The Calypso was a Federation captain's yacht that was in service with Starfleet in the mid- 24th century , attached to Galaxy -class starships , among others the USS Enterprise -D . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation ) In 2371 , it scraped on the surface of the planet Veridian III , where the ship's saucer section had been forced to crash land . ( Star Trek Generations )
Calypso was the name for the yacht in the notes to the captain's yacht entry of the Star Trek Encyclopedia , 3rd ed., p. 83. With the latest edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia , 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 117, the name was changed to Cousteau .
The captain's yacht was the brainchild of Andrew Probert when he beefed out the details of his Galaxy -class design. Probert postulated, " In the original show the dome on the bottom of the ship was a sensor array . What I did was move the sensor array to more of a surrounding detail, leaving the dome on the bottom free. That's where I put the captain's yacht , which is a private vessel for dignitaries and captains of ships to use as personal shuttles . That was never used in the show. At one point there was a script where Picard was returning to the ship and the dialogue was, "The captain's shuttle is on the way back. Crew members, man your stations." Then the captain comes aboard. We never ever have a visual, so I suggested mentioning the yacht, but they decided against it. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 1, Issue 16 , p. 55)
Captain's yachts did not become part of Trek canon until the debut of the USS Enterprise -E 's Cousteau in Star Trek: Insurrection .

Calypso particulars
Calypso explored
The Calypso was never seen in use or mentioned in dialogue, but its name came from the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual and the Star Trek Encyclopedia , 3rd ed., p. 83. It was named for Jacques-Yves Cousteau 's ship Calypso by Patrick Stewart . Production staff wanted to use the yacht in episodes such as TNG : " The Neutral Zone " and " Samaritan Snare ", but budget restrictions prohibited building a miniature and sets.
Authors Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda delved somewhat deeper into the specifics of the Calypso when upgrading their writings for the much (color) enhanced 1992 Impel trading cards set, Star Trek: The Next Generation - Inaugural Edition (card 111).
Apocrypha [ ]
The reference work Star Trek: Starship Spotter categorized the Calypso as a Mark I Captain's Yacht.

Cousteau
NCC-1701-E U.S.S. Enterprise
In 2375, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his senior staff took the Cousteau to the Ba'ku planet as part of a plan to prevent the forced relocation of the Ba'ku by the Son'a. The yacht carried several weapons and transport inhibitors to the surface, which were deployed by the crew in order to keep the Son'a from removing the Ba'ku from the planet. Later, Data used the Cousteau to create a diversion by firing tachyon bursts into Ru'afo's ship's shields, forcing him to reset his shield harmonics and allowing Worf to transport the bridge crew to the Federation holoship. Ru'afo was able to seriously damage the Cousteau before he was transported from his ship.

Luxury shuttle vehicle carried aboard some Federation starships for the exclusive use of the ship's commanding officer. The captain's yacht was berthed in a special docking port located on the underside of a ship's Primary Hull. Captain Jean-Luc Picard commandeered the Cousteau, the captain's yacht from the Starship Enterprise-E, in 2375 when he defended the Ba'ku planet in defiance of orders from Admiral Matthew Dougherty. The Cousteau was destroyed during the operation.

What did you all think of the Ent-E Captain's Yacht which had 2 scenes in INSURRECTION ?

A beautiful spacecraft. I did like a few things on one of the design conjectures a little bit better, but it's not all that different. It's sleek, looks fast, and packs at least a decent size punch. I also like how it actually looks like its design drew from seacraft such as yachts, rather than just a mini-saucer like the E-D had.

The Cousteau was a nice addition to the Enterprise E. I wish that we had been able to see the Captain's Yacht on the Galaxy class Enterprise D in action once.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2
Supposedly there were plots written that would have used the yacht on Enterprise-D but they were never filmed.

I think the Enterprise D yacht wouldnt have been very 'actionable'. It looks a bit (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't). I think it was only used for diplomatic missions. Not like it's bad asss E counterpart.

I thought that they should have used it in Nemesis
Interresting idea. Where do you think it would fit in, or would you have added a scene for it?

Nice looking ship CJLP..Is Insurrection the only time the Capatin's Yacht was seen? Looks like I'll have to ew-watch that movie at some point
We never got to see the Ent-D Captain's Yacht and the only time we see the Ent-E Captain's Yacht is in INSURRECTION , so yes. :o

I think the D's captain's yacht was an ugly little thing. It was slow, and not that interesting to look at. However, the E had a very attractive yacht, but the warp pylons seem a bit long.
We never saw the Enterprise-D's Captain's Yacht.
One of the magazines did a "Technical Briefing" of it.
Well, the only time anyone has "seen" the details of the Enterprise D's Captain's Yacht was in the TNG Technical Manual. IT would have been interesting to see it in action and gage its usefulness.
Just because it looks ugly dosent mean that it is not functional. Look at the Apollo Lander Module.

Ooh, those sketch drawings / technical schematics are fabulous! Very intricately designed! Plus, those are probably the cutest warp nacelles I have ever seen, even beating Voyager's tiny engines. I love it! What irritates me a bit about your more photorealistic renders is that none of the windows appear to have any glass in them. I guess that's done on purpose, but I guess if you were to add even a subtle glass reflection and refraction, it could do wonders to make this look even more like a Trek ship design.

Nice. I always envisioned that it had a warp "ring" that makes up its outer edge, and it flys top first at warp.

Product Description
The U.S.S. Enterprise-E Captain's Yacht was a large shuttle built into the design of several Federation starship designs including the Galaxy-class and Sovereign-class. It was docked to the underside of the saucer section. Although it was built mainly for diplomatic missions, it was more than combat-ready. This model is die-cast, hand-painted, and comes with an in-depth magazine featuring product artwork and highlighting the ship's history and design.

Susan Oliver: Star Trek’s First Captain Love Interest Explained
I don't care if modern star trek breaks established canon, jeri ryan’s seven of nine needs to have this iconic star trek captain moment.
William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk replaced the original Captain of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series , Captain Christopher Pike, who was played by Jeffrey Hunter. Hunter starred in the first Star Trek pilot that creator Gene Roddenberry wrote and produced for NBC studios, "The Cage". Star Trek 's original pilot featured Captain Pike as a prisoner of the Talosians, highly intelligent aliens intent on keeping Pike on Talos IV as a mate for Vina (Susan Oliver), whom they'd rescued from a downed starship 18 years earlier. The Talosians would provide for Pike's every need and want through their impressive telepathic skill, but Pike would be trapped in the fantasy with Vina.
According to NBC execs, "The Cage" was "too cerebral" for 1960s audiences, with a focus on the questions raised by a difficult morality play, instead of the pulpy, sci-fi action-adventure series - "Wagon Train to the stars" - that the network was expecting. In fact, producers thought little about Star Trek actually worked . Leonard Nimoy's Spock was "demonic" , with his pointed ears and brows. Majel Barrett's Number One, the USS Enterprise's First Officer, was too serious - and a woman. Most importantly, Jeff Hunter's Captain Pike didn't seem like the right kind of leading man for Star Trek . Instead of scrapping Star Trek , however, NBC ordered a second pilot, with one caveat: the entire cast needed to be replaced.
Susan Oliver's Vina began the long-standing tradition of the Star Trek captain's love interest, and the TOS character continues to make an impact.
Why Jeffrey Hunter Was Replaced By William Shatner as Star Trek’s Captain
Nbc executives wanted roddenberry to retool star trek's pilot.
Jeffrey Hunter's Captain Christopher Pike was replaced by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk as part of NBC's bid to completely revamp Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek concept. In exchange for another shot at making Star Trek , Roddenberry agreed to most of NBC's terms. Captain Christopher Pike was out, and Twilight Zone actor William Shatner was brought on as Star Trek 's new leading man, Captain James T. Kirk. The studio allowed Roddenberry to keep one of the original characters, and since it was important to the theme of Star Trek that an alien be among the Starship Enterprise's bridge crew, Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock got to stay.
Freed from Star Trek, Jeffrey Hunter pursued movie roles instead of languishing on a television series.
Besides being asked to leave, Jeffrey Hunter simply didn't want to do Star Trek after the first pilot. Jeffrey Hunter was convinced by his wife, Barbara Rush, that he was a movie star, so Hunter refused to return to TV. Freed from Star Trek , Hunter pursued movie roles instead of languishing on a television series. Pike's stint as the Enterprise captain was explained as preceding Kirk's in Star Trek: The Original Series in season 1, episodes 11 & 12, "The Menagerie". The TOS two-parter interspersed footage from "The Cage" with new material that featured Sean Kenney as Captain Pike , now disfigured by a tragic accident.
It Took Over 50 Years For Captain Pike To Return To Star Trek TV
Anson mount plays captain pike in star trek: discovery and star trek: strange new worlds.
It took over 50 years for Captain Christopher Pike to return to a Star Trek television series. Captain Christopher Pike was little more than the answer to a trivia question until Anson Mount's version of Captain Pike debuted in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which also featured Ethan Peck as Lieutenant Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and brand-new USS Enterprise sets. As Captain of the USS Discovery , Anson Mount's Christopher Pike was a full-fledged character and a compassionate captain. Pike and his original USS Enterprise crew generated demand for the show that Star Trek: The Original Series would have been if Hunter's Pike hadn't been replaced with Shatner's Kirk.
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) rebooted the franchise with Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) preceding Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) as captain of the USS Enterprise, but Kirk is unquestionably the lead of Abrams' Star Trek movies.
Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike leads Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, in what may be the longest time ever between a show's pilot and its series order, as Roddenberry's original concepts are updated for the Star Trek: The Original Series prequel . Captain Christopher Pike, Number One, and Mr. Spock are all present in the cast of Strange New Worlds , joined by other familiar characters from Star Trek: The Original Series like Jess Bush's Nurse Christine Chapel and Celia Rose Gooding's Ensigh Nyota Uhura. But Star Trek never would have launched or become a phenomenon without Jeffrey Hunter's Pike being replaced by William Shatner's Kirk as the Enterprise Captain in Star Trek: The Original Series .

What are your thoughts on dedicated Captain's Yacht designs?
Nov 3, 2020. #4. In navies of yore, the gig formally dedicated to the Captain was basically the opposite of what the Starfleet Yachts are to the usual shuttles. The gig would have been the smallest of the boats, often nested inside the others, and useless for anything but serving as the Captain's water taxi. In contrast, the E-E Yacht is more ...

Star Trek: Insurrection. The captain's yacht aboard the Sovereign-class Starship Enterprise-E was named Cousted, in honor of the French oceanographer. Class specifications
The yacht is only separated when necessary, particularly for diplomatic missions. In contrast to usual shuttles it is relatively big - nearly twice as large as the Danube class. The Sovereign class Captain's yacht is the first one to have genuine external nacelles, while former models were equipped with integrated warp nacelles.

It was poorly maintained and barely functional. Before I left, it was removed and replaced with a second rigid hull inflatable boat, a more utilitarian craft.
The name, chosen by producer Rick Berman, was inscibed on a dedication plaque in the ship's cabin. The yacht was designed by Herman Zimmerman and John Eaves. Star Trek Encyclopedia III.
It's an old tradition that really going away, at least on common naval vessels. Nice to see it in sci-fi. I love the little details in the technical manual.
In the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 finale "Old Friends, New Planets", Captain Freeman's secret third vessel is the Captain's Yacht, a frequently forgotten part of starship design that's finally put to good use as an integral part of Mariner's rescue from Nick Locarno's Nova Fleet. The Captain's Yacht is a small warp-capable spacecraft intended for the captain's personal use that detaches ...
Here is a breakdown of all USS Enterprise Captains across the various Star Trek movies, live-action series, comics, and books. Captain Jean-Luc Picard. That's true, however, I have the TNG technical manual and it shows what the yacht would look like if detached from the Enterprise. The top side would be "dome-like" with pairs of saucer-style windows, two in back, front, and two on each side.
Mainly inspired by Andy Probert's early Galaxy bridge concepts and the overall tone of a research ship like Cousteau's Calypso but with more of that command-level Starfleet 2360s aesthetic. Design would feature modular units that could be reconfigured for research missions, diplomatic enterprise, etc. Obviously there's a ton of detail that ...

My best friend Matt - His wife and I all sat down and watched Innsurection in Bluray the other day and he mentioned this same notion - it really was a shame -- i think there is a card from the TNG "baseball" card set that shows a blue print of the Unused 1701-D Yacht. I lament the fact it was never used too.
The U.S.S. Enterprise-E Captain's Yacht was a large shuttle built into the design of several Federation starship designs including the Galaxy-class and Sovereign-class. It was docked to the underside of the saucer section. Although it was built mainly for diplomatic missions, it was more than combat-ready. ...

"The captains never used them in the series, but I think that's because they would have had to build an entirely new set for it and that's expensive for a television show. In the real world, however, it means that it's perfect for the captain of the ship to use when necessary.
