Zakynthos is an Ionian Island in Greece with wild landscapes, unspoilt coastlines and wonderful cosmopolitan towns. Enjoy the idyllic beauty of Greece both on board your superyacht and when you go ashore on a Zakynthos private yacht charter holiday. With its long sandy beaches, gorgeous countryside, the famous Shipwreck Beach along with stunning architecture, Zakynthos has everything and more you could possibly wish for. Go here for the full Greece yacht charter guide .

If your yacht charter party is torn between an itinerary filled with cultural sites and exhibitions or a beach-side holiday having fun using all the water toys, Zakynthos is the perfect location to satisfy everyone's desires: Turtles swim in turquoise waters and nest on the beaches, and snorkellers and scuba divers can get up close to eagle rays, octopus, scorpionfish, reef sharks and lobster. Zakynthos has arguably the most famous beached wreck in all of the Mediterranean at Navagio Beach, and once the tourists have vanished for the evening you can have this setting all to yourself.

In town, the Giatras Museum-Dionysios Art Gallery is a gem of a find, providing the local history in a three-hundred year old building that still has the old olive press. The gold-gilded Virgin Mary Faneromeni Church is a breath-taking labour of love, while picturesque Anafonitria Monastery has a garden just as beautiful as its interior where guests can rest.

As mentioned, the island is a great place for snorkelling, diving, shopping, dining and awesome nightlife. It’s known as Zante, Zacinto or Zakinthos and is the southernmost island in this zone. The north-western part of the island has barren mountain peaks while the centre of the island is verdant with blossoms that gave it the name Flower of the East or “Fioro di Levante”. When the Venetians ruled Zakynthos, they created the charming architecture of the Byzantine buildings, museums and traditional piazzas like the one in Solomos Square.

Greece

In the south of the island there’s a Mediterranean party atmosphere, luxury resorts and beautiful beaches of white sand. From Easter until the end of October this hot spot is a favourite with visitors as well as superyachts. You can still find a quiet spot on the beach or in a secluded cove. The Vasilikos peninsula has some gorgeous countryside, seaside towns and beaches while the city of Yerakas, only accessible by water, is also very popular luxury yacht charter spot.

While in Zakynthos do visit the Shipwreck Cove or Navagio Beach. The ice-white sand on this beach is surrounded by limestone cliffs and azure blue waters. It’s a good idea to anchor your crwed luxury yacht here in the morning or late in the afternoon as it does get rather busy with other visitors.

The protected area of Laganas Bay on the island is a breeding site for the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtles. You might see a hatchling taking its first steps into the sea however, stand at a good distance just in case you frighten them.

The third largest island in the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos Island (Zante) was known by the Venetians as the 'Flower of the East' thanks to its lush greenery that makes the Ionian island so fertile and beautiful. Today, it is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Greece thanks in part to the international airport that has links right across Europe but mostly due to its sheer beauty.

Though many tourists won't get much further than its beautiful beaches and renowned nightlife in Zakynthos Town, this jewel of an island has so much more to offer. Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), accessed from Porto Vromi beach by water taxi, is a sandy beach only accessible by sea and would be quite beautiful in its own right even without the wrecked cigarette smuggler's ship that lies in the middle.

Close to the main marina on Zante, Agios Nikolaos Beach is one of the best on the island with its range of water sports available, or just to chill out in the turquoise waters. Elsewhere on Zakynthos you will find protected Caretta Caretta sea turtles and a species of seal that only lives in the Ionian Sea. Diving and snorkelling is an absolute must as there is at least as much to take in under the water as there is above!

Explore Zakynthos By Renting A Yacht

So, on your bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter out of Zakynthos, where else would you like to go? On nearby mainland Greece, the historic town of Preveza has over 60km of beaches around the Ambracian Gulf, and ancient ruins dating back millennia too.

The other major Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Lefkada are worthy of long pauses too. Cephalonia was the setting for the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin thanks to its stunning scenery and beautiful fishing villages. Sandy beaches and a large cave system make this, the largest of the Ionian Islands, a destination you shouldn't miss on a Zakynthos yacht charter.

Between Cephalonia and mainland Greece lies Lefkada. Connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge, this is a fun filled tourist island with excellent facilities, whether you moor at Nydri or the largest marina on the Ionian, Lefkada Town Marina.

As well as the larger islands, the smaller islands of the Ionian are always worth a pause too. Often away from the main tourist track, islands such as Kastos, Meganisi and Arkoudi aren't a long sail from the main island, but will give you an authentic taste of Greek island life. On a longer run north you can hit Paxos and Antipaxos, both only accessible by sea and the latter largely a large olive grove.

A Zakynthos yacht charter will give you the opportunity to explore these islands over a week or two at your own pace, enjoying the placid and great sailing conditions of the Ionian Sea as you do.

How To Get To Zakynthos

Zakynthos Airport

During the summer season (May to October) there are flights to the airport on Zante from right across Europe and the UK. This is around a 50 minute shuttle ride from the main yacht charter hub at Agios Nikolaos.

Marinas In Zakynthos

There are two main marinas on Zante island.

Agios Nikolaos Marina:

On the northern end of Zakynthos Island, Agios Nikolaos Marina a mid sized marina. It is a yacht charter base with charter companies based here offering bareboat and skippered yacht charter of luxury yacht charter , catamaran charter , motorboat charter and monohull sailing yacht for a day charter or longer. Crewed superyacht charters are also available.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 51m (167 Feet)

Max Draught 3m (10 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, WiFi, toilets, bar, restaurant, supermarket

Port Zakynthos:

In Zakynthos Town, Port Zakynthos has space for 30 large yachts. It has yacht charter companies offering offering bareboat and skippered yacht charter of luxury yacht, catamaran charter, motor yacht and monohull sailing yacht for a day charter or longer.

Max Length 60m (199 Feet)

Max Draught 8m (26 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, WiFi, fuel, waste water collection, toilets, showers, bar, restaurant, ATM, rent-a-car, supermarket

Suggested Sailing Itinerary From Zante

On your Zakynthos charter yacht, whether bareboat or with a skipper you can access many of the islands of the IonianSea as well as larger ones like Kefalonia and Lefkada.

7 days - Paxos,Cephalonia and Lefkada: Heading north for your shakedown cruise, head for Lixouri on the Paliki Peninsula of Cephalonia. From here, south, then north around the top of the island to Vasiliki on Lefkada, and then the next day head north again to Gaios on Paxos. South to Lefkada, berthing in Nydri Marina to feel the vibe of this idiosyncratic tourist town, before going to the hideaway port of Vathy on Ithaca. Zakynthos Town will be your chance to party for the final time before returning to Agios Nikolaos Marina.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Zakynthos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Unlike the Aegean, the Ionian Sea is dominated by the Bora - the same wind that affects nearby Croatia. In summer this is far more benign and far more sailing friendly than the often beefy Meltemi. Building to a fun F5-6 in the afternoon from a zephyr in the morning, you can almost time your daily sailing by it.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Ionian boat rental.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. With the wetter climate than the Aegean this is less of a problem so with the warm seas could be at least as good as the earlier months of the year.

Sailing Weather In Zakynthos

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes cooler northerly winds, though the southerly Bora kicks in in around early May. There is more rainfall here than on Aegean Greece but you will soon find that a blessed relief from the heat!

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40 - often hotter than the Aegean. The Bora often adds to the heat with its tropical origins.

September-October: The seas remain warm, as does the air. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s though can touch 30C from time to time.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas on Zakynthos?

The main marina on Zakynthos is at Agios Nikolaos on the NE coast of the island. Taking 255 yachts, this is far bigger than the Port of Zakynthos in Zakynthos Town that only takes 30 vessels.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Zakynthos?

To avoid the summer heat and crowds, if you can get to Lefkas Island after autumn school term begins you will find the seas still warm, the air more comfortable and the marinas less crowded.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Zante?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Zakynthos?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

zakynthos superyacht marina

Zakynthos (Greek: Ζάκυνθος), the third largest of the Ionian Islands, covers an area of 410 km2 (158 sqmi) and its coastline has roughly 123 km length (76 mi). The island is named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin.

Zakynthos with its thriving tourism industry, can offer amazing sailing moments, and in order to capture them you will need the best yachts that can take you there… ours.

Sailing Holidays in Zakynthos

Zakynthos (Italian: Zante), besides Kythira, the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands, lies off the west coast of the Peloponnese. The western half of the island is occupied by a karstic plateau rising to 758 m, and the eastern half is occupied by a fertile and intensively cultivated alluvial plain with a luxuriant growth of vegetation. With its beautiful scenery and excellent bathing beaches making it the perfect setting for sailing, Zakynthos is very popular among yacht charterers and tourists in general. The big harbor of Zakynthos has a marina on the side of the jetty, where you can find any supply you might need for yourselves or your yacht. Sailing around the island, you will find many beaches to inspect, including the world-famous Navagio beach (Shipwreck Bay), a good anchorage with sandy bottom. The equally renowned Blue Caves are only accessible by boat, and in order to visit them, you should anchor in Agios Nikolaos bay and go there with your tender, tying to a small quay. In this area there are chilly underwater springs, ideal to dive in and explore the seabed. As you sail, watch out for the rare loggerhead turtles, “ Caretta caretta” , heading mainly towards the southern beaches of Zakynthos, Laganas in particular, to lay their eggs.

History of Zakynthos

Since the time of Homer, the island has been known by the name it still bears, said to derived from the wild hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis L.). Achaeans and Arcadians settled there since then, and soon developed the island into a center of trade and seafaring, whose influence extended as far as the Iberian Peninsula, when they founded the colony of Zakantha, later known as Saguntum.

Zakynthos was occupied by the Turks in 1479, but recovered two years later by the Venetians, who held it until 1797. The island has preserved an Italian and Venetian stamp, yet its eventful history and the major earthquakes of 1515 and 1953 destroyed most old buildings. Adding to these earthquakes, in 2018 there was a cliff collapse in the beach of Navagio (Shipwreck beach).

Ports and Local Amenities

The port of Zakynthos provides good shelter from the prevailing north-west winds, though, with a strong southerly, it is better to anchor in the south-west.

You should be careful in order to avoid the little reef (marked by a red buoy) just east of the entrance of the harbour. You should also note that there are few unlit mooring buoys towards the south-east of the harbour. The proposed marina is still not finished.

The Vromi bay is a deep inlet and the only anchorage on the west side of the island. In north-west or west winds, it provides good shelter, but you should still be aware of katabatic gusts.

Above the town, there are the remains of a Venetian Castle, which is believed to have collapsed in the 1515 earthquake.

The most beautiful beach of Zakynthos, one of the five or six most photographed beaches of all Greece, is called Navagio (Shipwreck beach), and is accessible only by sea, giving you the idea of hugeness and perfection. However you should be careful while getting closer, or attempting to anchor there, since there was a cliff colapse in September of 2018.

You can use your own boat and sail towards the Blue Caves. They consist of particular geologic formations giving life to a succession of caves along the North-West coast of the island, starting soon after Agios Nikolaos to end near Skinari Cape.

Explore historical Zakynthos

The Venetian Tower is a remnant of the Venetian rule over the island in 1484, who also called Zakynthos the Flower of the East . During this time they tried to repopulate Zakynthos as many inhabitants had fled the island. Later, even Italians escaping the civil wars, that were occuring in Italy at the time, settled here.

Beautiful monasteries like Anafonitria monastery or Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa show the deep rooted Christian history on the island.

Explore mystical Zakynthos

According to Homer, the island of Zakynthos received its name from its founder with the same name. He was the son of the king of Troy and came to the island with his fleet, where he founded his very own Acropolis. As Greeks take their mythology very seriously, there are plenty of coins and other artifacts showing the founder of the island. It is even said that Zakynthos was the one who freed the island from snakes.

Sailing conditions in Zakynthos

Despite the obvious beauty that you can find in Zakynthos, it is the perfect sailing destination for anyone who wants to go out and explore. The winds and waves are generally not as strong as in other parts of the Greek islands. This also makes it a perfect destination for novice sailors. Some bays might be deeper than you expect, so bringing a longer anchor line is advisable. You can even explore different kinds of landscapes on the island. The west coast is karstic and therefore many caves and other kinds of fascinating rocky landscapes can be found here. On the contrary, the eastern part of the island is fertile and green.

The summers are very hot and dry with the months of July and August being the most popular months to visit the island. The winters will get colder and windier. Strong South-South-East winds are dominating here in winter and early spring.

Keep an eye out for the National Marine Park of Zakynthos , where wildlife is protected.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Zakynthos?

Renting a boat in Zakynthos won’t break your bank. In fact, Zakynthos and Greece in general are amongst the most affordable destinations for a boat vacation in the Mediterranean. Prices can definitely fluctuate between high season and shoulder season, but that shouldn’t stop you from booking your amazing sailing trip in Zakynthos .

Charter a sailboat in Greece at an average price of 50 EUR per person per day. Sailboats are the cheapest boats you can charter in Greece and the fact that they solely run on wind means that you don’t need to calculate any additional costs for fuel. The most expensive option for a boat holiday in Greece is a motorboat charter which comes at an average price of 190 EUR per person per night. Be aware that this doesn’t include the extra costs for fuel you have to keep in mind in addition to your bareboat charter. Rent a catamaran in Greece for an average price of 150 EUR per person per day. If you are a more experienced sailor and want to rent something adventurous, but still affordable, you should rent a gulet in Greece at an average price of 105 EUR per person per day. It costs 93 EUR per person per day on average to rent a RIB. However, bear in mind that RIBs are only suitable as day charters, not for overnight stays.

A skippered yacht charter in Zakynthos is a great choice if you just want to relax and not move a finger when enjoying a boat holiday on the Ionian islands.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Zakynthos?

Zakynthos has many beautiful beaches to choose from, but not every boat type is a good choice to explore them with. You would charter a different type of boat for an activity like that than the one you would go for if you want to go island hopping around the Ionian islands.

Rent a catamaran in Zakynthos

Pros of renting a catamaran in Zakynthos

Charter a catamaran in Zakynthos if you’re ready for a super relaxing beach holiday. Sail from beach to beach without a care in the world. Catamarans are perfect for this type of holiday as they have a shallow draft and no keel. This makes them your ideal partner for sailing in shallow waters and super close to all the fabulous beaches you would like to explore on your sailing vacation in Zakynthos .

A catamaran rental in Zakynthos gives you all the flexibility you would hope for. Equipped with a sail as well as an engine catamarans are the real stars amongst the many different types of boats. You can set your sail and sail with the winds if they allow to do so or use the engine if they don’t. Either way, you will never get stuck in the middle of the sea, because you have no way of moving forward should the wind suddenly stop blowing.

Rent a catamaran in Zakynthos if you are more of a comfortable type. Catamarans are generally more spacious and more comfortable than other types of boats. Standing on two hulls gives them more room to expand the bedrooms as well as other cabins on board the boat. You will feel like sleeping in a hotel room rather than a boat. Additionally, the two hulls give catamarans more stability than other types of boats. Even if the wind picks up, a catamaran will stay strong and you won’t feel the wind rocking the boat as much. You might hear the water hitting underneath the boat where the two hulls are connected, but it is a minor annoyance considering the benefits you gain from sailing on a catamaran in Zakynthos .

Cons of renting a catamaran in Zakynthos

Of course it is great to have all this extra space available on board a catamaran, but it might also come with disadvantages in the long run as it might be harder to find a spot for mooring in the marinas - and if you do, you probably have to pay extra for all the extra space you’re hogging. If that’s the case, you might be better off finding a nice and quiet bay for anchoring for the night. Isn’t it more beautiful to wake up watching the sunrise in nature anyway?

Charter a catamaran in Zakynthos town

Rent a sailboat in Zakynthos

Pros of renting a sailboat in Zakynthos

Rent a sailboat in Zakynthos if you care about the environment and want to experience a sustainable boat holiday in Greece. As sailboats run on wind, you don’t need to worry about getting your tank filled up every time you leave the marina and you can rest assured that you won’t create any extra emissions. As the wind conditions on the Ionian islands are great for sailing, you will enjoy your holiday on a sailboat very much.

Charter a sailboat in Zakynthos if you want to save a bit of money. Sailboats are generally one of the cheapest boats you can charter on a boat holiday in Greece, but the fact that they are only running on wind and technically don’t need any fuel, makes them even more affordable.

Another advantage of a sailboat charter in Zakynthos is the fact that sailboats don’t need to stop by any marinas to refuel. This makes them perfect for sailing longer distances. You can certainly discover islands that are further away without worrying about fuel or simply stay away from the touristy spots while anchoring in secluded bays for the night instead.

For the romantics amongst us, renting a sailboat in Zakynthos means that no engine noises are going to ruin the peace and serenity you get to experience on a sailboat. Simply take in the views, feel the wind on your skin and forget your everyday worries for a week.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Zakynthos

One of the downsides of a sailboat rental in Zakynthos can be the fact that sailboats solely run on wind. Sure, there might be a smaller engine which is generally used for mooring when the wind conditions aren’t right or for emergency situations at sea, but they are not made for longer distances. This means that you might get stuck in the middle of the sea, should the wind suddenly stop blowing. If you only have a week to discover the Ionian islands by sailboat, it might cause some frustration.

Another disadvantage of a sailboat hire in Zakynthos might be the lack of space on deck. As all the necessary equipment needs to be stored somewhere on deck, it might become quite cluttered and less comfortable. Sailboats are definitely not the type of boats you rent if you just want to experience a relaxing boat vacation in Zakynthos, sunbathing by the beach and swimming in the turquoise water.

Sailboat rental in Zakynthos

Rent a motorboat in Zakynthos

Pros of renting a motorboat in Zakynthos

Rent a motorboat in Zakynthos if you want to discover as many secluded, but beautiful beaches as possible. The shallow draft allows you to drive closer to the shore, meaning that you get easy access to the most stunning beaches the island has to offer.

Anyone who loves speed is well advised to charter a motorboat in Zakynthos . They are generally faster than other types of boats and often narrower. This also makes motorboats easier to navigate. Hopping from beach to beach or island to island will be a real treat - especially if your time is limited and you want to explore as much as possible.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Zakynthos

One of the downsides of renting a motorboat in Zakynthos is the fact that motorboats only run on fuel. Fuel is expensive, making motorboats one of the most expensive options when it comes to boat holidays on the Ionian islands.

Motorboat rental in Zakynthos

Charter a luxury yacht in Zakynthos

It is no secret that the rich and famous regularly vacation on the most luxurious superyachts in the Mediterranean in popular destinations like Mykonos or Ibiza, but there are many luxury yachts in Zakynthos just waiting to be chartered. If you have the necessary funds available, you shouldn’t hesitate and book your dream yacht vacation on the Ionian islands today. Generally speaking, a luxury yacht will be equipped with basics like a fridge, freezer, stove, coffee maker and kettle and extras like SUPs, snorkelling equipment and wifi for extra fun.

What kind of boat licence do you need when renting a boat in Zakynthos?

Anyone who wants to charter a boat in Zakynthos , needs to be in possession of a valid boat licence - unless you want to rent a motorboat with less than 30hp. These boats don’t require you to carry a boat licence. If you do have a boat licence and it has been issued in a language other than English or Greek, make sure you get it translated into Greek or English before coming here. It is mandated by the Greek authorities and will save you a lot of headaches as they take their rules and regulations very seriously.

If you are neither in possession of a valid boat licence, nor want to obtain one in the next while, be sure to hire a skipper in addition to your bareboat charter. It will be great to have someone on board taking care of all the work while you get to enjoy your sailing vacation in Zakynthos .

Zakynthos Yacht Charters

Explore zakynthos on your luxury yacht charter in greece.

Called the “flower of the East,” Zakynthos is straight out of a fairytale; offering a varied landscape of verdant valleys, sandy shores, jagged mountains, hidden coves, and more than 7,000 species of flowers sprawling throughout.

With this inherent adoration of nature comes a respect for the creatures that wander its lands; and Zakynthos is careful to protect its two most endangered animal species: the caretta sea turtle and the monachus seal.

Named after the first believed inhabitant of the island – the son of Dardanos, an ancient ruler of Frigia – Zakynthos is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea. Ruled by the Venetians from 1484 to 1797, remnants of their influence can still be seen in the island’s architectural footprint, including a unique, Venetian-built fort. While much of the original buildings were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake and the fires that ensued, today, the town has been rebuilt. Architects were careful to retain much of the same aesthetic as the original buildings. Thus, visiting Zakynthos is not too different from turning back a page of Greek history; making this island a true Venetian gem amongst a sea of Grecian treasures.

Plan your private Greece yacht charter adventure through the Ionian Sea today, and time travel through ancient history on the island of Zakynthos.

Zakynthos Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Zakynthos yacht charters

Solomos Square : Housing a sculpture of D. Solomos, the national poet of Greece, as the main focal point, Solomos Square is surrounded by architectural gems, arch-shaped windows, and beautiful, elongated arcades. The site of Zákynthos’ Public Library and the Post-Byzantine Museum of Zante, two key haunts on the island, Solomos Square boasts a vibrant culture and bustling streets; fitting, given that it is named after the man who wrote the Greek National Hymn.

Strata Marina : One of the most-visited parts of the island, Strata Marina is the portion of K. Lomvardou Street that is lined with colorful cafes, popular bars and delicious, local restaurants – and all along the border of the Ionian Sea. Stretching from Solomos Square to the church of the patron-saint Aghios Dionysios, Strata Marina is the perfect place to shop, dine or drink amidst stunning horizon views.

Navagio Beach : Located on the southern part of the island, Navagio Beach’s white pebble seafloor, surrounding limestone cliffs, and secluded entrance, accessible only by boat, give it an air of exclusivity. Named after the shipwreck of Panagiotis in the 1980s – believed to be a smugglers’ ship, the remnants of which are still there today – this quiet haven is often referred to as “ Smugglers Cove.”

Stranis Hill : Thought to be the place that inspired Dionysios Solomos to write the “Hymn to Liberty,” which later became the Greek National Hymn, Stranis Hill was the property of Ludwig Stranis, a close friend of the poet, in the early 1800s. Today, it is regarded for its beautiful views: the verdant plains of Zákynthos’, Kefalonia, the Ionian Sea, and in the distance, Greece’s mainland.

Yacht with fireworks, ammunition on board damaged after catching fire in Marina del Rey

By Dean Fioresi

Updated on: September 18, 2024 / 10:29 PM PDT / KCAL News

A large yacht carrying rounds of ammunition and fireworks caught fire in Marina del Rey on Wednesday.

At around 8:30 p.m., firefighters rushed to the docks at Basin A, where the boat was heavily involved in flames, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Two hours later, the boat quickly sank below the water line.

Crews say that two people were on board the boat when the fire ignited, but both were able to get off safely.

With SkyCal overhead, large flames could be seen inside of the boat despite a heavy barrage of water being sprayed by crews.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters say that they have reason to believe that there was actually about a thousand rounds of ammunition on board as well as fireworks. They said that once they are able to board they will confirm.

Some video from bystanders showed dozens of fireworks shooting off the deck of the boat and bursting overhead, all while firefighters worked to contain the volatile flames.

It's unclear if the people on the boat, a 100-foot yacht called "The Admiral," were the owners.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.

Fire damages interior of large yacht docked at Marina del Rey

KABC logo

MARINA DEL REY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A high-end yacht docked at Marina del Rey caught on fire Wednesday night, leaving the interior gutted by flames.

Firefighters responded and were pouring water on the 100-foot vessel from the dock.

But the interior flames appeared to resist the water hoses and the boat continued sustaining damage. It appeared to be listing to the side.

Witness video captured the sounds of several explosions as firefighters were battling the flames.

The fire in Basin A was first reported around 8:30 p.m.

There were no major injuries reported. Two people on board exited safely, though one reported a minor cut to the arm.

There was no word on how the fire started.

The boat is named The Admiral, but the identity of the owner was not immediately available.

History of Voronezh

Foundation of voronezh.

The first mention of Voronezh dates back to 1177 in connection with the battle of the Vladimir and Ryazan princes and the escape of Yaropolk of Ryazan to “Voronozh”. Some historians suggest, based on fragments of these chronicles, that Voronezh (Voronozh) existed as a settlement back in the 12th century. Other historians believe that the chronicle meant only the Voronezh River.

The second, very significant, mention of Voronezh in the chronicles refers to 1237, when the conquest of the Russian principalities by Khan Batu began during the Western campaign of the Mongols. The Russian princes decided to give the first battle to the enemies “and came out against them in Voronozh”, but were defeated. Again, the word “Voronozh” probably means the Voronezh River, not a settlement.

The Tsar’s decree on the foundation of Voronezh has not yet been found. The archive has an order of the boyar Nikita Yuriev from 1586 on the reorganization of the guard service on the southern outskirts of the Moscow state and on the construction of two fortified settlements: Livny and Voronezh. Thus, the official year of the foundation of Voronezh is 1586.

Located on the trade route at the confluence of the Voronezh River with the Don, Voronezh could not remain an exclusively military town for a long time. In 1615, its population was about 7 thousand people. From the middle of the 17th century, Russian and foreign ambassadors to the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Caucasus travelled through Voronezh. It became part of the Belgorod line - fortifications that protected the Russian state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars until the end of the 17th century.

More Historical Facts…

Voronezh - the cradle of the Russian navy

In 1695, during the first Azov campaign, Russian troops were unable to capture the fortress of Azov standing on the bank of the Don River, several kilometers from its confluence with the Sea of Azov. The siege was unsuccessful, as the Ottoman garrison in the fortress received support from the sea.

Therefore, Peter I decided to start building a fleet. Voronezh was chosen for this because of its strategic position on the Voronezh River flowing into the Don. Secondly, there were forests near the town that could be used as building materials. Thirdly, the residents of Voronezh had experience in the construction and use of river vessels.

In 1696, as a result of the second campaign, the Azov fortress was taken by Russian troops. The Russian fleet prevented the supply of people, ammunition and food to the fortress. From 1696 to 1711, about 215 ships were built in Voronezh, including the ship “Goto Predestinatsia” (The Providence of God) - the first Russian ship of the line.

In Voronezh, the organizational foundations for the subsequent construction of the Russian fleets in the Baltic and Black Seas were laid. The first Admiralty in Russia was also created here. However, the military shipyard in Voronezh did not exist for long due to the gradual shallowing of the rivers.

Voronezh in the 18th-19th centuries

In 1709, Voronezh became part of the Azov Governorate. In 1711, its center moved from Azov to Tambov, and in 1715 - to Voronezh. In 1725, after the death of the first Russian emperor, the region was renamed into the Voronezh Governorate. In 1745, the first educational institution was opened - the theological seminary (closed in 1918, reopened in 1993).

In 1748, Voronezh was badly damaged by fire. Almost the entire center, which was located on the bank of the river, burned down. After that, the center of Voronezh again began to be located in the place of today’s Universitetskaya Square.

In 1774, after another big fire, Catherine II approved the general plan for the regular development of Voronezh. In the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, Voronezh was one of the centers of the Russian cloth industry.

In 1781, the coat of arms of Voronezh was approved: “The shield is divided in two, in the upper part in a golden field - a two-headed black eagle, and in the lower part in a red field - an overturned jar, from which the Voronezh River flows”.

In 1863, according to the census of residents, Voronezh numbered 38,672 people (the 12th largest city in the Russian Empire). The first public library was opened in 1864. In 1868, Voronezh was connected by railway with Moscow, in 1871 - with Rostov-on-Don, in 1894 - with Kursk.

Voronezh in the first half of the 20th century

In 1913, the first secular higher educational institution in Voronezh was opened - the Agricultural Institute named after Peter the Great (Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter I). In 1914, the population of the city was 93,700 people. During the First World War, reserve military units were formed in Voronezh, defense enterprises from the western regions of the Russian Empire were evacuated here.

In 1928, Voronezh became the center of the Central Black Earth Oblast. And after its liquidation in 1934, it remained the center of Voronezh Oblast. On August 2, 1930, the first Soviet airborne assault was parachuted two kilometers from Voronezh. Today, August 2 is celebrated as the birthday of the Russian airborne forces.

In 1932, two large factories were built on the left bank - aviation and rubber. One of the most important industrial and scientific complexes in the USSR was formed in the city. Many types of aircraft produced in Voronezh began to enter the Red Air Force several years before the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, the population of Voronezh was 326,932 people.

In October-November 1941, during the Second World War, most of the large enterprises were evacuated to the east. From July 7, 1942 to January 25, 1943, the right-bank part of Voronezh, being under German occupation, suffered significant damage, about 18 thousand houses were destroyed (92% of all residential buildings). The active defense of Voronezh helped the Red Army to withstand and win in Stalingrad.

In November 1945, it was decided to prioritize the restoration of 15 oldest Russian cities, including Voronezh. In the late 1940s, the restoration of industrial enterprises was completed, by the mid-1950s - residential and public buildings. In 1956, the population of the city exceeded 400 thousand people.

Voronezh in the second half of the 20th century

In 1968, the first serial Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was produced at the Voronezh Aviation Plant; in October 1977 - the first Soviet airbus (wide-body aircraft) Il-86. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was built, which became the largest in the region.

In 1983, about 6 km from the city limits, the construction of the Voronezh nuclear power plant for heat supply began. In 1990, under the influence of the Chernobyl disaster, it was suspended on the basis of a referendum held among Voronezh residents. The station, which was approximately 65% completed, was mothballed. In 2020, work began on its dismantling. In 1989, the population of Voronezh was about 887,000.

In the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the USSR, the largest industrial enterprises of Voronezh were on the verge of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in defense orders and the breakdown of existing economic ties. A lot of churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church; their restoration was carried out.

In the early and mid-1990s, agreements on twinning relations were concluded between Voronezh and the cities of Charlotte (USA), Chongqing (China) and Sliven (Bulgaria).

In 2008, Voronezh was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In 2009, a new Cathedral of the Annunciation, the third largest Orthodox church in Russia, was built to replace the destroyed one. On December 17, 2012, a millionth resident was born in the city, which made Voronezh the 15th city in Russia with a population of over 1 million.

Voronezh - Features

Initially, the city stood on the banks of the Voronezh River. In the 1970s, it was turned into a reservoir - one of the largest reservoirs in the world located entirely within the city. The Voronezh reservoir divides the city into two parts. Its center, cultural institutions, embankments, the best establishments, and the most prestigious districts are located on the right bank. On the left bank there are industrial enterprises, residential areas, and one beautiful park. The two banks are connected by three bridges: the longest of them is Severnyy Bridge (2 km long).

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voronezh River after which the city of Voronezh was named. Most likely it comes from the word “voron” (“raven”) or “voronoy” (black) reflecting the dark color of the water in the Voronezh River. The City Day of Voronezh is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

Voronezh is located in a temperate zone. Winter is moderately frosty with a permanent snow cover that forms in December. Quite often there are thaws accompanied by rains (especially in December). Also there are often drops in temperature below minus 20 degrees Celsius, which can last up to a week or more.

Summer is warm, even hot (especially July and the first half of August), in some years - rainy, in some years - dry. Autumn is mild and rainy. The Voronezh reservoir is covered with ice in late November - early December. Spring ice drift lasts from March to April. The average temperature in January is minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.7 degrees Celsius.

Voronezh is the economic center of the Voronezh region and one of the largest economic centers in Russia. The leading sectors of the economy are food, chemical, radio-electronic industries, mechanical engineering and retail trade. The largest enterprises of Voronezh are Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Building Company, Voronezh Mechanical Plant, Voronezh Ceramic Plant, Carriage Repair Plant named after V.I. Thalmann.

This city is a major transport hub, the transport system of which consists of air, rail and road transport systems. The Peter the Great Voronezh International Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don. Public transport is represented by mini-buses, buses and trolleybuses.

Voronezh is worth visiting not only for its interesting museums, beautiful parks and picturesque squares. Here you can also see funny monuments to animals - heroes of famous literary works, replicas of the first ships of the Russian navy, unusual buildings in the Art Nouveau and Gothic style of the late 19th-20th centuries.

There are a lot of traditional Russian churches, theaters, and former merchant mansions in Voronezh that catch the eye with their noble and elegant appearance. Also, tourists should pay attention to the monuments perpetuating the image of the heroes of the Second World War. The Voronezh Sea, a huge reservoir stretching for tens of kilometers, is of no less interest.

Main Attractions of Voronezh

The monument is located at Revolyutsii Avenue, 48, near the puppet theater “Shut” (“Jester”).

Monument to Kitten from Lizyukova Street - a monument dedicated to the kitten Vasily from the Soviet cartoon “Kitten from Lizyukova Street”, who, according to the plot, lived on Lizyukova Street in Voronezh.
