I have an Endeavour 35 sailboat out of production for some time. Its a testament to the quality of the hatches installed in 1983! This year I replaced some of the support hardware. Brian is great and guided me to what I needed to bring the hatches back into shape. Superior quality and customer support. What could be better? Thanks Atkins and Hoyle

I had been searching for a crane for my sport fishing boat for several months, when I came upon Atkins and Hoyle. From the start, Eric and Brian were extremely helpful in selecting the right product for my application. They made suggestions to me, which I did not even think about previously. Needless to say, they made the process of selecting, ordering and final receipt of their products a breeze! Furthermore, the quality of this crane far exceeded my expectations. I also must share that after receipt of the crane, I had installations issues, which they eagerly worked me through and I could not be more pleased. It's amazing when you can buy a product off the internet and the seller doesn't forget about you after the sale is made. You can't go wrong with Atkins and Hoyle. I recommend them highly and without reservation.

Atkins & Hoyle personal were very helpful in determining the model and specifications for 3 sailboat hatches that were at least 30 years old and even had parts/instructions on proper methods of resealing. I was very impressed for such old equipment. Thanks Again.

Outstanding product, used them from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas and back. Well built, great folks to talk to about your needs

Stainless Steel Arch with Solar Panels and Dinghy Davits. C&C 41

Atkins & Hoyle is a premier marine hatch and port manufacturer. With over 100 years of experience, we have the skills, tools and necessary expertise to bring your hatches and ports back to like-new condition. Let our experts refurbish your hatches and portlights.

If you have specific questions related to our services and product, here are all relevant answer to many common questions:

Why are Atkins & Hoyle designs different?

When we designed our products, we chose the best possible processes and materials to give you the strongest, lightest, and most easily mounted system.A system which would mount in a range different configurations. Our castings are our secret to sucess, and what sets us apart from ALL others. This design allows us to add strength where required and take out weight where it is not needed. As a fourth generation family business, the techniques we use were handed down generation after generation. Newer companies, and in fact all other system in the world use a bent / welded design; All Stainless will suffer a reduction in corrosion resistance because of welding. These davits cannot come close to the features Atkins & Hoyle has come to know as standard - customizable, durable, stronger, lighter, and more corrosion resistant.  Our castings are 215-R1 Anodized, a process which hardens the surface and coats them with an Electrical Insulator; preventing Electrolysis due to disimilar metals

What does “safe working load” mean?

Our davits our rated to a safe working load that is well below their tested maximum capacity. This means that we test our davits beyond what we ultimately rate them at because we know that there is a lot of extra load when your boat is on the water. Make sure that any davit system that you are considering quotes only a safe working load and is not simply the useless “maximum capacity” that many other davit manufacturers use. Other manufacturers’ tubing is not stronger than ours, not only because the unique way that we produce our products, but in the fact that the wall is reduced during their bending process. Simply put, all other davit manufacturers overrate their products

If I have an angled transom or large swim platform, how do I get the extra reach that I need?

Atkins & Hoyle davits are fully adjustable, allowing you get the most reach that is possible with a davit system. This is accomplished with our innovative spline casting that locks our modular units after a one time adjustment, thus allowing you to tailor suit the height and reach for your particular boat. Our 1900 model can also have added length to the tubes if you require even more reach, up to 12 inches. Our systems also have the ability to hold the davit away from the rail or transom to give the maximum reach that you need.

Why does Atkins & Hoyle use an aluminum-magnesium alloy?

The conditions and forces that we expect our products to go trough demand that we use a super strong, super light alloy that will not corrode in salt water. The best alloy for these specifications is Almag 35, an aluminum-magnesium alloy. This non-ferrous, anti-corrosion metal alloy is perfectly suited to the marine industry because it is lighter stronger than ordinary aluminum. Almag 35 is the lightest, strongest and most corrosion resistant alloy for marine use available today. It provides a 40% elongation, meaning that instead of breaking, the davits are flexible, absorbing shock loads, it has a tensile strength 44000 lb. per square inch and is 20 % lighter than aluminum

What is the best lifting ratio for a davit?

We believe in providing the highest lifting ratio for our davits. All of davits have a MINIMUM 6:1 block and pulley system, most come standard with a 7:1 purchase. Our 750 lb. Model 5000 has a 12:1 system plus a 6.8:1 winch. All of these purchase systems are designed to give a maximum 30 lb. pull on the rope. This provides 100% safety advantage while other manufactures provide optional block systems that exceed the tolerance of their davit systems. This ensures that you have to expend the least amount energy as possible to secure your tender.

There is no rail on my transom; can I still mount rotating davits?

Yes, all of our davit systems can be mounted in a variety of ways. The universal base mount can be fitted to any angle so it can lie flat against your deck or transom in place of a rail mount.

Raise the Bar: The Absolute Best Boat Davit Systems

Raise the Bar: The Absolute Best Boat Davit Systems

It's a bright beautiful day and the water and weather are perfect. You have the water toys packed and you're motoring out into the big blue.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to bring your jet ski along with you? What about a small boat to be able to head to shore while your trawler, catamaran or sportfishing boat is moored out?

This is the perfect situation for a boat davit system.

What Is a Boat Davit System?

A boat davit system is a crane-like mechanism used to raise, lower and store small watercraft like dinghies, lifeboats, inflatable boats, fishing kayaks or jet skis on the back (swim platform or deck) of a boat.

Boat davit systems can be attached to sailboats, pontoon boats and power boats. They are also used on concrete seawalls, docks and pilings.

Parts of a Boat Davit System

Boat davit systems come in a wide variety of designs. I was actually surprised to learn how many different ways you can lift a small boat up onto a larger boat.

While boat davit systems may seem like a highly technical machine, they actually consist of two main components: the part that goes on the back of the boat (often the only component) and the part that lifts the boat up.

We'll get into the various types later, but let's go over a few of the main parts. Keep in mind that not every part is used on every type of boat davit system.

  • Base: Permanently mounted to the boat, either on the swim platform or back of the boat.
  • Arm:  This is what picks up the dinghy, jet ski or small boat out of the water. It can be raised, lowered or removed. Some boat davit systems don't have an arm. We'll get into that below.
  • Winch: Just like the winch on your boat trailer, it's mounted to the top of your boat and then attaches to the dinghy (which is secured to the swim platform via a snap davit) and pulls it up to a vertical position. Winches are needed for heavy vessels like jet skis.

 Winch Straps

Check Price on Amazon - Better Boat's winch strap is strong, reliable and UV resistant. It offers a working load of up to 3,333 lbs. and a break strength of 10,000 lbs. It has a zinc-plated steel hook and marine-grade webbed polyester. Use for boats, jet skis, snowmobiles and more.

Types of Boat Davit Systems

In addition to the more mechanical boat davit systems mentioned above, there are smaller boat davit systems that just consist of latches on the swim platform.

Let's check out a few of the different types.

A snap davit secures a dinghy (or other small inflatable boats) to a boat's swim platform or back deck. The dinghy snaps into a latch system and then the boat actually hangs off the boat's back, over the water. This type is used for lightweight boats.

Pivot-Up Vertical Davit

This type of davit system stores the boat in an upright (vertical) position. The weight is equally distributed. This is a good choice for boats that don't have a swim platform.

Pull-On Davit

Inflatable boats and dinghies use pull-on davit systems. You use human power to pull on the boat to place it on the stands that hold it in place. This is best used for lightweight boats.

Lift-Up Davit

Lift davits use the arm and base mentioned earlier. Two arms hold the boat up above the water at the back of the boat. It's a good choice for an aft or stern of a sailboat.

Sling Davit

A sling davit is a fairly simple system. It basically consists of a mesh-like structure (a sling, of sorts) that goes across the bottom of the boat and holds it at an angle off the swim platform. It can easily be taken with you or stored in a dock box  with water toys, dock lines , buoys , gear and cleaning products when you leave.

Winch-On Davit

The winch-on davit system can usually hold up to 400 pounds. This is the type you need for jet skis. It mounts on the swim platform. A winch is used to attach it, raising it out of the water. You can easily push off for launching into the water.

Crane Davit

The crane davit is mounted to a dock and can hold much heavier weights (1,000 pounds and up). It consists of a base and an arm (or boom). There's a cable and winch system on the arm that attaches to the front, back or both of the vessel, which can then hoist it up.

A crane davit is a good choice when you want to store your boat out of the water (such as for  hurricane preparation or when it won't be in use for a while), yet with easy access to put it back into the water. Crane davits can be operated by pneumatic, electric or hydraulic power.

The Absolute Best Boat Davit Systems

C-Level Dinghy Lift XL for Rigid Inflatable Boat

The C-Level Dinghy Lift is a great choice for rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) that have three internal lifting eyes. The strap attaches to these eyes to lift the RIB into place.

It's lifted by a one-point or two-point system made of stainless steel hardware and buckles and strong 3,800-pound 1-inch nylon webbing.

Adjustable buckles help balance the load, which can be up to 450 pounds .

  • Type : Lift
  • Weight Rating : 450 lbs
  • Best For : <11 ft RIBs, inflatables and dinghies

Dinghy Davits Top Mount Davit System Weaver Mount

The Dinghy Davits Top Mount system is easy to install and lets you take your jet ski with you on your high seas adventures. Install it by through-bolting the plates onto the platform.

It has quick-release pins so that you can remove it at the end of the season, or, heaven forbid, if you sell the boat.

It's rated for 800 pounds , which makes it an excellent choice for jet skis and heavier tenders.

  • Type : Top mount winch system
  • Weight Rating : 800 lbs
  • Best For : Jet skis, inflatable boats, tenders and dinghies

Dinghy Sling Davit for Inflatable Boats

If you need to carry a dinghy but don't want to mount permanent fixtures to your boat deck, this is the davit system for you. It's also an option if you don't have a swim platform.

The Dinghy Sling Davit is made of high-strength stiff webbing that simply holds the dinghy in place. The dingy can be stored at any angle so as not to obstruct your view.

It has long straps for wide beamed boats, which prevents drag on your boat by keeping the vessel out of the water (if you were towing it).

  • Type : Sling davit
  • Weight Rating : N/A
  • Best For : Dinghies, kayaks, SUPs and inflatable boats

SeaLux Marine Products Snap Davits Instant Lock System

The SeaLux Marine Products Snap Davits System is a simple but very useful set-up. Spring-loaded davit fittings lock into a hook that gets attached to the tender or dinghy.

It stores the vessel in a 90-degree position out of the water. It's less expensive than a lift davit system, and it's great for inflatables and RIBs up to 220 pounds .

  • Type : Snap davit
  • Weight Rating : 220 lbs
  • Best For : Dinghies, RIBs and tenders

Pro Hoists Davit Crane Hoist

This 360 swiveling davit is a great choice for bigger vessels that are less than 1,000 pounds . It mounts to the dock and a cable attaches to a boat or jet ski.

There's a manual winch that's used to lift your boat or jet ski in and out of the water. This model can also be mounted to a truck bed if you prefer.

  • Type : Crane davit
  • Weight Rating : 1,000 lbs
  • Best For : Jet skis and small boats

Boat Davit System Accessories

Chocks aren't really needed for RIBs and flat-bottomed vessels, but jet skis have more of a V-hull and require some help to stay stable. Unlike the  wheel chocks and docks  used for your boat trailer, this type of chock system mounts to the deck or roof of your boat, and the jet ski or tender is then set on top for balance and stability. Tie-down straps  are used for additional security.

Most chocks are removable if you decide you don't need them anymore.

Have you nailed down the features and types of boat davit systems best suited for your needs?

Hopefully, this has helped you with any boat davit system questions you might have. Happy Boating!

Hurley H3O Dinghy Davit System ®

The Hurley   H3O Dinghy Davit System ®  is specifically designed to allow the safe retrieval and stowage of a rib dinghy / hard-hulled tender, using the linear bunk system for on your boat or dock. The  H3O Dinghy Davit ® has an adjustable and removable winching system.  The stainless steel retrieval arm is adjustable from 3' to 5', depending upon the length of your tender.  Easily removed for storage while underway.  The H3O Dinghy Davit is ideal for tenders up to 10'6" (3.23m) long and not more than 400 pounds (181.43 kg) capacity.  A davit extension is available for smaller platforms.

The system has two small stainless steel mount plates that requires only a total of four bolts for the install and only stands 5/8" high ( 2 included).   This mounting system provides a quick release leaving a clear deck for any activity.   Mount Covers are available.   Easily mounted on the swim platform, these hassle-free systems let you winch your dinghy on for easy storage or just push-off for launching.   Always available in an emergency.

In order for the H3O Dinghy Davit® to work for you, your platform will need to have the workable depth (transom to swim platform edge) of at least half of the beam of your tender, or more. It's all dependant upon tender weight, as well as other configurations of your vessel.  Give us a hail or fill-out our Davit Worksheet  to let us help you figure it all out! 12 reviews for Hurley H3O Dinghy Davit System

Jeff H Evans – December 4, 2020

After having various versions of davits on prior boats with varying levels of complexity, I searched for davits that were simple, had a small footprint and I could operate single handed with a 10′ RIB and 15 HP outboard. The H30 delivered all my requirements and more. Installed on my 460 Express in 2016, I now have 5 years experience on the Great Lakes with the H30 and it has never let me down. Thank you Hurley for engineering an elegant solution.

Henrik Andresen – July 5, 2017

Wanted to send You pics after installation and purchase of the new GTI (90). This is the only davit I could use! Works fine! Thanks to You I didn’t have to settle for The Spark.

Best Regards, Henrik Andresen Norway

Marty Russon – July 5, 2017

Todd, You are a genius! Thanks for an incredible davits system. I bought your H3O hand crank davit system. There are so many positives I dont know where to begin. In a word, it worked! I have looked for quite some time for a davit solution that would allow me to load and unload my hard bottom dinghy with a Mercury 9.9 4 stroke all by myself. My bad back really appreciates what you have created in the H3O. Great job!

Ron – September 1, 2015

We purchased your Opriginal davit to carry our 10 foot AB RIB with its 4hp motor. Over the few years we owned it (we’ve now given it to a friend) we realized it was not the right choice for our 45 foot Sea Ray Sundancer. Its swim platform is 18 inches off the water and the angle needed to haul it up made it increasingly difficult to get the AB up onto the swim platform. The solution, AND IT REALLY WORKS, is your H3O! Thank you Todd!

Chris C – August 23, 2015

I installed this on a 2003 Rinker 342FV with an AB9.5AL RIB and 9.9hp Mercury. I tried another brand of a pull on type and to say it was difficult to pull up is an underestimate. Finally purchased the H3O after talking with the people at Hurley if there was enough room to use it.

The H3O is amazing! Effortless to load/launch, secure on the platform, dingy secure. Easy install. Had several people come look at it at a raft off party this weekend too. Definately worth the price.

Edward – April 28, 2015

I had the H2O and it works good. But since i upgraded my dinghy to a bigger one it was a two man job to pull it up. Now I upgraded to the H3O and even my wife can deal with the dinghy. This product has change the way we used to enjoy our dinghy becase before i drop it to the water only if necesary, now I put it in the water every time we anchor and enjoy our platform more. Thanks Hurley Marine from Puerto Rico!

Bryan – September 2, 2014

This is a super cool unit. It allows me to put a jet ski on the back on my 34 ft Sea Ray Sundancer (340). Boat runs fine with it on the back. I am so happy. Bryan

David Toney – August 25, 2014

Finally got the H3 installed. Works great with the Spark which is about 1/2 weight of other sea doo models. Just thought I’d share.

Mark Gust – August 21, 2014

The H30 is the best new marine product I have seen in a lifetime of boating. If you have a heavy dinghy and/or a higher swim platform this is the BEST solution. FINALLY I can launch and retrieve my Zodiac easily and quickly by myself. Without the H30 I had to recruit others to help me pull it up or remove the motor to lighten it. Now with the H30 I am now seriously considering adding a SeaDoo Spark as a new “toy” for our boating fun because I know I can easily haul and retrieve it. Before this H30 I was actually considering a hydraulic swim platform or a crane as an option. Happy Boating Everyone! Mark / Lake St Clair MI

Kenneth Sverre – August 12, 2014

I have used the H30 on my Sealine SC35 this summer too lift a 330 Rib, it works perfect. Experienced sailors have been impressed how easy it works.

1:600 Moskva: Aurora vs Airfix

One of the first ship kits I built was the 1:600 scale Aurora Moscow helicopter anti-submarine ship (not to be confused with the Moskva of the Atlant class of missile cruisers, aka Project 1164).  I also built the Airfix version, and there are differences.

Back then it was the final two decades of the Cold War (unbeknownst to both NATO and Warsaw Pact) and we average kit builders in the United States didn’t have access to reliable information on Warsaw Pact vehicles.  Most publications in English would only say that what we now know was Project 1123 Kondor couldn’t handle rough seas, and that production was halted after only two ships were launched.  I always doubted such NATO propaganda because if the ships were so bad why were they in use until the mid-1990s?

Today we do have access to reliable info (including Kagero Top Drawings #55 book, with detailed scale drawings of things like missile launchers, for those of us who read English), and we have at least one aftermarket detailing set for the 1:600 scale Moskva.  I spent a lot of money on a Russian magazine supplement before learning about the Kagero book.  I also got a hold of the photo etched set #618 by White Ensign.

The Aurora Moscow was first issued in 1969, and for some reason last issued in 1972.  Airfix issued their Moskva in 1973, and as far as I know last issued it in the late 1990s.  In the early 1980s it was issued in the U.S. under the MPC brand.

The Aurora and Airfix hulls are just short of 13 inches (33cm) long, the Aurora being slightly shorter than Airfix.  The Aurora hull is also taller and skinnier than the Airfix hull.  The anchors are molded onto the Aurora hull and both kits have different shaped hull openings and portholes.

Both kits have chunky plastic for the radar antennae. Both kits do not come with missiles for the missile launchers.  Both kits do not have the massive retractable sonar dome located towards the front of the bottom of the hull.  It was this massive dome that was probably the reason the tall ship reportedly nose dived into the water during rough seas.  Apparently NATO was unaware of this dome during the Cold War, or for some reason it was never mentioned in publications made available to the general public.

The Airfix Kamov helicopters are molded in two halves and don’t look good.  The Aurora helicopters are molded in one piece, they look good but not quite like Kamovs (more like Kamovs than Airfix).  The plus with the Aurora kit is you get optional retracted/folded rotor blades.  The Aurora deck is one piece with more detailing than Airfix, and even has optional position hanger doors and space in the superstructure/funnel (molded in two pieces) area.  The Airfix deck is in three pieces, it has optional position hanger doors but the space in the superstructure/funnel (molded in three pieces) is blanked off.  The Airfix helicopter deck has recessed spaces to represent elevators.

The big open ass, I mean aft end, I mean stern of the ship is plane Jane in the Aurora kit, with two life boats.  There’s some kind of blocky details in the Airfix kit.  Aurora gives you davits to hang the life boats on, while Airfix gives you upside down ‘U’s to set them on.  The propellers, I mean screws are different in shape and size between the two kits.

The ship has two large cranes, Aurora uses chunks of plastic to represent them while Airfix gives you a better looking multi-part system.

Click on the pics to make them bigger:

sailboat davit systems

The White Ensign photo etched set has thin brass parts for the radars, railings, davits, cranes, hanger doors, missile launcher detailing, much better details for the ass end, ship name plates (Moscow & Leningrad) and parts for the Airfix helicopters (including tini-tiny landing gear parts which’l probably bend under the weight of the plastic).  A major problem with White Ensign’s instructions is that they leave out where to use the differently shaped hand rails.  Also, you get PE rotor blades in the extended position, but not retracted.

If you love 1:600 scale ships the best way to get a good looking and close to accurate Moskva/Leningrád is to kit bash the Airfix and Aurora kits, use the White Ensign Models PE set, and scratch build missiles, as well as the sonar domes under the hull.

Note: Research is also key to making as accurate a Project 1123 as you can.  The ships had numerous different hull numbers and even different ‘paint jobs’ over the decades.  You’ll need to find color photographs of a specific hull number, especially overhead views which’l reveal what color/colors the decks were painted.
