PRIOR TO DEPARTING FOR AN ADVENTUROUS PACIFIC CRUISE, 85M EXPEDITION YACHT BOLD WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW, HELD FROM 24 TO 27 MARCH. HILL ROBINSON SPEAKS TO CAPTAIN TODD LEECH ABOUT HOW THE YACHT PROVIDES THE IDEAL PLATFORM FROM WHICH TO EXPLORE SUCH DESTINATIONS.

Aptly described as the Range Rover Sport pickup truck of the yachting world, 85m expedition yacht Bold’s entire operation revolves around the activities that it facilitates. As Captain Todd Leech sees it, Bold is more of a tool than a yacht.

“She’s a means to have adventures,”  Captain Todd explains.  “Our huge aft deck allows us to load any toy or tender you could wish for with minimal planning and effort. Unlike most superyachts, we don’t have to spend three hours packing up and loading into a hidden tender bay because we’ve got all the space ready to go.”

Designed with charter in mind, Bold’s ideal client was originally presumed to be adults looking to party and adventure. Since she hit the market in 2019, however, the yacht is also proving very popular amongst young families.  “Every area is a wet area, so it lends itself very well to entertaining children,”  adds Captain Todd.  “They can paint and throw water balloons nearly anywhere on the boat and it’s not an issue.”

Bold’s crew have been carefully selected due to their interest in water sports, travel and adventure, and at times the line between guests and crew is blurred as the crew will often join any excursions or activities. With some proficient photographers and drone operators amongst the team, it’s the perfect opportunity to document the guest experiences and capture those once-in-a-lifetime memories.

“We make some great videos for our charter guests,”  says Captain Todd.  “We have two big screens on board, one in the helicopter hanger and one in the main saloon, which means we can shoot footage during the day and play it back that evening while the guests are relaxing or enjoying drinks and dinner.”

While Bold’s aft deck is focused on fun and adventure – carrying a helicopter, three tenders, three Sea-Doos, two laser sailing dinghies and much, much more – the guest spaces provide a distinct separation from the operational aspects. With an interior designed to feel like a New York loft apartment, the disassociation between the utilitarian aft deck and the three other guest decks is dramatic.

When all the toys are launched, the aft deck also transforms into an expansive space for guests to make use of. Another unique aspect is that Bold features eight guest suites, providing flexible room configuration options for larger charter groups or extra space for supernumeraries – a rarity for yachts of this size.

Pivotal to Bold’s ability to be enjoyed anywhere in the world, no matter the climate, is its winter garden. Aft of the owner’s deck and featuring floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, the generous space can be transformed into an open terrace in the sun by simply folding away the windows. In cold, wet or windy weather, however, the windows can be tightly shut to provide protection while bathing the space in natural light and maintaining a close connection with the surrounding environment.

The winter garden will come into its own as the yacht ventures to colder climes. As we speak with Captain Todd, he is preparing to take Bold through the Panama Canal and down to Patagonia, where the yacht will stay for six weeks of cruising. With Patagonia’s spectacular scenery and clear skies at this time of year, he anticipates that Bold’s helicopter will be in frequent use!

After Patagonia, Bold will visit the Galapagos and head up the West Coast into British Columbia and Alaska for the summer season – destinations that Captain Todd is particularly excited about. “I’m looking forward to putting the bow underneath a glacier waterfall in Alaska,” he reflects. “As well as the heli-skiing opportunities in British Columbia – we’ve got two helipads on board, so we are likely to hire another helicopter and really make the most of that.”

BOLD will be available for viewings at the Palm Beach International Boat Show from March 24th to 27th, 2022 at Slip C124.  Book your viewing here.

Vripack unveils 85m expedition superyacht concept Liquid Silver

Marnix Hoekstra of Dutch designer Vripack spoke to us at the Monaco Yacht Show about an 85m evolution of its landmark expedition superyacht Dione Sky (ex- Turmoil ).

The Liquid Silver concept, which was inspired by the first true expedition superyacht Dione Sky (and was originally known as Turmoil II ), retains the practicalities of this much smaller design, but wraps them in a less utilitarian-looking superstructure. It is a progression that Hoekstra believes represents the future of superyachts.

‘I think in the future boats will be hybrids like this,’ says Hoekstra, Vripack sales director, ‘the boxes boats were originally put into – you have a boat for this, a boat for that – that will disappear. People don’t want to stay in a harbour all the time any more, they want to have the capability to go to very remote places, but they won’t only have to do that in a boat which looks like a research vessel.’

Many previous Vripack projects such as 46m Dione Sky and 37m Axantha featured a typical research vessel shape - high bow, then aft a deck space for tenders with a low sheerline, rising further aft to the height of the superstructure.

‘Our designers said if we extend the bow into the superstructure, the boat becomes differently balanced – and from a very functional point of view. A lot of owners today don’t want to see their tenders, or they want to cover their tenders during an ocean crossing because you get heavy weather. ‘

Liquid Silver 's forecastle is directly connected to the owner’s deck, making the lines cleaner and while retaining the practical location of the boat deck, it is simply enclosed. The design also allows efficient routing of crew around the boat, as well as a dedicated crew deck above the waterline but under the main deck.

New Titanic expedition images show major decay. But see the team's 'exciting' discovery.

L ying at the bottom of the North Atlantic, the remains of the Titanic are showing signs of deterioration. Researchers found in a new expedition that a portion of railing had fallen from the iconic bow of the ship, where characters Jack and Rose "fly" in the 1997 "Titanic" film.

The Titanic expedition was the first to venture down to the site of the Titanic since the Titan submersible disaster that claimed the lives of five people last summer . RMS Titanic Inc., which holds the legal rights to salvage from the wreckage of the ship, launched a team of videographers, photographers, scientists and historians in July to document the current state of the wreckage.

The ship sank after hitting an iceberg in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, on its very first voyage. More than 1,500 people on board died. Since then, public fascination with its remains has endured, and the researchers have taken several trips to the bottom of the sea to photograph and explore the ship, the last of which was in 2010.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Over 2 million photos taken during the 20-day 2024 expedition revealed new evidence of deterioration of the Titanic, the researchers said.

The railing around the bow of the ship was missing a 15-foot section on the port time, the team discovered on July 29. It had previously been intact in 2010. Photographs from previous expeditions to the wreckage site showed the evolution of "rusticles and sea life" on the railing of the bow. The missing piece is now lying on the sea floor.

"Although Titanic’s collapse is inevitable, this evidence strengthens our mission to preserve and document what we can before it is too late," RMS Titanic Inc. said on its website.

Titanic graphics: There are still secrets to be found on sunken ship

'Lost' statue rediscovered

The team hoped to find a statue that once "embodied Titanic’s palatial design" as the centerpiece of the ship's first class lounge while it was afloat. When the ship went down, the lounge was torn apart and the "Diana of Versailles" statue was lost in the debris field.

The 2-foot bronze statue depicts the Roman goddess of wild animals, Diana. The statue was spotted in photos taken during a 1986 expedition, "but a tradition of secrecy around the Titanic wreck ensured her location would remain unknown," the RMS Titanic Inc. said. After days of searching, the team on its final day of the expedition finally located the statue and was able to photograph it with detail "not seen in 112 years."

"The discovery of the statue of Diana was an exciting moment," RMS Titanic Inc. Director of Collections Tomasina Ray said in a news release.

The RMS Titanic Inc. researchers said ahead of their trip that they were sending remote-operated vehicles, or ROVs, to collect data and take photographs with underwater cameras but were not sending any manned vehicles down.

Famous Titanic explorer, lost in submersible disaster, honored

The company launching this year's expedition, RMS Titanic Inc., said it held a memorial service for Paul-Henri Nargeolet and all the lives lost on both the Titan submersible and the Titanic. Nargeolet was a famous Titanic expert and deep-water explorer who went down to the Titanic wreckage 37 times.

Nargeolet, 73, was on board the sub Titan when it imploded during a trip to the Titanic on June 18, 2023 . He would have been part of this summer's expedition as RMS Titanic Inc.'s director of underwater research.

Titan's disappearance captivated international attention during a frantic four-day search of the waters after a support ship lost contact with the sub. The submersible was scheduled to go down on a two-hour trip 2.5 miles down to the wreckage site, but it never resurfaced. On board were Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate; Nargeolet, the French explorer; British pilot and adventurer Hamish Harding, 58; Shahzada Dawood, 48, a Pakistani-British businessman and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood.

On June 22, the U.S. Coast Guard announced it had located a debris field and that the Titan had imploded, killing all its occupants.

Nargeolet's family last month filed a wrongful death lawsuit for $50 million against OceanGate, which operated the Titan submersible.

What to Expect

To make the most of what this expedition has to offer, the trip will be active, requiring you to be in good health and physical condition and able to keep up with the group without assistance from tour staff. The schedule will include long days, with some early departures, and activities scheduled throughout the day and into the evening.

In the Galápagos, daily excursions usually include two shore excursions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each lasting two to three hours and usually a snorkeling opportunity every day. On some days the shore excursions can require up to two hours of walking, often over loose rocks and uneven terrain where stairs are unavailable or do not have handrails, and standing, often in the warm sun. Travel from the ship to the landing sites will be in pangas (large, motorized rubber boats). For these shore excursions, travelers, with assistance from the ship’s crew, must be able to step from the ship to the panga and vice versa, and the water can sometimes be choppy. There will be wet landings where you step off the panga into the water and walk a short distance through shallow water to shore. During the shore excursions there will be opportunities to hike, kayak, swim, and snorkel. The degree of difficulty will be described in daily briefings, and all activities are optional, so each traveler may choose the activity level that best suits his or her ability. Please note that the Isabela II does not have an elevator.

This promises to be a memorable journey, but as with all travel, a flexible attitude, a spirit of adventure, and a willingness to explore new areas will enhance your enjoyment of this program. You do not have to participate in all the scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination. We are sure you will be pleased with the exciting educational program provided, but we want you to be aware of the pace and activity level.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.
