Boat: Seawind 1260
and heavily looking at a that was built at the yard during the middle of Covid. I'm not looking to start any battles but I'm seeing some items that I'd like to sort out from either being the or the owner.

If you have any then please DM me. I don't want to poop on the brand or the owner.

Boat: Seawind 1190 sport
built 1190 sport, delivered in 2020.

Everything Seawind built was exceptional. Fit and finish of the itself was absolutely top rate, and I'm very happy with the overall design, and the little things are very well thought out and executed.

But I did have some problems:

1. They did not properly winterize the before it across the north atlantic in march. It went through a serious cold snap on the way, and as a result there was some freeze damage. They were extremely attentive about getting it rectified to my satisfaction. Also they had indepth conversations with me about what they were doing to address the issue so this doesn't happen to someone else.

2. two of the three heat exchangers in my hydronic system had defects from webasto. I wish they had caught them at the factory. Seems they were not particularly experienced at systems. But again it seems like they have a quality system and i'd expect from my conversations that they would address it.

My last area of concern is with and electronic, and it's not seawind (installation and is exceptionally neat, professional, and organized compared to most other i've owned or worked on. All the systems were well designed and integrated and performed great. But it is mastervolt . I like the , but if you own anything of those brands, you are basically on your own. I've had trouble with the keypad (replaced once), and now, after several years, the just dies once in a while. Sucks on a zero visibility night watch. It comes back if i shut off and restart (jeez, ya'd think it is microsoft just died. Just 'he's dead Jim ..' everything external to it is ok, such as voltages on terminals.

So these are / / Mastervolt issues, not seawind. I'm ok with dying, **** happens, accept that i have to deal with it. The autopilot keypad happened on warranty period, Seawind just sent me a new one. Awesome . But the rest is post warranty, and i've tried to deal with the manufacturers to get . but as many forum members may know, they've all been bought up by an outfit called Brunswick (private equity rollup perhaps?) and there is essentially zero service. I've spent many hours on the , and sent 10's of emails ... nothing !

Conclusions - seawind veitnam has absolutely top quality, and my service experience has been great. But i would never buy anything from Brunswick if i had the choice. Their is fine but **** goes wrong and they are so just not there it amazed me. hope that changes, would buy there stuff again if they figured out service.

is grounded to the . I may have missed this as I am still going through things but I wonder if anyone knows what the practice was for Seawind in grounding the 1000XL models. This little ship did not have 120V shorepower and what got me thinking about this was adding incoming and contemplating grounding the 120V. I had the boat out of for quite a while and I don't seeing any grounding plate below the waterline but, to tell the truth, I wasn't thinking about this at the time and might not have noticed. Anyway, any info on Seawind practice in grounding and/or the would be very helpful

I recommend asking this question in the seawind facebook group. Took a few weeks to be added but there are several active owners.

Boat: Seawind 1260
this vessel and am currently going through each and every system. The prior owner did an ok job but like any boat it has its issues.

I determined that the biggest issues found during the were owner related and not craftsmanship from the . Nothing that isn’t manageable.

The one callout against seawind is the .

The poly have vetus . Alone these ports do not seem cruiser worthy as they use the to hold themselves in place. “vetus cap” if you wish. It’s like a big cork on a tank.

To stop the cork from popping out, seawind used a wedge that is braced against the bottom of the floor.

To me, this is bananas and I guess someone at seawind thought so as well because they sent out replacement kits with proper inspection ports that had .

My vessel does not have this upgrade yet but soon will.

Lagoon Catamaran

where are seawind catamarans made

Lagoon catamaran was born out of a request from a Hollywood film Waterworld to build trimarans. Since then, they have banked on cutting-edge technology to create the best boat. They have also incorporated a sustainable type of boat by adding solar panels and electric engines. ( source )

Best Lagoon Catamaran

This boat provides more value for money. Although not as expensive as the other type of Lagoon catamaran, the watercraft can still give great design with functional appliances. ( source )

Lagoon 440

This boat can maximize volume to provide more space for the family. Like other designs, the interior and design are beautiful and carefully laid out. The downside- it is on the heavy side, and some may not like the pill-box square design. ( source )

Lagoon 450 F

The 45 feet boat marries luxury, style, and comfort. The ample space allows the boat to accommodate 8 to 12 people. The design is functional where you can access the bridge, engine control, and steering station in seconds. ( source )

Privilege Catamaran

The boat company is dedicated to research and technology to create the best boat that allows its owners to sail style and efficiency immediately. The company stands by being authentic, unique, and making an iconic brand. ( source )

Best Privilege Catamaran

Privilege 615.

If you like an elegant wood finish Privilege, 615 is for you. The boat is reliable for offshore sailing with its advanced navigation system. Its well-thought design enables navigation while conversing with friends and family. ( source )

Privilege 435

Tony Smith from the United Kingdom founded the company as he brought his family to sail across the Atlantic. Their goal is to build a boat not just for the sailors but for their entire family. ( source )

Gemini Catamaran

He brought the love of catamaran to United Stated, and ever since then, the brand has remained an all-American trusted brand. Their goal is to build a boat not just for the sailors but for their entire family. ( source )

Best Gemini Catamaran

Gemini 105 mc.

This catamaran brings in more value for money. The 35 feet catamaran is best for weekend sailing or long sail life on the seas. The boat’s definition is somewhat like a cabin making its owner feel cozy, safe, and comfortable. ( source )

Gemini Freestyle 399 Power

The newest model Gemini has to offer. It is a catamaran in steroids. It has a Suzuki motor DF20A that allows it to sail at 22.5 knots. The design is luxurious and functional. The open cockpit allows you to steer the boat while talking to friends. ( source )

Bali Catamaran

Under the CATANA Group, Bali catamaran anchors its brand through years of research and development. Their core is performance, innovation, and comfort. They use the latest technology to find the best material to build cutting-edge sailboats. They also make sure that they produce comfortable and safe boats by prioritizing interior and external fittings. ( source )

Best Bali Catamaran

The open plan allows everyone to have fun and party in style. It is also both a sailing and motor yacht. It has big windows and a place for sunbathing. ( source )

The cockpit has direct access to the saloon, a flagship model that provides space, allowing entertainment while navigating. Just take note of the high helm stand results in the smaller mainsail. ( source )

Seawind Catamaran

An experienced pro sailboat Richard Wards created Seawind. Their design philosophy is for long sails in the sea, even for the not-so-experienced sailors. They also adhere to maximizing space while providing good indoor and outdoor areas. ( source )

Best Seawind Catamaran

Seawind 1260.

Created by its founder Richard Ward, this model is the perfect combination of what a catamaran should be. It is stylish and efficient; it allows its owner to entertain friends and family for a daysail and allows it for an extended sail offshore. ( source )

Seawind 1600

It is not your usual catamaran with its 52 ft length. People seem skeptical about its size and are afraid it may be harder to control. However, the innovative and intelligent design allowed Seawind to create a state-of-the-art boat that could accommodate 14 people yet be functional for any oceanic adventure. ( source )

Leopard Catamaran

where are seawind catamarans made

It is one of the catamaran brands certified in Europe and America. They take their designs seriously, from the sailing power to its living space. Their materials and techniques are well thought out and backed by science resulting in a spacious, robust, and high-performing boat. ( source )

Best Leopard Catamaran

Designed by Simonis-Voogd, this is one of the top contenders for the best catamaran for 2021 after numerous reviews. The designers made plenty of innovations like new technology to make the boat lightweight and streamlined for long cruises and voyages. ( source )

Robertson and Caine designed this model. This boat design is adjusted to provide the not-so-ordinary four-cabin space. They also increased the cabin top, which gives the boat an angular and sharper look. The open cockpit offers easy access while stirring; however, it may be an issue for kids and dogs. ( source )

Gunboat Catamaran

Owned by Grand Large Yachting, Gunboat catamarans are built for spacious and comfortable living while using the latest race boat technology. The combination of functionality and science makes Gunboat a leader in innovation for catamaran design. ( source )

Best Gunboat Catamaran

It is another contender for the best catamaran for 2021. This boat is suitable for a long voyage out in the sea as it is sturdy yet lightweight. Space also provides sailors to pack more gear and equipment. Like all of the love for speed Gunboat models, this boat can reach up to 20 knots. ( source )

This watercraft is another lightweight-designed boat that promotes safety, simplicity, and accessibility. More like a luxury cruiser, this boat can also be suitable for sailing with family or participating in races. ( source )

Balance Catamaran

This company is led and designed by seasoned sailors in the world. They value design, safety, and comfort over aesthetics. They are also a few brands that offer buyer specifications before building the boat. The result is a bespoke boat that perfectly suits the customer’s wants and needs. ( source )

Best Balance Catamaran

Balance 526.

As mentioned, no two Balance cats are the same. Each boat undergoes customization to align with the owner’s specifications. Owners can add more systems in navigations or allocate living space according to the owner’s priority. However, all Balance 526 is a lightweight material that allows safe short hand blue water sailing. ( source )

While many companies make catamaran boats, always look for those built by credible and respected designers and builders. Each company has its flagship models representing its beliefs and ideas for the perfect catamaran boat. Your job as a sailor is to choose a catamaran that matches your vision for that ideal catamaran.

As fishermen, we know the importance of being able to navigate your boat in shallow waters. After all, the shallows will present a lot of opportunities to make a nice catch. Seawind 1170 first look: 39ft passagemaking catamaran

  • Toby Hodges
  • February 8, 2024

The newly launched Seawind 1170 is smaller than many new catamaran launches but should still prove a capable passagemaking multihull

where are seawind catamarans made

Over the past few years Seawind has become increasingly well recognised for its quick cruising catamarans. This 39-foot Seawind 1170 retains key core elements, including relatively light displacement, plus twin aft helm stations with excellent protection and visibility.

There’s also a removable carbon sprit and a pair of windows in the hardtop to monitor sail trim. However, despite its potential to sail for extended periods at speeds above 10 knots, this is not intended as a boat that will be difficult or energetic to sail: a self-tacking jib is standard and the mainsheet traveller is mounted on the hard top, so doesn’t present a danger to anyone in the cockpit.

Despite being smaller than the existing 52ft Seawind 1600 Passagemaker and recent 45ft 1370 models, it’s still intended as a capable ocean cruising multihull , with bright and comfortable accommodation.

It’s easy to assume that all rugged metal yachts are very heavy. While that was the case at one time…

The owner’s cabin in the port hull benefits from a queen size athwartships double berth that creates much more of a feeling of space than many catamarans of this size. Equally, the starboard forward guest cabin has a queen size bed, while there’s a smaller double to be found aft. Unusually, the galley is down in the starboard hull, leaving space for a full-width saloon with navstation.

A pair of big opening hatches in the front of the coachroof are supported on gas struts, while a tri-fold door that swings upwards to sit against the underside of the hard top creates a wide opening between cockpit and saloon.

Stowage on deck includes three large lockers at the front of the bridgedeck, plus further space under the seating in the aft cockpit.

Tankage is also generous at around 500lt for both fuel and water.

The first two prototype 1170s are already afloat, with one of them having been tested in 30-35 knots of head winds and waves of up to 4-5m waves. “Even though we were pushing it hard to test its limits,” designer and Seawind founder Richard Ward reported afterwards, “it felt strong and safe and very dry, even as we crashed off the back of the short, sharp waves.”

Production boats will be built at Seawind’s new factory in Izmir, Turkey, with the first expected to be afloat in mid 2024. This location, a modern city of five million people on the eastern shores of the Aegean, reflects the yard’s desire to capture more of the European market.

Seawind Catamarans

Cruising catamarans for real sailors.

Sail Away is an Authorized Seawind Catamarans Dealer

Seawind Catamarans has enjoyed a stellar reputation of building performance cruising catamarans for over 35 years. Their success is due to their simple design philosophy - to build catamarans that sail exceptionally well, are engineered to the highest quality, can be sailed by anyone, and provide safety and comfort to those aboard. To that end, Seawind made a decision very early on to build catamarans with a focus on cruising couples and families.

All Seawinds are engineered to offshore standards utilizing innovative technologies and materials to create a strong, safe, and reliable boat. The narrower hull designs cut through the water efficiently, getting you to your destination faster and the lines and controls are led back to the cockpit optimizing these boats for solo or short-handed operation. The only twin helm design in the world that offers unrivaled protection from the harsh sun, rain, and wind by being located behind a major bulkhead. Add to this the panoramic windows that give you complete visibility and the flexibility to steer from either side of the boat when sailing so you can properly trim your sails or dock with an optimal twin engine control.

seawind-1600-catamaran-front

A very generous cockpit allows for a multitude of options. On the Seawind 1160 and 1190 models, add some foldaway deck chairs and a table, use the cockpit as a work area, set up equipment, or clean a freshly caught fish for dinner. The 1260, 1370, and 1600 models offer traditional lounge and seating spaces in the cockpit with built in tables for comfort while making way or entertaining on the dock or hook. The Seawind 1600 offers a sliding door system with opening windows, and all other models offer the innovative tri-fold door system to seamlessly tie the inside and outside living spaces together. The extra-large opening windows in the saloon, hatches and cabins on all of the Seawind models create outstanding ventilation and natural lighting.

The open galley on the Seawind 1160, 1190 and 1260 down in the starboard hull is similar to a Butler’s Pantry. It is completely separate from the living area and no space is wasted; creating a larger galley with storage and prep space. This results in a lounge/living area equal to that of a 50-footer. The Seawind 1370 and 1600 have a galley on the main level tied in seamlessly with the saloon living area. Regardless of style, these galleys make cooking a delight!

Seawind 1370

where are seawind catamarans made

The Seawind 1370 , a 45 footer, builds on the success of the  42 foot Seawind 1260.

Designed by François PERUS and Romain SCOLARI of the Yacht Design Collective (who are the team behind the ITA 14.99), it’s a fine looking boat with sleek boxy lines and reverse bows, influenced by the Seawind 1600 which has a more refined look than its predecessors. With that longeron, she is starting to look like a Gunboat. This yacht will be competing with the likes of the Catana Ocean Class (which probably sits between this boat and the Seawind 1600)

It’s a Seller The new model was designed from the ground up, and has had a very successful launch. Seawind have filled up their order book for the next 5 years.  The Australian manufacturer has built over 700 boats in the 35-42ft range, and this is their first “mid-range” cat.

The Seawind 1370 has gone for a galley-up design like the 1600, with an Open design with saloon, galley, cockpit and helms all on one level. They have opted for the usual Seawind mix of performance and comfort that is comparable to a Nautitech. It’s more of a fast cruising cat than a performance cat. Even so, this is built with a completely different philosophy to something like the Bali Catspace which is targeted squarely at the charter market. The 1370 is targeted at owners setting off on long passages.

The boat weighs in at 11 tonnes–very light for a 45-footer, and she will soak up weight well for longer passages. She is available in 4 configurations: 3 cabins/2 heads, 3 cabins/3 heads, 4 cabins/2 heads and 4 cabins/4 heads.

  • Light and nippy (11 tonnes light)
  • Constructed using Closed Cell PVC Foam (no balsa)
  • Good load carrying capability
  • Points well upwind for a keel cat
  • Fully protected helms
  • Sheets, reefs and halyards lead aft to electric winches at the helms
  • A low boom that hugs the coachroof: it’s easy to access the mainsail, and this keeps the centre of effort low making a for seaworthy boat in a blow.
  • Open plan living maximises the living space.
  • Above average finish for a production cat.
  • Great ventilation at anchor with 2 forward windows that open right up.
  • Forward facing nav station
  • Lots of solar power negating the need for a generator
  • Good value. Seawinds are built in Vietnam.
  • Visibility from the helm. Seawind have worked hard on this with sliding windows in front of the helm and clean sight lines, but the bottom line is that you helm from inside. That’s your compromise for all that protection from the elements. There are clear panes above the helms to check the sails and you can perch on the deck beside the helm but it is more enclosed than the 1260 and 1600 which has more “half in, half out” helms.
  • No visibility of the mainsail from the saloon.
  • In marinas, you are going to be running between those helms to check your distances. Whatever anyone says, you won’t trust your judgement looking through glass.
  • The outside dining area is pretty small for a 45 footer.

Seawinds are known for their sailing ability and the 1370 shouldn’t disappoint on that front. She comes with an 80 sqm square top mainsail and a 36 sqm self tacker. They have moved the mast back on this design versus previous models which gives you a more powerful jib and a nicely balanced sail set up (which is an old Prout trick by the way).

The 1370 has fixed keels so she won’t point as high as a daggerboard cat like the Balance 482 but she’s no slouch upwind, particularly when the wind freshens up.

Balanced Sail Plan The larger jib is somewhere between a traditional self tacking solent and a manual tacking genoa which will help in lighter winds without having to fly sails off the bowsprit. At only 11 tonnes, she will get going quickly.

where are seawind catamarans made

The boom on the Seawind 1370 is low which lowers the centre of effort of the mainsail: all helping her seaworthiness and it also helps to improve the ride. The hull shape has been designed to reduce pitching and give you a smoother motion through the waves.

The hulls are chimed (a design feature perfected by Catana and something that has evolved from the 1600) to give you more living space, particularly in the aft cabin. The hulls are still slender and that means they will still slip through the water nicely.

Bridgedeck clearance is a decent 0.85m with a little wave breaker to help disperse wave energy in a seaway. The weight distribution (fuel, water etc) has been kept low, following the Seawind design DNA.

Fully Protected Helms….the Seawind Way The helm position is typically Seawind: fully protected with views forward through the saloon. All working lines lead back to the helm with 2 winches and clutches at each helm station. If you want even further protection, you can head to the forward facing nav station in the saloon. With covers and clears up, you can extend your protected area all of the way back.

Clear panels above the helms give you a view of your sails from the helm seat and if you want to go for more sailing feel, you can perch on the side of the deck and helm from there. It is noticeable that the design is more enclosed than the 1600 or even the 1260 which has more “half in, half out” double helms.

Options for your sail locker include a screecher, flown off the end of the longeron, gennaker and a spinnaker,

Construction

The 1370 is constructed using PVC closed cell foam: no balsa is used unlike some of the more popular French production catamarans. The hulls are reinforced with a combination of E-Glass and carbon fibre and the bow area has a skin of kevlar to protect against impact. This catamaran has been designed to be a tough boat for world cruising.

Living Space

The saloon and aft cockpit are on one level and the whole space opens up creating one big living platform. There are some nice touches here, like the breakfast bar that extends off the galley into the aft cockpit. The saloon table sits to port and a U-shaped galley is starboard behind the forward facing nav station.

Good Flow There’s a nice flow to the design with the starboard steps down into the hulls further forward. The forward windows open right up to maximise the ventilation at anchor.

It’s not huge in the saloon compared to other production cats, but that’s because the saloon is tucked behind the mast which is in itself positioned further back to balance the sail plan. That keeps the weight off the bow remember, you can’t have everything.

When you open the whole area up, however, there is plenty of space.

where are seawind catamarans made

Thanks to those inboard and outboard chimes, there’s also plenty of room down below for such a nippy cat, particularly in the master cabin forward but also in the aft cabin(s) where you have a full double berth.

With over 2m of head height throughout the 1370, this is a boat that feels roomy down below. The master cabin has a big double arranged athwartships with views over the sea and plenty of ventilation.

3 Cabin 2 Heads version

The coachroof will fit 1900W of solar, more than they currently fit on the 1600. With an option for lithium batteries from Mastervolt, you can provide all of the power you need by running your engines every now and then to top up your batteries. This includes being able to run stuff like A/C, induction stove tops, electric oven and a microwave.

The standard power unit is twin Yanmar 40HP sail drives with an option to upgrade to 45HP, and maybe even 57s which have the same block size as the 45s. It’s worth the upgrade as you’ll get the same boat speed with less revs and with a lower fuel burn for a minimal weight penalty.

Is there an option for daggerboards? No. The 1370 has been designed as a robust world cruiser. She’s not bad upwind though.

What size dinghy is optimal for the 1370? Seawind are recommending a 3.6m tender

What is the Price of a Seawind 1370? How much does this catamaran cost? We will state our usual qualifier, which is that the price will heavily depend on the options you go for, but to give you an idea, you will start the conversation at around US$700,000 ex tax. Add around $150k for options. It is competitively priced against other cruising catamarans.

We really like the look of the Seawind 1370 and there are some nice design touches on this catamaran. Seawind have obviously focused on the detail, an example being the design of the anchor and bridle system. She looks a great compromise between comfort and performance and has been built to withstand some knocks.

I’d need to test out that helm position and visibility sailing and when in the marina. She is going to be easy to back into a berth with dual controls for the engines- it’s more manoeuvring around the marina and trimming your sails that I’d want to test. Your only problem might be getting hold of one, as the demand for this new design has been so high.

Seawind 1370

The builder based first in Australia and then in Vietnam is well-known in the 35 to 42-foot market with more than 700 catamarans built. The recent Seawind 1600, much more modern in design, was therefore a wake-up call since a little sister, the 1370, has been announced for 2021.

Much lighter than most of her competitors, she is intended to be more powerful while being able to accept a large payload. The design is very contemporary with strongly inverted bows - a break with the smaller models - but the care taken with the interior ventilation, visibility, comfort at the helm and ease of handling are all part of Seawind's DNA.

Seawind 1260 catamaran.

The Seawind 1260 was named the best sailing catamaran under 50 feet by Cruising WorldMmagazine in 2018. It was designed for serious bluewater cruising and is based on the earlier Seawind 1250 with upgrades and refinements. The spacious living area with brilliant natural ventilation, protected cockpit lounge, and social helm seats create an open, indoor/outdoor lifestyle. While the robust and comfortable design contributes to it being a safe and luxurious offshore cruiser.

Table of Contents

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

Seawind has been manufacturing and designing cruising catamarans for over 35 years. Originally established in Australia, the Seawind 1260 is built in Vietnam after production was moved there a few years ago. These boats are constructed as full female molded hulls and decks, with a gel coat exterior finish and molded-in non-slip surfaces on the deck areas. Composed of infused vinylester and polyester hulls with a foam core, these the Seawind 1260 has a rigid structure resulting from the continuous deck joint, which is securely fibreglassed along its entire length.

Under the deck, the midships area nacelle where the water storage tanks are located keeps the weight down low and also breaks the waves to reduce heavy slamming faced by some catamarans. The narrow hull are designed to keep weight out of the ends to minimize hobby-horsing. The uncommon reverse sheer on the deck creates plenty of headroom in the passageways below while minimizing the freeboard in the bows.

Side decks are wide and airy, allowing for easy and safe access forward. Relatively clear, flat space on the foredeck and seating area aft of the trampolines is ideal for living aboard, sunbathing, and enjoying sundowners. The handholds and steps are useful to access the hardtop and mainsail, where the angled sides and large windows would otherwise make this a challenge.

The Seawind 1260 can easily be single-handed with all the sheets run aft to the dual protected helms. The roller furling self-tacking headsail and autopilot make for easy sailing, and the full batten main delivers sailing performance while the hull design performs equally well under power. The helm is light and responsive, contrary to a characteristic sometimes attributed to catamarans. Moving between the helms during tacking and gybing is quick and easy, with a clear path between the two.

The traveler is mounted on a solid arch aft of the hardtop, reducing clutter in the cockpit and providing a suitable location to mount solar panels. A soft-top stretched between the arch and hardtop offers additional protection from the weather.

The big drawcard of this model is the innovative trifold door system, which permits the saloon and cockpit to become one large combined space. This door system allows the boat to convert from having the security of a center bulkhead separating the outdoor cockpit and internal saloon into a large alfresco dining and living space. The door folds away and stows up into the underside of the cockpit roof, creating excellent natural ventilation and makes the boat feel much larger than it is.

Moving from the cockpit to the saloon, you have an excellent space for both sailing and living. Designed with a pair of oversized hinged windows forward allows for excellent ventilation, provides security, and makes possible the 360-degree views from both the helm and saloon seats. The saloon table seats seven with an additional two accommodated on a moveable seat. The movable seat also converts the lounge into a single day bed, and the table lowers to transform into a double bed.

The nav station is beside the lounge on the port side, and the chart plotter can conveniently rotate to be visible from this inside seated position making it very convenient for those on watch. All the furniture is of composite construction. Panels and shelving are foam core laminated, with no plywood used throughout the entire boat. This results in the Seawind 1260 being light in weight and of durable construction.

The inline galley is mounted down on the starboard side in both charter and owner’s versions. Large windows in each hull provide the cook with a great view, and open space into the saloon allows for excellent ventilation. Ample storage is available in the galley, both under and over the bench, and neatly finished with timber door fronts. A double bowl sink, three burner LPG stove, and 130 liter refrigerator add to the quality of life aboard, while co-ordinated Polystone counter surfaces and timber accents add to the aesthetic appeal.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Seawind 1260 sleeps up to eight, with three double cabins in the owner’s version, where the entire port hull is a single stateroom. The charter version has four double cabins. Both versions come with two bathrooms, and the saloon lounge can convert to accommodate another double. This makes this catamaran suitable for three couples, two families, or mixed groups.

A recommended maximum loading of 2,500 kg allows for all the equipment and provisions you could want for life aboard and extended cruising. All cabins feature plenty of hatches for ventilation. Recessed 12volt lighting and simulated timber flooring create a comfortable atmosphere to relax. Both heads have a large number of cupboards and shelves; all finished to very high quality. With built-in 130 and 110 liter holding tanks, waste can be pumped out at shore stations or directly overboard when permitted. Vanity basins with hot and cold pressurized water and adequate mirrors and bench space make for comfortable cruising.

Best Cruising Catamarans

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: July 1, 2021

multihulls

Cruising catamarans have been around for decades, but early models—often plywood and fiberglass vessels built by their owners from plans and kits, kept the boats on the fringes of mainstream sailing. That all changed, though, as big roomy cats were discovered by sailors who went off to charter in the Caribbean, where the multihulls proved their worth as comfortable liveaboard and party boats.

Today’s bluewater catamarans roam the globe, carrying families to exotic destinations across the Pacific and beyond. Just as with their monohull cousins, there is no best catamaran. Instead there is a wide variety of designs, ranging from small catamarans that offer the ease of maintenance a couple might enjoy to performance catamarans capable of easily knocking off 250-mile days. Today, the best catamaran brands offer a range of size models and layouts that can be optimized for an owner sailing with family and friends, or for the charter market, where there’s a demand for four, five and even six cabins worth of accommodations.

The most prolific catamaran manufacturers are in France and South Africa where yards include both large-run production builders and niche companies building fewer than 10 boats a year.

The best cruising catamarans offer good load-carrying ability and respectable performance. As with any sailboat , a modern catamaran’s design is a result of compromises. Daggerboards or keels? Galley up or galley down? Spacious owner’s cabin or extra bunks? There are lots of options to choose from—and that’s what makes looking at these sailboats fun!

Here, then is an eclectic A to Z list of some of the best catamarans that have helped shaped the evolution of how we live and sail on two hulls.

Antares 44i

Antares 44i catamaran

Now built in Argentina as a full-fledged, bluewater catamaran and cruiser that can be safely operated by a shorthanded couple or family crew, the Antares 44i features a fully covered cockpit with a quartet of big, standard solar panels recessed within the hardtop, one example of a yacht capable of long-range passagemaking.

Atlantic 42

Atlantic 42 Catamaran

Almost 30 years ago, yacht designer Chris White revolutionized catamaran design with the first in his series of Atlantic cats, the primary feature of which was the innovative mid-ship sailing cockpit forward of the main cabin. The smallest in the Atlantic line, the 42 remains White’s most popular design ever.

Bahia 46 catamaran

Fountaine-Pajot has built so many outstanding cruising catamarans that it’s difficult to narrow down any single boat, but we’ve always been fans of the good-looking, well-thought-out Bahia 46. At 46 feet, the boat is large enough for offshore forays and has plenty of volume; with its simple but powerful sail plan, it’s also an excellent performer.

Catana 471 catamarans

Beginning around 1996, the French builder Catana was one of the first companies to manufacture fully found cruising cats for private ownership, and this Christophe Barreau design, which enjoyed a nearly 10-year production run from 1997-2006, was emblematic of this first generation of safe, fun, long-legged offshore voyagers.

Click here to see more cats from Catana.

Catana 50 catamaran

When it comes to speed, light boats are fast ones. And if you wish to save weight, that means exotic modern materials like carbon. Catana now infuses the laminates of their entire production line with carbon fiber, and for this list, we’ve chosen the Catana 50 Carbon, one of the zippiest cats now crossing oceans.

Click here to read about a couple’s charter aboard a Catana 50.

Gemini 105M

Gemini 105M catamaran

Pioneering catamaran sailor, builder and designer Tony Smith launched the first of his 33-foot Gemini 105M’s (10.5 meters = 33′) in 1993, and soon after found a ready and willing stream of sailors enamored of the boat’s compact size, affordable price tag, and such innovations as the nifty lifting rudder and transom steps.

Click here to read about the Gemini Legacy 35.

Gunboat 62 catamaran

Built between 2000-2005, the Gunboat 62 firmly established the Gunboat brand: go-anywhere cats that applied race-boat technology to a world-cruising platform. Hull no. 1, Tribe, was built for company founder Peter Johnstone, who then spent a year-and-a-half cruising with his family, smiling all the way.

Kronos 45 catamaran

French builder Henri Wauquiez is best known for his long career building monohulls, but the Kronos 45 cat, which he launched in 1992, was ahead of her time. Classic lines, the aft “targa bar” over the cockpit, the louvered coach roof windows, even the distinctive stripes on her hull: the Kronos 45 remains timeless.

Lagoon 380 catamaran

No roundup of cruising cats would be complete without several Lagoon entries, and the best of that impressive bunch might well be the Lagoon 380. Originally launched in 1999, and revered for its combination of quality, volume and performance, with over 740 boats built the 380 is still going strong.

Lagoon 440 catamaran

Launched five years after the breakthrough 380, the Lagoon 440 was an evolutionary design that featured a raised flybridge helm station, a unique “gullwing” configuration below the bridge deck, expanded windows in the hull and much more. With 400 boats built in a 6-year production run, the 440 was an unqualified success.

Lagoon 620 catamaran

How big can a production cat, still operable by a short-handed crew, really be? The builders at Lagoon discovered that 62-feet hit a sweet spot in the marketplace, and have sold over 70 boats since its introduction in 2010. The centerpiece of this design is the sensational steering station atop the flybridge, with expansive views of the sea and sky.

Click here to see more cats from Lagoon.

Leopard 40 catamaran

With an unmatched pedigree – designed by premier multihull naval architects Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, built by the prestigious Robertson & Caine boatyard in South Africa, and commissioned by chartering giant The Moorings – the Leopard 40 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cruising World ’s Import Boat of the Year in 2005.

Louisiane 37

Louisiane 37 catamaran

Based on the famous French racing cat Charente-Maritime, the Louisiane 37, designed by Joubert/Nivelt and launched by builder Fountaine-Pajot in 1983, was a light, fast liveaboard cruiser with full accommodations that represented a radical departure from the hefty British cats that preceded it.

Maine Cat 30

Maine Cat 30 catamaran

One of the more versatile and clever cats ever created, the central feature of the cool Maine Cat 30 is the open bridge deck/living room sandwiched between the hulls and canopied by a rigid, permanent hard top (the comfortable accommodations/ staterooms are stationed in the hulls). Ideal for a winter in the Bahamas but with the ability to sail offshore, it’s a boat for all seasons and reasons.

Manta 42 catamaran

Built in Florida and beloved by the owners of the over 120 boats built during the company’s existence from 1993 to 2009, the Manta Catamarans range included 38-, 40- and 44-foot cats. For this exercise, however, we’re heralding the original Manta 42, which won the Best Value Overall prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year contest.

Moorings 4800/Leopard 48

Leopard 48 catamaran

Another Leopard/Moorings collaboration built by the wizards at Robertson & Caine (though this boat was designed by fellow South African Alex Simonis), the Leopard 48 was another CW Boat of the Year winner with all the contemporary bells and whistles: forward cockpit, flybridge helm station and solid hardtop dodger, just to name a few.

Click here to read more about the Leopard 48, and click here to see more images.

Nautitech 441

Nautitech 441 catmaran

The Best Multihull Under 45 Feet: So said the CW judging panel in the 2013 Boat of the Year competition, regarding the Nautitech 441. But what makes this versatile platform so intriguing are the different helm set-ups. The 441 employs a single wheel, to starboard, ideal for solo sailors, while the 442 has a pair of helm stations aft.

Click here to see more Nautitech Catamarans.

Outremer 5X

Catamaran

A state-of-the-art all-oceans cat that exemplifies how far multihull design has come, the 59-foot Outremer 5X was a winner on both sides of the Atlantic, taking top honors in the European Boat of the Year competition in 2013, and following up as the Best Full-Size Multihull in CW ’s contest a year later.

Click here to see more cats from Outremer.

St. Francis 50

St. Francis 50

The flagship of the proud St. Francis line – built in South Africa since 1990 to designs by local legends Lavranos Marine Design – the St. Francis 50 is another “luxury cat” that shares much in common with an earlier 48-foot sister-ship, but packs even more payload into its roomier lines.

Click here to read more about the St. Francis 50

Seawind 1000

Seawind 1000 catamaran

Founded by Aussie surfer and sailor Richard Ward in 1982, the 33-foot Seawind 1000 is easily the most popular cruising cat ever built in Australia (the company has since moved its manufacturing and management operations to Vietnam). Roomy and airy, these cats dot the coastline of eastern Oz.

Seawind 1160

1160 catamaran

If the Seawind 1000 was a minimalist approach to cruising cats, the 38-foot Seawind 1160 is the flip side of the coin, a full-fledged long-range voyager. Among the reasons it was named CW ’s Most Innovative boat for 2007 is the unique “tri-folding” door that stashes overhead to open up the saloon and cockpit into a spacious living area.

Click here to read more about the Seawind 1160.

Sunsail 384

Sunsail 384 catamaran

Every sailboat is a compromise, and in the case of the Sunsail 384 (also sold privately as the Leopard 38) that’s a good thing, because designers Morrelli & Melvin and builder Robertson and Caine got the balance just right with this relatively small catamaran. With four cabins, the 384 can carry the same size bareboat charter crowd as her larger siblings, but does so with a decided bounce in her step. Named CW’s Import Boat of the Year in 2010, you can gauge the success of the design by the grins on the crew as they barrel down Sir Francis Drake channel in the British Virgin Islands.

Victoria 67

Victoria 67 catamaran

The French design office of Berret Racoupeau drafted the lines of Fountaine-Pajot’s new flagship, introduced in 2013, a magnificent world-girdling voyaging catamaran. Like other giant cats launched in recent years, the boat features a sensational upper deck with all sail controls, helm and lounging stations.

Wharram Tanaroa

Wharram catamaran

No list of influential multihulls would be complete without the work of James Wharram, and while Tangaroa wasn’t a production cat by any means, it showcases the British designer’s respect for ancient Polynesian craft. Wharram sailed this 23-foot-6-inch “double-hulled canoe” across the Atlantic in the 1950s, and sold countless plans for similar boats for decades afterwards.

SEAWIND 1160

The 1160 innovative design has gained worldwide acclaim for its clever layout, use of space and efficient short-handed sailing performance., performance through optimization, live, expore and discover with an 1160.

The Seawind 1160 Lite platform features timber laminates that reduce the boat weight by almost 1,000kg. The catamaran layout maximizes the space of this 38-footer and allows for open airflow from the fully-opening cockpit doors through the saloon, down into the cabins, and through the forward wet locker. With 360 degree views and plenty of natural light down below, you have a great view point from any angle on this catamaran design.

MORDERN CRUISING CATAMARAN ERGONOMICS

Live, explore and discover with an 1160.

The Seawind 1160 pioneered modern cruising catamaran ergonomics, including the transverse bed arrangement – one bed arranged fore-aft and the other arranged transverse, meaning you will always find a comfortable sleeping angle in the cabins. The broad saloon allows for a large double bed – so sleep under stars when anchored. While under way, have a comfortable nights sleep in the saloon, within easy reach of the captain on the helm. It’s these easy and natural ergonomics which meake the Seawind 1160 design the cruisers choice across the globe.

SLEEK INTERIOR DESIGN

The Seawind 1160 Lite has a sleek new interior design and fitout, with lightweight and stylish timber-effect laminate surfaces and a contemporary colour pallete. Upholstery is modern, angular, supportive and comfortable, with a range of premium interior fabrics to choose from.

LUXURIOUS INTERIOR DESIGN FOR DELUXE VERSION

The Seawind 1160 Deluxe has a sleek new interior design and fitout, with lightweight and stylish timber surfaces and a traditional yet modern contemporary colour pallete. Upholstery is modern, angular, supportive and comfortable, with a range of premium interior fabrics to choose from.

One of the most noticeable differences on board the Seawind 1160 catamaran is the new sleek interior design and fit out. The timber kit will be replaced with lightweight and stylish timber look laminate surfaces, with a new contemporary neutral colour palette as specified by Seawind’s interior stylist.

With well over 150 Seawind 1160 boats launched and sailing the world, the design has been well proven, from crossing the world’s largest oceans to chartering in the beautiful locations such as the Whitsundays, Thailand and Caribbean.

The Seawind 1160 platform enabels boat owners to choose between traditional Yanmar diesel sail drives or the significantly lighter 20hp Honda (or 25hp Yamaha) outboard engines with electric tilt, a simple push of a button tilts the engine up and out of the water so you have no prop and shaft dragging.

Full in-depth tour from Learning the Lines

"We're seriously considering the Seawind 1160 Lite for our next sailboat because of the long list of positives this catamaran has to offer. Here's just a few of the most important ones to us: Size - We don't want a huge catamaran. Seaworthiness - Plenty of Seawind catamarans have circumnavigated. Performance - The Seawind 1160 Lite is designed to sail well first and foremost. Livability - This catamaran has got a lot of accommodation and room for a 38' sailboat. All of that combined with the fact that we can set one up with electric outboards, daggerboards, and lifting rudders means we think that the Seawind 1160 Lite might be the best catamaran boat possible for our budget and lifestyle."

ANCHOR BRIDLE

where are seawind catamarans made

One of the few shortcommings of a catamaran is its tendancy not to stay head to wind on anchor. As wind blows across the bows the boat will tend to twist from side to side around the anchor chain. This effect is combatted by the use of an anchor bridle.

SOLAR PANEL UPGRADE FROM 2X 125W TO 2X 210W RIGID AND 2X 320W FLUSH PANELS

In this configuration we installed 2x 320w flush panels on the hardtop and 2x 210w framed panels off the back of the targa arch giving a total of 1060W. The flush mount panels can contour to the shape of the roof and can therefore cover more surface area, their weakness however is reduced efficiency (our tests showed a 10% reduction compared to the framed panels of equivalent wattage).

  6. Boat Review: Seawind 1260

Simply put, the Seawind 1260 is a great sailer. In 15 knots of wind on Biscayne Bay our test boat easily did 7 knots hard on the wind at a true wind angle of 45 degrees, comparable to a well-found monohull. Minor adjustments at the helm were immediately rewarded with a fraction more boatspeed, and you could truly "feel" the boat respond in ...
