Brand: Broadblue

Broadblue is a UK company based at Thornham Marina, Emsworth, England. Andrzej Armiński’s shipyard is Projektowanie i Budowa Jachtów, and they build the Broadblue 385, Rapier 400 and Broadblue 346 catamarans for Broadblue. Yes, the hull’s are Polish-built and finished in the United Kingdom. The larger Rapier 550 is built in the UK, and there is a new 12 M smaller version also to be built in the UK as of 2021.

Broadblue’s construction is solid glass, .5 to 1.25 inches thick below the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcing in high-load areas. Elsewhere, the hulls and deck were cored with closed cell structural foam ( prior to 2007 are end-grain balsa cored ). The skeg-hung rudders are the same depth as the keels, which allows the boat to be beached for maintenance, thus avoiding the hassle of finding a yard that can haul a cat, which can sometimes prove difficult in foreign ports. The keels are integrally molded with the hull and sealed off, making them the first defense against damage should the boat be accidentally grounded. They’re each fitted with a stainless-steel shoe, making damage less likely.

The Broadblue company is a decedent of the Prout line of catamarans with large headsails and more aft positioned masts. Broadblue catamarans will suit sailors who place higher priority on seakeeping properties and ability to carry stores for extended, comfortable cruising while the Rapier line designed by Dazcat is geared towards exciting performance and fast passages.

Broadblue Catamarans, descendent of Prout, the first series builder of ocean-going cats and last one standing in the UK, has been energetically but carefully tending its product line. Last year we saw the Broadblue 385 and 435, and this year’s offering, the 415, is designed to offer the best of both in a more efficient package-less complicated and less expensive than the 435 but with more space than the 385.

It looks as though the company has moved away from the mast-aft arrangement that characterized its early models and adopting the industry “standard” location forward of the saloon. It’s also introduced a few more curves to jazz up the appearance of the deck and superstructure.
