Charles´s favourite yacht in Majorca...

latsis family yachts

The Alexander docked in Palma yesterday.

One of the world's largest private super yachts Alexander sailed into Palma yesterday to pick up stores and refuel. The 397 foot Alexander is one of Prince Charles's favourite yachts, bar the now retired Royal yacht Britannia. The Prince and late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana, used the yacht in 1992 for a second honeymoon. The Prince took his sons William and Harry on a Greek cruise, accompanied by the Palmer Tomkinsons, aboard Alexander in 1994 and 1996. The Prince of Wales has since used Alexander for a Mediterranean cruise accompanied by Camilla Barker-Bowles, however when she sailed in to Palma yesterday, only the crew were on board -- no royal guests. Alexander was named after Alexander the Great and is owned by the Latsis Corporation which was founded by the 86 year-old John Latsis. Built in 1976 as a cruise ship, Latsis, whose fortune came from shipping and refining, bought the cruise ship Regina Maris in 1985 after making a killing in the wake of the Iranian revolution, which caused oil prices to rocket, in 1979. Latsis had her converted into a yacht by her original builders, after which she sailed into the newly opened IYCA in Antibes in August 1986. The Latsis family, which owns three other smaller yachts, used her extensively for entertaining and she has played host to some illustrious guests over the years. Based at the Latsis Corporation's refineries south of Athens, Alexander usually cruises the Greek Islands as well as making an annual trip to the French Riviera. The luxury yacht has been gradually upgraded over the years and Latsis, once a major financial backer of the Tory party, had a huge “A” painted on the side of her funnel in the early 90*s.
