The kids are saying ‘GYAT’: What does it mean?

What’s GYAT, how do you pronounce it ... and should you be saying it in the first place?

Take note: It's not a G-rated word.

GYAT (which rhymes with “squat” or “bought,” or “Fiat” depending on your pronunciation of the “g”), can be an acronym for “Girl Your A** Thicc” or an abbreviation for “goddamn,” according to Bark , an online monitoring company that tracks teenage slang.

Believe it not, it's a compliment.

Urban Dictionary explains that “ GYAT " is used when complimenting someone with a curvaceous body, while “ GYATT " (spelled with two Ts), describes a man or woman with a large butt.

Dictionary.com has a more general definition: “Gyatt or gyat is a slang term that is used to express strong excitement, surprise, or admiration.”

Brush up on the latest teen slang

  • What is ‘preppy’? The old slang has a new meaning
  • Why does your kid call you 'bruh'?
  • What does rizz mean?

Where does GYAT come from?

"Dayum is a stylized way of saying damn, usually used to indicate surprise, with humorous intent, rather than in response to injury,”  John H McWhorter , an associate linguistics professor at Columbia University, tells  TODAY.com . “It was originally a southern Black pronunciation, exaggerated for effect.”

"Gyat" emerges from similar origins.

“GYAT evolved from ‘goddamn,’” explains McWhorter. “Specifically, a heightened way of saying it has always been ‘GOT-damn!’ which GYAT is based on.”

Kelly Elizabeth Wright, a postdoctoral research fellow in language sciences at Virginia Tech, tells TODAY.com: "It appears there are several competing theories for the provenance of this term, and because of this, there are also conflicting opinions on what type of term it is. Some consider this to be Black Southern, others Jamaican, and still others more generally Black ... there are many places where those traditions overlap."

She adds, "If you were to ask me what community seems to be using it the most currently, I’d place it with younger, online gamers."

According to Wright, "GYAT is one of hundreds of nominees for 2023 Word of The Year, an annual vote held by the American Dialect Society."

How kids these days are using ‘GYAT'

We can thank Gen Alpha — those born after 2012 — for putting “GYAT/TT” on our radar.

“Kids start using this type of slang as they embark on independence from their parents and gravitate toward their peer groups and form their own identities,” David Burke, aka “ Slangman “ and co-host of the podcast “Slingin’ The Slang!” tells TODAY.com.

Teens use GYAT verbally and on social media and messaging platforms like TikTok, Twitch, Discord and YouTube. Slang like GYAT can start a conversation or be shorthand to get around electronic character limits.

Burke says GYAT is not an insult.

“If someone says, “Wow you have a GYAT” it doesn’t mean, “You have a big butt,” he explains. “It means you have a big beautiful butt.”

Can parents say ‘GYAT?’

Sorry, but no.

Burke says it’s important for parents to be able to interpret teen code to make sure they engage in safe behavior, but the lingo is “age-stamped.”

“If parents start using GYAT, teens will stop,” he says.

Dropping “GYAT” in any conversation — especially in a group of kids — will embarrass most teens, says Titania Jordan, CMO of Bark.us. She adds, “There’s a fine line between being a cool or ' cringe ' parent."

It's better to bring up the topic in private.

“Inquire in a joking manner or type it in a text message to your teen and see how they respond,” suggests Jordan. “Parents can also make it a game by asking their teen to quiz them about slang.”

In most cases, your curiosity will be hilarious to your kid.

“Either way, you’re bonding,” says Jordan. “However that happens with teens is a win.”

A Millennial Mom’s Guide To Generation Alpha Slang

generation-alpha

“…Back in my day, our calculators only did math and spelled ‘boobs’ upside down … none of this smartphone business — we had to wait until after 9:00 pm to call our friends — you could get knocked out of their Top 8 at any moment…”

Did your kid say their friend has “rizz?” And did you wonder if it was contagious?

Have you heard “it’s giving…” and you don’t know what that means?

You’re not alone. As a millennial parent, I convinced myself I wouldn’t embarrass my kid. After all, I’m not a regular mom; I’m a cool mom! However, in a time when “Mean Girls” has become a musical, I realized I wasn’t as fetch as I once thought among today’s youth.

Dubbed “Generation Alpha,” the youngest generation generally spans those born in the early 2010s. But I didn’t even have Generation Alpha on my radar until my kid started talking like a viral TikTok video I’d never seen.

Do you want to know what the latest generation slang is, too? Rooted in terms my own kid has used quite often, here are a few common Gen Alpha slang terms.

The Oxford Dictionary’s 2023 Word of the Year, “rizz” means charm, attractiveness, or charisma — especially regarding a person’s romantic charm. The term is credited to YouTuber Kai Cenat . If a person has rizz, that they’ve got game. Just ask Zendaya.

2. Fanum tax

Gamer and Internet personality, Fanum , snagged a cookie from friend Cenat’s plate on the popular game streaming platform Twitch, coining it the “Fanum tax.” Joey from “Friends” would never pay the Fanum tax.

This is shorthand for “suspicious.”

A “noob” is an unskilled person, especially when it comes to technology.

5. Cap/No Cap

People use the word “cap” and “no cap” to affirm someone is telling the truth. The phrase “No cap” means it’s true and “cap” means it’s a lie.

Cringe refers to something awkward or embarrassing like its root word. For example: “It is so cringe to write an article on generational slang.”

https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExcmE4aWo5emhqcnlpamNha3Vnc3UyMGEzaWJpaWdweHppY2VhaDMwOSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/iOpXLPW8bsg5NKiNP4/giphy-downsized.gif

7. It’s Giving

Kids use this to describe the vibe or energy something provides. For example, I’d describe the unfortunate current floral maxi dress trend as “it’s giving Little House on the Prairie vibes.” I said what I said.

To “roast” someone means you jokingly tease or insult them.

9. Drip

If you have “drip,” you have a cool or trendy sense of style. For example, if your outfit “slays,” it also “drips.”

Pronounced “gee-yacht,” this word describes someone with a trendily curvy body. For example, Demi Lovato could be a “GYAT,” or you could describe them as GYAT. This word mimics the phrase “PHAT,” which is an acronym for “pretty, hot, and tempting.”

11. Ohio

Ohio just means really weird sh*t. My former uterine tenant wasn’t into geography, so upon hearing “Ohio” referenced often, I needed to know. If you’re from Ohio, please don’t come for me. In all fairness, if we had an American state that epitomized oddities, I’d have guessed Florida.

Like many Gen Alpha slang terms, “delulu” is shorthand for “delusional.”

This word is short for “solution.”

14. Skibidi

Saving the best (or worst) for last, “skibidi” is short for Skibidi Toilet, an interesting YouTube video series featuring toilets with human heads intent on world domination. It means “evil”. Y’all can uh, Google that one. I’d like to sleep tonight.

15. Algospeak

Finally, here’s your last vocabulary lesson: “algospeak.” While not exclusive to our newest generation, they’ve embraced it! To avoid bans or other restrictions, social media users speak in coded terms or substitute characters in words. For example, if the Gen Alpha kids in your life suddenly discuss corn…well, let’s just say they’re likely not discussing the vegetable.

Honestly, there’s no need to inquire about the early bird specials quite yet; we aren’t that old. It’s simply our turn in the game. And I, for one, am ready! Generation Alpha kids has the world on their shoulders the way we did, and our parents before us, each hoping the next generation would make changes and make the world a better place. In each of our own ways, we’ve done that.

So, as I might be unsure why my kid tells me I’m “acting like AI irl,” I’m sure they’re on the right track. And just in time too; my brows are finally on fleek.

gyat [ gee -yot ]

What does gyatt mean?

Gyatt or gyat is a slang term that is used to express strong excitement, surprise, or admiration. Gyatt is most commonly used as an exclamation in reaction to seeing a large butt (that is, the buttocks ) and may be used as a noun to mean a large butt.

The slang gyatt is an exclamation used to express excitement or shock, especially in reaction to seeing large buttocks or a voluptuous woman. It is often used as a hashtag in videos of curvy women or, much less often, men.

As a noun, gyatt is typically used to mean a large butt.

Example: Did you see the models in that video? GYATT

The slang gyatt is often used as a synonym of the exclamation goddamn to mean surprise or shock.

Since at least the later 2000s, gyat and gyatt have been used online as alternate spellings of the word god in the phrase god damn . It is occasionally paired with dayam for “damn.”

The popularization of the slang gyatt as a synonym of goddamn and its association with large butts is often credited to Twitch streamer YourRAGE. As early as 2021, YourRAGE often loudly shouted gyat in reaction to voluptuous women in his videos. His viewers would mimic his behavior and spam GYAT or variations of it in chat in response to attractive women.

The gyatt slang spread to other social media platforms, where it was similarly used as a positive exclamation to react to attractive women or as a noun to mean a large butt. The #gyatt hashtag is often used with videos featuring voluptuous women.

What Is A 'Bop Female'? How Gen Z Redefined The 'Bop' Slang On TikTok Explained

Back in 2016, Bop was a popular internet slang mainly used to describe a catchy song (similar to a " banger "). But "bop" has been around for generations with several different interpretations, including one used to refer to a promiscuous woman , the "Bop female."

Usage of the slang "bop" in derogative connotation toward women dates back decades ago and we'll explain how Gen Z dug into the past to come up with a "new" meaning to it.

What Does 'Bop Female' Mean on TikTok?

Before the music-centered meaning, "bop" was also an African American Vernacular English (AAVE) slang term since the early 2000s, receiving the earliest mention on Urban Dictionary in June 2005, by user @Eyebis, who described the term as "a name to call a female who gives head to anyone. They call them a bop because when they give head they bop their heads."

In general, a "bop female" is somebody, mostly women, who posts their body on the internet or "somebody who just be getting around with everybody, who be linking with every dude, who be around all the dudes," as TikTok user @hackedbyksgen12 explained in May 2023.

Why Gen Z Are Calling Some Women A 'Bop Female'?

Search interest about the meaning of the term "bop" increased in 2023 and 2024, as it became highly used by Gen Z on TikTok videos referring to a promiscuous woman .

For example, TikTok user @therealldesiree posted in March 2024 a video (shown below, left) with the quote "he left you for a what?" while lip-dubbing a song saying the slang "bop." In February, TikTok user @theiiprod posted a video explaining what "bop" means for the new generation and when it is used to refer to a woman (shown below, right).

How The 'Bop Female' Slang Is Used In Memes?

In May 2023, the Black Girl Confidence Bop meme went viral on TikTok, in which @realistichuman, a white person, appears dancing to the song "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae under the caption, "This song is such a little Black girl confidence bop." The video became the subject of criticism, reactions and parodies, like @potheadmelly's post, who reacted to the video (shown below, left).

A few months after the "Black Girl Confidence Bop" meme, the Lala Bop slang term grew popular on TikTok, which is another way of calling women "promiscuous." In September 2023, TikToker @1alab0preal posted a slideshow set to the "Lalabop" song consisting of two slides that read "lala bop" followed by a photo of a tagged, now-deleted TikToker, captioned, "This is Izzy. She got passed around by the friendgroup, she a th0t, and she lost her v-card at 13, she a home wrecker, she got x multiple times."

Popular Slang Searches

Slang for gee, thanks.

As you've probably noticed, the slang synonyms for " gee, thanks " are listed above. Note that due to the nature of the algorithm, some results returned by your query may only be concepts, ideas or words that are related to " gee, thanks " (perhaps tenuously). This is simply due to the way the search algorithm works.

You might also have noticed that many of the synonyms or related slang words are racist/sexist/offensive/downright appalling - that's mostly thanks to the lovely community over at Urban Dictionary (not affiliated with Urban Thesaurus). Urban Thesaurus crawls the web and collects millions of different slang terms, many of which come from UD and turn out to be really terrible and insensitive (this is the nature of urban slang, I suppose). Hopefully the related words and synonyms for " gee, thanks " are a little tamer than average.

The Urban Thesaurus was created by indexing millions of different slang terms which are defined on sites like Urban Dictionary . These indexes are then used to find usage correlations between slang terms. The official Urban Dictionary API is used to show the hover-definitions. Note that this thesaurus is not in any way affiliated with Urban Dictionary.

Due to the way the algorithm works, the thesaurus gives you mostly related slang words, rather than exact synonyms. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they're relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for. The search algorithm handles phrases and strings of words quite well, so for example if you want words that are related to lol and rofl you can type in lol rofl and it should give you a pile of related slang terms. Or you might try boyfriend or girlfriend to get words that can mean either one of these (e.g. bae ). Please also note that due to the nature of the internet (and especially UD), there will often be many terrible and offensive terms in the results.

There is still lots of work to be done to get this slang thesaurus to give consistently good results, but I think it's at the stage where it could be useful to people, which is why I released it.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: @krisk , @HubSpot , and @mongodb .
