Photos show the luxury mega yachts that belong to Russian oligarchs — some of whom have hidden their ships as the UK ramps up sanctions.

  • Sanctions targeting Russian oligarchs threaten their luxury assets — including their mega yachts.
  • Many countries have implemented sanctions targeting Putin and Russian oligarchs following Russia's attack on Ukraine.
  • Insider compiled a photo list of some of the luxury vessels.

Russian billionaires' assets — including their megayachts — are in danger of being seized as countries continue to impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden announced that the US will make a substantial effort to seize Russian oligarchs' assets.

"We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets," Biden said in his State of The Union address on March 1. "We are coming for your ill-begotten gains."

Since the US is not in "armed conflict" with Russia it may be legally tricky to seize assets like yachts, Insider reported .

"The threshold for seizing assets under sanctions is that the US has to be in armed conflict with the owner of the assets," Brian O'Toole, an economic sanctions expert, tweeted last Friday. "The idea of turning Russian corruption into Ukrainian assistance is lovely but this idea is illegal, period."

It can also be difficult to find out who the owners of these yachts are.

Offshore companies typically own the luxury vessels, but enough "public speculation" pointing to a Russian oligarch as an owner is likely "sufficient for a seizure," Insider reported .

Many of the oligarchs moved their yachts to places where they can't be seized, such as the Maldives, which does not have an extradition treaty with the US.

Insider has compiled a list of photos with mega yachts linked to Russian oligarchs.

Galactica Super Nova

Amid sanctions and seizures targeting Russian billionaires, Galactica Super Nova — said to be linked to the CEO of Russian oil firm Lukoil — is no longer detectable via ship tracker site MarineTraffic , The Daily Beast reported Thursday.

The superyacht — whose owner is named Vagit Alekperov — had just been in Montenegro last week, Insider reported .

Alekperov is not currently the target of any sanctions.

The yacht is almost 230 feet long and can hold up to 12 guests and 16 crew members, according to the ship maker Heesen Yachts .

The ship also has a helicopter pad that can turn into an outdoor movie theatre, also according to the ship maker.

The Amore Vero

France seized Amore Vero, a 281-foot megayacht linked to oligarch and politician Igor Sechin, on March 3.

The yacht, Amore Vero, is estimated to have a value of $120 million . It has a swimming pool that doubles as a helicopter pad and a private deck for its owner, according to Oceana , the ship maker.

Per The Wall Street Journal , officials believe that Amore Vero is "owned by a company whose majority shareholder was Mr. Sechin," though the outlet does not provide the name of the company.

Sechin is the CEO of Rosneft, Russia's oil giant, and a former deputy prime minister. A known Putin ally , he was sanctioned by both the EU and the US before France seized his yacht last week .

Sechin was one of seven oligarchs sanctioned by the UK on Thursday.

People in Russia have referred to Sechin as "Darth Vader" and "the scariest man on Earth," according to The Guardian .

Alisher Usmanov has been sanctioned by the EU, the US, the UK, and Switzerland. His boat remains in Germany, but the country says it hasn't seized it.

Usmanov's Dilbar is "is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage," according to Lürssen , the German ship's maker.

It's 512-foot long and weighs 15,917 tons. The ship has been docked in Germany for months undergoing a "refitting," but last week Forbes reported that it was unable to leave the dock.

Germany, however, has denied that it formally seized Dilbar.

Forbes said that "the German federal customs agency is the 'responsible enforcement authority' and would have to issue an export waiver for the yacht to leave, and that 'no yacht leaves port that is not allowed to do so.'"

Still, multiple outlets reported that Usmanov has fired the crew on the Dilbar.

The Uzbekistan-born oligarch is a supporter of Putin.

"I am proud that I know Putin, and the fact that everybody does not like him is not Putin's problem," Usmanov told Forbes  in a 2010 interview.

Nirvana is not Potanin's only superyacht, he also owns another named Barbara, according to Fortune .

Vekselberg is a Ukrainian-born businessman who owns Renova, a Russian conglomerate, according to The Guardian .

He was one of nearly two dozen Russian oligarchs and officials that the US sanctioned on Friday.

The US Treasury Department claims that he has close ties with Putin, and has announced that assets such as his $90 million jet and his superyacht Tango have been frozen, Insider reported .

Monaco: Russian Billionaire Shows off His Largest Sailing Yacht in World

Andrey Melnichenko's Sailing Yacht (Twitter)

A Russian billionaire showed off his spectacular superyacht during the Monaco Grand Prix.

Andrey Melnichenko's Sailing Yacht A drifted along the coast of Monaco on Sunday as Daniel Ricciardo won the crown jewel race on the Formula One schedule.

The tycoon’s £360million grey yacht – the largest sailing yacht in the world – is a 468ft-long vessel that boasts eight floors, a pool and a helipad.

It is powered by a 'hybrid diesel-electric package with controllable pitch propellers' and is designed to accommodate 20 guests as well as a crew of 54.

The yacht is said to have been named Sailing Yacht A as Melnichenko likes his vessels to be first in shipping registers.

Sailing Yacht A was built in Kiel, Germany, by Nobiskrug for Melnichenko, who controls the Russian fertiliser producer Eurochem.

The 46-year-old industrialist is worth $13.8billion, according to Forbes, putting him in the top 100 richest people in the world.

Melnichenko also owns the £240million Motor Yacht A, a custom Boeing 737 private jet as well as properties around the world, including a penthouse in New York City and a villa in the French Riviera.

He lives a jet-setting lifestyle with his wife Aleksandra, former model and pop star from Serbia.

The pair married in an opulent wedding in the south of France in 2005, which featured performances by Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera.

When money is no object, it pays to keep up with the times.

And that's exactly what one Russian billionaire has done as he has upgraded his £190million superyacht for a new model - at a cost of £260million.

Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko's 'Sailing Yacht A,' which Mr Melnichenko is thought to have named 'A' to ensure it is listed first in shipping registers, is taking its first sea trials in Kiel, northern Germany.

The behemoth is the world's largest sailing superyacht as the Russian industrialist takes his quest to ruling the seas one step further.

The vessel is an upgrade to the Russian billionaire's current multi-million pound 'Motor Yacht A,' that set him back £190million.

At 468ft in length, with ship masts nearing 300ft high, the 'mega-yacht,' has eight floors and includes an underwater observation room.

Superyachtfan.com reports that the boat is powered by a 'hybrid diesel-electric package with controllable pitch propellers,' and is designed to accommodate 20 guests and a crew of 54.

The yacht was designed by Frenchman Philippe Starck and built by German Naval Yards, Nobiskrug.

Mr Melnichenko is expected to recover some of the costs by licensing the technology developed for the vessel for commercial applications.

The 43-year-old was born in Belarus and is married to a former Serbian model. He was named as the 97th wealthiest person on the planet by Forbes, and the ninth richest in Russia.

Mr Melnichenko, whose net worth is estimated at £6billion ($9billion), founded the fertilizer producer EuroChem, the coal producer Suek, the power generator SGK, and the pipe exporter TMK.

Speaking about the project earlier, a spokesman for Mr Melnichenko said it 'pushed the boundaries.'

'This project was a considerable financial risk for him as he had to fund massive R&D to see if he could achieve his vision,' they said.

'But he is a man to always push the boundaries and to challenge the industries he works with to think out of the box so he can achieve something new and exciting as well as beautiful.

'Sailing Yacht A is a monument to invention.'

Benjamin Maltby of MatrixLloyd, the global authority on superyachts', told MailOnline Travel that while the yacht may be ready to sail, the interior design work will be ongoing.

'While she's been launched, the interior will take many more months to complete,' the company said.

'It's where the cash really gets splashed. Interiors typically cost at least £10,000 per square metre – and often much more.

'Make no mistake - this will be a very significant ship. While precise details of the sailing rig have yet to be released, not since the days of the mighty clipper sailing ships, such as the Cutty Sark, has such a large sailing vessel been built.

'This new superyacht will be nearly twice the length and over twice the width of the Cutty Sark. 'The green lobby should be celebrating - as cargo ships are significant CO2 contributors.

'The masts were built by Magma Structures in Portsmouth - just a stone's throw from another well known sailing vessel, HMS Victory, which is less than half the length of this new superyacht.'

Sarah Johnson from Magma Structures told MailOnline Travel: 'We are really proud of the team who build these masts, that are the largest free-standing rigs in the world.

'We are the only company who can produce structures like this of this size, it's great for Britain to be involved.'

Boat International  reports that the previous argest sailing yacht on the water is 96.35 metre Sea Cloud, a classic beauty launched in 1931, followed by the modern falcon-rigged iconic yacht Maltese Falcon at 88 metres LOA.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO KEEP A SUPERYACHT ON THE WATER?

From Russian oligarchs to Middle Eastern royalty to Hollywood producers, it takes a certain type of person to own a superyacht - crucially, they must be super rich.

Andrey Milnichenko has invested $451 million into his new vessel Sailing Yacht A.

However, the initial cost is only part of owning such a luxurious vessel.

For wealthy owners like Roman Abramovich and UAE president Khalifa Al Nahyan, owners of two of the costliest private vessels in the world, the costs associated with keeping such big boats on the water are staggering.

The original plans for Sailing Yacht A have become a reality for the wealthy Russian businessman

The original plans for Sailing Yacht A have become a reality for the wealthy Russian businessman

Insurance company Towergate estimates that 10 per cent of the initial value of a superyacht goes on operating costs.

For Chelsea Football Club owner Abramovich's Eclipse, a 162.5m vessel with a missile defence system that cost the billionaire an astronomical $500milion (£332), that means $50m (£33m) a year.

The standard fuel usage for a 71m yacht is 500 litres an hour, meaning an average of $400,000 (£265,000) is spent on petrol every year per vessel.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) works out at 15-25 per cent of the vessel's value while docking costs are an average $350,000 (£232,000) and $240,000 (£159,000) the standard for insurance sees the costs soar.

Add to that the expected $1million (£664,000) per year for maintenance and repairs and the wages for an average $1.4m (£930,000) for an on-board crew - which can range from less than 20 to 154 staff on the Sultan of Oman's mysterious Al Said superyacht - and it's a significant outlay.

The 25th edition of the event in glamorous Monaco brings together manufacturers, owners, buyers and enthusiasts at what is considered the most prestigious pleasure boat show in the world.

With more than 33,000 people expected to attend, these are some of the most expensive vessels for sale, according to MatrixLloyd, a leading authority on superyacht deals.

Superyacht owned by oligarch with close ties to Putin seized by U.S.

Linked to billionaire viktor vekselberg, tango is a 78-metre vessel valued at $120m us.

The U.S. government seized a mega yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to the Russian president on Monday, the first in the government's sanctions enforcement initiative to "seize and freeze" giant boats and other pricey assets of Russian elites.

Spain's Civil Guard and U.S. federal agents descended on the yacht at the Marina Real in the port of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain's Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Associated Press reporters at the scene saw police going in and out of the boat on Monday morning.

A Civil Guard source told The Associated Press that the immobilized yacht was the Tango, a 78-metre vessel that carries a Cook Islands flag and that Superyachtfan.com, a specialized website that tracks the world's largest and most exclusive recreational boats, set its value at $120 million US.

The yacht is among the assets linked to Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire and close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who heads the Moscow-based Renova Group, a conglomerate encompassing metals, mining, tech and other assets, according to U.S. Treasury Department documents. All of Vekselberg's assets in the U.S. are frozen and U.S. companies are forbidden from doing business with him and his entities.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the seizure in a statement released by the Justice Department, which estimated the value of the vessel as "at least $90 million."

"Today marks our task force's first seizure of an asset belonging to a sanctioned individual with close ties to the Russian regime. It will not be the last," said Garland. "Together, with our international partners, we will do everything possible to hold accountable any individual whose criminal acts enable the Russian government to continue its unjust war."

Vekselberg familiar to U.S. officials

Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen have assembled a task force known as REPO — short for Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs — as an effort to enforce sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

Vekselberg has long had ties to the U.S. including a green card he once held and homes in New York and Connecticut. The Ukrainian-born businessman built his fortune by investing in the aluminum and oil industries in the post-Soviet era.

Vekselberg was also questioned in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and has worked closely with his American cousin, Andrew Intrater, who heads the New York investment management firm Columbus Nova.

Vekselberg and Intrater were thrust into the spotlight in the Mueller probe after the lawyer for adult film star Stormy Daniels released a memo that claimed $500,000 US in hush money was routed through Columbus Nova to a shell company set up by Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. Columbus Nova denied that Vekselberg played any role in its payments to Cohen.

Vekselberg and Intrater met with Cohen at Trump Tower, one of several meetings between members of Trump's inner circle and high-level Russians during the 2016 campaign and transition.

The 64-year-old mogul founded Renova Group more than three decades ago. The group holds the largest stake in United Co. Rusal, Russia's biggest aluminum producer, among other investments.

Vekselberg was first sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018, and again in March of this year, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began. Vekselberg has also been sanctioned by authorities in the United Kingdom.

The U.S. Justice Department has also launched a sanctions enforcement task force known as KleptoCapture, which also aims to enforce financial restrictions in the U.S. imposed on Russia and its billionaires, working with the FBI, Treasury and other federal agencies. That task force will also target financial institutions and entities that have helped oligarchs move money to dodge sanctions.

"Today's seizure of Viktor Vekselberg's yacht, the Tango, in Spain is the result of an unprecedented multinational effort to enforce U.S. sanctions targeting those elites who have enabled Russia's unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine," said Andrew Adams, director of that task force. "For those who have tied their fortunes to a brutal and lawless regime, today's action is a message that those nations dedicated to the rule of law are equally dedicated to separating the oligarchs from their tainted luxuries."

The White House has said that many allied countries, including Germany, the U.K., France, Italy and others are involved in trying to collect and share information against Russians targeted for sanctions. In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden warned oligarchs that, "we are coming for your ill-begotten gains."

Other yachts seized

Monday's capture is not the first time Spanish authorities have been involved in the seizure of a Russian oligarch's superyacht. Officials there said they had seized a vessel valued at over $140 million US owned by the CEO of a state-owned defence conglomerate and a close Putin ally.

French authorities have also seized superyachts, including one believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Italy has also seized several yachts and other assets.

Italian financial police moved quickly seizing the superyacht Lena belonging to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin, in the port of San Remo; the 65-metre Lady M owned by Alexei Mordashov in nearby Imperia, featuring six suites and estimated to be worth 65 million euros; as well as villas in Tuscany and Como, according to government officials.

Italy’s finance police have seized a super-yacht from Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko in the port of Trieste.

The seizure of the 143-m vessel, called ‘SY A’ and valued at €530 million, is as high an eight-storey building and is the largest sailing yacht in the world, reports Italian newspaper   Corriere della Sera .

The move is part of measures taken against Russian tycoons included in the EU ‘black list’ for sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The vessel, which can reportedly accommodate 60 guests and crew, is equipped with a large swimming pool, an underwater observatory and a helipad.

The FBI linked the Amadea to the Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, and the vessel became a target of Task Force KleptoCapture, launched in March to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs to put pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. The U.S. said Kerimov secretly bought the vessel last year through various shell companies.

But Justice Department  officials had been stymied  by a legal effort to contest the American seizure warrant and by a yacht crew that refused to sail for the U.S. American officials won a legal battle in Fiji to take the Cayman Islands-flagged superyacht earlier this month.

US-UKRAINE-RUSSIA-CONFLICT

The Amadea made a stop in Honolulu Harbor en route to the U.S. mainland. The Amadea boasts  luxury features  such as a helipad, mosaic-tiled pool, lobster tank and a pizza oven, nestled in a décor of "delicate marble and stones" and "precious woods and delicate silk fabrics," according to court documents.

"The successful seizure and transport of Amadea would not have been possible without extraordinary cooperation from our foreign partners in the global effort to enforce U.S. sanctions imposed in response to Russia's unprovoked and unjustified war in Ukraine," the Justice Department said.

Superyacht reportedly owned by Russian oligarch arrives in Honolulu after being seized

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A massive luxury yacht reportedly belonging to a Russian oligarch docked in Honolulu on Thursday. It’s one of the several yachts seized by the U.S. Department of Justice because of their owners’ ties to Russia.

Tug boats met the yacht at sea about 10 a.m. and guided it into Honolulu Harbor.

The 348-foot luxury yacht, the Amadea, made a U-turn inside Honolulu Harbor and then docked at Pier 2. Federal agents with the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service were on board the vessel, which reportedly belongs to oligarch Soleiman Kerimov.

The yacht was seized in Fiji last month.

At a news conference last month, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged to go after oligarchs’ assets amid the ongoing Russian attack on Ukraine. “It doesn’t matter how far you sail your yacht or how well you conceal your assets, the Justice Department will use every tool and find you and hold you accountable,” he said.

Fijian law enforcement and the FBI took control of the yacht last month. It’s valued at more than $300 million.

Kerimov himself is worth an estimated $14 billion.

He was sanctioned by the U.S. for alleged money laundering in 2018.

About a half dozen super vessels have been seized so far as part of an international campaign to pressure those aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Justice Department will be relentless to hold accountable those who facilitate the death and destruction we are witnessing in Ukraine,” Garland said.

Special features on the sprawling yacht include a helipad, multiple pools and bars.

The Amadea left Fiji on June 7. Its journey was delayed because of disagreements between the US and the crew and contractors. The vessel is set to head out to California on Friday.

U.S. moves to claim $300M superyacht associated with ‘Russian Gatsby’

Super yacht Amadea

The Justice Department officially moved Monday to claim a 348-foot superyacht it says belongs to a sanctioned billionaire oligarch known as the " Russian Gatsby ."

In a civil forfeiture claim filed in federal court in New York, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams' office said that the $300 million vessel, the Amadea , is "beneficially owned" by Suleiman Kerimov and that the "superyacht was improved and maintained in violation of applicable sanctions against Kerimov and those acting on his behalf."

The filing contends the yacht, which has a helipad, an infinity pool, a Jacuzzi and multiple bars, should be forfeited to the U.S. government.

The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Kerimov , who's worth an estimated $14 billion and has ties to the Russian government, over alleged money laundering in 2018.

Super yacht Amadea

He has been referred to as a "Russian Gatsby" in part because he rarely does interviews while indulging in the high life. He has hosted multimillion-dollar parties at his villas on the French Riviera, including one in 2008 that reportedly featured a performance by Beyoncé, and his car collection includes a rare Ferrari Enzo, which he once crashed into a tree in 2006.

The yacht was seized in Fiji last year as part of the work of the Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture, which has been going after the assets of sanctioned oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

The court filing said officials were able to prove Kerimov's ownership by showing that he was responsible for numerous upgrades to the vessel, including a new pizza oven.

However, another oligarch, Eduard Khudainatov, maintains that he's the owner of the Amadea and has filed legal challenges for its return. Khudainatov is the former chairman and CEO of Rosneft, the state-controlled gas company in Russia, and he has not been sanctioned by the U.S. government.

The Justice Department has said in court filings that Khudainatov is a "straw owner" and that he couldn't even afford the upkeep on the Amadea and another superyacht he says he owns.

Khudainatov's lawyer, Adam Ford, sued in federal court in California seeking the yacht's return late Sunday, before the federal action Monday. The filing says the government's estimate of his client's wealth is based in part on his failure to show up on Forbes' annual billionaires list, and it contends "a magazine's list should not be the basis of, or suffice as evidence for, any U.S. government enforcement action."

Ford said in a statement, "We are confident that a neutral arbiter will order the return of the Amadea to our client."

The U.S. has worked with numerous countries to seize a number of superyachts with ties to oligarchs, whose ownership interests are often hard to prove.

Task Force KleptoCapture co-director Michael Khoo said in a statement that the forfeiture proceeding against the Amadea came "after a careful and painstaking effort to develop the necessary evidence showing Suleiman Kerimov’s clear interest in the Amadea and the repeated misuse of the U.S. financial system to support and maintain the yacht for his benefit."

“Getting to this point required extensive cooperation across the U.S. government and with foreign partners. It underscores our resolve to undertake challenging, cross-border investigations and to send a message to Russian oligarchs and their enablers: if you flout the rule of law, you can expect to pay real and meaningful consequences,” Khoo said.

23 Lesser-Known Facts About Kamala Harris

Beyond the headlines, Ms. Harris has taken ballet, collected Converse sneakers and felt the influence of her grandfather, a diplomat.

Kamala Harris’s long political résumé is well known and expansive: Before becoming vice president, she was a U.S. senator. Before that, she was the California attorney general and the district attorney in San Francisco. Here are some things you might not know about the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

1. Her name translates to “lotus flower” in Sanskrit . It’s a near-mythical symbol in Indian culture, representing beauty, prosperity and fertility.

2. She has broken the most ties in U.S. Senate history. As vice president, she has often been called upon to cast a deciding vote when the Senate is deadlocked. Last year, she cast her 32nd tiebreaker, beating the previous record of 31 set by John C. Calhoun, who was vice president from 1825 to 1832.

3. She’s short (compared to presidents past). Five-foot-four, to be exact. If elected, she would be one of the two shortest presidents in American history. (The other is James Madison.) But her height checks in at just about average for an American woman.

4 . She knows how to deliver fries with that . Ms. Harris worked at McDonald’s between her freshman and sophomore years in college. She fried the fries, worked the ice cream machine and staffed the cash register.

5. Her best friend set her up with her future husband, Doug Emhoff . Their first “date” was an hourlong phone call, and they made plans to get dinner that weekend in Los Angeles, where he was based. “I could hardly wait to fly down,” Ms. Harris wrote.

6. She loves Doritos. In her memoir, she described the night in 2016 that Donald J. Trump won the presidency (which was the same night she got elected to the U.S. Senate). “No one really knew what to say or do,” she wrote. “I sat down on the couch with Doug and ate an entire family-size bag of Classic Doritos. Didn’t share a single chip.”

7. She attended both a Black Baptist church and a Hindu temple as a child . “My mother understood very well that she was raising two Black daughters,” she wrote in her memoir. “And she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud Black women.”

8. Her prosecutorial style left some in Washington flummoxed. When Ms. Harris served in the Senate, she drew attention for her sharp questioning of witnesses. In 2017, as she was grilling then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his role as campaign surrogate for Mr. Trump and contact with Russian officials, a visibly flustered Mr. Sessions objected. “I’m not able to be rushed this fast,” he complained at one point. “It makes me nervous.”

9. She spent her high school years in Montreal . “It was a difficult transition,” she wrote, “since the only French I knew was from my ballet classes.”

10. She failed the California bar exam on her first try. “I couldn’t get my head around it,” she wrote. She soon realized her preparation amounted to “the most half-assed performance of my life.” She passed on her second attempt.

11. She tangled with Jamie Dimon. Ms. Harris got into a heated disagreement with Mr. Dimon, J.P. Morgan’s chief executive, when she was the attorney general of California. It happened during the financial crisis, when she was pursuing relief from big banks for homeowners who had faced foreclosure. “We were like dogs in a fight,” Ms. Harris recalled in her memoir. 12. But their most recent encounter was calmer. She eventually secured more than $20 billion in relief from the banks, and despite their history, Ms. Harris and Mr. Dimon had lunch at the White House in March.

13. She likes to cook . Ms. Harris loves food. She has ribbed her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, about his “ white guy tacos ,” shared her turkey cooking tips and said that she liked to read recipes to unwind . In 2019 Ms. Harris posted a series of cooking videos to YouTube, including one with the actor Mindy Kaling that has been watched more than six million times. “Senator Harris, I say this with respect, you’re kind of a show-off,” Ms. Kaling quipped. “Right?” Ms. Harris replied.

14. She goes way back with Barack Obama. She hosted a San Francisco fund-raiser for his 2004 Senate run, then was the first major office holder in California to endorse his 2008 presidential bid, even as most Democratic heavyweights threw their support behind Hillary Clinton. The endorsement, seen by some as a political risk, paid off. Mr. Obama endorsed her bid for California attorney general in 2010, and on Tuesday he praised her as a uniter on a mission to “build a country that is more secure and more just, more equal and more free.”

15. But she once turned down a job offer in his administration. It was 2014, and Eric Holder, Mr. Obama’s attorney general, called her and said he was planning to step down. He asked if she was interested in succeeding him. She considered the offer but ultimately declined.

16. Mr. Obama once publicly opined about Ms. Harris’s looks. The former president called Ms. Harris “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country” — and later apologized. The remark came at a fund-raiser in 2013, right after he also complimented her on her smarts and dedication to the law.

17. Her grandfather was a diplomat. Ms. Harris’s maternal grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, was a civil servant in India. When she was a child, Mr. Gopalan served as a diplomat in Zambia. She has said he was among her “ favorite people ” and “ subconsciously influenced ” how she thinks.

18. She was a political activist in college. During her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, D.C., she spent many weekends on the National Mall protesting apartheid in South Africa.

19. She remains close with her line sisters in Alpha Kappa Alpha. At Howard, where she competed on the debate team and graduated in 1986, Ms. Harris joined the Black sorority. In July, she said that she kept a signed copy of a book by one of its founders, Norma Boyd, in her West Wing office “as a testament to our enduring legacy.”

20. She also belongs to a prominent, invite-only nonprofit for Black women. Ms. Harris joined The Links Incorporated in 2018. It’s one of the oldest groups of its kind in America — a service organization focused on Black Americans and other people of African ancestry. Members have included Rosa Parks, Betty Shabazz and the civil rights lawyer Constance Baker Motley.

21. Her footwear is distinct. Ms. Harris has a large collection of Chuck Taylors: a black pair, a white pair, Chucks with and without laces, Chucks for hot and cold weather, and “the platform kind for when I’m wearing a pantsuit.”

22. Her love of dancing has persisted from her childhood to the West Wing. While she was in Montreal, she started a dance group called Midnight Magic. More recently, videos of her dancing in public — to Q-Tip at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hiphop, down an escalator , with a marching band of children — have gone viral on social media.

23. Thursday will be doubly important for Ms. Harris. She is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination on her and Mr. Emhoff’s 10th wedding anniversary.

An earlier version of this article misidentified a video in which Kamala Harris was dancing. It was from an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop, not her 50th birthday.
