Kevin has been boating for 25 years. His love and passion for teaching and boating awarded him Instructor of the year from American Sailing Association for 2015.

Capt. Al Noble

Al has over 25 years on the water and tens of thousands of cruising hours under his belt. He maintains his 100 Ton Captians license and when he isn’t sailing can be found kayaking or fishing for trout in western North Carolina with his wife. Al has a passion for the sea that is unrivaled and experience that surpasses most.

The Recreational Powerboating Association will be conducting “Close Quarters Powerboat Handling” clinics using its newly developed training simulator at 5 indoor boat shows during January and February to promote awareness of its training programs and kick off its instructor development efforts.

Close Quarters Powerboat Handling

Close Quarters Powerboat Handling is an intensive, 12-hour powerboat handling course that is designed to provide the skills necessary to maneuver a powerboat confidently, competently and safely in tight spaces. Successful completion of the program indicates the student has demonstrated competence in handling either a twin inboard, single inboard or outboard/stern drive vessel in close quarters in light wind and or currents.

The goal of this course is to teach safe, efficient use of radar for small-craft navigation in any condition of visibility. Radar teaches safe, efficient use of small-craft radar for piloting, chart navigation, and collision avoidance, including radar principles and practical matters of radar operation as well as using a realistic PC based radar simulator to illustrate radar measurements. This course covers a broad range of topics related to radar. Specific topics to be learned include, how radar works, interpreting the screen, position navigation, radar and navigation rules.

Your boater education card may help you avoid fines from states where mandatory boater education laws are in effect, and may also entitle you to a reduction on your marine insurance.

Boating Safety Tips

The captain’s first and primary responsibility is for the safety of the vessel, passengers and crew. A prudent skipper always conducts a safety briefing prior to departure, because the best preparation for emergencies is a well trained crew. Crew training is the responsibility of the skipper and it is prudent to conduct drills with the crew to include: man overboard recovery, fire and abandon ship procedures.

On the water training courses available, introduction to powerboating, precision docking & boat handling, open-water boat handling, open-water advanced maneuvering.

The content of this course conforms to the  American National Standard  for on-water skills as verified through an independent third-party assessment process. It is imperative that the curriculum is adhered to; there can be no modifications or variations as that would change the course verification. 

Recognized by the American National Standards Institute as American National Standards, the On-Water Power, On-Water Sailing, and On-Water Human-Propelled standards identify fundamental skills that entry-level recreational boat operators should be able to demonstrate after receiving instruction. Course Modules

If you're a novice powerboater or simply wish to improve your skill in docking and navigating in confined spaces, this program is tailored for you. The modules in the Boat Control On-Water Training Course are constructed to impart essential boating abilities to leisure boaters or individuals employed to run a marine patrol vessel. Guided by a NSBC Certified Instructor, the course gradually covers topics from safety equipment and pre-launch procedures to docking and refueling in tight conditions, with each task gradually being practiced from idle speed to displacement, and finally planing mode.

While every module of the course may warrant a Certificate of Completion, it should be noted that this course does not lead to an instructor certification.

On-Water Courses

Boat Control On-Water Training Course

Whether you are new to powerboating or would like to increase your confidence in docking and maneuvering the boat in close quarters, this course is for you. Boat Control On-Water Training Course is taught in four course modules and designed to teach boat handling skills to recreational boaters or personnel hired to operate a vessel used in marine patrol. Take the course with one of our nationwide providers.

NSBC Instructor Certification

The National Safe Boating Council Instructor Certification course is a train-the-trainer model, progressing from close quarter maneuvers at idle speed, to maneuvers in displacement mode, and to advanced open water maneuvers. Upon successful completion of the course, the candidate becomes a NSBC Instructor that is certified to teach the Boat Control On-Water Training curriculum to students.

Skipper Club™

The National Safe Boating Council’s Skipper Club™ is for ages 13-19 interested in learning on-water powerboating skills and maneuvers. In partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, Skipper Club is focused on teaching teens valuable safe boating lessons and preparing the next generation of safe boaters.

Powerboating offers the best of both worlds, the leisurely pace of a gentle cruise and the thrill of zipping across the open water. RYA training will give you the confidence and skills to handle the boat safely and make the most of your time on the water, whatever your pace.

As well as courses for recreational boaters, RYA powerboat certificates are also used by professional open boat skippers who need to prove their competence or require  professional qualifications  for work.

The National Powerboat scheme is comprised of a series of one and two-day practical courses that can be taken either onboard a centre’s boat, or your own. There’s something for all ages and levels of experience. 

A one-day introduction to simple boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

A two-day course to get to grips with powerboat handling.

Two days of practical pilotage, passage planning and navigating by day.

Two days of planning and navigating more challenging passages by day and night.

Two days of hands-on recovery and fleet management techniques for dinghies and windsurfers for those operating in a training or racing environment.

This two-day course builds upon Level 2 Powerboat Handling skills, focussing on short-handed operations, passenger safety and comfort. Designed in consultation with the Professional Yachting Association (PYA).

Increase your confidence and get qualified with our navigation and specialist short courses.

A basic introduction to navigation for new skippers, crew or anyone interested in getting out on the water.

Get qualified to use a handheld or fixed marine VHF radio with our course and exam.

From first aid to diesel engine, there are a number of related classroom and online courses you may find useful as you develop your knowledge.

Test your skill, knowledge and experience as a powerboat skipper by taking the RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat exam.

If you want to go powerboating overseas, you’re likely to need an ICC. The Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate can be used as evidence of your competence.
