IPIXUNA 82' (24.9m) Nautor Swan Yacht Sold

Posted October 4, 2022 in Brokerage & New Build by Ashleigh King

Northrop & Johnson is delighted to announce the sale of the 82′ (24.9m) Nautor Swan yacht IPIXUNA by Yacht Broker Bill Titus, acting on behalf of the buyer. The yacht was last asking €1,850,000.

Built with a Nautor Swan pedigree in Italy, IPIXUNA boasts exquisite exterior designs by German Frers and traditional interior styling. The sailing yacht was launched in 2000 as an extended version of the Swan 80 hull. She is a safe, seaworthy sailing yacht that is easily handled and promises guests a comfortable voyage. IPIXUNA’s exterior deck spaces are uncluttered and designed for guests and crew to move about easily. IPIXUNA has benefitted from many upgrades through the years, most recently in 2021. The luxury yacht has successfully sailed the globe since her delivery, courtesy of her meticulous maintenance schedule and professional crew.

The sailing yacht’s classic Swan interior is finished with the highest quality materials boasting beautifully varnished teak, cozy soft furnishings and teak and holly floorboards. Her full-beam salon is filled with light and acts as the primary locale for guests to gather, relax and retreat from the deck area. The space offers an entertainment system, a dining table for six and a bar area. A nice-sized bookshelf is to port and can hold a substantial library. The sailing yacht’s exterior showcases an expansive deck with a welcoming cockpit for alfresco dining and lounging that can be shaded when needed. Her foredeck houses an AB Inflatable RIB tender.

IPIXUNA has been designed to comfortably accommodate six guests in three cabins and three crewmembers. The owner’s suite is full-beam and features a large queen-size bed offset to port. There is a dedicated office area with a desk and chair and a small vanity. Four large drawers under the bed and storage lockers offer plenty of room for guest belongings. An en-suite bathroom occupies the forward section of the cabin. IPIXUNA’s two additional cabins comprise a port-side cabin with a double bed and a starboard cabin with a double bed plus a Pullman.

Lachlan Murdoch's $30 million superyacht has arrived in Australia for the first time as he and the family drop anchor in Sydney and await the completion of their far pricier cruiser.

The News Corp co-chairman bought the classic fixer-upper earlier this year but has only just docked the vessel in Australian waters, keeping it at Rozelle Bay in the city, where Mr Murdoch, his wife Sarah and three children now live.

He bought the 42-metre Feadship yacht for the huge sum while he waits for his secretive latest purchase to be built, a 59.7m Royal Huisman sloop, believed to be worth £100million (A$175million).

The 1954 refurbished motor yacht, Istros, has accomodation for nine guests in five different cabins.

The boat also features crew quarters for up to ten staff.

On deck, the boat boasts a sofa and deck chairs, while further along the vessel is a dining table that caters to alfresco eating.

The sloop has been entirely remodelled, including a full overhaul of its interior, upgrades to the external fittings and gutting of the engine room.

It was little more than a rusting hulk when it was rescued from a Maltese port in 2015, before it was salvaged and rebuilt.

Dutch shipyard De Vries Lentsch delivered the yacht in the 1950s but Van Geest design made the interior upgrades in 'family oriented, sunny Scandinavian style'.

However, it was not all smooth sailing with financial difficulties stopping progress on the yacht until 2018.

The upgrades were then completed by Feadship in 2020.

Istros has won awards for its remodelling and rebuilding with many leasing the ship while she was on the charter market.

That was until Mr Murdoch snapped her up in 2021.

The boat joins an extensive Murdoch flotilla including the Sarissa, which they paid $30million for, but is now believed to be available for charter.

Lachlan Murdoch is an enthusiastic sailor, having raced his 24-metre sail yacht Swan 82, Ipixuna, at Hamilton Island in early 2021.

He also entered the Sydney to Hobart back in 1997.

Last year, the couple paid $38 million for a boat shed at Point Piper after relocating to Sydney to live at their Bellevue Hill compound, Le Manoir.

It was believed they would host a delayed 90th birthday celebration for family mogul Rupert Murdoch this year, however the News Corp chairman and CEO has now turned 91.

Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch now own properties in Sydney, Los Angeles and Colorado, as well as a $90 million Gulfstream G650 private jet.

Lachlan uses the private jet to regularly fly between the US and Australia for work.

The Murdochs have three children - sons Kalan Alexander, 17, Aidan Patrick, 15, and daughter Aerin Elisabeth, 11 - who all attend private schools across Sydney.

Previous reports have suggested it's not always been smooth sailing for the family of five.

Last year, sources claimed the family moved to Australia when the US political climate shifted after Joe Biden was elected the US president.

The pro-Republican family's children apparently experienced 'a rough' time, Nine newspapers reported.

donald-trump-yacht-trump-princess

From the archives: Inside Donald Trump’s lavish 86m superyacht Trump Princess

BOAT dives into the archives to tell the full story of how Donald Trump bought the 85.9-metre (282 foot) Benetti superyacht Nabila (now Kingdom 5KR ) for close to $30 million and transformed her into Trump Princess ...

“A certain level of quality.” That is the phrase that Donald Trump returns to again and again to explain just why he bought Adnan Khashoggi’s 86 metre yacht Nabila . And an explanation is needed.

After all, Trump doesn’t water-ski or go in for swimming in a big way, and he’s always tried to avoid the sun. As a matter of fact, he has never owned a big boat before. He doesn’t even particularly like boats. “I’m not into them,” he says with a shrug, “I’ve been on friends’ boats before and couldn’t get off fast enough.”

So why spend close to $30 million on a yacht? Trump will admit that she is an “incredible toy”, even “the ultimate toy”. But words like that make the whole venture seem frivolous, so he prefers to refer to the boat which he has re-named Trump Princess , as “a work of art.” And what makes her a work of art is, of course, the “level of quality”.

To really appreciate the level of quality, Trump says you have to see the interior. That is where Khashoggi lavished money with utter abandon. Trump points out, for example, the walls of the cabins covered in chamois leather and bird’s eye maple.

Bathrooms are done not in marble but in onyx – and not just any onyx either, but onyx hand-carved by the finest craftsmen in Italy. Donald Trump bought Trump Princess , he says, “because I was buying a great piece of art at a ridiculously low price”.

Unlike Trump, Adnan Khashoggi has always had a thing about boats. The arms dealer, who took advantage of connections with the Saudi royal family to amass a fortune worth around $3 billion at its peak, acquired his first yacht when he was 18 and traded up as his wealth increased.

In the 1970s Khashoggi owned two yachts and while these were impressive, neither made quite the naked assertion of fantastic wealth he required, so he commissioned the British designer Jon Bannenberg to design the most sumptuous, the most incredible yacht the world has seen.

“He wanted the best yacht in the world,” says Bannenberg, “and we achieved that at the time.” The vessel Bannenberg created cost $35 million to build, but Khashoggi also commissioned Italian designer Luigi Sturchio to produce the interior and that is believed to have cost more than the yacht itself.

“No-one really knows what she originally cost,” says Jonathan Beckett , CEO of Burgess , the broker that arranged the sale to Trump. Named Nabila , after Khashoggi’s only daughter, the vessel was launched in 1980. Insisting that she be totally self-contained, Khashoggi had included in the specification everything from a patisserie and three-chair hair salon to a screening room with an 800-film library and a hospital with an operating theatre.

There is accommodation for a crew of 52 people. To get to and from shore, there is a helicopter landing pad and a pair of nine metre tenders. Fuel tanks holding 618,256 litres of diesel give a maximum range of 8,500 nautical miles at the cruising speed of 17.5 knots. Three water-makers produce 45,000 litres of fresh water a day from the ocean and six mammoth refrigerators carry a three-month supply of food for 100 people.

Many of Khashoggi’s most lavish parties took place aboard Nabila , but the yacht was also an invaluable business instrument. Not only movie stars but also political leaders and diplomats were invited aboard. On one occasion five heads of state – including three kings – were entertained simultaneously.

Often, Nabila ’s guests were Arab princes as well as European and American businessmen of all descriptions. Ensconced in the various suites, they used the 150 telephones and the satellite communications system to arrange arms sales and commodities trades. When contracts were ready to be signed, the yacht could quickly slip into international waters, where sovereign restrictions on business transactions do not apply. On many occasions, several deals were conducted simultaneously, in different suites.

A tour of the entire yacht, which has five decks and some 100 separate areas, would take too long, but a description just of the owner’s suite  should be sufficient to give an idea of the exquisite luxury on board Trump Princess .

The bedroom occupies the full beam of the hull. It has a tortoiseshell ceiling, a three-metre-wide bed, and bedside remote controls for the entertainment centre, for room service, even for the curtains. It also has a secret exit.

From the bedroom, we head down a corridor past a mirrored dressing room and into Trump's bathroom, where the onyx floor tiles are carved in a sunburst pattern. To one side is a room with the owner’s barber chair. Next to that is the shower and sauna. The shower has 13 nozzles and is carved in the shape of a scallop shell from a single piece of onyx — a task that took a team of workers a year to complete.

From the bathroom we proceed into Trump’s television area, then into his large sitting area, panelled in the inevitable chamois leather. From there we take the owner’s private elevator (there is another one for guests and a third for crew) to his private sundeck .

An enclosed section houses the bar, pantry, video games, and another sauna and shower. Outside, behind bullet-proof glass, sits a circular swimming pool that measures 2.4 metres in diameter.

That may seem a bit small, but there is a water jet so you can swim all day against the current and never reach the other side. A hydraulic lift raises the sunbed high above anyone else on the boat, enabling the sunbather to bask in total privacy.

When Khashoggi’s empire began to crumble during the mid-1980s, he procured a loan for $50 million, putting up Nabila as collateral. When Khashoggi defaulted on his loan in 1987, a Swiss holding company took possession of the yacht. She was therefore placed in the hands of Burgess with instructions to dispose of the yacht quickly at an asking price of $50million.

In September 1987, almost as soon as he learned that Nabila was for sale, Donald Trump made a cash bid for the yacht. Burgess had already received two other offers, one of which was equal to that made by Trump, but subject to several conditions. Jonathan Beckett flew to New York and countered Trump’s offer with a proposal of $32million. Trump responded with $28million, and half an hour later he had agreed to pay $30million — for a yacht he had never boarded.

As soon as the news was broken, Beckett was suddenly deluged with higher offers from potential buyers who had been sitting on the fence. Meanwhile, Trump was arranging to pay less. He was contacted on behalf of Khashoggi, who was said to be upset that his daughter’s name would now be on a yacht belonging to someone else. Negotiations ensued and Trump agreed to rename the boat Trump Princess if the cost were reduced by about $1million. “He got an unbelievable deal, in retrospect,” says Beckett.

Trump then spent $8.5 million having the yacht refitted in the Netherlands by Amels who repainted the hull, rebuilt the main engines and replaced 320 metres of chamois leather. One of the more garish cabins became the children’s room and the hair salon a cloakroom.

Renamed Trump Princess , the yacht, which Trump says will cost about $2.5 million a year to operate, set sail from the Azores in June 1988 and arrived in New York on July 4 in time for the huge party the Trumps threw on it that night.

In addition to private cruising with his family, Trump, like Khashoggi, uses Trump Princess as a business instrument — though in a somewhat different fashion. Trump Princess spends the summer months cruising the East Coast from her base in Atlantic City, where she docks at the marina in full view of Trump’s Castle Hotel. Trump makes the boat available for selected charities and “very high rollers who spend millions of dollars a year in the casinos”.

“There is a whole market there,” Trump explains. “While I was building Farley Marina, I was trying to get the boat, because I knew that she would blow everybody’s mind. She would become a spectacle.”

But that is what Trump Princess has been all along — a spectacular statement of astronomic wealth, a massive piece of equipment designed to arouse envy in those who behold it. Khashoggi had stipulated that the boat be huge enough to intimidate even the owners of the big yachts — and it does.

A few years ago, a friend of Trump’s was at the helm of his own very large yacht in the Mediterranean — and feeling quite proud — when Nabila roared by, practically swamping him. “He said it gave him a total inferiority complex,” Trump says. And that, no doubt, is another reason Trump bought her.

Classic Sailing Yacht Iduna

- ex: highland prince - feadship -.

asking price €3,900,000.— euro

Available throughout the Mediterranean region, the yacht offers an authentic nautical atmosphere, combining classic splendour with 21st-century standards of comfort. Iduna is a classified yacht d’époque and can also be chartered during the classic regattas.

Originally launched in 1939 by Royal De Vries, Iduna remained the largest Feadship built until 1960. Her three-year rebuild was carried out in the purpose-built Classic Yacht Darsena yard in Italy. This is the same multinational team that was responsible for the stunning restoration of the 1920 gaff cutter Lulworth. Iduna's interior echoes the golden age of yachting, combining mahogany and teak with subtle fabrics and enormous attention to detail. Modern conveniences such as air-conditioning and an audiovisual entertainment system are subtly incorporated. The owner’s stateroom is the height of sophistication, with a Queen-size bed and ensuite bathroom. Other accommodation includes an ensuite guest double, an ensuite guest twin and two large cabins for four crew members. There are two spacious lounges, one on the lower deck and another in the wheelhouse. Iduna’s extensive deck spaces offer exceptional options for al fresco dining and entertainment, and the yacht has a good selection of water sports toys.

HISTORY - IDUNA -

Iduna was built by De Vries yard in Aalsmeer and designed by Henri de Voogt - both founder members of Feadship in 1949, which would become the number one builders of luxury yachts in the world.

In addition to having good taste, Van Ommeren's choice of Holland’s most famous naval architect was made easy because he was married to Henri de Voogt's aunt Wilhelmina. Having built many great racing boats during the 1920s, De Voogt earned global fame designing yachts for royalty, including Ramsar for the Shah of Persia and Piet Hein for the future Dutch queen Juliana. Ramsar was also built by De Vries, which went on to build many of the world's most famous superyachts.

World War II meant Van Ommeren only had a few weeks sailing on Iduna. With Holland under German occupation, the boat was moored in Warmond and gave refuge to four Dutch ladies during the freezing cold hunger winter of 1944-1945. After Van Ommeren passed away in 1945, the De Voogt family sailed Iduna for several years. Frits de Voogt, son of Henri de Voogt and one of the leaders of the Feadship organisation until his retirement in 1993, kept the logbook from these years and handed it over to Iduna's owner half a century later.

For most of the next five decades, she was a treasured boat loved by a series of multinational owners.

In 1949, Iduna was sold to a Portuguese nobleman. His two-decade stewardship included changing her from a gaff ketch to a Bermudian ketch during a refit in 1960 at De Vries.

In 1970, the boat was sold to a consortium of owners in England. The following owners were an Italian family (1975), the Roche family from Switzerland (1977) and a commissioner from the Sûreté National (1983). In 1987 Iduna was bought by an Englishmen who renamed her Highland Prince (after his whisky company). Only when Iduna was brought by another owner to Antibes in 1995 did she begin her slide into disrepair. Just as it looked as if she was destined for the scrap yard, a man from Holland came to the rescue.

Anchored in an Antibes marina, Iduna would have fallen apart if it had not been for the valiant efforts of the couple living onboard. Giuseppe and Elisabetta Longo had been hired to keep the boat seaworthy but went much further in their - often self-financed - attempts to preserve Iduna's integrity.

In the summer of 1999, an adventurous Dutchman with a love of history agreed to buy and take on the restoration of this piece of nautical history. Johan J.M. van den Bruele had only owned motoryachts previously and agreed to purchase Iduna so long as the Longo's would lead the restoration project. Thus began a partnership that would not only lead to the rebuild of Iduna but also the world's largest gaff cutter Lulworth.

Opening the purpose-built Classic Yacht Darsena yard in Viareggio, dedicated craftsmen from the UK, US, South Africa, Australia, Poland and elsewhere joined the team in Italy to start Iduna's restoration. It would require far more effort, time and money than anyone had foreseen

BUILD (In regards to size, layout and features, why was she built that way?

What is the model name? What type of yacht is she, e.g. ‘tri-deck motor yacht’, ‘performance/world cruiser’?):

The motorsailer Iduna at 30.48m - the largest pre-war yacht built at De Vries was launched in June 1939. She followed hard on the heels of the equally impressive 28.80m motoryacht Sultan, delivered to the Dutch East Indies in March. These projects completed a remarkable decade for the De Vries family, as since the 1930s, building in steel hull had become second nature.

REFIT / Rebuilt

In the summer of 1999, an adventurous Dutchman with a love of history agreed to buy and take on the restoration of this piece of nautical history. He agreed to purchase Iduna so long as the Longo's would lead the restoration project.

It would require far more effort, time and money than anyone had foreseen.

From refit to rebuild

Iduna was sailed from France to the Italian port of Viareggio in September 1999. The skeleton crew onboard only found out later how close they came to disaster. During her 24-hour voyage, the boat had been sailing on a hull virtually no thicker than a film of paint such was the damage below the leaking portholes.

This was one of many setbacks that confronted the newly formed team as it became clear that Iduna required much more than a refit... She needed a complete rebuild. The initial expectation had been that the project would involve new decks, an upgraded interior and a fresh paint job. However, features such as the teak decks were found to be beyond repair and half the plating for the steel hull needed replacing.

The owner was later asked if he realised how much work was going to be involved. "Certainly not," he replied. "I thought we were talking about new decks, an upgraded interior and a fresh paint job but there was much more to do than that. In essence, we went from a refit to rebuilding the entire boat. This wasn't a sudden decision: As the boat was being dismantled, there was a time when I considered simply selling off what could be sold and scraping the rest. But the team was so motivated I didn't have the heart to pull the plug."

And thus began one of the most dedicated great yacht rebuilds of our time.

EXTERIOR STYLE/FEATURES

As you walk across the passerelle and step onto Iduna's stern, you'll be immediately impressed by the sexy sheer of her long flat deck. The expansive teak planking curves forward in a distinctive style and shape that exudes 'classic'. The materials add to the ambience - the nickel, aluminium bronze, stainless steel, leather, varnished wood and sails all have a singular look and feel.

You may also feel yourself drifting back in time as you remember that others have stood on this deck before, facing up to the elements and relishing every rain-soaked moment of it. The fact that so many original features have been preserved and restored helps make Iduna so historically compelling.

The deck is uncannily close to the way she looked back in 1939. Original features include the main mast, skylights, deck saloon, compass, anchor winch and steering wheel. Iduna’s teak deck was laid in the traditional way with a planking pattern that follows the old to the millimetre. All replica fittings have a traditional bronze look, designed and cast to look completely authentic.

From the helm you can oversee the rigging (made by Harry Spencer of Cowes) and classically coloured Ratsey & Lapthorne sails. With its fold-down captain's seat and ample space for others to enjoy the panoramic views, the helm is a very popular spot. There is even a niche built into the dashboard to hold your drink and cigar!

The interior

Walking down the staircase from Iduna's deckhouse is like stepping back in time to the golden age of yachting. Although the entire interior is brand new, the rebuild brief was to create the appearance of a boat that had been immaculately kept for 65 years. And boy did they succeed. All the materials chosen have a vintage look, including even panels with the odd knot or tasteful scratch.

The decorative scheme matches the authentic mood. Restrained furniture fabrics and understated cream carpeting create an air of calm, leaving supplementary features such as the cushions and artwork to introduce brightness and colour. The attention to detail is extraordinary: From the door handles and hinges to the porthole basins and lighting, design and function are in total harmony.

Cherrywood is used to great effect throughout the interior, which includes an owner's stateroom, guest double with ensuite bathroom, an ensuite guest twin, plus two large cabins for four crew members with a spacious bathroom, galley and crew mess. There is also a lovely lounge area, which offers another place for fine dining in addition to the deckhouse.

Quality in all things, with all new machinery being of the highest calibre. The finest equipment has been installed in the technical spaces and galley alike.

Modern conveniences to ensure comfort, while never being obtrusive on the classic atmosphere. You can easily plug in a laptop on Iduna… If you know where to find the plug!

The De Vries yard provided the original plans and specifications, plus a wealth of photographs that helped ensure Iduna's refit was as authentic as possible. And experts from around the world were called in to meet the exacting brief...
