Pegasus 50 review: the best 50ft yacht you haven’t heard of?

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 11, 2024

Mixing new and proven ideas, the Pegasus 50 is a short-handed fast bluewater yacht with a marked difference, as Toby Hodges discovers on a two-day test sail

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Three towering masts pierce the skyline off Trieste, where the impounded Sailing Yacht A lies forlorn at anchor like a crippled leviathan. The Russian-owned Philippe Starck design makes a fittingly stark reminder of how going so big has its drawbacks – never could the now shackled hulk, an empty floating metropolis, be more evidently impractical and I can’t help but think it makes for a neat contrast when viewed from the Pegasus 50 as we sail out of the pretty Slovenian town of Izola nearby.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not calling a €1m Pegasus 50 simple, but it is designed particularly well to manage easily short-handed, and is notably different to most other monohulls, particularly in layout. It’s also a design typically chosen so far by ‘downscalers’, as Pegasus co-founder Miha Breskvar describes them – those who’ve previously had larger yachts and become put off by their complexity or need for crew.

If you find the Pegasus 50 design faintly reminiscent, it’s from the hand of Marko Paš, who (with J&J) was responsible for developing the Shipman carbon cruiser designs around 20 years ago. You might notice influences in the Pegasus’s superstructures, cockpit and galley layout.

The Pegasus 50 is a powerful-looking yacht. The large coachroof runs into the arch and hardtop dodger protecting the deep cockpit. The general layout is also quite different, making you question assumed needs. For instance, in my house the kitchen and living room are larger than my bedroom, and rightly so I feel, yet that’s rarely the case on today’s yachts which typically have suites for master cabins.

Here, the Pegasus gives the bigger proportion of space to the cockpit, saloon and galley, and boasts a superb amount of stowage space – prime considerations for bluewater cruising .

The Pegasus 50 has an individual look, and despite the practicality of the hard dodger it won’t appeal to all. Equally, the pinhead mainsail and raked stem seem a little old-fashioned now, but ocean cruisers may prefer the practical gains here over current style fads.

I was taken with the design from when it first came to light in 2020 and have waited some time to sail it in testing conditions. In the end the two days and nights we had aboard in March were benign, with calm seas and light winds. I was about to add ‘unfortunately’ there, but what if such a yacht, with its easily managed sail plan, pilot station and capacious stowage, a design that ticks so many boxes for long-term cruising, could also deliver engaging sailing in such conditions. What if…

Armed for light wind

On both mornings, we left Izola’s marina once the first ripples began to disturb the glassy Adriatic. I found docking and manoeuvring simple, intuitive, and reassuring, while setting and handling sails is easily done from the cockpit. You quickly reach an engaging sailing mode. The enjoyment levels obviously rise with the breeze, but even in the lighter single-figure winds the Pegasus has the sail power and slipperiness to make the experience rewarding.

pegasus 50 yacht review

Power reaching. Mainsheet is out of harm’s way on the roof and lines are led aft – this means lots of line tails to manage, but there are useful deep bins below the benches and helm seats. Photo: Samo Vidic

We averaged 6 knots in 8-8.5 with the genoa, tacking through 80-85°. But we predominantly sailed with the Code 0 in these conditions for the best speeds and enjoyment, as it helped us to almost match the single-figure winds fetching. The Pegasus 50 really comes alive once the breeze is into double figures, where we averaged 8.5-9 knots in 12-13 knots.

Not that you want or have to watch the numbers. Helming is a pleasure, with only a finger needed on the wheel. The twin rudders give plenty of control and the feeling is direct, thanks to minimal steering linkage (a marked difference over most centre cockpit designs). This Jefa system connects quadrants with a rod, so if you lose steering on one side you can use the other. It’s also light work for an autopilot.

XC47 review: is this the best bluewater cruiser ever?

We’re close-hauled in 7-10 knots of true wind, making 6-6.5 knots of boat speed, with the helm beautifully balanced and…

We enjoyed beautiful, early spring sailing, largely to ourselves. Once the breeze nudges into the teens, you get a nice sprinkling of weather helm. I really enjoy helming right from the aft quarters – granted it may be different with a large following sea, and I would rather not sit next to a loaded snatch block and aft winch.

That said, it’s easy enough to lead the sheets to the winches in front of the wheels. There are blind spots from here, but you learn to move around to check sightlines (plus the navstation has a view out over the foredeck). Adding the cushions to the helm seats also helps by providing some elevation. These cockpit cushions are a good fit and comfortable.

The sail plan provides plenty of choice to get the most out of the boat, and to reduce sail most effectively and efficiently. As standard, the Pegasus 50 comes with main, staysail, genoa, and even a gennaker, while most choose a Code sail too. The self-tacking staysail is particularly useful when the wind is up, and can fill the slot between the main and reaching sail.

The Pegasus is well set up for short-handing. Indeed, the owner of the third hull sailed it solo in the Ostar – which he won – before he then sailed around Africa, the wrong way, alone! We tested hull number six, which was 14 months old and had already sailed 10,000 miles.

Secret weapon?

A reason for feeling like it was sailing on rails comes from what’s beneath the Pegasus 50’s hull. Paš favours a tandem keel with twin centreline fins connected by a bulb, which he calculates gives better directional stability, and less wetted surface for a low centre of gravity. He found it helps reduce leeway and brings better performance for its weight, while allowing the twin rudders to be kept relatively small.

A fixed 600W hydrogenerator is sited slightly offset from this keel. Once sailing at over 7 knots you can hear it vibrating, but there is the comfort that it’s putting a healthy 7A+ at 24V into your battery bank. Pegasus also offers an electric hybrid option, with twin Oceanvolt 15kW drives (a €150,000 upgrade for the drives, genset, batteries, extra solar etc).

This brings us to pricing, a subject that deserves spotlighting. Unusually the standard price is for a phenomenally well-equipped boat, which includes the carbon mast, Hydranet sails, electric winches, solar, watermaker, induction cooking, washing machine, B&G instruments, a gimballed settee, and an electric telescopic table! That’s everything on the test boat except the Code 0. Rarely have I come across a yacht that offers so much included in the price – around €200,000 of typical ‘options’.

“If you are using the boat as much as our clients do, you want to have all this stuff included,” Breskvar reasons, adding how it makes more sense to install it all from the outset, including the associated electric and plumbing runs. Keep scanning the specs list and you’ll note the dinghy and its Torqeedo outboard, bed linen, cutlery and crockery, tools, a vacuum cleaner etc are all included. It also helps you appreciate how all the stowage spaces have been optimised so this kit doesn’t fly around at sea.

Comfort on passage

The Pegasus 50 is designed for passagemaking in comfort and safety. The ease with which you can get around the boat is notable. The protected cockpit is superb, with a big fixed table and seats with proper high backrests. It links via a sliding door to the interior, which includes a pilot station and that gimballing settee to reduce fatigue.

The arch is in full composite, made in one piece. The fabric central bimini section rolls away, cabriolet style, and the windscreen includes sliding glass sections for ventilation. Pegasus also has a solid bimini version, which incorporates extra solar panels (716W as standard on the coachroof) and a Starlink marine antenna – a consideration most large/super yachts still don’t have designed in. The cockpit can also be fully enclosed to keep cushions dry.

Remembering there is no accommodation space aft or below the cockpit helps you appreciate the abundant stowage that the deep technical cockpit lockers bring These are intelligibly laid out with electrics to starboard, including AC and DC distribution, genverter etc, and plumbing such as watermaker, pumps and compressors to port.

The philosophy here is that easy access promotes proper maintenance. It also keeps the engine and all noisy items well insulated away from the interior.

pegasus 50 yacht review

Light and airy interior. Photo: Samo Vidic

These lockers have long rails for hanging warps and fenders and they also include large panels into the engine bay which, combined with the cockpit hatch (the table hinges out of the way aft), provides almost unhindered access to the engine and genset.

Pegasus has conceived neat solutions aft, using the composite gangplank as an aft bench to enclose the top of the transom. The aft winches double up well as mooring winches for getting tension on stern lines. And, when lowered via a simple purchase system, the large swim platform also helps you appreciate the long, low single-level cockpit. The garage can fit a 2.5m inflatable dinghy and is separated from the technical lockers by a watertight bulkhead.

Windows are all in tempered glass, including the offset companionway door which features a safety lock for when heeling and helps keep the cockpit connected with the interior. Here, the layout is refreshingly different, with the accommodation all forward of the saloon’s main bulkhead in two or three cabins.

I like the U-shape galley configuration and its stainless steel finish which makes so much sense on a yacht. It’s only one step down, at eye level to those seated in the cockpit. There’s plenty of natural light, plus ventilation through the large sliding door. Should you run out of worksurface, you can hinge the pilot seat forward to reveal more, above an extra fridge or freezer.

pegasus 50 yacht review

Practical stainless steel finish to the galley. Photo: Samo Vidic

I also appreciate the practicality of the stowage, including the bespoke cutlery drawers and the crockery and glassware cabinets. Opposite, the saloon is light and bright.

While a gimballing settee may seem gimmicky, the concept grew on me. As it’s all in carbon it only weighs 40kg and uses an electric actuator on a ram so there is little extra complexity. At the push of a button it cants 10° either way, which could make a difference to those who get seasick or are spending days on one tack. The table lowers to fill in, the outboard backrest then folds over to fill this section and create a massive bed. The result is a great den – indeed our photographer, Samo, confirmed that his kids happily played cards there while they sailed in 30 knots.

The gloss panel at the forward end of the saloon is like a car’s dashboard, with a smart Simarine switchboard hidden beneath. The surrounding leather stitching is a bold style feature –the upholstery and veneers are all customisable to a certain extent.

Accommodation is comparatively compact but practical in the owner’s cabin. Photo: Samo Vidic

A different view

The pilot station works brilliantly. A 27in screen in the navstation shows B&G data, doubles as a computer display, and has a swivel mount for use as a TV that you can view from the saloon. The seat gives a prime protected place to sit a night watch with views over the foredeck, but can also be used for chart or office work. And with an angled cushion as a backrest, you can sit side-on to rest or converse with those in the saloon or galley. There is a hatch above for ventilation and viewing sails, and a deep pilotbook shelf outboard.

Although just two shallow steps down, it feels comparatively low and slightly cramped going forward. The accommodation starts with an ideal pilotberth to port. The headboard for this and the master cabin to starboard are in line with the mast base, in the heart of the yacht and area of least pitching. Stowage here is excellent, but headroom is only around 6ft 1in.

Pullman bunks can be chosen here instead, or the space given over to a two-cabin version, with a full beam central master cabin including a large shower compartment. In the three cabin/berth test boat, this master cabin can be configured as a twin or double, as the beds are on tracks so can be joined. However, it is of modest size and stowage is limited – long-term cruisers would need to use other areas for clothes too. The en-suite with its wet heads shower area also feels relatively compact in this format.

pegasus 50 yacht review

Excellent access to the well insulated engine bay through the cockpit sole and well laid-out technical lockers. Photo: Samo Vidic

While the passageway forward is seaworthy and boasts large lockers, it’s low and the doorways are narrow. To port is a shower, with washing machine and rail, which makes a useful space for wet hanging, but there’s no hatch so it’s dark and relies on a vent. The heads further forward is much brighter. Headroom then drops again in the forward cabin, where it’s more purposeful than luxe, with a V-berth and some stowage, but few frills.

The 50 has an impressive composite build, including Vinylester hull and PVC core, and with deck, inner structure and structural stiffeners all in carbon fibre.

The outer skin is in glass, which the yard considers less vulnerable and easier to repair. Weight is kept central and low including the tanks.

The hulls are laminated across the border in Italy, before being fitted out in Pegasus’s yard, one hour inland from Izola in the mountains. Building boats here is normal in Slovenia, says Breskvar, citing Elan and Seaway as examples. Thus far owners have come from all over the world with hull number 10 currently on its way to the US. A 66ft Pegasus is in engineering phase, again designed for short-handed use.

“We have no dealers, no brand presence, no history, and we’re Slovenian so we can’t compete if we just bring the same thing as everyone else”, thinks Breskvar, who, with Paš, is one of three partners who established Pegasus five years ago. “After 30 years of sailing this is the boat we built for ourselves – for comfortable, enjoyable cruising.”

I increasingly turn a keen eye to multihulls for their social and stowage spaces, yet here we have much of that. Stash the surfboards under the aft bench, sails in the forepeak, bikes and toys in the tech lockers and garage and off you go! The modest freeboard and layout reduces accommodation volume compared to many modern cruising yachts. And the Pegasus is still a lot of money – though a substantial amount is included for that price. Maybe, its bold colourways and detailing won’t be to everyone’s taste. But this is one of very few new boats I’ve stepped aboard that I’d be happy taking off cruising straight away. The P50 makes you feel comfortable and puts you at ease instantly. And, crucially, it’s rewarding, even in light breezes that other bluewater cruisers may struggle to sail in. It’s also easy to change through the gears, which you’ll need to do keenly with its generous sail area, and it has a superb cockpit to protect its crew. There’s a lot to get excited about – rarely have I thought about a yacht so much after a test sail. ‘Pegasus’ was named after the mythological horse with wings as it’s strong, durable and can take flight. Fitting, then, that photographer for the test, Samo Vidic, is a regular for Red Bull extreme sports – as this bright red bull we sailed proved, it can indeed give you wings.

pegasus 50 yacht review

A cleverly designed offshore cruiser that has an interior layout for all kinds of sailing

The Pegasus 50 is built in Slovenia and designed by Marine Designs. This is not a new yard. It has produced many yachts and has recently started to build in carbon fiber. I can’t find any mention in the material about whether this design will be built in carbon, but I will say that I have seen few promotional packets more complete and better organized than this one. I don’t have hull lines and I don’t have structural specs but I sure have just about everything else. It’s a pleasure to review a boat when I have this much accurate material to work with.

pegasus 50 yacht review

This is a production cruising boat project with enough options to keep just about everyone happy. I admire the company’s unique approach to the styling and details.

Let’s start with the hull. This is a light boat. If I use the operational displacement of 29,480 pounds, I get a D/L of 132. There are figures for a dry displacement and a loaded displacement. The L/B is 3.09 but the beam is not carried aft to the degree we see in so many new boats today. There are twin rudders. Overhangs are minimal but there is some rake to the bow.

The keel is interesting. This is called a “tandem keel,” (thank you Alan Andrews) and was first seen in the early 1990s and had been tried on a Kiwi America’s Cup boat without success. The challenge with this configuration is to determine just how much slot between the fins you need compared to the aspect ratio of the fins. Think of it like one boat trying to sail directly behind another boat. The aft fin can be gasping for clean flow in the turbulence of the forward fin. In this case the slot is relatively small compared to the planform of the fins. But I trust the designers have done their homework on this. The benefit of this type of keel is that it spreads the keel out over a long section of the hull to aid in absorbing grounding loads. Again we see the bulb protruding forward of the fin making a very effective kelp grabber. Standard draft is 7 feet 6 inches.

The builder has provided drawings for five interior layouts: Family, Friends, Guest, Crew and Business. They all share the same raised saloon and galley geometry. They share the same forward double heads. But forward of the raised saloon you can have a variety of combinations of single berths and double berths. For the Business layout one stateroom becomes an office. For the Crew layout the fo’c’sle becomes a V-berth cabin. All the layouts work very well. I love the big galley in the raised saloon. The dinette to starboard is large as is the raised nav station. The cockpit with its hard top cover will work like an extension of the saloon due to the unique angled companionway.

Some clever thinking went into this design. The windshield and hard top are very artfully designed. There is a dinghy garage aft and a fold-down boarding platform. The cockpit features berth sized settees port and starboard. Solar panels are mounted on the hard top. I’m not sure but it looks to me like the big windows in the front of the dodger can be opened. Below the cockpit are “technical rooms” for machinery and electrical components.

The rig is a two swept-spreader type with an inner forestay for a staysail in heavy air. Both working genoa and staysail are on furling gear. Genoa furling is below deck. The mainsail sheets to the “Targa” bar on the hardtop and then goes forward and then back aft with other lines from the mast. Genoa tracks are on the toerail and the staysail tracks are just outboard of the mast. The side decks are clear.

It’s fun to get a design to review that shows some original thinking. I look forward to seeing hull No. 1 launched.  This will be the owner’s third boat from this Slovenian yard. That tells you something.

LOA 49’ 2”; LWL 46’4”; Beam 15’10”; Draft 7’6”; Displ. 29,500 lb.; Ballast 10,748 lb.; Sail area 1,453 square feet; L/B 3.09; D/L 132; Fuel 119 gal.; Water 138 gal.; Auxiliary 75-hp.

Cruising Compass

Pegasus 50 is a Pure Blue Water Cruiser

by George Day

Every now and then a boat comes along that is a kind of epitome of what a blue water cruising boat should be. And, often, these boats are amalgams of a designer’s deep experience blended with thoughtful input from cruising sailors who have put many thousands of miles on their own boats and who know what really works and what doesn’t.

The Pegasus 50 is just such a boat. Her Slovenian designers and builders have built hundreds of high-tech, modern cruising boats. In particular, they are the builders of the Shipman line of high-end cruisers, boats that have made more than 30 circumnavigations. Their owners talked; Pegasus listed.

The 50 is built around four essential concepts. First, the boat has to be built for ultimate safety in all the conditions you’ll meet sailing around the world and visiting high latitudes.

Second the boat has to offer her crew comfort, accommodations and a cockpit that will make a fine and efficient home for long-term living aboard, particularly for a couple.

Third, the fit and finish has to exude a certain understated luxury in true yacht style while at the same time her onboard systems have to be arranged and installed in an impeccable and seaman-like fashion.

Last but not least, the 50 has to offer her owners sailing performance above and beyond the average. And, the keels, rudders and rig have to combine for ease of handling for a couple and raw sailing power that will allow them to make fast passages.

pegasus 50 yacht review

You’ll note that the 50 has a tall carbon rig with a large fully-battened mainsail that flakes into a boom packmounted on wide boom brackets. Lowering this big sail is a cinch. Forward it has a self-tacking, 80% jib, a 100% genoa and a bowsprit from which can be flown a Code Zero or an asymmetrical spinnaker. This all spells ease of handling and plenty of horsepower.

Under the water, the 50 has a tandem wing keel that has a very low center of gravity for stability and the extra upwind lift of the tandem design. Twin rudders are essential because of the 50’s broad transom. In a good blow downwind, it will steer like she’s on rails and will always be easy on the autopilot.

The cockpit has a dinghy garage built into the transom plus two large “technical lockers” under the bench seats. One locker is for all the “wet” stuff like the water pumps, manifolds, water maker, filters and so forth. The other “dry” lock is for all of the electrical equipment and electronics that do not mix well with the wet, salty environment of the sea. The engine compartment under the cockpit floor can be accessed through side hatches in each locker.

The centerline cockpit table has a life-raft compartment in its aft end and a cockpit fridge in the forward end. The entire table can fold backwards on a hinge to reveal to tops of the engine and generator. Not only is this feature useful for regular maintenance, it also means you can hoist the engine right out of the boat for a major overhaul. You need to have been in the cruising game for a while to realize how important this feature can be.

pegasus 50 yacht review

LIVING ABOARD

On a cruising boat, you spend most of your time in the cockpit and want to be safe and protected from the elements in all conditions.  So, a rigid dodger and a hard top are features you can really appreciate.  Just think about rainy night watches.

But, being out in the open air is also a true pleasure of the cruising life, so the cockpit structure has open sides that can be closed off with isinglass panels and a retractable sun roof down the middle of the hard top. On starry nights, you can be out of the wind but still watch the planets coursing by.

The cockpit joins the saloon down two steps and the two spaces can be linked by opening the sliding glass door between them.  This catamaran-like design really appeals to crews sharing the galley and cockpit duties at sea.

The forward third of the 50 has the sleeping cabins and heads with a decided emphasis on creating a large and commodious master suite. For a couple planning to move aboard for years at a time, a bedroom is a must. And guest cabins are important, too.

But, this area of the 50 can be built to any owner’s unique specs, so each 50 is slightly different. And, that makes them special.

BLUE WATER READY

The new Pegasus 50 could make a fine coastal cruising boat. But that is not what she was conceived, designed and built for. No, the 50 is a blue water machine that will be an amazing home and a platform for exploring the farthest corners of your dreams and the remotest coves of your adventurous spirit.

The 50 comes fully equipped with everything from sails, electronics, genset, watermaker, and AC right on down to the cutlery and China. All you need is your seabag and groceries.

At just over a million dollars, the Pegasus 50 falls in line with a lot of semi-production luxury cruising boats in this size range. But she will sail rings around most of them. Two hundred mile-days, here we come.

"Racing with Oceanvolt – winning the Ostar 2022 (original single-handed transatlantic race) across the North Atlantic – from Plymouth to Newport with Lifgun . I had plenty of questions beforehand this race, one question was always the drag of the two feathering props during racing. Regeneration was allowing me to take on less fuel (which means less weight) for the race, the system proven to be reliable and trustworthy during that hardcore race. The ongoing improvements of the software for the ServoProps is making the whole package every year better without doing changes on the physical installation. Very pleased after over 12’000 miles sailing with Oceanvolt propulsion! It’s cool to regenerate energy even at 48 knots of wind" – Owner of the Pegasus 50 hull #3

What makes the Pegasus 50 hull #3 "Lifgun" special is that its regular diesel motor system has been replaced with two Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 at the factory making it a totally self-sufficient cruiser!

"The main advantage of the electric propulsion system in my point of view is that you can gain electricity when you sail. So it is actually the opposite of a traditional propulsion system, instead of consuming electricity you are actually generating it. My experience with sailing is that energy is key. As long as you have energy you have an autopilot which is working, a watermaker which is working and you can watch movies. That is civilisation, independence and freedom. All the luxury is based on energy. When I am sailing I always have in excess of energy and that's cool!" – Owner of the Pegasus 50 hull #3

New to the Fleet: Pegasus Yachts 50

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • March 22, 2024

Pegasus Yachts 50 sailboat

Pegasus Yachts has found strong momentum since the European premiere of its Pegasus 50. With the latest two hulls, Nos. 9 and 10, going to US owners, that momentum is now swinging over to North America.

Located in Slovenia, Pegasus Yachts was founded in 2019 by the same team who, for more than 20 years, built large carbon-displacement cruising yachts with oceangoing capabilities. Miha Breskvar and Marko Paš established Pegasus Yachts for bluewater cruising. The Pegasus 50 is for clients who value fast, lightweight displacement, as well as comfortable living spaces. The Pegasus 50’s flexible layout forward of the salon allows for configurations tailored to cruising plans, crew preferences and the owners’ accommodations needs.

Among the Pegasus 50’s features are a convertible roof with retractable canvas over the cockpit. A tempered-glass sliding door protects the two-step entry to the salon from the cockpit. The living spaces take a note from catamaran design, with 360-degree views from the cockpit, salon and navigation station. Two technical lockers isolate the wet and dry onboard systems from the living space for quieter cruising.

A 75 hp Volvo Penta diesel engine is standard, though Pegasus offers an electric option, found on three of its existing hulls. The P50’s energy package includes a generator, a hydro-generator, and solar integrated into the deck with a 716-watt peak capacity. An optional third LiFePO4 battery adds a capacity of 600 amp-hours at 25.4 volts.

The Pegasus 50 also has an induction cooktop, a watermaker, heating and air conditioning, and a dinghy with an electric outboard that’s stored in the garage for launching from the swim platform.

Construction is vacuum-infusion, with extensive use of carbon and composite for light weight and strength. Displacement is just over 29,000 pounds. A double wing keel reduces leeway, improving the upwind angle with less drag and enhancing close-quarters maneuverability. A carbon mast, performance full-batten mainsail, and self-tacking J2, larger J1 (650 SF) and asymmetrical furling spinnaker are standard. An optional furling reacher/code zero is available.

The Pegasus 50 is rigged for short crew or solo sailing (a P50 won the 2022 OSTAR singlehanded race across the North Atlantic), with all working lines brought back to the helms, each equipped with two electric winches—a convenience for couples and families cruising offshore, as well as the solo speed-seekers who value a certain degree of comfort underway.

Thoroughly 21st Century Yachting from Pegasus Yachts – Pegasus 50 #1 Globe, HAGAZUSSA IV

January 8th, 2021

thoroughly-21st-century-yachting-from-pegasus-yachts–1-main

Splashed 2020, the Pegasus 50 #1 Globe HAGAZUSSA IV is the brainchild of the team that brought you the Shipman series, and was conceived and built for couples to sail far aboard in total comfort – and quickly.

With her full carbon build and carbon rig, she has an easily driven hull and sailing her is a rewarding experience. She is full of innovative and clever ideas that really work.

  • A prodder for the A sail which is easily set.
  • Swept back spreaders so no runners.
  • Planet friendly flexi-deck – which by the way looks fab
  • Dinghy garage.
  • Twin wheel.
  • Machinery access from the cockpit for easy maintenance with great access and negates the need for engineers to tramp through the yacht.
  • Huge cockpit.
  • Seemless transition to the main saloon which is also a deck saloon.
  • Interior watch keeping.
  • All carbon gimballed seating and dining area which can also double as a large berth. This hugely reduces fatigue when on passage as you don’t have to compensate for the movement of the yacht.
  • Great galley.
  • The sleeping accommodation is forward with a passage berth cabin and a VIP cabin forward with heads compartment which is also the day heads.
  • Owners’ stateroom with heads and shower and the option to split the double to make to large single berths.

thoroughly-21st-century-yachting-from-pegasus-yachts–2

We could go on and on about all the funky details aboard this yacht. She comes with a full bluewater cruising spec including watermaker, genset and the rest, but the nub of this yacht is that she looks fantastic and is super easy to both sail and to spend time aboard.

thoroughly-21st-century-yachting-from-pegasus-yachts–3

She is fantastic for warm water, and her handy size at 50 feet with a moderate draft of 2.35 metres means that she is welcome in those delightful small harbours and anchorages that are plentiful in the Mediterranean and elsewhere. Her performance hull shape gives her rapid passage times, and she is easily able to take advantage of modern weather routing to dodge weather systems.

thoroughly-21st-century-yachting-from-pegasus-yachts–4

We expect so see more of the Pegasus range in years to come. HAGAZUSSA IV comes with an epic livery and very high standard of specification, and she is ready for her new owners to step aboard for the 2021 season.

And you can ever read the specification: [OFF MARKET]

Pegasus 50, hull #8 and 9 launched

  • Alessandro Giuzio
  • December 11, 2023

Important milestones have been reached at Pegasus Yachts , the young Slovenian boatyard that in recent years has distinguished itself for the construction of the Pegasus 50, a sleek sailboat with a contemporary design that has gained significant appreciation on the market. Not surprisingly, hulls no. 8 and 9 have already been launched.

Pegasus-50-Maya

Pegagus 50 #8 is also the first model with three cabins, i.e. with an extra cabin compared to the standard design. The latter is located on the port side of the boat, named “ Maya ” and furnished with wonderful interiors in natural oak, instead of the classic teak. With its hull in a beautiful silver gray colour, this fascinating semi-custom Pegasus 50 is therefore ready to sail and be admired in the Mediterranean Sea and beyond: easy to handle, lightweight and high-performance, this wonderful 15-metre sailboat is able to travel around the world hassle-free, even with just one person on board. Indeed, Pegasus 50 is a sailboat designed specifically to be single-handed, as well as boasting oceanic “Category A” certification to withstand winds exceeding 40 knots and waves more than four meters high. The ballast percentage of the Pegasus 50 is also significantly higher than other boats in the same category. Not long ago, the victory in the Ostar , a very tough regatta reserved for sailing boats with a crew of just one person, demonstrated the extraordinary reliability of the Pegasus 50 as a fast cruiser.

Sine Finis

But the Slovenian shipyard is already looking ahead. Not even time to enjoy the launch of Maya, that they have returned to work on another jewel: it is called Sine Finis and it is the ninth hull of Pegasus 50, now in the final phase of construction. This boat will in fact be ready to set sail by the end of 2023 with destination United States, the country of origin of her owners. But with a little luck, we will be able to see Sine Finis whizzing by near our waters too: the owners are in fact planning a sea voyage of over a year in the Mediterranean, before tackling the long Atlantic crossing. Nothing better to respect the solemn name of this vessel: “sine finis” in Latin means “without borders”, just as the ninth Pegasus 50 is preparing to do in her upcoming cruises. Between the large interior below deck, the cockpit and the lounge connected to each other to move easily from one room to another, the navigation comfort on board the Pegasus 50 is absolute and the visibility of the sea is truly amazing, just like a superyacht .

In addition to building its boats, Pegasus Yachts is also implementing its commercial network. In fact, the news of a new US representative of the Slovenian shipyard came just a few days ago: it’s Nicolas Jonville , a new reference for all those who want to purchase a Pegasus Yachts in North America, both in Canada and in the United States. No one can act as a testimonial for these boats better than Mr. Jonville: in fact he is the owner of the “Sine Finis”.

Pegasus 50, The New Bluewater Approaches Delivery

Pegasus Yachts is a Slovenian shipyard known for its production of ocean-going sailboats. More than 10,000 yachts have been produced, including Shipman Carbon Yachts, the world’s first series carbon construction performance cruisers.

Now, hull #01 and shortly also hull #02 of the new Pegasus 50 are at different stages of construction. The first Pegasus 50, with a starting price of 480.000 EUR, will be delivered to the customer at the end of February 2020 and the second one in the middle of May 2020.

Safety, first of all

Pegasus 50 is a bluewater model designed for safe shorthanded performance sailing and a comfortable liveaboard experience with maximum freedom and complete independence. Safety is Pegasus’s key feature. This consists of design solutions, like the covered, well protected cockpit, substantial stanchions and 360° view from the saloon.

pegasus 50 yacht review

Deep cockpit, protected from spray, sun heat and rain. Without high loaded movable main sheet and with sail controls moved aft from seats to the steering position is optimized for safe and comfort shorthanded operation.

The interiors

The saloon with a 360° view is designed for pleasant sailing and the horizon is always visible to prevent sea-sickness. The sleeping cabins are far from any noise and vibration thanks to the insulated engine and technical area.

bluewater sailboats

The saloon and cabins are positioned as close to the centre of moment for minimum jaw, pitch and roll, whilst at sea. The hard top sprayhood protects the cockpit from the elements and the stern provides a private beach with easy access to the sea.

pegasus 50 bluewater

Moving through the yacht is easy thanks to the one-level, seamlessly connected cockpit and saloon; so forget about climbing steep companionway steps. There is a special bonus: a gimbaled mechanism that keeps the saloon sofa in a horizontal position even when the yacht is heeled.

pegasus 50 bluewater

Maintenance and repairs can be done comfortably, without the need for crawling into or working in tight spaces. The technical compartments are spacious, split by function and easy to reach. Important yacht functions for comfort and safety are designed to last.

Pegasus 50 - Ocean Sailing at its Best and Easiest

Pegasus 50 - Ocean Sailing at its Best and Easiest

Have you been dreaming about buying a yacht, but can’t afford to buy the wrong one? There’s an exciting new option – you can hire a Pegasus 50 for short test sail and see what it’s like to sail one for yourself before you decide to invest.

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or novice, you know that the three most important requirements for any sailing trip are safety, speed and comfort for the skipper and his guests. A boat that handles easily and is well-suited to short-handed blue water cruising is a winning recipe. If these are some of your personal requirements, the Pegasus 50 would suit your needs. Add to that its uncompromising performance, and you have a winner for sure!

The Pegasus 50 is designed, engineered, and serviced by an adventurous seafaring team who bring years of firsthand experience in blue water sailing to their business. Quality equipment is a great priority, and the Pegasus 50 is fitted with reliable, durable, and easy to maintain, repair and replace parts, sourced from trusted suppliers. The Pegasus 50 is a category A compliant ocean-going vessel, designed to be stable even in winds up to 40 knots and wave heights of 4 m.

Do yourself a favour, and allow yourself to experience the freedom and silence when the sails catch the breeze, with nothing else to hear but the swishing of the waves against the hull and the wind teasing the sails. It’s addictive and soothing.

Safe sailing comes first

Designed with this in mind, the yacht has a very comfortable and well-protected cockpit, with a protective glass windshield and a retractable canvas bimini provides good shelter when the weather turns rough or on days when the sun beats down.

The saloon and cockpit are connected by a sliding glass door, so wherever you're seated, visibility is excellent. The boat is light and airy, which makes spending time below the waterline comfortable and pleasant. The many hatches and large windows not only increase visibility but also bring good ventilation and airflow throughout the boat.

Yacht-Rent: Pegasus 50

Reliability and practicality to create ease of sailing

No sailor wants to be left in the lurch on the open seas so reliability is of paramount importance! With that in mind, the Pegasus team use quality suppliers and strive to produce highly reliable yachts. Compared to other yachts of this size, the Pegasus team focuses on simplicity and keeps in mind that 'less is more' with fewer parts, leading to less potential mistakes. The large aft compartments were not turned into cabins, but used for technical operating systems. Furthermore, the technical areas are divided into separate function areas, with all water-related equipment on the port side and electrical and electronic equipment on the starboard side. This means routine checks and any maintenance work is so much easier to carry out without being cramped into tight compartments. The Engine room is accessed through a cockpit hatch, as well as from the technical room.

Seasoned yachtsmen have given their input in the creation of Pegasus yachts, which enabled meticulous planning and the creation of sufficient storage space in the galley and in all areas of the boat.

Yacht-Rent: Pegasus 50

Ergonomics for state-of-the-art yachting

Step only three steps down the companionway from the cockpit into the airy, bright, and spacious saloon, and you’ll find seating for at least 8 people, with a stylish foldable table that forms the base for a double saloon bunk. The best thing about this double bunk is that it’s gimballed, keeping the boat steady and level no matter the angle that the boat heels. You can be confident of a good night’s sleep when under sail.

To maintain the peace and quiet when at sea, cabins on the Pegasus are situated away from the noise and vibration of the doubly-insulated engine and maintenance compartments. The cabins are positioned close to the centre of the yacht where there is less movement.

Interior spaces are well-designed and constructed to flow seamlessly and comfortably from one end of the boat to the other. This is where the saloon seating is situated, for your ultimate comfort.

There are two cabins; the main cabin has an en-suite toilet and shower, with a choice of separate or double berths. The guest cabin can have either two bunk berths or a double berth. Need more bed space? Add two berths in the front cabin area - that's if you wouldn't prefer to keep that area as a sail or storage locker.

The well-designed galley has plenty of storage and worktops, and you’ll be able to make delicious meals without being thrown around the saloon.

The Pegasus has a proven safety record in diverse weather conditions, and plenty of handholds, both inside the boat and on deck, for those days when the sea is temperamental. The large saloon windows offer panoramic views, which are not only comfortable, but also a bonus for any passengers who get seasick and need to keep their eyes on the horizon.

If you’re worried about seasickness, scientific research has proven that when cruising on the ocean, sitting where there is little boat movement, i.e., as close to the vertical centre of gravity of the boat, significantly reduces seasickness and fatigue.

Thanks to the input and advice of experienced sailors, the Pegasus is meticulously planned and designed to make it a comfortable and safe vessel that delivers all the speed, safety, stability, and comfort that any boat buyer would appreciate.

Yacht-Rent: Pegasus 50

Sailing speed

To provide for maximum speed, careful planning went into the conceptual and design plan to create a streamlined contemporary hull structure. Total displacement was taken into account so to avoid reducing diesel (480 litres), water (740 litres) and equipment capacity, weight reduction has been optimised by quality engineering and lightweight construction.

All this careful planning created a streamlined contemporary hull that performs extremely well under diverse sailing conditions. Quality engineering, innovative lightweight construction and carbon fibre mast and boom make this boat very light, and a lighter boat is always faster. Under full main sail and jib, with TWS 22 knots/100 TWA and on autopilot, speeds of up to 12,5 knots are possible. Grab a cocktail from the fridge, sit back, put your feet up, take it easy and let the yacht take you to exotic destinations, comfortably and safely.

Some Main Specs and Distinguishing Features

The boat is equipped with a Standard 75HP Diesel engine and carries 480 litres of diesel and 740 litres of water. There is a large battery bank to keep all your devices charged and important navigation equipment functioning.

The Pegasus easily handles heavy upwind conditions, and the aft-set mast gives more sail area, making sail handling a breeze. This is a great boat for sailing in light winds, while still being stable and comfortable in heavier wind.

The tandem keels improve safety, comfort, and speed during long distance sailing, with improved directional stability and reduced rolling. The tandem keels give more reverse steering control when docking in crowded harbours as well.  The shorter rudders reduce drag and offer almost total control in all conditions with very little danger of broaching. A well-balanced sail plan and auxiliary steering system maximise energy usage for the autopilot, drawing power mainly from the solar panels. The Pegasus 50 is easy to sail upwind, in fact, with her lighter, stronger, and safer hull construction, this boat performs well in any wind.

With the dinghy stored in a compartment under the cockpit floor, you can easily launch the dingy and go exploring around any anchorage. A convenient fold-out swimming platform makes it easy to climb back on board after a refreshing swim in the sea.
