2021 Boat of the Year Best Luxury Cruiser Winner Hylas 60

At the upper end of the cost equation for the 2021 Boat of the Year contestants, there were three boats with a price tag north of seven figures, which in our viewpoint puts them into Luxury Cruiser territory. The Southerly 480 was the outlier of the three—very cool and versatile, but with older if proven technology—which steered us into a lively discussion of the merits of two truly state-of-the-art sailboats, the HH 50 and the Hylas 60. So the question was, how do you choose between excellent and exquisite?

The similarities, apart from their rarified sticker prices, were rather striking. Both built in the Far East. Both with similar Boat of the Year pedigrees, having each notched victories in previous contests. Both marketed similarly. Both with strong support systems for buyers, including the services of pro sailors who guide you through the first days of ownership. When you buy either a Hylas or an HH, you’re also buying into a quite exclusive family.

  • Hylas 60: Best Luxury Cruiser

Of course, there’s also a huge difference. One boat has a single hull, the other a pair. Neither is right, or wrong. So it comes down to personal taste and sailing style and ambitions. Island hopping or ocean crossing? Blue water or backwaters? At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either one of these boats. If you have the wherewithal to buy one of them and you’re a good sailor and confident in your ability to handle a big boat—and these are both that—then who are we to say that one is a better choice than the other?

“I do think that these are two very good, very different expressions of cruising luxury,” Murphy said. “They represent the pinnacle of cruising luxury in 2021 as we know it.”

We couldn’t in good conscience choose between the two, so we didn’t. Each is named 2021′s Best Luxury Cruiser. Let’s delve deeper, starting with the HH 50.

“As I said earlier,” Murphy continued, “the HH is one of the two best-built boats in the fleet. Unlike the X40, it employs thermal form construction, which means they take flat panels of Corecell foam core and heat it up to make the complex shapes of the hull so that there are no slits or kerfs in the foam. In the simplest terms, you’re using that flat sheet to construct complex curves, and then you’re using the best resin available, which is epoxy, in the laminate. This is infused epoxy construction, post-cured after the fact. So this is a very, very high-quality hull.”

The big question: how do you choose between excellent and exquisite?

“This may have been one of the more interesting boats I’ve climbed aboard in terms of some of the gear choices that the owner made and the willingness of the builder to go along with them,” Pillsbury said. “For instance, the auxiliary engine was a Beta Marine diesel. And on earlier HHs, I kind of scratched my head as to whether a couple could really handle a big cat like this. But on this boat, a couple without a whole lot of big-boat sailing experiences was handling it just fine. The Jeffa steering was rack-and-pinion and very sweet. The self-tacking jib certainly made the boat a joy to sail upwind. And for a cat, it could actually sail very close to the wind. I thought the daggerboard controls were brilliant. It was just a simple continuous-line Antal winch. Not a much could go wrong there.”

Designed by the veteran cat designers Melvin & Morrelli, who brought the Gunboat line into existence, with the HH 50 they’ve moved on from the forward cockpit that distinguished those boats, and brought the helms aft and outboard, further establishing yet another trend in the moving target that is boat design. The visibility is outstanding, and the sensation of steering this boat, even in light airs, is otherworldly.

This is sailing, quite frankly, that was once unimaginable in a cruising boat. But to paraphrase Teri Hatcher on an old episode of Seinfeld , as far as the HH 50 is concerned, it’s real. And it’s spectacular.

2023 hh50 sc review 23

HH50 SC 2023 Review

The hh50 is an excellent cruising platform for experienced multihull skippers.

Performance cruising catamarans can swallow the miles quickly during long passages, even in light airs. The HH50 is a good example of this new generation of cruising speedsters.

Hudson Yacht Group is a production catamaran specialist with a large, modern yard in Xiamen, south-eastern China. It launched in 2012, partnering with well-known NZ builder Paul Hakes to initially produce a range of grand prix monohulls.

The business diversified, forming a partnership with French performance catamaran brand Gunboat to build some of its larger bluewater cruising models.

After that partnership ended, Hudson Yachts engaged the ubiquitous Morrelli and Melvin design house to launch its own fast cruising cat brand, HH Catamarans. The HH Catamarans range now has eight models from the 15.3-metre HH44 to the flagship 26.8-metre HH88.

2023 hh50 sc review 19

One of the latest HH models to arrive in Australia is the HH50, a 15.8-metre multihull available in OC (single-helm fibreglass and carbonfibre ocean cruising) and SC (dual-helm carbonfibre sports cruising) configurations.

The HH50's musclebound hull features the aesthetics of reverse bows with fine entries and tall curved topsides, cleverly offset by elongated windows and positive shear.

Production of the HH50 will soon move from Xiamen to a new purpose-built facility at Cebu in the Philippines.

Price and equipment

Our review boat is hull number six of the fully carbonfibre HH50 SC, costing around $US1.55 million ($A2.43 million) delivered.

Australian HH Catamarans dealership The Multihull Company delivered this boat to its Queensland owner earlier this year, leaving Gary, our test boat's owner and a seasoned northern Queensland cat sailor, highly impressed after upgrading from a Crowther 60.

The Multihull Company director Brent Vaughan says he has a number of orders for more HH50s.

The HH50 can come as an "Ocean Cruising" model featuring a fibreglass hull with mini-keels, or as a full carbonfibre “Sports Cruising” model with two aft helms, or a forward helm inside with tillers with bucket seats outside to enhance helm feel and race starts.

Accommodation is either three or four cabins with the port hull on the HH50 dedicated to the owner's suite.

2023 hh50 sc review 8

The slickness in these large contemporary cats comes from intelligent technology such as powerful electric winches for all running rigging, load cells to manage the stresses and even a drop-down bow thruster to help the HH50 shuffle in and out of tight spots.

Hybrid engines featuring an electric drive paired with a Beta diesel engine are also an option.

Other impressive specifications include deep 5.0-metre curved daggerboards for maximum upwind capability, a carbon mast, and high-aspect rudders for maximum control.

Hull and engineering

The HH50's carbonfibre hull is pre-impregnated with epoxy over a composite foam sandwich construction that is post-cured in an oven for maximum strength and stiffness.

The high-aspect spade rudders are carbonfibre, including the shafts, and connected to the twin steering wheels via Jefa linkages and gearboxes to give a direct feel. Stocks for the emergency rudder system are built into the swim platforms that extend from each hull.

The curved carbonfibre daggerboards are cleverly built into the outer side of the hull to maximise interior space and operate via an electric winch and line back to each helm.

2023 hh50 sc review 3

Rigging is based around a fixed, deck-stepped Marstrom tapered carbonfibre spar supported by Future Fibres ECthree carbon stays, and uses a Selden alloy boom. The stays have load cells on their bases that report stresses back to the helms.

Engine hatches behind each helm open to twin 45hp Beta Marine saildrives, and also provide easy access to the steering linkages and electrics.

A small 5.0kVA generator is in a vented foredeck compartment, and the HH50 is equipped with 1500 watts of solar panels on the coachroof.

The HH50 uses a CZone system to manage most of the catamaran's electrics and balance the demand between modes ranging from cruising to anchor and an almost complete shut-down while laid up at the marina.

The CZone system is designed to make fault-finding easy and includes manual overrides should it be needed.

Renewable power is via 1500 watts of solar panels on the coachroof and there's also a 5KVa generator, to run the washer/drawer in the owner's hull and the aircon.

Layout and accommodation

The aft cockpits of catamarans are a big selling point for cruising sailors, and the HH50 doesn't disappoint.

A sun bed on the starboard side has thick cushioning for comfortable seating or allows two to recline. Bimini skylights above let the rays in or block them when not needed.

Opposite is an alfresco dinette with a table for six.

A feature of the HH50 is the dual access to the helm stations. Both can be accessed via the cockpit or the side decks.

The symmetrical helm controls are easy to operate, with essential items such as digital shift and throttle controls and B&G Zeus chartplotters replicated on each.

All lines are controlled using Lewmar 65/55 electric winches with foot controls at each helm and locked on each side using banks of Spinlock jammers.

Sturdy carbon davits that extend over the transom hold an inflatable dinghy.

The HH50's interior is a pleasant blend of traditional dark walnut finish mixed with a contemporary open-plan layout that provides plenty of entertainment space when combined with the aft cockpit.

A U-shaped galley is aft on starboard with the navigation station diagonally opposite and forward on port. The galley has a generous workspace with fiddles to stop items placed on it sliding off if the large wake of a passing motor yacht upsets the calm, and plenty of under-bench storage.

The extensive equipment list includes four Vitrifrigo drawer fridge/freezers, a Miele electric three-burner electric hob, and a deep sink. A Spectra 400C watermaker helps with extending offshore cruising ability.

Large skylights flood the space with natural light while vertical bulkheads to each side use gently sloping forward-facing windows to maximise shade without compromising the great views.

A forward-facing window hatch opens to provide natural airflow. A dinette is opposite the aft galley, with another lounge bench forward.

Our review boat is the owner's version, featuring the owner's suite to port and two guest cabins in the starboard hull, with below decks accommodations accessed via stairs on each side of the saloon.

Again, the clean design philosophy has dictated a fuss-free finish throughout with wipe-down surfaces.

The owner's layout has a crawl-in queen bed aft with a bathroom forward and a lounge/study in between, with bench seating beside worktops.

The ensuite bathroom includes a large shower cubicle with a huge shower head that will keep the watermaker busy.

Other good points throughout this suite include large aft windows – perhaps even too large, given it's near the swim platform on each hull – and portlights with skylights providing natural airflow that helps with tropical cruising.

The starboard hull uses a grand entry comprising a central two-way cascading stairwell that faces a bulkhead containing twin heads with a single shower.

The forward cabin's three-quarter single bed benefits from the large hull volume to avoid stuffiness, while the aft cabin matches the owner's suite with a queen bed.

An escape hatch, essential in all large sailing cats and a CE certification requirement, is fitted to each hull should the HH50 ever invert.

On the water

After a day of sailing the HH50, I can clearly see the attraction.

The challenge I've found on boats like the HH50 is blending raw power with a sailable package that won't scare the living daylights out of owners and their families.

A drop-down bow thruster and the digital shift and throttle controls linked to the Beta saildrives made our departure from Sanctuary Cove drama-free.

Beyond the Coomera River estuary, the wind picked up, although it was hardly noticeable behind the wide perspex window of the bimini that also nicely shaded the B&G instruments.

Our best cruising speed from the turbocharged Beta engines and three-blade folding props was 8.0 knots at 2200rpm. HH Catamarans claims the 40hp engines have a range of around 540 nautical miles at 7.0 knots.

Heading out to sea into a 1.8-metre southerly swell, we prepared to hoist the mainsail. The hoist was easy as all halyards led back from the mast directly over the saloon to minimise friction, then to both helms.

This boat is optimised for two-handed use so the halyard is a one-person job using the electric Lewmar 65 and guided by lazy jacks.

Motor sailing seaward once clear of the breaking shoal water at the seaway, the HH50 was turned into a 15-knot southerly to unfurl the genoa into a beam reach; again a smooth operation.

The carbonfibre steering wheel needs only a light touch, and feedback from the spade rudders is instantaneous.

Lumpy windward conditions don't suit catamarans, even tricked-up ones, so the HH50 did well to keep some momentum between each large set hitting the tall nacelle.

The B&G instruments showed 8.5 knots SOG hard on the wind at 34 degrees apparent wind, in a fading 12.2 knot breeze – impressive given the conditions with the self-tacking jib.

This setup also made tacking easy, with only an easing of the mainsheet required to turn across the wind.

Each helm has all controls so there is no need to swap sides on a tack, but crossing sides could be made easier with an inboard step or a clear way across the transom to the other cockpit.

The only other job is those large daggerboards that need to be raised or lowered for each tack, via a button on each binnacle.

The fading breeze put an end to the windward leg of the test, so the helm was put down and the mainsheet eased before the gennaker was hoisted and unfurled. Its clew came all the way back to the stern.

In 9.9 knots of true wind, the HH50 logged an impressive 8.0 knots of boat speed at 131 degrees, very close to its polar chart figures.

The HH50 is not a sailing catamaran for novices. However, for the experienced performance cruising sailor who wants to cover big miles, the HH50's level of engineering and balance are superb.

But numbers aren't the only thing about this high-end multihull. The HH50 is also embued with an elegant design and a sophisticated fit and finish that enhances its extended cruising abilities.

For those who can handle it, those attributes make the HH50 the ideal bluewater cruising platform.

Carbon Construction

Carbon fibre construction equals a strong, very light, extremely rigid platform integral for safe and efficient sailing. Designed with short handed sailing in mind, the deck layout on the HH50 has been carefully configured with all sail controls at the helms to maximise ease of use.

Performance Cruising

Though simple to sail, the HH50 is far from subdued. ‘Raceboat in disguise’ technology abound, and equal to wind speed performance is the norm. After days or weeks of exhilarating offshore passage making, fully retractable curved daggerboard allow you to secure the best pot in the anchorage and explore the dreamy shallows.

hh50-synergy-to-edit-076

Saloon and Cockpit

The HH50 features a spacious general arrangement. The large saloon offers a generous sized galley to starboard with an island just outboard of centerline. Seating for six around a large dining table and a dedicated navigation station are to port. When at anchor the sail handling area easily converts to an a comfortable forward facing seating area. An attractive eyebrow around the cabin top adds to the aggressive styling but is very practical in creating much needed sun shade in the salon as well as creating a safety hand hold when walking the side decks. The aft cockpit is perfect for entertaining: a settee and table set the stage for dining al fresco, made complete by an integrated wet bar and barbecue.

Like in the larger HH models, the HH50 will have curved “C” daggerboards with optional push-button controlled line drivers. Fully retracted boards will yield a draft of 4.92 ft (1.5m), allowing the boat to comfortably navigate shallow waters.

hh catamarans hh50

E-Glass and Fixed Keels The main difference is in how she is built. HH use e-glass on this boat with carbon reinforcements in high load areas. The daggerboards have been switched for winged fixed keels and instead of a carbon composite mast, boom and rigging, she has alloy (there is an option to go carbon). The hull shape is the same, with an ample interior, and luxurious fittings.

This keeps the cost down and makes her more robust: she’s been designed with circumnavigating couples in mind who are looking for a boat that is simpler to sail short-handed and will take a knock or two. Instead of the twin helms on the HH50, the OC50 has a single helm station with all of the lines running back. This boat sits between the Kinetic KC54 and 50 foot cruising catamarans like the FP Saba 50

Many thanks to Multicats International, the European Agents for HH, and of course the owners of Seabbatical for showing us around the #1 hull and taking us out on a test sail.

A Performance Boat We have included this catamaran in our Performance Catamarans section, but bear in mind that HH also make a more highly tuned version. But this is still a fast boat with a powerful sail plan and a high end finish. If you dream of owning an HH catamaran but can’t stretch your budget to their 66 footer, now you have an option.

The SA/D ratio doesn´t hit the levels of a Looping 50 , (another fixed keel performance catamran) but it´s above average.

You can´t really call her a volume production boat. HH will be making around 4 of them a year. In terms of performance, we’d say she sits somewhere between an Outremer and a Nautitech. Read our Outremer 45 review if you are interested in boats in that category, but bear in mind the 51 is closer comparison.

  • She’s fast and comfortable. Those Morrelli & Melvin shaped hulls slip cleanly through the water and a lot of work has gone into distributing the weight in the optimum way. You can expect to be just below true wind speeds with the right sails up.
  • The price of an OC50 will be pitched around the same level as a Outremer 51 or a Catana 53. For the same money, you´ll get a high performance machine with a far superior level of finish. This is a luxury performance cat
  • The OC50 is a semi-custom boat. You can add or take away as much carbon as you like to hit your performance/cost sweet spot
  • This is a simpler boat for a couple to sail than the HH50. There are no daggerboards to worry about (just keels with winglets) and a single helm station. I wouldn’t call the OC50 a simple yacht to sail, but she’s been designed for a couple to handle. With a bit of practice.
  • The finish of this boat and the attention to details hit a very high level. Examples include davits that are custom built to your tender
  • I prefer the profile of the single helm station to the twin helms on the HH50. This is a pretty boat.
  • With fixed keels instead of daggerboards, you are going to lose some performance upwind, especially in lighter winds. Having said that, those winglets on the keels help the boat to point upwind pretty well, and when the wind picks up you won´t notice much difference.
  • With the use of e-glass to keep the cost down, this boat is heavier than a HH50 and that will affect her performance. I wouldn’t call this a slow boat though. We are talking relative, right?
  • I thought the saloon could do with more ventilation for a boat in this price point. The forward starboard window is pretty small, for example. I am guessing you can customise this.
  • The huge aft windows in the cabins make for a spectacular view, but I’d want more privacy personally. Having said that, the owners were still waiting for their aft blinds. I´d worry about big waves smacking into all of that glass on an ocean crossing, but there are washboards that fit into the top of the transom steps.
  • With that semi-raised helm, the boom is pretty high. That means the centre of effort of the mainsail is higher than other performance cats and it´s more difficult to get to your mainsail. We are not in flybridge boom height territory though.
  • You access the helm via the side deck which could leave you exposed in heavy weather. You can nip up from the starboard daybed in really rough weather if you don’t mind a bit of dirt on those fancy leather cushions.

hh catamarans hh50

With a few trade offs here and there that have had minimal impact on performance and a decent impact on ease of sailing, they have developed a catamaran that offers good performance and high levels of comfort without sailing to the extremes.

The  E-glass in the hull, deck, superstructure and interior paneling, saves cost compared with carbon. In highly loaded areas such as the cross beams, carbon is used to ensure a tough, rigid boat. The standard mast is aluminium and not carbon (although you can opt for the lighter material, but there is an associated cost of course).

According to the specs, the OC50 is around 1 tonne heavier than the HH50, but this difference can be reduced if you go for more carbon. The owners of Seabbatical assured me that he´d minimised the excess weight to around 500 kg with their carbon options.

hh catamarans hh50

Seat Up for Short-Handed Sailing All the reefing lines and sheets come back to two electric winches at the single helm, and your furling lines run back down the port side. You can lead the furling line back to the starboard cockpit winch under the helm station if you like, or just run it onto the cockpit winch to port.

Other sail options include a fractional reacher that is flown off the bowsprit, plus an spinnaker and storm jib (both optional).

The owner of the #1 hull has invested in a parasailor for downwind sailing. I´d love to see this up – this sail can be kept up from 4.5 kts – 20 kts apparent and 70 – 180 AWA. That should push Seabbatical along at a rate of knots!

At 13.2 tonnes lightships, the OC50 gets going quickly and cuts nicely through the water with those axe bows.

Unfortunately during our test sail we had very little wind, but the OC50 will approach true wind speeds in a breeze.

Living Space & Finish

This is where the OC50 puts some clear blue water between herself and the competition. The quality of the furnishings is superior to comparable cats in the same price range – they have tried to match the level of finish that you see in the HH line and in the main they have succeeded. She feels like a very spacious 50 footer with the sliding doors between the aft cockpit and the saloon open.

hh catamarans hh50

Forward amidships is another seating area with fridge and freezer drawers to starboard. And to port is a great looking corner navigation station with good visibility.

hh catamarans hh50

Happy Guests In the starboard hull, the 2 cabins have been cleverly split with their own steps down from the saloon. Each cabin has their own head and a shared “jack and jill” shower in between. It’s a clever use of the space and it feels big.

Storage Space

The 2 forepeaks in the boat give you lots of storage. These are customisable: on Seabbatical the owner has installed a dive compressor and scuba tank rack in one and left the other for sail storage.

How much does an HH OC50 cost? What’s the list price? This is heavily dependant on the options you go for and how much carbon you want on the boat. These are semi-custom catamarans, but to give you an idea, HH are pitching the OC50 at around the Outremer 51 or Catana 53 price range. So let’s say around €1.3 million would get you a pretty fantastic machine. The cost is considerably lower than an HH50.

Why No Daggerboards? I thought this was a Performance Cat? HH have made the decision to simplify the systems on the OC50 to make it easier for a couple to sail the boat over long distances. Fixed keels are less complex than boards and arguably safer on long cruises (in the event of a grounding for example). The winglets on the keels help the OC50 to point respectably into the wind. Studies have shown that the performance difference drops away when the wind picks up in any case: you will notice the biggest difference going upwind in light airs. But we would still call the OC50 a performance boat based on her Sail Area to Displacement ratios.

The HH50 is a clever design and I would think that the traditional performance cruising catamaran manufacturers are looking over their shoulder at this one. The single helm station works well for short handed sailors and arguably she looks sleeker than the HH50 from some angles.

She has all the looks of a Morrelli and Melvin speed cat, with the kind of finish you would expect from HH at a comparable price to the competition: a sturdy, blue-water, luxury semi-custom cruiser with a lower cost and build time.

Next up for HH? The OC56 – a bigger boat with a flybridge.

The Kaliningrad K-8 (R-8) (NATO reporting name AA-3 'Anab') is a medium-range air-to-air missile that was developed by the Soviet Union for interceptor aircraft use.

The K-8's development began in 1955, known as R-8 in service.

Like most Soviet air-to-air missiles, it was made with a choice of semi-active radar homing or infrared seeker heads. The original missile was compatible with the Uragan-5B radar. It was upgraded to R-8M standard in 1961, giving the SARH weapon the capability for head-on intercepts. In 1963 it was further upgraded to the R-8M1, making it compatible with the RP-11 Oriol-D radar of the Sukhoi Su-11 and Sukhoi Su-15 and Yakovlev Yak-28P. Subsequent development led in 1965 to R-8M2, with longer range and improved seekers, compatible with the upgraded RP-11 Oriol-M radar. The final variant, introduced from 1973, was the R-98M1 with better countermeasures resistance and longer range, matched to the Taifun-M radar of the Su-15TM and Yak-28PM interceptors.
