An inside look at the world's largest solar-powered boat

Catamarans are fairly odd-looking boats, but earlier this week a special breed was docked at the North Cove Marina in Lower Manhattan. Alongside the typical handful of South Florida-based yachts that pop up here during the summer was an angular, flat-topped catamaran with a glistening blue deck called the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar. There's a reason why this boat stands out: last year it became the first ship to circumnavigate the globe on solar power alone . The 89,000 kg (nearly 100 ton) ship needs a massive solar array to capture enough energy to push itself through the ocean. An impressive 512 square meters (roughly 5,500 square feet) of photovoltaic cells, to be exact, charge the 8.5 tons of lithium-ion batteries that are stored in the ship's two hulls.

The Tûranor PlanetSolar ( tûranor means "power of the sun" in Elvish) is taking a break in New York from its current mission: a science expedition from Miami to Norway led by a University of Geneva-based research team. The climatologists, biologists, and physicists aboard the PlanetSolar are taking measurements of the Gulf Stream to better understand the relationship between the ocean and the atmosphere in an effort to gain new insight about climate change. In particular, they're studying and measuring currents, airborne particles called aerosols that reflect infrared heat and solar radiation, and the myriad natural phenomena that allow the Gulf Stream to function. Since the PlanetSolar is seaworthy and is emission-free, it allows the team to ensure that measurements aren't skewed by exhaust.

During the New York stopover press was invited aboard the PlanetSolar for a view of this boat that functions without any carbon emissions. The vessel might not be the most practical — it's big, it's slow, and it needs to avoid clouds — but it's a bold demonstration of how renewable resources might power ships of the future.

Construction

PlanetSolar was designed by the naval architect from New Zealand, Craig Loomes , and financed by the German entrepreneur, Immo Ströher . She started her build in 2008 in Kiel, Germany in the Knierim Yachtbau shipyard. PlanetSolar took shape and turned into a giant catamaran, the world’s largest ever built .

With a futuristic appearance the giant solar vessel was nevertheless entirely designed and fitted out with the latest technology . In fact, it was very important to Raphaël Domjan to prove that technologies did exist for achieving solar energy exploits and that they already had immense potential. All the materials, components and instruments used in PlanetSolar are therefore available on the market .

On 25 February 2010 more than 200 guests attended the unveiling of PlanetSolar in Kiel. Shortly afterwards, on 31 March, the largest catamaran in the world felt the lap of the water for the first time in Kiel , to the unconcealed emotion of the team which had made this moment possible. After sea trials she was ferried to the Mediterranean , ready to start her circumnavigation adventure.

As a result of collaboration with the Engineering school (Ecole d’ingénieur ) in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, MeteoFrance and the French company Adrena, the PlanetSolar navigation system was enhanced by software simulating the best solar routing.

These days this software is used by many cargo ships and also by yachtsmen, particularly in the Vendée Globe, because it enables the best route to be simulated by incorporating all the vessel characteristics and the weather parameters.

PlanetSolar – The Largest Solar Boat in the World

PlanetSolar is the result of an envisioning by a few like-minded individuals of optimising solar energy into the maritime domain. A solar powered boat, the Planet Solar derives its name – Turanor Planet Solar – from the popular child fiction author JRR Tolkien’s reference to the sun’s brilliant force and energy.

PlanetSolar Details

The idea of a solar ship to operate in the marine waters was first thought of by Swiss engineer Raphael Domjan in the mid-2000s. Raphael’s conceiving of a solar powered boat was centred on the lines of the plots created by famous sci-fi author Jules Verne. But while the dream was quite strong, it started to actualise only in the late 2000s when like-minded collaborators entered into the venture and actually started the development stages for the largest solar boat ever.

Turanor was launched in the year 2010 following a construction process of more than one year. Engineers, scientists and researchers from across the globe have been involved in its creation making it a truly global venture aimed at tackling the major problem plaguing the marine sector. Soon after its launch, the vessel undertook her maiden navigation dream – to circumnavigate the world functioning only on solar energy.

Planet Solar Specifications

• The vessel has been designed on the lines of a yacht. After the completion of her maiden journey, the vessel will be utilised as a yacht aimed at offering opulence and comfort to patrons.
• The vessel has been mounted with solar voltaic cells which have been affixed to solar boards spread to an area over 5,000 square feet on the roof of the Planet Solar.
• The solar energy absorbed by these cells (38,000 cells) is in-turn stored in storing boxes which contain 12 lithium-ionised batteries.
• The vessel measures 31 metres lengthwise, 15 metres breadth wise and slightly six metres height wise. The vessel has a draft of around 1.5 metres.
• The vessel offers a maximum speed of 14 knots. In order to conserve the energy stored in the vessel, its speed however is regulated to an average of about four knots.

A total of 40 people can be easily accommodated in the boat. However for its maiden journey, the boat was equipped with a crew of only six people from various parts of the world. These six people include Raphael Domjan, the lead instigator of the solar boat concept.

As mentioned earlier, Turanor undertook its circumnavigating tour from Monaco about 18 months ago and has successfully completed its navigation. Its itinerary included the Galapagos, South America, Asia, Abu Dhabi and the oceanic waters in and around the Equator.

The largest solar boat is a revolution of its kind. With its inception, the PlanetSolar has realised the dreams of countless decades of using natural energy resources as viable channels of power supply.

in 2012, ‘ planetsolar ‘, the fully solar-powered catamaran designed by new zealander craig loomes , took a trip around the world energized exclusively by rays from the sun. this summer, the ship will continue its itinerary by taking part in a campaign to clean up european waters, a project initiated by the waste free oceans foundation that aims to significantly reduce the floating litter in european waters by 2020. starting in may, the boat became a scientific platform as part of the ‘planetsolar deepwater expedition. the project, led by professor and climatologist martin beniston from the university of geneva will retrieve new data and measurements along the gulf stream. the journey will conclude in reykjavik, repeating a transatlantic crossing in an attempt to break the ‘MS tûranor planetsolar’s’ own 26-day speed record.

#Throwback Thursday: World’s largest solar ship ever

Tûranor PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar ship ever: a 31-metre (100′) catamaran with a beam of 15 metres (50′), covered by 29, 124 solar panels  covering  537 square metres and rated at 93 kW. In each of the hulls there is an electric motor accompanied by lithium-ion batteries weighing 8.5 tons. Marino-geeks can find all of the specs on the Ship Technology website .

Around the world in 160 days

The name Tûranor is derived from The Lord of The Rings and means ‘power of the sun ‘.

At the time, it was the only solar powered vehicle of any kind to cross the Pacific, but it has now been joined by the solar airplane Solar Impulse 2

Over 160 days the Tûranor sailed from Monaco, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, the Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal to join the Mediterranean. In total it covered more than 50,000 km with an average speed of 8 knots .

Now in public service

The Tûranor is operated by Planet Solar SA PlanetSolar, a public limited liability-Swiss company founded in 2008. The company is dedicated to demonstrating that mankind has the resources, expertise, and technologies required to completely eliminate the use of fossil fuels.

From the PlanetSolar website : The solar ship now belongs to the Race for Water Foundation , who uses it for scientific missions and demonstrations with the objective of fighting against plastic ocean pollution. PlanetSolar remains in charge of the solar ship’s energy management and is fully devoted to its client and partners.

Race for Water, another major actor in terms of protecting the planet’s future, has taken over the reins, benefiting from the visibility of this trip around the world. It has demonstrated its ability to raise the awareness of opinion leaders, politicians, institutional bodies, and the general public in the 4 corners of the world

The future of solar powered boats

The boat was built with the idea that it would be a luxury yacht. It can carry 160 passengers and requires only a crew of 4 to operate (other than services staff!) The boat’s Captain,Gerard D’Aboville said in 2010: “Personally I don’t believe solar energy is appropriate for big ships and commercial traffic. It would be a dream, but it’s crazy. You would not get enough power.”

RO-RO FERRY END ELEVATION - In these drawings we see a 50 meter RoRo ferry that is designed to service tourism and deliver supplies between the Caribbean Islands. The rotary sails provide a significant area, but may be increased to improve performance. The turbines can be raised and lowered to cope with different running conditions and furled for docking in ports or during storm conditions. The main hull is not the ideal, but a compromise shallow draft design - to accommodate two Ford Transit vans side by side (12 in total). The passenger areas are below decks. The outriggers provide stability against roll induced by the wind turbines. TRANSIT EXAMPLES - The above table illustrates one of the most likely ocean awareness expedition routes that could be undertaken by the Elizabeth Swan , showing the time elapsed in days for 7 knots average cruising speed, including times for 5 and 6 knot averages - allowing for 10% downtime and 36 days in ports. Hence, although the objective is to reduce the current solar circumnavigation record from 584 days, the event in not an outright non-stop yacht competition in the offshore racing sense. It remains to be seen how accurate such a prediction might be.

The world’s largest solar boat, MS TURANOR PlanetSolar sailing under the Swiss flag, is expected next week in the capital of the Philippines. For PlanetSolar it will be the first stop in Asia. With this stop the expedition, which attempts to complete the first world tour using only solar energy, will reach its fifth continent.

The stop in Manila was inspired by the official partner SunPower. The Californian company is the producer of the solar cells that are used on PlanetSolar. These cells are produced in one of their largest factories located close to Manila. Appropriately, a majority of the 4,500 SunPower employees in Manila will welcome “their” solar cells.

Since the departure from Cairns, Australia, PlanetSolar  has crossed the equator for the second time and mastered the change from the winter in the Southern hemisphere to the summer in the Northern hemisphere. This was accomplished despite some strong winds, waves and uncertain weather.  They also had to be careful with rebel situations in the South of the Philippines. Due to several warnings from the authorities, the PlanetSolar crew had to take some detours and also had to hide their position on the daily blog and the virtual world map on the website. The crew used distraction messages in order to lead potential invaders astray.

The founder and co-skipper of PlanetSolar, Raphaël Domjan said, “We are very pleased that the PlanetSolar crew passed the first pirate test successfully, with this they demonstrated that their journey is safe, not only technically but also tactically. We have successfully covered more than 35,000 km, and we are looking forward to also reach the Asian countries with our important message. Today we can proudly say that we have a project which mastered the longest distance ever with only the help of the sun, and that alone is worth a lot.”

The PlanetSolar project was founded by the Swiss Raphaël Domjan. The project team is located in Yverdon, canton of Vaud, in western Switzerland. The world’s largest solar boat was given the name “TURANOR” which means “Power of the Sun,” inspired by the film saga “The Lord of the Rings.” The MS TÛRANOR PlanetSolar began her journey on the 27 th of September 2010 in Monaco . She wants to prove with her world tour that alternative energy systems are already effective and reliable today. The boat is made up of more than 540 square meters of solar cells from SunPower. For the first circumnavigation of the world they are using a “sun route software and forecast system” for the first time. This system gives the crew information on the expected weather, wave height,  clouds, and sun intensity. Several companies and institutions worked on both the boat development and its respective systems, mostly from Switzerland , Germany , and France . The biggest partners of the expedition are; the watch producer Candino, the energy management company Immosolar, the solar cell producer SunPower, and the Swiss Confederation, who is especially responsible for the organization of activites at the stopovers, for example, Hong Kong, Singapore , Dubai and Abu Dhabi .

The record-breaking solar-powered 31 metre superyacht MS Tûranor PlanetSolar has returned to Monaco for the inaugural Solar1 Monte-Carlo Cup.

Taking place 10 to 12 July, 2014, the Solar 1 Monte-Carlo Cup race will see competition from set classes of solar-powered yachts in the waters off Monaco. MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is a symbol of the benefits of photovoltaic energy and what solar-powered vessels can achieve, and as such she will join the first-ever Solar1 Monte-Carlo Cup race, serving as a platform for the event and a host yacht welcoming the race's jury panel.

MS Tûranor PlanetSolar made it into the Guinness Book of World Records during her 2010 to 2012 round-the-world journey after crossing the Atlantic in 26 days. She then smashed her own record in own speed record for a solar-powered transatlantic crossing in May 2013, crossing the Atlantic in 22 days, 12 hours and 32 minutes, completing 2,867 miles at an average speed of 5.3 knots.

After the Solar1 Monte-Carlo Cup wraps up mid-July, MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will continue her journey across the Mediterranean, heading to Greece, where the yacht is due to embark on its next mission, serving as a base for research with the University of Geneva’s TerraSubmersa scientific expeditions.
