Drake Hints At ‘Graceful’ Retirement In Lil Yachty Interview

Drake has opened up about planning his first steps toward hanging up his mic and making a “graceful” exit from the music industry.

The 6 God recently sat down for a picturesque interview with Lil Yachty on the beach where he teased having retirement on his mind.

“I think I’m at the point now where I just wanna like — I feel like maybe we talked about this the other day. I feel like I’m kinda introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit,” he said in the first clip from their chat shared on Thursday (February 23).

Once upon a time, Drake said he wanted to retire by 35 in the early stages of his career. However, that age came and went with the 6 God turning 37 later this year.

The OVO boss has been reluctant in recent years to embrace the idea of ever walking away from music and retirement talk.

Drake joined an episode of Nicki Minaj’s Queen Radio in August 2022 where he said he wasn’t ready to hang it up just yet.

“I’m not at that point where I even consider that being an option,” Drake explained to Nicki. “One of the best feelings I have in my life is completing a song or project. And by the way, those things are painful as well. A lot of nerves, a lot of confidence wavering.

“But I feel like I’m reaching a new level of fun. I’ve reached a new level of comfortability where I want to try things. Like this last album, I put out something I wanted to do to challenge myself.”

The rest of the interview with Lil Yachty arrives on Friday (February 24) in support of Lil Boat’s new sunglasses company, Future Mood.

Based on his recent output, it doesn’t appear as if Drake’s slowing down any time soon.

He unleashed a pair of projects in 2022 with the house-leaning Honestly, Nevermind and he joined forces with 21 Savage for Her Loss later into the year, both of which debuted atop the Billboard 200.

Drake Discusses ‘Graceful Exit’ in Lil Yachty Interview: 'I’m Not Going to Force Myself to Compete'

"I feel like I’m kind of introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit,” Drake tells Lil Yachty in an in-depth conversation touching on aging and more.

Drake says he’s been thinking of “a graceful exit.”

The consideration is discussed in an interview with Lil Yachty as part of the latter’s FUTUREMOOD company .

“Well, I think like on a broader scale, I think I’m at the point now where I just wanna, like—I feel like maybe we talked about this the other day—but I feel like I’m kind of introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit,” Drake tells Yachty when asked what’s left “to even search for or want” anymore, starting at the 5:50 mark above.

This doesn’t mean an all-out retirement, as he wound up determining, “I’ll still be around to like, you know, work with people or do a show here or there, but I’m not going to like, force myself to compete. … So I guess that’s the one thing that I want for myself really badly.”

Drake explained his “graceful exit” rationale like so:

Yachty pointed out that on the  Views track “Weston Road Flows” in 2016, Drake prophesied that he’d already have hung it up by this age. “The most successful rapper 35 and under/I’m assuming everybody’s 35 and under/That’s when I plan to retire, man it’s already funded,” he rapped.

Drizzy immediately admitted to Lil Boat with a scowl, “No, I hate hearing that shit. Yeah, I heard it the other night while we were at the club.”

Earlier this week, Complex shared an exclusive clip from Yachty’s Rap Radar interview in which he detailed how his and Drake’s creative relationship has evolved over time. Specifically, Yachty spoke about his involvement in Drake and 21 Savage ’s Her Loss , an album for which he received a number of co-writing credits.

“I don’t know, man, it just happened,” Yachty told Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller of how he ended up in the room during Her Loss sessions.

For Drake, Her Loss marked his second new album of 2022 and stands as a full-length extension of what he and 21 teased on predecessor Honestly, Nevermind with the closing track “Jimmy Cooks.” In fact, Her Loss ’ then-imminent arrival was first announced to the world by way of the official “Jimmy Cooks” video .

Drake's 'passive aggressive' reaction to being called old has TikTok in hysterics

A Drake interview has left TikTok in hysterics after a comment about his age left him too stunned to speak.

In a candid conversation with rapper Lil Yachty, the OVO hitmaker said he'd "just left 35", to which Yachty said: "You're getting up there."

The remark hilariously caught the 36-year-old off-guard, who responded "well... alright" before taking a brief moment to gather his thoughts.

"How old are you?" Drake quipped back while taking a sip of his drink.

The pair shared a back-and-forth about the age difference, with Drake saying "You have confidence at 25 because you're 25 . It's so cool now.

"It's cool to you that you're 25, I get it. I was there. I was 25 too ."

The snippet from Yachty's Moody Conversation series was soon shared to TikTok , with thousands of comments about the light-hearted "passive-aggressive" tone.

"That pause? Feelings were hurt," one said, while another added: "[Drake's] crying on the inside."

"He looked at the cameras like.. y’all gon delete this right," a third humoured.

Meanwhile, one TikToker highlighted: "'I just left 35' is a crazy way to say 36."

The Toronto rapper also took a moment to share a bizarre analogy, in which he claimed to relate to women with "huge t**s".

Drake recalled a conversation with his therapist, who apparently said: "You know, no matter what kind of woman you’re chasing physically, you have the biggest t**s in the room. Nobody can think about anything else other than just your gigantic t**s."

@alldefmusic #Drake’s therapist says he will always have the biggest t*ts in the room 😭 Y’all think this is accurate advice? 🤔 #drizzy #lilyachty

He said: "All the preconceived notions, they can’t see past the gigantic t**s unless they talk to you and then they’re like, ‘Oh wow, your t**s are huge but you’re super smart. You’re really nice and kind.’

"So it’s interesting. That’s why I relate to girls with huge t**s."

Drake and Lil Yachty

On “Too Much” featuring Sampha, Drake rapped “Moment I stop havin’ fun with it, I’ll be done with it,” and a recent interview with Lil Yachty teases the time may have come. The 36-year-old rapper hinted at retiring from music during a snippet shared on social media.

Conducted to promote Lil Boat’s new sunglasses company, Future Mood, the “Poland” rapper promised to share the full conversation on Friday (Feb. 24).

This is not the first time the chart-topping rapper has discussed retirement with his peers, however, his tune has changed. According to HipHopDX , during an episode of Queen Radio with Nicki Minaj in August 2022, the “light skin Keith Sweat” discussed his intention to never put down the mic.

“I’m not at that point where I even consider that being an option,” explained the highest-selling singles artist in RIAA history. “One of the best feelings I have in my life is completing a song or project. And by the way, those things are painful as well. A lot of nerves, a lot of confidence wavering. “

He continued, “But I feel like I’m reaching a new level of fun. I’ve reached a new level of comfortability where I want to try things. Like this last album, I put out something I wanted to do to challenge myself.”

Drake hinted at retirement back on “Weston Road Flows” from his 2016 album Views . “It’s rainin’ money, Oklahoma City Thunder/The most successful rapper, 35 and under/ I’m assumin’ everybody’s 35 and under/That’s when I plan to retire, man, it’s already funded,” a then 29-year-old Drizzy rapped.

Even just last year, Drake spoke to Nicki on her podcast about retirement and was singing a completely different tune.

“I’m not at that point where I even consider that being an option,” Drake explained to Nicki back in August 2022. “One of the best feelings I have in my life is completing a song or project. And by the way, those things are painful as well. A lot of nerves, a lot of confidence wavering.”

“But I feel like I’m reaching a new level of fun. I’ve reached a new level of comfortability where I want to try things. Like this last album, I put out something I wanted to do to challenge myself.”

Last year alone, Drake dropped two No. 1 albums Honestly, Nevermind , and the 21 Savage collab project Her Loss . He says that the latter project is a classic. “[ Her Loss ] is one of the greatest albums I ever made in my life,” he declared . “I said the other day, I think this is a clear entry into my top five of my catalog — if not, top three.”

With the recent success of his last two albums, Drake is showing no signs of slowing down. Drake and Lil Yachty’s full conversation is to be released sometime Friday (Feb. 24).
