ICE 70rs, the new ICE YACHTS fast cruiser

The renderings of the brand-new ICE 70rs have finally been unveiled, a racing version and heir to the surprising ICE 70 which, as the four units already sold testify, was a great success at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021.  Modern design, marked by an absolutely distinctive trait, such as the upturned bow (scimitar-shaped) and the stern characteristic of the Volvo Open 70 style to which, with this new model, is added a carbon bowsprit almost two metres long. All the ingredients are there for those who want to sail really fast and maybe even try their hand at the buoys on the race course. The ICE 70 is, moreover, the natural evolution of the ICE 52 , the shipyard’s best-seller, a boat that can boast no less than 18 units on the water. The brand-new project was born near Crema, in the Salvirola-based Ice Yachts headquarters where Umberto Felci , together with the boatyard’s technical staff, developed the study of a fast cruiser with intriguing features. The boat, which has already been under construction for several months, will be launched at the end of May.

ICE 70rs and lifting keel

The fin of the ICE 70rs is made of double Weldox steel. The lead torpedo is CNC-milled. The bulb is oversized to reduce overall weight with the same righting moment. These features undoubtedly also reduce rolling at anchor and heeling when sailing.

There are also a couple of special features, such as the structural carbon fibre tanks under the dinette floor and the soundproofed engine room with double seals on the hatches.

The rudder , too, is the result of an advanced project: it has an autoclave-forged shaft at 7 bar and 145 degrees and a carbon blade, a solution designed to offer great control and manoeuvrability, even at maximum heeling angles.

Noteworthy are also the tender garage , which can accommodate an inflated tender of almost four metres in length, and the cockpit, which is really spacious and furnished with large wing benches.

High-quality interior

The panels, which do not forego high quality cabinetry, have been lightened in order to reduce the weight of the craft and improve overall performance.

It is no coincidence that the rig is also in carbon and is fitted as standard with a park avenue boom to reduce (or lower) the sails with extreme ease (and great joy) for the lucky owner who will own the new ICE 70rs.

ICE 70 RS, the best seller

It is quick and easy to sail and is a perfect example of a real cruiser-racer. Designed by Umberto Felci, it is the lighter sports version of the ICE 70, one of the yard’s best sellers

It was a beautiful day, the kind that the English like to say is perfect to go sailing . A fifteen-knot wind. It was hot, but not too hot, and there was nobody else out on the water. The air was clear, cleaned by a soft westerly wind. Behind us was the Gulf of Varazze. “Go on, take the helm. And here are the winches and the sheets. Go on, you sail her”. Marco Malgara, the energetic CEO of ICE Yachts, is a tireless promoter of the firm, and he quickly hands the boat over to me . The ICE 70 RS isn’t small: 21 metres long overall, with 5.76 metres maximum beam and 27 tonnes displacement. The sail surface is practically 300 square metres. So definitely not a sailing dinghy, but it handles like one. We were sailing close-hauled, but it felt very light at the helm. The large wheels can be moved with just two fingers. It handles the gusts of wind well, and heels just the right amount to sit on the stern chine.

The master cabin is in the bow, where it is well-lit by a double window. The bed, which is accessible from both sides, is 210 centimetres long. In the stern, the two classic twin rooms house four guests.

I enjoyed the warm feel of the teak under the soles of my feet, and the log that told me we were sailing at nine knots – I was grateful for my job . I slackened the sails a bit to bear up by a few degrees, up to 37 degrees apparent, and we were going at 9.6 knots. Then I changed course, on my own, and everything was very straightforward. The jib doesn’t overlap and the rigging is all within reach and is assisted by electric winches: you can control them with just a finger. Of course, you do have to get through that first moment of feeling lost that you get when you find yourself faced with two consoles with an endless spread of buttons and actuators. What should you press? But after a few minutes and especially after doing some manoeuvres, everything became easy. I especially appreciated the fact that the mainsail traveller and backstay are within reach: getting the right trim doesn’t take long, and it is lots of fun.

The keel-stepped mast and boom are in carbon fibre from Axxon , while the telescopic keel (with hydraulics by Cariboni ) was built by Galetti and gives a draught of 4.40 metres, which goes down to 2.80 when it is retracted into its trunk. The deck layout is extremely clear, even though there has been no cutting back in terms of trimmings. The double helm is supported by particularly elegant columns/consoles.

The ICE 70 RS is fast and responsive, both characteristics of Felci Design, the firm from Lake Garda . I have to confess  I have a soft spot for the boats created by the studio and have had since way back in 2004 when I had the good fortune to test th eir first 49, Nordica , on a beautiful windy day in the Gulf of Tigullio. We didn’t try out the boat with sails set for following winds but, when you look at the polar diagrams, the figures show that you can travel consistently at over ten knots at 140°, which is a figure which is more than in line with what we saw against the wind. During our test, the westerly wind in the gulf increased and the waves got up a bit, to around a metre and a half, so nothing too taxing, but enough to realise, when I went below, that this is a solid boat.

RS STANDS FOR RACING SPORT AND DISTINGUISHES THE FASTER MODELS FROM THE YARD BASED IN SALVIROLA. THE NEW VERSION DISPLACES A TONNE LESS THAN THE “NORMAL” 70.

The build is light, but sophisticated, a feature of modern cruiser-racers. The hull is in fibreglass and carbon fibre, with the deck entirely in carbon fibre, as are the structures and tanks . The lamination is done with injection moulding, and as well as the hull, the deck is also attached to the structural frame. What does that do? It creates a single block: there is no creaking, and there aren’t any vibrations or annoying noise, whether it be from hitting the waves sailing upwind, or using the engine at full revs (at over eleven knots) to go return to the harbour. Other unusual features on the new ICE 70RS include a retractable keel, which reduces the draught from a demanding 4.40 metres (which is nevertheless good at keeping you upright) to a more reasonable 2.80, while the tender garage in the stern can take a 4.2-metre dinghy.

The standard motorisation is a Yanmar that turns out 195 horsepower. At 2800 rpm it means the boat can do eleven knots, while the recommended cruising rate is 2000 rpm, so around nine knots. Alternatively, you can move up to a 230 hp model, again by Yanmar.

There has also been a lot of attention paid to restricting weight below decks, with interiors that have been lightened with the use of composite materials . Of course, and in line with the brand’s DNA , there is a significant degree of customisation available. The base layout is for three or four cabins and three bathrooms. On the boat, we tried we greatly liked the decision to put the galley at the base of the mast, where it is only partially separated from the dinette, a solution which gives it plenty of room while leaving it separated from the living and dining area. We weren’t so keen on having the map area alongside it, where it is too far away from the companionway and from whoever is in the cockpit. On the other hand, we were impressed by the long and elegant windows on the deckhouse that give a pleasant feeling of lightness and luminosity to the whole interior.

To guarantee these performances are added the high technologies used in the construction and the incredible quality of a craftsmanship of the highest quality performed by technicians who make use of the experience gained over many years of activity dedicated to the construction of boats that have written history. of the sail.

Ice 70rs is equipped with a fin made of double Weldox steel with high mechanical characteristics and a torpedo in numerically controlled milled lead that offer the advantage of reducing the weight of the ballast in percentage terms and therefore the total displacement of the boat with the same righting moment. . Thanks also to the larger bulb, it is possible to significantly reduce the heeling in navigation and the roll when stationary in the harbor.

Hence, great power in the gaits in which this is essential and minimal displacement in the gaits in which this represents a brake, such as for example the striding gaits and motor navigation.

All this allows you to maintain very high averages in all conditions, both in racing and cruising, sailing or motoring.

The deck is completely in carbon with one step infusion and epoxy resin, specially dedicated to sport owners, it reflects the general lines of the Felci Yacht Design projects, combining simplicity and style, elegance and efficiency, comfort and versatility.  The cockpit, characterized by large benches and comfortable paramaring backrests, is decidedly oversized and allows maximum mobility to numerous crews. In the garage there are two electric winches / winches for the opening of the hatch and the handling of the tender, always with a view to the search for comfort and ease of use.

Ice 53 ST : un pur-sang italien qui fait de petites concessions à la croisière

Le jeune chantier naval Ice Yachts démontre ses ambitions autour de trois bouées, en lançant le 53 ST, pour "Sport Turismo". Cette unité, qui est une évolution de l'Ice 52 RS, possède toutes les caractéristiques pour s'imposer en in shore ou en régate semi-hauturière.

Des caractéristiques prometteuses

Construit en infusion époxy, l'Ice 53ST déplace près de 2 tonnes de moins que son équivalent dédié à la croisière. Associé à un sandwich PVC avec des renforts en carbone, ces caractéristiques lui confèrent la raideur nécessaire pour un programme de régates. Sa quille en acier qui plonge à 3,40 m, associée à une longue pelle de safran en carbone, devraient lui apporter un excellent comportement. Avec un ensemble bulbe et voile de quille de près de 4300 kg, le rapport de lest est incroyable sur ce voilier qui déplace à peine 10 tonnes.

Le plan de pont est résolument conçu pour la régate en équipage. Épuré, sans aucune concession pour le confort, tout est prévu pour manœuvrer vite. Son mât en carbone haut module Axxon, tenu par d'impressionnantes bastaques, culmine à 24 m.

Le plan de pont est conçu pour un équipage nombreux. Facile d'accès et bien dimensionné, toutes les manœuvres tombent rapidement sous la main.

Enfin, le coup de crayon réussi du cabinet Felci reste fidèle au style propre du petit chantier italien, fondé en 2012.

Une version régate monacale

L'ICE 53ST possède deux versions d'aménagement intérieur, afin de s'adapter à un programme de régate ou de croisière.

En version "régate " les aménagements intérieurs sont succincts et réduits au strict minimum. Pas de vaigrages ou autre placage décoratif. On est dans l'utilitaire. La table à carte et le coin cuisine apportent une légère touche colorée à cet intérieur austère.

Des bannettes sur des cadres en composites pourront accueillir 10 membres d'équipages, dont quatre prennent place dans le carré. Plus en avant, on retrouve la pointe avant, complètement vide, dont la seule utilité sera de stocker des voiles de portant. Idem pour la zone entre le pied de mât et le peak avant, qui est dépourvu d'aménagements.

Enfin, les deux cabines arrière symétriques sont également équipées de deux bannettes identiques à celles du carré.

Un kit de conversion à la croisière 

Innovation imaginée par le chantier italien : un kit d'aménagements pour la croisière est disponible sur le Ice 53 ST. Celui-ci comprend plusieurs éléments qui transforment ce voilier de régate en une unité un peu plus accueillante. Nécessitant entre 3 et 4h de montage, il tient dans une petite camionnette et apporte une petite touche cosy pour pratiquer de la croisière estivale.

Une construction high tech artisanale

Le chantier Ice Yacht est une petite structure qui produit une dizaine d'unités par an. L'équipe s'adapte aux différents désidératas de sa clientèle, et à la possibilité de proposer un haut degré de personnalisation.
