zero-speed stabilizers, which make the onboard experience even more comfortable. In 2008, the MAIN yacht received the RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) certification.

Currently, MAIN is not for sale or available for private charter. However, her current price is $65 million with her annual running cost fluctuating between $6 – $14 million.

The Most Exciting Superyacht Interiors of 2022

By Heather Collier

Superyachts.com reflects on the some of the most memorable and remarkable superyacht interiors unveiled and showcased over the course of the past year.

Lady Lene In May of this year, interior images of the 34 metre fully custom Van der Valk explorer yacht Lady Lene were unveiled for the very first time, and was publicly presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival last month. The all-aluminium tri-deck superyacht is instantly recognisable by her golden-bronze hull, fast-displacement round bilge hull and wave-piercing bow. However, Lady Lene’s interiors more than rival her sleek and sturdy exterior. Accommodating up to 10 guests, the client's brief included five staterooms: two master, one of them on the bridge deck with a private balcony, two spacious and comfortable VIP, and a guest cabin, as well as six crew members in a captain's cabin and two crew cabins. The intention for Lady Lene's interior was to create a calming effect throughout. Using materials such as fluted wood, a popular material in the 1920s and 30s, as well as natural oak, silk georgette stone, leather, and suede, the design team were able to create a cosy yet luxurious feel.

Subtle champagne gold metal touches also help create a harmonious connection between the spaces, masterfully executed by the artisans of the Van der Valk Shipyard. The main deck expands from the spacious dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows and hideable cabinetry over a residential kitchen with full-size side-by-side fridge and freezer and a six-burner induction cooktop at the bow all the way through the saloon to the large al-fresco dining and lounge areas on the extended aft deck, with a seamless transition from inside to outside areas.

Goga Described by Benetti as a 'new chapter' in this historic shipyard's journey, Goga offers a transformative 'new concept of space' to those onboard.

Rather uniquely for a yacht of 37m, guest cabins have been elevated on to the main deck, a feature more common of a much larger yacht. Her bridge can also have a veranda or a private owner deck, which is rare for a yacht of her size, and more typical of yachts 55m+.

Her interior was designed in-house by Mauro Izzo. Through Izzo and Giorgetti Design's careful and meticulous planning of each room and hand-selected piece, Goga provides guests with enhanced comfort through bright and contemporary spaces. To reach the upper deck, guests will find an alluring central stairway in the midst of elegant interior and exterior dining areas and the main saloon. Goga provides an expansive, open plan space that leads onto a foredeck area with a pool and more seating.

Up one more level is the owner’s cabin, with its own private terrace with a large sundeck just above. Guests can enjoy an uninterrupted, 360 degree view through glass that spans the entirety of the main lounge and outdoor terraces.

With an al fresco dining space dubbed as "fun island", guests can enjoy dining and lounging right by the water's edge, with huge, comfortable stairs to enter it whenever they please. In terms of accomodation, there are two further double cabins on the lower deck, bringing the total number of guest cabins to seven.

There is total separation of guests and crew, with all crew and service areas concentrated on the lower deck; granting guests the pleasure of full privacy.

A garage and huge beach club can also be found below, with tenders and toy storage dedicated. The beach area also offers a shower, sauna and laundry as well as space to store furniture and other items when guests desire to relax at sea level. Al Waab No stranger to opulence, Al Waab’s décor bears a stunning, gold wall installation, with integrated crystals that elegantly dress the stairwell and all three decks. Glass also appears to be a key feature, resulting in uninterrupted sight lines, creating a smooth, glacial pace for guests when moving between spaces.

Glass bulwarks provide uninterrupted outboard views and large outdoor areas for guests to enjoy the vistas in a secluded, plush setting. With a drop-down bulwark in the main dining area, the idea of a traditional dining room vanishes completely, complimented by a stunning alfresco breakfast space – just two metres above the water on the starboard deck. Her sprawling beach club in the stern is another highlight, along with a jacuzzi forward of the owner’s stateroom.

The use of virtual reality was also implemented early on in the project to optimise the space planning and ergonomic layout. Open-plan, owner-centric general arrangements are guaranteed to create a true sense of freedom for all onboard, sleeping up to 18 guests for both owners and guests.

Rare for a 499GT yacht, she includes a lavish split-level master suite on the upper deck with a private 4m pool on the foredeck. By placing the tender bay in a sunken deck in the bow, the tenders are easily accessible yet hidden from view. The grated ‘tween deck arrangement provides storage for two tenders, a pair of jet skis, and other water toys and amenities.

Much of the living and seating areas are outward facing, sketched with the sentiment of letting owners form an intimate, unforgettable connection with the sea. Bold Bold's interior boasts a seamless blend of luxury and practicality, offering a sleek range of oak and teak, accompanied by metallic painted features and oak and marble flooring, all centred around an extravagant sky lounge. Accommodating 12 guests in 8 luxury cabins, including an owner’s suite, 3 VIP cabins and 4 double guest cabins, while a further 13 cabins can allow a crew of over 20 onboard the Lower Deck, she is plentiful in room.

On her top deck, Bold features additional, expansive party spaces, including a secluded jacuzzi and 2,700-litre, glistening spa pool alongside a cosy firepit and equipment to set up and indulge in your own private cinema.

For owners who find joy in entertaining, look no further than the main banqueting space – complete with a bar, serving stations, two rotisseries and an induction hob, all to satisfy any guest's culinary needs.

The aft section of the Bridge Deck also features removable railings that allow space for a second helicopter, but perhaps what is most impressive, is the winter garden located on the Owner's Deck. When unveiled, this tranquil space acts as a large terrace, open to the sea breeze and breath-taking panoramic views of the water. The 300 sqm interior loft is designed to feel like a New York loft apartment and uniquely brings everyone together in a modern, open plan space with full height windows. Perhaps most dramatic is the contrast between the interior spaces and utilitarian exterior spaces – especially when viewed from the wintergarden.

Bold's aft deck opens up to a 400sqm multi-purpose open space capable of storing large tenders, sailboats, cars or submarines – a feature very few yachts can match. With a full wall LED screen and impressive sound system in the heli hanger, this space can be used for a movie, disco or an indoor/outdoor gym.

How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior

Before you take your new yacht on the high seas, the first task is designing its interiors.

By Elite Traveler

yacht main interior

So you’ve had your taste of sailing the high seas – you’ve done the cruises , the private charters and even walked the rounds at the yacht shows – and decided that your love of the ocean requires something more; a yacht of your own. However, if you have purchased a vessel that has not been pre-designed or furnished, the next task will be designing superyacht interiors to fit your requirements.

Much like the design of private jets, the size and usage of a yacht will be the main factors in how the vessel is designed. How many cabins will it have? How many leisure spaces? Will you need space to carry out work or entertain guests?

One of the easiest ways to get around these questions is to work with a yacht interior designer , who can help you work through all the decisions and will also have knowledge of the health and safety requirements of any vessel before it is certified as sea-worthy. Although we would highly recommend seeking expert opinion, it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about what interiors you would like to see in your yacht.

Elite Traveler has put together a collection of interior options including everything from lighting to dinnerware, to spark your imagination and help you start creating the perfect superyacht interiors.

One of the most important considerations for both the style of your superyacht interiors and the safety aspect will be the furniture you choose. Depending on the size of your yacht, you may also have several rooms to furnish – giving you the opportunity to create your ideal lounge, dining space, office, cabin and even a gym or onboard cinema.

No matter the type of room, you are sure to find something that suits your style with Visionnaire. The luxury furniture company has been making world-class pieces since launching in 2005, with a strong focus on high-quality, natural materials. We particularly love the stunning Pavone Armchair , a statement piece that comes in a range of colors and metal finishes.

For beautiful and sustainable woodwork, opt for British furniture manufacturer RAFT. The brand is best known for using sustainable teak that is tried and crafted in Indonesia; the wood is naturally pest-resistant and durable, growing without heavy irrigation or fertilizers. RAFT’s Teak Root Glass Dining Table is a great option for any dining space, coming in a variety of sizes with a contemporary look that will work well with a variety of styles.

If you’re looking for something more bespoke and selective for your furniture pieces, look no further than Glyn Peter Machin . The designer and his team have been crafting bespoke furniture and accessories for over 20 years, with a portfolio of works that covers private residences and superyachts across the world. One of the brand’s latest pieces is a vibrant wireless Audio Cabinet that acts both as a work of art and a functional addition to any cinema room.

Accessories

One part of interior design that is often overlooked is the accessories within a room – but these can often be the final touches that finalize a space and harmonize it. For example, a well-chosen dining table will need dinnerware that has also been thoughtfully chosen. We prefer luxurious homeware brand L’OBJET’s Aegean Filet collection in gold; its finish is subtle and won’t detract from the food being served, but also has a slightly nautical touch with the scale-like gold trim.

If you’re planning on entertaining onboard your yacht, it’s impossible to go wrong with Baccarat – the global luxury icon that has been handcrafting beautiful crystal objects for over 250 years, ranging from stand-out decorative pieces to exquisite table and barware. To really make an impression when the celebrations get started, cool your champagne in Baccarat’s Harcourt Champagne Cooler .

When thinking about other types of accessories or final touches to pull a space together cohesively, don’t forget about artwork and how this can play a part in your superyacht interiors. For a stylish, lifelike sculpture to act as a statement piece within any room onboard, opt for a work by Hamish Mackie . The British sculptor is particularly interested in wildlife and capturing the spirit of the animals, with pieces being cast in bronze and silver.

When it comes to superyacht interiors, another important aspect of the design is the materials that are used throughout the vessel – these should be both stylish and seaworthy, adding to the style of a room while still complying with safety checks. A yacht interior designer will know how to approach this, but there are several brands that specialize in yacht materials worth knowing, in case you are planning a specific look onboard your yacht.

Studioart , for example, is a manufacturer of high-quality upholstery leathers and wall coverings, which mixes innovative technologies with the heritage and craftwork of leather making. This careful balance has meant that the brand can now be found in private yachts, homes and jets across the globe. For other types of surfaces, we love Nature Squared – an innovative company transforming sustainable, natural materials into high-quality surfaces and finishes for a range of products, private homes, yachts and more.

Finally, no list of yacht-worthy materials would be complete without mention of the world-renowned House of Tai Ping : the brand creates some of the most exquisite handmade and woven carpets in the world, which can be found everywhere from five-star hotels to private jet and yacht interiors. In fact, the brand has its own Yacht Division, which was founded in 2002, making it even easier to translate its beautiful designs into pieces that can work on your yacht.

Superyacht Interior Design Trends: 2021 and Beyond

Written By: Naomi Chadderton

Design trends in the superyacht world are dictated less by the latest colours or gadgets and more by lifestyle choices, with interior designers constantly on the lookout for ways to take the user experience to the next level.

Cloud 9 Winch Design 1200x800

While most of the world may have slowed down during the pandemic, the superyacht interior design industry seems to be booming, with British studio Winch Design seeing a rise in yacht refurbishments over the last year. “Just as everyone saw 2020 as the year to knuckle down and target those home projects that had been pushed to the side, it was the same for superyachts,” says Jim Dixon, director of yachts and aviation.

“Many owners took the time to take care of the maintenance, ensuring their yachts are in the best condition possible for when restrictions are lifted. There has also been an increase in the time spent on yachts, with many owners seeing them as the perfect places to quarantine or set up a bubble. This, in turn, has also provided an increase in refurbishments with the clients’ needs shifting to accommodate these longer stays.”

Mark Berryman, founder of Mark Berryman Design agrees, explaining that: “As new builds can take between three and a half to five years from start to finish, clients are hoping that Covid-19 will be gone by this point and are therefore planning for the future.”

Key Superyacht Interior Trends for 2021

From advancements in green design trends to the new and exciting ways that glass is being used on board, we explore the key yacht interior trends to look out for in 2021 and beyond.

Sustainability and Carbon Reduction

As superyacht owners get younger and more in tune with the climate change around us, shipbuilders have been making waves in the industry with developments that lessen the damage on our marine environment, with regard to propulsion, reducing carbon footprints and creating more energy-efficient vessels. As to be expected, a growing eco-conscience in the superyacht industry is leading the way for sustainable interior design too, as studios cite sustainable alternatives to damaging onboard materials.

Black Pearl 1200x800

Black Pearl is one of the greenest superyachts on the water

At the forefront of the movement is Winch Design, where interior teams have been working hard to incorporate an extensive selection of sustainable materials into its sample library, allowing them to offer environmentally friendly solutions for every design. “Organisations such as the Water Revolution Foundation are developing tools that enable the industry to assess its environmental impact – not just in terms of CO2 emissions from a yacht, but a full life-cycle assessment based on the most important indicators of environmental impact,” says Dixon.

“The tools don’t only assess the entire yacht, the build process or the operation, but can also assess a subsystem or focus only on the hull construction or machinery on board. It’s important to take the life-cycle assessment approach to know what real sustainable choices are – not just for the operation or the build,” he adds. As such, they have had plenty of success substituting traditional finishes such as shagreen and horn with faux versions including olive-tanned and plant-based leathers, as well as fabrics such as organic cotton and bamboo which are much kinder to our planet.

Mark Berryman 1200x800 2

Mark Berryman is known for his use of sustainable materials

Berryman is also passionate about incorporating sustainable materials into his designs, something that fits perfectly with his signature style. “Thanks to our relaxed contemporary in house style with accents of Asian influence, the issue of sustainability often isn’t a problem for us,” he explains. “We use natural materials that are plentiful and easily replaceable, such as bamboos, rattans and wood veneers of non-rare species. We no longer find our clients asking for rare or non-sustainable finishes.”

Lighting Technology

As lighting technology rapidly evolves, it presents an incredible array of opportunities both on board superyachts and beyond and, as something that used to run as an afterthought, things have been improving rapidly as of late, with lighting now being considered as an integral part of the interior and being detailed into joinery.

“Lighting is one of the most important aspects of all interiors, not only yachts,” Pavel May, head of the Maritime Program at Preciosa Lighting tells Superyacht Stories. “When you enter a room, the first thing you notice is the mood and feeling the space presents. This is what lighting does: creates the desired mood and feel. Installations are becoming more minimalistic and focused on the details – these days, light fixtures are basically a work of art.”

Preciosa 1200x800

Preciosa Lighting

A recurring trend that we expect to continue is the use of lighting within natural elements such as natural stone – “these lights illuminate the surroundings without being too harsh on the eyes,” explains Dixon. Elsewhere, LED lighting placed behind a gas-filled panel that replicates the earth’s air make-up is also picking up speed. “It means that when you turn the LED light on, the panel feels like a skylight with real sunlight behind it,” explains Berryman.

“This is great for spaces such as beach clubs which work so well during good conditions with shell doors that fold down, but when the weather is not permitting they can feel quite dark with smaller windows set into the doors. This new LED panel technology creates a fantastic effect and brings the feeling of natural sunlight into a dark space, and it’s very difficult to tell the difference between that and a real skylight.”

Innovations in Glass

Shipyards have been investing heavily in the research of glass over recent years, leading to more innovative, flexible use of the material for superyacht exteriors. As such, it’s having a positive domino effect on boat interiors too, and as something that both connects and separates at the same time, it’s no surprise that requests for innovative new uses of glass are coming in thick and fast.

In 2020, for example, we saw privacy glass replacing curtains and shades, and in some cases, it even replaced walls. This can be seen in the glass-box owner’s lounge found on the Riva Race ,  or the distorted glass walls that separate the bedroom from the rest of the master on board Hakvoort’s Scout.

Winch Design 1200x800

Winch Design is known for its innovative use of glass

“Designs have become more radical, and we are incorporating more engineering challenges into our designs, for example, the curved double-height glass panels on Excellence, each precision-engineered and weighing over a tonne,” says James Russell, associate and exterior yacht designer at Winch Design. “It’s becoming increasingly important to find ways to make the structural assets of a design merge seamlessly with the design aesthetic.”

A desire for more contemporary spaces is also coming to the fore, often open plan with huge expanses of glass allowing light to flood in and the guests to feel close to nature. As such, it allows the landscape to become a backdrop for the interior itself.

“Glass in the use of the exterior is really helping the interior spaces,” agrees Berryman. “We found on MY Life Saga, which we completed in 2019, that the size of the windows had a fantastic effect on the interior spaces. Again with a neutral palette of warm wood tones and calming natural fabrics, the sunlight filtering into these spaces was amazing. Not only did the interior benefit from being flooded with light, but also the guests benefitted from uninterrupted views of the ocean.”

Relaxed, Calming Design Aesthetic

Fashioning a place you want to relax in that also remains a symbol of status is a quandary most superyacht owners will face at least once in their lifetimes. While owners would once upon a time have expressed a degree of majestic power through lavish colour schemes, today’s narrative places far more importance on relaxation and calm. Here, natural earthy tones take pride of place. “These shades connect back to nature and create a feeling of stability,” says Dixon. “The world is becoming more at one with nature and there has been an increase in demand for matching the designs to the natural landscape.”

Amels 60 Winch Design 1200x800

An natural colour palette on board MY Amels 60 (Winch Design)

Think sky blues, sage greys, classic whites and blush tones; 2021 is all about less show and more sand, with a bare-foot luxury beach club vibe increasingly popular. Coaxing a laid-back palette with plenty of natural materials, these calming colours work to warm up any space. “We tend to use oak as a backdrop to our interiors as this means you can highlight areas with dark furniture punctuations that contrast beautifully,” adds Berryman. “Bamboos and leathers are a firm favourite for us to create a warmth to our interiors. We always try to create a space that feels like a home from home.”

Gadgets and Onboard Audiovisual Technology

Millennial superyacht owners aren't only more in touch with sustainability issues, but technological advancements too, with the yachting mindset slowly shifting from simply buying a product to having experiences. And when it comes to technology on board, we’ve never had it so good. From simple gadgets and gizmos to connectivity advancements, what the owner wants the owner can most definitely get.

“We’ve designed yachts with speaker systems situated on the sundeck which pump out enough volume in such a way that the owner could ride around on their jet ski and still listen to music if they wanted to,” says Dixon. “We’ve also designed helipads which can be converted into an outdoor cinema through the use of hidden speakers and screens.”

15 Metre TV Wall Proposal

Technological capabilities in movie screenings are becoming even more advanced (Mark Berryman Design)

In fact, requests for technological advancements in cinemas and movie screenings are increasing exponentially. Mark Berryman says he’s finding cinemas with interactive seating that convey movement that relates to the film being watched, to be very popular. “Clients always want larger screen sizes for their TVs, and new large interior and exterior models are now available for all weather conditions," he says. "We put a dance floor on a boat recently that was made up of individual monitor panels where anything could be broadcast onto them which was very exciting, if not a strange experience trying to send emails from my phone whilst having them streamed to the dance floor beneath my feet!”

Onboard Spas

Health and wellness is a growing trend and that’s reflected in superyacht spas as well. Onboard spas are now routinely fully-equipped gyms, saunas, steam rooms, treatment rooms, beauty salons and the works. The spa is no longer a simple extension of the beach club. “Technological capabilities on board superyacht spas are second to none,” agrees Dixon. “We use companies who create holistic life-spa experiences which combine traditional spa methods with new technology and hurtle spa experiences into the future. We’ve also designed one aviation concept which has an aromatherapy shower on a jet!”

The pandemic has slowed much of the world down, but the superyacht industry has boomed and it has taken the yachting interior design sector along for the ride. Key trends emerging in yacht interior design this year include a focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness, major advances in the use of lighting, innovations in glass, design aesthetics that focus on creating calming environments, large onboard spas, and a major adoption of gadgets and AV technology.

Superyacht Interiors: The Top Luxury Designs

Office Ideas

Everyone knows that a yacht or superyacht is nothing without a luxury interior. Indeed, there’s now a whole range of interior designers who either specialize in or regularly create yacht interiors. So, how do you find the best projects? Here at Insplosion, we want to help. That’s why we’ve gathered a list of our top luxury superyacht interiors !

Yacht fans may also like: Sabrina Monte-Carlo: Famous Interior Designers of Monaco

Brigadoon | studio indigo.

Including the Brigadoon in this list is pretty mandatory. After all, this luxury yacht by Studio Indigo is an actual winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2019! Thus, this project is all about the grand but understated mid-century luxury decor. The flowers, the wood, and navy-colored details combine to make this into a pretty classic luxury boat interior. Indeed, it’s the beautiful and neutral harmony that truly takes this project to the next level.

Studio Indigo Yacht Brigadoon

Besides, it’s quite a practical design. As you can see, the bedrooms and closets are amazingly organized. It’s all about luxury, yes, but also about comfort and practicality. The high seas are no place for clutter, which can cause accidents in bad weather.

But, in contrast with the brown color palette, you have this lovely deck area. With its slightly japandi style influences, this is the perfect place to relax in at the end of a long day.

Aurora Borealis | Winch Design

The Aurora Borealis does justice to its namesake. Indeed, it is as white and bright of an interior as the aurora itself. However, there are all sorts of little decor elements which are reminiscent of the sea. Just notice the shell-shaped ashtray and sea-horse patterns on some of the pillows! Finally, the mid-century lighting really adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

Aurora Borealis Yacht by Wich Design

But there’s much more to admire. How do you like the lovely art deco bar? The lines themselves almost remind you of corals and shells. And the airy, light decor is just as present in the dining and living areas. While just as luxurious, this interior is much different from the Brigadoon’s.

Finally, we’ll leave you with this gorgeous view of the yacht’s deck at night. Once again, the seatings and patterns are chosen to be evocative of the ocean. It’s as gorgeous of a yacht design as you could ask for.

Superyacht Forever | St. Corona Interiors

If you’re looking for something equally light, but much more sober, look no further than Superyacht Forever . This creation by St. Corona Interiors also follows a white color scheme, but the decor elements aren’t quite as feminine. There’s not as much art deco influence here. The lines are much cleaner and simpler, almost minimalist compared to the glamour of the previous project.

Yacht Interior by St.Corona Interiors

Snøhetta – A Norwegian Firm Defining The Design Scene

The bar and living room area follow more or less the same route. Indeed, they favor light color schemes and clean, shapely lines. It’s all about practical luxury, functional without being quite minimalist.

Finally, we have the bedroom. While not opulent in the slightest, this room has the same sort of stylish beauty as the rest of the interior. Once again: you don’t want clutter on the high seas!

Logica | Martin Kemp Design

At last, we reach the Logica .  This project for a luxury yacht by Marin Kemp Design is everything our interior decor dreams are made of. Like the Aurora, it takes a much more art deco approach to superyacht interiors. The little metal details are just what we like to call luxury hardware!

Logica Yacht by Martin Kemp

The bedroom and living space designs follow very similar color schemes and strategies. Since you can’t have any clutter, it’s all about denoting luxury through the tiniest details.

Finally, you have the bathroom project, which is as light and gorgeous as the rest of the design. It’s a luxury bathroom through and through.

So, which of these superyacht interiors did you prefer?

Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Sitting area inside a yacht

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Interiors of main deck lounge on a yacht

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Luxury at Sea: The Ultimate Guide to Yacht Interior Design

Introduction to yacht interior design.

Yacht interior design is an artful mix of beauty, elegance and tech . Aesthetics coupled with functional designs give a unique experience on board. Color palettes and use of space are carefully thought out for a luxe feel .

Creating yacht interiors needs close attention to detail . Colors, furniture, accessories and lighting fixtures contribute to the ambiance. Owners, designers and builders work together to bring the desired look to life.

Eco-friendly materials are a growing trend in yacht interior design. Energy-efficient lighting systems and recyclable furniture create a more sustainable environment.

Functionality and luxurious aesthetics must be balanced to make the experience unforgettable. Hidden storage areas are essential to keep necessary items on hand without detracting from the look.

Factors to Consider when Designing Yacht Interiors

To optimize your yacht’s interior design, keep in mind key factors like space, materials, and style. Aim for maximum layout optimization, while choosing durable materials that harmonize with the yacht’s aesthetics. Explore the overall style and aesthetics to bring luxury and comfort to the high seas.

Space and Layout Optimization

Designing a yacht’s interior requires consideration of multiple factors. To optimize space and create a stunning look, customizing every aspect is key. This includes functional spaces like saloons, galleys, staterooms, and communal areas .

Layout optimization calls for proper circulation flow. Designers must choose materials that are attractive, functional, and durable. Cabinetry design is also important, as it provides storage and adds visual value.

Lighting and color choices can also be used to optimize space. Lighter hues on walls give an illusion of space in low deck height ceilings. LED lighting strips can be used to show off custom features at night.

Pro Tip : Don’t overcrowd the interior with furniture; instead, opt for hidden or collapsible features that offer multiple functions while maximizing available square footage. Invest in materials that will last longer than your last relationship .

Material Selection and Durability

Material selection is key for a yacht interior that is both beautiful and long-lasting. Strength, durability, appearance, and cost should all be taken into account.

Some common materials used for yacht interiors are:

  • Leather: Durable, soft, and comfortable.
  • Wood: Classic look, versatile, and strong.
  • Marble: Elegant, costly, and easy to clean.
  • Fabric: Plenty of colors and textures.

Each material has its own pros and cons. For example, leather may be long-lasting and comfortable, but it can crack over time if not properly cared for. Water resistance and ease of cleaning should also be considered. Anti-microbial fabrics or wood finishes can keep mold and mildew at bay. High traffic areas need tougher materials. Cabins, on the other hand, can have more delicate fabrics as they don’t get much use.

Sturdy materials are ideal when it comes to yacht interiors – they should be able to withstand wear and tear and maximize space utilization. Luxury and practicality should always be balanced. After all, no one wants to slip on marble floors in high seas!

Overall Style and Aesthetics

Designing yacht interiors requires consideration of style and aesthetics . Color schemes, materials, and furniture placement all come into play. A theme or style such as contemporary or traditional can be used. It must be both functional and beautiful, yet luxurious.

Details are key – moldings, lighting fixtures, and spacing of furniture. For instance, a modern-elegant, yet comfortable interior was designed for a client. Neutral tones were accented with gold finishes. Luxurious leather furnishings, custom cabinetry, and high-quality finishes completed the look.

From grandeur to minimalism, yacht interior design themes let you feel like a billionaire – in any boat!

Popular Yacht Interior Design Themes

To explore popular yacht interior design themes, we’ve got you covered with contemporary, classic, and Art Deco yacht interior design ideas. In order to give your yacht an elegant and luxurious appeal, these three sub-sections offer distinct approaches and aesthetics to inspire your yacht’s interior design.

Contemporary Yacht Interior Design

Contemporary yacht interior design is evolving with modern times. Luxury interiors are in demand and designers are coming up with cutting-edge ideas to make every corner of the yacht ooze opulence and comfort. Let’s take a peek at some popular themes:

  • Minimalist – open spaces, clean lines, neutral colors;
  • Nautical – blue/white stripes, sailing artifacts, wood;
  • Industrial – metal accents, raw textures, exposed beams;
  • Luxury – plush carpets, tufted furniture, high-end decor;
  • Modern – sleek forms, innovative materials, bright lights.

To add an extra wow-factor, custom light fixtures and bespoke artwork can be included. Marble countertops or backsplashes can also elevate the look without overpowering the theme. Natural elements like greenery or organic textures bring balance and living experiences, like aromatherapy diffusers, can make for an immersive experience.

When designing a contemporary yacht interior, functionality should not be sacrificed for aesthetics. Creating an efficient use of space while maintaining charm is crucial. A classic yacht interior design is timeless, elegant and never goes out of style. There are unlimited options for creating beautiful contemporary yacht interiors. From selecting exquisite materials to blending colors, planning your dream sail-away destination has endless possibilities.

Classic Yacht Interior Design

Classic yachts feature luxurious interior designs. Rich fabrics like velvet and damask, mahogany wood, teak, leather, and silk create an opulent atmosphere. Intricate details like hand-carved woodwork, crystal chandeliers, and brass fixtures make these vessels stand out.

The Christina O is a classic yacht owned by Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Its interior includes a grand piano played by Frank Sinatra . Even outdoor spaces are adorned with luxurious elements like jacuzzis made from 24-carat gold tiles .

A classic yacht interior never goes out of style . It’s like having a time machine that can transport you to 1920s glamour.

Art Deco Yacht Interior Design

Art Deco is a well-known yacht interior design theme that blends opulent materials with geometric shapes for an exotic look. Chrome, oversized mirrors, glossy wood, and luxurious leather upholstery are all staples of this style. Popular in the 1920s and 30s, Art Deco has continued to inspire modern designers.

Streamlined curves, high-gloss finishes, and contrasting textures, colors, and patterns are the unique features of this yacht interior design. Ornate detailing on furniture like zebra stripes or faux fur throws add richness. Bold geometric tiles and velvet cushions create an elegant atmosphere.

For a successful Art Deco design, layer textures logically . Consider a swirling patterned carpet beneath a lampshade or aviator chairs beneath tiled tables. Exercise restraint while adopting elements. Balance texture playfulness and simplicity for a cohesive look . Transform your yacht interior into a luxury hotel suite and enjoy room service with a wave.

Furniture and Furnishing Ideas for Yacht Interiors

To amp up the interior design of your luxury yacht, check out some furniture and furnishing ideas that can make all the difference. Upgrade your yacht with better seating arrangements, smarter storage solutions, and fancier lighting fixtures.

Seating Arrangements

Seating arrangements are key for yacht interiors. It is important to pick furniture that looks good and offers both comfort and functionality. Let us check out some seating ideas for your yacht.

Type of Seating Ideal Location Features
Sofa Saloon, Cabin High comfort level. Upholstered with stain-resistant fabrics. Many sizes available.
Lounge Chair Saloon, Deck Comfy cushioning. Foldable for storage. Can be used for sunbathing.
Stools and Ottomans Saloon, Dining Area Compact design. Versatile usage as extra seating or footrests.

For a unique touch in your yacht interiors, consider adding seating like bean bags or hanging chairs . These alternative options can add a fun and relaxing feel to your space.

One client wanted a circular sofa for their yacht’s saloon. This sofa had cushions that could be changed into various shapes. This unique and versatile piece gave different seating options for the clients’ guests and also saved space on their yacht.

These storage solutions will make your yacht more spacious, or give you somewhere to hide all those empty champagne bottles!

Storage Solutions

On the hunt for storage solutions for your yacht’s interior? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Install built-in cabinets and shelves that match the yacht’s decor.
  • Make use of under-seat storage by adding custom-made drawers or compartments.
  • Hanging organizers are ideal for smaller items like clothes, shoes and accessories.
  • Multi-functional furniture pieces such as ottomans or coffee tables with hidden storage spaces can help you save space.
  • Stack bins or wall-mounted baskets to maximize vertical space.

For a touch of sophistication, opt for materials like teak wood or stainless steel – they are both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Don’t let clutter ruin the luxury of yachting. Put everything in its place and make your interior visually appealing. Take control of the organization and get ready to show off your yacht in style. Now, unleash your inner designer and let your yacht sparkle with these storage solutions.

Lighting Fixtures

Lighting in yacht interiors serves more than one purpose. It illuminates the space and adds to the ambiance. Different types of lighting are used for different functions.

For example:

  • Overhead lighting: Main source of illumination
  • Accent lighting: To highlight specific features
  • Task lighting: Specific activities like reading or cooking

Installing dimmer switches is recommended for adjustable lighting intensity. LED lights are energy efficient and long lasting. Choose light fixtures that fit the style and complement the yacht’s existing furnishings. For example, modern yachts may use contemporary fixtures while traditional yachts may use brass.

Did you know that chandeliers were originally used in sailing ships to reduce the swinging of suspended lights? Now they are a staple in luxury yachts, adding elegance and sophistication. Who needs art when you’ve got the open sea?

Art and Decor for Yacht Interiors

To create a stunning yacht interior, look no further than the art and decor techniques in this guide. Enhance the look and feel of your yacht interior by incorporating painting and murals, sculptures and artifacts, and textile and upholstery design. Each sub-section offers unique solutions for creating a luxurious and personalized atmosphere on your yacht.

Painting and Murals

Artwork is essential for yacht interiors. Paintings and Murals bring sophistication and elegance . They add depth, character, and warmth to the decor. Paintings are focal points, without distracting from other elements . Murals can be customized to reflect the owner’s unique style.

Painting creates intimacy in larger yachts. Commissioned artwork allows owners to work with an artist for a personalized masterpiece. Smaller cabins can benefit from paintings that reflect each passenger’s personality. Different colors and textures help create a relaxed atmosphere. They balance the design elements and create breathtaking visuals.

Paintings have been used to transform spaces for centuries. Steve Penley was commissioned by Carolina Outdoor Recreational Equipment (CORE) for their Rinker 29QX project. When decorating a yacht, consider adding custom-made paintings by established artists. Elevate the yacht interior’s decorative style with artwork that enhances the overall mood. And, of course, nothing says ‘luxury’ quite like a giant golden sculpture of yourself!

Sculptures and Artifacts

Art and Decor for Yacht Interiors can make or break a vessel’s ambiance. Sculptures and Artifacts provide a sophisticated and elegant touch. Choosing the right pieces is key to complement the space.

Sculptures and artifacts come in many forms. Wooden carvings, hand-painted ceramics, glass sailfish sculptures, bronze divers – the options are limitless. They also make great conversation starters.

Pro Tip: Ensure the pieces are fastened securely in place – no moving around during bumpy rides! For an extra comfort level, why not try a plush velvet cushion from the yacht interior’s textile and upholstery design section?

Textile and Upholstery Design

Aesthetics are crucial for yacht owners to increase the appeal of their vessels. Textile and Upholstery Design is one way to heighten the atmosphere of their interiors. Fabric selection is key. Pick sturdy, top-notch fabric that matches the décor. Colors should complement the scheme, cabinetry, and furniture in the area. Adding comfort with customized cushions and pillows will tie it all together.

Window treatments such as curtains, blinds, or shutters are also part of the design. It should express the owner’s style while taking into consideration the space available.

To really spruce up the yacht interior, personalize it! Monogrammed linen napkins or hand towels with embroidered initials can make guests feel special and emphasize exclusivity. Keeping your yacht interior in order is like tending to a demanding girlfriend – it takes commitment and lots of moolah!

Maintenance of Yacht Interiors

To ensure that your yacht’s interiors remain in pristine condition, it is essential that you follow the maintenance procedures. In this section on ‘Maintenance of Yacht Interiors with Cleaning and Preventative Measures, Repair and Restoration Techniques’, we will guide you through the upkeep process. We will cover the two sub-sections in detail to provide solutions for cleaning and preventative measures and repairing and restoring your yacht’s interiors.

Cleaning and Preventative Measures

Keep your yacht in top shape with regular cleaning and preventative measures! Wipe down surfaces and store items away to limit damage. Invest in protective covers for upholstery and carpets, and inspect interior components like lighting fixtures, plumbing, and appliances.

Reduce mold and mildew growth with air purifiers or dehumidifiers. Dirt accumulation can be detrimental to health, so take preventative measures to keep it clean and safe. Restore your yacht interior with the right restoration techniques – no magic wand needed!

Repair and Restoration Techniques

The interiors of a yacht play a key role in making the voyage comfortable and memorable. However, when exposed to water and unpredictable weather conditions, wear and tear is unavoidable. To keep the elegance of the yacht’s interior, repair and restoration are necessary.

Follow this 5-step guide for repair and restoration of yacht interiors :

  • Assess the damage and make a list of materials you’ll need.
  • Clean the existing space.
  • Repair any damaged supports, fixtures, or fittings.
  • Restore furniture and other elements with proper color matching, polishing, or finishing to bring back its original appearance.
  • Carry out ongoing maintenance activities, such as regular cleaning, check-ups, and repairs as needed.

To maintain yacht interiors, consider unique details like keeping track of service dates for upholstery cleaning or replacing carpets to ensure they match your yacht’s style.

The National Safety Council found that 50% of boating accidents are caused by poor maintenance . So, regular maintenance is essential for a safe cruise on your yacht.

Whether luxury or practicality is your yacht interior’s goal, maintenance is the key to keeping it in tip-top shape .

Conclusion and Final Thoughts on Yacht Interior Design

Creating a yacht interior is key to a luxurious experience. Every detail matters – from materials to colors. It may seem daunting, but expert help makes it possible to get that dream yacht!

Practicality and aesthetics must go hand-in-hand. Layout and arrangement must work in small spaces and all amenities must be available. Professionals and experienced crews can help take into account safety requirements.

Eco-friendly products are important too. Renewable resources and sustainable options reduce the impact on marine ecosystems. High-quality materials from businesses committed to reducing carbon footprints help preserve our planet.

Pro Tip: Less is more when it comes to yacht interiors. Simple elegance and sophistication create a sophisticated space for everyone to enjoy!

The shipyard that built the ‘titanic’ has filed for bankruptcy.

Giorgio Armani's 236-foot Admiral superyacht is using new interior and exterior design rules developed by Armani, based on his ownership of two other superyachts.

Armani’s first yacht was a 164-foot Codecasa called Mariù —named after his mother—and delivered in 2003. Overseeing the exterior design, Armani chose a charcoal-gray hull and gave the yacht matte, stainless-steel fittings to differentiate it from the flashy white boats dotted in the Mediterranean ports.

Five years later, he went bigger with a second Codecasa, the 213-foot Maìn —named after his mother’s childhood nickname—which was delivered in 2008. He painted the entire exterior a dark shade of green to camouflage his presence at sea. He also focused on the onboard experience by introducing more sunbathing and dining areas to make it “feel like a house.”

Armani also requested the windows run in a continuous line along the boat to give large panoramic views, almost as though the boat had no walls.

For his third yacht, due to deliver in September 2024, Armani has gone bigger still, but has kept the build in Italy at Admiral’s Marina di Carrara facilities . “Armani is synonymous with timeless elegance and sophistication,” said Giovanni Costantino, CEO and founder of The Italian Sea Group, in a statement. “Project Metamorphosis, which combines technology and excellence in design with the distinctive features of Armani, will give us great satisfaction.”

In keeping with his previous builds, Armani mandated a wealth of hidden details to give the yacht an understated beauty, including inconspicuous cap rails, hidden lighting and a lot of glass. The light-filled interior is defined by hand-crafted finishes, earthy-toned linens and loose furniture by Armani/Casa.

“Project Metamorphosis pairs lots of exterior space with amazing interior volume, but most noteworthy is the yacht’s proximity to the sea,” Michel Chryssicopoulos, global managing partner at IYC, which has project managed the entire build, told Robb Report . “The large platform aft can be used as a bathing area for relaxation, but also accommodates large groups for outdoor dining and starlit parties.” The sea-level beach club is where guests will enjoy waterside relaxation. On the main deck aft, there are multiple lounge areas, some covered and others open to the elements. Onboard amenities include a cinema and dedicated games area on the bridge deck, a jacuzzi and firepit on the sun deck and multiple outdoor dining areas. There is a gym, a spa with sauna, steam shower and treatment rooms, and discreet meeting rooms for when Armani is conducting business at sea.

The owner’s deck is a personal sanctuary where Armani can retreat for some quiet time. It enjoys an owner’s suite, dining area, bar and lounge. It leads directly to a counter-current swimming pool for fitness workouts, a sunbathing area and intimate nooks for morning coffee or sundowner cocktails. There are six guest suites on the main deck and accommodations for a crew of 20. “An owner’s deck of this size is rarely found on private superyachts and draws on Armani’s personal experience of owning a vessel,” says Costantino. “It allows for a private escape within a floating oasis—the epitome of the yachting lifestyle.”

Armani presented the interior of Project Metamorphosis alongside his 2023 spring/summer men’s and women’s fashion collections recently at Milan Fashion Week. “The sea and design are two of my greatest passions,” he said. “With this new collaboration, I have extended my idea of furnishing and decor to the nautical world, in which—just as in fashion—aesthetics and functionality come together in a natural and elegant style.”

A Closer Look at Giorgio Armani’s Yacht “Main”

Of all the yachts sailing, perhaps one of the most elegant is Giorgio Armani’s Yacht “Main.” The sleek deep green (bordering on black) vessel is, after all, owned by fashion designer Giorgio Armani. The iconic Main is a study in decadence and grandeur. If you’re going to have a sixty million dollar home on the water and run a fashion empire, it’s vital to adorn it in the most excellent and tasteful decor, which is exactly what Armani did. We can only imagine what it would be like to spend our time out at sea in a ship like Main.

Italian Yachtmaking at its Finest

The outstanding Codecasa went all out in creating this one of a kind ship for Armani. It was conceived and built in their Viareggio, Italy shipyard. They worked closely with Georgio himself who proudly had a hand in designing every aspect of the Main over the course of the thirty-month build. The whole interior is based on the concept of balance and harmony in a minimalist style. It succeeds beautifully, but we’d never expect less from Armani. After all, he is one of the tastemakers of the world, paving the future of beauty. On the outside, even the color of the Main is made to blend in with its surroundings. The dark green was specially chosen to camouflage her at sea. Armani himself has noted that the ocean is rarely the idyllic Carribean blue we think of for pictures, and his ship is at one with her backdrop. The aesthetic is both attractive and highly functional, affording the designer the peace and tranquility he can’t have in daily city life.

While there’s no doubt about Codecasa’s experience and skill at making superyachts, Georgio Armani did have a couple of requests they found slightly challenging. It might not seem like curtains are a big deal in the grand scheme of designing the interior of a yacht, but making windows with louvered blinds that line-up Smoothly to give a perfect panoramic view is harder then it sounds. The second request was harder still. Armani wanted one of the decks to slide outward where the Saloon is located to give a larger space. Naturally, they rose to the challenge. As any millionaire fashion mogul can tell you, sometimes it’s all about the fine details. This is never truer than when you’re creating a minimalist appearance. A space that isn’t visually cluttered draws the eye to its smooth lines, color choices, and pleasing shapes. The decking and wood details are all attractively laid out to give the most space without taking your focus off whatever the host and designer have in mind. It’s truly an ingenious way to work, stage a fashion show, or even have a quiet meal with friends.

Yacht Specifications

As yacht fans, we love to know the details about every superyacht. After a little digging around we found some great stats to peruse, for those who are dreaming of owning a yacht someday and those who simply need some design inspiration for their next superyacht alike.

The Main houses fourteen crew members to keep her running smoothly. In addition to his master suite, there are six stunning cabins for guests, and it can accommodate up to twelve people in luxuriant style. Most of the interior mirrors the green on the outside, paired with pale birch and metal grey ceilings to carry the same essential mood as you go from one end to the other. However, each of the guest cabins has its own singular style with rich fabrics and color story for the discerning guests’ comfort and pleasure. A spiral staircase shows off the classic handsomeness of pale wood and timeless design as well as any part of the pleasing-to-the-eye space. Something about the natural flow of the wood and contrasting walls is especially lovely without even trying.

The Veranda is the perfect place to catch some sun or gather around to watch the sunset. It’s outfitted for both informal and formal dining, and Armani’s own interiors division created all the furniture. Some yacht owners go for gold filigree and intricately patterned artworks along the walls. Armani’s favorite features on the other hand, are the outdoor space and an extraordinary, utterly breathtaking antique Japanese cabinet installed in his quarters. For the fitness conscious, Main has a private indoor gym. Doubtless, after a few lavish meals, the models and celebs he has for guests will want to work up a sweat and keep their perfect figures. No need to worry about overheating though because the whole ship has air conditioning. After a sumptuous meal and a solid workout, the hot tub is a great place to relax and unwind. For those seeking a more cooling dip without the need for scuba gear, the pool is available. What luxury yacht would be complete without a private cinema for viewing the Cannes films the designer is so fond of?

Final Thoughts

We don’t have a yacht, but in our dreams, Armani would be the designer if we did. His impeccable sense of elegant and understated style is relaxing merely to look on. The smooth, perfect lines and simple yet bold color choices are simultaneously exotic and comforting. We could stare at The Main for ages just perusing images of its sophisticated appointments and sumptuously serene bearing. If you could choose any designer to outfit a superyacht for you, who would it be? Leave a comment below and let us know.

Some insist that the true measure of a motor yacht's worth is the dimensions of her flybridge, sundeck, and covered aft-deck. There must be space for owners and their guests to revel in sun, sea, and sky. But there are others equally convinced that a motor yacht must be judged by her interior spaces: How roomy, how magnificently furnished, how well appointed with standard equipment and amenities. Happily, the 39 Motor Yacht satisfies all those requirements. The open bridge seats eight, who can also enter conveniently from the foredeck by the Side Walk.

The 39 Motor Yacht's foredeck and sheltered aft-deck are the perfect adjunct to an interior designed for on-water living and entertaining. Giorgio Armani on board superyacht Main

On board superyacht Maìn with fashion designer Giorgio Armani

Superyacht owner and fashion designer Giorgio Armani wants his clothes to have simplicity, elegance, comfort and function. No wonder, then, that his 65 metre Codecasa yacht  Maìn  follows suit. Peter Howarth reports

Thirteen years ago I interviewed Giorgio Armani during the Cannes International Film Festival. We were there to see the premiere of his friend Martin Scorsese’s film, Gangs of New York , and spent an hour or so talking in the designer’s hotel suite at the Martinez overlooking the Croisette and the Mediterranean beyond. With the job done, we stood on the balcony chatting informally, and I remarked that it was a beautiful view.

“My house in Saint-Tropez has a view like this,” he said. Then he looked out to sea. “That’s a horrible boat.” A big beast of white metal floated in the harbour. Did he have a boat? I asked. “In two years’ time. It’s 150 feet (45.7 metres) long,” he extended his hands, “and brand new. It’s for Pantelleria.”

The small volcanic island of Pantelleria, just off the coast of Sicily (“the winds are African and the climate dry and it is so remote and dominated by the view of the dazzling deep blue sea that you could almost be on a boat,” Armani says) was at that time his favoured holiday home; the boat he was having built was the 49.9 metre motor yacht Mariù , named after his mother.

Armani grew up in the city of Piacenza, near Milan. As a teenager he entertained ideas of becoming a doctor and enrolled in medical school. But he soon realised it was not for him and dropped out to take a job as a window dresser at Milan’s most prestigious department store, la Rinascente. This led to a role as a buyer there, followed by a move into design, where he worked for Nino Cerruti. Then he set up on his own. Forty years later, he hasn’t looked back.

Today, in an industry dominated by big groups and corporations, Armani is remarkable in that he still owns 100 per cent of his company. Its most recent quoted results showed a record financial performance: consolidated revenues of more than €2 billion and operating profit of more than €400 million. Asked for the secret of his success, he replies modestly: “I just try to design clothes that are stylish and avoid the traps of transient trends. I believe the best way to make people look good is to pursue a design vision of simplicity, elegance, comfort and function.”

As with many successful men, a yacht was something he would come to desire. By the time we met in Cannes, the decision to have his own was one the designer was taking after years visiting other people’s. “Sometimes they’d belong to people I knew, sometimes they were just chartered. Invariably they were not my style – too white, too much lighting, too much marble, crystal and mahogany.” As a scrupulously private person, he doesn’t like anything that attracts too much attention. “That’s why I’m not that keen on hotels. That and the décor – actually, big boats are often like hotel suites out at sea. So my own boat seemed to be the perfect solution. I enjoy a degree of isolation – that’s what my home on Pantelleria is all about. However, it’s not just on islands that I like to isolate myself. I isolate myself in worlds that I create from what I love. I remove what I don’t like. You have to organise an atmosphere around yourself.”

As his personal assistant explained to me in 2002, the problem when chartering is that you are never entirely in control of what sort of boat environment you’ll get. In one instance, he revealed, they had turned up to find their rental decked out in upholstery by another fashion designer! To his credit, Armani was much amused. But you can see the problem for an aesthete who has made his name by following a very particular design vision.

So, then came Mariù , launched in 2003 and built by Codecasa , which the designer loved. But, as often happens, after a few years of life on board he had a greater understanding of what he wanted. “I personally oversaw the furnishings on Mariù , and she was my first significant boat after the charters,” he explains. However, he longed to go deeper into this world. “Then came Maìn ,” he explains, “which I designed entirely, from the hull to the interiors, putting in everything I consider important at sea and, at the same time, introducing a concept of the home. And so I designed not only things like the sunbathing and dining areas, but also the parts where people really live, the most private parts.”

Maìn , a 65 metre also built by Codecasa , is Armani’s current home on the water. Delivered in 2008, she is constructed from high tensile steel (hull) and aluminium (superstructure). She has been externally covered with epoxy and painted an unusual dark green (a Dupont top coat). “Painting Maìn green was a choice made to camouflage her,” says Armani. “The sea is rarely what we’d call blue. It’s green or dark blue, or turquoise, where there are shallow bottoms and large boats can’t dock. The green camouflages the boat at sea, so it doesn’t appear too flashy.”

Talk to Armani about design and it soon becomes apparent that elegance and understatement are central to his philosophy. Not appearing flashy, like the boat he pointed out to me years ago off Cannes, has been an objective for both his vessels. The first, Mariù , was charcoal grey and even had all the shiny stainless steel fittings sanded down to render them matt and less glaring.

Maìn takes things a step further. “I wanted Maìn to have a strong and compact appearance, and not be weighted down with dazzling white paint that can be seen from a distance, so people say, ‘Oh, that’s so-and-so’s boat.’” He also minimised the brightness of reflected light internally, too. “I came up with the idea of creating bulkheads from the navigation deck to the flying bridge, with a type of venetian blind – louvres – made of birchwood. They prevent the strong sunlight at sea bouncing off the water from coming in violently, giving the interior a muffled appearance.”

It took 30 months to build Maìn and a great deal of that time was spent interpreting two key design features that Armani specified. The first was that the louvre blinds and the windows they serve should run in a continuous line along the boat. “The overall effect is that Maìn looks as if she has no walls,” says Armani delightedly. “You can see the whole panoramic view from the inside.” The other big challenge he set was his desire to create an innovative sliding bridge-deck saloon floor, which gives more space to the area connecting the upper saloon to below, creating the effect of one expansive living room. “It wasn’t easy work for Codecasa, considering that most of a boat’s technology is concealed in the floor!” Armani says, with a mischievous grin. He visited the yard regularly to supervise the work.

This living area is the heart of the vessel. “It extends over almost all the surface of the main deck and has two separate areas, including the sitting room/fireplace area,” says the designer. “There are two Armani Casa custom-made sofas separated by stools and coffee tables. There is a central table made of birchwood, with soft cushions instead of chairs. The verandah is at the stern, and has a dining area; this is something I had already successfully tried on Mariù .”

Overall, simplicity is the watchword. “I took inspiration from particular military vessels that looked very practical, and from the optimisation of space that is a characteristic of old ships. I wanted function to find a new expression in form. Notably, I set out to rid the decks of all of the superstructures you normally find on them that might break up the purity of line, such as tenders and other technical parts.” The tenders are hidden in a garage at the stern, which sits underneath a teak staircase that reaches right down to the water.

However, though Maìn is restrained, she is still a luxury enterprise. The profile is provided with side bulwarks made of reinforced stratified crystal glass at their tops, so as to deliver better visibility of the sea. Inside, natural birchwood dominates on floors, venetian blinds, indoor stairs and bulkheads all over the boat. A fireplace is in the main deck saloon (electric, of course, respecting security laws at sea) and the galley is decorated with satined retro-lacquered glass. All ceilings are lacquered in metal grey and the remaining areas are lacquered dark green to echo the exterior. The bathrooms are enriched with marble. The venetian louvre blind device features in the cabins as a wardrobe decoration, but here they are covered with fabric matching the colour scheme of each cabin. Most of the furniture is by Armani’s Armani Casa interiors division, though much of it has been custom-made by the Armani Casa specialist Interior Design Studio under the designer’s eagle-eyed supervision. The boat has a cinema, spa pool, substantial sundeck, indoor gym and six large cabins for guests.

“I worked very closely with my interior design team, as I do on all my homes,” says Armani, who as well as his holiday retreat on Pantelleria, also has boltholes in Saint-Tropez, St Moritz, Antigua, one of the Croatian Brioni islands, and one on the Italian coast. “I had a specific idea, a desire that may seem rather strange,” he confesses. “I wanted my second boat to feel like a house and so I designed it on the basis of certain principles and intuitions, which have given rise to a model that is completely different from my first boat. I went for comfort, arranging spaces to give plenty of visual freedom; you never feel as if you are closed-in in a box with low ceilings.”

Being on board, he says, is all about forgetting work and “recharging”, so he can go back to Milan full of energy and creativity. The experience of owning a superyacht gives him “the greatest pleasure”, he says, and he talks of his love of the serenity of being on board, and how he enjoys experiencing the “rhythms of the sea, which are at one with our most profound inner nature”. He doesn’t usually host big parties on Maìn , but prefers to invite small groups of close friends to travel with him on his “private refuge”.

He does spend time with the crew on deck and manages his stops with the captain, but there are prescribed and ordered routines. “I like the rhythm of cruising, with the crew moving around regularly in a certain way,” he explains. “It’s a rhythm of work that follows the passage of the day and this gives me a sense of continuity. I like certainty. I don’t like surprises. All I ask of my guests is that they make themselves at home, but show respect for the operation of the vessel.”

His favourite parts of the yacht are “the living area, with the verandah at the stern, and my cabin, which has panelling made of precious materials and an antique Japanese cabinet”. His chosen cruising ground is the Med, where he particularly likes to explore solitary beaches. “We Italians live on Mediterranean shores. It’s a sea that allows you to go to uncontaminated places such as the Aeolian Islands or Pantelleria. I would really like to visit many places – sail along the coast of Africa, or around the islands of the Azores, for example – but my holidays are never long enough.” He spends less time on Maìn than he would like, he confesses, because he has so much work to do.

“I have always loved the water,” Armani says, “ever since I was four or five years old and was taken to beach resorts. I still remember the feeling of the smooth, cool sand under my feet and how it filled me with joy as evening came. I have loved the sea ever since, and I still love and respect it greatly.” Interestingly, in the advertising campaigns for his fragrances, there is often imagery of powerful waves and fresh surf.

“I was born into a family that would have been passionate about sailing if we had been able to afford it, and I would have loved to sail. As kids we only had a pedal boat, and later on an inflatable one. So when I was able, I thought it would be nice to experience the sea more comfortably and try charters. Even though it involved incredible boats, there was always something that didn’t really convince me about it. As soon as I could, I bought Mariù , which I decorated; later on came Maìn .”

Mariù was his mother’s nickname. What about Maìn ? “It was actually my mother’s affectionate nickname when she was little, while Mariù – also in the dialect of Piacenza – was her nickname as a young woman,” he explains. “I like to remind myself of where I come from – a simple family, from the petite bourgeoisie, where our greatest luxury was owning a Lambretta and cars did not become within our reach until much later. Recalling my mother’s girlish nicknames means not detaching myself from the world that I loved.”

But the reference to mamma Armani is not just about roots. “I have always believed in elegance. I get that from my mother,” he says. “My mother was very elegant. She had great force and a refined sensibility. She taught me that if you wish to create beauty, only do what is necessary and no more. It is a lesson I have never forgotten. And it is the approach I use when creating both fashion and interiors.

“In my cabin on Maìn , on the desk, there is a picture of her with me when I was about six on the beach at Rimini. She looks beautiful in her black skirt and one-piece bathing suit. That’s how I remember her.”
