St. Petersburg vs Moscow?

By ethereal , June 30, 2008 in Northern Europe & Baltic Sea

Cool Cruiser

My DH and I are taking our first (and probably only) Baltic cruise in August on the Celebrity Constellation. We'll only have 2 days in St. Petersburg, so we're wondering if it's possible to go to Moscow for 1 day and still see enough in St. Petersburg to feel like we haven't missed out. Has anyone done this? If you only had 1 day in St. Pete, what would you see?

In late July, we'll have three days in St. Petersburg. We are doing one of those trips to Moscow through our ship's tour. That still leaves us with two days for St. Petersburg. From others on this site, some said strong to spend ALL of the time in St. Petersburg. BUT, those who have done this one day trip trip to Moscow say it is super great and the "experience of a lifetime" . It's a long, long day in going to Moscow. It's "POSSIBLE" to do your plan, but it is does sharply limit what you can see and do in St. Petersburg in only one day. In many ways you'll have to choose between seeing the great palaces outside of town at the Peterhoff and Catherine's versus the Hermitage and the wonderful city-Cathedral sites. Choices and trade-offs!!?? Lots of great options. Your choice! If your personal energy and wallet are better, it is easier to do more and accomplish most of your goals. If you've only got one day in St. Petersburg, doing a private tour makes it better to be more time efficient and see just the "best of the best" that you want to do in only one day. St. Petersburg is a large city of five million people so it does take some time for your logistics in this congested area.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Another couple at our dinner table last summer did the one day trip to Moscow and then hired a car and guide (from the shorex) to take them around St. Petersburg the next day. When it is just you and the guide and the driver, you can cover a lot of territory. You see only the things that you want to see and you don't spend a lot of time waiting for anybody.

You are right; this might be your only trip to the Baltic and for sure you should make it count. As Terry said, it is a matter of choices and trade-offs.

If I had to do St. P in a whirlwind day, I would choose the following: The Amber Room at Catherine's Palace (go straight to the Amber Room and don't stop to see anything else), the gardens at the Peterhof (don't visit any interiors if you want to save time but Monplaisire Palace is a quick visit and Peter's favorite) and then head into St. P for a driving tour of the high points and a stop at either the Hermitage or Church on Spilled Blood for an extended visit. You can spend even more time sightseeing if you bring lunch from the ship and eat in the car as you drive from place to place (order sandwiches from room services).

I think it's not good idea in 2 days visit Moscow...

I really appreciate your input -- sounds like it could be done, but definitely not in as much depth as I would like. I'm also concerned about the 15 1/2 hour Moscow involvement, coupled with what would be a hectic day in St. Petersburg, followed by Helsinki and Stockholm the following 2 days. Perhaps St. Petersburg done well (as well as 2 days allow!) would be the best solution -- especially since it's been at the top of my wish list for many years. Thanks a lot -- will drink a toast to you when I get there!!

Now go find a tour guide and car to take you around or join a small group going to the places you want to see (check out the roll call for your sailing for tour shares and search this forum for St. Petersburg to find the names of private tour companies).

Don't waste your time trying to figure out how to get from place to place --let an expert take care of that part for you. And let that expert handle the details of getting you in and out of the commercial port where most of the cruise ships dock.

Enjoy your dream cruise!!:)

Good decision and reasoning. Moscow is a long day. The day after our Moscow trip, we're waiting till 10 am to start our St. Petersburg adventures. Doing a private guide does make a huge difference in being able to see and do more. Work with them as they know the hours open, logistics, etc. Time is money. The better your budget, the more you can do. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Good morning. A scoop to start: Half of the European Investment Bank’s staff members fear reprisals if they speak up about misconduct , according to an internal survey seen by the FT.

Today, our Madrid bureau chief unpacks Pedro Sánchez’s trip to three African countries this week, and our climate correspondent reveals a fresh lawsuit against the EU’s initiative to classify aeroplanes as sustainable.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has begun a three-day trip to west Africa aimed at curbing the record number of unauthorised migrants seeking a foothold in the EU by travelling by boat to the Canary Islands, writes Barney Jopson . Context: The sharpest growth in irregular migration to the EU this year has come on the perilous Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, which lie 1,300km from mainland Spain. This is adding to the EU’s migration problems and fuelling political attacks on Sánchez at home.

The premier arrived in Mauritania late yesterday and is due to visit Gambia and Senegal today and tomorrow as he seeks to strengthen ties with heads of state, sign deals on legal migration, and applaud Spanish police already working in the region to stem illegal flows.

Soon after arriving in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital, Sánchez said he was giving a new “impetus” to Spain’s relationship with Africa. “Spain is committed to safe, orderly and regular migration,” he added.

The number of people arriving on small boats in the Canary Islands surged to 21,620 in the first seven months of this year, up 154 per cent from the same period last year, according to data from Frontex, the EU border agency.

By contrast, the number of irregular migrants taking the central Mediterranean route via Italy dropped by 64 per cent — largely due to crackdowns on people smugglers in Tunisia and Libya — although it remained a more active route in absolute terms with 32,239 crossings.

The sharp rise in the Canary Islands, which have counted a total of 340 boats this year, is explained in large part by the dire situation in Mali, run by a military regime battling an Islamist insurgency, whose nationals account for roughly half of all unauthorised arrivals.

Another driver of migration across coastal west Africa — particularly in Senegal — is the behaviour of EU-flagged boats that are being blamed for overfishing and flouting laws, the FT reported this month .

Most boats to the Canaries depart from Mauritania and Senegal, but tiny Gambia — the smallest country by land area on the African mainland — is getting a visit from Sánchez because of the pivotal role its criminal gangs play in filling the boats.

The Atlantic route taken by migrants is one of the deadliest in the world. In the first five months of this year, an estimated 4,800 people died trying to use it, according to Walking Borders, a Spanish migrant rights group.

Spanish government officials say they are braced for an increase in the number of crossing attempts in the coming weeks as the water becomes calmer.

Chart du jour: Onslaught

Kyiv has renewed its pleas for western allies to lift restrictions on the use of weapons against Russian military targets, in response to Moscow’s air strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Flights of fancy

Brussels is back to school and facing another challenge to the EU’s contested taxonomy of sustainable finance, which governs what investments can be considered green, writes Alice Hancock .

Context: the EU’s taxonomy came into force in 2020 but its classification of what are “green” investments has already landed the European Commission in legal disputes — most notably for its gas and nuclear criteria.

Now, a coalition of five NGOs backed by a 35,000-name petition are taking the commission to court over a decision to include planes and ships that run on fossil fuels in the taxonomy. Investors can therefore direct money towards these transport means as long as they meet certain efficiency standards. The NGOs deem these to be “weak”.

“The taxonomy is set to mobilise billions of euros of private finance,” said David Kay, legal director at the NGO Opportunity Green. “But the aviation and shipping criteria send completely the wrong signal to investors — directing investments to planes and ships that will pollute the climate for decades to come.”

The current criteria would allow all of the order books for airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air to be considered “green” as well as 90 per cent of Airbus’s future planes, according to the NGO Transport & Environment, which is not involved in the case.

The commission declined to comment.

The NGOs, which also include Fossielvrij NL and Protect our Winters Austria, filed their case at the European Court of Justice on Tuesday after a request had been rejected in June for the commission to undertake an internal review of the standards.
