Silverton Yachts Review: 39 Motor Yacht
- By Jay Coyle
- Updated: October 4, 2007
When the folks at Silverton decided to redesign their popular 392 Motor Yacht, they called on current owners and dealers for input. About half their typical buyers would opt for diesel power and cruise; the rest would go with standard gas power and spend the bulk of their time entertaining dockside.
All should be satisfied with the new Silverton 39 Motor Yacht. Unlike many comfort-driven boats, she gives up nothing in the way of performance, offers a thoughtful layout and boasts excellent detailing.
Her hull is based on a Michael Peters design. The wave-taming forward sections are parabolic: slightly convex near the chine and a bit rounder toward the keel. Sections abaft amidships are cambered, and the 13-degree transom deadrise seems an efficient choice. A hull-side step optimizes her planing surface without compromising interior volume.
I spent more than an hour running at speed and wiggling about dockside, and was impressed. She felt more like a small, high-performance convertible than a pleasure platform. Kudos to Silverton for keeping weight in check and controlling the center of gravity.
The builder offers a variety of gasoline and diesel engine options. While the roughly $45,000 premium for diesels may not appeal to some, I believe gasoline power is inappropriate for a vessel of this size and service-unless you intend to remain tethered.
Our test boat, fitted with 385 hp Caterpillar 3126s, delivered a top speed of 27.5 knots and a cruising speed of 21.3 knots at 2400 rpm. A 20-knot cruise would be important to me, so I would select these engines or the bigger Caterpillars.
The interior’s satin-finished, hardwood cherry cabinetwork, Corian counters, soft goods and fixtures are a notch above average. The L-shape sofa is not a slab-side built-in; it is a deep, custom-made affair covered in synthetic leather.
A pair of matching ottomans hidden cleverly within the cocktail table can serve as footrests or additional dinette seating. The entertainment center also is strategically positioned to serve guests on Silverton yachts.
It is a step down to the galley’s hardwood sole. There is plenty of counter space, and the polished stainless-steel sink is large enough to wash real plates. There is a cooktop, a microwave, an electric oven and dual-voltage refrigeration.
The master cabin is aft with an island berth and queen-size innerspring mattress. There is excellent stowage, and separate head and shower compartments flank a built-in cabinet and a shelf for a television.
The forward cabin has a queen-size berth, also with an innerspring mattress. A dual-access forward head with separate stall shower serves guests.
Silverton’s SideWalk exterior layout on Silverton yachts lets the skipper and crew move from the bridge to the bow with minimal effort. The bridge gates that lead to the side decks are an improvement from earlier models, which had pocket doors that tended to be wind driven. A three-position helm bench has flip-up bolsters. The control console is ergonomically satisfying with space for a reasonable complement of electronics. Additional bench seating is immediately abaft the helm.
The afterdeck, just steps away, has a built-in bench seat, a wet bar with ice maker, and space for deck chairs and a table. While a boarding area on the afterdeck is convenient, another just forward of amidships would be nice. Silverton considered a rail gate, but had safety concerns.
I would be remiss if I did not grouse about the ornamental approach to fender stowage on Silverton yachts. Fenders are not styling accessories. When mounted on the bow rail, as they are on the 39 Motor Yacht , they could run afoul with a piling if the captain is not cautious.
“Indeed, the fender baskets fall outside the gunwale dimensions, creating a potential docking hazard, said Michael Usina, Silverton’s director of marketing. “We are going to relocate the baskets to a yet-to-be determined location. They will continue to be topside for easy access.
The 39 Motor Yacht’s styling may be challenging to the traditional eye, but the boat is well proportioned and cleverly executed. She will no doubt be as popular as her predecessor, 600 of which were delivered between 1996 and 2001.
The 39 is built at Silverton’s Millville, New Jersey, production facility. She is laid up by hand with stitched and woven reinforcement, and polyester resin. The bottom is solid fiberglass, and Coremat is used in the hull-side laminate to minimize reinforcement print-through. Areas below the waterline receive a vinylester skin coat to reduce the chance of blistering. A network of fiberglass stingers and web frames is formed over wood, and bulkheads are plywood on these Silverton yachts. The hull-deck joint is bonded, mechanically fastened and fiberglassed from the inside where accessible. The gelcoat finish reflects the quality of Silverton’s tooling, and I was pleased to find frameless windows.
Access to the engine space is through the saloon sole, and equipment removal hatches are provided in case major work is required.
An 8kW generator with sound shield is forward in the engineroom. The generator is a bit out of the way, but there is additional access under the saloon steps. Bilges are finished, and mechanical installations appear well thought out and properly executed. Internal seawater strainers are hearty, there are dripless stuffing boxes, and an engine-mounting system incorporates steel foundation beams within the span between web frames.
Base price with the 385 hp Caterpillars is $330,765. Expect to pay about $416,000 with popular options and a Raymarine electronics package.

RM 1180: our 39-foot / 12m sailboat
When cruising rhymes with performance.
Should you be looking for a fast, elegant cruising yacht, capable of crossing either oceans or the next bay nearby, solo or with your family, the RM1180 will satisfy all these expectations. Just add charm and seduction on top.
Designed by Marc Lombard and developed by our internal engineering team, this fast and modern 39ft sailboat is one of a kind monohull, representing the perfect synthesis of our definition of a transatlantic (or any other ocean!) sailing yacht: breathtaking lines, remarkable performances, non-to-second comfort, not to mention environment-friendly construction in plywood and epoxy.
“An RM is all about stYle: you fall in love with her design”
A bluewater cruiser combining well-being and comfort
As soon as you enter the RM1180 saloon, you get the difference: soft and large companion way, unexpected feeling of space for a liveaboard sailing yacht of roughly 12m, omnipresent light, and 180-degree visibility.
Further down your visit, this feeling is reinforced: soft and dry atmosphere, without any condensation (consequence of the wood’s insulation capability), attention to ergonomics that make a difference in day-to-day life aboard, practicality of the U-shape galley, of a real-sized chart table, added to the soft and relaxing tones of the furniture: just breath, you’re in the RM1180.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Marc Lombard Design team perfectly understood our expectations: conceiving the best plywood-epoxy 39ft sailboat. The specifications below show a perfect balance between the boat’s metrics: displacement, hull power, sail plan, liveaboard volume.

Thanks to this virtual tour, you will get most of the RM1180: natural light, ergonomics, feeling of space. The only thing you won’t perceive is the atmosphere provided by the wooden interior design. Come and visit us for real!
Elegance and performance: a reference in her category
At first glance, the RM1180 sets the bar: racy lines, personalised hull colour, feeling of power and safety. Sails up, comes the 39-footer’s personality: well-balance helm, smooth sea motion, speed over ground, responsiveness.
When it comes to maneuvering, the deck plan of the RM1180 has been fine-tuned with a combination of ergonomics and fittings which together lead to a mix of performance and safety. A good example of this is the position of the winches. Centered in the middle of the cockpit, their height facilitates their use by a standing crew, for an optimum safety combined with ideal body posture.

WHAT WE SAY
Oyster’s first yacht designed solely for cruising, the 39 is a high volume, centre cockpit ketch, with a comfortable owner’s stateroom aft. She is extremely popular due to her class leading accommodation space, which is remarkable for a yacht of this size. One of the best known examples, 'Morningtown', was a radio relay vessel throughout the 1979 Fastnet storm and stayed at sea, without incident, in some of the UK's most severe weather. We launched forty-three of these Holman and Pye ketch designs between 1978 and 1984.

Inside the $40 million Bayesian yacht that capsized leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing
T he massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.
The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday morning.
The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 69, his daughter, Hannah, 18, have been recovered.
The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.
Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-ft British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.
When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 ft, earning it the award of best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, The Telegraph reported.
The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.
The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.
It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.
Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terracotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.
The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.
The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014 he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million or ($35 million).
The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.
It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s Ph.D. that later helped him build his empire.
The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13-15 knots (14-17 mph).
RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.
The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.
Steve Branagh, the managing director of RSB Rigging, told The Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Boat Test: 2024 Fjord 39 XP
- By Capt. Chris Caswell
- August 27, 2024
When looking at the Fjord 39 XP for the first time, gather up all your preconceived dayboat notions. Then toss them overboard. This is a delightful craft that breaks all the rules and is a fresh breath of dayboat air.
For starters, it manifests the slab-sided, plumb-bowed look now so common. If you’re still thinking classic sheerline or curving bow, you’re hopeless. But if you want a super-safe boat for kids, with a deck surrounded by 3-foot-tall teak-capped bulwarks with recessed handrails from stern to bow, think Fjord 39. Even better, its layout is all on one level, bow to stern, so there’s nothing to trip Aunt Edna.
This is a beamy boat at 12 feet, 8 inches, and Fjord makes the most of every inch. Six different layouts are offered: Our test boat offered a massive sun pad aft with walkways to the transom on each side and an extending shade from the hardtop. The backrests flip to create two-sided seating around a clever dining/snack/cocktail table with five folds to precisely fit many needs.
We tested the XP (outboard) Fjord with twin 400 hp Mercury V-10 Verados. An XL version is offered with twin 320 hp Volvo Penta sterndrives (440 hp optional). The Mercs booted us along at 43-ish mph, delivering quiet operation (81 decibels flat-out) for conversing or listening to music. Fuel efficiency proved remarkable.
Interior and Accessories
Just forward of the sun bed/dining district is a wide outdoor galley. The Fjord is preplumbed for up to five scattered fridges or ice makers, plus a wine cooler for oenophiles. The galley is owner’s choice: barbecue grill or induction cooktop, with lots of counter space, a big sink, and a lid to hide everything.
Of note, the entire area is shaded by an immense, impeccably molded fiberglass hardtop braced by sturdy curving supports that create a rock-solid sun/rain protector. And the massive windshield stretches from hardtop to dash.
The helm is a masterpiece of ergonomics, with either two or three adjustable seats with bolsters. We had two Simrad 16-inch monitors for navigation, engine and boat systems; the horizontal dash had a Merc joystick that can link to an optional Sidepower bow thruster; and you can reach everything while seated.
The wide and safe walk-arounds on each side of the helm console lead to another beautifully imagined space. In the bow, a hidden Quick anchor windlass has both bow and helm controls (with counter) and full chain rode to the stainless-steel Lewmar plow anchor. Facing forward, guests can sprawl on the wide sun pad with armrest/rails for security.
Everyone, especially families, will love the goodies hidden under the seemingly low cabin house. Surprise—6 feet, 5 inches of headroom! If you decide to spend the night aboard, you don’t have to rough it.
For starters, the berth is huge: At 7 feet by 6 feet, 1 inch, it’s within 3 inches of full king size. But what is of more interest is the very civilized head with sink, Jabsco electric toilet and—ta-da—a separate and spacious (35-by-30-inch) stall shower with teak flooring. There is ample space for the usual duties, plus changing clothes, showering off, and starting fresh.
Underway, the Fjord 39 XP is just a giggle. Crank the leather-padded wheel hard over, and the Fjord just leans into the turn like an F-35 fighter jet looking for its prey. I can attribute this to the deep-V hull with hard chines and twin strakes nearly to the bow, which give it a solid bite on the water and no outboard cavitation. Wanna put the hammer down? We forgot to turn on the Humphree Interceptor trim tabs, but the Fjord came up flat naturally, giving the skipper a clear view of the horizon. Top speed? A squinch over 37 knots.
Once I’d scouted the basics, I started finding some immensely likable details, such as deck and cabinet lockers everywhere, with deep gutters to handle biblical rain. Inset into the bulwark next to the helm are brackets to hold the six custom Fjord fenders out of the way but ready, and they’re square, so they won’t wander around when you need hull protection. And it’s a little detail, but one that says quality: leather drawer pulls in the cabin, as well as soft-close drawers. I’m finicky about bilges, and Fjord finishes them as though you’re going to be eating there.
The combination swim ladder/passerelle needs to be seen. At the touch of a button, the swim ladder extends underwater, unfolding the steps at just the right angle. It can then be raised far above the water (a railing drops into place) to make a passerelle gangway for easy boarding, even from high docks and quays.
Shopping? Check out the Pardo 38 ($819,000). It’s a foot shorter but with triple Merc 300s, no shower stall, and an optional second cabin.
Fjord construction by Germany’s Hanse Yachts is impeccable, with vacuum-bagged vinylester (no blisters!) resin backed by foam coring for strength and insulation. Not a squeak or groan, even in the Gulf Stream.
Read Next: Five Powerboat Trends of Europe
It’s no surprise that the Fjord 39 XP is in demand as a tender for large yachts: seaworthy, dry, and well-built, with safe high sides and a good turn of speed. It will appeal to families for the same reasons.

Over 90 years ago the first Hinckley yachts took to the waters of Southwest Harbor, Maine, quickly gaining a reputation for incredible strength, seaworthiness and – a rarity then as now – exceptional craftsmanship with a simple, elegant beauty that turned heads in every harbor. Today Hinckley remains at the forefront of integrating the latest technologies. Carbon fiber has now replaced fiberglass. Our highly protected single bond, vacuum-infusion process chemically bonds carbon and epoxy from bow to stern for incredible strength and durability. At the helm, JetStick 4 provides smooth and intuitive maneuverability through busy harbors with ease. The embrace of technological advancements and our deeply held, time-honored commitment to doing things the right way define what a Hinckley yacht is today.
