If it looks like a floating Apple Store, it is because its creator was the late Steve Jobs.
Venus is the result of what happens when the superyacht concept and a design guru collide, and it was officially launched on Sunday in the Dutch port of Aalsmeer, just over a year after the Apple co-founder died.
However, Feadship, the custom yacht builder, which realised Jobs' dream for him, was giving nothing away about the price tag, nor were the Jobs family who were on hand for the naming.
In fact the only details available for the 80-metre long, all-aluminium superyacht come from last year's Walter Isaacson biography of the great man, in an extract in which he describes how Jobs revealed his particular passion. "After our omelettes at the cafe, we went back to his house and he showed me all of the models and architectural drawings," wrote Isaacson.
"As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements.
"As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were 40ft long and 10ft high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support.
"'I know that it's possible I will die and leave Laurene [his wife] with a half-built boat," Jobs said. 'But I have to keep going on it. If I don't, it's an admission that I'm about to die.'"
Jobs reportedly spent six years designing and constructing the vessel with help from the French product designer Philippe Starck, who also designed a controversial superyacht for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko - a 394ft confection simply namedA.
Jobs began designing Venus after returning from cruising between Italy and Turkey, which he described as his "best vacation" ever. He repeatedly redesigned the boat and nearly cancelled the project because of his illness in 2009.
"I didn't think I would be alive when it got done," Jobs said later. "But that made me so sad, and I decided that working on the design was fun to do, and maybe I have a shot at being alive when it's done."
The Jobs family gave the shipbuilderscustomised iPod shuffles and a note thanking them for their "hard work and craftsmanship".
It is unclear if the yacht will ever be delivered to the family, or indeed what the future holds for it.

Today in Apple history: Steve Jobs’ yacht launches — without Steve
By Luke Dormehl • 1:10 pm, October 28, 2023
Called Venus , the distinctive-looking yacht was one of the big personal projects Jobs pursued in his last years. As he told biographer Walter Isaacson, “I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.”
Sadly, Jobs never lived to see the finished vessel.
Steve Jobs’ yacht launches
The yacht was the product of six years of design and construction work. Despite the Apple co-founder’s vast fortune, many who knew him personally registered surprised that such a project would appeal to him. Even Jobs himself denied desiring such a craft.
“ There’s no yacht in my future ,” he told journalist John Markoff in 1980.
As Jobs later told Isaacson, however, the yacht represented something: a confidence that he would be able to overcome his health troubles. He began working on it around 2008, just prior to his liver transplant .
Designed by Philippe Starck
The $118 million, 256-foot yacht proved somewhat divisive in terms of its design. Although it is the work of renowned French designer Philippe Starck , it bears Jobs’ and Apple’s fingerprints. Jobs recruited the chief designer of the Apple stores to create a special glass for the vessel. And while on board, the owner could control the Venus via a row of 27-inch iMacs.
“As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist ,” Isaacson wrote. “The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high.”
Jobs’ widow, Laurene, attended the October 28, 2012, launch of the yacht. (So did his children, who used the yacht in the years since.)
Before the launch could happen, however, the ship suffered another setback. Authorities impounded it in an Amsterdam port due to an outstanding payment owed to designer Starck.

Steve Jobs' Apple inspired super yacht revealed in Netherlands
Last updated 11 years ago
Images and video of Venus were published by Dutch Apple blog One More Thing ( via The Verge ) , and show a sleek, minimalistic vessel sharing an aesthetic very much on par with the products Jobs' had a hand in creating at Apple.
According to reports, the roughly 80-meter long hull of the ship is made completely of aluminum, while huge plate windows adorn the wheelhouse, saloon and main deck entrances, giving the ship a clean, open appearance. Continuing the spartan styling inside, the wheelhouse uses seven 27-inch iMacs running navigation, systems control and other seafaring software to assist in operating Venus.
Not much is known of the cabin arrangement or number of crew needed to sail, but the super yacht is expected to be freighted from Aalsmeer to her home port in the U.S.
As a gesture of gratitude, each worker involved with the ship's construction was given an iPod shuffle with a "Venus" engraving, along with a note from the Jobs family thanking them for their craftsmanship.
Venus was first mentioned by Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson in 2011:
As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support. By then the boat was under construction by the Dutch custom yacht builders Feadship, but Jobs was still fiddling with the design. "I know that itâs possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat," he said. "But I have to keep going on it. If I donât, itâs an admission that Iâm about to die."
Renowned French designer Philippe Starck caused a small media firestorm in April, when he announced that Apple would be releasing a "revolutionary" new product of his design within eight months. After a quick denial from Apple, Starck confirmed that the "product" was in fact the super yacht revealed today.
Jobs apparently began designing Venus after returning from an Italy to Turkey cruise, which he called his "best vacation" ever. He repeatedly redesigned the boat and nearly canceled the project due to illness in 2009.
"I didn't think I would be alive when it got done," Jobs told Isaacson. "But that made me so sad, and I decided that working on the design was fun to do, and maybe I have a shot at being alive when it's done."

Marla: The Apple-inspired superyacht from Numarine
Simplicity of use, engaging styling and the seamless integration of systems — when Omer Malaz, the owner of Numarine , briefed his team to conceive a new 32 metre explorer, these were the guiding philosophies he set down. Take one guess who his inspiration was. And, just like an Apple product that you expect to work out of the box, the yard’s first ever explorer took on a 600 mile passage (with a full complement of guests) just 10 days after delivery.
Malaz hopes that Marla , hull No 1 of the Numarine 32XP series, is just the first of a breed of steel-hulled explorers that will dramatically expand the Turkish shipyard’s offering beyond the planing and semi-displacement composite performance yachts for which it’s best known. Smaller and larger XP models are available, but it’s the Numarine 32XP, at 32.5 metres, that has captured a quick market — two more have already been sold.
Large internal volumes and quiet cruising were the goal and Malaz’s team obliged with a yacht of just under 300 gross tonnes with 330 square metres of living space, accommodation for 12 guests and ample room for the stowage of matching luggage.
The Apple inspiration continues in a simple user interface that is key to her operation. It’s enabled her captain, Antonio Del Mastro, to get the measure of her rapidly. “This boat follows a logic,” he says. “It’s taken me only two weeks to learn how to run her.”
Assured of remote troubleshooting from the yard should anything go wrong, the yacht’s systems are so easy to understand that the captain has opted to run Marla without an engineer. “Aspects of the engineering are made obvious, for example the fuel transfer system, so I am confident in using them myself,” says Del Mastro.
The user interface was designed by British company Energy Solutions and a month after Marla ’s launch Del Mastro is convinced of its merits. “It’s wonderful,” he says. “It allows me to sleep a lot easier at night.”
Marla ’s exterior certainly displays distinct and engaging styling. When viewed from the water, she provokes comparisons with a trawler yacht — hardy and stout. Her superyacht wheelhouse , with its inverted raked windscreen, is perched above the deck like a turret, protected by high bulwarks.
“In creating the new XP explorer series we tried to evolve the design language of previous Numarine yachts into a more robust, muscular and angular design,” says the Istanbul-based designer Can Yalman , who was responsible for Marla ’s exterior look.
The vertical bow shape was designed to look contemporary but also to cut through the water with ease. Yalman was eager to create a shape that would be beneficial to the internal volumes. “We came up with a solution that was to flare the bow at an angle after the vertical, creating a knuckle form that emphasises the strong overall aesthetic and widens the interior cabin,” he says. “This shape also helps with water flow in waves, making a drier running hull form.”
The hull was designed by Numarine’s long-standing collaborator, naval architect Umberto Tagliavini , and promises a top speed of 14 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 3,000 nautical mile range at nine knots.
Given his background in semi-displacement fibreglass boats it’s not surprising that Marla ’s captain found her handling slightly heavy to begin with. Yet she encountered the patches of rough weather on her initial Aegean cruise with ease and for the next yacht in the series the shipyard will remedy any manoeuvrability issues with stern thrusters.
Designed for passage-making by night, keeping noise and vibration to an absolute minimum was critical, so Marla ’s cabin surroundings are disconnected from the ship structure. Referred to as “box-in-box” construction, the company responsible for the technique is Silent Line. Its founder, Sjaak van Cappellen, says: “Well-known yards can do this on an 80 metre-plus yacht but this is really unique for a 32 metre.”
It’s clearly worked: the owner says he can sleep well and is unaware when Marla is under way. To put that into perspective: 22 decibels is not exceeded in any guest area on the lower deck at anchor with the generator running. If you add air conditioning, it’s still below 35db and when cruising the level inside doesn’t climb beyond 45db — only 5db louder than an average library.
Her explorer credentials are underscored by the size of main support boat she can carry; in Marla ’s case, a nine metre Technohull RIB. Malaz’s personal experience on the water was an influence on this decision as he recalls guests going ashore in six metre tenders getting blasted by water whipped up from the local meltemi winds.
“A large nine metre tender gives an owner so much more freedom to explore,” he says. And that’s exactly what the owner and his family were after, as evidenced by their enthusiasm on the shakedown cruise. Their favourite cruising grounds are the Aegean coast of Turkey and the Greek Islands, although her owner says that for 2018 they will be heading to the Adriatic and further into the Mediterranean.
Simple, modern and stylish, the interior is punctuated with some design pieces that reveal an eye for current trends. Designer Esra Kazmirci described the priorities as being “functionality, quality, timelessness and a balance of colour and light”.
The owner had requested a relaxing environment with plenty of natural materials, which are apparent in the tactile, veined quality of the marble from the owner’s own quarry, the occasional woven basket and in the wood. The brushed oak floorboards have an exaggerated grain that is noticeable under bare feet.
The main saloon provides 48 square metres of living space. Comfortable low seating in neutral fawn colours is brought to life with splashes of colour from Missoni Home cushions. Further forward the tones darken, with the black wood of the dining table and Mirto chairs by B&B Italia, a reinvention of the classic director’s chair featuring dark brown leather and black painted aluminium.
In the slated wood panel overhead is the striking Light Forest fitting by Danish company &Tradition. It crawls across the ceiling, ending in drips of copper-skinned lampshades that represent flowers. Elsewhere other pieces, such as the Hexx table lamp by Diesel with Foscarini and Tom Dixon’s Base floor light in brass, reveal Kazmirci’s appetite for future design classics. Brass tones are dotted all over, such as in the door handles, and the colour resonates with the bronze tinted mirrors.
The master cabin towards the bow might at first be mistaken for the owner’s suite . It’s a full-beam, generously proportioned space decorated in a dominant palette of greys, laced with thin seams of copper above the low leather-clad headboard. Here, and throughout Marla , pearlescent textured wall coatings in muted violet have been provided by Clarke & Clarke.
Taking the floating glass superyacht staircase down a flight, you come to the main accommodation area. In perfect symmetry are two twin cabins and two doubles. On the upper deck is the wheelhouse and the large, secluded owner’s cabin. The walkaround bed enjoys views from glazing on three sides, the headboard providing easy access controls for lighting, blinds, temperature and music control.
Marla does not want for sociable outdoor spaces, with her 60 square metre flybridge with sunpads, fully fitted superyacht bar , secondary helm station and dining table for 12. On the main deck, another large dining table sits in shade but further aft are more sunpads and to the bow is generous, sun-drenched seating.
The superyacht beach club added substantially to the yacht’s allure for her owner. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be on a 32 metre yacht and be able to get just 20 centimetres higher than sea level. I look forward to spending plenty of time there,” he says.
An extremely sociable individual, he imagines at some point clearing the tenders from the 55 square metre aft deck to create a dance floor — with music controlled by iPad, naturally.

Apple founder’s megayacht “Venus” in St Maarten
By Sonja van der Drift in Blog with 0 Comments
Steve Jobs mega yacht Venus moored in St Maarten
Our friend Rick Moore was filming in Simpson Bay at St Maarten, Caribbean and they came across “VENUS” sitting proudly at anchor, just getting ready to head to sea! They also filmed several other yachts, including the 157ft SuperYacht “C2”, owned by Ronald Perelman.. Billionaire investor and philanthropist with holdings in Revlon Group of women’s cosmetics, and AM General which is the company known for the Hummer and Humvee utility vehicles.
Super yacht “Venus” was the direct brain child of the late Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple for many years. Co-designed by Philippe Starck’s design company Ubik and built by Feadship (from my home country of the Netherlands), this yacht elegantly boasts pure simplicity in line with Steve Job’s desire to design private, quiet places that provided the Zen like atmosphere that he preferred. Steve was once quoted as saying, “I’ve tried to be inspired by the Asian idea that emptiness is more important than fullness”
Unfortunately, Steve Jobs passed away before ever getting to see his final masterpiece come to life, but the family brought the project to completion and now “VENUS” roams the Earth in Steve’s memory with a fixed crew of 22 onboard.
Thanks, Rick Moore for sharing this informative video, about some of the more private information about the co- founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.

Ratings and Reviews
Revision of review.
We have been using the Yacht Manger APP, Yacht 6 module, for about three years now. It is without a doubt the best Yacht Manger program we have ever found. It will contain all the essential information for managing and operating your vessel; including checklists, maintenance schedules/alerts, documentation, repairs, inventory, costs, tasks, contacts, routes etc. Any info we require is now stored in one convenient program. The APP is user friendly and very intuitive. The pre-loaded data modules are a very nice feature saving you time entering information. Yacht Manager provides excellent customer service. Any inquiries we have made are responded to in an expeditious manner. I highly recommend this program for any Yacht Captain or even small boat owner. Capt. Bob U
Excellent platform!
From my sales point of view, every vessel should have such database. Highly recommend! Excellent app.

About YACHT
In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. When I was five my Mom tutored deaf students at home. One day I went downstairs and saw the students dancing around the room. My Mom had turned the speakers to face the ground and cranked up the music so it would vibrate the wood floors for them. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One meta-memorable moment is when we wrote and sold a TV screenplay about being a band stuck opening up for bigger bands. Our career has been constant ups and downs, endless tiny indignities, but most of all undying curiosity and the will to sustain. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Our operating motto is "ambition beyond means," which means our bucket list is constantly gaining entries like a family shopping list. We've been lucky enough to make a lot of our dreams come true, but we're not done dreaming. Next up: a video game.

The Yacht or Nyacht Podcast
- UPDATED WEEKLY
This podcast does one thing and one thing only: It determines whether songs are "yacht rock" or "nyacht rock." "Hollywood" Steve Huey, David Lyons, JD Ryznar, and Hunter Stair, the team that coined the genre "yacht rock" with their legendary webseries, rate curated and listener-suggested tracks on the highly-accurate Yachtski Scale to build out the playlist of certified yacht rock songs. Their analysis employs a precise scientific method that involves a deep well of musical knowledge, impeccably trained ears, sophomoric banter, and, most impressively, uses a spreadsheet algorithm to add scores & divide them by four. This may sound intimidating but fear not! The hosts let you in on their decades-long friendship and make you feel like part of the team. Can you guess how they'll rate each song? The more you listen, the better you'll get.
51. Hot Dudez In Trouble 1
Hunter holds the guys hostage and forces them to listen to the first part of his sweet ass dj set.
50. City Yacht Spectacular

48. Raiders of the Lost Requests
Listener suggestions are rated on the Yachtski Scale, with songs by Cheryl Lynn, Amy Holland, and Harry Nilsson.
47. Another Scheme
Listener suggestions are rated on the Yachtski Scale, with songs by Jim Schmidt, Kiki Dee, and Harvey Mason.
46. Bad Boy and The Perv
Listener suggestions are rated on the Yachtski Scale, with songs by The Ritchie Family, Peebo Bryson, and Johnny Taylor.
45. Man Tran Fan Clan
Listener suggestions are rated on the Yachtski Scale, with songs by Lisa Dal Bello, Gordon Lightfoot, and Ronney Abramson.
44. Deck DNA

Ratings & Reviews
Just listened to ep 44. Here’s your 5 stars. Please rate Pilot’s 1975 #1 UK,Ireland and Australia hit “January,” off their album “Second Flight.” Produced by Allan Parsons, the song is about a girl, not a month and followed up “Magic,” which is now the Ozempic commercial jingle! 😂 Love both shows, keep sailing.

An Insider’s Viewpoint
“This is our second charter with Waypoints and we could not be more satisfied. Availability and pricing were clear, communication was prompt, and the staff was knowledgeable and nice. The Vinoy Marina is very convenient to a couple of airports so the crew had no problem coming in from all over the country. We think Waypoints is the best charter company available and already have another trip booked for January in St. Thomas!” Jim K.
“The entire team from the Waypoint dock manager, office staff, and dock hands as well as mechanics went above and beyond to make us have a great experience. Sailing Sereia changed me… it was such an incredible trip . With tears in my eyes, I left the boat and I have been counting the days until I can go back and sail her again. We loved all the crew we came in contact with – thank you again!” Constance M.
“We had a great experience with Waypoints Florida Yacht Charters! We spent four days in Florida on Leap of Faith and had a great time. It was our first sailing adventure. We explored Tampa Bay, Anna Maria, Egmont, Bradenton and Palma Sola. It was a great escape! “ Mark L.
