Hargrave Yachts History
Jack Hargrave started his career designing sportfishing boats for Rybovitch before leaving to open his own design shop in 1958. The direction of yachting was forever changed on the day that Willis Slade asked Hargrave to design the world’s first large fiberglass sportfishing yacht. When the resulting yacht, was launched to acclaim in 1960, it marked the beginning of Hatteras Yachts and the birth of a new industry.
Jack Hargrave had a talent for combining timeless exterior profiles with practical, functional interior arrangements, producing vessels that came to define the American style of yachts. Over the next 40+ years, he designed more than 75 powerboats for Hatteras , going on to design over 250 yachts for some of America’s premiere yacht companies, including Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic, Striker, and Halmatic. His influence and skill as the foremost American naval architect and yacht designer led to his induction into the NMMA Hall of Fame in 1996, and kept his company on its pinnacle as America’s top naval design firm.
In 1997, shortly after the legendary designer passed away, a former employee named Michael Joyce returned to the firm to take over as president and CEO. Joyce was determined not to let the iconic company fade away, convinced that Hargrave, far more than just a design firm, was in fact a brand name. Joyce realized that Hargrave could no longer rely on builders for steady business, as the most successful yacht builders had formed their own in-house design and engineering departments. He conceived a plan to expand the company into a constructor of custom luxury yachts, and Hargrave Custom Yachts was born.
Hargrave Yachts produces a full line of custom-built yachts, designed entirely to the specifications of each owner. They offer a unique cost effective program that blends a custom design with a semi-production build process, giving the savings back to the client. Their attention to detail and unwaveringly high standards are paying off; more than half of their owners have built more than one yacht with them and some are now on their fourth order!

Hargrave Yachts
Hargrave custom yacht builders are based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and are the makers of luxury yachts. They pride themselves on being one of the few builders of superyachts to offer fully custom built motor yachts for sale, in the 70 feet to 130 feet (21 meters to 40 meters) size category. Hargrave have a solid history in navel architecture, the company was originally set up by legendary designer Jack Hargrave over 35 years ago. Jack Hargrave was known to some as "The man who put America on water". When the current CEO Michael Joyce rejoined Hargrave's in 1997, shortly after Jack Hargrave had passed away, he saw the potential to take the company in another direction. Michael Joyce realized that the yachting industry had changed and that they needed to find a new niche if they wanted to keep on producing superyachts for sale. The idea of a fully customizable luxury yacht seemed like the logical progression for their superyachts design, as well as building upon the brand name started by Jack Hargrave. Today the Hargrave product line of luxury yachts has the following yachts for sale in their most recent brochure: The Hargrave Capri Series Motor Yacht 70 feet long (21 meters) has the capacity for 6 guests and 1-2 x crew members. The Hargrave Capri Series Motor Yacht 82 feet long (25 meters) has the capacity for 7 guests and 1-3 x crew members. Hargrave Capri Series Motor Yacht 90 feet long (27.5 meters) has the capacity for 7-10 guests and 2-3 x crew members. Hargrave Capri Series Motor Yacht 97 feet long (29.5 meters) has the capacity for 8-12 guests and 2-4 x crew members. Hargrave Capri Series Motor Yacht 100 to 130 feet long (30.5 to 40 meters) Raised Pilothouse Series has the capacity for 8-10 guests and 3-4 x crew members. Hargrave had an original goal of producing 100 custom designed and built boats for sale. They are well on their way to achieving that goal with many customers becoming repeat customers of theirs. There is a certain thrill to seeing your sailing yacht sailing once it has been built to your exact specifications. A Hargrave yacht is created by using the Hargrave approach towards custom building luxury motor yachts which has 6 steps: Design, Personalization, Visualization, Progress, Delivery and Support. Some of the luxury yachts that have been built this way by Hargrave are: 115' Tri-Deck Series MISSY B II; 108' Raised Pilothouse FREEDOM; 105' Capri Series Flush Deck DREAM; 99' Capri Series Raised Pilothouse KATINA; 96' Capri Raised Pilothouse La vida; 97' Raised Pilothouse OVERBORED; 97' Capri Fly Bridge HOOTER PATROL IV; 97' Raised Pilothouse GIGI; 94' Capri Sky Lounge SUGAR TOO; 94' Capri Sky Lounge CARISSIMA; 90' Raised Pilothouse DANI (Ex LADY MICHELLE); 90' Capri Sky Lounge MABUHAY LIMA; 81' Sky Lounge ED's TOY; 68' Capri TARA; 78' Sky Lounge BLUE MARTINI. The Hargrave focus on the personalization of the design and build of luxury yachts means that each yacht reflects the personality of the owner, as is often reflected in the names of the motor yachts. Alongside the charter and brokerage services Hargrave also discusses about the resale value of your boat at the time of the design conception. This is something that is not often discussed by other shipbuilders of a comparable standard. If you want to be fully included in all aspects of the design and build of your yacht and to create a highly individual vessel then you may find the service offered by Hargrave custom luxury yachts to be exactly what you are looking for.

Where is Jeff Bezos yacht built?
Koru is a luxury custom superyacht owned by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. The vessel was built in the Netherlands by Oceanco starting in 2021, and delivered in April 2023. It is a three-masted sailing yacht 127 meters (417ft) long and reported to have cost $500million or more. When commissioned, the yacht was the second-largest sailing yacht in the world, after Andrey Melnichenko’s Sailing Yacht A.
In 2022, Rotterdam announced that the city’s historic De Hef bridge would be temporarily partially dismantled to allow the yacht to pass through. This move was controversial because the bridge is a Dutch national monument owing to its history. Eventually the dismantling plan of the ‘De Hef’ bridge proved to be unnecessary. The masts were stepped when the vessel was moored downstream of the bridge in the Rotterdam Harbour.
A 75-metre (246ft) 1,900 Gross ton yacht support vessel, the Abeona, will “shadow” Koru, providing additional crew accommodation, a helipad with enclosed helicopter accommodation, and capacity for relief supplies.
Who is the CEO of Hargrave yachts?
Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts, has always been an innovator. Embracing the changing times and the technological miracles of our age, he has been able to employ technology without succumbing to it. As a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for the finest traditions in yachting and thirty years experience as a CEO in the industry, he knew it was the right time for a truly custom yacht in the 80′ – 150′ size range with realistic pricing to enter the market.
His use of computer-aided design and contemporary modes of communication helped bring the Hargrave Company into the 21st Century. Mr. Joyce stated, “Today, demanding buyers customize everything they purchase in life. The computer industry builds computers to order, based on each individual customer’s specifications, heck, even hamburgers are now made to order so why not yachts?” Production boat have come a long way he pointed out but added they’re not for everyone. “Some people know exactly what they want and that’s why we’re here.”
Michael Joyce has a way of bringing the best of yesterday and today together for a new and better tomorrow. Hargrave has grown over the past twenty years to be recognized as one of the top brand names in the mid sized luxury yacht market. As America’s favorite designers, builders, and distributors world-class custom yachts we are now well past our initial goal of 100 orders since starting our construction program. We average eight to ten yachts under construction at one time, and have six all new models currently going through development and prototyping at the Hargrave Concept Studio. Over 52% of our Hargrave owners have built more than one yacht with us and some are now on their fourth new Hargrave! Maybe it’s time for you to take a close look at Hargrave.
Who makes prestige yachts?
THE FIRST PRESTIGE MODEL. Jeanneau, with the long-term collaboration of Garroni Design, launched the first PRESTIGE on the market of luxury motor yachts. The PRESTIGE 41 marked the beginning of the PRESTIGE brand story, earning its reputation for contemporary style and seaworthiness.
THE FIRST PRESTIGE FLYBRIDGE. The PRESTIGE 36 introduced the brand to Flybridge motor yachts segment, giving birth to first generation of the F-LINE range. PRESTIGE Flybridges were appreciated for their spacious storage, wide sundecks, and full helm station, for fully enjoying life at sea.
PRESTIGE EXPANSION. During this period, PRESTIGE experienced rapid expansion with the opening of a modern production facility next to the historic Jeanneau shipyard, in Les Herbiers, France.
Where are Lazzara yachts built?
A Lazzara 106 will set you back a cool $8 million. The company builds about eight yachts a year for clients in Florida and across the country from its high-tech facility on Tampa Bay’s eastern shore, south of the Gandy Bridge. Housed in a massive airplane hangar, with two smaller side wings, the production facility is state of the art.
Yet what strikes you immediately are the gleaming white floors – very unboatyard like. But this is no ordinary boat-building enterprise. Closer instead to modern automobile assembly, Lazzara integrates and installs fully completed components on site from the ground up. Large fiberglass parts, including the hull, main deck and fly bridge, are manufactured first. Then the frame moves to the middle hangar, where workers install engines, mechanical and electrical systems, and high-end AV and navigational electronics, before finishing and fully furnishing the interior.
Production takes about a year for a 106 (106 feet long), eight months for a Lazzara 80. The company previously built 76-foot and 94-foot yachts.

As Royal Huisman proudly states, “If you can dream it, we can build it!”
Those buying a new superyacht will therefore have many questions to ask themselves before settling on a suitable yacht builder and shipyard facility to carry out the project. Thankfully for these prospective owners, there are a number of luxury superyacht builders that have the ability to turn the biggest mega yacht dreams into reality.

It has been generally accepted by naval architects and industry executives that superyachts range from 37m (≈120ft) to 60m (≈200ft), while those over 60m are known as megayachts and boats over 90m (≈300ft) have been referred to as giga-yachts.
Does Sergey Brin own a yacht?
The sleek, silver-and-white vessel sits among a smattering of other high-end cruisers, but this boat is a bit different: Butterfly, as the yacht is known, is owned by the world’s 13th-richest person, Google’s cofounder Sergey Brin.
Butterfly isn’t the tech mogul’s only oceangoing investment. Brin has quietly collected a fleet of luxury yachts and water-sports vehicles that those in his inner circle call the “Fly Fleet,” a recent Insider investigation into the post-Google lives of the 49-year-old and his fellow Google founder, Larry Page, found.
The blossoming armada is just one part of how he’s keeping busy since stepping back from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, in 2019 — along with a string of high-flying parties, an effort to build a new generation of zeppelins, and hundreds of millions of dollars in philanthropic donations.
According to people close to Brin, the Fly Fleet consists of three major vessels and a coterie of small craft and water-sports equipment. First, there’s Dragonfly — a 73-meter flagship yacht that features a helipad and movie theater and that was once described by Boat International as the “fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water.”
Which country makes the best yachts?
NORTHERN EUROPE. The Northern European countries are especially known for building fully custom and semi-custom motor and sailing yachts. The Netherlands and Germany top the yachting industry for delivering yachts over 50m with large volume and a high value. German builders Lürssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Nobiskrug deliver full-custom yacht projects, while Dutch builders like Amels/Damen Yachting, Heesen and Moonen build high-end semi-custom yachts based on model platforms. In the full custom category, Feadship, Oceanco and Royal Hakvoort specialize in the construction of full-custom motor yachts, while Royal Huisman delivers made-to-measure sailing yachts. Both custom and semi-custom yachts built in Northern Europe tend to keep a far higher resale value on the brokerage market. Thanks to their high-quality finish and extreme levels of customization, it’s fair to say that these yachts are akin to floating works of art.
Among Northern Europe’s production series yards, Sunseeker, Princess Yachts and Pearl Yachts offer motor yachts between 17m and 40m. These directly compete with Southern European yacht builders. Among the Mediterranean countries, Italy and Turkey are the two main producers for semi-custom and production series yachts up to 50m. Most Italian-built yachts are made from GRP and often form part of a branded series for yards, examples of which are Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Ferretti, Benetti, Arcadia Yacht, Maiora, Falcon Yachts and Amer Yachts.
ITALY. When it comes to speed, Italian builders, such as AB Yachts, Tecnomar, Azimut, Mangusta, Leopard Yachts, Riva and Pershing, excel in planing and open vessels. But over the past decade, a flurry of new yacht builders has entered the market delivering lager yachts and more customizable options that rival heritage builders like Baglietto, Codecasa and ISA Yachts. Perini Navi remains one of the most exclusive sailing yacht builders offering performance and style, but when it comes to innovative design solutions, Columbus Yachts, Tankoa, Cantiere delle Marche and the revival of Admiral brought have risen through the pack.

The Hargrave company was originally known as the top American yacht design organization starting in 1957 when, under the direction of legendary designer Jack Hargrave, the company played an important role in the success of companies like Hatteras, Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic & Halmatic to name just a few.

Hargrave Yachts for Sale
One of America’s top shipyards, Hargrave has been producing yachts since the 1950s. Over the decades, the Hargrave shipyard has established a reputation for progressive designs and speedy sports boats.
When the company was originally founded by nautical designer, Jack Hargrave, design was the main focus and Jack worked with other leading US brands such as Burger and Hatteras for the boat construction. Hargrave’s designs played an important role in the independent success of those brand names as well.
Whilst continuing to design yachts, the company added yacht construction to its offering in 1997, following the death of Jack Hargrave in 1996. Hargrave then became known as Hargrave Custom Yachts.
The shipyard has enjoyed continued success and now builds a variety of yachts from 68 – 136ft (21 – 42m) in length. For the construction of larger vessels, Hargrave has a number of collaborative options and international partners. For over 30 years Hargrave has worked with the Taiwanese shipyard, Kha Shing, and recently larger vessels, such as the 136-foot (42m) DREAMER, have been built in Turkey.
The Hargrave shipyard enjoys strong repeat business from existing clients and remains a key name in the yachting industry. Recent statistics showed that over 52% of Hargrave owners have built more than one yacht with the yard, and some are onto their third, even fourth, new Hargrave.
History of Hargrave Yachts
The Hargrave shipyard was founded by nautical designer, Jack Hargrave, in 1957 and is widely regarded as one of the top shipyards in the United States.
Through the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, Hargrave was largely a design office, collaborating with other builders for the construction of Hargrave-designed vessels.
Following the death of Jack Hargrave in 1996, former Hargrave employee Michael Joyce returned to the company after an absence of twenty years and took over as President and CEO. Recognizing that Hargrave had the potential to be far more than just a design office, Joyce pursued new yacht construction with full force.
Joyce was a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for yachting. A keen innovator, Joyce embraced the changing times and technological advancements that came through the late nineties and early noughties and presented custom yachts between 80 – 150 feet (24 – 45m) to the marketplace.
Joyce stepped down as president of Hargrave in 2007, in favor of Michael DiCondina, but remains the full share-owner. Mike DiCondina and his team were selling and delivering new Hargrave yachts throughout the decade-long recession and at that date of handover he had the vision to expand into larger yachts. Now Hargrave builds up to 136-foot (42m) boats.
Putting the fun back into yachting one owner at a time
The Hargrave collection
The first Hargrave motor yacht was delivered in 1999 and Hargrave quickly made a name for itself, winning numerous awards for its sporty tri-deck motor yachts and sportfish-inspired vessels. This first Hargrave-built vessel was 87-foot (26.7m) long and was named HOUND DOG.
Hargrave shipyard has enjoyed several decades of steady advancement and brand awareness. The yard prides itself on building a wide variety of yachts ranging from 68ft to 136ft (21m to 42m) and also has a number of collaborative options for the construction of larger vessels.
Notable vessels from the Hargrave range include 138-foot (42m) DREAMER, launched in 2010, and the 115-foot (35m) RENAISSANCE, which was delivered in 2015 and built in collaboration with Kha Shing Enterprises.
The Hargrave shipyard continues to enjoy steady repeat business from existing clients and their largest build to date, which measures 184 feet (56m) was for a three-time Hargrave owner. This 184-foot superyacht was launched in 2019 and is named BABA’S. Motor Yacht BABA’s is of steel construction and was built to RINA classification. The luxury yacht has accommodation for 12 guests and 5,000nm range.
