Balboa Yacht Club celebrates its centennial with premiere viewing of historical documentary
Related Articles
For over 90 years, the Balboa Yacht Club has served to encourage yacht racing and cruising, promoted the science of seamanship and navigation, and provided a beautiful clubhouse and marina for the educational, recreational, and social use of its members, families, and guests.
California Governor (later US President) Ronald Reagan granted the Deed of Gift for the Governor’s Cup to Balboa Yacht Club in 1967 “for the purpose of encouraging Youth Racing in the State of California and the recognition of the skill and high performance of those men and women under twenty years of age…” As an invitation only match racing regatta, the Governor’s Cup was established by the late Chet and Glee Purcell. Mr. and Mrs. Purcell had a vision that a national match racing competition should be created for younger sailors, similar in format to the internationally recognized Congressional Cup Regatta. As the years progressed, the Governor’s Cup grew in popularity with its first international team participating in 1989. Since then teams from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Finland and Spain have participated and become regular entrants and often multiple winners. The Cup has served as a gateway for future champions in collegiate competition, the Olympics, Congressional Cup, Swedish Match Tour and numerous America’s Cups.
The Governor’s Cup has a special relationship with the America’s Cup with the latter having visited Balboa Yacht Club during “Gov Cup Week” twice in recent years. Norbert Bajurin, Commodore of the current holder of the America’s Cup, said it best, “The Governor’s Cup is the America’s Cup for youth.” Truer words were never spoken. BYC can be very proud of this illustrious history and its alumni from fourteen countries and territories around the world. When you watch this and every year’s Governor’s Cup, you are seeing some of the future stars of the sport.
Pathway for Champions
If the sailing careers of decades of Governor's Cup alumni are any guide, the GovCup is truly a "Pathway for Champions." Below are profiles of some of the great sailors and world champions that have sailed in the Governor's Cup and gone on to the America's Cup, the Olympic Games, the World Match Race Tour, and, in what has to be the event most different from the GovCup, the Round the World Race!
Argyle Campbell
Argyle Campbell of Newport Beach, California, won the first two Governor's Cups in 1967 and 1968, sailing for the Balboa Yacht Club. He was also a two-time All American sailor at the University of Southern California while beginning his match racing career, but hit the big time in match racing soon after his Gov Cup wins.
In 1970 and 1972, Argyle won Long Beach Yacht Club's Congressional Cup, with a crew that included Andy Rose (winner of the '69 and '70 Gov Cup).
Argyle continues one-design sailing to this day, including a world corinthian championship in the Melges 24 class and multiple championships in the Etchells class.

100 YEARS OF HISTORY
BIYC has a long and happy history. Generations of kids have enjoyed the program, learned and strengthened skills, formed lifelong friendships and returned – with joy – to watch their own children take part.
Each year, the Club is managed by the Commodore plus officers and staff. They run the meetings, paddleboarding, swimming, SUP and rowing races and are assisted by adults for sailing. An advisory board, headed by Seymour Beek, sets the standards and guidelines for Balboa Island Yacht Club. The activities and spirit of the Club have remained amazingly unchanged for a hundred years.

EXCERPT FROM 1928 COMMODORE DAN MURPHY'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Early in summer vacation, a newcomer to the island would be asked to have his youngsters (ages 6 to 16) join BIYC, the children’s yacht club in the area. It had recently been started by Mr. Beek, and when we got there, it was a going concern with a meeting place, activity schedule, young officers, and committee members. The purpose of the club was, of course, to promote healthful activities and give youngsters some responsibility with respect to the organization. These purposes were fulfilled admirably. Every weekday there was something doing: Monday model-boat racing, Tuesday swimming races, Wednesday sailing races, Thursday rowing contests. Each Friday was a wiener roast or barbecue in one of the vacant lots in the area. The early officers of the club were the older children.
At the beginning, all boats were often converted rowboats with a mast or two and a centerboard or leeboard. Gradually, class boats came into being. First, there was the Marion class, a 15-foot gaff-rigged catboat, and the Sea Mew, the same length but considerably slower and wider. Soon after came the Snowbirds - a 12 footer with good sailing qualities. It took the bay by storm, and the annual “Flight of the Snowbirds” witnessed hundreds of the little boats, all sailed by youngsters competing for prizes. Later came the Star boats.

From 1924 on, we spent the summertime in Balboa first renting a house while ours was built. My father bought a lot at 546 S. Bay front on Balboa Island. We first rented a house at 133 Pearl for the first three summers. The pier was built in 1927 and we moved into the house in 1928. It had 6 bedrooms upstairs. We called that house the “Hurricane deck” because there was always something going on. We had our friends visit often. Our pier in front was the meeting place for all the sporting events for the BIYC: swimming, sailing, paddle boarding, rowing, diving, and canoeing. Mother ran the show most of the time. I had a regular group of girlfriends. They called us the “howling” mob. They came from several different cities in So. California. Their families had summer cottages on the island. Very few people lived there all year. I don’t think anyone had heat in their homes. We sailed a 12- foot wooden hulled cat boat called Snowbirds. Ours was number 10 and called Shenanigan. They were easy and safe to sail. We went all over the bay, often getting stuck on the sandbars and mud flats. At times we went to Harbor Island for picnics and a swim “a la nude.” There were no houses on that island then. Other times we sailed to the entrance of the bay and had a picnic at China Cove. It wasn’t named that then. The entrance to the harbor was crooked due to the many sand bars. If we wanted to get out to the ocean, we had to watch the tides and never were allowed out without two or three boats together. I was brother Bill’s crew for races most of the time. On weekends we sailed at the Southland Sailing Club now the Balboa Yacht Club and also the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. We would always do fairly well, but seldom first place. My father always insisted that we were able to swim well. We had to swim across the bay from J.A. Beek’s pier to the pavilion, usually on Sundays when my father would be down for the weekend and the water was calm. On special occasions we went to Emerald Bay for picnics. We went with neighborhood kids. We would body surf in from our boats anchored out beyond the waves. We explored the tide pools and used plow holds of kelp for our anchor. Once we explored an old movie set of a Venice village built around 1924 for a movie. There were no houses, just a beautiful empty beach. We either went by cars or boats. Father bought a 41’ wooden hull sloop from his brother (Hayes Murphy) in Connecticut. He had it shipped on a freighter through the Panama Canal into LA harbor. It was a slow, seaworthy boat. On it we would anchor and swim to shore at various beaches along the So. California coast. Our time with the Balboa Island Yacht Club was busy. Mr. Beek organized trips to Catalina Island. We went there on weekends. There were usually three or four boats, and his favorite cove was 4th of July Harbor. We also went to San Clemente Island a couple of times. It was a barren island with little round cacti that were hard to see, but easy to pick up thorns through our tennis shoes. Ouch! Santa Cruz Island was our favorite. We hoped to get there once every summer and see the fresh waterfall and the painted caves. I attended several regattas in Long Beach and Santa Barbara, but I was too young to do much else. I crewed for my brother Bill on the Snowbird in both harbors seemed very large.

DICK MUNROE MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is presented to the Most Outstanding Competitor of BIYC. It is a memorial trophy honoring BIYC member Dick Munroe, who lost his life in World War II. Dick was a terrific all-around sportsman, so his trophy is awarded based on a calculation that gives points for every event. Final tally honors top ten kids who accumulate the most points for all their activities. Sailing is included, so highest ranks generally end up going to those who sail. Winner is considered All-Around Champion of the Club.

EXCERPT FROM 1950 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE BY JOSEPH ALLEN BEEK
"The Balboa Island Yacht Club was formed in 1922 for yachtsmen from six to sixteen years of age, was to elect flag officers, conduct its own affairs, have no dues or assessments but always have money in the treasury; this last matter to be attended to by the one adult member, who became the honorary staff commodore.
"The juniors took measures into their own hands and levied dues of twenty-five cents a year and adopted a money raising device which makes the finance committees of senior yacht clubs look like pikers. They hold a club picnic every other Tuesday, charge everybody fifty cents for the feed, put the proceeds in the trophy fund, and let the mothers supply the food! Fathers are allowed to contribute cash if they wish, so it is no wonder that their trophy display frequently outshines that of the senior yacht clubs."

MRS. BEEK ON THE DOCK ON A TUESDAY MORNING
MEMORIES FROM 1972 SEC | TREAS DIANE BIRNIE BOCK
In those days, Swimming was timed by Moms — it switched to kids when Quincy was Commodore in 2005. Mrs. Beek, the only Grandmother always, always rowed one of the boats. She was very strong and very meticulous about keeping the finish line straight. Whoever rowed the other boat had a big job keeping even with Mrs. Beek’s boat.
In this photo, she is holding the number cards for Diving - so this shot must have been taken between Swimming and Diving. She sat on the top part of the dock near the flag pole. Each age group would line up and give her their names and then walk down to the float for the competition. She recorded the scores of the three judges: one sat right next to her near the flag pole, one was on the beach and the main judge stood on the float right next to the Diving Board….. The scores were neatly recorded in a certain format in her distinctive handwriting. Afterwards, she handed the book to the Diving Chairman (the judge down on the dock) to do the calculations and keep the records.
Mrs. Beek told me that she especially liked to do this job because she also kept the Munroe standings and having a brief, direct contact with each child helped her to recognize each and every kid in the club. When she died, my mom Barbara (Potter) Birnie did that job from 1981 until 2009 when BIYC’s Diving competition ended.

ORIGINAL DOCKMASTER
Previously, the dock was unattended but Mrs Beek hired Larry in the mid-60s to help out. He was also known for long-distance paddleboarding trips, which were remarkable. He was a huge movie buff and started the tradition of showing movies at the foot of various streets on the island, including Onyx at the South Bay Front and at the tail end of Balboa Ave on the Little Island. These were old fashioned reel-to-reel, which he stored in the rafters of his tiny place on Topaz. One summer, he injured his shoulder and wore a cast for several weeks .

WORLD WAR II AWARDS REUNION IN 2005
During World War Two, BIYC did not award competitors with trophies because metal was needed for the war effort. Instead, scrolls were presented and the intention was that “real” trophies would eventually be available after the war ended. This finally happened in 2005 – Commodore Quincy Bock had heard her Great-Uncle Ralph facetiously grumble about it and decided to round up as many BIYCers from the early 1940s as she could to present real trophies…. albeit sixty some years later.
The event was covered by the LA Times, OC Register and local Newport Beach papers. Coverage highlighted the extra special bonds that BIYC fosters.

CAUTION: When approaching from the south, do not turn into the mooring field until you are past buoy 14.5. There is a large sandbar stretching across the south end of the mooring field.
The Club offers swing moorings and provides a 24 hour Spanish speaking launch service (personal tenders are not allowed in the mooring field). Capacity is limited and it is difficult to obtain a buoy here during the high season (January through April). Reservations in advance are not possible.
The Clubhouse, which burnt down 1999, will never be rebuilt, but there is a new restaurant and bar open to the public. There are also showers, laundry, WiFi and haul out facilities, using a railway.

Let it first be said that we’re talking about the Bahia Corinthian
Yacht Club. Not the Balboa Bay Club, not the Balboa Yacht Club, and
definitely not the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
Get this wrong and you’re in for some pain, former commodores of the
Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club joke. With the history that they have in
mind, and the efforts to find a unique name as well as own their own
property, it’s no wonder they’re proud of their identity.
Known at this time of year as the party place on the eve of the
Newport to Ensenada Race, the Bahia Corinthian boasts a history few
non-boaters know.
Founded in 1958 by 10 yachtsmen, the first version of the group was
called the Bahia Yacht Club and leased a room from the Balboa Bay Club.
But one of the first things members did was change its name -- they added
“Corinthians” to the title so as not to share an acronym with the Balboa
Yacht Club.
“Corinthians” means an amateur, nonprofessional yachtsman, said Lorin
Weiss, the original vice commodore for the club. “Bahia” means bay and
was also the name of the boat belonging to the group’s very first
commodore, Don Bussey.
In 1968, the club joined with the Orange Coast Yacht Club, of which
Weiss was a founding member. They chose to go by the name “Bahia
Corinthian Yacht Club” because of the recognition commodore Pat Dougan
had brought to the club when he purchased the 12-meter Columbia, a boat
that had won the America’s Cup a decade earlier.
“Pat Dougan became famous in yachting circles,” said Brian Carter,
also a founding member who joined the club in 1964. “With Dougan’s
stature, we were able to negotiate for the purchase of the old
Richardson’s Yacht Anchorage.”
This was a big deal for the club.
“In the ‘60s, the primary interest of most yacht club members here was
to race, and to race you had to belong to a yacht club that was a member
of the Southern California Yachting Organization, and to do that you had
to be a dues-paying member of a yacht club,” Carter explained.
Which is why many clubs of that day were formed merely on
“letterhead.”
But the Bahia Corinthian did not at that time buy the anchorage on
which it still sits today. Instead, they leased the property --
including land and marina -- from the Irvine Co. until 1993, when they
finally purchased it.
“We grew and prospered through trials and tribulations and that sort
of thing,” Weiss said. “We built the present clubhouse and moved in in
1971. We’re one of the few yacht clubs on the West Coast that owns its
own yacht club, land and marina.”

Business name : Balboa Yacht Club
In 1922, when Newport Harbor was more shoals and sandbars than open water, the Southland Sailing Club, soon renamed the Balboa Yacht Club, was formed by a small group of sailors wanting an active organization with an emphasis on family sailing. From its beginnings in a small wooden structure on open, sandy Balboa Peninsula, BYC has evolved to become one of southern California’s most prestigious yachting organizations. In 1926 the Club moved to a new clubhouse on the southeast corner of Little Balboa Island, a stone’s throw from its present location on Bayside Drive. Over the fireplace hung a burnished wood plaque bearing the Club’s motto, “A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.” Originally donated by the first commodore, Isaac B. Potter, the plaque hangs today over the present Club’s dining room fireplace.
The Newport Harbor of the past began to change as dredging began in 1935, and the following year the harbor we know today was officially opened for navigation. Balboa Yacht Club, with it’s prime location near the harbor entrance, now had a convenient, protected anchorage for its growing fleet.
BYC signed a lease with the Catalina Island Company in 1957 giving them an outstation site at Whites Cove west of Avalon. Thanks to members’ untold hours of hard work, from cement work to landscaping, from plumbing and wiring to carpentry and painting, this facility is now a treasured getaway site for members to enjoy. The Clubhouse and facilities on Bayside drive have evolved over their half-century of use to meet the changing yachting needs of the membership and to provide a comfortable environment for a wide variety of social activities. A detailed history of Balboa Yacht Club includes a litany of its members’ successes in some of yachting’s most highly acclaimed competitions. Its cruisers have ranged worldwide in their boats. In fact, Baja California and the coast of mainland Mexico are as familiar to many of the members as the coves of Catalina.

Tolyatti: A Russian Homage To Italy
This is the curious story of a Russian city named after an Italian politician, Palmiro Togliatti.

This is the curious story of a russian city named after an italian politician, palmiro togliatti.
There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.
Who was Palmiro Togliatti?
If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.
Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.
Tolyatti, the Russian city
The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.
Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.
Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.
