Gerry Douglas will lead us on a tour of the Catalina facility. This is bound to be great field trip and very informative. Learn what goes into taking a boat all the way from an idea through design to actually building a modern sailboat. In addition to being an SPSA member and St. Petersburg Classic Regatta sponsor chairman, Gerry is a naval architect. He is the Chief Operating Officer and head of design for Catalina Yachts, Inc. What a great opportunity for us!!

The address of the Catalina Yachts facility is 7200 Bryan Dairy Rd., Largo, FL 33777. The facility is actually off and to the south of Bryan Dairy Rd. We will meet in the Catalina lobby at 10 am.

From northbound I-275, take Exit 30 (Roosevelt Blvd./118th Ave. N.), stay to the left and loop back over I-275 going west, follow the signs to 118th Ave. N., this becomes Bryan Dairy Rd. Go past, 49th Street, US 19 and 66th Street. After 66th Street, stay in the left lane; make the 3rd “U” turn (just past 72nd St.). Get in the right lane and look for a small “Catalina” sign on a street sign post. Turn right there, onto the Catalina driveway which is about 1/4 mile long. Continue to the Administration bldg. on the left.

5 part construction series.

Catalina has introduced many important innovations over the years and their evolution coalesced nicely with the introduction of the 5 Part Construction Series.

There are five main components:

• Hull – solid glass and vinylester below the waterline and topsides cored with balsa.
• Structural grid – a one piece engineered fibreglass structural grid beneath the cabin sole – from stem to stern, this grid adds important torsional stiffness and bears and disperses the torque loads from the engine, mast compression, tank supports and enables wire runs down the longitudinal beams.
• Hull Liner – one piece that houses the furniture – with exception to where the tie rods are affixed to an aluminium beam tabbed into the hull absorbing the load from the rigging.
• Deck liner –  one piece moulded structure that creates a continuous cavity – great for sound and thermal insulation
• Deck – Balsa-cored except where winches and other gear are mounted above glassed in aluminium plates.

Unique Features of the Five Part Construction Series:

Strike Zone; this is a watertight compartment forward of the forward bulkhead that will prevent water ingress should you run up on a half submerged object such as a container.

Secure Socket chain plate system, built primarily of 316 stainless steel and is designed to resolve rigging loads through the deck into the hull and tie rod structural support system.  The ball and socket tie rods allow perfect alignment of loads to the hull structure.  The lower ends of the tie rods are secured to a longitudinal structural aluminium beam glasses into the glassed into the boat’s structural grid; this system also helps to prevent deck leaks around the chainplates.

T-BeamMastStep structure, the mast is deck-stepped with a large compression post beneath it, which transfers compression loads to the internal grid and the keel. Thus providing all the benefits of a deck stepped mast and the strength of a keel stepped mast.  The compression post passes through the deck and welded to the mast with stand-pipe for through deck wiring.  This support system completely relieves the deck of compression loads that can cause gel coat cracking and leaks.  Only metal components are in compression from the masthead to the structural grid system.

DeepDefense rudder system, The rudder blade is hand laminated in asymmetrical moulds designed with a moulded in leading edge eliminating a venerable seam on the centreline, creating an exceptional strong part of the rudder most subject to impact damage of compression from grounding.

October 2011 Catalina 385 is introduced at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD.

January 2012 The Catalina 385 is named SAIL Magazine’s “Best New Boat”.

October 2012 The Catalina 315 is introduced at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD.

January 2013 The Catalina 315 wins Cruising World’s “Boat of the Year” as Best In-Shore Cruiser and SAIL Magazine’s “Best New Boat Award”.

October 2013 The Catalina 275 Sport is introduced at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD.

January 2014 The Catalina 275 Sport wins Cruising World’s “Best Pocket Cruiser” and Sailing Worlds “Best Recreational Racer”, the first time the same boat has won both awards in 33 years.

January 2014 Catalina 355 #100 is delivered to Sail Place, Inc. for Strictly Sail Chicago show.

May 2014 Catalina 445 #100 is delivered to Little Yacht Sales in Texas.

October 2016 The much anticipated Catalina 425 makes a world debut at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD.

Gemini Catamarans on the Move

Gemini Catamarans in September shifted its boat-building operations to the Catalina Yachts facility in Largo, Florida.

Since 2010, the company had been building its current model, the Gemini Legacy 35, in partnership with Hunter Marine, and then Marlow Hunter in Alachua, Florida.

Gemini Catamarans , now a part of the Catamaran Group, got its start in 1981 when Brits Tony and Sue Smith set up shop in Mayo, Maryland, where they built the Telstar trimaran and early Gemini models. Eventually, production was moved to a new yard, where Performance Cruising, Inc. continued to build multihulls, including the popular Gemini 105M.

By 2008 and 2009, faced with stricter environmental regulations and the affect of the global recession on boat sales, the company evolved to become Gemini Catamarans, joined the Catamaran Group and Tony’s daughter, Laura Smith Hershfeld, took over as president. The company’s present model, the Gemini Legacy 35, was launched in 2013, and to date, 44 have been built, bringing the total number of Geminis sold to 1,193.

In a release announcing the move of production to Catalina, Laura said, “The choice was easy as Catalina’s philosophy mirrors our own. The success of our Gemini has been the balance of tradition and innovation coupled with actively soliciting feedback from our owners and our dealers. She was designed to be what my father called ‘every man’s’ Gemini, and we strive to keep her as fast, fun and obtainable as she has been for the last three decades.”
