How to Spot a Fake Rolex watches

– Rolex Real vs Fake – The Ultimate Guide Spotting Them

Rolex real vs fake - the ultimate guide spotting them.

  • Christine Ye
  • March 13, 2024

Understanding the key differences between a real and fake Rolex is important before spending your hard-earned money on a luxury watch. While some counterfeits are easy to spot, others can be well-designed with the intent to deceive buyers. Rolex is, after all, one of the most counterfeited brands in the world.

Knowing the signs of how to spot a fake Rolex can be particularly helpful when shopping for pre-owned watches. This comprehensive guide outlines several key indicators that distinguish a real Rolex from a fake one. Additionally, comparison photos of a genuine Rolex Submariner 116610LN and a replica are included to provide visual examples of the differences between the quality of the two watches.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex - Reference number engravings compared

Rolex Fake vs Real –  Reference Number

How to Research the Rolex Reference Number

If you want to learn how to distinguish a fake Rolex from an authentic one, a good place to start is researching the reference number . The reference number of a Rolex watch, also known as the model number, contains essential information such as the age of the watch, model, material, and bezel type. This information helps you compare the specific watch with its reference number to ensure that everything matches the description.

Rolex reference numbers can be four, five, or six digits, and sometimes include letters. The length of the reference number indicates the general age of the watch. Four-digit reference numbers indicate vintage Rolex watches, while five and six-digit reference numbers indicate discontinued and modern Rolex watches, respectively. In both five and six-digit reference numbers, the last digit indicates the material of the watch. Below is a chart that explains what material the watch is made of according to the last digit of the 5 and 6-digit model numbers:

  • 0 = stainless steel
  • 1 = two-tone stainless steel & rose gold
  • 2 = two-tone stainless steel & platinum
  • 3 = two-tone stainless steel & yellow gold
  • 4 = two-tone stainless steel & white gold
  • 5 = rose gold
  • 6 = platinum
  • 7 = 14k yellow gold
  • 8 = 18k yellow gold
  • 9 = 18k white gold

For instance, a Rolex Submariner reference 116610 denotes a stainless-steel model, while a Rolex Submariner reference 116619 represents a white gold model. Additionally, the second-to-last digit of the reference number indicates the bezel type, although this number is more complex. Certain numbers denote different bezel types for different Rolex watch collections. For example, for a Rolex Sea-Dweller, a 0 as the second-to-last digit means it has a rotating bezel, while for a Rolex Pearlmaster, it signifies a gemstone-set bezel. So, we recommend doing a Google search for your specific model.

Some Rolex reference numbers have alphanumeric codes that include letters at the end. These letters are codes that denote bezel insert colors, primarily for Rolex sports watches. These codes are translations of French descriptors, which determine the letters used as codes for each color. The most common color codes include:

  • LN (Lunette Noir) = Black bezel
  • LB (Lunette Bleu) = Blue bezel
  • LV (Lunette Verte) = Green bezel
  • BLNR (Bleu/Noir) = Blue and Black bezel
  • BLRO (Bleu/Rouge) = Blue and Red bezel
  • CHNR (Chocolat/Noir) = Brown and Black bezel

How to Spot a Fake Rolex with Weight & Materials

To differentiate between a genuine Rolex and a fake one, a helpful tip is to check the weight of the watch. Generally, an authentic Rolex is heavier than a counterfeit one, as it is made of high-quality materials like 904L stainless steel, 18k gold, 950 platinum, or RLX titanium. In contrast, fake Rolexes tend to be made with cheaper materials, making them lightweight and weaker.

Additionally, knowing which material a specific Rolex model is made of can also help spot a fake. For instance, certain models like the Milgauss , Explorer II , and Deepsea have only been produced in stainless steel, and any made with other materials are replicas. Similarly, watches from Rolex’s Day-Date collection are exclusively made with precious metals, specifically gold or platinum, and any made with other materials are likely to be fake.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Dial

The dial is the centerpiece of any watch and is usually the first thing people notice. On a Rolex watch, the dial is crafted to the highest standards with every detail meticulously placed and in perfect alignment. Watch experts and those familiar with the brand can easily spot any discrepancies, but for those who are less knowledgeable, there are some telltale signs of questionable authenticity to look for on the dial of counterfeit Rolex watches.

The famous Rolex coronet logo is a regal five-point crown that can always be found on the dial of genuine Rolex watches. The crown is typically located at the 12 o’clock position on most classic watches, except for the Day-Date model, where it is located beneath the day window at the 12 o’clock position. For most of Rolex’s professional watches, including the Submariner, Sea-Dweller, GMT-Master, Yacht-Master , Explorer , and Air-King , the crown logo is positioned below the large triangular dial marker at 12 o’clock, except for the Yacht-Master II, where the crown is placed under the countdown indicator on the dial. Therefore, if the watch in question has the crown logo in any other location or is missing the crown logo, it is likely not a genuine Rolex.

Another red flag is any spelling mistakes, crooked or misplaced text, different font style or size, misaligned hour and minute markers, or awkward spacing of features. Rolex watches are exquisitely designed and crafted, with remarkable attention paid to every detail, no matter how small. Therefore, anything that appears to be aesthetically off, even slightly, warrants closer inspection. In the photos below, you can see visible discrepancies on the dials of a real Rolex (left) and a fake Rolex (right).

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the dial

Side by side comparison of fake and real Rolex Submariner 116610LN dial

  • The most apparent difference between the hour markers on the two watches is the material used, which is the first noticeable inconsistency. The hour markers on the counterfeit Rolex appear to be of lower quality than those on the authentic Rolex, and they appear to be sticker-like in appearance.
  • The hour markers on the authentic Rolex have even and symmetrical silver borders surrounding their shapes. On the other hand, the hour markers on the Rolex replica have uneven borders around the shapes of almost every marker. This is especially noticeable on the 4 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 11 o’clock markers.
  • There is a visible difference in the silver border on the hands of both watches. The border on the replica is notably thinner than the border around the authentic Rolex’s hands, especially on the hour hands of both watches.
  • One crucial authenticity indicator that is hard to capture in photos is the watch’s movement, as indicated by the seconds hand. Genuine Rolex watches feature a seamless, sweeping motion of the seconds hand, whereas on this fake (and many others), the seconds hand moves in a jerky, ticking-like motion as it travels across the dial.
  • Rolex incorporates luminescent material, also known as lume, on the dials of some of its watches such as the Submariner to enhance readability and illuminate details in dimly lit conditions, such as during deep diving. This is a distinctive characteristic of Rolex watches, as you can observe it on each hour marker, as well as on the hour, minute, and seconds hands of an authentic Rolex, but it is not present on the replica.
  • The absence of lume application can also be detected by the watch’s lack of glow in the dark, which is evident in this counterfeit Rolex as it does not exhibit any luminescent properties.
  • The wording font on the replica is different than on the real Rolex in the following ways:
  • The lettering on the words “ROLEX” and “ OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE” are less bolded and are noticeably different. For example, the R in “ROLEX” are visibly different between both watches, especially in the upper left corner of the R.
  • “SUBMARINER”, “1000 ft 300 m ”, “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER”, and “OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” are all written in a noticeably different font on the replica as well.
  • Both the font and the placement of “SWISS MADE” at the very bottom of the dial are also visual discrepancies between both watches. On the real Rolex, the words are underneath the 6 o’clock hour marker, whereas on the replica they are separated by the hour marker and written in a different style font.
  • The cyclops glass feature at 3 o’clock is supposed to magnify the date number by 2.5x legibility.
  • The cyclops glass always protrudes above the crystal, like a bubble—it is never flat and never fitted under the crystal.
  • A way to identify a fake Rolex is by observing its date feature. Rolex watches have an instantaneous date display, meaning the date changes precisely at midnight, not gradually. If a Rolex replica shows an in-between date (mid roll) on the dial, it is a telltale sign of a fake since the real Rolex would change the date immediately. This characteristic might not be noticeable unless you have the watch for more than a day, but ideally, you should have already identified the counterfeit before then.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Close up on the dial

How to Spot a Fake Rolex with Laser-Etched Coronet (LEC) on Glass

  • On modern Rolex watches produced after 2001, there is a tiny laser-etched coronet/crown (LEC) on the glass at the 6 o’clock position. This is an additional measure taken by Rolex to stay ahead of counterfeiters and establish another authenticity indicator on their timepieces. The LEC feature is incredibly difficult to replicate because the crown is not simply engraved or etched onto the glass but is instead embedded within it. It is worth noting that while this feature has been incorporated into the entire collection of Rolex watches manufactured from 2001 onwards, the timing of its implementation varies from model to model. Therefore, if searching for this characteristic on a specific Rolex watch, it is advisable to investigate when the LEC feature was added to that particular model.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the Laser-etched coronet (LEC) on glass

Rolex Fake vs Real – Laser-Etched Coronet (LEC) on Glass

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Bezel

Rolex watches have various styles, colors, and materials for their bezels. Knowing the basics about Rolex bezels, especially for the watch under scrutiny, can be helpful when checking for authenticity. For instance, fluted bezels on authentic Rolex watches are made of 18k gold. Hence, if you come across a watch with a fluted bezel made of platinum or stainless steel, it is undoubtedly a fake Rolex.

The GMT-Master and GMT-Master II collections have a unique two-tone bezel in different color combinations. Any Rolex watch with a two-tone bezel will have a distinct line dividing the face of the watch horizontally through the numbers 6 and 18 on the bezel markers. If the two colors appear to bleed into each other or the colors split anywhere else on the bezel besides the numbers 6 and 18, then that watch is a fake Rolex.

Additionally, modern Rolex watches made in 2001 and later have a tiny laser-etched coronet/crown (LEC) on the glass at 6 o’clock. This feature is hard to replicate, and its implementation varies across different Rolex models. Therefore, researching when the LEC feature was applied to a specific Rolex model is advisable.

Check out the side-by-side images below to see other significant differences between the real Rolex Submariner and a counterfeit version.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the bezel

Rolex Fake vs Real – Bezel

  • There is a significant difference in the width of the bezels between the two watches. The bezel on the fake Rolex is visibly narrower compared to the bezel on the authentic Rolex.
  • When comparing the bezels of the real Rolex and the counterfeit watch, the font on the numbers is noticeably distinct. Specifically, the numbers on the replica bezel appear bolder and thicker compared to the font on the genuine Rolex bezel. One can easily spot this difference by comparing the numbers 2, 4, and 5 on both bezels.
  • The lume pip located at the 12 o’clock position on the authentic Rolex bezel is distinguished by a silver lining around it and fits seamlessly within the confines of the triangle marker surrounding it. Conversely, the lume pip on the counterfeit Rolex’s bezel has a larger, thicker border that extends outside the triangle marker’s boundary. Additionally, it lacks lume material, rendering it unable to glow in the dark like the authentic Rolex bezel’s pip.
  • On the genuine Rolex, the numbers and markers on the bezel are deeply engraved and have a distinct groove on the surface, whereas the bezel on the counterfeit watch is completely smooth with no groove.
  • A real Rolex watch features engravings on the inner ring of its bezel, also known as the “rehaut”. The word “ROLEX” is engraved five times on both the right and left sides, with a tiny Rolex crown logo at the 12 o’clock position, and the watch’s serial number at 6 o’clock. Older Rolex watches may have these details laser-etched instead of engraved, but Rolex started using engravings in 2005 to make them harder to replicate. If the rehaut of a bezel has no engravings or something else engraved on it, it is likely a fake. In the case of this replica, the rehaut has no engravings or etchings and is simply a reflective, mirror-like surface.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Bezel with Lugs, Crown Guards, and Winding Crown

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Case

When searching for indications of a counterfeit Rolex, there are various features on the watch case that reveal its authenticity or lack thereof. As previously mentioned, authentic Rolex timepieces are made of the finest quality materials, which is typically the most apparent indication of whether a Rolex watch is genuine or fake. Replicas are usually crafted from inferior and cheaper materials, which frequently manifests in the overall appearance and texture of the watch. Additionally, specifics about the design and form of specific features on a Rolex watch case can serve as signs of its legitimacy, which are illustrated in the comparison photos below.

  • The lugs on the genuine Rolex appear thicker and more substantial compared to the skinnier, slender, and tapered lugs on the replica.
  • The real Rolex has lugs with a brushed metal surface, whereas the lugs on the replica have a polished metal surface. This contrast is noticeable in both the shine and the texture of the surfaces.
  • The authentic Rolex has its serial number engraved between the lugs when the metal bracelet is removed, which is not the case with the counterfeit watch.
  • The disparity in the shape of the crown guards is another conspicuous dissimilarity between the two timepieces. The crown guards on the counterfeit watch have a more pointed appearance compared to the genuine Rolex. This difference is evident when viewing the watches side by side or from a profile angle.
  • The designs on the winding crowns also differ noticeably. On the authentic Rolex, the markings of three small dots under the crown and the Rolex crown itself protrude outwards, whereas on the counterfeit, the markings are much flatter.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Watches with Case - Differences Between Fake and Real Rolex

Rolex Fake vs Real – Winding Crown

To clarify, it should be noted that certain older steel and yellow gold Rolex watches with the Twinlock waterproof feature, which provides up to 100 meters (300 feet) of water resistance, do have a small line under the crown. However, the Submariner 116610 model being discussed here is equipped with a Triplock winding crown, which ensures water resistance up to 300 meters (1,000 feet). Triplock winding crowns always have three dots below the coronet symbol, regardless of the watch’s material. Therefore, the incorrect marking on the winding crown of this replica watch clearly indicates that it is not authentic. To help identify other fake Rolex watches, the visual guide below shows the markings on winding crowns for different Rolex models made from different materials and with either the Twinlock or Triplock features:

  • The caseback of a watch may often be overlooked, but it can provide clear indicators of its authenticity. Unlike other brands, Rolex does not equip its timepieces with transparent casebacks. Genuine Rolex watches come with full metal casebacks that are fluted and screwed into the case, providing optimal water resistance. Therefore, if a Rolex watch has a transparent caseback, it is undoubtedly a fake. Of course there are a few exceptions, including the Cellini Prince and the new 2023 anniversary model platinum Daytona.
  • In general, Rolex watches do not have any logos, text, etchings, or engravings on their casebacks. Therefore, if the watch in question has any such markings on its caseback, it is likely a counterfeit. However, there are a few exceptions, such as if the watch was part of a professional team that participated in a Rolex event and won.
  • There is a noticeable difference in the quality of finish on the casebacks of both watches. The genuine Rolex has a much better finish with consistent color of the steel and a smooth brushed surface throughout. On the other hand, the counterfeit Rolex has an inconsistent color with mixed colored metal visible on the caseback. This is further emphasized by the deeper grooves of the brush strokes on the surface.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the Caseback

Rolex Fake vs Real – Caseback

It should be noted that there are some exceptions to the general rule outlined above. For instance, certain Rolex watches such as the Milgauss , Deepsea, vintage Sea Dweller , some gold Lady Datejusts , and military Submariners do have specific patented markings on their caseback. However, in the case of the counterfeit watch being discussed, which is a replica of a non-military Rolex Submariner, there should not be any engravings or markings on the caseback. Particularly not markings that reference a different Rolex watch collection, as is the case with this “Submariner” caseback that references the “ Daytona .” Such blatant inconsistencies are among the most reliable ways to spot a fake Rolex. Additionally, when purchasing secondhand watches, it is possible that the previous owner may have had personal engravings made on the watch. In such cases, it is best to have the watch authenticated by a reputable source to ensure that it is not a counterfeit.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the bracelet

Rolex Fake vs Real –  Bracelet

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Bracelet

A watch’s bracelet can also have a lot of telltale signs of its authenticity, some that are easier to spot than others. The four styles of bracelets by Rolex are Oyster, Jubilee, President, and Pearlmaster, in addition to different strap options, as seen below:

  • Upon comparing these two watches, it is apparent that there are a couple of visible differences in the bracelet links of each. In the authentic Rolex, the links are made of brushed metal all around the bracelet, whereas in the fake Rolex, only the outer links are brushed metal and the center links are polished, giving them a shinier appearance.
  • The difference in the size and width of the bracelet links is another visible distinction between the two watches. The links on the authentic Rolex are thicker and have a more robust appearance, whereas the links on the replica are noticeably thinner and more slender. As a result, the bracelet of the counterfeit watch is narrower compared to the genuine Rolex bracelet.
  • A visible difference between the two bracelets is the length of the clasp. When compared side by side, the clasp on the genuine Rolex bracelet is significantly longer than the clasp on the counterfeit Rolex.
  • The position of the Rolex crown on the clasp of each watch is distinct. On the authentic Rolex, the crown is located such that the lowermost part of the crown acts as part of the concealed flip-lock clasp mechanism, serving as a ledge to facilitate opening. On the replica, the entire crown is embedded within the center link, and there is no part of it overhanging the edge as there is on the genuine Rolex. Moreover, the “hidden” flip-lock clasp on the replica is not very concealed and is evidently a separate piece that protrudes further than the rest of the clasp.
  • The counterfeit Rolex features two buttons, one on each side of the clasp, which serve as a push-release mechanism. In contrast, the authentic Rolex has no buttons since they are unnecessary to open the clasp, which is instead released using the hidden flip-lock clasp.
  • When you open the clasps of both watches, it is evident that the real Rolex’s clasp has an emblem engraving that consists of the word “ROLEX” in the center and the Rolex crown above it. To the right of the emblem, you can find the words “GENEVA” and “SWISS MADE” engraved in small font. On the other hand, the inside clasp of the replica doesn’t have any engravings.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex by the Back Side of the Clasp

Rolex Fake vs Real – Backside of the Clasp

  • It is worth noting that the situation is reversed when it comes to engravings on the back side of the clasps of both watches. Surprisingly, the replica’s clasp can be engraved with the words “STAINLESS STEEL,” while the authentic Rolex’s clasp has no engravings at all. Detecting the fake solely based on this aspect may be a bit more difficult, but the difference between the two can still be discerned.

Buy Rolex watches from trusted BBB certified companies

Trust Your Source

There are numerous tips and indicators for spotting a fake Rolex watch. As the most counterfeited luxury watch brand, the quality of these fake watches has improved to a level previously unseen in the luxury world. This means that counterfeiters have become highly skilled at replicating Rolex timepieces, with some counterfeit watches being almost impossible to detect without the help of highly trained experts. While there are still many obvious tells that can give away a fake Rolex, the increasing amount of sophisticated counterfeits on the market is concerning. It’s important to take the time to carefully inspect any watch in question and have it authenticated by a reputable source, such as a brand authorized dealer, qualified watchmaker, high-end watch shop, or brand service provider.

It’s also crucial to purchase from a genuine, trustworthy, and reputable seller. This is especially important when buying a pre-owned Rolex, as there is more risk involved compared to buying brand new from a retail store. When shopping on online marketplaces, it’s essential to do thorough research on the seller. Look for vetted sources with a solid reputation, and check whether they guarantee the authenticity of their products, offer a warranty with every sale, have a reasonable return policy, and any other information that will increase your trust in the seller. Ultimately, taking these precautions will ensure confidence in your decision to buy an extravagant and expensive watch like a Rolex.

Guide To Spot A Fake Rolex Watch

Spot A Fake Rolex Watch

Ask someone to name the top luxury watch brand, and Rolex will undoubtedly be the clear winner. The very idea of owning an authentic Rolex watch is so alluring that buyers, collectors and enthusiasts alike are often willing to go to any extent to acquire one. After all, who doesn’t want to buy a Rolex ?

However, this insane popularity has given rise to a parallel market of highly convincing counterfeit replicas that fool even the most experienced collectors.

Rolex is copied in so many ways, and it’s really not easy to differentiate a real from a fake unless you have a trained eye. So, it’s crucial you are armed with the right knowledge to identify a fake Rolex. Below, we’ll directly compare a real and fake Rolex based on various factors to help you differentiate easily.

Top Signs To Spot A Fake Rolex

1. weight of the watch.

✔️ Real – Hold a real Rolex, and you’ll feel the weight. The weight is due to the use of the finest materials and precise craftsmanship of the components that go into its creation. The metals used in making the Rolex watches have a certain weight, making the watches feel solid and substantial on your wrist.

Rolex Weight of the watch

❌ Fake – If your Rolex feels ‘lightweight’, you know it’s not real. The low weight directly represents the compromising approach to quality, where the counterfeiter has used low-quality materials and cheap engineering to imitate a Rolex.

2. Quality & Finishing

✔️ Real – Rolex stands out as a beacon of luxury and unmatched quality. Any diversion from that and you know the watch you’re holding is a fake. Each Rolex is made precisely to guarantee its look and function. If you have ever wondered how Rolex makes watches, remember that it uses a combination of finishes on each timepiece, which scammers cannot achieve.

Rolex Quality & Finishing

❌ Fake – The devil is in the details. If you see the quality of the watch is inappropriate like the dial has incorrect font or spellings, the lume is imperfect, or there are markings on the case and the bracelet, understand it is a replica. Fraudsters find it nearly impossible to replicate the kind of finesse each Rolex watch entails.

3. Serial & Model numbers

✔️ Real – Every Rolex has the serial number engraved between the lugs at the 6 o’clock position of the dial. The lettering of the serial number is perfect and precise, reminiscent of meticulous craftsmanship. On the other hand, the model number is found above the lugs at 12 o’clock along with the text ‘ORIG ROLEX DESIGN’. A genuine Rolex's serial and model numbers are cut deep and glow in the light when raised at an angle.

Rolex Serial & Model numbers

❌ Fake – Imitations have dotted or blurred serial numbers due to inferior etching techniques. This usually leaves behind an acid-etched or sandy texture, and the lines are a little messy. In addition, the counterfeit models often repeat identical serial and reference numbers, a shortcut that Rolex never takes. Each Rolex boasts unique set of identifiers, with reference numbers that tell its heritage and design story.

4. Dial Design

✔️ Real – The dial of a genuine, brand-new Rolex showcases impeccable precision in every aspect - the fonts, spaces between letters, spellings, etc. There is an absolute absence of errors. The dial, hour markers and hands of a real Rolex are immaculate. The alignment of the markers, printing on the dial, and lustre on the dial all result from Rolex’s elaborate design process to achieve visual and functional harmony.

Rolex Dial Design

❌ Fake – If you spot any discrepancy in the dial, such as a blemished finish, uneven lettering, misspellings or smudges, it should immediately trigger your doubt about the watch’s originality. Closely examine the dial detailing to spot any variation in the design of the hands or the dial as a whole.

5. Cyclops Lens

✔️ Real – Many Rolex watches have a date on the dial, magnified with a Cyclops lens. This signature magnifying lens adorns the crystal over the date window. An authentic Rolex has the Cyclops lens bulging outward in a convex shape above the date display, enhancing the date with 2.5 times magnification.

Rolex Cyclops Lens

❌ Fake – The Cyclops lens on a fake Rolex lies flat and hence, is unable to offer the characteristic magnification correctly. Try to run your fingers over the lens – you should feel a small bump over the date. If not, you know what it is. Most counterfeit Rolex watches provide a magnification of 1.5 times or lower, making the date appear smaller and difficult to see.

6. Movement

✔️ Real – Rolex watches are mechanical and self-winding. So, encountering a Rolex with a quartz movement should spark concerns. Rolex produced only a handful of quartz watches throughout its history, such as the Rolex Oysterquartz, between the 1970s and the 2000s. So, it’s pretty unlikely to find a Rolex with quartz and not mechanical movement. Another thing to look for is the finishing of the movement, which is only visible upon opening the case. The gears and springs inside a real Rolex are assembled with an unwavering commitment to precision and showcase flawless execution.

Rolex Movement

❌ Fake – Cloned Rolex watches miss the mark when it comes to the finishing touches. The advent of superior counterfeiting technologies like 3D printing and optimal scanning has empowered fraudsters to produce convincing replicas with movements that resemble a genuine Rolex, but they fall short of exquisite finishing. In most cases, they also fail to replicate the Rolex engraving, which comes as a seal of authenticity.

7. Second Hand

✔️ Real – The second hand of a genuine Rolex moves in tiny ticks, which appear as a smooth, seamless glide around the face of the watch without pause.

Rolex Second Hand

❌ Fake – On the other hand, a fake Rolex makes a stuttering sound. Put the watch close to your ear and listen closely. A stuttering second-hand makes a small ticking noise instead of remaining silent. The only exception is the Rolex Oysterquartz, which uses a quartz movement rather than a mechanical one, resulting in a ticking sound.

8. Water Resistance

✔️ Real – All Rolex watches boast a construction, certified through rigorous water pressure testing, ensuring they are waterproof. Today, the hermetic construction of the Oyster case, the solid middle case of the watch, and the screw-down winding crowns ensure the watches are waterproof.

Rolex Water Resistance

❌ Fake – Imitation Rolex models lack sophisticated seals and robust casings and are not resilient against water. The only way to find out is by subjecting the watch to a water pressure test. However, you must take caution before doing it because – First, if the watch is fake, a water pressure test will ruin it, and you won’t be able to return it. Second, vintage watches, even if authentic, may still fail these tests. It is best to trust professionals to ensure the authenticity of your Rolex in such cases.

9. Case Back

✔️ Real – One of the most significant hallmarks of a genuine Rolex is its solid case back. Except for a few pieces of Rolex from history, such as the distinct 60th-anniversary platinum Daytona or the vintage collections from the 1930s that display their inner workings through the back, almost all Rolex watches have a solid case back.

Rolex Case Back

❌ Fake – Replica watchmakers often make the case back of a fake Rolex transparent to entice buyers with the mechanical spectacle inside. This is a clear sign of counterfeiting. A Rolex watch with a clear case back that exposes the movement inside strongly indicates that it may not be a true Rolex.

10. Case Back Markings

✔️ Real – Rolex’s commitment to minimalism extends to the back of the watches. The majority of Rolex watches defer from any form of case back engravings, illustrations, or logos, leaving a few exceptions behind, like the Rolex Sea Dwellers, Milgauss, and Vintage Lady Datejust models 69174, 69173, and 6917, all engraved with ‘Stainless Steel’ and ‘Registered Design’ on the case back.

Rolex Case Back Markings

❌ Fake – If you admire a Rolex’s case back and find a nice engraving or logo on it, you’re likely looking at a duplicate. Rolex prides itself on its solid case backs, a tradition that speaks to its minimalist ethics and underscores its luxury craftsmanship.

11. Laser Etched Crystal

✔️ Real – In 2002, Rolex introduced a subtle yet distinctive authentication feature by adding a crystal over the dial with a small crown logo positioned at the 6 o'clock mark. This micro-etching is a badge of authenticity for models crafted that year and following. It is a detail worth searching for in a genuine Rolex.

Rolex Laser Etched Crystal

❌ Fake – Fraudsters often overlook this tiny etching on the crystal, and the precision is so high that it is almost difficult to replicate. Moreover, the level of intricacy involved in creating and placing the micro-logo on the crystal is impossible for counterfeiters to mimic.

12. Markings on the Crown

✔️ Real – The crown has clear markings and a fluted design on a real Rolex. The pre-1960 Rolex watches feature a cross on the Rolex crown logo. The crown logo still exists in the recent models, but dots and bars are added. These dots and bars symbolise the watch as a Triplock or Twinlock and highlight the material. A yellow gold or steel Twinlock crown has a bar, while a platinum Rolex model has a single dot. A white gold Triplock crown features a larger dot between two smaller ones than the platinum model, which features a small dot between two larger ones.

Rolex Markings on the Crown

❌ Fake – A smooth, brushed, or plain crown indicates that the watch could be fake. While not having those bars and dots is not a single sign of a fake piece, if you’re looking at a recent Rolex model, that extra design or marking on the crown should be there.

13. Bracelet

✔️ Real – Rolex produces different types and styles of bracelet designs paired with each watch collection. Briefly research the Rolex model and its signature characteristics to avoid confusion. For instance, a Rolex Submariner will always come fitted with an Oyster bracelet. Watch dealers sometimes pair genuine Rolex watches with aftermarket bracelets as the bracelets get stretched from wear and tear. In such cases, a reputable seller must always disclose any modification to the original design before sale.

Rolex Bracelet

❌ Fake – If the bracelet style is mismatched with the particular Rolex model or the style you bought, chances are it is a counterfeit. A few other things to notice include the clasp and the bracelet links. A fake Rolex clasp is shorter than a real one, and the crown is placed differently. On a fake Rolex, the crown is fitted with the centre link. A duplicate Rolex model’s links don’t move smoothly and are not tightly joined.

14. Box & Papers

✔️ Real – Rolex maintains a high standard not just in watchmaking but also in the way the watches are presented. The packaging of a genuine Rolex reflects the brand’s impeccable standards, displaying its commitment to quality and attention to details like stitching, perfect box corners and accurate embossing. The watches are meticulously arranged inside the box, typically with protective coverings and supports to keep them securely in place. Moreover, authentic Rolex timepieces include thorough documentation, including the manual, authenticity certificate, warranty card, etc. The documents are printed with accurate information and appear sharp.

Rolex Box & Papers

❌ Fake – The counterfeiters pay little or no attention to the detailing, which can be easily identified by how the watch is presented within the box. They are often misplaced and lack a protective covering. A fake Rolex watch comes with documentation that has printing errors, spelling mistakes, missing elements, and looks rushed. Pay close attention to the box and papers when buying a vintage Rolex, as they help establish whether the watch is authentic or not.

Choose A Trustworthy Rolex Dealer

You don’t merely own a Rolex; it is an investment. So, naturally, the joy of owning a genuine Rolex is unmatched. However, navigating the nuances of the watch industry requires more than knowledge. It requires expertise and a keen eye. Counterfeiters are only getting better with time, and fake Rolex appears quite convincing these days.

So, the only way to avoid falling prey to this ‘super fake’ Rolex market is to buy Rolex watches from a qualified and authorised watch dealer.

Some qualities to look for in a reputable Rolex watch dealer are:

  • A solid online presence as well as real testimonials from previous buyers.
  • Provide a Certificate of Authenticity and warranty on the watch, serving as an assurance that the reviewed Rolex is authentic and has been checked thoroughly before putting it up on sale.
  • Reviews on trusted platforms like Trustpilot and Google Reviews
  • The dealer must provide an easy return policy and transparent payment getaway.
  • A well-established physical store is preferable.
  • The customer support team should be readily available to answer queries.

How To Spot a Fake Rolex: A Comprehensive Guide With Pictures

  • March 8, 2024

Fake Rolex

Table of Contents

The massive demand for Rolex timepieces has given rise to counterfeiters, who seek to trick unsuspecting buyers by producing and selling fake Rolex watches.

The most commonly counterfeited Rolex models typically include some of the brand’s most iconic and sought-after watches. These often encompass Daytona, Datejust, GMT Master-II, and Submariner watches.

In this guide, we will be covering the key aspects to look for when examining a Rolex watch. We will also reveal tips and tricks to help you avoid counterfeit products effectively.

General Tips Before Buying a Rolex

Here are some general tips to keep in mind before making a purchase.

  • A 2-year-old Rolex with no warranty card is a red flag.
  • It’s common for vintage Rolexes to miss their box and papers.
  • Buy from a reliable source, an authorized Rolex dealer or a reputable grey market dealer.
  • Modern luxury watches should always be accompanied by warranty documentation, a sign of authenticity.
  • Authentic Rolex watches can be expensive, so if a deal seems too good to be true, it warrants further investigation.
  • Genuine Rolex watches are known for their attention to detail. Look for any imperfections or inconsistencies.
  • Rolex watches have unique markings and engravings that can help authenticate them. Familiarize yourself with these details to ensure the watch’s authenticity.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex

Here are concise ways to identify a genuine Rolex, helping you avoid counterfeits and ensure a sound investment:

  • Movement: A ticking motion suggests the watch is fake, as genuine Rolexes have a smooth, sweeping second-hand movement.
  • Cyclops: Incorrect magnification or if the date doesn’t fully occupy the window indicates it may not be genuine.
  • Caseback Markings & Stickers: Transparent casebacks are clear indicators of a counterfeit Rolex.
  • Etching & Serial Numbers: Authentic Rolexes have fine etchings of the crown logo and serial numbers, challenging for forgers to accurately replicate.
  • Markings, Dial, Hands, and Finishing: Any imperfections in these areas serve as red flags for a fake Rolex.
  • Water Resistance: Rolex’s renowned water resistance is achieved through precise engineering. A lack of this feature suggests inauthenticity.
  • Weight and Materials: Genuine Rolex watches have a noticeable weight, attributed to the use of high-quality materials like 904L stainless steel, 18K gold, or 950 platinum.
  • Crown Markings and Sound: Authentic Rolex crowns display specific markings denoting their sealing system, and the watch’s movement should emit a smooth, consistent sound.
  • Bracelet and Straps: High-quality craftsmanship and materials in Rolex bracelets and straps are telltale signs of authenticity; poor quality indicates a fake.

1. Movement

One distinct feature to look for in Rolex watches is the movement of the second hand. In a genuine Rolex, the second hand will not ”tick” as many watches do.

Instead, it will move smoothly and continuously around the face of the watch, creating an almost sweeping motion. This is due to the high beat rate in the watch’s mechanical movement, typically 28,800 beats per hour (8 beats per second).

If you observe a second hand that jumps from second to second or ticks, it’s a strong indication that the watch either uses the ones listed below:

  • Quartz movement
  • Lower-quality mechanical movement

Neither of the two is used by Rolex in their watches. However, some high-quality fakes may also mimic this smooth movement, so it’s important to consider other factors when identifying a real Rolex.

Rolex Cyclops

The “ Cyclops ” lens is a small, magnifying lens on the date window at 3 o’clock that magnifies the date by around 2.5 times for easier reading. When looking at the date through the Cyclops lens, it should take up almost the entire date window and be very clear.

If the date under the Cyclops is small or doesn’t fill up almost the entirety of the window, or if the magnification is less than 2.5 times, the watch might not be a genuine Rolex. This is because many counterfeit watches can’t replicate the 2.5x magnification, so they tend to have smaller and less clear date numbers.

However, counterfeited watch brands, specifically some Rolex watches do not have the signature Cyclops lens. For instance, the Rolex Sea-Dweller used to be Cyclops-free until 2017.

3. Caseback Markings & Stickers

Rolex Case back

Genuine Rolex casebacks are generally smooth and plain with no logo, design, or text, except for some rare and special editions. It is typically crafted from a single, solid metal block, usually 904L stainless steel, 18K gold, or 950 platinum, depending on the particular model. This construction gives Rolex watches notable water and pressure resistance.

Exceptions to this are:

  • Rare special editions or a few models for commemorations might have inscriptions or logos.
  • The Rolex Sea-Dweller has some inscriptions (e.g., “Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve”).
  • The Rolex Milgauss model has a unique engraving resembling concentric circles, symbolizing the magnetic flux density.

Most importantly, Rolex watches never have a see-through (skeleton or exhibition) case back that exposes the movement. If you see a Rolex watch with a clear or engraved case back (apart from the exceptions mentioned above), it is likely a fake.

4. Etching & Serial Numbers

Etching & Serial Numbers

Rolex watches feature various etchings and serial numbers that can be used to authenticate them. Here’s what to look for:

  • Rehaut Laser-Etched Crown: Since 2002, Rolex began engraving a tiny crown logo on the rehaut (the area around the dial, beneath the crystal) at the 6 o’clock position.
  • Serial Numbers: Serial numbers are engraved between the lugs on the side of the case at 6 o’clock, behind where the bracelet fits. These numbers determine the approximate year or era in which the watch was manufactured. In 2005, Rolex also began engraving these on the inner rehaut.
  • Model or Case Reference Numbers: These numbers are found on the side of the case, at the 12 o’clock position, behind where the bracelet fits. They indicate the model and type of the watch.

The engravings and numbers should be neatly etched with high precision and clearly visible under a magnifying glass. They should not be a different color than the surrounding metal.

In authentic Rolex watches, the engravings are generally very finely done. They are difficult to replicate, so forgeries often have sloppy, shallow, or poorly done engraving.

5. Markings, Dial, Hands, and Finishing

Rolex is known for its great attention to detail and precise craftsmanship; as such, the markings, dial, hands, and finishing of Rolex watches should reflect this quality.

Below lists the key elements to look for when inspecting the markings, dial, hands, and finishing of a Rolex watch:

  • Markings: All markings, including the Rolex crown logo, writing on the dial, and on the case back and bracelet, should be precise and perfectly etched. For example, the Rolex logo should be finely and symmetrically made, and the writing should be crisp and clean.
  • Dial: The dial should be perfect, with no dust, hair, or fingerprints. Also, the lettering and printing should be crisp with no smudging or irregularities. Rolex uses a special technique for applying hour markers, ensuring that they are perfectly aligned.
  • Hands: The hands of the watch should match the overall style of the watch and should be meticulously crafted. Rolex uses 18K gold hands to prevent tarnishing and high-quality luminescent material for their dials and hands.
  • Finishing: The polish and brush of the case, bracelet, and bezel should be flawless. There should be no sharp edges or unfinished areas. Moreover, Rolex watches are known for their seamless and intricate bracelet links.
  • Date Window: If the watch has a date function, the date should change precisely at or just before midnight, not gradually. Rolex models that feature a date function also have a “Cyclops” date window that magnifies the date 2.5 times.
  • Triplock Crown Seal: Rolex watches are known for being water-resistant. The Triplock Crown Seal is one of the features that ensure this resistance. This system, comprising about ten different components, screws down onto the case, ensuring waterproof efficiency.

Remember, a genuine Rolex watch is a high-quality, meticulously crafted piece of equipment. The smallest details matter.

6. Water Resistance

Rolex is renowned for its exceptional water resistance. It is achieved using a system of gaskets, seals, and a screw-down crown and case back to prevent water from entering the watch case. The Rolex Triplock and Twinlock winding crown systems help to ensure the watch’s waterproofness.

Additionally, the exact level of water resistance depends on the specific Rolex model:

  • Oyster Perpetual Models: These are water-resistant to at least 100 meters (330 feet).
  • Submariner Models: These are designed specifically for divers. A Rolex submariner undergoing a water test offers a water resistance up to 300 meters (1,000 feet).
  • Sea-Dweller Models: These watches are usually water-resistant to 1,220 meters (4,000 feet).
  • Rolex Deepsea: This model is designed for extreme depths, offering water resistance up to 3,900 meters (12,800 feet).

Keep in mind that water resistance is not a permanent condition. Over time, the gaskets and seals that provide water resistance can wear out and degrade, reducing the watch’s water resistance.

7. Weight and Materials

Rolex uses high-quality materials for its watches, which contributes to their overall weight and feel. While the exact weight will depend on the specific model and size of the watch , Rolex watches are generally heavier than many other watches due to the quality of materials used.

Below lists the materials Rolex uses for its watches:

  • 904L Stainless Steel: Rolex uses a specific type of stainless steel called 904L. This steel is more rust and corrosion-resistant and can take and hold polish very well.
  • 18K Gold: Rolex produces its own gold in its in-house foundry. They use 18K gold, which is a blend of 75% pure gold and other metals. The exact blend depends on whether it’s yellow, white, or Everose (Rolex’s unique version of rose gold) gold.
  • 950 Platinum: Rolex uses 950 platinum, meaning it is 95% pure platinum, known for its durability and resistance to tarnishing.
  • Rolesor: Describes Rolex’s watches that combine 904L stainless steel and 18K gold (yellow, white, or Everose) in the case and bracelet construction.
  • Rolesium: This term coined by Rolex refers to the unique combination of 904L stainless steel and 950 platinum, typically used in the construction of certain Yacht-Master models.
  • Cerachrom: Rolex’s proprietary ceramic material is used in bezels of models like the Daytona, Submariner, and GMT-Master II. It’s resistant to UV rays and is virtually scratch-proof.
  • Sapphire Crystal: Rolex uses high-quality synthetic sapphire crystal for the watch face, which is extremely scratch-resistant.
  • Diamonds and Precious Gems: Rolex only uses high-quality diamonds and other precious gems. The stones are always set in gold to prevent tarnishing.
  • Gold Fluted Bezel: Rolex’s fluted bezels are solid gold and have a distinctive, ridged pattern that creates a unique, light-catching effect.

The weight of a Rolex watch will vary depending on the model’s size and the materials used. A men’s Rolex watch usually has a weight ranging between 140 and 180 grams. Meanwhile, a lady’s Rolex watch tends to weigh less.

On the other hand, the fake Rolex weight is often described to be too light for the supposed-to-be materials used for it.

8. Crown Markings and Sound

Rolex watches are known for their meticulous detailing, and this extends to the crown markings and sounds as well:

  • Crown Markings: The Rolex crown is often marked with dots or lines beneath it. These markings signify the type of sealing system used and the watch’s water resistance level. For example, no dots or lines signify the Twinlock system. In contrast, three dots indicate the Triplock system used in Rolex Submariner timepieces, Sea-Dweller, and Daytona models. The crown should be finely made with clear and precise markings.
  • Sound: Rolex watches use automatic mechanical movements like quartz watches, which do not tick once per second. Instead, Rolex watches have a smooth and continuous sweeping second-hand motion. The movement’s sound, especially the winding mechanism, should be relatively quiet, smooth, and consistent.

9. Bracelet and Straps

Rolex Bracelet and Straps

Rolex bracelets and straps are made with the same attention to detail and high-quality materials as the rest of the watch.

  • Oyster Bracelet: The Oyster bracelet is the most popular and recognizable Rolex bracelet. It consists of three-piece links, with the larger link in the middle. It’s known for its durability and versatility.
  • Jubilee Bracelet: The Jubilee bracelet features five-piece links and is flexible, offering a more dressy, elegant look.
  • President Bracelet: The President bracelet is a semi-circular, three-piece link bracelet. Rolex president watches are typically Day-Date models and some Lady Datejust models.
  • Pearlmaster Bracelet: Rolex’s version of a jewelry bracelet with rounded five-piece links. It’s generally found on the Pearlmaster models .
  • Oysterflex Bracelet: Introduced in 2015, the Oysterflex bracelet combines the robustness of a metal bracelet with the flexibility, comfort, and supreme aesthetics of a rubber strap.

In terms of straps, Rolex has offered leather straps on some models, but these are rare. In contrast, a fake watch usually has poor quality, misaligned, or loose links.

Samples of Fake Rolex Watches

Here are a few illustrations of imitation Rolex watches found at Luxury Bazaar.

Iffy Fluted Bezels

Genuine Rolex fluted bezels are notable for their sharp, evenly spaced grooves, displaying an unmatched level of precision resulting from high-quality craftsmanship.

A commonly counterfeited Rolex president watch can be distinguished from genuine pieces since real Rolex watches are traditionally made from gold or platinum, providing a distinct lustrous appearance. However, fake Rolex watches often fall short of replicating these characteristics.

Inauthentic pieces may show bezels with uneven grooves, lacking the meticulous precision of real Rolex watches. Similarly, they might have a different sheen due to using inferior materials, failing to reproduce the natural glow of gold or platinum typically observed in genuine Rolex watches.

Wonky Rehauts

In authentic, luxurious Rolex watch models since 2002, the “ROLEX” name has been laser-engraved multiple times around the rehaut, with the watch’s unique serial number at the 6 o’clock position. If these inscriptions are uneven, poorly engraved, missing, or positioned incorrectly, you may be looking at a counterfeit.

Some fake Rolex watches may also exhibit a discrepancy in alignment between the engraved rehaut and the dial markers. This problem is not encountered in genuine pieces due to Rolex’s exceptional quality control.

“Quartz” on the Dial

Rolex is renowned for its automatic or mechanical movements, and it’s rare to find a genuine timepiece from the brand with “Quartz” on the dial. The brand only produced a limited number of quartz watches in the past for the collections mentioned below:

  • Cellini
  • Oysterquartz

However, many fake Rolex watches inaccurately feature “Quartz” on the dial in an attempt to explain the distinctive ticking motion characteristic of quartz movements. So, if you spot the word “Quartz” on the dial, especially outside of the Oysterquartz and Cellini models, it’s likely a counterfeit piece.

Cellinis with Date Windows or Lume

Rolex’s Cellini models have unique characteristics that counterfeit pieces often fail to accurately replicate. Genuine Cellini watches are designed to embody a classic and elegant aesthetic. As such, they don’t feature date windows or luminescent material (lume).

Replica watches , however, may display these features to enhance their appeal or functionality. Consequently, if you come across a Rolex Cellini with a date window or lume, it’s likely not an authentic Rolex but a similar model watch or an imitation replica watch.

Tudor Date Fonts on a “Rolex”

Rolex and Tudor , while both under the same parent company, have distinct design languages and elements that set them apart. One such distinction lies in the fonts used for the date window. Rolex has a signature font that’s clear, consistent, and precise across its models, with its unique open “6” and “9” numerals.

On the other hand, Tudor uses a different font for its date display. Due to their lack of meticulous attention to detail or limited resources, counterfeiters often mistakenly use Tudor date fonts on fake Rolex watches. This is a clear sign of inauthenticity, as Rolex would never use the date font from its sibling brand on its timepieces.

Lumed Hands on an Unlumed Dial

One glaring inconsistency often found on counterfeit Rolex watches is the presence of luminescent hands on a dial that has no other luminescent elements. If a genuine Rolex model features luminescent hands, it will invariably also include luminescent hour markers on the dial, assisting readability in low-light conditions.

Therefore, the presence of lumed hands on an unlumed dial is not a feature that a genuine Rolex would possess and is a clear sign of a counterfeit timepiece. These inconsistencies reflect the counterfeiters’ oversight and lack of understanding of Rolex’s careful design principles.

Two-Tone Day-Dates

Authentic Day-Date models are only available in solid 18k gold or platinum. However, a common pitfall among fake Rolex watches is the production of two-tone Day-Dates. While two-tone designs (combining gold and stainless steel, for instance) are common in other Rolex lines, they are not a feature of the genuine Day-Date models.

Therefore, if you come across a Day-Date watch with a two-tone design, it’s almost certainly a fake. This misstep by counterfeiters underscores a fundamental misunderstanding or disregard for Rolex’s established design rules and traditions.

Gold Plating Rubbing Off

One of the telltale signs of a fake Rolex watch is the presence of gold plating that is starting to rub off. Rolex exclusively uses high-quality 18k gold or platinum for its gold-toned watches, not gold plating. This means the color and luster run through the entire material and will not wear off with time or use.

However, a Rolex replica often uses cheaper materials like stainless steel with a thin layer of gold plating to mimic the appearance of genuine Rolex watches. Over time, this plating can wear off, revealing the underlying material.

Buying a Rolex is more than just getting a watch; it’s investing in a piece of renowned watchmaking history known for its excellence, accuracy, and long-lasting quality. With many fake Rolex watches out there, it’s crucial to ensure you’re getting a genuine one.

Key Takeaways

  • From the smooth movement of the second hand to the precision of the laser-etched crown and the quality of materials, these details are critical in distinguishing a real Rolex from a counterfeit.
  • Familiarizing yourself with the specific features of Rolex watches, including their movement types, case back designs, materials, and unique model characteristics, can significantly enhance your ability to spot a fake.
  • Buying a Rolex from an authorized dealer or a reputable grey market dealer reduces the risk of encountering a counterfeit watch. While vintage watches may lack boxes and papers, modern Rolexes should always come with proper documentation.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide

rolex yachtmaster buying guide

As Rolex’s most diverse sports watch collection, the Yacht-Master is not only available in a wide assortment of case metals and sizes but it has also been paired with various bracelet styles and bezel materials. In less than three decades, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection has been home to dozens of references – some of which have been discontinued – and the nautical-inspired sports watch continues to be a mainstay of the Rolex lineup. There are two distinct models that share almost identical names: the Yacht Master and the Yacht Master II.

While the original Rolex Yacht-Master is an ultra-luxurious take on Rolex’s already popular sports watches, the Rolex Yacht-Master II was purpose-built to time out regattas in competitive sailing. Essentially, the Yacht-Master is the kind of watch you wear while lounging on a boat and a Yacht Master II is what you wear if you’re racing one. Nonetheless, both Rolex watches are incredibly popular, sought-after for their sleek designs and impeccable quality.

With that in mind, if you’re in the market for a Rolex Yacht Master, there are some important things you should know about the model (such as its history, pricing, and features) before you make a decision. Here, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about buying Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches to make the most informed purchase possible. Ready to get started?

Quick Look: Rolex Yacht-Master Timeline

Even though the Yachtmaster collection is one of the newest additions to the Rolex lineup, there has been a great amount of innovation over the years. Additionally, while we didn’t see this watch come to life until the early 1990s, Rolex history shows that they had concepts and ideas of a yacht-themed watch long before it was ever brought to market. 1950’s — Rolex joins the prestigious New York Yacht Club 1966 to 1967 — Sir Francis Chichester becomes the first man to circumnavigate the globe single-handedly and he wore a Rolex Oyster watch 1992 — Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master collection 1994 —  Rolex introduces the midsize and ladies’ models 1996 — Rolex introduces the two-tone midsize and ladies’ models 1997 — Rolex releases the Rolesium version (also known as steel and platinum) 2007 — Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory 2013 — Rolex updates the movement inside the Yacht-Master II collection from the Cal. 4160 to the Cal. 4161. 2019  — Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master?

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

How much is a Yacht Master II?

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. In terms of pre-owned prices, a stainless steel reference of the Yacht-Master II starts around $15,000. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. On the higher end, the yellow gold ref. 116688 costs $43,550 retail and can be bought for around $28,000 on the pre-owned market.

Buying Pre-Owned vs New Yacht-Master Watches

The key difference between buying a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master or Yacht-Master II versus a new one is the price. For a retail Rolex model , you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment. However, this is still totally dependent on the specifics about the watch which you can get an idea of in the chart above. The price of a pre-owned Yacht-Master will always vary depending on factors like its alloy, the year it was produced, condition, and whether it is a luxury-oriented Yacht-Master or a sporty and purpose-built Yacht-Master II.

Often, many collectors turn to the second-hand market to purchase a Rolex Yacht-Master. Of course, the price is a big factor, but due to the durability and overall build quality, a used Rolex Yacht-Master represents a highly competitive offering. Because these watches are purpose-built to withstand weather and water, they tend to age well even if they have been heavily worn, loved, and used. Another reason that collectors turn to the second-hand market is to get their hands on early models. Since the Yacht-Master has only been around for about 30 years, it is still quite easy to track down some of the early references. This is a great opportunity for collectors who not only love the Yacht-Master as a watch but who also want to make a smart investment for their collection that has great potential to increase in value.

Rolex Yacht-Master References

While the Yacht-Master is one of the newest Rolex models, only first introduced in 1992, the watch has been given a wide variety of upgrades in sizing, alloys, and bezels over the years. Here, this comprehensive list outlines all of the standard-production Yacht-Master references since its initial introduction. This list is also incredibly important as a reference if you are purchasing a Rolex Yacht-Master on the secondary market, as it will serve as a great quick reference for what models have been produced over the years.

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master Features & Options

Since the first all-gold Yacht-Master was released in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line with a variety of aesthetic details and mechanical upgrades. Here, we’ll explore the different options available on both the retail and secondary market for the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master materials

Today, Rolex no longer makes yellow gold versions of their standard Yacht-Master model, replacing it with Everose (their proprietary rose gold alloy) and 18k white gold. However, the 42mm version is the only white gold version (which was only just introduced at Baselworld 2019) is the only white gold model, as well as the only 42mm model in the collection. – Yellow Gold (discontinued) – Yellow Rolesor two-tone  (discontinued) – Everose Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold – Rolesium (Oystersteel and platinum)

Rolex Yacht-Master sizes

Rolex has produced this luxury sports watch in a few different sizes to ensure that everyone has a Yacht-Master that fits their wrist perfectly. However, the smaller sized Yacht-Master models, known as the Lady Yacht-Master watches, have been discontinued in favor of the newer 37mm models. Today, women are reaching for more unisex sizes and designs, which could be what lead to the decision by Rolex. But that doesn’t mean women collectors are strapped for choice — as the current retail models are incredibly luxe and sophisticated for enthusiasts of both sexes. Furthermore, the secondary market is a great place to still get your hands on the smaller sized Midsize and Lady Yacht-Master models, and going pre-owned also opens up the doors to now-discontinued models like the solid yellow gold Yacht-Master watches. – 29mm (discontinued) – 35mm (discontinued) – 37mm – 40mm – 42mm

Rolex Yacht-Master bezel

With the Rolex Yacht-Master, the materials and aesthetics of the bezel depend on the material used for the case. With the Yacht-Master, there are bezels that consist of solid 950 platinum or 18k gold with raised, polished numerals. There are also bezels that are matte black Cerachrom ceramic with raised numerals, which are typically only fitted to the various solid 18k gold Yacht Master references. One of the less common and more flashy Yacht-Master bezels is nicknamed the “gummy bear” and it features rainbow-colored sapphires set around the bezel.

Rolex Yacht-Master dial

The dial of the Yacht-Master is quite archetypal of other Rolex sports watches. To ensure the watch is easily readable, the dial layout of the Yacht-Master features Mercedes-style hands, lume-filled hour markers, and a date window over at 3 o’clock. The dial itself is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that has a Cyclops magnification lens for easier reading of the date. When it comes to the dial color of the Yacht-Master, there are several colors and materials that have been used over the years, like the beautiful blue dial on the ref. 116622 or the luxe sandblasted platinum dial that can be found on the now-discontinued version of this reference.

Rolex Yacht-Master bracelet

The Rolex Yacht-Master only ever features either an Oyster bracelet or an Oysterflex bracelet. The iconic, three-link bracelet Oyster bracelet is a Rolex staple, and it is featured across nearly the brand’s entire collection — from the Datejust to the Daytona to the Yacht-Master. In 2015, Rolex also introduced the now-famous Oysterflex bracelet on the then-new Everose gold Yacht-Master. This rubber bracelet is far more impressive than it appears at first glance. The rubber strap is actually reinforced by an internal flexible metal blade, making it incredibly durable and sporty, while still having this elevated aesthetic that matches the overall luxury feeling of this timepiece.

Rolex Yacht-Master movement

Depending on the size of the Yacht-Master watch, it will have a different movement to fit the case. Additionally, in 2019, Rolex updated the 40 version of the watch to feature the new-generation Cal. 3235 movement. Below are the sizes Rolex has used in its various Yacht-Master watches over the years.

– 29mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 35mm : Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235 – 37mm : Caliber 2236 – 40mm : Caliber 3135; Caliber 3235 – 42mm : Caliber 3235

Everything You Need To Know About The Rolex Yacht-Master II Features & Options

Below, we’ll outline the different options available on both the retail and pre-owned market for the Rolex Yacht-Master II collection.

Rolex Yacht-Master II materials

In keeping with the inherently luxurious feel of the Yacht-Master line, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is outfitted in some of the world’s finest alloys. Many collectors love this watch for its combination of precious metals and durable stainless steel — what Rolex calls Rolesor. On the Yacht-Master II, there is the Everose Rolesor which is beloved for the warm pink hue of its 18k Everose gold components. Another great combination is the white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II; however, this is obviously a much more opulent choice at represents the top-of-the-line offering in the Yacht-Master II lineup. Of course, there is also a stainless steel option with a blue ceramic bezel for those who just want sheer practicality and durability. Unlike the standard Yacht-Master, you can get this larger, more complicated timepiece outfitted in solid yellow 18k gold if you really want to go all out. – Yellow Gold – Everose Rolesor two-tone – White Gold and platinum – Oystersteel

Rolex Yacht-Master II sizes

There are a lot of features that separate the Rolex Yacht-Master II from the standard Yacht-Master, and the 44mm size is immediately one of the most noticeable. While the Yacht-Master II case is just 2mm larger than the largest Yacht-Master, this extra-large sizing helps this watch house a more complicated dial and movement.

– 44mm

Rolex Yacht-Master II bezel

Another one of the big differentiators with the Yacht-Master II is that large, beautiful bezel. The bidirectional rotatable ‘Ring Command bezel’ on the Yacht-Master II is specifically designed to help the wearer time out a regatta. Unlike most bezels that operate independently from the internal movement, the ‘Ring Command’ bezel on the Yacht-Master II actually works with the watch’s state-of-the-art movement. Rotating the bezel unlocks access to the programmable countdown timer, enabling quick and easy setting for use during competitions. While the design is incredibly complex, the aesthetics are beautifully simple.

When it comes to the look of the bezel itself, the Yacht-Master II does differ from the standard Yacht-Master. While a two-texture timing bezel defines the original model, the real star of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is that bright, beautiful blue Cerachrom bezel. This blue ceramic bezel is featured on the stainless steel, yellow gold and two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II watches; however, the white gold models receive their bezels in sandblasted platinum.

Rolex Yacht-Master II dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II dial layout is stunning, sophisticated, and totally different than any of the other Rolex dials due to its niche complication. On the dial, you will find a variety of features including the countdown display (which can be programmed anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes) that you can read via the red arrow-tipped hand. You will also notice the central flyback/fly-forward chronograph hand, the center hour and minute hands, and the running seconds sub-dial.

The dial of the Rolex Yacht-Master II is also outfitted with 12 lume-filled hour makers for added readability. Today, the most modern references are outfitted with Rolex’s Chromalight display, which is a luminescent material that emits a blue long-lasting glow.

You will also notice a big difference between the dial of the new generation of Yacht-Master II watches and the first generation, which featured baton-style hands that pointed to square hour markers. It was only in 2017 that Rolex decided to marry the style of the Yacht-Master II with the brand’s famous Mercedes-style hands. Rolex also updated the hour markers to feature a triangular hour marker at 12 and a rectangular hour marker at 6, rather than just square-shaped markers all the way around.

Rolex Yacht-Master II bracelet

Unlike the Yacht-Master which has two bracelets, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available with an Oyster bracelet. The sporty, durable 3-piece link bracelet is a staple for the brand’s sports watches, which makes it a perfect choice for this professional regatta watch. Rolex has also outfitted this Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock folding clasp, built specifically to prevent the wearer from losing the watch due to accidental opening. This is a great feature for this model, which is purpose-built to be used during tough racing conditions.

Rolex Yacht-Master II movement

It’s clear that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is an incredible looking timepiece. But, the most impressive part of this watch is by far its movement. When the watch was first released, the Yacht-Master II was outfitted with the brand’s Caliber 4160, with Caliber 4161 making its debut a few years later in 2013.

Rolex Yacht-Master Ultimate Buying Guide Rolesor Blue Dial

The Rolex Yacht-Master II features one of the brand’s most complicated in-house movements to date — the self-winding mechanical chronograph, caliber 4160/4161. This movement boasts high-tech features like a countdown timer with both flyback and fly-forward functionality and a mechanical memory with on-the-fly chronograph synchronization, making it incredibly sophisticated. Additionally, the bezel (aka the Ring Command Bezel) is actually connected to the mechanism itself, allowing the wearer to adjust and set the countdown feature quickly and easily on the go. Rolex says it took its engineers some 35,000 hours of development to create this mechanism — and we think it was well worth it. – Ref. 116689 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116688 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116681 : Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161 – Ref. 116680 : Caliber 4161

Celebrities Who Wear the Rolex Yacht-Master

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that one of Rolex’s most bold and luxurious watches is popular among the world’s most famous celebrities. One of the most well-known A-listers to sport the Yacht-Master is Mark Wahlberg, who is already a really big Rolex fan. We’ve seen him out and about in a solid 18k yellow gold Rolex Yacht-Master II, which totally pops against that blue ceramic bezel. Mark has no trouble making a statement with his watches, and that’s clear with this stunning timepiece.

Tennis champion Roger Federer also famously sports the top-of-the-line 18k white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II, while comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres is often spotted wearing her the 18k Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 with a black Cerachrom bezel and a black Oysterflex bracelet. Other celebrities that have been seen wearing the Yacht-Master include the following list of names, although there are many other stars who proudly have a Rolex Yacht-Master in their collections. – Russell Crowe – Lydia Ko – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston – Mark Wahlberg – Bruce Willis – Connor McGregor – Emeril Lagasse – David Beckham – Guy Fieri – Steven Gerrard – A$AP Rocky – Billy Joe Saunders – Flo Rida – Drake – Manny Pacquiao – Ellen DeGeneres – Ed Sheeran

How to Style The Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master was an instant classic when it was introduced by Rolex, which means that it is incredibly easy to work it into your wardrobe. What we love so much about this watch collection — whether we’re talking about the Yacht-Master or the Yacht-Master II — is that it has this incredible balance of luxury and sports-oriented performance. Being able to dress this watch both up and down is what makes the Rolex Yacht-Master so much fun to wear. Here are just three classic ways you can wear this watch.

Yacht-Master with Bracelets

Ladies love this watch for its luxe finishing and superior durability. What woman doesn’t want a watch they can wear to drinks, diving, or lounging in the cabana? Because of that, we love pairing a beautiful two-tone Rolex Yacht-Master with bangles and bracelets that match the gold components on the watch. For example, we love the pairing of the 29mm Lady Yacht Master ref. 169623 with a gold Cartier love bracelet bangle and a linked chain. If you’re feeling really bold, you might as well go all out and pair your gold bracelets with a solid, 18k yellow gold Yacht-Master. Fair warning: you’re going to not be able to stop staring at your wrist. Chances are, no one else will be able to either.

Dressing Up With The Matte Black ref. 268655

We love this unisex 37mm timepiece because it works equally well on both men and women’s wrists. What makes this watch so special is the rubber Oysterflex strap watch that allows it to be sporty and durable. Matching that bracelet with the matte black bezel and dial really elevates the entire watch, which looks handsome and luxurious with the warm 18k Everose gold case. So when evening comes, head to the bar for sundowners wearing this ref. 268655. Of course, it will look good with a dark jacket. But, this watch will really pop if you pair it with a warm-colored shirt that accentuates the natural Everose hue. Finish the outfit off with dark wash jeans and you’ve mastered the elegant-meets-accessible look that defines this modern luxury watch.

Casual Elegance with the Yacht Master II

The two-tone Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master II is the ultimate luxury sports watch. You have luxury elements like the ceramic Cerachrom blue bezel and 18k Everose gold alongside durable Oystersteel and one of Rolex’s most complicated mechanisms to date. Because of this watch’s exclusivity, durability, water resistance, and functionality, there really isn’t a better choice for spending time on the high seas. And while this watch was built to time out a regatta, it is going to look just as good on your wrist while you lounge, swim, and play. We suggest pairing your Two-Tone Everose Rolesor’s blue bezel with a matching blue suit. Alternatively, you can pair it with a white and blue pinstripe shirt, rolling up the sleeves and unbuttoning the top few buttons to make your look feel more casual.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Rolex Yacht-Master

What is the difference between the yacht master and the yacht master ii.

The standard Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury-oriented sport watch that displays the time and date. The Yacht-Master II joined the Rolex lineup in 2007 and offers never before seen functionality thanks to its regatta timer. Powered by the Calibre 4161 — one of the most complicated Rolex movements ever made (second only to the annual calendar found in the Sky-Dweller — the Yacht-Master II has a patented mechanical memory and on-the-fly-synchronization used for the regatta timer. Additionally, the bezel is different on the Yacht-Master II because it controls part of the movement inside the case rather than just working as an external mechanism to help track elapsed time. The Rolex Yacht-Master II also has an entirely different aesthetic and features a larger 44m case with chronograph pushers on either side of the winding crown.

Is a Rolex Yacht Master a good investment?

Yes. The Rolex Yacht-Master is a good investment for collectors for two main reasons. For one, these watches have historically held great value because of their uniqueness and sportiness; however, at the present time, they remain somewhat undervalued compared to their siblings in the Rolex catalog. Consequently, they offer significant potential for appreciation in the future. Secondly, the Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury watch and is often outfitted in precious metals. These precious metals inherently allow it to hold great value as the years go on, and its premium construction guarantees that it will always be worth something.

What was the Rolex Yacht-Master built to do?

The Rolex Yacht-Master was first created as a luxury sports watch, whereas the Yacht-Master II was built as a professional regatta timer with a luxury flare. Comparatively, the Yacht-Master can time events up to 60 minutes with its rotating bezel and the Yacht-Master II is outfitted with a countdown timer with flyback or fly-forward functionality to use when timing out a regatta race.

How do you use the Yachtmaster II?

While the Yacht-Master II looks quite complicated, Rolex has made sure that using it is actually quite intuitive. After setting the adjustable countdown timer to your desired setting, you start the time. Press the top button to start the countdown timer, then pressing the top button a second time will stop the timer. However, by pressing the bottom button while the chronograph is running, that will adjust the timer forwards or backward to the nearest minute — allowing it to be perfectly synchronized to the official race clock.

How can I spot a fake Rolex Yacht Master?

As with any Rolex watch, the clues are in the details. When it comes to the Yacht-Master, you’re going to want to look at details like the adjustable countdown timer, which is incredibly complicated, making it almost impossible for fake counterfeit watches to replicate. Additionally, Yacht-Master models are luxury sports watches crafted from the world’s best materials and to the highest possible standards. If you notice any defects like dial printing or finishing looks less than perfect, there is a good chance that you are dealing with a fake Rolex Yacht-Master.

A Rolex watch is a significant investment, so you want to make sure you're getting the real deal. Some counterfeit watches may look pretty convincing, but there are tell-tale signs you can look for that will confirm a Rolex's authenticity. In this article, we'll walk you through all the special characteristics of an authentic Rolex watch so you'll know exactly what to look for. If you're ready to put your Rolex to the test, read on.

Things You Should Know

  • Listen for a ticking sound. If the watch is ticking, it's not a real Rolex.
  • Look for an etched Rolex crown logo near the 6 o'clock position and on the dial above the 12 o'clock position to confirm the watch's authenticity.
  • Check the Rolex box for a certificate of authenticity, warranty paperwork, and a manual.

Soundless movement

A Rolex is soundless because it's powered by automatic movement.

  • The mechanical movement that powers a Rolex is self-winding. You will never have to wind an authentic Rolex watch.

Smooth second hand

A regular watch's second hand will jerk from one position to the next.

Magnified glass

A real Rolex will have a date window made of magnified glass.

  • Rolex magnification windows usually magnify the date to 2.5x; the date should take up nearly the entire window. Some good counterfeits may magnify the date a little, but the date won't fill up the entire window.
  • If the magnification window is imperfect or off center, the watch is fake.

Heavy materials

Rolexes are made of quality materials that have some heft to them.

Metal construction

Rolex uses high-quality polished steel for their watches.

  • Rolex uses a proprietary stainless steel alloy for their watches called Oystersteel.
  • If the back casing looks metal on the outside but has a plastic inner case, the watch isn't genuine.
  • Some imitations have a clear glass back so you can see the inner workings of the watch. No authentic Rolex model has this feature.

Serial number

Every Rolex has an engraved serial number.

  • Between the opposite set of lugs, you should see "ORIG ROLEX DESIGN" followed by a case reference number.
  • To look up the date of your watch's manufacture with the serial number, you can use this handy online source .

Rolex crown logo

A real Rolex dial has an etched logo at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions.

  • If the etching is large enough to easily see with the naked eye, you may have a fake on your hands.
  • The logo above the 12 o'clock position should be made of high-quality metal. The circles at the end of the crown's points will be raised bumps, and the crown's outline has a different metallic sheen than the inside. [6] X Research source

Precise lettering

Each letter should be perfect, with straight lines and smooth curves.

Etched dial

An authentic Rolex dial has etched lettering inside the rim.

  • All watches from Rolex's Oyster Perpetual series (which is one of their most famous lines) bear this etching. [8] X Research source
  • The only exceptions are from the Cellini series; they have non-standard designs (rectangular faces, etc.) so some of them won't have the dial etching.

Quality packaging

All packaging should have the official Rolex name and logo.

  • Most Rolex packaging contains a certificate of authenticity, a manual, and 5-year warranty paperwork. [10] X Research source
  • If your watch is missing any of these things, it may not be genuine.

Test the water-tightness to confirm authenticity as a last resort.

  • Rolex actually created the very first waterproof watch case in history. The case, which they named the Oyster case, is still used today.
  • The Submariner is the only Rolex watch designed for deep water usage — while other Rolexes should be fine in the shower or swimming pool, they may leak under more serious aquatic conditions.

Expert Q&A

  • Compare your watch to an authentic product image on the Rolex website to make sure they look the same. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 1
  • If you aren't sure, take the watch to an experienced jeweler for deeper analysis. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

To tell if a Rolex is real or fake, hold it next to your ear and listen to the sound it makes. If it's making a slow ticking noise like cheap watches normally do, it's a sign that it's fake. You can also tell if a Rolex is real or fake by examining the second hand. If the second hand is moving around the watch in a jerky motion instead of moving smoothly at an even pace, the watch is probably fake. Also, if the Rolex feels really lightweight when you hold it, it's a sign that it's not real. For other ways you can tell if a Rolex is real or fake, keep reading! Did this summary help you? Yes No

Looks fake. Among other things the cyclop doesn't really magnify the date window.

F A K E There's no part of the watch posted in the OP being authentic at all.

I, too, doubt its authenticity, but I believe the model it's trying to be is the 16622. Releases early in the run wouldn't have an engraved rehaut.

Finish and quality zero.

spot fake rolex yacht master

Yeah even from the poor pictures that's immediately apparent to me. I'm wearing a submariner and one glance at my watch even though completely different model and it's plain obvious the fit and finish.

^^^ that, and the fact that one can tell from the picture that the metal is not platinum. There is a slight variation in colour tone between steel, white gold and platinum.

I agree, the metal looks off

the bezel has poor casting and machining. thats a red flag.

Comes with a real yacht

The red / orange writing on the dial looks wrong.

Is there anything about it that doesn't look wrong? How could anyone who's ever seen one think it's real?

The refief on the bezel (not to speak of other things) is so cheaply done, that you wouldn't find one of those in a bubble gum vending machine. This is an emetic. You need a master cast and not a cast taken from a bezel which came out of a master cast. If all fakes would be of that horrible quality, then we wouldn't have much problems with such trash, and whoever buys garbage like that, does really deserve it. How to Spot a Fake Rolex

September 20, 2024

If there is one luxury watch brand that almost everyone knows, it’s Rolex. There are many reasons why Rolex has become a highly sought-after brand but with this high demand comes flaws. A big one is the endless counterfeit, fake watches out there. So, let’s go through some quick and easy ways how to spot a fake Rolex.

Introduction to Rolex

Originally founded in London by Hans Wilsdorf in 1905, Rolex can now be found in the heart of the watchmaker industry – Geneva, Switzerland.

Rolex Sky Dweller Oyster Perpetual

Rolex produces between 800,000 and 1,000,000 watches every year. In their 100 years plus of operation, Rolex has achieved many milestones including the world’s first waterproof watch, the world’s first watch to display the date through an aperture on the dial, the introduction of the perpetual movement and the Cerachrom bezel.

One thing that people love about luxury watches is the hefty weight they have. Even the lightest Rolex has a satisfying weight compared to non-luxury timepieces. The weight and feel of a Rolex can often give away its authenticity. Rolex watches are made from high-quality products such as patented oyster steel and patented gold/platinum alloy, so they tend to be heavier than fakes.

Second-Hand Movement

Rolex are known for their sweeping movement of the second hand. Smooth. Consistent. Continuous. You can easily recognise a Rolex by its distinctive second hand, so make sure to check this detail if you suspect it might be a counterfeit.

Cyclops Lens

One of Rolex’s milestones is the invention of the Cyclops. In 1953, Rolex introduced the Cyclops lens, one of the watch’s most important features. It is a convex lens placed right over the date window and magnifies the date by exactly 2.5x. The lens is made using sapphire crystal making it durable and scratch-resistant. When it comes to spotting fakes, quality is always a giveaway. Be sure to thoroughly inspect that Cyclops before making any decisions!

Serial Number

Since the 1920s, Rolex watches have featured a unique engraved serial number, originally located between the casing lugs at the 6 o’clock position. In 2005, Rolex moved the serial number to the inner rim, making it harder to counterfeit. Before 2010, these numbers were sequential, allowing easy identification of the production year. Since then, Rolex has used randomised serial numbers, making it more challenging to date the watch but improving authenticity checks for pre-owned models.

Finally, the last tip for spotting a fake Rolex is the logo and text on the dial. Examine the font, spacing and placement. These are usually slightly off, not accurate on fakes another key giveaway.

How to Spot a Fake Rolex Yacht-Master

The Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury timepiece that exudes elegance and sophistication. However, with its popularity, there has been an increase in Replica Rolex Yacht-Master watches in the market. If you are looking to purchase an authentic Rolex Yacht-Master, it is essential to know how to spot a fake. Here are some key indicators to look out for: Best Replica Rolex

Rolex Yacht-Master

  • Examine the Dial: One of the first things to check is the dial of the watch. Authentic Rolex Yacht-Master watches have flawless and precise craftsmanship. Look for any inconsistencies in the logo, font, or spelling on the dial. Fake Rolex Yacht-Master watches may have slight imperfections or misspellings that are not present in genuine Rolex timepieces.
  • Magnification of the Cyclops Lens: The Cyclops lens is a characteristic feature of Rolex watches, including the Yacht-Master. The authentic Cyclops lens should magnify the date by 2.5 times, making it easily readable. Counterfeit watches may have a lens that does not offer proper magnification or distorts the date. Check the magnification carefully and ensure it aligns with Rolex’s standards.
  • Study the Movement: The movement is the heart of any watch. Authentic Rolex Yacht-Master watches are equipped with automatic movements that are precise and smooth. Counterfeit watches often use low-quality quartz movements that do not provide the same level of accuracy. If possible, open the case back and examine the movement. Look for the Rolex crown logo, serial numbers, and other unique markings that are present on genuine Yacht-Master watches.
  • Check the Serial Number and Model: Every authentic Rolex watch comes with a unique serial number and model number engraved between the lugs on the side of the case. Fake Rolex Yacht-Master watches may have poorly engraved or missing serial numbers. Verify the numbers with Rolex’s official records to ensure they match the model you are considering.
  • Weight and Materials: Rolex watches are crafted using high-quality materials, such as stainless steel, gold, and platinum. Replica Rolex Yacht-Master watches may feel lighter or have a different weight distribution due to the use of cheaper materials. Familiarize yourself with the weight and feel of an authentic Yacht-Master to spot any discrepancies.

Rolex Yacht-Master II

Remember, these are just a few key indicators to help you spot a fake Rolex Yacht-Master . It is always recommended to purchase from authorized dealers or reputable sellers who can provide the necessary documentation and guarantee the authenticity of the timepiece. If in doubt, consult an expert or seek professional authentication services to ensure you are investing in a genuine Rolex Yacht-Master.
