50m Defoe yacht Alicia pictured on sea trials after three year refit

The 50 metre classic superyacht Alicia has been pictured on sea trials in the Solent just days after emerging from her mammoth three year renovation.  Alicia was relaunched on August 14 from the Southampton Marine yard after beginning the refit in 2015.

The yacht underwent “major structural works” at the yard, including the complete rebuild of her systems. She was also treated to a completely new aluminium superstructure and hull. Design Unlimited undertook the interior design and exterior styling while Canark Marine undertook the naval architecture.

The yard said that Alicia , which was launched in the 1930s as one of the eight yachts to be built by US yard Defoe , had been restored to the splendour of her era. SMS Group chief executive Peter Morton described the yacht as “unquestionably beautiful” and said the launch was “a major positive milestone in another huge refit project.”

Alicia is the third iconic superyacht refit for the yard following Sir Charles Dunstone’s Shemara and Lord Sugar’s Lady A .

“The project has seen the best of British design, innovation and engineering and we now look forward to a successful period of trials pre-handover,” he added.

Meanwhile the owner of Alicia complimented the yard on a job well done. “Refitting  Alicia  in the UK was the right call and it has been an absolute delight; the end result will be something that we can all be very proud of – she’s fantastic, she’s British – and she’s truly unique. For many years to come she’ll be a big part of our family,” he said.

After undergoing sea trials in the Solent, Alicia is expected to head for the Mediterranean and join 300 of the world’s most beautiful modern and classic yachts for the 20th Les Voiles de Saint Tropez in September.

One of Britain's richest men has been spotted in his newly refurbished 1930's super-yacht - named after his daughter who was tragically killed.

Ian Wace, 55, who has a net worth of £505m, was spotted on board the Alicia, previously known as the Janidore.

The multi-millionaire hedge-fund manager has recently taken back the vintage vessel after it underwent a three-year refurbishment.

It was released following a christening ceremony where it was re-named in honour of Mr Wace's daughter Alicia, who died in a car crash aged 11 months alongside his son Guy, four, and wife Joanna, 34.

Images showed him getting off the vessel after it docked in Dartmouth, Devon.

The 50-metre classic yacht emerged following a major refit at the Southampton Marine yard after work began in 2015.

The ship's systems were rebuilt and the yacht underwent "major structural works".

The yard said that Alicia, which was originally launched in the 1930s as one of the eight yachts to be built by US yard Defoe, had been restored to 'the splendour of her era'.

Alicia is the third iconic super-yacht refit for the yard following Sir Charles Dunstone’s Shemara and Lord Sugar’s Lady A.

Mr Wace's boat also bears more than a passing similarity to James Dyson's 250ft Nahlin. In 2010 it also emerged from a lengthy refit and was pictured pulling in to the same Devon port.

The Nahlin, once owned by newly succeeded King Edward VIII was built in 1930 and boasted six guest staterooms with en-suite bathrooms, a special ladies' sitting room, a gym and a library.

The ship found fame when the royal chose to take his married lover Wallis Simpson on an extended cruise around Eastern Europe.

Mr Wace has now followed in James Dyson's footsteps and has had his own 1930s motor yacht professionally restored and birthed in the same port.

Mr Wace is the chief executive officer, chief risk officer, and founding partner of London's Marshall Wace hedge fund.

He became a successful businessman after witnessing the haunting death of his first wife and their two young children.

Speaking in 2011 Wace said: "The motivating force of my life was the accident.

"It's no use avoiding it - it's the elephant in the room. Something terrible happened to people very dear to me.

"It is what it is, I can't undo it. But a positive force did emerge, in Ark, and I'm happy to be part of that."

Peter Morton, the CEO of The SMS Group, described the yacht as “unquestionably beautiful” and said the launch was “a major positive milestone in another huge refit project.

He said: “The project has seen the best of British design, innovation and engineering and we now look forward to a successful period of trials pre-handover."

“Today’s launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for The SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers.

"It’s big, big news.

"As a company, we are genuinely thrilled to have had the inspiration and support of another truly exceptional British businessman; and whilst the project has been challenging the end result is simply outstanding.

"MY Alicia is unquestionably beautiful.

“MY Alicia, MY Shemara and MY Lady A were all managed by SMS in a totally transparent and honest way – working directly with the owner.

"This ensures the very best value for money and complete control of the project; owners are therefore, masters of their own destiny, which is so very important to all those involved.

alicia super yacht

"In this case, it was the owner’s vision that has inspired the growth and creation of a business as opposed to just another project; we’re extremely grateful and look forward to very many future successful projects.”

The christening of MY Alicia was caught on camera by Jacek Prawdzik, who also shared many pictures of the boat on social media.

On deck two other boats can be seen, one a motorboat and the other by sail, and a tender is located towards the front of the vessel.

As per tradition, a bottle of champagne was broken on the hull - although it took a few attempts for the bottle to its target. There was also a well-stocked bar at the event.

Alicia is now expected to head for the Mediterranean and join modern and classic yachts for the 20th Les Voiles de Saint Tropez in September.

SMS completes three-year restoration of classic 50m superyacht

M/y 'alicia' will now undergo a period of sea trials for two weeks before heading to st. tropez….

SMS Group, the British engineering and refit specialist, has announced that 50m M/Y Alicia has officially been launched following a three-year restoration project at its Southampton shipyard. Having now completed three iconic superyacht refits, SMS now finds itself being recognised as a key facility for classic yacht restoration.

Originally built by the US shipyard Defoe Shipbuilding Company in 1930, the owner had one very clear objective for M/Y Alicia ; to retain her heritage and restore the yacht to her original design – with the addition of modern technologies.

“It was really a restoration project from the keel up,” says director, Nicholas Warren, “The owner fell in love with the original boat, which was originally M/Y Janidore and wanted to retain the classic traditional design of the boat.

“Throughout the vessel’s history she’s had good and bad refits, good conversions and bad ones, but what was absolutely key to the owner is that she was reinvigorated along the lines of the original vessel,” continues Warren. “So, all of the effort and energy went into ensuring that the boat that is on the water today, while it ticks the aspirations in terms of interior layout and the focus on his family, stays true to the original as much as possible.”

On such an extensive project, one might be forgiven for thinking that a new build would be more appropriate route to take. However, in this case, it was down to the owner’s fondness for the original 1930s vessel that played a vital role in the decision to redevelop the original vessel.

“The owner has a genuine passion for the history of the vessel,” Warren explains. “While he could easily have taken a picture of the vessel and gone to a shipyard and asked them to build it, the owner had a desire to keep as much of the original boat as possible, while ensuring that their investment is secure for the future. So, the effort and energy that goes through the ship’s systems, from the propulsion to the air conditioning is in effect modern, but he wants to retain as much of the original heritage and tradition as is possible.”

“The launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for the SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers,”  - Peter Morton, CEO of the SMS Group.

During the build, SMS and the owner recycled as many of the materials from the original build as possible. But, when these materials were unsalvageable, the owner externally sourced materials from the 1930s in order to maintain the authentic appearance of the vessel.

“The launch is a major positive milestone in another huge refit project for the SMS Group, all our colleagues and all our suppliers,” says Peter Morton, CEO of the SMS Group. “It’s big, big news. As a company we are genuinely thrilled to have had the inspiration and support of another truly exceptional British businessman; and whilst the project has been challenging, the end result is simply outstanding. M/Y Alicia is unquestionably beautiful”.

The owner played a vital role in the success of the project and comments of his delight of the work done by SMS. “Refitting Alicia in the UK was the right call and it has been an absolute delight,” comments the owner. “The end result will be something that we can all be very proud of - she’s fantastic, she’s British - and she’s truly unique.  For many years to come she’ll be a big part of our family”.

Now that the yacht has officially been launched and sits outside of the yard, the mast and rig will be fitted to the vessel, along with some final exterior outfitting. Alicia will then undergo the trials and commissioning period for two weeks before heading to  St. Tropez in time for the classic regatta at the end of September.

Following on from this significant project, SMS have more work in the. “We have a couple of very big projects happening in the commercial space at the moment, we’re looking at a work boat and a very large pontoon and with the superyachts we are looking at another classic to come in behind Alicia. In the interim we are actually carrying out another refit and restoration programme for the owner of Alicia on an old Thames barge,” concludes Warren.
