Yelagin Island
Known as Mustila in Finnish, Yelagin Island, the smallest of the Kirov Islands in the northern part of the Neva delta, was inhabited by a colony of fisherman long before the founding of St. Petersburg. In 1709, it was presented by Peter the Great to Peter Shafirov, a distinguished diplomat and his Vice-Chancellor. Confiscated when Shafirov was sentenced to death for embezzlement in 1723, the island changed hands nine times before the end of the 18 th century. Among its owners during this period was Ivan Perfilevich Yelagin, Oberhofmeister of the Imperial Court, who built the first brick palace on the island. It was his name that stuck in the popular consciousness, and the island has been Yelagin Island ever since.
In 1817, the island was bought by the Office of Emperor Alexander I, who commissioned architect Carlo Rossi to reconstruct the existing palace as a summer home for his mother, Maria Fedorovna. The result is the beautiful Empire-style palace that still stands today, with several restored state rooms open to the public, and several charming follies dotted about the park. The island remained the property of the imperial family until the October Revolution.
In 1934, Yelagin Island was reopened as a Central Park of Culture and Leisure . The layout of the palace grounds was considerably altered, with the addition of numerous sporting facilities, playgrounds, and monumental sculptures. A new central alleyway was cut through the park from the palace to the western tip of the island, and Yelagin became hugely popular with Leningraders for sport and relaxation at weekends.
Nowadays, some effort has been made to restore the park to its original landscaping, and paid entrance keeps the island free of traffic and new construction projects. As well as the attractions of the palace, Yelagin also offers rambling parkland, boating on an attractive series of lakes, and the chance to see the sun set over the Gulf of Finland from the island's western tip.
Opening hours: Park: Summer - Daily, from 6am to 12am, Winter - Daily, from 6am to 11pm. Palace: Daily, from 10am to 6pm.

What happened to Putin’s yacht?
The Scheherazade superyacht was impounded by the Italian government in May 2022 in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead of falling into disrepair, Italy has allowed its owner to maintain and refit the vessel, but it won’t disclose who is footing the bill.
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the vessel has been held at port in Marina di Carrara, located almost 90 miles northwest of Florence, since it was impounded by authorities in the spring of 2022. For over a year, the Italian government has permitted the owner to continue paying for the ship’s staff, its maintenance and refitting of the vessel. But Italy won’t identify the owner.
Italy’s Finance Ministry said in a May 2022 news release that the superyacht had “significant economic and business links” with “prominent elements of the Russian government” but didn’t name the owner of the ship.

While the Amazon founder made waves last year with the debut of his megayacht Koru, Zuckerberg is the name on the yacht world’s lips this season.
By May, the transaction seemed all but confirmed when both the yacht and Zuckerberg made their way to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday with a fete that included a few spins on his infamous hydrofoil.
Now that summer is here, Zuckerberg has debuted Launchpad —and her support superyacht Wingman — on the biggest stage in the yachting world: the Mediterranean.

Which sailing yacht is owned by a Russian billionaire?
Sailing Yacht A is a sailing yacht launched in 2015. The vessel is a sail-assisted motor yacht designed by Philippe Starck (exteriors and interiors) and built by Nobiskrug in Kiel, Germany for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.
Its propulsion consists of a variable-speed hybrid powerplant with two lineshaft controllable-pitch propellers that is sail-assisted by a three-mast fore-and-aft sailing rig. The freestanding carbonfiber rotating masts were manufactured by Magma Structures at Trafalgar Wharf, Portsmouth. Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully automated carbonfiber/taffeta full roach sails. The furling booms were built in Valencia by Future Fibres. The rigging of the yacht was developed partially to be implemented on cargo ships and for commercial use. The vessel features an underwater observation pod in the keel with 30cm (12in)-thick glass. It is the largest private sail-assisted motor yacht in the world.
Sailing Yacht A was delivered by Nobiskrug on 3 February 2017, and left Kiel on 5 February 2017. It exited the Baltic Sea in light mode on near-empty fuel tanks in order to clear the Drogden Strait with minimum draught. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, Spain. Boat International called it “the boundary pushing superyacht”. The yacht is owned by Melnichenko through Valla Yachts Ltd. of Bermuda, and was initially registered there at Hamilton. In December 2021 the yacht was moved to the Isle of Man flag and registered at Douglas.

How did John Staluppi make his money?
Just like the cars he adores and the boats he builds, John Staluppi is a walking, talking embodiment of the ‘American dream’. Starting out as a petrol station mechanic in Brooklyn, Staluppi built a billion dollar business of car dealerships, before turning his hand to creating some of the most iconic superyachts ever built.
We meet at Staluppi’s offices in North Palm Beach, Florida, but – apropos the man – this is no ordinary office building. The shopping mall on US Highway 1 looks innocuous from the outside, but once you’re buzzed in through the front door you enter a dreamscape. The building is home to Staluppi’s classic car collection and museum Cars of Dreams. The cars were arranged in a Brooklyn, circa-1960s, scene, complete with drive-in and merry-go-round. Yes, that’s a merry-go-round. A big one. It’s quiet: the museum is only open three or four times a year for charity events; Shop with a Cop, Hospice Foundation of America and American Heart Association are those that benefit.
Staluppi arrives, dressed casually in a blue open-necked shirt and jeans; burger, fries and shakes are delivered to eat in the museum’s ‘diner scene’ and we settle down to talk.
